Abstract:Aiming at a circular carbon economy, electrosynthesis is gaining in importance. The conversion of bioderived materials using green electrons from renewable energy sources tackles challenges like fluctuating energy production and the integration into the already existing supply networks. Herein, we discuss concepts for transforming 150-year old Kolbe chemistry into flow processes. In a recirculation setup, levulinic acid is converted to the Kolbe product 2,7-octanedione with up to 75% yield. Single-pass setups allow for continuous production, for which conversion scales linearly with contact time. It was found that non-Kolbe electrolysis is even better suited toward continuous production because of the possibility to use lower substrate concentrations. We present an example of an n-alkyl acid converted using different flow cells including a 3D printed vessel for a semibatch non-Kolbe reaction. The electrochemically more challenging β-hydroxy-acid is selectively converted to a drop-in oxygenate fuel, increasing the hourly production compared to the batch process by five times.

Abstract:Kolbe electrolysis enables the conversion of renewable feedstock using electric current to synthesize value‐added products. An electrochemical microreactor was used for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from fatty acids in aqueous solution with focus on the realization of a continuous process with electrolyte recycling and automated reconcentration. With our electrochemical microreactor and the use of an aqueous electrolyte it was possible to realize continuous Kolbe electrolysis including separation of the organic product phase, recycling of the aqueous electrolyte, and automated reconcentration of fatty acids based on inline Raman measurements. Electrolysis experiments revealed that the addition of aqueous KOH is essential to decrease the KHCO3 concentration and to stabilize the pH value of the electrolyte. Stable conversion (63–58 %) and Kolbe selectivity (90–92 %) could be achieved within 75 min. Removal of KHCO3 before reconcentration was provided as possible solution to maintain performance for increased electrolysis times.

Abstract:Mixtures of n-carboxylic acids (n-CA) as derived from microbial conversion of waste biomass were converted to bio-fuel using Kolbe electrolysis. While providing full carbon and electron balances, key parameters like electrolysis time, chain length of n-CA, and pH were investigated for their influence on reaction efficiency. Electrolysis of n-hexanoic acid showed the highest coulombic efficiency (CE) of 58.9±16.4 % (n=4) for liquid fuel production among individually tested n-CA. Duration of the electrolysis was varied within a range of 0.27 to 1.02 faraday equivalents without loss of efficiency. Noteworthy, CE increased to around 70 % by hetero-coupling when electrolysing n-CA mixtures regardless of the applied pH. Thus, 1 L of fuel could be produced from 12.4 mol of n-CA mixture using 5.02 kWh (<1 € L-1 ). Thus, a coupling with microbial processes producing n-CA mixtures from different organic substrates and waste is more than promising.

Abstract:Abstract Utilizing CO 2 in an electro-chemical process and synthesizing value-added chemicals are amongst the few viable and scalable pathways in carbon capture and utilization technologies. CO 2 electro-reduction is also counted as one of the main options entailing less fossil fuel consumption and as a future electrical energy storage strategy. The current study aims at developing a new electrochemical platform to produce low-carbon e-biofuel through multifunctional electrosynthesis and integrated co-valorisation of biomass feedstocks with captured CO 2 . In this approach, CO 2 is reduced at the cathode to produce drop-in fuels (e.g., methanol) while value-added chemicals (e.g., selective oxidation of alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acids and amines/amides) are produced at the anode. In this work, a numerical model of a continuous-flow design considering various anodic and cathodic reactions was built to determine the most techno-economically feasible configurations from the aspects of energy efficiency, environment impact and economical values. The reactor design was then optimized via parametric analysis.

Abstract:Electrochemical valorization of non‐food biomass‐derived carboxylates into fuels is promising for the conversion, storage, and distribution of renewable electricity. Herein, we demonstrate that biofuels, hydrogen, and bicarbonate can be simultaneously produced in an electrochemical cell by one‐step electrolysis of free fatty acids under ambient conditions on 3D self‐supported ultralow Pt loading (2 wt%) electrode. The three valuable products can naturally separate from each other during the electrolysis in the alkaline aqueous solution. The experimental suggests that Pt(100) and Pt(110) are favorable for the production of non‐Kolbe and Kolbe hydrocarbons, respectively. DFT calculation further clarifies the adsorption and stabilization of the reaction intermediates on Pt(100) and Pt(110).

Abstract:Kolbe Electrolysis of n‐octanoic acid in alkaline aqueous solution was conducted in flow, applying a bespoke electrochemical microreactor. Different parameters and reactor setups were studied, resulting in Kolbe selectivity of ≥90 % using an undivided cell setup with platinized titanium working electrodes. Besides, continuous operation with recycled electrolyte and reactor scaling was verified through concept studies. The Kolbe electrolysis is a promising reaction to combine the usage of electrons as reagents and the application of renewable generated carboxylic acids as raw materials producing value added chemicals. Within this study, the electrolysis was conducted in a specially developed concept electrochemical microreactor and draws the particular attention to continuous operation and reuse of the aqueous electrolyte as well as of the dissolved unreacted feedstock. The electrolysis was conducted in alkaline aqueous solution using n‐octanoic acid as model substance. Platinized titanium as anode material in an undivided cell setup was shown to give Kolbe selectivity above 90 %. During the technically relevant conditions of current densities up to 0.6 A cm−2 and overall electrolysis times of up to 3 h, a high electrode stability was observed. Finally, a proof‐of‐concept continuous operation and the numbering up potential of the ECMR could be demonstrated.

Abstract:The European Green Deal sends a strong signal for a climate-friendly and CO 2 -neutral economy. An important aspect to support this is a sustainable and reduced use of resources as well as efficient and green conversion technologies for renewable value-added products. For this reason, electrosynthetic approaches become increasingly important, as electrochemistry fulfils several criteria of green chemistry and offers the possibility to directly use current from renewable energy sources [3]. However, electrolysis and electrosynthesis currently often require the use of platinum group metals (PGM) and need separators, which are mostly based on perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFSA). Classical water electrolysis for production of green hydrogen also requires high overvoltage’s, which is due to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This is where coupling systems come in, in which the sluggish OER is replaced by a thermodynamically more efficient reaction, such as the electrooxidation of organic substances (EOO). An example of this is the electrooxidation of biobased 5-HMF or various sugars (xylose, glucose) to platform chemicals. When coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the EOO of 5-HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxylicacid (FDCA) requires a theoretical cell voltage of 0.3 V. In contrast, theoretical cell voltages of 1.23 V are required for the OER/HER [5]. With the focus on sustainable and energy-efficient systems, the simultaneous production of platform chemicals and green H 2 via paired electrolysis offers high potential. [1-7] Previous studies have mainly focused on electrode materials, morphology and its electrocatalytic activity in divided batch cells. A strongly alkaline environment is considered advantageous for the electro-organic oxidation reaction, while the HER is reported to be kinetically slower in alkaline than in acidic conditions. Overall, the coupled electrolysis of H 2 and platform chemicals is described as a promising technology in the development stage. [5-7] In this context, the present research explores paired electrosynthesis of platform chemicals and H 2 to advance sustainable and efficient energy sources. A central goal is the prototype development of an undivided flow reactor in TRL4. Particular attention will be paid to mild operating conditions (such as a mild-alkaline environment, low operating pressures and low temperatures), PGM-free catalysts and the elimination of PFSA materials. To achieve this goal, various milestones have been defined. Among them is the development of 3D electrodes with suitable and selective catalysts. These are to be electrochemically tested in a flow-through test cell on a laboratory scale. In order to create a basis for analysis, the electrode reactions were first investigated electrochemically in a typical divided H-cell and reference measurements were carried out on nickel-based materials. In this work, NiOOH sheet and foam electrodes were electrochemically produced and subsequently investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) followed by bulk electrolysis. On this basis, suitable analytics (HPLC, UV-VIS) were also determined to quantify and classify the derivatives of the electrosynthesis process. These pre-experiments form the basis for the ongoing development of initial concept ideas for a modular test cell that allows various materials and structures to be electrochemically investigated. Overall, this research contributes to advancing sustainable and efficient energy sources and enabling the production of platform chemicals from renewable raw materials. Abstract:Soapstock, mainly composed of organic acid salts, is generated in large quantities during the vegetable oil refining process. However, there are serious environmental and economic problems with conventional treatment, and a new approach for effective utilization is required. Our research explored the application of Kolbe electrolysis, a process typically reserved for water-soluble organic acids with low carbon number, to water-insoluble organic acids. We discovered that the reaction can occur effectively with the water-insoluble organic acids when they are in salt form, producing dimerized hydrocarbons and sodium hydroxide. These produced hydrocarbons can be used as alternative biofuels, such as combustion aids for power generation or as boiler fuel. Simultaneously, the caustic soda can be upcycled. We also examined various operating factors and clarified that Kolbe electrolysis proceeded efficiently at high temperatures, low voltages, and high concentrations. Interestingly, the heating values of the dimerized product increased with the length of the carbon chain of the organic acid, although the product yield in Kolbe electrolysis decreased slightly. Therefore, the Kolbe electrolysis treatment of organic acid salt is an upcycling system that produces more energy than it consumes, thereby achieving a positive energy balance.

Abstract:Renewable energy-driven hydrogen production from electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting has been widely recognized as a promising approach to utilize green energy resources and hence reduces our dependence on legacy fossil fuels as well as alleviates net carbon dioxide emissions. The realization of large-scale water splitting, however, is mainly impeded by its slow kinetics, particularly because of its sluggish anodic half reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), whose product O2 is ironically not of high value. In fact, the co-production of H2 and O2 in conventional water electrolysis may result in the formation of explosive H2/O2 gas mixtures due to gas crossover and reactive oxygen species (ROS); both pose safety concerns and shorten the lifetimes of water splitting cells. With these considerations in mind, replacing the OER with thermodynamically more favorable organic oxidation reactions is much more preferred, which will not only substantially reduce the voltage input for H2 evolution from water and avoid the generation of H2/O2 gas mixtures and ROS, but also possibly lead to the co-production of value-added organic products on the anode. Indeed, such an innovative strategy for H2 production integrated with valuable organic oxidation has attracted increasing attention in both electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. This feature article showcases the most recent examples along this endeavor. As exemplified in the main text, the oxidative transformation of a variety of organic substrates, including alcohols, ammonia, urea, hydrazine, and biomass-derived intermediate chemicals, can be integrated with energy-efficient H2 evolution. We specifically highlight the importance of oxidative biomass valorization coupled with H2 production, as biomass is the only green carbon source whose scale is comparable to fossil fuels. Finally, the remaining challenges and future opportunities are also discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we address the transition of the Kolbe electrolysis of valeric acid (VA) to n-octane as an exemplary electrosynthesis process from a batch reaction to a continuous, self-regulated process. Based on a systematic assessment of chemical boundary conditions and sustainability aspects, we propose a continuous electrosynthesis including a simple product separation and electrolyte recirculation, as well as an online-pH-controlled VA feeding. We demonstrate how essential performance parameters such as product selectivity (S) and coulombic efficiency (CE) are significantly improved by the transition from batch to a continuous process. Thus, the continuous and pH-controlled electrolysis of a 1 M valeric acid, starting pH 6.0, allowed a constantly high selectivity of around 47 % and an average Coulomb efficiency about 52 % throughout the entire experimental duration. Under otherwise identical conditions, the conventional batch operation suffered from lower and strongly decreasing performance values (Sn-octane, 60min =10.4 %, Sn-octane, 240min =1.3 %; CEn-octane, 60min =7.1 %, CEn-octane, 240min =0.5 %). At the same time, electrolyte recirculation significantly reduces wastes and limits the use of electrolyte components.
Energy‐Saving Electrochemical Hydrogen Production Coupled with Biomass‐Derived Isobutanol Upgrading

Abstract:The widespread application of electrochemical hydrogen production faces significant challenges, primarily attributed to the high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in conventional water electrolysis. To address this issue, an effective strategy involves substituting OER with the value‐added oxidation of biomass feedstock, reducing the energy requirements for electrochemical hydrogen production while simultaneously upgrading the biomass. Herein, we introduce an electrocatalytic approach for the value‐added oxidation of isobutanol, a high energy density bio‐fuel, coupled with hydrogen production. This approach offers a sustainable route to produce the valuable fine chemical isobutyric acid under mild condition. The electrodeposited Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and durability for the electro‐oxidation of isobutanol, achieving an impressive faradaic efficiency of up to 92.4% for isobutyric acid at 1.45 V vs. RHE. Mechanistic insights reveal that side reactions predominantly stem from the oxidative C–C cleavage of isobutyraldehyde intermediate, forming by‐products including formic acid and acetone. Furthermore, we demonstrate the electro‐oxidation of isobutanol coupled with hydrogen production in a two‐electrode undivided cell, notably reducing the electrolysis voltage by approximately 180 mV at 40 mA cm‐2. Overall, this work represents a significant step towards improving the cost‐effectiveness of hydrogen production and advancing the conversion of bio‐fuels.

Abstract:Converting CO 2 into usable chemicals and fuels electrochemically is a promising method to close the carbon cycle and store intermittent renewable energy. However, on combining it with a typical anode, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), results in both high energy consumption and produces only oxygen of little commercial value. Conversely, the chlor-alkali process is an established and profitable electrochemical process that produces Cl 2 and alkali (KOH). Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of integrating the chlorine evolution reaction (CER) together with the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to co-generate C 4 (2,3-furandiol) and C 3 (methylglyoxal) products. At a cell current of 1 mA, the system produces Cl 2 with a faradaic efficiency (FE) of ∼80% and CO 2 RR products at 100% faradaic efficiency without losses from crossover or degradation of the cathode. High faradaic efficiency is achieved for CO 2 RR products at higher current densities using a nickel phosphide Ni 2 P catalyst synthesized by a low temperature soft-template method. A technoeconomic assessment is presented that quantifies the economic advantage of combining the co-production of methylglyoxal and Cl 2 by integrating these two electrochemical processes.

Abstract:In the renaissance of organic electrochemistry, 150‐year‐old Kolbe chemistry offers a sustainable pathway to liquid energy carriers and commodities. Herein, easy‐access design methods for electrochemical microreactors employing 3D printing and simple post processing techniques are presented. The continuous Non‐Kolbe electrolysis of monomethyl succinic acid is studied as a test reaction for the production of an industrially relevant, green monomer. In a semi‐batch setup, methyl acrylate is produced with a maximum yield of 34 %, similar to results from a thoroughly optimized batch reaction in a prior study. In single‐pass experiments, a comparable faradaic efficiency of 54 % is achieved. The sustainable electrochemical route from lignocellulosic bio‐acids to liquid fuels and commodities is supplemented with a study of 3D printed microflow reactors as a low skill entrance level technology.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis allows the electrochemical upgrading of CO . However, higher productivities and energy efficiencies are needed to reach a viability that can make the technology transformative. Here we show how a biofilm-based microbial porous cathode in a directed flow-through electrochemical system can continuously reduce CO to even-chain C2-C6 carboxylic acids during 248 days. We demonstrate a 3-fold higher biofilm concentration, volumetric current density, and productivity than the state of the art, up to a new record of -35 kA m and 69 kg m day , at 60-97% and 30-35% faradaic and energy efficiencies, respectively. Most notably, the volumetric productivity resembles those achieved in lab-scale and industrial syngas (CO-H -CO ) fermentation and chain elongation fermentation. This work highlights key design parameters for efficient electricity-driven microbial CO reduction. There is need and room to improve the rates of electrode colonization and microbe-specific kinetics to scale-up the technology.

Abstract:Important improvements have been achieved in developing the coupling of electrochemical CO2 reduction to formate with its subsequent microbial conversion to polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) by Cupriavidus necator. The CO2 based formate electrosynthesis was optimised by electrolysis parameter adjustment and application of Sn based gas diffusion electrodes reaching almost 80% Faradaic efficiency at 150 mA cm−2. Thereby, catholyte with the high formate concentration of 441 ± 9 mmol L−1 was generated as feedstock without intermediate downstream processing for semi‐automated formate feeding into a fed‐batch reactor system. Moreover, microbial formate conversion to PHB was studied further, optimised, and successfully scaled from shake flasks to semi‐automated bioreactors. Therein, a PHB per formate ratio of 16.5 ± 4.0 mg g−1 and a PHB synthesis rate of 8.4 ± 2.1 mg L−1 OD−1 h−1 were achieved. By this process combination, an almost doubled overall process yield of 22.3 ± 5.5% was achieved compared to previous reports. Abstract:Biofuel produced by coupling electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion and microbial fermentation is one of the most viable al-ternatives to fossil fuels. It provides an effective route to mitigate global climate change and the energy crisis. In this study, a bio-elec-trocatalysis system was proposed in which acetic acid and formic acid were continuously catalyzed by solid electrolyte reactors and provided the carbon backbone and reducing equivalent, respec-tively, for the biosynthesis of 8-farnesene in engineered Yarrowia lipolytica. The addition of inexpensive polyphosphates aids in the regeneration of intracellular ATP. The final engineered strain was able to accumulate a 8-farnesene titer of 14.8 G 0.23 g L-1 from CO2. The overall energy efficiency of the described bio-electrocatal-ysis system for biofuel production was calculated to be -0.75%.

Abstract:Carbon-based products are essential to society, yet producing them from fossil fuels is unsustainable. Microorganisms have the ability to take up electrons from solid electrodes and convert carbon dioxide (CO2) to valuable carbon-based chemicals. However, higher productivities and energy efficiencies are needed to reach a viability that can make the technology transformative. Here, we show how a biofilm-based microbial porous cathode in a directed flow-through electrochemical system can continuously reduce CO2 to even-chain C2-C6 carboxylic acids over 248 days. We demonstrate a threefold higher biofilm concentration, volumetric current density, and productivity compared with the state of the art. Most notably, the volumetric productivity (VP) resembles those achieved in laboratory-scale and industrial syngas (CO-H2-CO2) fermentation and chain elongation fermentation. This work highlights key design parameters for efficient electricity-driven microbial CO2 reduction. There is need and room to improve the rates of electrode colonization and microbe-specific kinetics to scale up the technology.

Abstract:Carbon-based products are crucial to our society, but their production from fossil-based carbon is unsustainable. Production pathways based on the reuse of CO2 will achieve ultimate sustainability. Furthermore, the costs of renewable electricity production are decreasing at such a high rate, that electricity is expected to be the main energy carrier from 2040 onward. Electricity-driven novel processes that convert CO2 into chemicals need to be further developed. Microbial electrosynthesis is a biocathode-driven process in which electroactive microorganisms derive electrons from solid-state electrodes to catalyze the reduction of CO2 or organics and generate valuable extracellular multicarbon reduced products. Microorganisms can be tuned to high-rate and selective product formation. Optimization and upscaling of microbial electrosynthesis to practical, real life applications is dependent upon performance improvement while maintaining low cost. Extensive biofilm development, enhanced electron transfer rate from solid-state electrodes to microorganisms and increased chemical production rate require optimized microbial consortia, efficient reactor designs, and improved cathode materials. This Account is about the development of different electrode materials purposely designed for improved microbial electrosynthesis: NanoWeb-RVC and EPD-3D. Both types of electrodes are biocompatible, highly conductive three-dimensional hierarchical porous structures. Both chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and electrophoretic deposition were used to grow homogeneous and uniform carbon nanotube layers on the honeycomb structure of reticulated vitreous carbon. The high surface area to volume ratio of these electrodes maximizes the available surface area for biofilm development, i.e., enabling an increased catalyst loading. Simultaneously, the nanostructure makes it possible for a continuous electroactive biofilm to be formed, with increased electron transfer rate and high Coulombic efficiencies. Fully autotrophic biofilms from mixed cultures developed on both types of electrodes rely on CO2 as the sole carbon source and the solid-state electrode as the unique energy supply. We present first the synthesis and characteristics of the bare electrodes. We then report the outstanding performance indicators of these novel biocathodes: current densities up to -200 A m-2 and acetate production rates up to 1330 g m-2 day-1, with electron and CO2 recoveries into acetate being very close to 100% for mature biofilms. The performance indicators are still among the highest reported by either purposely designed or commercially available biocathodes. Finally, we made use of the titration and off-gas analysis sensor (TOGA) to elucidate the electron transfer mechanism in these efficient biocathodes. Planktonic cells in the catholyte were found irrelevant for acetate production. We identified the electron transfer to be mediated by biologically induced H2. H2 is not detected in the headspace of the reactors, unless CO2 feeding is interrupted or the cathodes sterilized. Thus, the biofilm is extremely efficient in consuming the generated H2. Finally, we successfully demonstrated the use of a synthetic biogas mixture as a CO2 source. We thus proved the potential of microbial electrosynthesis for the simultaneous upgrading of biogas, while fixating CO2 via the production of acetate.

Abstract:ConspectusCarbon dioxide emissions from consumption of fossil fuels have caused serious climate issues. Rapid deployment of new energies makes renewable energy driven CO2 electroreduction to chemical feedstocks and carbon-neutral fuels a feasible and cost-effective pathway for achieving net-zero emission. With the urgency of the net-zero goal, we initiated our research on CO2 electrolysis with emphasis on industrial relevance.The CO2 molecules are thermodynamically stable due to high activation energy of the two C═O bonds, and efficient electrocatalysts are required to overcome the sluggish dynamics and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. The CO2 electrocatalysts that we have explored include molecular catalysts and nanostructured catalysts. Molecular catalysts are centered on earth abundant elements such as Fe and Co for catalyzing CO2 reduction, and using Fe catalysts, we proposed an amidation strategy for reduction of CO2 to methanol, bypassing the inactive formate pathway. For nanostructured catalysts, we developed a carbon enrichment strategy using nitrogen-rich nanomaterials for selective CO2 reduction.Direct CO2 electroreduction from the flue gas stream represents the "holy grail" in the field, because typical CO2 concentration in flue gas is only 6-15%, posing a significant challenge for CO2 electrolysis. On the other hand, direct electroreduction of CO2 in the flue gas eliminates the carbon capture process and simplifies the overall carbon capture and utilization (CCU) scheme. However, direct flue gas reduction is frustrated by the reactive oxygen (5-8%), low CO2 concentration (6-15%), and potentially toxic impurities. Surface CO2 enrichment catalysts with high O2 tolerance could be viable for achieving direct CO2 electroreduction for decarbonization of flue gas.In addition to the electrocatalysts, the incorporation of catalysts into the electrolyzer and development of a suitable process was also investigated to meet industrial demands. A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is a zero-gap configuration with cathode and anode catalysts coated on either side of an ion exchange membrane. We adopted the MEA configuration due to the structural simplicity, low ohmic resistance, and high efficiency. The electrode factors (for example, membrane type, catalyst layer porosity, and MEA fabrication method) and the electrolyzer factors (for example, flow channels, gas diffusion layer) are critical to highly efficient operation. We separately developed an anion-exchange membrane-based system for CO production and cation-exchange membrane-based system for formate production. The optimized electrolyzer configuration can generate uniform current and voltage distribution in a large-area electrolyzer and operate using an industrial CO2 stream. The optimized process was developed with the targets of long-term continuous operation and no electrolyte consumption.
