Abstract:Abstract All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), which use solid electrolytes instead of liquid ones, have become a hot research topic due to their high energy and power density, ability to solve battery safety issues, and capabilities to fulfill the increasing demand for energy storage in electric vehicles and smart grid applications. Garnet-type solid electrolytes have attracted considerable interest as they meet all the properties of an ideal solid electrolyte for ASSLBs. The garnet-type Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) has excellent environmental stability; experiments and computational analyses showed that this solid electrolyte has a high lithium (Li) ionic conductivity (10 −4 –10 −3 S·cm −1 ), an electrochemical window as wide as 6 V, stability against Li metal anode, and compatibility with most of the cathode materials. In this review, we present the fundamentals of garnet-type solid electrolytes, preparation methods, air stability, some strategies for improving the conductivity based on experimental and computational results, interfacial issues, and finally applications and challenges for future developments of LLZO solid electrolytes for ASSLBs.

Abstract:The scientific community is exploring novel all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) as a substitute for conventional lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes. These ASSBs possess several attractive advantages, including improved safety, extended temperature range, and improved energy density. Solid-state electrolytes (SSE) have become significant parts of ASSBs. For example, garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) SSE has shown promise among the various forms of SSEs. LLZO demonstrates ionic conductivity of 10−3 to 10−4 S/cm and remarkable chemical durability in combination with lithium metal. Because of these qualities, LLZO is a good option for solid-state Li-metal batteries. Various advancements have been made in garnet-type SSEs and ASSBs since the discovery of LLZO in 2007, resulting in enhanced electrochemical durability and energy density. The advantages of LLZO include durability and safety under elevated temperatures, high-temperature stability, and safety of garnet-type electrolytes. This review article examines current developments in garnet-type LLZO electrolytes, considering experimental research and theoretical findings. We discuss the synthetic methodology, modifications, the robustness of these garnet-based electrolyte materials, novel blueprints for nanostructures, understanding of the electrolyte decomposition pathway, and routes to overcome the electrolyte decomposition pathway with regard to LZZO. Additionally, battery architectures and integrations are explored. The review provides a comprehensive outlook for garnet-based LLZO electrolyte research, focusing on its applications in different solid-state battery concepts, such as Li-ion, Li-S, and Li-air batteries. It highlights the opportunities and perspectives that garnet-type LLZO electrolytes offer, serving as a roadmap for future advancements in SSEs and batteries.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Secondary batteries based on metal anodes (e.g., Li, Na, Mg, Zn, and Al) are among the most sought-after candidates for next-generation mobile and stationary storage systems because they are able to store a larger amount of energy per unit mass or volume. However, unstable electrodeposition and uncontrolled interfacial reactions occuring in liquid electrolytes cause unsatisfying cell performance and potential safety concerns for the commercial application of these metal anodes. Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) having a higher modulus are considered capable of inhibiting difficulties associated with the anodes and may enable building of safe all-solid-state metal batteries, yet several challenges, such as insufficient room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor interfacial stability between the electrode and the electrolyte, hinder the large-scale development of such batteries. Here, research and development of SSEs including inorganic ceramics, organic solid polymers, and organic-inorganic hybrid/composite materials for metal-based batteries are reviewed. The comparison of different types of electrolytes is discussed in detail, in the context of electrochemical energy storage applications. Then, the focus of this study is on recent advances in a range of attractive and innovative battery chemistries and technologies that are enabled by SSEs. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to foresee the development of SSEs.

Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) with high energy density and excellent safety are expected to be the next-generation energy storage devices to replace traditional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Garnet solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have attracted extensive attention due to their many advantages, such as high ionic conductivity and stability. This review systematically summarizes the challenges and solutions faced by garnet SSBs. First, the structural evolution of garnet SSEs is introduced, the advanced nature of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is pointed out, and the kinetic mechanism and stability of LLZO and the corresponding improvement schemes are discussed. Second, a variety of solid-state interface engineering techniques that may break the bottleneck of LLZO solid electrolyte is introduced. Third, the batteries built upon the state-of-the-art LLZO are summarized and compared to LIBs to demonstrate their high energy and safety. Finally, two new perspectives on the cost and sustainability are provided for the interest of readers from battery industry. We investigate the entire life cycle of garnet SSBs from production to disposal, providing guidance for the realization of inexpensive and environmentally friendly SSBs with high ionic conductivity, stability, and energy density.

Abstract:All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) hold great promise for next-generation energy storage technologies owing to their advantage in different aspects such as energy density, safety, and wide temperature tolerance. However, the use of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) instead of liquid ones meanwhile brings serious concerns related to the point-to-point contact between SSEs and electrodes, which is known to result in high interface resistance and inhomogeneous distribution of charges during the Li + plating/stripping process, eventually leading to a premature failure of ASSBs. This review focuses on the garnet-type SSEs in the formula of Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO), and discusses the structure-performance relationship of this ceramic electrolyte in detail to achieve a clear understanding of its Li + transmission mechanism. Meanwhile, the challenges of cubic phase LLZO (c-LLZO) for their application in solid-state batteries (SSBs) are demonstrated by the Li/LLZO interface, which features the importance of Li metal wettability and dendrite suppression for sustainable performance. Furthermore, this review summarizes the recent research strategies to combat these contact issues at the Li/LLZO interface, highlighting the essential role played by surface modification of LLZO electrolytes. Abstract:Garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolytes recently have attracted tremendous interest as they have the potential to enable all solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) owing to high ionic conductivity (10(-3) to 10(-4) S cm(-1)), negligible electronic transport, wide potential window (up to 9 V), and good chemical stability. Here we present the key issues and challenges of LLZO in the aspects of ion conduction property, interfacial compatibility, and stability in air. First, different preparation methods of LLZO are reviewed. Then, recent progress about the improvement of ionic conductivity and interfacial property between LLZO and electrodes are presented. Finally, we list some emerging LLZO-based solid-state batteries and provide perspectives for further research. The aim of this review is to summarize the up-to-date developments of LLZO and lead the direction for future development which could enable LLZO-based ASSLBs.

Abstract:All-solid-state Li-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) have been widely studied to achieve Li-ion batteries (LIBs) with high safety and energy density. Recent reviews and experimental papers have focused on methods that improve the ionic conductivity, stabilize the electrochemical performance, and enhance the electrolyte/electrode interfacial compatibility of several solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), including oxides, sulfides, composite and gel electrolytes, and so on. Garnet-structured Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is highly regarded an SSE with excellent application potential. However, this type of electrolyte also possesses a number of disadvantages, such as low ionic conductivity, unstable cubic phase, and poor interfacial compatibility with anodes/cathodes. The benefits of LLZO have urged many researchers to explore effective solutions to overcome its inherent limitations. Herein, we review recent developments on garnet-structured LLZO and provide comprehensive insights to guide the development of garnet-structured LLZO-type electrolytes. We not only systematically and comprehensively discuss the preparation, element doping, structure, stability, and interfacial improvement of LLZOs but also provide future perspectives for these materials. This review expands the current understanding on advanced solid garnet electrolytes and provides meaningful guidance for the commercialization of ASSLIBs.

Abstract:High‐capacity cathodes and anodes in energy storage area are required for delivering high energy density due to the ever‐increasing demands in the applications of electric vehicles and power grids, which suffer from significant safety concerns and poor cycling stability at the current stage. All‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) have been considered to be particularly promising within the new generation of energy storage, owing to the superiority of safety, wide potential window, and long cycling life. As the key component in ASSLBs, individual solid electrolytes that can meet practical application standards are very rare due to poor performance. To the present day, numerous research efforts have been expended to find applicable solid‐state electrolytes and tremendous progress has been achieved, especially for garnet‐type solid electrolytes. Nevertheless, the garnet‐type solid electrolyte is still facing some crucial dilemmas. Hence, the issues of garnet electrolytes' ionic conductivity, the interfaces between electrodes and garnet solid electrolytes, and application of theoretical calculation on garnet electrolytes are focuses in this review. Furthermore, prospective developments and alternative approaches to the issues are presented, with an aim to improve understanding of garnet electrolytes and promote their practical applications in solid‐state batteries.

Abstract:The continuous development of solid-state electrolytes(SSEs) has stimulated immense progress in the development of all-solid-state batteries(ASSBs). Particularly, garnet-typed SSEs in formula of Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZO) are fctivity(<1 mS/cm), wide electrochemical window(<5 V), and good chemical electrochemical stability for lithium, which are critical factors to ensure a stable, and high performance ASSBs. This review will focus on the challenges related to LLZOs-based electrolyte, and update the recent developments in structural design of LLZOs, which are discussed in three major sections: (i) crystal structure and the lithium-ion transport mechanism of LLZO; (ii) single-site and multi-site doping of Li sites, La sites and Zr sites to enhance Li ions conductivity(LIC) and stability of LLZO; (iii) interface strategies between electrodes and LLZO to decrease interface area-specific resistance(ASR).

Abstract:To satisfy the ever-increasing demand for higher energy density, solid-state batteries (SSBs) have received significant attention due to their potential in providing energy densities greater than 400 Wh kg−1. And as a key material in SSBs, the garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) electrolyte is particularly promising because of its high ionic conductivity at room temperature and excellent chemical stability against Li metal. And although great progress has been achieved for garnet electrolytes, many critical issues remain in terms of the practical application of garnet-based SSBs with truly high energy densities. Based on this, this review will provide an overview of the current progress in solid garnet batteries in terms of electrolyte fabrication and interfacial engineering in prototype cells. In addition, various strategies used to meet application requirements are comprehensively reviewed, including not only strategies to enhance energy density, but also methods to enhance rate capability, extend cycle life, decrease cost and reduce thermal runaways. Furthermore, crucial challenges are presented and future research directions are proposed in the development of high-performance solid lithium batteries.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Garnet-type solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have been attracting much attention in the field of electrochemical energy storage technology, due to the fact that they have the advantages of high ionic conductivity, good thermal stability, excellent chemical stability with metallic lithium, and wide electrochemical window. In this review, the major problems and challenges of garnet-type SSEs are described from the aspects of ionic conductivity, chemical and electrochemical stabilities, and electrode/electrolyte interfaces in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). Firstly, the ionic transport mechanism, the stability mechanism, and the strategies of improving ionic conductivity and stability of the garnet-type SSE are summarized. Then, the latest electrode/electrolyte interfaces modification strategies are reported. The applications of three-dimensional (3D) structure, alloys, composite electrode, and intermediate layers to modify the interfaces of garnet-type SSEs are mainly introduced. Finally, challenges and the great perspectives of garnet-type SSEs based ASSLBs are discussed. It is hoped that this review will facilitate the future development of ASSLBs.

Abstract:The rapid surge in sales of electronic devices and electric vehicles has created an ever-increasing demand for batteries that excel in terms of both safety and energy density. Solid-state batteries (SSBs), as compared to conventional liquid electrolyte-based lithium-ion batteries, have emerged as pioneers at the forefront of the transformation of lithium-ion battery technology, distinguished by their exceptional safety features and elevated energy density. Among the numerous candidate materials in the realm of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), the garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) stands out due to its exceptional ionic conductivity, shear modulus, and chemical stability. However, inadequate contact between LLZO and the cathode, anode, and even within LLZO itself have been a substantial impediment to the practical application of solid-state batteries. Abstract:Doping different sites on Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet solid‐state electrolyte (SSE) can adjust and optimize its crystal phase, leading to enhanced properties for LLZO electrolyte. Additionally, surface‐modifications (atomic and molecular layer deposition and surface reactions), interlayer‐modifications (polymer, inorganic compound, and composite interlayers), and composite anodes can significantly alter interfacial‐contact between the lithium‐metal anode and the SSE in solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries. Due to their substantial energy density, rapid charging and discharging rates, and extended lifespan, lithium‐ion batteries have attained broad application across various industries. However, their limited theoretical capacity struggles to meet the growing demand for battery capacity in consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace applications. As a promising substitute, solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries (SSLBs) have emerged, utilizing a lithium‐metal anode that boasts a significant theoretical specific capacity and non‐flammable solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) to address energy density limitations and safety concerns. For SSLBs to attain large‐scale commercial viability, SSEs require heightened ionic‐conductivity, improved mechanical characteristics, and enhanced chemical and electrochemical stability. Furthermore, tackling the challenges related to interfacial contacts between SSEs and the lithium‐metal anode is imperative. This review comprehensively overviews the primary methods used to prepare garnet SSEs and summarizes doping strategies for various sites on Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet SSEs, aiming to optimize the crystal phase to achieve more favorable properties in SSE applications. Abstract:The optimal methods for the synthesis of 0, 1, 2, and 3 dimensional Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) in industry are summarized. The Li+ transport path of LLZO and the influence of doping at Li, La, Zr, and O sites on ionic conductivity are reviewed, and the mechanism is analyzed. The application of LLZO in solid‐state batteries is summarized and the remaining problems and challenges are provided from the perspective of application. Solid‐state batteries (SSBs) are under development as high‐priority technologies for safe and energy‐dense next‐generation electrochemical energy storage systems operating over a wide temperature range. Solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) exhibit high thermal stability and, in some cases, the ability to prevent dendrite growth through a physical barrier, and compatibility with the "holy grail" metallic lithium. These unique advantages of SSEs have spurred significant research interests during the last decade. Garnet‐type SSEs, that is, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), are intensively investigated due to their high Li‐ion conductivity and exceptional chemical and electrochemical stability against lithium metal anodes. However, poor interfacial contact with cathode materials, undesirable lithium plating along grain boundaries, and moisture‐induced chemical degradation greatly hinder the practical implementation of LLZO‐based SSEs for SSBs. In this review, the recent advances in synthesis methods, modification strategies, corresponding mechanisms, and applications of garnet‐based SSEs in SSBs are critically summarized. Abstract:All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted much attention in recent years, due to their high energy density, excellent cycling performance, and superior safety property. As the key factor of all-solid-state batteries, solid electrolyte determines the performance of the batteries. Garnet-typed cubic Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZO) has been reported as the most promising solid electrolyte on the way to ASSBs. Thin film electrolyte could contribute to a higher energy density and a lower resistance in a battery. This short review exhibits the latest efforts on LLZO thin film and discusses the different preparation methods, together with their effects on characteristics and electrochemical performances of the solid electrolyte film.

Abstract:This paper reviews the current status of, and new progress in, the field of solid state electrolytes (SSE) for lithium ion batteries. In addition to a review of current technologies, we are also presenting our novel results on pulsed laser processing of garnet based SSEs, specifically Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO). LLZO powders with a tetragonal structure were prepared by a sol–gel technique, then a pulsed laser annealing process was employed to covert the powders to cubic LLZO without any loss of lithium. The tetragonal LLZO exhibited a Li ion conductivity of 1.8×10−7 S/cm, whereas the laser annealed cubic LLZO showed a Li ion conductivity of 1.0×10−4 S/cm at room temperature. A systematic study of the effect of pulsed laser annealing (PLA) on the crystal structure, morphology, composition, and ionic conductivity of LLZO was performed via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. These results demonstrate that PLA is a powerful processing technique for synthesizing the high ionic conductivity cubic phase of LLZO at relatively low temperatures, as compared to conventional methods.
