Abstract:In this study, three critical parameters that influence the effective composite properties of Carbon nanoparticles were tested and modeled using finite elements through Digimat Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software, employing representative volume elements (RVE). The primary parameters under consideration are the fiber shape, fiber orientation, and fiber volume fraction. Four of the many different shapes of Carbon nanoparticles, namely Tubes, Disk, Sphere, and Cylinder, were investigated, coupled with four distinct orientations for tubes: horizontal, aligned at 45°, random, and vertical each varying in the carbon fiber volume fraction. The material of choice was pure epoxy resin because of the nature of the bonding between its two phases and its wide range of usage. Forces were applied along the X-axis, coupled with shear in the XY plane. This study revealed that the orientation of CNTs primarily influences the Elastic Young's modulus, whereas the size of the CNTs has the main effect on the shear modulus, followed by orientation. The horizontal CNTs demonstrated superior Young's modulus, but the random orientation had a more pronounced impact on the shear modulus variation. Regarding the analysis of the nanoparticles shapes, the disk shape with fixed orientation revealed the highest elastic modulus, after which the cylinder shape and the sphere recorded the minimum elastic modulus among the three studied shapes.

Characterization of the flexural behavior of a reactive graphitic nanofibers reinforced epoxy using a non-linear damage model

Abstract:In our previous work, a nano-epoxy was developed based on the preparation of reactive graphitic nanofibers (r-GNFs). The objective of this work is to study the effect of the r-GNFs in an epoxy resin on the mechanical properties of the resulting nano-epoxy composites. Three-point bending tests were carried out for the pure epoxy and nano-epoxy materials with 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5wt% r-GNFs to obtain the flexural behaviors. The nano-epoxy composite containing 0.3wt% of r-GNFs showed the best flexural properties including highest flexural strength, modules and ductility values among all the tested materials. Non-linear fracture mechanics (NLFM) was applied to analyze the phenomena occurred during the bending tests. A non-linear damage model was used to interpret the flexural stress–strain relationships of the tested materials, which showed agreement with the testing results. The fracture surfaces of the nano-epoxy composites were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the morphological features on the SEM images also reveals that the nano-epoxy composites are tougher than the pure epoxy resin.

Abstract:A new hyperelastic material model is proposed for graphene-based structures, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanocones (CNC). The proposed model is based on a set of invariants obtained from the right surface Cauchy-Green strain tensor and a structural tensor. The model is fully nonlinear and can simulate buckling and postbuckling behavior. It is calibrated from existing quantum data. It is implemented within a rotation-free isogeometric shell formulation. The speedup of the model is 1.5 relative to the finite element model of Ghaffari et al. [1], which is based on the logarithmic strain formulation of Kumar and Parks [2]. The material behavior is verified by testing uniaxial tension and pure shear. The performance of the material model is illustrated by several numerical examples. The examples include bending, twisting, and wall contact of CNTs and CNCs. The wall contact is modeled with a coarse grained contact model based on the Lennard-Jones potential. The buckling and post-buckling behavior is captured in the examples. The results are compared with reference results from the literature and there is good agreement.

The Effects of Morphology and Temperature on the Tensile Characteristics of Carbon Nitride Nanothreads.

Abstract:Very recently synthesized carbon nitride nanothreads (CNNTs) by compressing crystalline pyridine show outperform diamond nanothreads in chemical and physical properties. Here, using first-principles-based ReaxFF molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a comprehensive investigation on the mechanical characteristics of seven experimentally synthesized CNNTs has been performed. All CNNTs exhibit unique tensile properties that change with molecular morphology, atomic arrangement and the distribution of nitrogen in the skeleton. The CNNTs with more effective covalent bonds at cross-sections are more mechanically robust. Surprisingly, a tiny CNNT with periodic unit structures of 5462-cage shows extreme ductility because of the formation of a linear polymer via 4-step dissociation-and-reformation of bonds at extremely low temperatures in the range of 1-15 K; however, it shows brittle failure at one cross-section with low ductility at higher temperatures similar to other CNNTs at different temperatures; this offers a feasible way to design a kind of lightweight material that can be used in ultra-low temperature conditions, for example, the harsh deep space environment. The results also show that temperature significantly affects the fracture stress and rupture strain but not the effective stiffness. The analysis of atomic bond orders and bond lengthening reveals that the unique nonlinear elasticity of CNNTs is attributed to the occurrence of local bond transformations. This study provides physical insights into the tensile characteristics of CNNTs for the design and application of CNNT-based nanostructures as multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Thermoelastic constants seem to be important in designing metal-based composite structures under temperature variations. In the current research, the finite element (FE) model has been utilized as a numerical tool to predict equivalent thermoelastic constants of the aluminum matrix composite (AMC) filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The representative volume element of the model has been constructed such that CNTs are randomly oriented and dispersed into the AMC. As an important microstructural factor involved in the CNT-filled AMC, the interfacial reaction product between the two basic phases which may be generated during the composite fabrication has been taken into account. To understand the effect of critical microstructural factors, the equivalent thermoelastic constant of the CNT-filled AMC has been plotted as a function of the percentage and diameter of the nanotube, as well as the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, thermoelastic property and size of the interfacial region. Since CNTs seldom remain straight inclusions, both straight and wavy configurations of nanotubes have been micromechanically analyzed. When the CNT volume fraction is 5%, the thermoelastic constants of the AMC containing wavy and straight CNTs are 21.8 × 10 –6 1/K and 20.6 × 10 –6 1/K, respectively. A parametric study has been carried out to understand the role of alignment of CNTs in the AMC thermoelastic constant. It is found when the nanotube content is 5 vol%, the thermoelastic constants of the AMC containing randomly oriented and aligned CNTs are 21.8 × 10 –6 1/K and 19.8 × 10 –6 1/K, respectively. The FE method has been utilized to estimate the equivalent thermoelastic constants of unidirectionally AMCs reinforced by long and short CNTs with the wavy configuration. Comparisons have been made between the present FE predictions and experiments as well as results of other micromechanics approaches.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to develop an effective model for carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-reinforced cement composites by investigating effects of different microstructures on Young's modulus of the composites. Different types of representative volume elements (RVEs) were developed, including aligned CNTs, random CNTs, random CNTs with curvature, random CNTs with agglomeration, random CNTs with agglomeration and curvature, random CNTs considering interphase between the cement matrix and CNTs, and random CNTs with agglomeration, curvature, and void. The influence of parameters was also studied by varying one of the parameters while keeping the others constant to study their individual effect on our model. The results revealed that the most effective model of predicting experimental results is the model with curved CNTs, incorporating agglomeration and void in the RVE. Developing an effective model for the mechanical properties of nanocomposite materials can help in designing and optimizing such materials to meet the requirements of various applications.

Abstract:A new mesoscale mechanical model, describing elastic interactions in carbon nanotubes (CNT) and other nanofilaments, is proposed. Functional form of the developed model is based on enhanced vector model (EVM) that describes basic types of bond deformations: tension, torsion, bending and shear. Calibration of bond stiffnesses is performed by adjusting EVM parameters to reproduce both CNT's deformation energies and shape observed in a full-atomistic simulation. The parameters obtained are compared with the ones obtained from Euler-Bernoulli beam theory considerations. It is found that after certain critical length of a tested CNT specimen its stiffness parameters become length-independent and can be used in mesoscale simulations of CNTs of arbitrary length.

Abstract:A micromechanical model is analytically developed to estimate the elastic modulus and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs). The effects of two important microstructural features, including the CNT clusters and the waviness on the thermo-elastic response are investigated. The formation of aluminum carbide (Al4C3) layer due to the interaction between the CNT and the metal matrix is considered. A good agreement is found between the available experimental data and the simulation results considering the waviness, clustering, and Al4C3 interphase. The influences of volume fraction, and dispersion type of CNTs and Al4C3 layer thickness on the elastic modulus and the CTE of the CNT-metal nanocomposites are examined. The non-straight shape and the clustering of CNTs are two critical factors that can significantly degrade the thermo-elastic properties. From the mechanical viewpoint on designing the CNT-metal nanocomposites, producing the homogeneous microstructure without the CNT clusters and using the straight CNTs are necessary factors to obtain the maximum level of the thermomechanical performances. The numerical results show that the formation of the Al4C3 interphase may improve the MMNC macroscopic engineering constants. It is observed that aligning the CNTs into the metal matrixes leads to a significant improvement in the MMNC thermo-elastic properties. The proposed micromechanical approach can be a suitable model to predict the elastic modulus and the CTE of the CNT-reinforced MMNCs considering the important microstructural features.

Abstract:A two-stage molecular dynamics (MD)-finite element (FE) modeling method is developed based on the concepts of representative volume element (RVE) and equivalent solid fibers (ESFs) containing functionalized carbon nanotubes (ESFs-fCNTs). First, the influences of nanotubes' chirality, different percent of functionalization ( Pfunc ), various functional atoms, and polymers on the tensile and shear properties of the fCNTs inserted into the polymer matrix (fCNTs/polymer) are discovered using MD simulations. Then, using MD information as input data, the effective Young's modulus of polymeric unit cell strengthened by ESFs-fCNTs (ESFs-fCNTs/polymer) is explored through FE modeling. The ratio of effective Young's modulus of the unit cell ( EUC ) to Young's modulus of the polymeric cube ( EP ) is reported and all findings ( EUCEP ) are compared to the ESFs-pure CNTs/polymer results as well. It is found that longitudinal Young's modulus ( Ex ) of nanofillers/polymer RVEs affects remarkably the EUCEP of the ESFs-nanofillers/polymer nanocomposites. The Ex decreases by increasing the Pfunc. Generally, the reinforcing impact of zigzag nanotubes compared to armchair ones on the Ex of polymer RVEs is more considerable. Additionally, FE-based results illustrate that as the volume fraction of ESFs ( vfESF ) increases, the EUCEP is enhanced. At a specific Pfunc, the reinforcing effect of the ESFs-armchair and zigzag fCNTs is more in favor of polyethylene nanocomposites than that of the polypropylene systems. Graphical

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced cementitious composite (CNRC) with excellent electrical and self-sensing properties, which enables it to serve as an intrinsic sensor for structural health monitoring (SHM). However, the requirements of modern industry for accurate calculation and performance design of engineering materials are not met by traditional experimental studies alone. The finite element method (FEM) has the advantages of simplicity of operation, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness, and it has been widely used in the property verification and prediction of various composite materials. In this article, the constitutive model, FEM modeling method, and simulation process of CNRC along with existing model types, innate relations, and model parameters are reviewed, and the corresponding mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical coupling properties of CNRC under different parameters are systematically analyzed by FEM method. By combining different uncertainty parameters and model types, the advantages and disadvantages of FEM for mechanical, electromechanical coupling, and SHM applications of CNRC modeling are explored. The results are in good agreement with those in the existing CNRC experiment, which effectively proves the reliability of the FEM method in CNRC research. This work is important to develop a sound theoretical model verification and performance prediction for early applications in SHM of CNRC.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, the mechanical behavior of epoxy polymer nanocomposite with continuous single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with and without vacancy defects has been investigated based on two approaches of deformation, molecular mechanics (static) and molecular dynamics. In this regard, molecular simulation has been performed on the basis of the compass force field. In order to validate the research steps, the results obtained for pure epoxy polymer were compared with similar molecular dynamic simulations, which confirmed the simulation process. The research process proposed a method for controlling the symmetry of the system during equilibration with an asymmetric barostat. The Souza-Martins barostat was also used to apply loading and deformation control over a constant strain rate range. The results showed that in both deformation approaches (with and without calculating the contribution of kinetic energy), the presence of defects improved the transverse tensile and shear moduli, while the longitudinal tensile modulus decreased. Also, the improvement and decrease of the longitudinal tensile modulus and longitudinal shear modulus of the nanocomposite in comparison with the net polymer have been observed in both approaches, respectively. As a general result, it was observed that the contribution of kinetic energy has a major effect on the mechanical properties of pristine and defective nanocomposites.

Abstract:Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a leading nanoscale technique known for its significant advantages in the analysis of soft materials and biological samples. Traditional AFM data analysis is often based on the Hertz model, which assumes perpendicular indentation of a planar sample. However, this assumption is not always valid due to the varying geometries of soft materials, whether natural, synthetic or biological. In this study, we present a new theoretical model that incorporates correction coefficients into Hertz's model to account for cone-like and spherical probes, and to consider local tilt at the probe-sample interface. We validate our model using finite element analysis (FEA) simulations and experimental AFM measurements on tilted polyacrylamide gels. Our results highlight the need to include local tilt at the probe-sample contact to ensure accurate AFM measurements. This represents a step forward in our understanding of the elastic properties at the surface of soft materials in the broadest sense.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of geometric nonlinearities on the dynamical behaviour of carbon nanotube (CNT) strengthened imperfect composite beams by considering both axial and transverse motions. For the given general model of the beam, the system modelling has been adopted from the literature and the nonlinear dynamic response in presence of an external harmonic load is examined for the first time in the case of axially functionally graded (AFG) CNT fibre, which is used for strengthening the structure. Porosity imperfection with the ability to vary though the thickness is modelled using simple, closed and open-cell models; the porosity variation is formulated using uniform, linear, symmetric and un-symmetric models. The geometrical imperfection is considered by allowing the beam to have an initial curved longitudinal axis and the mass imperfection is modelled by introducing a concentrated mass at a certain point of the beam. Using a combination of the Galerkin scheme together with dynamic equilibrium technique, the influence of different imperfections and porosities on the frequency response of the system is examined. It is shown that, for the case of AFG CNT strengthened beam, geometrical imperfection can change the nonlinear response from a hardening to a softening behaviour. Besides, the importance of considering the interaction between axial and transverse motion is examined in detail. The influence of lumped mass imperfection and its position is also studied showing that this type of imperfection can change the nonlinear behaviour of the system significantly. Moreover, the influence of increasing the CNT volume fraction and functionally spreading the CNTs through the length is discussed. The results are useful for analysing the resonance phenomena in strengthened structures facing various imperfections.Graphic abstract

Coarse-grained elastic network modelling: A fast and stable numerical tool to characterize mesenchymal stem cells subjected to AFM nanoindentation measurements

Abstract:The knowledge of the mechanical properties is the starting point to study the mechanobiology of mesenchymal stem cells and to understand the relationships linking biophysical stimuli to the cellular differentiation process. In experimental biology, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a common technique for measuring these mechanical properties. In this paper we present an alternative approach for extracting common mechanical parameters, such as the Young's modulus of cell components, starting from AFM nanoindentation measurements conducted on human mesenchymal stem cells. In a virtual environment, a geometrical model of a stem cell was converted in a highly deformable Coarse-Grained Elastic Network Model (CG-ENM) to reproduce the real AFM experiment and retrieve the related force-indentation curve. An ad-hoc optimization algorithm perturbed the local stiffness values of the springs, subdivided in several functional regions, until the computed force-indentation curve replicated the experimental one. After this curve matching, the extraction of global Young's moduli was performed for different stem cell samples. The algorithm was capable to distinguish the material properties of different subcellular components such as the cell cortex and the cytoskeleton. The numerical results predicted with the elastic network model were then compared to those obtained from hertzian contact theory and Finite Element Method (FEM) for the same case studies, showing an optimal agreement and a highly reduced computational cost. The proposed simulation flow seems to be an accurate, fast and stable method for understanding the mechanical behavior of soft biological materials, even for subcellular levels of detail. Moreover, the elastic network modelling allows shortening the computational times to approximately 33% of the time required by a traditional FEM simulation performed using elements with size comparable to that of springs.

Abstract:Atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides a three-dimensional topographic representation of a sample surface, at nanometre resolution. Computational simulations can aid the interpretation of such representations, but have mostly been limited to cases where both the AFM probe and the sample are hard and not compressible. In many applications, however, the sample is soft and therefore deformed due to the force exerted by the AFM tip. Here we use finite element modelling (FEM) to study how the measured AFM topography relates to the surface structures of soft and compressible materials. Consistent with previous analytical studies, the measured elastic modulus in AFM is generally found to deviate from the elastic modulus of the sample material. By the analysis of simple surface geometries, the FEM modelling shows how measured mechanical and topographic features in AFM images depend on a combination of tip-sample geometry and indentation of the tip into the sample. Importantly for the interpretation of AFM data, nanoparticles may appear larger or smaller by a factor of two depending on tip size and indentation force; and a higher spatial resolution in AFM images does not necessarily coincide with a more accurate representation of the sample surface. These observations on simple surface geometries also extend to molecular-resolution AFM, as illustrated by comparing FEM results with experimental data acquired on DNA. Taken together, the FEM results provide a framework that aids the interpretation of surface topography and local mechanics as measured by AFM.

Abstract:As an important type of potential interconnection nanostructures, metallic carbon nanotube bundles (CNBs) are expected to replace the copper interconnect lines as interconnects in the microelectronic packaging. By embedding discontinuous CNBs in a soft matrix for considering the intertube Van der Waals interaction, a finite element (FE) model is proposed to estimate the effective mechanical properties of CNBs. We also propose a molecular dynamics (MD) model to predict the intertube spacing and elastic parameters of both the carbon nanotubes and soft matrix by combining the analytical equations. The present FE numerical results show a good agreement with the analytical and MD results. Compared to the micromechanics-based analytical model, the proposed FE model can give a more exact description for the CNBs with a finite size while offering tremendous improvements in computational cost. The influences of the number of the tubes, the radius of the individual tube, and the length of the CNBs on the effective elastic properties, are especially examined. It is found that the geometric factors play an important role in characterizing the effective elastic properties.

Abstract:A meshless atomic-scale computational method was developed by taking account of structural dynamic evolution, such as atomic bond breakage and regeneration. This method, based on energy minimization, is an extension of B. Liu et al.’s atomic-scale finite element method (AFEM). The proposed method is faster than the standard conjugate gradient method and AFEM and can thus significantly save computational time especially in studying large-scale problems. The bond breakage of single-wall carbon nanotubes was studied.

Abstract:Carbonized elastomer-based composites (CECs) possess a number of attractive features in terms of thermomechanical and electromechanical performance, durability in aggressive media and facile net-shape formability, but their relatively low ductility and strength limit their suitability for structural engineering applications. Prospective applications such as structural elements of micro-electro-mechanical systems MEMS can be envisaged since smaller principal dimensions reduce the susceptibility of components to residual stress accumulation during carbonization and to brittle fracture in general. We report the results of in situ in-SEM study of microdeformation and fracture behavior of CECs based on nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) elastomeric matrices filled with carbon and silicon carbide. Nanostructured carbon composite materials were manufactured via compounding of elastomeric substance with carbon and SiC fillers using mixing rolling mill, vulcanization, and low-temperature carbonization. Double-edge notched tensile (DENT) specimens of vulcanized and carbonized elastomeric composites were subjected to in situ tensile testing in the chamber of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) Tescan Vega 3 using a Deben microtest 1 kN tensile stage. The series of acquired SEM images were analyzed by means of digital image correlation (DIC) using Ncorr open-source software to map the spatial distribution of strain. These maps were correlated with finite element modeling (FEM) simulations to refine the values of elastic moduli. Moreover, the elastic moduli were derived from unloading curve nanoindentation hardness measurements carried out using a NanoScan-4D tester and interpreted using the Oliver-Pharr method. Carbonization causes a significant increase of elastic moduli from 0.86 ± 0.07 GPa to 14.12 ± 1.20 GPa for the composite with graphite and carbon black fillers. Nanoindentation measurements yield somewhat lower values, namely, 0.25 ± 0.02 GPa and 9.83 ± 1.10 GPa before and after carbonization, respectively. The analysis of fractography images suggests that crack initiation, growth and propagation may occur both at the notch stress concentrator or relatively far from the notch. Possible causes of such response are discussed, namely, (1) residual stresses introduced by processing; (2) shape and size of fillers; and (3) the emanation and accumulation of gases in composites during carbonization.
