Abstract:The transfer of nuclear spent fuel from the reactor storage pool to dry storage or for reprocessing or final disposition requires information about its isotopic composition, decay heat, and other thermomechanical properties. The spent nuclear fuel assembly of a typical advanced pressurized water reactor, AP-1000, was characterized using the Monte Carlo MCNPX code and SCALE/ORIGEN code. The simulation of operational history started from the operation of the first fresh core for an average fuel assembly with certain physical isotopic parameters until 25 GWd/tonne U discharge burnup. The analysis considered the calculations of the radionuclide inventories, activity, neutron emission spectrum, gamma-ray emission spectrum, and decay power after 700 effective full power days and for post different time ranges until a 1 million–year cooling period. The comparison of some results of the two codes showed small differences due to the consideration of the continuous-energy variation for neutrons in the MCNPX code and the discrete energy assumption in the SCALE/ORIGEN code.

Abstract:Exploitation of nuclear power plants as well as construction of new generation reactors lead to great accumulation of spent fuel in interim storage facilities at nuclear power plants, and in spent fuel «wet» and «dry» long-term storages. Consequently, handling the fuel needs more attention. The paper is focused on the creation of an efficient computational model used for developing the procedures and regulations of spent nuclear fuel handling in nuclear fuel cycle of the new generation reactor. A Thorium High-temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Unit (HGTRU, Russia) was used as an object for numerical research. Fuel isotopic composition of HGTRU was calculated using the verified code of the MCU-5 program. The analysis of alpha emitters and neutron radiation sources was made. The neutron yield resulting from (α,n)-reactions and at spontaneous fission was calculated. In this work it has been shown that contribution of (α,n)-neutrons is insignificant in case of such (Th,Pu)-fuel composition and HGTRU operation mode, and integral neutron yield can be approximated by the Watt spectral function. Spectral and standardized neutron distributions were achieved by approximation of the list of high-precision nuclear data. The distribution functions were prepared in group and continuous form for further use in calculations according to MNCP, MCU, and SCALE.

Abstract:Small modular reactors represent a promising technology for power generation, offering solutions to the energy crisis and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. As Ukraine considers the deployment of NuScale, UK SMR, and SMR-160, it is crucial to address the safe management of spent nuclear fuel. This study focuses on evaluating the radiological characteristics of spent nuclear fuel from the selected small modular reactors and for comparison, from the VVER-1000 reactor. Using the Monte Carlo code Serpent, depletion calculations were performed for an assembly in an infinite 2-D geometry, and the activity, decay heat, and inhalation toxicity of the spent nuclear fuel were assessed. We determined the main nuclides contributing to the radiological characteristics and quantified the mass content of these nuclides. The total number of spent nuclear fuel assemblies produced during the entire life of each small modular reactor type was estimated. The radiological characteristics assessed for the three small modular reactors do not exceed those observed for VVER-1000 reactors currently operating in Ukraine. So, spent nuclear fuel generated by the selected small modular reactors will introduce no new challenges to Ukraine's radioactive waste management system. The results of this work provide valuable insights for identifying the optimal small modular reactor technologies for Ukraine concerning safe spent nuclear fuel management.

Abstract:Abstract The paper formulates the main problems associated with research on transmutation, which should be paid attention to by today’s young researchers. The processes of production of hazardous nuclides during transmutation in reactor facilities are considered. The goals of transmutation and the choice of nuclides to be transmuted are discussed. The concept of radiotoxicity is explained as a measure of the radiological hazard of radioactive nuclides, based on the maximum permissible concentration of nuclides according to the IAEA standards. The problem of the formation of secondary radioactive nuclides in nuclear fuel during generation of neutrons for transmutation is discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods of transmutation in nuclear installations are considered: inclusion of transmutable nuclides in nuclear fuel in fast reactors, transmutation in specialized thermal and fast transmutation reactor installations and ADS systems. The problem of accumulation of highly radioactive actinides in a transmutation facility during long-term transmutation and the problem of a potential hazard of the transmutation facility itself are discussed. The unacceptability of application of common-type power reactors for the transmutation of long-lived fission products is demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents research work focused on assessments for meeting the challenge of monitoring actinide content in spent nuclear fuel (SNF) via characteristic neutron emissions [from spontaneous fission and (α,n) reactions] with CTMFDs. A challenge problem was posed to examine if a CTMFD could operate reliably over 1 hour for conducting neutron spectroscopy at a 1 m standoff from a 30-y cooled SNF, in a ~1012:1 (gamma:neutron) and a 150 Gy (15 kRad) accumulated dose. The impacts on operability were studied for the effects of gamma radiation on: (i) radiolysis in the CTMFD sensing fluid; (ii) 3 MeV gamma photoneutrons; and, (iii) CTMFD electronics. A Co-60 irradiator was used for dose effects on the CTMFD. A 14 MeV DT accelerator was used with a NaCl target to produce 3-4 MeV photons from activated 37S (via. neutron absorption in 37Cl) expected from SNF at 1-m standoff. Our examinations revealed the absence of any significant impact on CTMFD performance for meeting and exceeding the challenge problem metrics. We validated for no discernible impact of: 3-4 MeV gamma-produced photoneutrons when combined with a fission neutron source and radiolysis in the DFP sensing fluid through a 150 Gy absorbed dose. Past research results at Purdue University have validated survivability above the targeted 150 Gy level. This paper also provides extended evidence for survivability (from radiolysis) at higher gamma doses through 750 Gy with a borated DFP-sensing fluid formulation-based CTMFD.
Cross-disciplinary Reactor-to-Repository Framework for Evaluating Spent Nuclear Fuel from Advanced Reactors

Abstract:This study presents a cross-disciplinary reactor-to-repository framework to compare different advanced reactors with respect to their spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The framework consists of (1) OpenMC for simulating neutronics, fuel depletion, and radioactive decays; (2) NWPY for computing the repository footprint for SNF disposal given the thermal constraints; and (3) PFLOTRAN for simulating radionuclide transport in the geosphere to compute the peak dose rate, which is used to quantify the repository performance and environmental impact. We first perform the meta-analysis of past comparative analyses to identify the factors led previously to inconsistent conclusions. We then demonstrate the new framework by comparing five reactor types. Significant findings are that (1) the repository footprint is neither linearly related to SNF volume nor to decay heat, due to the repository's thermal constraint, (2) fast reactors have significantly higher I-129 inventory, which is often the primarily dose contributor from repositories, and (3) the repository performance primarily depends on the waste forms. The TRISO-based reactors, in particular, have significantly higher SNF volumes, but result in smaller repository footprints and lower peak dose rates. Our analysis highlights the diversity of these reactors, each of which should be evaluated individually. The open-source framework ensures proper cross-disciplinary connections between reactor simulations and environmental assessments, as well as the transparency/traceability required for such comparative analyses. It aims to support reactor designers, repository developers and policy makers in evaluating the impact of different reactor designs, with the ultimate goal of improving the sustainability of nuclear energy systems.

Nuclear data evaluation for decay heat analysis of spent nuclear fuel over 1–100 k year timescale

Abstract:Accurate nuclear data are essential in the evaluation of decay heat from spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The accuracy of such data was assessed using an approach that compares values reported in different evaluated libraries and determines whether discrepancies reflect inaccuracies in primary data. A short list of 43 isotopes which are most significant to SNF decay heat calculations over 1–100 k years was produced by combining generic reactor inventory code with decay heat analysis for undifferentiated SNF. Decay properties (half-lives and decay energies) and neutron interactions (cross section and fission yields) were compared from 6 evaluated libraries. Fission product (FP) discrepancies identified are 90Sr half-life, where inclusion of a single measurement significantly reduces the evaluated value; 95mNb beta energy, where DDEP evaluation omits the decay to the 95Mo ground state; 99Tc beta energy, where evaluations differ by approximately 10% with a variety of shape factors used; 126Sb/126mSb beta (JEF2.2/3.1.1/3.3) and electron energies (JEFF3.1.1), where intensity differences are reported; and 137Cs beta energy, where ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEF3.3 evaluations use incorrect shape factors. For actinides, the major discrepancies identified were 237Np alpha energy (JEF2.2/3.1.1) and 225Ac electron energies (ENDF/B-VIII.0) but overall show less discrepancies during long-term disposal (0.1–100 ky) compared to FP's during interim storage (1–100 years). Further assessments of the 90Sr half-life and the best shape factor for the 99Tc beta decay are needed to improve future decay heat analyses, which are important for designing future stores and evaluating schemes for possible heat recovery.

Toxicity of irradiated advanced heavy water reactor fuels

Abstract:The good neutron economy and online refueling capability of the CANDU® heavy water moderated reactor (HWR) enable it to use many different fuels such as low enriched uranium (LEU), plutonium, or thorium, in addition to its traditional natural uranium (NU) fuel. The toxicity and radiological protection methods for these proposed fuels, unlike those for NU, are not well established. This study uses software to compare the fuel composition and toxicity of irradiated NU fuel against those of two irradiated advanced HWR fuel bundles as a function of post-irradiation time. The first bundle investigated is a CANFLEX® low void reactor fuel (LVRF), of which only the dysprosium-poisoned central element, and not the outer 42 LEU elements, is specifically analyzed. The second bundle investigated is a heterogeneous high-burnup (LEU,Th)O(2) fuelled bundle, whose two components (LEU in the outer 35 elements and thorium in the central eight elements) are analyzed separately. The LVRF central element was estimated to have a much lower toxicity than that of NU at all times after shutdown. Both the high burnup LEU and the thorium fuel had similar toxicity to NU at shutdown, but due to the creation of such inhalation hazards as (238)Pu, (240)Pu, (242)Am, (242)Cm, and (244)Cm (in high burnup LEU), and (232)U and (228)Th (in irradiated thorium), the toxicity of these fuels was almost double that of irradiated NU after 2,700 d of cooling. New urine bioassay methods for higher actinoids and the analysis of thorium in fecal samples are recommended to assess the internal dose from these two fuels.

Abstract:Abstract To make the nuclear fuel cycle more economical and convenient, as well as prevent nuclear proliferation, the conceptual study of a simple high-temperature dry reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) for a ceramic fast reactor is proposed in this paper. This simple high-temperature dry (HT-dry) reprocessing includes the Atomics International Reduction Oxidation (AIROX) process and purification method for rare-earth elements. After removing the part of fission products from SNF by a HT-dry reprocessing without fine separation, the remaining nuclides and some uranium are fabricated into fresh fuel which can be used back to the ceramic fast reactor. Based on the ceramic coolant fast reactor, we studied neutron physics of nuclear fuel cycle which consists operation of ceramic reactor, removing part of fission products from SNF and preparation of fresh fuels for many time. The parameters of the study include effective multiplication factor (Keff), beam density, and nuclide mass for different ways to remove the fission products from SNF. With the increase in burnup time, the trend of increasing 239Pu gradually slows down, and the trend of 235U gradually decreases and become balanced. For multiple removal of part of fission products in the nuclear fuel cycle, the higher the removal, the larger the initial Keff.
Research on the Induced Radioactivity of HTR-PM’s Reactor Pressure Vessel: A Comparative Study Between FLUKA, KORIGEN and QAD-CGA

Abstract:The reactor pressure vessel (RPV), which is made of steel containing impurities, will be irradiated by a strong neutron field during the long-term operation of the reactor. Induced radioactivity due to neutron irradiation, which may affect the health of staffs during the maintenance and decommissioning, was studied in the case of the High Temperature Reactor - Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM). The activation products and their corresponding specific activities were calculated by KORIGEN, which is based on deterministic method, and by the Monte Carlo code FLUKA. A comparison of these two programs shows good agreement, and the differences of specific activities are within one order of magnitude for 60% of the nuclides. Furthermore, the remanent dose rates at shutdown time and after 30 days, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years of cooling times were calculated by FLUKA and QAD-CGA, which is based on point-kernel integration technology. The comparison of dose results also shows good agreement. Meanwhile Monte Carlo method can give more accurate results. In the end, the ambient dose equivalent rates at typical points and times caused by the whole RPV were calculated by integration method. A preliminary radiation protection strategy was also concluded from these calculation results for HTR-PM's RPV decommissioning. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The management of long-lived radionuclides in spent fuel is a key issue to achieve the closed nuclear fuel cycle and the sustainable development of nuclear energy. The partitioning-transmutation method is supposed to efficiently treat the long-lived radionuclides. Accordingly, the transmutation of long-lived minor actinides (MAs) is significant for the postprocessing of spent fuel. In the present work, the transmutations in pressurized water reactor (PWR) mixed oxide (MOX) fuel are investigated through the Monte Carlo neutron transport method. Two types of MAs are homogeneously incorporated into MOX fuel assembly with different mixing ratios. In addition, two types of design of semihomogeneous loading of 237Np in MOX fuels are studied. The results indicate an overall nice efficiency of transmutation in PWR with MOX fuel, especially for 237Np and 241Am, which are primarily generated in the current uranium oxide fuel. In addition, the transmutation efficiency of 237Np is excellent, while its inclusion has no much influence on other MAs. The flattening of power and burnup are achieved by semihomogeneous loading of MAs. The uncertainties of Monte Carlo method are negligible, while those due to nuclear data change little the conclusions of the transmutation of MAs. The transmutation of MAs in MOX fuel is expected to be an efficient method for spent fuel management.
Neutron Activation of Structural Materials of a Dry Storage System for Spent Nuclear Fuel and Implications for Radioactive Waste Management

Abstract:In order to estimate the radiological characteristics of disused dry storage systems for spent nuclear fuel, a stepwise framework to calculate neutron sources (ORIGEN-ARP), incident neutron flux and reaction rate (MCNPX), effective cross-section (hand calculation), and residual activity (ORIGEN-2) was established. Applicability of the framework was demonstrated by comparing the residual activity of a commercialized storage system, HI-STORM 100, listed in the safety analysis report and calculated in this study. For a reference case assuming an impurity-free storage system, the modified effective cross-sections were theoretically interpreted and the need for managing disused components as a radioactive waste for at least four years was demonstrated. Sensitivity analyses showed that the higher burnup induces the higher residual radioactivity, and the impurity 59Co may extend the minimum decay-in-storage period up to 51 years within the reported range of 59Co content in stainless steel. The extended long-term storage over 100 years, however, caused no significant increase in residual radioactivity. Impurity control together with appropriate decay-in-storage was proposed as an effective approach to minimize the secondary radioactive waste arising from disused dry storage systems. The results of this study could be used to optimize the decommissioning and waste management plan regarding interim storage of spent fuel.

Abstract:The difference spectra of binary and ternary complexes of horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase with oxidized and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides, nicotinamide 1,N6-ethenoadenine dinucleotide, and adenosine diphosphate ribose along with a number of substrate analogues have been measured. These spectra bear a very close resemblance to those obtained by perturbation of the coenzyme(s) and their analogues by acid, NaCl, dioxane, or tert-butyl alcohol. It is inferred that the coenzymes experience a combination of ionic and nonpolar environments at the adenine binding site of the enzyme. This is borne out by published X-ray crystallographic results. The phosphorescence spectra do not indicate the presence of ionized tyrosine in ternary complexes invovling enzyme, coenzyme, and substrate analogues. The ultraviolet spectra can be explained as arising from the perturbation of the coenzyme chromophores upon binding to the enzyme without having to invoke tyrosine ionization.
Radiobiological Impact Evaluation Within Monte-Carlo Shielding Calculations of CANDU Spent Fuel

Abstract:The radiobiological effect on the human health of CANDU spent fuel is assessed using Monte Carlo shielding estimates. The examination of spent fuel occurs after it has been discharged from the reactor. A specific cooling interval is considered, with the radiation dose rates that characterize the used fuel being of interest. Two kinds of fuel were studied in a CANDU standard fuel bundle with 37 fuel components: natural uranium (NU) fuel and slightly enriched uranium (SEU) fuel. The fuel burnup was simulated using the ORIGEN-S algorithm, and the photon sources describing the wasted fuel were retrieved. A generic stainless steel shipping cask type B was used for spent fuel transfer, and radiation doses at the cask wall and in the air up to 8 m away from the shipping cask were computed using the Monte Carlo MORSE-SGC algorithm. To ensure nuclear safety and radiation protection, spent fuel must be maintained in temporary wet cooling storage for six months. The projected dosage rates were modest, allowing for the safe handling of the used fuel shipping cask. The corresponding dosages on human body organs for the two considered spent fuels were estimated without and with shielding. Due to the varied sensitivity and reaction of organs/tissue, the effective dosage was evaluated for the human body by applying a tissue-weighting factor; these weighting factors are not equal, and functional coefficients specified by ICRP are used. The equivalent doses calculation modeling findings for the present study underlined the complete effectiveness of the applied shielding and attained the acceptable dose level.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Background</h3>The accelerator-driven subcritical transmutation system (ADS) is an advanced technology for the harmless disposal of nuclear waste. A theoretical analysis of the ingredients and content of nuclear waste, particularly long-lived waste in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), will provide important information for future spent fuel disposal.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Purpose</h3>The present study is an attempt to investigate the yields of isotopes in the neutron-induced fission process and estimate the content of long-lived ingredients of nuclear waste in a PWR.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Method</h3>We combined an approximation of the mass distribution of five Gaussians with the most probable charge model (\(Z_\text {p}\) model) to obtain the isotope yields in the \(^{235}\)U(n,f) and \(^{239}\)Pu(n,f) processes. The potential energy surface based on the concept of a di-nuclear system model was applied to an approximation using five Gaussian functions. A mathematical formula for the neutron spectrum in a PWR was established, and sets of differential equations were solved to calculate the content of long-lived nuclides in a PWR.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Results</h3>The calculated isotopic fission yields were in good agreement with the experimental data. Except for \(^{238}\)U, the contents of \(^{239}\)Pu, \(^{240}\)Pu, \(^{241}\)Pu, \(^{242}\)Pu, \(^{237}\)Np, \(^{235}\)U, and \(^{236}\)U are predominant in the PWR after reaching a discharge burnup. In addition, some isotope pairs of heavy nuclei reach a similar value after stabilization, which can be explained by the decay chain and effective fission cross-sections. For fission fragments, we simulated the content evolution of some long-lived nuclides \(^{90}\)Sr, \(^{107}\)Pd,\(^{135}\)Cs, and their isobars \(^{90}\)Rb, \(^{107}\)Rh, and \(^{135}\)Xe during a fuel cycle in a PWR. The variations in the inventories of uranium and plutonium were in good agreement with the data in Daya Bay.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Conclusion</h3>A new method is proposed for the prediction of the isotopic fission yield. The inventory of long-lived nuclides was analyzed and predicted after reaching a discharge burnup.

Abstract:The increasing demand for nuclear reactors as a source of clean energy forced nuclear researchers to search for ways to enhance the safety operation of nuclear reactors. This paper discusses the viability of using different thorium compounds (( 233 U, Th)O 2 , ( 235 U, Th)O 2 , (RGPu, Th)O 2 ) as an accident tolerant fuel/advanced technology fuel (ATF) for Pebble Bed Modular Reactor 400 (PBMR-400). A comprehensive analysis of thorium-based fuel performance was carried out and compared with UO 2 to develop a novel nuclear fuel with the capability to tolerate severe accident conditions. The neutronic characteristics such as the infinity multiplication factor, initial heavy metal concentration, RGPu concentration and fission products concentration were analyzed. In addition to, the main safety parameters have been calculated to distinguish the effect of the proposed fuels on them. The thermal spectrum and thermal output power have been visualized to give a good insight view inside the core about the distribution of the heat. In general, the neutronic analysis demonstrated good behavior of the examined thorium-based fuel in the PBMR-400 and especially in the case of (RGPu, Th)O 2 . PBMR-400 showed excellent performance in incinerating a large amount of reactor-grade plutonium when it was used in a kernel fuel bed.

Abstract:Neutronics calculations have been performed of the MYRRHA ADS Reactor with a thorium-based fuel mixture, using the simulation programs MCNPX (Waters, 2002) and Geant4 (Agostinelli, 2003). Thorium is often considered for ADS systems, and this is the first evaluation of the possibilities for thorium based fuels using a reactor design which has been developed in detail. It also extends the application of the widely-used Geant4 program to the geometry of MYRRHA and to thorium. An asymptotic 232Th/233U mixture is considered, together with the standard MOX fuel and a possible 232Th/MOX starter. Neutron fluxes and spectra are calculated at several regions in the core: fuel cells, IPS cells and the two (Mo and Ac) isotope production cells. These are then used for simple calculations of the fuel evolution and of the potential for the incineration of minor actinide waste. Results from the two programs agree and support each other and show that the thorium fuel is viable, and has good evolution/breeding properties, and that minor actinide incineration, though it will not take place on a significant scale, will be demonstrable.

Abstract:To reduce the potential and volume of radiotoxicity of radioactive wastes, minor actinides (MAs) elements recovered from discharged fuel are to be recycled. In this context, the main aim of this work is to examine the possibility of using thorium-based fuel for burning extra MAs in the fourth generation European Sodium cooled Fast Reactor (ESFR). For that MCNPX transport code was used to design a representative fuel assembly of this concept. The reference uranium-based fuel was uniformly replaced by thorium mixed with different fractions of MAs and burned for 2050 effective full power days. The influence of MAs on the evolution of reactivity and fuel transmutation is being investigated to ensure the performance of the fuel. Also, different neutronic and safety parameters such as neutron yield, neutron spectrum, neutron flux, effective delayed neutron fraction, Doppler constant, sodium void reactivity coefficient, were computed and their change with MAs content was investigated. Results indicate that recycling of MAs in ESFR using thorium-based fuel has a positive effect on reactivity and transmutation evolution but on other hand has a negative effect on safety parameters.

Abstract:Effectively implementing safeguards in fuel reprocessing and fuel fabrication plants requires the extensive use of state-of-the-art instrumentation for accurate material characterization. The ability to rapidly and continuously determine the material balance in a large facility is essential to control and reduce the risk of diversion. Multiple detection technologies are implemented that provide the necessary Continuity of Knowledge (CoK) and inventory control required for effective safeguards. In a Pu/U-oxide (MOX) fuel processing facility, much of the detection technology is based on moderated 3He neutron detectors. Recent concerns with respect to the possible lack of sufficient quantities of 3He has resulted in the interest in developing alternative detection technologies for current and future needs and applications. To address this situation, we have begun a series of experiments at a MOX fuel fabrication facility to determine the performance and suitability of liquid scintillator neutron detectors. MOX fuel in the form of reactor fuel assembly fuel rods and large volume MOX powder containers typically found in such production facilities were measured. In addition, high-purity Germanium (HPGe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors will be included to determine their respective performance characteristics in a large and complex fuel production environment. The results of these experiments will be used for consideration in the development and deployment of new safeguards systems in large, complex facilities such as the Japan Mixed-Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (J-MOX) or the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant (RRP). This paper will present and discuss the results of the first series of experiments, conducted at PPFF (Plutonium Fuel Development Center Plutonium Fuel Facility) of JAEA, as well as describe the next steps in this process.
