Abstract:Objective To explore the common viral composition of acute diarrhea from Zhejiang province.Methods 811 stool specimens were collected from outpatient children(≤5 years) with acute diarrhea.They were tested by ELISA for group A rotavirus and by multiplex PCR for Group B/C rotavirus,Norovirus,Sapovirus,Adenovirus,and Astrovirus.For group A rotavirus-positive specimens,a RT-PCR was conducted to determine the G and P genotypes.Results In 811 cases,the overall proportions for rotavirus,norovirus,sapovirus,adenovirus,and astrovirus were 25.52% 、18.37% 、4.44% 、2.71% and 1.23%,respectively.Mixed infections were detected in 65(8.0%) of the 811 cases and rotavirus/norovirus dual infections took the largest percentage(56.92%).G3(37.93%),G1(32.75%) and P [8] were the most prevalent genotypes and G3/P[8](27.59%) was the predominant combination in 116 RV-positive samples.Conclusion The results indicated the prevalence of the common agents of viral diarrhea(including mono-infection and mixed infection) in Zhejiang province,which would provide valuable reference for clinical treatment and disease surveillance.
Detection and Characterization of Bacterial and Viral Acute Gastroenteritis among Outpatient Children under 5 Years Old in Guangzhou, China

Abstract:Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children can be attributed to a multitude of bacterial and viral pathogens. The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of bacterial and viral AGE in children and to compare clinical characteristics between single and multiple enteric pathogen infections. A total of 456 stool samples were collected from outpatient children under 5 years old with AGE, which were subsequently analyzed for nine bacteria and three viruses using the Luminex xTAG ® Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel. The presence of at least one pathogen was detected in 260 cases (57.0%), with Salmonella being the predominant agent, followed by norovirus, Campylobacter , and rotavirus. A total of 69 cases (15.1%) exhibited positive results for two or more enteric pathogens. Although certain co-infections demonstrated significant differences in primary clinical features compared with mono-infections, no statistical variance was observed in terms of disease severity. In outpatient children from southern China, Salmonella emerged as the most prevalent causative agent of AGE, succeeded by norovirus and Campylobacter. This study underscores the burden posed by coinfections and highlights the clinical characteristics associated with AGE when accompanied by coinfections among children under 5 years old.

Abstract:Knowledge of etiology causes of diarrheal illness is essential for development and implementation of public health measures to prevent and control this disease syndrome. There are few published studies examining diarrhea in children aged <5 years in Iraq. This study aims to investigate the occurrences and epidemiology of selected bacterial (Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp.), viral (adenovirus, norovirus GI and GII, and astrovirus), and parasitic (Entamoeba spp. and Giardia spp.) agents in stool samples from 155 child diarrheal cases enrolled between March and August 2017, in a hospital-based cross-sectional study in Thi-Qar, southeastern Iraq. Using molecular techniques and sequence-based characterization, adenovirus was the most frequently detected enteropathogen (53/155 (34.2%)), followed by Salmonella spp. (23/155 (14.8%)), Entamoeba spp. (21/155 (13.5%)), and Campylobacter spp. (17/155 (10.9%)). Mixed infection with Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. was evident, and the same was revealed between various enteric viruses, particularly adenovirus and norovirus. The most frequent co-infection pattern was between adenovirus and Campylobacter spp., in seven cases (7/155 (4.5%)). Whole-genome sequencing-derived typing data for Salmonella isolates (n = 23) revealed that sequence type 49 was the most prevalent in this sample set (15/23 (65.2%)). To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first report on detection and identification of floR, blaCARB-2, and mphA antimicrobial resistance genes in Salmonella isolated from children in the Middle East region. Logistic regression analysis pointed to few enteropathogen-specific correlations between child age, household water source, and breastfeeding patterns in relation to the outcome of detection of individual enteropathogens. This study presents the first published molecular investigation of multiple enteropathogens among children <5 years of age in Iraq. Our data provide supporting evidence for planning of childhood diarrhea management programs. It is important to build on this study and develop future longitudinal case-control research in order to elaborate the epidemiology of enteropathogens in childhood diarrhea in Iraq.

Abstract:Background Multiplex-PCR is a valuable tool for diagnosing viral acute gastroenteritis (AGE), enabling the detection of multiple pathogens. However, distinguishing between active disease and shedding poses challenges. This study aimed to evaluate viral AGE epidemiology and compare clinical characteristics among the five most common viruses. Methods Rotavirus vaccine was introduced in 2010, with 70% coverage achieved in southern Israel in two years. All rectal swabs for multiplex-PCR targeting rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, astrovirus and sapovirus from hospitalized diarrheic children <5 years were included, from December 2017 through March 2022. Detection of the same virus within two months was considered a single episode. Clinical analysis included episodes with single-virus detection and negative bacterial PCR. Results Among 5,879 rectal swabs, 2,662 (45.3%) tested positive for at least one virus, with 245 (9.2%) showing multiple virus detection. Rotavirus was the most prevalent. While rotavirus exhibited typical winter-spring seasonality in 2018-19, an unusual off-season surge was observed during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among negative bacterial PCR episodes, 34.6% had mucus stool, 5.9% had bloody stool, and 29.3% received antibiotics. Astrovirus or sapovirus infections were associated with higher rates of hospital-acquired AGE and immunodeficiency ( P <0.05), whereas rotavirus infections had higher rates of dehydration severity and acute kidney injury ( P <0.05). Discussion Enteric viruses were detected in 45.3% of rectal swabs from hospitalized children with diarrhea. Despite vaccination efforts, rotavirus remained prevalent and caused more severe disease. Continuous surveillance using multiplex-PCR is crucial for accurate management and future prevention strategies for viral AGE.

Abstract:Abstract Background The treatment of Enterobacteriaceae family including diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) has been increasingly complicated due to the emergence of resistant strains. Here we report on the phenotypic resistance profiles and ESBL genotype and virulence profiles of Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) and Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) isolated from children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Qatar (AGE). Results E. coli were isolated and characterized from 76 diarrheagenic stool positive samples, collected from hospitalized children less than 10 years old. Isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility against eighteen clinically relevant antibiotics using E-test method. Conventional PCR was performed to detect genes encoding ESBL and virulence factors. Chi-square test was performed to compare the individual antibiotic resistance between EPEC and EAEC. A significant percentage (73.7%) of isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic. Overall, high resistance (70%) was reported to the first-line antibiotics such as ampicillin, tetracycline (46.4%), and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (42.9%). Further, 39.5% of the isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR), with 22.4% being ESBL producers. On the other hand, all isolates were susceptible to carbapenem, fosfomycin, amikacin and colistin. The incidences of resistance to the 18 antibiotics between EPEC and EAEC were not significantly different by Pearson chi -square test ( P > 0.05). Genetic analysis revealed that 88.23% of ESBL production was bla CTX-M-G1 ( bla CTX-M-15 , bla CTX-M-3 ) - encoded. Several different combinations of virulence markers were observed, however, there was no specific trend among the isolates apart from absence of the bundle-forming pilus (bfpA ) gene, which encodes the type IV fimbriae in EPEC adherence factor (EAF) plasmid (pEAF), among all EPEC (atypical). 15% of the EAEC strains were positive for a combination of astA , aap & capU , while 10% were positive for three different combinations. The aap , aatA , capU and aggR virulence genes showed the highest frequency of 65, 60, 55 and 55% respectively. Others genes, east , astA , and aai , showed frequencies of 35, 30 and 20% respectively. Conclusions Atypical EPEC and EAEC were the primary etiological agents of diarrhea in children among DEC pathotypes. Our results indicated high rate of antimicrobial resistance pattern of DEC strains, which necessities the development of regulatory programs and reporting systems of antimicrobial resistance in DEC and other AGE-associated bacteria to insure effective control of diarrheal diseases. Results from this study demand a further research on identifying the phenotypic and genotypic profiles of more DEC pathotypes in various clinical samples.

Abstract:Background: Viral gastrointestinal infections remain a major public health concern in developing countries. In Burkina Faso, there are very limited updated data on the circulating viruses and their genetic diversity. Objectives: This study investigates the detection rates and characteristics of rotavirus A (RVA), norovirus (NoV), sapovirus (SaV) and human astrovirus (HAstV) in patients of all ages with acute gastrointestinal infection in urban and rural areas. Study design & methods: From 2018 to 2021, stool samples from 1,295 patients with acute gastroenteritis were collected and screened for RVA, NoV, SaV and HAstV. Genotyping and phylogenetic analyses were performed on a subset of samples. Results: At least one virus was detected in 34.1% of samples. NoV and SaV were predominant with detection rates of respectively 10.5 and 8.8%. We identified rare genotypes of NoV GII, RVA and HAstV, recombinant HAstV strains and a potential zoonotic RVA transmission event. Conclusions: We give an up-to-date epidemiological picture of enteric viruses in Burkina Faso, showing a decrease in prevalence but a high diversity of circulating strains. However, viral gastroenteritis remains a public health burden, particularly in pediatric settings. Our data advocate for the implementation of routine viral surveillance and updated management algorithms for diarrheal disease.

Abstract:Background: Various methods are used to identify the causative organisms of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children. The gastrointestinal (GI) panel has the potential to detect up to 22 pathogens rapidly through the multiplex real-time PCR test. We studied the impact of the GI panel on clinical management in the pediatric population. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to collect data on GI panel results and clinical details of inpatient children presenting with AGE at King Hamad University Hospital, Kingdom of Bahrain, over the course of one year. Results: One hundred nine samples were collected. The GI panel was positive in 96 samples (88.1%), with the majority detected in the toddler age group. Forty-one (42.7%) samples were positive for at least one organism. Salmonella was the most frequently encountered bacteria as a single isolate, 10/55 (18.2%), while enteropathogenic Escherichia coli was the most common co-infected organism, 16/41 (39%). Norovirus was the most common virus among the viruses. Bacterial detection peaked from July to October, while viral detection plateaued throughout the year. The GI panel and stool culture were positive for the same organism in 17 samples, versus one sample with a different organism. Sixty-two (56.9%) samples had a positive GI panel but negative stool cultures and stool analysis, and half of those detected viruses. The GI panel was positive in 86.2% of severely ill patients; the majority were bacteria. Bacterial detection was associated with a higher CRP compared to viruses. Conclusion: The GI panel is an informative tool for detecting the causative pathogen of AGE in children. However, it can detect multiple organisms, indicating a possible carrier status, which points toward future studies.
Investigation of gut microbiota diversity according to infectious agent in pediatric infectious acute gastroenteritis in a Korean university hospital

Abstract:Background: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. AGE can cause an imbalance in the intestinal microbiota. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of the gut microbiome in Korean children hospitalized for infectious AGE at a university hospital. Methods: A total of 23 stool samples from patients aged 5 months to 11 years with AGE were analyzed. Thirteen convalescent stool samples were collected 1 month after discharge. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the five viruses and 16 bacteria-specific AGE pathogens (PowerChek Multiplex Real time PCR Kit, Seoul, Korea), and 16s rRNA sequencing (Illumina MiSeq Sequencing system, Illumina, USA) were performed. Results: According to the results of multiplex PCR for causative pathogens, the microbiome taxonomic profile (MTP) of the gut microbiome in three groups of AGE, norovirus AGE (n = 11), Campylobacter AGE (n = 7) and Salmonella AGE (n = 5) was compared. The phylum Actinobacteria was significantly more abundant in the norovirus AGE (P = 0.011), whereas the phylum Proteobacteria was significantly more abundant in Salmonella AGE (P = 0.012). Alpha diversity, which indicates species richness and diversity, showed no statistical differences. However, beta diversity, representing the similarity in MTP between norovirus, Campylobacter, and Salmonella AGE, was significantly different (P = 0.007). In convalescence, compared with their corresponding AGE samples, the phylum Firmicutes; and the lower taxa Christensenellaceae (P = 0.0152) and Lachnospiraceae (P = 0.0327) were significantly increased. Conclusions: In pediatric AGE, the type of infectious agent can affect the diversity and dominance of gut microbiota in pediatric patients. Furthermore, healthy gut bacteria increased during the period of 1 month after infection, allowing a return to a healthy state without causing long-term dysbiosis.

Abstract:Diarrhea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide and represents a major dysbiosis event. Rotavirus has been recognized as a global leading pathogen of diarrhea. This study is aimed at investigating differences in the gut virome between diarrheal children and healthy controls. In 2018, 76 diarrheal fecal samples and 27 healthy fecal samples in Shanghai and 40 diarrheal fecal samples and 19 healthy fecal samples in Taizhou were collected to investigate the composition of the gut virome. Viral metagenomic analyses revealed that the alpha diversity of the diarrheal virome was not significantly different from that of the healthy virome, and the beta diversity had a significant difference between diarrheal and healthy children. The diarrheal virome was mainly dominated by the families Adenoviridae , Astroviridae , Caliciviridae , and Picornaviridae . Meanwhile, the healthy virome also contains phages, including Microviridae and Caudovirales . The high prevalence of diverse enteric viruses in all samples and the little abundance of Microviridae and Caudovirales in diarrheal groups were identified. The study introduced a general overview of the gut virome in diarrheal children, revealed the compositional differences in the gut viral community compared to healthy controls, and provided a reference for efficient treatments and prevention of virus-infectious diarrhea in children.

Abstract:Background: Gastroenteritis is a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Rotavirus, human caliciviruses (HucV), adenovirus, and astrovirus are recognized as common etiologies of acute gastroenteritis.Objectives: To use antigen detection and molecular methods to determine the viral etiology of childhood diarrhea in Lanzhou, China, 2005-2007.Study design: 544 stool specimens were collected from children hospitalized with diarrhea. ELISA, RT-PCR, or PCR were used to detect viruses commonly causing diarrhea.Results: Group A rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus, were detected in 54.0%, 9.2%, 1.1%, 3.3%, and 4.4%, respectively. No group B or group C rotaviruses were detected. The relative contribution of these viruses changed greatly over 2 years. The percentage of rotavirus and adenovirus dropped from 61.2% and 5.4% to 47.6% and 1.4%, whereas HucV increased from 5.0% to 15.0%. G1 and P[8] were the predominant rotavirus strains, and P[6] was detected for the first time in this area. The predominant norovirus strain changed from GII3 to GII4, and the subtypes of GII4 changed from the Hunter strain to the variant 2006b strain.Conclusions: The distribution of viruses and genotypes of individual viruses causing gastroenteritis in Lanzhou, China changed greatly during 2005-2007. Influence of Micro Threads Alteration on Osseointegration and Primary Stability of Implants: An FEA and In Vivo Analysis in Rabbits.

Abstract:PURPOSE To describe the early bone tissue response to implants with and without micro threads designed to the full length of an oxidized titanium implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS A pair of two-dimensional finite element models was designed using a computer aided three-dimensional interactive application files of an implant model with micro threads in between macro threads and one without micro threads. Oxidized titanium implants with (test implants n=20) and without (control implants n=20) micro thread were prepared. A total of 12 rabbits were used and each received four implants. Insertion torque while implant placement and removal torque analysis after 4 weeks was performed in nine rabbits, and histomorphometric analysis in three rabbits, respectively. RESULTS Finite element analysis showed less stress accumulation in test implant models with 31Mpa when compared with 62.2 Mpa in control implant model. Insertion and removal torque analysis did not show any statistical significance between the two implant designs. At 4 weeks, there was a significant difference between the two groups in the percentage of new bone volume and bone-to-implant contact in the femur (p< .05); however, not in the tibia. CONCLUSIONS The effect of micro threads was prominent in the femur suggesting that micro threads promote bone formation. The stress distribution supported by the micro threads was especially effective in the cancellous bone.

Abstract:Diarrheal disease is a major public health problem for children in developing countries. Knowledge of etiology that causes diarrheal illness is essential to implement public health measures to prevent and control this disease. Published studies regarding the situation of childhood diarrhea in Sudan is scanty. This study aims to investigate viral and bacterial etiology and related clinical and epidemiological factors in children with acute diarrhea in Khartoum State, Sudan. A total of 437 fecal samples were collected from hospitalized children <5 years old with acute diarrhea, viral and bacterial pathogens were investigated by using two-tube multiplex RT-PCR. The genotypes of adenovirus and bocavirus were determined by sequencing. Viral diarrhea was identified in 79 cases (62 single and 17 co-infections) (18%), and bacterial diarrhea in 49 cases (37 single and 12 co-infections) (11.2%). Mixed infections in both groups totaled 19 samples (4.3%) with more than one pathogen, they were viral co-infections (n = 7, 36.8%) bacterial co-infections (n = 2, 10.5%) and viral bacterial co-infection (n = 10, 52.6%). Rotavirus (10.2%) was predominantly detected, followed by norovirus G2 (4.0%), adenovirus (1.6%), bocavirus (1%), and norovirus G1 (0.9%). Infection with astrovirus was not detected in this study. The Shigella -Enteroinvasive E.coli (EIEC) (8.9%) was the predominantly found bacterial pathogen, followed by Vibrio parahaemolyticus (0.9%), enterohaemorrhagic E.coli (EHEC) -Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) (0.6%) and Salmonella enteritidis (0.6%). V. cholerae, Yersinia enterocolitica and Campylobacter jejuni were not detected in this study. The phylogenetic tree identified adenovirus belonged to genotype 41 and bocavirus belonged to two different clades within human bocavirus 1. Our findings represent the first report that adenovirus 41 is a cause of diarrhea in Sudan and that human bocavirus 1 is the principal bocavirus strain circulating in Sudan. In conclusion, this is the first comprehensive report to elaborate the pathogen spectrum associated with childhood diarrhea in Khartoum State, Sudan. The results obtained in the present study highlighted the current epidemic situation, the diverse pathogens related to childhood diarrhea, and the importance and the urgency of taking appropriate intervention measures in Khartoum State, Sudan.

Seasonal Prevalence and Detection of Enteric and Respiratory Viruses in Wastewater and Hospitalized Children with Acute Gastroenteritis

Abstract:Human enteric and some respiratory viruses are identified to be involved with acute gastroenteritis that can be shed in feces of infected persons into the environment. Understanding the abundance of these viruses in wastewater is significant when assessing the public health impacts associated with discharge of wastewater into the environment. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and seasonal variation of human enteric adenovirus (HAdV), Aichi virus (AiV-1), bocavirus (HBoV), and respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater as well as their prevalence among hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis. The viruses were detected and quantified with real-time PCR. HAdV was the most detected virus in raw sewage (88.5%), treated sewage (28%), and stool gastroenteritis (74%), followed by HBoV (45.8% for raw sewage, 14.6% for treated sewage, and 55.3% for stool samples). The detection rate of AiV-1 was 59.4%, 19.8%, and 62.6% in raw sewage, treated sewage, and stool samples, respectively. The rate of SARS-CoV-2 detection in raw sewage, treated sewage, and stool samples was 33.3%, 7.3%, and 20.6%, respectively. The viral concentrations ranged between 4.50 × 10 1 and 8.75 × 10 7 GC/ml in raw sewage samples, 1.20 × 10 1 and 5.43 × 10 6 GC/ml in treated sewage samples, and 4.80 × 10 1 and 9.88 × 10 8 GC/gram in stool samples. The overall log means of virus reduction during the wastewater treatment process ranged from 1.68 log 10 (HAdV) to 3.31 log 10 (AiV-1). The peak prevalence of the four viruses in raw sewage samples occurred during the winter season. This study showed the high detection rates of the four targeted viruses in wastewater and demonstrated that virological surveillance of wastewater in local wastewater treatment plants is a suitable model for epidemiological monitoring of diarrheal and respiratory diseases in middle- and low-resource countries.

Abstract:Enteric viruses are the leading cause of diarrhea in children globally. Identifying viral agents and understanding their genetic diversity could help to develop effective preventive measures. This study aimed to determine the detection rate and genetic diversity of four enteric viruses in Gabonese children aged below five years. Stool samples from children <5 years with (n = 177) and without (n = 67) diarrhea were collected from April 2018 to November 2019. Norovirus, astrovirus, sapovirus, and aichivirus A were identified using PCR techniques followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. At least one viral agent was identified in 23.2% and 14.9% of the symptomatic and asymptomatic participants, respectively. Norovirus (14.7%) and astrovirus (7.3%) were the most prevalent in children with diarrhea, whereas in the healthy group norovirus (9%) followed by the first reported aichivirus A in Gabon (6%) were predominant. The predominant norovirus genogroup was GII, consisting mostly of genotype GII.P31-GII.4 Sydney. Phylogenetic analysis of the 3CD region of the aichivirus A genome revealed the presence of two genotypes (A and C) in the study cohort. Astrovirus and sapovirus showed a high diversity, with five different astrovirus genotypes and four sapovirus genotypes, respectively. Our findings give new insights into the circulation and genetic diversity of enteric viruses in Gabonese children.
Metagenomics characterization of respiratory viral RNA pathogens in children under five years with severe acute respiratory infection in the Free State, South Africa

Abstract:Prompt detection of viral respiratory pathogens is crucial in managing respiratory infection including severe acute respiratory infection (SARI). Metagenomics next‐generation sequencing (mNGS) and bioinformatics analyses remain reliable strategies for diagnostic and surveillance purposes. This study evaluated the diagnostic utility of mNGS using multiple analysis tools compared with multiplex real‐time PCR for the detection of viral respiratory pathogens in children under 5 years with SARI. Nasopharyngeal swabs collected in viral transport media from 84 children admitted with SARI as per the World Health Organization definition between December 2020 and August 2021 in the Free State Province, South Africa, were used in this study. The obtained specimens were subjected to mNGS using the Illumina MiSeq system, and bioinformatics analysis was performed using three web‐based analysis tools; Genome Detective, One Codex and Twist Respiratory Viral Research Panel. With average reads of 211323, mNGS detected viral pathogens in 82 (97.6%) of the 84 patients. Viral aetiologies were established in nine previously undetected/missed cases with an additional bacterial aetiology (Neisseria meningitidis) detected in one patient. Furthermore, mNGS enabled the much needed viral genotypic and subtype differentiation and provided significant information on bacterial co‐infection despite enrichment for RNA viruses. Sequences of nonhuman viruses, bacteriophages, and endogenous retrovirus K113 (constituting the respiratory virome) were also uncovered. Notably, mNGS had lower detectability rate for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (missing 18/32 cases). This study suggests that mNGS, combined with multiple/improved bioinformatics tools, is practically feasible for increased viral and bacterial pathogen detection in SARI, especially in cases where no aetiological agent could be identified by available traditional methods.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study molecular epidemiology of four major etiological viruses among children with acute diarrhea in Lanzhou, Gansu province.METHODS:Stool specimens were collected from all 400 inpatients less than 5 years old with acute diarrhea admitted in Department of Pediatrics, the First Hospital, Lanzhou University from Jul. 2004 through Jun. 2005. Dako IDEIA kits were used for detection of rotavirus, adenovirus and astrovirus. Calicivirus detection was done by both reverse transcription-polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) and ELISA. Further strain characterization of rotavirus and astrovirus was carried out with RT-PCR.RESULTS:A total of 400 stool samples were collected and tested. Rotavirus was present in 47.3% of the cases: calicivirus in 15.5%, astrovirus in 9.5% and adenoviruses in 7.5%. Mixed infections with multiple enteric viruses were present in 13.5% of all samples. Among 189 rotavirus positive samples, serotype G2 (34.4%) was the predominant strain followed by G3 (32.8%), G1 (1.1%) and mixed-G infection (5.8%). 25.9% of strains remained to be non-typeable. P genotyping showed P [4] (45%) was most common followed by P [8] (22.1%), and non-typeable (32.9%). Strain P [4] G2 (43.6%) was the most common combination followed by P [8] G3 (25.6%), P [4] G3 (13.8%), and P [8] G2, P [4] G1 and P [8] G1. Among 38 astrovirus strains, serotypes 1 (57.8%) was the predominant. Serotype 3 and 8 were found only in one case respectively, 14 strains remained to be non-typeable. A peak admission of rotavirus diarrhea was observed from October through December. More than 95.0% of viral diarrhea patients under hospitalization occurred among children younger than 2 years. The incidence rates of rotavirus were highest in infants aged 6 - 23 months.CONCLUSION:Rotavirus was the most important pathogen for viral diarrhea among children hospitalized in Lanzhou followed by calicivirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus. The predominant rotavirus strain circulated was P [4] G2, which was different from the finding in the previous years. The high rate of mixed infection with different viral agents was notable.
