Abstract:With regard to solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZT) is a promising option due to its high ionic conductivity and steadiness against lithium metal. However, trace impurities, like Li 2 CO 3 or LiOH, can be easily formed on its surface under ambient atmosphere and significantly influence the conductivity. Herein, the hydrogen iodide (HI) acid vapor is employed to remove surface impurities and a thin LiI layer was in situ generated concurrently. The layer exhibits surprising wetting behavior and high stability towards Li metal and SSE. Benefiting from its unique characteristics, the interface resistance between the LLZT electrolyte and lithium electrode decreased from 6160 to 30 Ω cm 2 , and the critical current density (CCD) value achieved 1.5 mA cm −2 at room temperature. Specifically, the lithium symmetric battery can cycle steadily for more than 1000 hours at a current density of 0.6 mA cm −2 . Moreover, a cumulative Li plating capacity of 0.63 Ah cm −2 can be attained. The assembled solid-state batteries (SSBs) show outstanding cycling stability over prolonged cycles at 0.1 C (LiFePO 4 /LiCoO 2 @room temperature) and a high rate capacity (LiFePO 4 : 104.2 mAh g −1 at 0.8 C). This work provides a plausible approach to interfacial issues, thereby paving the path for tangible advancements in SSBs.

Abstract:The continuous development of solid-state electrolytes(SSEs) has stimulated immense progress in the development of all-solid-state batteries(ASSBs). Particularly, garnet-typed SSEs in formula of Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZO) are fctivity(<1 mS/cm), wide electrochemical window(<5 V), and good chemical electrochemical stability for lithium, which are critical factors to ensure a stable, and high performance ASSBs. Abstract:A stably lithiophilic Li2ZO3 is in situ constructed at garnet electrolyte surface and grain boundaries by interfacial modification with ZrO2 and Li2CO3 co‐sintering to eliminate the detrimental contaminants and lithium‐deficient phases, which significantly improves electrolyte air stability and provides a fast transport path for Li+ while hindering electron transport, ultimately enabling long cycle stability and dendrite‐free solid‐state batteries. Lithophobic Li2CO3/LiOH contaminants and high‐resistance lithium‐deficient phases produced from the exposure of garnet electrolyte to air leads to a decrease in electrolyte ion transfer ability. Additionally, garnet electrolyte grain boundaries (GBs) with narrow bandgap and high electron conductivity are potential channels for current leakage, which accelerate Li dendrites generation, ultimately leading to short‐circuiting of all‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs). Herein, a stably lithiophilic Li2ZO3 is in situ constructed at garnet electrolyte surface and GBs by interfacial modification with ZrO2 and Li2CO3 (Z+C) co‐sintering to eliminate the detrimental contaminants and lithium‐deficient phases. The Li2ZO3 formed on the modified electrolyte (LLZTO‐(Z+C)) surface effectively improves the interfacial compatibility and air stability of the electrolyte. Li2ZO3 formed at GBs broadens the energy bandgaps of LLZTO‐(Z+C) and significantly inhibits lithium dendrite generation. More Li+ transport paths found in LLZTO‐Z+C by first‐principles calculations increase Li+ conductivity from 1.04×10−4 to 7.45×10−4 S cm−1. Eventually, the Li|LLZTO‐(Z+C)|Li symmetric cell maintains stable cycling for over 2000 h at 0.8 mA cm−2. The capacity retention of LiFePO4|LLZTO‐(Z+C)|Li battery retains 70.5% after 5800 ultralong cycles at 4 C. This work provides a potential solution to simultaneously enhance the air stability and modulate chemical characteristics of the garnet electrolyte surface and GBs for ASSBs.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold significant promise as rechargeable energy storage systems due to their exceptionally high theoretical specific capacity and energy density. However, the widespread adoption of Li-S batteries has been impeded by challenges such as the diffusion of long-chain polysulfides and the formation of lithium dendrites when organic liquid electrolytes. To address these problems, a composite polymer electrolyte reinforced with Li6.28La3Al0.24Zr2O12 nanofiber (LLAZO NF) was developed. This electrolyte, featuring a garnet nanofiber filler within a PEO-based polymer system, exhibited superior ionic conductivity. The well-interconnected organic-inorganic network facilitated rapid and uninterrupted pathways for lithium-ion conduction, achieving a high Li-ion transference number. The incorporation of LLAZO NFs not only enhanced the electrochemical stability and mechanical properties of the composite polymer electrolyte, effectively mitigating lithium dendrite formation, but also contributed to the suppression of polysulfide diffusion during cycling. As a result, the all-solid-state Li-S battery utilizing this garnet-type composite polymer electrolyte demonstrated robust cycling stability and excellent rate performance at room temperature.

Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes have been widely investigated for lithium batteries since they provide a high degree of safety. However, their low ionic conductivity and substantial growth of lithium dendrites hamper their commercial applications. Garnet-type Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) is one of the most promising active fillers to advance the performance of the solid polymer electrolyte. Nevertheless, their performance is still limited due to their large interfacial resistance. Herein, we embedded the amorphous Li2O2 (LO) into LLZTO particles via the quenching process and successfully achieved an interfacial layer of Li2O2 around LLZTO particles (LLZTO@LO). Amorphous Li2O2 acts as a binder and showed an excellent affinity for Li+ ions which promotes their fast transference. Moreover, the stable and dense interfacial Li2O2 layer enhances interfacial contact and suppresses the lithium dendrite growth during the long operation cycling process. The PEO/10LLZTO@2LO solid composite polymer electrolyte (SCPE) showed the highest ionic conductivity of 3.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 40 °C as compared to pristine LLZTO-based SCPE. Moreover, the Li│(PEO/10LLZTO@2LO) │Li symmetric cell showed a stable and smooth long lifespan up to 1100 h at 40 °C. Furthermore, the LiFePO4//Li full battery with PEO/10LLZTO@2LO SCPE demonstrated stable cycling performance for 400 cycles. These results constitute a significant step toward the practical application of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SS-LMBs).
Asthma and wheezy bronchitis in a British national sample.

Abstract:The relationship between biosocial factors and childhood asthma and wheezy bronchitis in a British national sample was examined. At age 11, 3 1/2% of the children in this sample were reported to have suffered from either asthma or asthma-wheezy bronchitis; an additional 8.8% reported wheezy bronchitis without asthma. Significantly more boys than girls had asthma at this age. The presence of asthma and wheezy bronchitis was found to associate with parental occupation, household amenities, and noncrowding in the home, as well as to vary by geographic region. Discriminant analysis showed that it was possible to differentiate between the three groups comprising asthma and wheezy bronchitis, wheezy bronchitis only, and nonsufferers, due mainly to allergy-related factors such as eczema.

Abstract:Garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolytes recently have attracted tremendous interest as they have the potential to enable all solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) owing to high ionic conductivity (10(-3) to 10(-4) S cm(-1)), negligible electronic transport, wide potential window (up to 9 V), and good chemical stability. Here we present the key issues and challenges of LLZO in the aspects of ion conduction property, interfacial compatibility, and stability in air. First, different preparation methods of LLZO are reviewed. Then, recent progress about the improvement of ionic conductivity and interfacial property between LLZO and electrodes are presented. Finally, we list some emerging LLZO-based solid-state batteries and provide perspectives for further research. The aim of this review is to summarize the up-to-date developments of LLZO and lead the direction for future development which could enable LLZO-based ASSLBs.

Abstract:An integrated architecture based on garnet electrolyte and composite cathode is developed for all‐solid‐state lithium‐oxygen batteries, where the interfacial impedance is significantly reduced and the triple‐phase boundaries in the cathode for the electrochemical reaction is increased, enabling the battery to exhibit extremely high initial full discharge capacity and enhanced cycling stability. All‐solid‐state lithium‐oxygen (Li‐O2) battery is considered to be a promising next‐generation energy storage system to address the issues related to low specific capacity, unsafety and unstable electrochemistry that exist in conventional liquid Li‐O2 batteries. However, current solid‐state Li‐O2 batteries still encounter the challenge of high impedance at the electrode/electrolyte interface. In addition, the deficiency of triple‐phase boundaries (containing Li+, e− and O2) limits the active sites for electrochemical reaction in the battery cathode. Herein, an integrated architecture based on a garnet electrolyte Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) and a porous composite cathode for high‐performance all‐solid‐state Li‐O2 batteries is developed. The unique internal structure effectively reduces the interfacial impedance of the battery, provides a large number of active sites at triple‐phase boundaries and increases the electrochemical stability. As a result, the obtained batteries can deliver a superior high full discharge capacity of 13.04 mA h cm−2 and an excellent cyclic performance (86 cycles). In addition, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations further demonstrate the effectiveness of this design in enhancing the interfacial performance, electrochemical performance, and stability of the battery. This study is thus expected to facilitate practical applications for truly all‐solid‐state Li‐O2 batteries, and even for other systems of metal‐oxygen (air) batteries.

Abstract:All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) hold great promise for next-generation energy storage technologies owing to their advantage in different aspects such as energy density, safety, and wide temperature tolerance. However, the use of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) instead of liquid ones meanwhile brings serious concerns related to the point-to-point contact between SSEs and electrodes, which is known to result in high interface resistance and inhomogeneous distribution of charges during the Li + plating/stripping process, eventually leading to a premature failure of ASSBs. This review focuses on the garnet-type SSEs in the formula of Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO), and discusses the structure-performance relationship of this ceramic electrolyte in detail to achieve a clear understanding of its Li + transmission mechanism. Meanwhile, the challenges of cubic phase LLZO (c-LLZO) for their application in solid-state batteries (SSBs) are demonstrated by the Li/LLZO interface, which features the importance of Li metal wettability and dendrite suppression for sustainable performance. Furthermore, this review summarizes the recent research strategies to combat these contact issues at the Li/LLZO interface, highlighting the essential role played by surface modification of LLZO electrolytes. Following the obtained insights, perspectives for future research on LLZO to accelerate its potential development of SSBs in commercialized applications are also provided. Graphical

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is a promising candidate as the anode for high‐energy‐density solid‐state batteries. However, interface issues, including large interfacial resistance and the generation of Li dendrites, have always frustrated the attempt to commercialize solid‐state Li metal batteries (SSLBs). Here, it is reported that infusing garnet‐type solid electrolytes (GSEs) with the air‐stable electrolyte Li3PO4 (LPO) dramatically reduces the interfacial resistance to ≈1 Ω cm2 and achieves a high critical current density of 2.2 mA cm−2 under ambient conditions due to the enhanced interfacial stability to the Li metal anode. The coated and infused LPO electrolytes not only improve the mechanical strength and Li‐ion conductivity of the grain boundaries, but also form a stable Li‐ion conductive but electron‐insulating LPO‐derived solid‐electrolyte interphase between the Li metal and the GSE. Consequently, the growth of Li dendrites is eliminated and the direct reduction of the GSE by Li metal over a long cycle life is prevented. This interface engineering approach together with grain‐boundary modification on GSEs represents a promising strategy to revolutionize the anode–electrolyte interface chemistry for SSLBs and provides a new design strategy for other types of solid‐state batteries.

Abstract:Doping different sites on Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet solid‐state electrolyte (SSE) can adjust and optimize its crystal phase, leading to enhanced properties for LLZO electrolyte. Additionally, surface‐modifications (atomic and molecular layer deposition and surface reactions), interlayer‐modifications (polymer, inorganic compound, and composite interlayers), and composite anodes can significantly alter interfacial‐contact between the lithium‐metal anode and the SSE in solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries. Due to their substantial energy density, rapid charging and discharging rates, and extended lifespan, lithium‐ion batteries have attained broad application across various industries. However, their limited theoretical capacity struggles to meet the growing demand for battery capacity in consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace applications. As a promising substitute, solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries (SSLBs) have emerged, utilizing a lithium‐metal anode that boasts a significant theoretical specific capacity and non‐flammable solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) to address energy density limitations and safety concerns. For SSLBs to attain large‐scale commercial viability, SSEs require heightened ionic‐conductivity, improved mechanical characteristics, and enhanced chemical and electrochemical stability. Furthermore, tackling the challenges related to interfacial contacts between SSEs and the lithium‐metal anode is imperative. This review comprehensively overviews the primary methods used to prepare garnet SSEs and summarizes doping strategies for various sites on Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet SSEs, aiming to optimize the crystal phase to achieve more favorable properties in SSE applications. Additionally, it discusses strategies for modifying the interfacial contact between the lithium‐metal anode and SSEs, classifying them into three areas: surface modification, interlayer‐modification, and composite anodes. Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) can essentially improve battery safety. Garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is considered one of the most promising solid electrolytes for SSBs. However, the performance of LLZO-based SSBs is limited by the large cathode/electrolyte interfacial resistance. High-rate and long-cycling SSBs were achieved only after adding flammable polymer or liquid electrolyte in the cathode at the sacrifice of safety. Here, we show that an all-ceramic cathode/electrolyte with an extremely low interfacial resistance can be realized by thermally soldering LiCoO2 (LCO) and LLZO together with the Li2.3-xC0.7+xB0.3-xO3 solid electrolyte interphase through the reaction between the Li2.3C0.7B0.3O3 solder and the Li2CO3 layers that can be conformally coated on both LLZO and LCO. The all-solid-state Li/LLZO/LCO battery with such an all-ceramic cathode/electrolyte exhibits high cycling stability and high rate performance, constituting a significant step toward the practical applications of SSBs.
Interface engineering of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12via in situ built LiI/ZnLix mixed buffer layer for solid-state lithium metal batteries

Abstract:Garnet-type solid-state Li metal batteries (SSLMBs) are viewed as hopeful next-generation batteries due to their high energy density and safety. However, the major obstacle to the development of garnet-type SSLMBs is the lithiophobicity of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO), resulting in a large interfacial impedance. Herein, a LiI/ZnLix mixed ion/electron conductive buffer layer is constructed at the interface by an in situ reaction of molten Li metal with ZnI2 film. This mixed buffer layer ensures close contact between the Li metal and garnet, significantly reducing interfacial impedance. As a result, the Li symmetrical cell with the LiI/ZnLix buffer layer shows an interface impedance of 10.3 Ω cm2, much lower than that of the cell with bare LLZTO (1173.4 Ω cm2). The critical current density (CCD) is up to 2.3 mA cm-2, and the symmetric cells present a long cycle life of 2000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 and 800 h at 1.0 mA cm-2. In addition, the full cells assembled with the LiFePO4 cathode show a capacity of 143.9 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.5C with a low-capacity decay of 0.021% per cycle. This work reveals a simple, feasible, and practical interface modification strategy for solid-state Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Replacement of Li-ion liquid-state electrolytes by solid-state counterparts in a Li-ion battery (LIB) is a major research objective as well as an urgent priority for the industry, as it enables the use of a Li metal anode and provides new opportunities to realize safe, non-flammable, and temperature-resilient batteries. Among the plethora of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) investigated, garnet-type Li-ion electrolytes based on cubic Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) are considered the most appealing candidates for the development of future solid-state batteries because of their low electronic conductivity of ca. 10-8 S cm-1 (RT) and a wide electrochemical operation window of 0-6 V vs. Li+/Li. However, high LLZO density (5.1 g cm-3) and its lower level of Li-ion conductivity (up to 1 mS cm-1 at RT) compared to liquid electrolytes (1.28 g cm-3; ca. 10 mS cm-1 at RT) still raise the question as to the feasibility of using solely LLZO as an electrolyte for achieving competitive energy and power densities. In this work, we analyzed the energy densities of Li-garnet all-solid-state batteries based solely on LLZO SSE by modeling their Ragone plots using LiCoO2 as the model cathode material. This assessment allowed us to identify values of the LLZO thickness, cathode areal capacity, and LLZO content in the solid-state cathode required to match the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries (ca. 180 Wh kg-1 and 497 Wh L-1) at the power densities of 200 W kg-1 and 600 W L-1, corresponding to ca. 1 h of battery discharge time (1C). We then discuss key challenges in the practical deployment of LLZO SSE in the fabrication of Li-garnet all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Garnet electrolyte-based lithium (Li) metal batteries, which employ garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) as electrolyte and Li metal as anode, are regarded as a promising candidate for high-energy batteries. However, Li dendrites formation as well as poor solid-solid contact between the electrolyte and electrodes result in high interfacial resistance, large polarizations, and low Coulombic efficiency. Herein, we demonstrated that solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) soft interface layer deposited on garnet electrolyte (Ta-doped LLZO (LLZTO)) surface along with 3D Li metal anode can address these obstacles. In this architecture, SPE layer was deposited on garnet electrolyte surface to endow connected interface between the electrolyte and electrodes and thus settled the interface contact issue. 3D Li metal anode can accomplish dendrite-suppression by increasing Li ions deposition sites to lower the effective current density and render a uniform Li nucleation with 3D frameworks. With this ingenious arrangement, the solid-state 3D Li︱SPE-LLZTO-SPE︱3D Li symmetrical cell exhibits a stable voltage profile over 700 h and solid-state LiFePO4︱SPE-LLZTO-SPE︱3D Li full cell also shows an extremely superior cyclability and high Coulombic efficiency even at 90 °C. This work provides an alternative option for manufacturing safe and stable solid-state Li metal batteries.

Abstract:The huge interfacial resistance caused by Li2CO3 on garnet (LLZO) electrolyte and the lithium-dendrite growth through garnet greatly hinder the development of solid-state batteries (SSBs). Here, both the problems are simultaneously addressed through a general strategy of engineering garnet pellet with a layer of ZnO with oxygen vacancies (OV-ZnO). The OV-ZnO not only protects LLZO from being exposed to wet air, but also reacts spontaneously with lithium-metal to in-situ form an ionic conducting Li x ZnO interphase. The as-formed interphase improves the Li/LLZO contact, reduces the huge interface resistance caused by Li2CO3, suppresses the lithium-dendrite growth, and promotes the lithium transport between LLZO and Li-metal. As a result, an Li/Li symmetric cell with OV-ZnO coated LLZO pellet shows a low area specific resistance of 55 Ω cm2, a stable plating/stripping process for 200 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2, and a record-high critical current density of 1.4 mA cm−2 ever reported at room temperature. Moreover, this approach of coating metal oxide with oxygen vacancies on garnet electrolytes has been extended to other metal oxides, such as copper oxide (OV-CuO), titanium dioxide (OV-TiO2) and indium oxide (OV-In2O3).

Abstract:The optimal methods for the synthesis of 0, 1, 2, and 3 dimensional Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) in industry are summarized. The Li+ transport path of LLZO and the influence of doping at Li, La, Zr, and O sites on ionic conductivity are reviewed, and the mechanism is analyzed. The application of LLZO in solid‐state batteries is summarized and the remaining problems and challenges are provided from the perspective of application. Solid‐state batteries (SSBs) are under development as high‐priority technologies for safe and energy‐dense next‐generation electrochemical energy storage systems operating over a wide temperature range. Solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) exhibit high thermal stability and, in some cases, the ability to prevent dendrite growth through a physical barrier, and compatibility with the "holy grail" metallic lithium. These unique advantages of SSEs have spurred significant research interests during the last decade. Garnet‐type SSEs, that is, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), are intensively investigated due to their high Li‐ion conductivity and exceptional chemical and electrochemical stability against lithium metal anodes. However, poor interfacial contact with cathode materials, undesirable lithium plating along grain boundaries, and moisture‐induced chemical degradation greatly hinder the practical implementation of LLZO‐based SSEs for SSBs. In this review, the recent advances in synthesis methods, modification strategies, corresponding mechanisms, and applications of garnet‐based SSEs in SSBs are critically summarized. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation of the challenges and development trends of LLZO‐based electrolytes in practical applications is presented to accelerate their development for high‐performance SSBs.

Abstract:As promising next generation energy storage system, all solid state lithium batteries offer great potential for achieving high energy density and improved safety over lithium batteries with liquid counterpart. Dense microstructure with high ionic conductivity are prerequisites for solid electrolyte. The promising Li-garnet electrolyte suffers from poor sinterability, which results in porous structure and large grain boundary resistance. Herein, we report that the poor sinterability of garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 most likely relates to the Li2CO3 formed on particle surface, and SiO2 is an efficient additive to scavenge the surface Li2CO3 and so significantly improve the densification of electrolyte. The reaction product Li4SiO4 of SiO2 with Li2CO3 is a Li-ion conductor, which exists at grain boundary and so can facilitate the grain boundary lithium ion diffusion. An addition of 1 mol.% SiO2, with respect to the total lithium content in Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO), significantly increases the relative density of LLZTO pellet by 28% and the conductivity by one order of magnitude, reaching 3.84×10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature by a conventional solid state sintering. A symmetric lithium cell assembled with such dense LLZTO electrolyte can cycle well for 260 h compared with unmodified LLZTO running only for 72 h before short-circuit.
