Abstract:Nerve growth factor (NGF) induces transcription-dependent neural differentiation of PC12 cells, and the ERK family of MAPKs has been implicated as the dominant signal pathway that mediates this response. We employed a neurofilament light chain (NFLC) promoter-luciferase (NFLC-Luc) reporter to define the role of the ERKs as well as additional MAPK pathways in NGF induction of this neural specific gene. Constitutive active forms of c-Raf-1, MEKK1 and MKK6, proximal regulators of the ERKs, JNKs, and p38 MAPKs, respectively, all stimulated NFLC-Luc activity. NFLC-Luc activity stimulated by NGF, however, was partially (∼50%) inhibited by the MEK inhibitor, PD098059, or by co-transfection of kinase-inactive MEK1 but not by the p38 MAPK inhibitor, SB203580, indicating a role for the ERKs, but not the p38 MAPKs, in NGF regulation of the NFLC promoter. Importantly, a gain-of-function MKK7-JNK3 fusion protein stimulated NFLC-Luc and synergized with gain-of-function c-Raf-1 to activate the NFLC promoter. In addition, transfection of kinase-inactive forms of MEK1 and MKK7 produced an additive inhibition of NGF-stimulated NFLC-Luc relative to either inhibitor alone. These findings indicate that the ERK and JNK pathways collaborate downstream of the NGF receptor for regulation of the NFLC promoter. Truncation analysis and electromobility shift assays established the requirement for a cAMP-response element/activating transcription factor-like site in the NFLC promoter that minimally interacts with constitutively expressed cAMP-response element-binding protein and JunD as well as c-Jun which is induced by NGF in an ERK-dependent manner. Cumulatively, these findings indicate that the ERK pathway requires collaboration with the JNK pathway for maximal activation of the NFLC gene in PC12 cells through the integrated control of c-Jun function.
Awareness of cardiovascular disease associated risk factors among Saudis in Riyadh City

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the awareness of Saudi population in Riyadh regarding cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and their risk factors.METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that used self-administered questionnaires conducted in universities, primary care centers, and electronic copies distributed in social media websites.RESULTS: Overall, 47.1% of the respondents had a good awareness of CVD and associated risk factors. However, awareness of the symptoms of stroke and heart attack was low. Pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis were the most commonly identified types of CVD, with 39.2% aware of these conditions. The most well-known symptom of heart attack was shortness of breath (known by 54.4% of the respondents). In relation to stroke, the most commonly recognized symptom was "sudden dizziness, trouble walking, or loss of balance" (45.4%). Respondents' awareness of CVD risk factors was moderate. The most common factors-identified by over two-thirds of participants-were unhealthy diet, smoking, dyslipidemia, and physical inactivity. Independent predictors of good CVD awareness were age 35-44 years, living in the north of Riyadh and following a healthy diet.CONCLUSIONS: The awareness of CVD and associated risk factors is insufficient among Saudis in Riyadh City. This study emphasizes the necessity for effective education to increase the awareness about CVD in Saudi Arabia. High awareness may lead to early recognition of the risk factors and lead to early implementation of primary prevention which the cornerstone of family medicine practice.

Abstract:Globally, hypertension is among the leading causes of premature mortality. It is a noncommunicable disease characterized by a persistent state of raised blood pressure that increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and medical conditions affecting the brain and kidneys. There is a paucity of thorough hypertension knowledge assessment among hypertensive patients in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Thus, this study aimed to assess overall and specific knowledge about hypertension and to identify predictors of inadequate knowledge. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia between February and April 2023. Data were collected using an online, self-administered questionnaire divided into two sections. In the first section, the characteristics of the participants were collected. In the second section, the Hypertension Knowledge-Level Scale was used to measure overall and specific knowledge areas (subdimensions). The overall and subdimensional means were tested using Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis H tests. Furthermore, the binary logistic regression was conducted to determine inadequate knowledge predictors. In all 253 hypertensive patients were eligible for participation; almost 70% of whom were male. The mean age of the participants was 45 years (±14.7), and their mean overall knowledge score was 17.60 (±5.09), which was equivalent to 67.7% of the maximum score. In addition, 40.7% of participants had an adequate level of hypertension knowledge. The complications subdimension level of knowledge was borderline optimal. At the same time, an adequate knowledge level was detected only in the lifestyle subdimension. Most patients showed inadequate levels of knowledge related to hypertension management. Diet, medical treatment, disease definition, drug compliance, and complications were subsequently the least knowledgeable subdimensions among the study population. Therefore, these subdimensions should be prioritized when planning hypertension educational interventions and during follow-up sessions, especially for patients of younger age groups and those with lower educational levels.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a condition in which the body responds improperly to harmful microorganisms and infections, which triggers a chain reaction throughout the body. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Infections that lead to sepsis, in most cases, start in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis rapidly leads to multi-organ failure and death. The risk factors for sepsis include a weakened immune system, being 65 years of age or older, and chronic medical conditions including diabetes, lung disease, and kidney disease. A thorough understanding of the warning signs and symptoms, as well as prompt medical attention, are required for successful sepsis management. Early detection, antimicrobial therapy, and intensive supportive care are the cornerstones of the best sepsis management.AIM: This study aimed to assess the public awareness and knowledge of sepsis in the Western region of Saudi Arabia.METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from the beginning of June till the end of August 2023, among 425 Saudi adults in the Western region above the age of 18 years. Data collection was carried out by administering a questionnaire through an online platform. The questionnaire included demographic information, risk factors, symptoms, protective factors, and the source of information about sepsis. The data collected were reviewed, coded, and then fed into IBM SPSS Statistics software for Windows, Version 21 (released 2012; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY).RESULTS: The study found that almost half (47.8%) of participants were aware of bacterial septicemia, with the most common sources of awareness being the internet (48.3%) and healthcare professionals (47.8%). Low immunity (75.9%) and infection (39.4%) have been the most frequently reported risk factors. Fever (31.5%) was the most commonly reported symptom. Participants from Yanbu and Jeddah and those in the healthcare sector had significantly higher awareness levels. The majority of participants (93.1%) had poor knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms of septicemia, with only 3.4% having fair or good knowledge. Sociodemographic characteristics did not significantly affect knowledge about septicemia (P>0.05).CONCLUSION: In summary, this study reveals that while awareness of bacterial septicemia is relatively high among the sample population, knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms of the condition is low. The internet, healthcare professionals, and social media play significant roles in raising awareness about bacterial septicemia. Participants from Yanbu and Jeddah, students, and healthcare sector workers had higher awareness levels compared to other groups. However, overall knowledge levels regarding bacterial septicemia were poor across various demographic characteristics. This highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to improve knowledge and understanding of septicemia and its risk factors and symptoms among the general population. Further research is needed to identify the reasons for low knowledge levels and develop effective strategies to improve awareness about bacterial septicemia.

Abstract:Introduction: For cardiac arrest victims, providing high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a fundamental component of initial care, especially in out-of-hospital settings. We sought to assess the knowledge of nonmedically trained individuals about CPR in case of cardiac arrest in the population of Jazan, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey containing 22 questions was administered to individuals aged ≥ 18 years who were not health-care providers. The sample comprised residents of Jazan, Saudi Arabia. The survey included knowledge about the signs of cardiac arrest, previous experiences with CPR, knowledge of basic life support (BLS), and concerns related to CPR. Results: This study examined responses from 480 people to assess their knowledge of CPR. More than one-half were female, and only 33% were male. Only 36.04% reported having received CPR training. In the event of a family member's cardiac arrest, more than 90% state that they would perform CPR. If a family member suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, more than 70% would call an ambulance immediately, whereas only 48% would call an ambulance if the same thing happened to a stranger. Fear of making a mistake was the most common reason for not performing CPR (70.63%). The media was the most common source of CPR training. Women were more aware of the warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest than men. Women were also more likely than men to perform CPR or call for assistance. Furthermore, women were significantly more likely than men to discontinue CPR on a sudden cardiac arrest patient for fear of stopping a working heart or being contaminated by blood or vomit. Few respondents were willing to undergo CPR training; students, homemakers, and retired people were more willing to be trained in CPR than others. Conclusion: In the Saudi Arabian province of Jazan, nonmedically trained people demonstrated a low level of CPR training and knowledge. We believe that making BLS courses available to the general public will increase CPR awareness and understanding among adults and increase survival rates in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
Public awareness of first-aid management of seizures in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: First aid measures in cases of epileptic seizures are crucial. Misconceptions about seizure first-aid measures are probably common. Most of the previous data focused on teachers and healthcare providers. The objective of this study was to assess the awareness of seizure first-aid measures and their associated factors in a community sample in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using an online questionnaire between July 2020 and February 2021. Those who had never heard of epilepsy and healthcare workers were excluded. Overall and individual scores were calculated for first-aid measures during and after the seizures as well as calling the ambulance. Results: A total of 1542 participants were included in the study. The overall awareness score of seizure first-aid measures was 57.3%. The awareness of the need to call the ambulance in special circumstances was the highest individual score (78.3%), followed by measures after the seizure (54.2%), and finally measures during the seizure (48.4%). For the latter, the awareness of injury prevention measures was the highest (74.9%), while the awareness of treatment options was the lowest (12.2%). Overall awareness score was significantly higher in older age (p = 0.015), female gender (p < 0.001), divorced status (p = 0.014), knowing someone with epilepsy (p < 0.001), attending a course or workshop about seizure first-aid (p < 0.001), watching a video on seizure first-aid on any platform (p < 0.001), and having basic life support training (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The awareness of seizure first-aid measures is still inadequate among the public in Saudi Arabia. The current finding underscores the importance of simulation videos on social media and/or field-training campaigns to improve the public awareness of seizure first-aid measures.

Abstract:Background Post-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage is a life-threatening condition, and early detection and response can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this study was to assess public awareness of the alarming signs of intracranial bleeding after trauma in adults in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methodology From August 2023 to April 2024, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a five-scale structured questionnaire: demographics, risk factors for road traffic accidents, alarm signs and symptoms, ability to recognize these signs, and participants who experienced head trauma. The study focused on people aged 18 and over living in Jeddah. Results A total of 584 participants were included, with 34.2% males and 65.8% females. Findings revealed that 57% recognized the critical need for medical help after head trauma. Furthermore, only 45% of the population were unaware that low levels of awareness or wakefulness indicate bleeding, reflecting a low awareness level in the adult population. Among children, only 34% recognized changes in eating and lactation habits, and 54% identified continuous crying and irritability. Furthermore, 66% of participants identified loss or change in consciousness as a symptom that required hospital admission, while 60% recognized chronic headaches as a critical sign. Conclusion This study revealed the critical need for public health campaigns to improve awareness and understanding of signs of intracranial post-traumatic bleeding. The results highlighted the importance of early medical interventions to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with this condition.

Abstract:Introduction Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the visual cortex that usually occurs due to abnormal visual development early in life. The clinical importance of amblyopia is that it is a significant cause of visual loss in the pediatric population. Knowing and understanding amblyopia plays a crucial role in management since the earlier the intervention, the better the results. Aim This study aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness of amblyopia among the general population in Saudi Arabia. Subject and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A self-administered Arabic questionnaire was distributed to the general population through social media using Google Forms. The questionnaire includes sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, marital status, etc.) and questions to assess the knowledge about amblyopia, including its definition, etiologies, and treatment. Results Of the 488 participants, 57.4% were females, and 38.3% were aged between 26 and 39 years old. Of the participants, 46.5% have heard of amblyopia. The overall mean knowledge score was 16.9 (SD 3.09) out of 32 points. In terms of knowledge, 64.5% had moderate knowledge, 1.8% had good knowledge, and 33.6% had poor knowledge levels. Factors associated with increased knowledge were being older, female gender, married, having children, having a family history of eye disease, and hearing of amblyopia. Conclusion Consistent with the literature, this study finds a need for more knowledge about amblyopia among the general population. Significant predictors of increased knowledge include younger age group, female gender, having children, family history of eye disease, and ever heard of amblyopia.

Abstract:Abstract Background Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a major public health problem and represents commonest form of dementia that affects many aspects of brain functions and contributes to 60–70% of dementia cases. No study has been conducted in Saudi Arabia to measure the prevalence of AD. However, approximately there are at least 50,000 patients in Saudi Arabia based on an expert’s estimation . Public knowledge and awareness about Alzheimer’s disease are crucial for early diagnosis and management. Objective To investigate the public’s knowledge and attitudes toward Alzheimer’s disease in Aseer region. Subject and methods Cross-sectional study has employed an electronic online, semi-structured, and self-administered questionnaire, randomly distributed among participants. The questions included sociodemographics, attitudes, and knowledge panels toward Alzheimer’s disease based on Alzheimer’s Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS). Results The study included 1374 participants with a mean age 33 ± 11 years (ages18–70). The majority of the participants (77%) had no family history with Alzheimer’s disease. Less than 50% of the questions were answered correctly and the mean knowledge score was 10.77 ± 5.11. The results revealed that young-aged participants, females, and those having a family history of the disease, have significantly ( P < 0.05) better AD-related knowledge. Conclusion The study revealed an inadequate AD-related knowledge as indicated by the low mean knowledge score. However, participants have demonstrated a positive attitude toward AD patients. More educational programs are required to enhance their awareness and knowledge about AD.

Abstract:Background Anaphylaxis is a severe hypersensitivity reaction caused by IgE-mediated mechanisms. This life-threatening condition affects multiple body systems. Global lifetime prevalence estimates for anaphylaxis range from 0.3% to 5.1%, with increasing incidence noted, particularly among young individuals. Symptoms range from mild skin manifestations like urticaria and pruritus to severe respiratory distress and hypotension. Objectives This study aimed to assess the knowledge level of medical interns in the Medina region, Saudi Arabia, regarding the diagnosis and management of anaphylaxis. Method A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in hospitals in Saudi Arabia by delivering a questionnaire designed to assess the level of awareness and knowledge (including signs, symptoms, and management of anaphylaxis) among medical interns in the Medina region. The data collected were coded and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0 (released 2013, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results The study involved 291 interns from the universities in the Medina region. Most participants (275, 94.5%) correctly defined anaphylaxis and identified food allergies or insect stings as the main triggers (254, 87.3%). The participants demonstrated good knowledge of health education practices and anaphylaxis symptoms, such as the importance of carrying an adrenaline auto-injector (269, 92.4%) and recognizing syncope as a cardiovascular symptom (196, 67.4%). Regarding management, most correctly identified the initial step as removing the allergen (226, 77.7%) and epinephrine as the preferred medication (256, 88.0%). Significant gender differences were observed in the knowledge of management aspects (P = 0.001, P = 0.002, P = 0.049, P = 0.004, P = 0.001). Conclusion The study found that most participants had a good understanding of the definition of anaphylaxis and its most common triggers. The participants also demonstrated knowledge of symptoms and signs associated with anaphylaxis and the appropriate management of anaphylaxis. However, there were some differences in knowledge between females and males, suggesting that further education and awareness campaigns may be needed to ensure an accurate and consistent understanding of anaphylaxis among both genders. Overall, the study highlights the importance of education and awareness in effectively managing anaphylaxis and preventing its complications.

Abstract:Background: The current annual incidence of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is 3-4 cases per one million population. CVT manifests itself with varying degrees of clinical presentation that may cause vital or morbid consequences if not treated and managed promptly. Studies have suggested varied levels of CVT public awareness. Aim: To assess the level of knowledge and public perception of CVT across the different socio-economic strata of the Saudi Adult population. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a mixed-method approach (an electronic questionnaire and phone interviews) for collecting the data. A validated questionnaire was distributed to consenting study participants and filled out to the best of their ability. The study setting was a nationwide survey conducted in Saudi Arabia and involved a representative portion of the study population. Results: A total of 1912 participants were included in this study. Overall, the majority of study participants (67.2%) had a low knowledge level of CVT on assessment, and only 2.6% had a high knowledge level of CVT. Younger age, female gender, working adults, higher education level, marital status, Saudi nationals, and place of residency were significantly associated with knowledge of CTV (p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study indicates a lower index of knowledge of CVT which offers an opportunity for much improvement in public perception and awareness of CVT in the study population. Our results can be utilized to target the demographics with the lowest knowledge via the most popular ways to gain information.

Abstract:The primary goal of this study was to investigate the knowledge, prevalence, and risk factors of cardiovascular diseases among individuals in the Najran region of Saudi Arabia. In the Najran region of Saudi Arabia, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted. Between September and October 2023, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of the general population aged 18 and up. The survey instrument asked about history and exposure, physician-diagnosed illnesses, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), medication use, and other risk factors. This research had a total of 2046 individuals. Around one-fifth of the study participants reported that they or a family member suffered from CVD, and arrhythmia was the most commonly reported; blood tests, cardiac catheterization, and ECG were the most commonly reported tests performed for CVD patients, around one-tenth of CVD patients reported that they do not have any chronic diseases other than CVD, and the vast majority of the patients confirmed their regular medical appointments. This is one of the first studies to investigate the knowledge, prevalence, and use of CVD drugs among individuals in the Najran region of Saudi Arabia. The study participants' lack of knowledge about CVD could lead to ineffective preventive measures and poor patient outcomes. The study's findings underscore the crucial need for more extensive and efficient educational initiatives that consider the targeted population's talents, attitudes, and perceptions.

Knowledge and awareness of the Saudi general public toward epistaxis: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Epistaxis is one of the most common ear, nose, and throat (ENT) emergencies that present to the emergency or primary care centers. Study aim: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of the Saudi general public toward epistaxis. Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional analytical study design. The questionnaire link was distributed using social media channels. The participants were adult Saudi nationals that live in Saudi Arabia. The data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire that assessed knowledge related to epistaxis. The knowledge score was calculated using the 10 knowledge evaluation questions. Each correct response was assigned a value of "one." The scores ranged from "zero" to "ten," with higher scores signifying greater knowledge. A percentage score was computed, and the participants' knowledge was classified as poor (% score: ≤50%), moderate (% score: 51 to 70%), and good (% score: 71 to 100%). Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was used for statistical analysis. Results: The study included 452 participants of whom 70.1% were females. Married individuals comprised 60.8% of the sample. The prevalence of self-reported epistaxis was 43.6% in the last 6 months. Among the participants, 42.9%, had "Poor" knowledge score, followed by 39.6% who had "moderate" score, and 17.5% had "Good" score. These results show that most participants had poor to moderate knowledge, with a minority demonstrating a good level of knowledge. All demographic variables have significantly influenced the adequacy of knowledge about epistaxis. Furthermore, participants who believed that the general public has insufficient knowledge on epistaxis had a significantly lower knowledge score ( p = 0.001). Conclusion: The present study found a non-satisfactory, low-to-moderate knowledge level of the Saudi general public toward epistaxis. We propose emphasizing public knowledge and education about first aid for epistaxis because proper first aid can minimize significant complications when done properly.

Abstract:Background Mental health treatment, particularly through psychotropic medications, is becoming increasingly prominent worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, the acceptance and understanding of these treatments are shaped by unique cultural and social factors. Despite some awareness, there remains a need for deeper insights into the public's perceptions and knowledge of psychotropic medications. This study aims to examine the awareness levels of psychotropic medications among the Saudi population, their perceived benefits and risks, the prevalence of their use, and any demographic differences in these perceptions. Methods Employing a quantitative, cross-sectional design, this study collected data via an online questionnaire from Saudi residents aged 18 and above. The questionnaire, validated by experts, covered demographic details, awareness and knowledge of psychotropic medications, and personal or vicarious experiences with these medications. Data analysis was performed using SPSS (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), applying descriptive and inferential statistics to provide a comprehensive view of the current landscape. The study was conducted over four weeks, from May 1, 2024, to May 31, 2024. Results The study indicated a demographic skew towards younger individuals, with a significant predominance of female respondents (70.86%, n=1024). A notable 63.52% (n=922) of participants reported being aware of psychotropic medications. Regarding knowledge, 37.83% (n=549) of respondents were somewhat knowledgeable about the benefits, while 37.57% (n=545) were somewhat knowledgeable about the risks. The prevalence of use was reported by 41.92% (n=608) of respondents, mainly through acquaintances rather than personal use. Younger, predominantly female, and well-educated individuals demonstrated higher levels of awareness and acceptance of psychotropic medications. Significant variations in perceptions were observed based on age, gender, and educational level. Respondents aged 18-24 years (52.52%, n=762) were significantly more likely to be aware of psychotropic medications (p < 0.01), and female respondents showed a higher acceptance rate (p < 0.05). Educational level also played a crucial role, with college-educated individuals (63.38%, n=919) displaying greater acceptance and awareness compared to those with only a high school education (28.24%, n=409) (p < 0.01). The general opinion on the effectiveness and adequacy of public information about psychotropic medications was mixed, with 52.93% (n=768) acknowledging their benefits while 31.92% (n=463) expressed concerns about side effects, indicating a need for improved public education. Conclusion The study emphasizes the importance of enhancing public education and awareness initiatives to improve knowledge and acceptance of psychotropic medications in Saudi Arabia. This could lead to better mental health outcomes and broader acceptance of these treatment options.
Awareness Level of Hypoglycemia Among Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 Patients in Al Qassim Region

Abstract:Background Hypoglycemia has a major impact on patient health and glycemic management during insulin therapy for both type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is the rate-limiting complication in diabetes management that prevents stringent glucose control. Objectives To assess the knowledge and awareness about hypoglycemia as a complication of T2D in adults in Al Qassim, Saudi Arabia. Methods This is a cross-sectional study done among type 2 diabetes patients in Al-Qassim, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from January to June 2022. A previously validated online questionnaire was disseminated through social media to gather information from respondents. Participants were chosen via a simple random sampling technique. Data analysis was completed using SPSS (version 23; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results Overall, 213 respondents were included in our study. The majority of them were females (70.9%). The participants' average age was 35.9 + 13.0 years. Our results revealed that the average awareness score of the study population was found to be 3.6 ± 1.1 (by using the Clarke method) and 3.7 ± 2.1 (by using the Gold method). Moreover, we found that impaired awareness of hypoglycemia's prevalence by Clarke's questionnaire was 52.1% and 53.5% by using the Gold questionnaire. In addition, almost half of the respondents reported weakness as a symptom of hypoglycemia over the last six months and unconsciousness over the last 12 months. Hypertension was the most commonly reported chronic disease by our participants. Lastly, factors such as age, gender, educational level, geographic distribution, and history of chronic illness did not show any significant association with impaired awareness of the prevalence of hypoglycemia. Conclusion According to our research, we concluded that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the region of Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, had insufficient knowledge about hypoglycemia as a complication of T2D. Moreover, the impaired awareness of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients was found to be high. Hence, there is a need for interventional programs to raise public awareness.

Abstract:Women's knowledge about perimenopause plays a crucial role in shaping their perception of related illnesses, influencing coping strategies, treatment adherence, and the overall management of this life stage. This cross-sectional study assessed the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding perimenopause among 409 Saudi women attending primary healthcare centers. Participants completed a structured questionnaire addressing demographic data, awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to perimenopause. While 75.3% of the participants were aware of perimenopause, only 17.4% could identify more than 10 out of 20 perimenopause symptoms. Commonly recognized symptoms included menstrual irregularity (67.7%), mood swings (66.0%), and mood fluctuations (50.4%). Only 23.0% had optimal knowledge about perimenopause complications. Additionally, 73.3% had not consulted a doctor for perimenopause-related issues. An analysis of the overall knowledge score showed a mean (SD) = 14.82 (5.64) out of 34. The level of knowledge was independently associated with a higher educational level, more frequent perimenopause symptoms, and regular doctor visits. This study reveals high awareness but insufficient knowledge among Saudi women regarding perimenopause symptoms and complications associated with higher perimenopause morbidity and a lack of engagement with healthcare professionals. It underscores the need for early and continued education on perimenopause, improved doctor–patient communication, and specific interventions to boost knowledge and attitudes toward perimenopause.
