Abstract:Multisubstituted allylic boronates are attractive and valuable precursors for the rapid and stereoselective construction of densely substituted carbon skeletons. Herein, we report the first synthetic approach for differentially 2,3,3-trialkyl-substituted allylic boronates that contain a stereodefined tetrasubstituted alkene structure. Copper(I)-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective three-component coupling reactions between gem-dialkylallenes, alkyl halides, and a diboron reagent afforded sterically congested allylic boronates. The allylboration of aldehydes diastereoselectively furnished the corresponding homoallylic alcohols that bear a quaternary carbon. A computational study revealed that the selectivity-determining mechanism was correlated to the coordination of a boryl copper(I) species to the allene substrate as well as the borylcupration step.

Abstract:Chiral tertiary alcohols are an important structural motif, however, the general and efficient methodologies for their synthesis are less reported. Herein, we report a Ni(ІІ)-catalyzed asymmetric alkenylation and arylation of aryl ketones with organoborons under air via a 1,5-metalate shift strategy to obtain chiral tertiary allylic alcohols and diaryl alcohols. The reaction demonstrates good functional group tolerance and delivers chiral tertiary alcohols with good to excellent results. Furthermore, this method can be applied to the late-stage modification of drugs and the efficient synthesis of natural products. Notably, the reaction proceeds through an outer-sphere mechanism. The Ni(II) complex functions both as a Lewis acid to activate the ketone and create a chiral environment, and as coordination bridge linking the ketone and the organoboron-derived "ate" complex, facilitating the 1,5-metalate shift without forming a C-Ni bond. This approach contrasts with traditional transition metal-catalyzed nucleophilic addition reactions that involve carbon-metal bond formation.

Abstract:Chiral propargylic boron compounds have a diverse array of potential applications. Although numbers of highly enantioselective methodologies for the synthesis of other organoboron compounds are well established, highly enantioselective synthesis of chiral propargylic boron compounds remains unknown. Herein, we report a catalytic method for the construction of chiral propargylic boron compounds by means of highly enantioselective dirhodium-catalyzed B–H bond insertion reactions using aryl propargylic sulfonylhydrazones as carbene precursors. This method enables the straightforward synthesis of a wide range of stable chiral propargylic boron compounds in yields up to 99% with enantioselectivities up to 97% ee. The operationally simple method features a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and mild reaction conditions. The boron compounds prepared in this study are inaccessible by other known methods and exhibit high potential utility because they could be efficiently transformed into allenyl borates, triazole borane compounds, and homopropargylic and propargylic alcohols with good enantiomeric fidelity. Our work expands the library of catalytic B–H bond insertion reactions, increases the variety of chiral organoboron compounds that can be synthesized, and provides preliminary information about possible transformations of chiral propargylic boron compounds, thus laying the foundation for wide application of these compounds.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed hydroboration of vinylcydo-propane with HBpin is first reported for the preparation of valuable homoallylic organoboronic esters. The iron catalysts enable efficient and regioselective C-C cleavage of vinylcyclo-propanes, stereoselectively delivering E-alkenes with good stereospecific selectivity at an allylic position. This protocol exhibits mild conditions with good functional group tolerability. The chiral homoallylic organoboronic esters could be further converted into chiral polysubstituted tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran.

Abstract:An efficient method for the synthesis of homopropargylboronates by copper-catalyzed alkynylboration of alkenes with diboron reagents and bromoalkynes has been developed. The alkynylboration reaction features high selectivity and efficiency, mild reaction conditions, wide substrate scope, and functional-group compatibility, and is a highly attractive complement to existing methods for the synthesis of homopropargylboronates. Both the boryl and alkynyl groups are good potential functional groups for the subsequent manipulations that provide access to a variety of important molecule structures.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the remote functionalization of alkenes for it offers a strategy to activate the challenging C-H bonds distant from the initiation point via alkene isomerization/functionalization. However, the catalytic enantioselective isomerization/functionalization with one single transition metal catalyst remains rare. Here we report a highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed remote C-H bond borylation of internal alkenes via sequential alkene isomerization/hydroboration. A chiral ligand featured twisted pincer, anionic, and non-rigid characters is designed and used for this transformation. This methodology, which is operationally simple using low catalyst loading without additional activator, shows excellent enantioselectivity and can be used to convert various internal alkenes with regio- and stereoisomers to valuable chiral secondary organoboronates with good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:Discovered in the 19th century, ethyl acetoacetate has been central to the development of organic chemistry, including its pedagogy and applications. In this study, we present borylated derivatives of this venerable molecule. A boron handle has been installed at either [[EQUATION]]- or [[EQUATION]]-position of acetoacetate by homologation of acyl-MIDA (N-methyliminodiacetic acid) boronates with diazoacetates. Either alkyl or boryl groups were found to migrate with regiochemistry being a function of the steric bulk of the diazo species. Boryl [[EQUATION]]-ketoesters can be further modified into borylated pyrazolones and oximes, thereby expanding the synthetic toolkit and offering opportunities for additional modifications.

Abstract:Herein the palladium-catalyzed cyclizative borylation of allenyl ketones with diboron compounds is reported which involves the carbene boryl migratory insertion as the key step. This reaction features mild conditions, good functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope. Thus, it represents an efficient methodology for the assembly of diverse tri-substituted furyl boronates. In addition, a series of transformations of the resultant multi-substituted furyl boronates were conducted to provide various densely substituted furan derivatives in good yields, further illustrating the potential synthetic utility of this methodology.

Abstract:The diastereo- and enantioselective allylation of ketones remains a synthetic challenge, with transition metal catalysis offering the most applied methods. Here, a boron-catalyzed allylation of ketones with allenes is presented. Excellent yield, regioselectivity, and diastereoselectivity were found across functionalized substrates. The reaction was further developed to accommodate an enantioenriched boron catalyst and thus gave asymmetric ketone allylation in good yield, diastereoselectivity, and enantioselectivity. Mechanistic studies supported a hydroboration-allylation-transborylation pathway.

Abstract:Alkyl organoborons are powerful materials for the construction of C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds, predominantly via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. These species are generally assembled using 2-electron processes that harness the ability of boron reagents to act as both electrophiles and nucleophiles. Herein, we demonstrate an alternative borylation strategy based on the reactivity of amine-ligated boryl radicals. This process features the use of a carboxylic acid containing amine-ligated borane that acts as boryl radical precursor for photoredox oxidation and decarboxylation. The resulting amine-ligated boryl radical undergoes facile addition to styrenes and imines through radical-polar crossover manifolds. This delivers a new class of sp3-organoborons that are stable solids and do not undergo protodeboronation. These novel materials include unprotected α-amino derivatives that are generally unstable. Crucially, these aliphatic organoboron species can be directly engaged in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings with structurally complex aryl halides. Preliminary studies suggest that they enable slow-release of the corresponding and often difficult to handle alkyl boronic acids.

Abstract:Herein, catalytic difunctionalization of vinyl arenes is reported using iron salt as a catalyst without ligands. A series of substituted alkylboronic acid esters was obtained as a single regioisomer from vinyl arenes at 50 °C. This multicomponent protocol enabled the formation of C–C and C–B bonds to produce boroalkylated products in a single process. A non‐radical pathway is proposed for the reaction in contrast to the radical pathways of iron‐catalyzed hydroalkylation reactions. The organoboron compounds generated from this reaction were further utilized for diverse functional group conversions.

Abstract:A metal-free borylation process based on Sandmeyer-type transformation using arylamines derivatives as the substrates has been developed. Through optimization of the reaction conditions, this novel conversion can be successfully applied to a wide range of aromatic amines, affording borylation products in moderate to good yields. Various functionalized arylboronates, which are difficult to access by other methods, can be easily obtained with this metal-free transformation. Moreover, this transformation can be followed by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling without purification of the borylation products, which enhances the practical usefulness of this method. A possible reaction mechanism involving radical species has been proposed.

Abstract:The palladium-catalyzed oxidative borylation reaction of <i>N</i>-tosylhydrazones has been developed. The reaction features mild conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional group tolerance. It thus represents a highly efficient and practical method for the synthesis of di-, tri-, and tetrasubstituted alkenylboronates from readily available <i>N</i>-tosylhydrazones. One-pot Suzuki coupling and other transformations highlight the synthetic utility of the approach. DFT calculations have revealed that palladium-carbene formation and subsequent boryl migratory insertion are the key steps in the catalytic cycle. Abstract:The Cu-catalyzed 1,4-protosilylation and protoborylation of trifluoromethyl-substituted conjugated enynes were developed to access functionalized homoallenylsilanes and homoallenylboronates. This protocol also provides a general method to synthesize optically active homoallenylsilanes and homoallenylboronates in moderate to excellent yields with high enantiomeric excess by using new designed chiral bisoxazoline ligands. Simultaneously, the transformations of homoallenylsilanes and homoallenylboronates were also explored to synthesize useful building blocks.

Abstract:A study was undertaken to examine the information literacy of teachers and pupils in two UK single-sex selective state grammar schools, one providing education for girls and the other for boys. Qualitative research techniques were chosen to enable attitudes and ethnographic data to be captured. The research methods used included: observation of 10 teachers and 40 pupils in the classroom, complemented by observation of pupils’ behaviour in the school library and computing facilities; individual interviews with members of the teaching staff in both schools; and group interviews with pupils from different year groups. The majority of the teachers were found to be information literate, although this was more the result of personal interest in information and the role it can play in their teaching than because of any attempts made by the schools or their training to encourage information literacy. Pupils were found to be adept at using a variety of sources to locate information, but the cognitive skills required to achieve this tended to be underdeveloped and received little attention within the schools studied. The most significant finding was that, although the teachers interviewed were information literate, their skills with and attitudes towards information were not being transferred to their pupils.

Abstract:Herein, we disclose a highly efficient and facile electrochemical borylation of Morita−Baylis−Hillman adducts without using any metal catalyst. This methodology demonstrates excellent regio- and stereo-selectivity, leading to a wide range of functionalized E-allylic boronates, including derivatives of ibuprofen and menthol. Under mild and straightforward conditions, this redox-neutral reaction, combined with the scalability and synthetic applications of the allylic boronate esters, underscores its potential for a wide range of applications in organic synthesis.
