Abstract:The formation of ultrafine particulate matter in the early stage of high-sodium lignite combustion was quantitatively investigated in a downward Hencken flat-flame burner under two ambiences of 1200K and 1500K. Spatially resolved measurement of the ultrafine particle size distributions (PSDs) was made by using a scanning mobility particle sizer with a high sensitivity in the 4.45–156.8nm size range. The experimental results indicate that, during the residence time of coal particles from ∼20 ms to ∼40 ms, the number PSDs under 1200K exhibit bi-modal while those under 1500K keep uni-modal. As time is evolved, the detected peak of ultrafine particles moves from 10.62nm to 80.54nm under 1200K, while that from 10.76nm to 38.46nm under 1500K. Then, a physico-chemical mechanism responsible for the incipient formation of ultrafine particles during high-sodium lignite combustion was developed and computed by solving a discrete-sectional population balance model. The number PSDs of ultrafine particles and the dynamic behavior of Na release measured in experiments are consistent with the simulation results. It is further divulged that the intrinsic cause of the PSD transition between different ambient temperatures is the high concentration of newly formed particles, instead of the enhanced collision frequency.
Kinetic Study on Co-Combustion of Pulverized Anthracite and Bituminite for Blast Furnace Injection

Abstract:Combustion behavior of single pulverized coals (PCs) and co-combustion characteristics of anthracite (AT) and bituminite (BT) blends with 20 wt.% volatile were studied by thermogravimetric experiments. The results indicated that reaction characteristics of PCs were closely related to their functional group structure and consequently, the pyrolysis of PCs with highly active functional groups initiated at lower temperatures. It was also noticed that the discrepancy of functional group structures between AT and BT might impair their interaction during combustion. The early exhaust of BT at low temperatures would possibly lead to an independent combustion of volatile and residual carbon and eventually the inefficient combustion of their blend. However, the mixing of AT and BT with similar functional group structures was more likely to achieve blends with superior combustion property. Simultaneously, non-isothermal kinetic analysis manifested that the combustion of blends followed random pore model (RPM), and therefore, the parameters calculated by RPM were more accurate to describe their combustion behavior. The kinetic calculation results showed that the activation energy required for decomposition of blends in early combustion stage was much lower owing to the excellent activity of volatile, while residual carbon with stable aromatic hydrocarbon demanded more energy to initiate its combustion.
Effects of pyrolysis temperature on pore structure and combustion characteristics of high-moisture Indonesia lignite semi-coke

Abstract:The N2 adsorption isothermal and thermo-gravimetric analysis was carried out to study the char-acteristics of semi-coke generated by high-moisture Indonesia lignite at different pyrolysis temperatures. The results indicate that,within the pyrolysis temperature range of 500 ℃ to 550 ℃,the surface area and pore volume of the semi-coke decreased first and then increased,finally they leveled off at 650 ℃.Under the same pyrolysis conditions,the char derived from high-moisture Indonesia lignite had much more devel-oped pore structure than that from the lignite with low moisture.The thermo-gravimetric analysis suggests that,with an increase in pyrolysis temperature,the maximum weight loss rate of the chars during combus-tion decreased first and then increased a little,it reached the minimum value at about 600 ℃.The activation energy of the char during combustion increased with the pyrolysis temperature.

Abstract:It is imperative to have an in-depth understanding of the coal dust explosion reaction mechanism to control and prevent coal explosions in the coal mining industry and promote the safe and efficient utilization of coal resources. The volatile gases are the primary components involved in coal dust explosion reactions. Therefore, studying the explosion reaction mechanism of volatile gases in coal dust is of great significance for revealing the process of coal dust explosion. This study conducted a thermogravimetric mass spectrometry (TG-MS) experiment to analyze the mass loss characteristics and volatile gas components during coal dust pyrolysis. Experimental results showed that the pyrolysis process of coal dust is mainly divided into three stages. The main components of volatile gases escaping from coal dust pyrolysis are CO, CH 4 , CO 2 , and H 2 O. Then, the Chemkin-Pro numerical simulation method was also introduced to analyze the mixture explosion reaction process of coal dust pyrolysis volatile gas. The sensitivity analysis and the rates of production analysis (ROP) of reactants, products, and intermediate products during the volatile gas explosion reaction were conducted. Furthermore, 14 components and 27 key elementary reactions involved in the reaction process were simplified and extracted. A simplified reaction pathway for the mixture explosion of coal dust pyrolysis volatile gas was constructed. This study introduces a novel approach to investigate the mechanism of homogeneous combustion of volatile gases in coal dust explosion reactions.

Abstract:Combustion behaviors and carbon monoxide emission characteristics of four kinds of coals and their blends, which were shaped into pellets, were investigated in a drop-tube furnace with various gas flow temperature (650-850 degrees C) and oxygen concentration (10-70%). Pellets of 6mm were hung by a wire basket and the combustion process was recorded at 60 frames/s using a high-performance camera. The ignition of the bituminous pellet was found to be homogeneous but it was heterogeneous for anthracite. When the oxygen concentration was more than 50%, an obvious fragment was found for the anthracite pellet, which caused higher surface temperature compared with the predicted temperature. The instantaneous CO emission of the bituminous coal had two peaks, whereas there was only one peak for that of anthracite. The total CO emission decreased exponentially when the temperature and oxygen concentration increased, and the oxygen concentration had more influence on the reduction of CO emission. CO generation was also affected by coal type; the higher the carbon and ash component of the coal, the more CO was generated with the same conditions.

Abstract:Coal dust explosion is a major threat to coal mine and other coal processing or utilizing industries. A deep investigation and accurate knowledge of coal dust explosion mechanism are still essential for the development of safety techniques for coal dust explosion prevention. In present work, the explosion severity of coal dust/air mixture, flame propagating properties, the characteristics of gas and solid residues had been studied. And, the correlations between the residues characteristics and explosion severity had been analyzed systematically. Results show that there is a linear relationship between explosion flame propagation speed (V F) and dust concentration (C dust). With the increasing of vitrinite reflectance (R o,max), explosion pressure (P m), explosion pressure rise rate (dP/dt)m, explosion index (K st) and flame propagation speed (V F) are all presenting a first increasing and then decreasing trends. During coal dust explosion, much more solid fragments are produced by the thermal stress and blast shock impacts. Compared with raw coal dust, particle size dispersities of all residues are increased obviously. Chemical functional groups in the coal dust particles, such as aromatic CH, aromatic C  C, aliphatic CH bonds, and oxygen-containing functional groups, etc. are all involved in coal dust explosion process. Furthermore, aliphatic CH and oxygen-containing matters may be the key factors influencing on the reactivity of dust explosion. For coal dust explosion under poor dust concentration conditions, the main gas components in the mixtures are CO2 product, residual oxygen and nitrogen gas in balance. The other combustible component (CO, CH4, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6 and C3H8) is almost undetectable. However, under dust-rich conditions, the combustible components would be increased sharply. The firstly detected combustible gases (CO, CH4, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6 and C3H8) can be used as the characteristic gases to determine the maximum explosion intensity of coal dust explosion.

Abstract:The combustion characteristics of the semi-coke from coal pyrolysis in heat,electricity,gas and tar polygeneration process were analyzed by use of thermogravimetric analyzer.The effect of pyrolysis temperature on combustion characteristics of semi-coke was studied using the combustible index K_r,the combustion characteristics index S,the combustion stability index R_W,the burn-out characteristics index C_b and the reaction activation energy of the samples.Results show that with the increase of pyrolysis temperature, the ignition performance,combustion stability and overall combustion performance of semi-coke degrade,while the burnout performance improves,and the combustion activation energy increases.Combustion reaction of semi-coke can be described by first order reaction,and the activation energy of four kinds of semi-coke are within the scope of 88.72 kJ /mol to 112.83 kJ/mol.

Abstract:A pyrolysis experiment was carried out in a tubular furnace using Ximeng lignite under N2 and CO2 atmospheres at the temperature between 600 °C and 1000 °C, in order to investigate the characteristics of lignite pyrolysis and oxy-fuel combustion under different atmospheres and to obtain their relationship. Further oxy-lignite combustion experiments under O2/N2 and O2/CO2 atmospheres were performed to investigate the oxy-lignite combustion characteristics under different reaction temperatures (from 600 °C to 1 000 °C) and different oxygen concentrations (from 21% to 60%). The effects of CO2 gasification on oxy-fuel combustion were explored based on the results of lignite pyrolysis. Results show that the Ximeng lignite gasification starts at 700 °C under CO2 atmosphere and the CO2 gasification is enhanced with the increase of temperature. CO2 mainly affects coal pyrolysis and combustion through gasification reaction at high temperature; the presence of gasification reaction after 700 °C can promote the oxy-fuel combustion process. For oxy-fuel combustion under O2/CO2 atmosphere, when the oxygen concentration is 30%, the temperature below 800 °C has greater effect on CO oxidation, while the temperature above 800 °C has greater effect on CO2 gasification. Moreover, there is little difference in the combustion time between two atmospheres of O2/CO2 and O2/N2 with the same oxygen concentration.

Abstract:Oil shale semicoke, formed in retort furnaces, is a source of severe environmental pollution and is classified as a dangerous solid waste. For the industrial application of oil shale semicoke in combustion, this present work focused on the thermal analysis of its combustion characteristics. The pyrolysis and combustion experiments of semicoke were conducted in a Pyris thermogravimetric analyzer. From the comparison of pyrolysis curves with combustion curves, the ignition mechanism of semicoke samples prepared at different carbonization temperatures was deduced, and was found to be homogeneous for semicoke samples obtained at lower carbonization temperature, shifting to heterogeneous with an increase in the carbonization temperature. The effect of carbonization temperatures and heating rates on the combustion process was studied as well. At last, combustion kinetic parameters of semicoke were calculated with the binary linear regression method, showing that activation energy will increase with increasing the heating rate.
Combustion kinetics study of oil shale semi-coke

Abstract:Combustion kinetics is the basis for studying the combustion characteristics of oil shale semi-coke particles. Thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used to conduct isothermal combustion experiments of oil shale semi-coke. Effects of combustion temperature and oxygen concentration on kinetics of oil shale semi-coke combustion were analyzed. Higher combustion temperature and oxygen concentration would lead to faster combustion rate. A kinetic model considering oxygen concentration effects was developed. It was found that the combustion rate of oil shale semi-coke is proportional to oxygen concentration to the 0.97 power. The kinetic model yielded good agreements with the experiments results, and could provide a base for further investigation on the combustion of large oil shale semi-coke particles.

Abstract:Non-intrusive measurement of dynamic and kinetic parameters during oxy-coal combustion has been carried out in an enclosed downward laminar flow reactor. High-speed OH-PLIF, CH* chemiluminescence, and pyrometer were used to determine the luminescence species, particle velocity, and particle temperature. A two-step model was established to predict the release of coal combustible based on the Arrhenius expression. The experimental data from traditional coal char analysis methods verified the optical kinetic model. Experiments showed that homogeneous ignition first occurred and dominated the upstream volatile combustion. The heterogeneous reaction was activated upstream due to volatile oxidization and became dominant downstream. The coal combustion formed an overlapping region between volatile and char oxidations. This region played a critical role in enhancing flame stability. The duration of the overlapping region was smaller in oxy-fuel combustion than in air-alike combustion due to the higher reaction rate and lower heat and mass diffusion. A temperature-dependent kinetic model was found to obey a two-step first-order Arrhenius expression with two pre-exponential factors (103.59±0.22 and 105.81±0.31 s−1) and two activation energies (173.1 and 278.0 kJ/mol) in air-alike combustion, and two pre-exponential factors (105.02±0.47 and 106.37±0.24 s−1) and two activation energies (217.0 and 291.1 kJ/mol) in oxy-fuel combustion. The kinetic predictions agree well with the experimental results of the combustible release in the corresponding tests.

Abstract:Methane/coal dust hybrid flame propagating in a vertical rectangle chamber was examined experimentally. In these experiments, the coal dusts were suspended in the chamber by premixed methane/air and the hybrid was ignited by an electrode spark. High speed microphotography was used to record the images of the propagating flame and ion current probes were used to explore the combustion reaction characteristics of the hybrid flame. The results show that, the combustion reaction process of the methane/air hybrid flame consists of three stages, and they are the methane combustion reaction stage, coal heterogeneous combustion reaction stage and coal char combustion reaction stage. While the diameter of the coal dusts increases, the duration of the methane combustion reaction increases slowly and that of the coal heterogeneous combustion reaction increases significantly.
Study on the Characteristics and Influence Factor of Methane and Coal Dust Gas/Solid Two-Phase Mixture Explosions

Abstract:This research aimed to the characteristics and influence factor of methane and coal dust gas/solid two-phase mixture explosions by experiment. Through comparative analysis of flame propagation characteristics, pressure, flame temperature and products, the characteristics of gas/solid explosions and its influence factor were analyzed. And the influence mechanism was also revealed. Results indicate that the coal dust parameter and methane concentration were the important influence factor on mixture explosions. Explosion intensity could be indirectly affected by influencing the flame propagation. Under the determined coal dust parameter, the explosion parameter showed a change trend of increase firstly and then decrease as the methane concentration increased. And it was the greatest at 6% methane concentration. However, the concentration of coal dust corresponding to the maximum pressure was variable and was decreased successively as the methane concentration increased. The corresponding dust concentrations were 500 g/m3 and 200 g/m3 under 2% and 10% methane concentrations, respectively. Meanwhile, the pressure all presented an increasing trend with the reduction of coal dust diameter under five coal dust concentrations, and the explosion intensity was the greatest at 300 g/m3 coal dust concentration. For 2% methane concentration, the explosion would not occur as the dust concentration was less than 400 g/m3. And the same phenomena also appeared as the methane concentration exceeded 10%. The explosion parameter presented the same change trend with the changes of methane concentration and coal dust parameters. Besides, the thermal stability and decomposition oxidation characteristics of burned coal dust were evidently changed compared with unburned coal dust. The weight loss rate and oxidation reaction rate were decreased, and the corresponding temperature was increased. It indicates that coal dust participated in gas/dust two-phase explosion reactions, and the pyrolysis reaction of volatile matter led to an obvious reduction in the weight loss and oxidation reaction rate. And the precipitation of volatile matter also resulted in an obvious pore structure on its surface. The physical parameters and internal components of coal dust were important factors affecting the reaction rates of gas/dust mixture explosions.
Structural characteristics and flammability of low-order coal pyrolysis semi-coke

Abstract:<p>This study focused on the effects of pyrolysis temperature on the structural characteristics and combustion properties of low rank coal. The combustion performance of semi-coke at different temperatures was studied by using low-temperature pyrolysis technology and non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis. The variation of functional groups and carbon structure was quantitatively analyzed. The results show that the temperature has a significant effect on the semi-coke structure and flammability. In the middle and low temperature pyrolysis stage, the removal of water, volatile matter and functional groups is mainly carried out, and the degree of condensation and graphitization of carbon atoms is not obvious. The semi-coke performance with a pyrolysis temperature of 1023K is close to that of anthracite. The pyrolysis process is accompanied by the destruction of carbonaceous and the formation of mesopores, which affects the combustion performance. As the temperature increases, the flammability of the semi-coke is lowered, and the chemical structure of the semi-coke is a major factor affecting the flammability. The method of Coast-Redfern integration was used to calculate the kinetic parameters of the semi-coke. As the pyrolysis temperature increases, the activation energy of the combustion reaction increases, which is consistent with the trend of combustion performance change.</p>

Abstract:A coal dust explosion is one of the most severe mine disasters. An experimental investigation was conducted on coal dust explosions using a semi-closed Hartmann tube with anthracite. The dynamic propagation process of the flame was synchronously recorded using a high-speed camera and the schlieren technique to investigate the flame propagation characteristics in coal dust explosions with different concentrations. The results show that the propagation process can be categorized into three stages: ignition, flame acceleration and flame spreading. The velocity inside the tube exhibits clear symmetry, although the distribution is generally not uniform. The flame shape at the tube outlet is classified into three regions: the unperturbed zone, the preheating zone, and the combustion zone, which are affected by the guiding shock wave. With an increase in concentration, the preheating zone becomes thinner. At the same concentration, the flame propagation velocity at the tube outlet initially increases and then decreases. With an increase in concentration, the peak flame velocity at the tube outlet gradually decreases, resulting in a delayed peak time. The experimental results contribute to process safety and further explore the coal dust explosion mechanism to prevent the occurrence of coal dust explosion accidents.

Abstract:In order to study the flame propagation characteristics and explosive overpressure characteristics of oil shale dust, the flame propagation and explosion characteristics of oil shale dust samples from two different regions (Longkou oil shale LKOS and Huadian oil shale HDOS) were tested by Hartman experimental device and 20 L spherical explosion experimental device respectively. The flame propagation velocity and brightness, the maximum explosion pressure (Pmax) and the maximum pressure rise rate ((dP/dt) max) obtained by experiments were analyzed. The research shows that the flame of oil shale dust develops slowly at the initial stage of explosion, and the propagation speed gradually increases with the development of the flame. The explosive flame of LKOS dust is brighter and fuller than that of HDOS dust with the same particle size, and has a faster propagation speed and stronger explosive. The Pmax and (dP/dt)max of LKOS dust are larger than HDOS dust. With the increase of dust mass concentration, the Pmax and (dP/dt)max of both show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The distributed activation energy model (DAEM) is used to calculate and analyze the pyrolysis volatiles release kinetic behavior of oil shale dust. The results show that the pyrolysis volatile analysis of LKOS has a higher rate of pyrolysis and volatilization, and the volatile gas is released faster during the explosion reaction. Which makes the explosive combustion reaction stronger.

Abstract:Combustion is an effective method for large-scale utilization of pyrolytic semi-coke (SC), a high order carbon-based solid fuel with low volatile content. The combustion characteristics of SC can be deeply understood through the study of physical and chemical properties. Taking SC as the research object and anthracite (YQ) with similar chemical composition as the control, the activation energy (E) of SC and YQ was calculated respectively by using model-free method and model method (16 typical mechanism functions). The pre-exponential factor (A), the change of enthalpy (ΔH), the change of entropy (ΔS), and the change of Gibbs free energy (ΔG) during the reaction were calculated. As a result, the pore inside of the particle is the main part of the pore structure of SC. The total specific surface area, pore-volume, and fractal dimension of SC are all larger than that of YQ. There is a lot of amorphous carbon in both SC and YQ, and the lattice spacing and graphitization degree of SC is smaller than that of YQ, but the average aromatic carbon lateral size and crystallite volume are much larger than that of YQ. The carbon in SC and YQ mainly exists in the form of aromatic carbon and aliphatic carbon, and the relative content of aromatic carbon in SC and YQ is basically the same. For the model method, the E of SC and YQ calculated by the three-dimensional diffusion (Spherical symmetric) mechanism function is the closest to the E obtained by the model-free method. Different from YQ, the main combustion stage of SC is composed of fixed carbon combustion and CaCO3 decomposition, and basically, no NH3 and HCN are generated. The volatile content of SC, the total specific surface area, and the pore volume in the pore are larger than that of YQ, which results in that the ignition temperature of SC is lower than that of YQ. The E and burn-out temperature of SC are higher than that of YQ due to the lower oxygen-containing functional group content, higher aromatic carbon content, fractal dimension and larger crystallite volume. Comprehensive physical, chemical, and combustion characteristics results show that using SC by combustion is more difficult than YQ.

Abstract:In thermal powered direct blow coal powder manufacturing at high-temperatures, the mechanism and key parameters of the spontaneous combustion of coal powder are not clear, which makes the prevention of such spontaneous combustion difficult. Therefore, the spontaneous combustion of coal powder for different oxygen concentrations (oxygen concentrations of 5, 7, 9, 13, 17, 21%) and volumes (21, 200, 300, 400, and 500 cm3) in a high-temperature environment was studied experimentally by the physical similarity simulated experimental appliance. The results indicate that when the oxygen concentration in the coal powders from the LHG sample (Liuhuanggou mine coal sample) and Hongliu mine coal sample (HL sample) samples was higher than 13% and 9%, respectively, the temperature of the center-point rises rapidly beyond other conditions. As the temperature increases, the concentrations of the CO and C2H4 gases increase gradually and the CO/CO2 ratio increases exponentially. However, the C2H4/C2H6 ratio is unstable when the temperature is lower than 180°C, beyond which it gradually increases. The minimum ignition temperature of the coal powder increases gradually with the decrease in the oxygen concentration, and the ignition delay time is also prolonged considerably.

Abstract:<p>Ignition and burnout characteristics of semi-coke and bituminous coal blends were investigated by thermogravimetric analyzer and drop tube furnace. The results showed that the ignitability index and the comprehensive combustion characteristic index of the blends decrease as the blending proportion of semi-coke increases, but the average activation energy of the blends increases gradually. Ignition mode of bituminous coal is changed from homogeneous to hetero-homogeneous ignition with the increasing of semi-coke content in the blends. When the mixing proportion of semi-coke is lower than 45%, the burnout rate is lower than the weighted value in the early stage of combustion and gradually higher than the weighted value with the development of combustion process. However, the burnout is always lower than the weighted value to mix with 67% semi-coke. Increasing furnace temperature from 850°C to 1050°C can improve the mid-term reaction process, alleviate the negative effects of semi-coke on the co-combustion process and increase the burnout rate. So less than 45% semi-coke blending ratio and increasing furnace temperature are recommended for semi-coke and bituminous coal co-combustion.</p>

Abstract:After drying, water-immersed coal is more prone to spontaneous combustion than raw coal. However, the influence mechanisms of particle size and water immersion duration on the physicochemical properties of coal dust, as well as the explosion and fire hazards of water-immersed coal dust, have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, two particle sizes of coal dust were selected, and experiments were conducted using the Godbert-Greenwald furnace, Hartmann tube, Muffle furnace, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. The study investigated the impact of different water immersion times, dust particle sizes, and dust concentrations on the sensitivity of coal dust fires and explosions, analyzed the process of functional group changes in coal dust particles in water and other mechanisms of transformation. The results indicated that the water immersion process increased the number of active functional groups on the surface of coal dust, significantly reducing the Minimum Ignition Temperature (MIT) and Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) values for different samples, and also enhancing the ignition sensitivity and peak temperature of coal dust layer fires. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the characteristics of coal dust and is of great significance for improving the prevention and control of coal dust fires and explosions.
