Abstract:Objective To explore the molecular epidemiological characteristics of norovirus isolated from the patients with acute gastroenteritis in Zhejiang province during 2016.Methods The stool samples and clinical data of 1 308 patients with acute gastroenteritis were collected from January to December in 2016.The type Ⅰ and Ⅱ of norovirus in stool samples were detected by one-step double real-time RT-PCR.Some of the positive specimens were selected by stratified sampling and amplified by conventional RT-PCR,and the PCR products were sequenced for genotype identification and phylogenetic analysis.Results Among the samples studied the positive rate of norovirus was 10.55％ (138/1 308) in which 12 cases were GⅠ genotype,118 cases were G Ⅱ genotype and 8 cases were mixed infection of G Ⅰ/G Ⅱ genotypes.The positive rate of norovirus in different age groups decreased with the increased age of patients,and became the lowest in the patient group of more than or equal to 60 years old.There was no significant difference for the positive rates of norovirus in different genders.Norovirus infection was distributed throughout all the year with the peak value of positive rate (37.50％) in December.The sequence analysis demonstrated that G Ⅱ.4 and G Ⅱ.17 genotypes were the prevalent strains of G Ⅱ genotypes with proportions of 40.91％ (18/44) and 34.09％ (15/44),while GⅠ.6 genotype was the prevalent strain of GⅠ genotypes.Conclusion Norovirus should be the important pathogen causing acute gastroenteritis in Zhejiang province during 2016.G Ⅱ.4 and G Ⅱ.17 of norovirus may be the predominant epidemic genotypes.

Abstract:Abstract Background Norovirus (NoV) is a major cause of viral acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children worldwide. Epidemiological analysis with respect to the virus strains is limited in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, patterns, and molecular characteristics of NoV infection among children with AGE in China. Methods A total 4848 stool samples were collected from children who were admitted with AGE in Tianjin Children’s Hospital from August 2018 to July 2020. NoV was preliminarily detected using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Partial sequences of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and capsid genes of positive samples were amplified by conventional RT-PCR and then sequenced. The NoV genotype was determined by online Norovirus Typing Tool Version 2.0, and phylogenetic analysis was conducted using MEGA 6.0. Results The prevalence of NoV was 26.4% (1280/4848). NoV was detected in all age groups, with the 7–12 months group having the highest detection rate (655/2014, 32.5%). NoV was detected during most part of the year with higher frequency in winter than other seasons. Based on the genetic analysis of RdRp, GII. Pe was the most predominant genotype detected at 70.7% (381/539) followed by GII.P12 at 25.4% (137/539). GII.4 was the most predominant capsid genotype detected at 65.3% (338/518) followed by GII.3 at 26.8% (139/518). Based on the genetic analysis of RdRp and capsid sequences, the strains were clustered into 10 RdRp–capsid genotypes: GII.Pe-GII.4 Sydney 2012 (65.5%), GII.P12-GII.3 (27.2%), GII.P16-GII.2 (1.8%), GII.P12-GII.2 (0.2%), GII.P17-GII.17 (1.1%), GII.Pe-GII.3 (1.8%), GII.Pe-GII.2 (1.1%), GII.Pe-GII.1 (0.4%), GII.16-GII.4 Sydney 2012 (0.7%), and GII.P7-GII.6 (0.2%). The predominant NoV genotypes changed from GII.Pe-GII.4 Sydney 2012 and GII.P12-GII.3 between August 2018 and July 2019 to GII.Pe-GII.4 Sydney 2012 and GII.P16-GII.2 between August 2019 and July 2020. The patients with GII.Pe-GII.4 Sydney 2012 genotype were more likely to suffer from vomiting symptom than those with GII.P12-GII.3. Conclusions NoV is an important pathogen responsible for viral AGE among children in China. GII.Pe-GII.4 Sydney 2012 and GII.P12-GII.3 were major recombinant genotypes. Knowledge of circulating genotypes and seasonal trends is of great importance for disease prevention and surveillance.

Abstract:A rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive electroprecipitin (EP) test for detecting hepatitis-associated antigen (HAA) in sera of patients who have hepatitis has been developed. The method is based on a dual electrophoresis in which soluble antigen overtakes and migrates through an antiserum which moves more slowly under electric current. A positive test is indicated by a sharp U- or V-shaped arc at the point where the more rapidly moving antigen migrates through the gamma-globulin. The test has been evaluated and standarized with three pairs of reference sera confirmed to contain HAA or anti-HAA. Also, the EP test has been compared with the agar-gel double-diffusion (AGDD) technic and the complement-fixation (CE) test for detecting HAA in 100 sera from hepatitis patients. The EP test requires only 0.005 ml. of a standard antiserum to detect antigen in the same volume of the patient’s serum. The total procedure, which requires 1½ hr. to complete is more sensitive than the AGDD. Once the EP test is standardized, it can easily be adapted for testing blood donor sera for the hepatitis-associated antigen by most conventional laboratories.
Prevalence and Genetic Diversity of Norovirus in Outpatient Children with Acute Diarrhea in Shanghai, China

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of norovirus (Nov) associated-diarrhea among pediatric outpatients in Shanghai, and characterize the genotypes of circulating NoV strain. Stool samples were collected from 910 children with non-dysenteric diarrhea between August 2008 and July 2009. One-step real-time RT-PCR was used to screen for NoV genogroup I (GI) and genogroup II (GII). Genotypes were classified by sequence analysis of partial capsid and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) fragments. NoV was detected year round with high activity in July, August, September, and October. Of 910 specimens, 165 (18.13%) were positive for NoV; 4 (2.42%) were GI, and 161 (97.58%) were GII. Based on capsid sequences, 8 different genotypes were identified for 114 NoV strains, including GII.4 2006b (57.89%), GII.3 (30.70%), GII.6 (4.39%), GII.12 (3.51%), GII.14, GII.2, GI.4, and GI.5 (0.88% each). Based on the RdRp sequences of 86 NoV strains, NoV was genotyped as GII.4 (62.79%), GII.12 (30.23%), GII.g (2.33%), GII.2 (1.16%), GII.6 (1.16%), GII.7 (1.16%), and GI.4 (1.16%). The RdRp genotypes of 30 strains were inconsistent with the capsid genotypes, indicating potential NoV recombinants.

Abstract:The present study has determined the detection rate of norovirus (NoV) with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in hospitalized children and describes the molecular epidemiology of NoV circulating in Seoul, Korea. Six hundred and eighty-three (9.8%) of samples were positive for NoV. Of these, the NoV GII genogroup was the most commonly found, with a prevalence of 96.2% (683 of 710). Only 27 samples were positive for the NoV GI genogroup. Ten kinds of GI genotype (GI/1, GI/2, GI/3, GI/4, GI/5, GI/6, GI/7, GI/9, GI/12, and GI/13) and eight kinds of GII genotype (GII/2, GII/3, GII/4, GII/8, GII/14, GII/15, GII/16, and GII/17) were identified in children with AGE during the years 2008-2011.

Abstract:Norovirus (NoV) is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide. Globally, the GII.4 Sydney 2012 strain has predominated since 2012, although GII.4 variant strains have caused AGE outbreaks in China. Recent patterns of NoV genotype distributions in 6011 children with AGE in Tianjin, China were investigated. NoV was detected using real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of partial sequences of the viral capsid gene. NoV genotypes were determined, and phylogenetic analysis was conducted. Epidemiological and clinical data were compared between children infected with different NoV genotypes. NoV was detected in 27.6% of the specimens tested. GII.4 strains comprised 49.4% infections, followed by GII.3 at 39.9%. Genotypes GII.2, GII.13, GII.17, GII.1, GII.6, and GII.14 were also detected. NoV was detected during most of the year, with a peak season of cases in the winter. Diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration were present in patients with NoV infection. The main genotypes were GII.4 and GII.3, with a slight increase in GII.2, beginning in March 2017. Among the GII.4 strains, GII.4 Sydney 2012 was the only epidemic strain in Tianjin. Patients with GII.4 genotypes were more likely to present with diarrhea and vomiting than those with GII.3. Children with GII. Others were prone to suffered from dehydration and abdominal pain than those with GII.3. NoV GII has become the main cause of viral AGE in Tianjin, China. The predominant genotypes of NoV were GII.4 and GII.3. Identification of emerging genotypes is crucial for the prevention and control of NoV-caused AGE.
Genetic characterization and evolutionary analysis of norovirus genotypes circulating among children in eastern India during 2018-2019

Abstract:Noroviruses are significant etiological agents of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) across all age groups, especially in children under 5 years of age. Although the prevalence of norovirus infection is known to have increased in various countries, in India there are few reports pertaining to the norovirus disease burden. We investigated the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of noroviruses in children seeking health care at two hospitals in Kolkata, Eastern India. Faecal specimens were collected between January 2018 and December 2019 from 2812 children under 5 years of age with acute gastroenteritis. Noroviruses were detected in 6.04% (170/2812) of the samples, and 12.9% (22/170) of these were cases of coinfection with rotavirus. Among children (≤5 years), a higher infection rate (8.2%, n = 94/1152) was observed in the 6 to 12 month age group. GII.4 Sydney 2012 was the dominant norovirus capsid genotype (n = 75/90, 83.3%), followed by GII.3 (n = 10/90, 11.1%). Other capsid types GII.13 (n = 4/90, 4.4%) and GII.17 (n = 1/90; 1.1%) were also detected at low frequency. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the GII.P16 polymerase of strains in this region clustered with those of the phylogenetically distinct monophyletic clade of GII.P16 strains, whose members have been circulating worldwide since 2014. Inter-genotypic norovirus recombinants such as GII.P16-GII.3 (n = 10) and GII.P16-GII.13 (n = 4) were also observed among the circulating strains. In comparison to previous studies from eastern India, the present study shows a higher detection rate of norovirus infection in the paediatric population suffering from acute gastroenteritis. Continuous surveillance is required for predicting the emergence of novel genotypes and recombinant strains and for future vaccine development.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the epidemiology characteristics of norovirus among diarrheal outpatients in China.METHODS:Diarrhea cases were monitored at emergency/outpatient departments at 173 hospitals in 27 provinces of China, with clinical and epidemiological data, and fecal specimens collected and sent to 58 network-laboratories to detect norovirus by RT-PCR method, and to analyze the positive rate of norovirus in various regions, population and time during 2009-2013.RESULTS:11.6% of the 34 031 diarrheal cases under surveillance were found with norovirus. Age group of 6-23 month-old children and that of people over 45 years old were found with the highest positive percentage, 13.7% and 12.4% respectively. Positive percentage of norovirus peaks in autumn and winter in a year; it peaks in mid-temperate zones (10.7%) and warm-temperate zones (11.6%) in winter. It peaks in sub-tropical zones in autumn (14.3%). The most prevalent genogroups detected were norovirus G II, accounting for 89.9% of identified strains.CONCLUSION:Norovirus affects all ages and was most prevalent in children and the elderly among diarrhea outpatients. Norovirus' positive percentage showed strong seasonal pattern, and peaks at different times of a year in different climate zones of China. Since no effective preventive measures existed, further study on norovirus epidemiology and intervention strategies should be conducted in future.

Abstract:In the post rotavirus vaccine era, norovirus (NoV) plays an increasingly important role in epidemic and sporadic gastroenteritis among children. This study was designed to provide an updated meta‐analytic review of the prevalence of NoV among paediatric patients with gastroenteritis and to clarify the relationship between NoV infection and gastroenteritis. Systematic searches of the literature for potentially relevant studies were carried out from 1 January 2015 to 29 May 2020. The inverse variance method was chosen for weighting of the studies, and the random‐effects model was used to analyse data. To determine the association between NoV infection and gastroenteritis in children, pooled odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed for case–control studies. The pooled prevalence of NoV infection among 12,0531 children with gastroenteritis from 45 countries across the world was 17.7% (95% CI: 16.3%–19.2%). There were 28 studies with a case–control design, and the pooled prevalence of NoV infection among 11,954 control subjects was 6.7% (95% CI: 5.1%–8.8%). The pooled OR of the association of NoV infection and gastroenteritis was 2.7 (95% CI: 2.2–3.4). The most common NoV genotypes were GII.4 (59.3%) and GII.3 (14.9%). The highest frequency of NoV was found in the age group below 1 year. Our findings indicated a substantial burden of gastroenteritis caused by NoV globally, with GII.4 and GII.3 the major genotypes responsible for the majority of NoV‐associated gastroenteritis cases among children. Younger age and male sex can be considered risk factors for NoV‐associated gastroenteritis among children.

Abstract:Norovirus (NoV) is an important cause of viral acute gastroenteritis (AGE). To gain insights into the epidemiological characteristics and genetic diversity of NoV among children in Hubei, 1216 stool samples from children (≤ 5 years) obtained under AGE surveillance from January 2017 to December 2019 were analyzed. The results showed that NoV was responsible for 14.64% of AGE cases, with the highest detection rate in children aged 7-12 months (19.76%). Statistically significant differences were found between male and female infection rates (χ2 = 8.108, P = 0.004). Genetic analysis of RdRp and VP1 sequences showed that NoV GII genotypes were GII.4 Sydney [P31] (34.35%), GII.3 [P12] (25.95%), GII.2 [P16] (22.90%), GII.4 Sydney [P16] (12.98%), GII.17 [P17] (2.29%), GII.6 [P7] and GII.3 [P16] (each at 0.76%). GII.17 [P17] variants were divided into the Kawasaki323-like lineage and the Kawasaki308-like lineage. A unique recombination event was detected between strains of GII.4 Sydney 2012 and GII.4 Sydney 2016. Significantly, all GII.P16 sequences associated with GII.4/GII.2 obtained in Hubei were correlated with novel GII.2 [P16] variants that re-emerged in Germany in 2016. Antigenic site analysis of complete VP1 sequences from all GII.4 variants from Hubei identified notable variable residues of antibody epitopes. Genotyping under continuous AGE surveillance and observation of the antigenic sites of VP1 are important monitoring strategies for emerging NoV strains.

Abstract:Abstract Background Human noroviruses are the leading cause of sporadic cases and outbreaks of viral acute gastroenteritis in all age groups worldwide. Methods Epidemiological data and fecal specimens were collected between January 2011 and December 2018 from 4911 children < 5 years of age with diarrhea in three districts of Beijing. From 2011 to 2013, One-Step Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect noroviruses, and from January 2014 to December 2018, norovirus GI and GII were screened using duplex quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). One-Step RT-PCR and RT-seminested PCR were performed to amplify the RNA-dependent polymerase and capsid genes of noroviruses in positive sample. Amplified products were sequenced directly; norovirus was typed using the online Norovirus Genotyping Tool v2.0 and phylogenetic analyses were conducted using MEGA-X. Results From 2011 to 2018, noroviruses were detected in 16.5% of specimens from children with diarrhea. The highest prevalence was observed in children aged 12 to 23 months (22.4%, 319/1421), followed by children aged 6 to 11 months (17.6%, 253/1441). The highest prevalence of norovirus infections occurred in autumn followed by winter, spring, and summer. From 2011 to 2018, the most prevalent dual types (genotype and polymerase type) were GII.4 Sydney[P31] (51.6%, 239/463), followed by GII.3[P12] (24.0%, 111/463), GII.4 2006b[P4 2006b] (7.3%, 34/463), GII.2[P16] (5.0%, 23/463), GII.17[P17] (2.6%, 12/463) and GII.6[P7] (2.6%, 12/463). GII.4 2006b[P4 2006b] predominated in 2011 and 2012. GII.4 Sydney[P31] predominated from 2013 to 2018. In total, 15 genotypes, 15 P-types and 19 dual types were detected in this study, reflecting the genetic diversity. Conclusions There were significant epidemiological characteristics and genetic diversity among outpatient children with norovirus infections < 5 years of age in Beijing from 2011 to 2018. These characteristics differ from those of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing. The complete genome sequences of each genotype are needed to better understand norovirus evolutionary mechanisms.

Abstract:Noroviruses (NoVs) are a global concern, causing widespread outbreaks and sporadic acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases across all age groups. Recent research has shed light on the emergence of novel recombinant strains of NoV in various countries. To delve deeper into this phenomenon, we extensively analyzed 1,175 stool samples collected from Japanese infants and children with AGE from six different prefectures in Japan over three years, from July 2018 to June 2021. Our investigation aimed to determine the prevalence and genetic characteristics of NoV associated with sporadic AGE while exploring the possibility of detecting NoV recombination events. Among the analyzed samples, we identified 355 cases positive for NoV, 11 cases attributed to GI genotypes, and 344 associated with GII genotypes. Notably, we discovered four distinct GI genotypes (GI.2, GI.3, GI.4, and GI.6) and seven diverse GII genotypes (GII.2, GII.3, GII.4, GII.6, GII.7, GII.14, and GII.17). The predominant genotypes were GII.4 (56.4%; 194 out of 344), followed by GII.2 and GII.3. Through dual genotyping based on sequencing of the ORF1/ORF2 junction region, we identified a total of 14 different RdRp/capsid genotypes. Of particular interest were the prevalent recombinant genotypes GII.4[P31] and GII.2[P16]. Notably, our study revealed a decrease in the number of children infected with NoV during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings underscore the importance of continuous NoV surveillance efforts.

Abstract:Noroviruses are recognized as a leading cause of outbreaks and sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) among individuals of all ages worldwide, especially in children <5 years old. We investigated the epidemiology of noroviruses among hospitalized children at two hospitals in East Java, Indonesia. Stool samples were collected from 966 children with AGE during September 2015–July 2019. The genotypes were determined by phylogenetic analyses. In 2015–2019, noroviruses were detected in 12.3% (119/966) of the samples. Children <2 years old showed a significantly higher prevalence than those ≥2 years old (P = 0.01). NoV infections were observed throughout the year, with the highest prevalence in December. Based on our genetic analyses of RdRp, GII.[P31] (43.7%, 31/71) was the most prevalent RdRp genotype, followed by GII.[P16] (36.6%, 26/71). GII.[P31] was a dominant genotype in 2016 and 2018, whereas GII.[P16] was a dominant genotype in 2015 and 2017. Among the capsid genotypes, the most predominant norovirus genotype from 2015 to 2018 was GII.4 Sydney_2012 (33.6%, 40/119). The most prevalent genotype in each year was GII.13 in 2015, GII.4 Sydney_2012 in 2016 and 2018, and GII.3 in 2017. Based on the genetic analyses of RdRp and capsid sequences, the strains were clustered into 13 RdRp/capsid genotypes; 12 of them were discordant, e.g., GII.4 Sydney[P31], GII.3[P16], and GII.13[P16]. The predominant genotype in each year was GII.13[P16] in 2015, GII.4 Sydney[P31] in 2016, GII.3[P16] in 2017, and GII.4 Sydney[P31] in 2018. Our results demonstrate high detection rates and genetic diversity of norovirus GII genotypes in pediatric AGE samples from Indonesia. These findings strengthen the importance of the continuous molecular surveillance of emerging norovirus strains.

Abstract:A large number of N-cyano amidine derivatives were prepared as potential histamine H2 receptor antagonists and evaluated for their inhibitory action on histamine-stimulated chronotropic response of isolated right atria from guinea pigs. Several selected compounds were assessed as inhibitors of gastric acid secretion induced by histamine in anesthetized dogs. Of these compounds, furan (8c) and [(diaminomethylene)amino]thiazole derivatives (16c) were found to be more potent than cimetidine in both assays. In contrast to the guanidine series, methyl substitution at the terminal nitrogen of the cyano amidines was detrimental to the activities. Furthermore, acid hydrolysis of the cyano amidines gave carbamoyl amidines, which proved to be more active than the cyano amidines, the converse of the case for guanidines. 3-[[[2-[(Diaminomethylene)amino]-4- thiazolyl]methyl]thio]-N'-carbamoylpropionamidine (16d) was the most potent of all the compounds tested and was approximately 30 times more active in vitro and 50 times more active in vivo than cimetidine.
Norovirus strains among children aged 0-18 years hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Estonia 2015-2016

Abstract:Norovirus (NoV) is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in many countries that have introduced universal rotavirus mass vaccination. This is the first study to report data on NoV strains in Estonia. We recruited 2249 children aged 0-18 years hospitalized for AGE in Estonian hospitals from February 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016. Norovirus gastroenteritis (NoVGE) was diagnosed in 14.5% (n = 325) cases. Stool sample for RNA extraction and genotyping was available in 86% (n = 280) of NoVGE cases (2015, n = 91; 2016, n = 189). Dominant capsid types detected in 75% (n = 210) samples were, GII.4 (63.8%, n = 134), GII.3 (15.2%, n = 32), GII.17 (6.7%, n = 14), and GII.6 (5.2%, n = 11). Prevailing RNA polymerase types found in 77% (n = 215) samples were GII.P31 (51.1%, n = 110), GII.P21 (17.7%, n = 38), GII.P4 (11.2%, n = 24), and GII.P7 (6.5%, n = 14). Both regions were typeable for 67% (n = 189) of samples. Most prevalent strains were GII.4Sydney_2012[P31] (48.7%, n = 92), GII.3[P21] (15.3%, n = 29), GII.4Sydney_2012[P4] (5.8%, n = 11) and GII.17[P17] (5.8%, n = 11). Simpson's diversity index showed a significant difference between the age groups 1-4 and 5-9 years: D 0.64 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.55-0.73) versus 0.83 (95% CI: 0.81-0.86), respectively (p = 0.03). An accurate understanding of NoV strain diversity is important for control and preventive measures, especially in the postrotavirus vaccine era.

Abstract:Background: Noroviruses (NoVs) are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE), worldwide. Objectives: To evaluate the frequency, viral load and molecular profile of NoV in fecal and nasopharyngeal swab samples from hospitalized children, and to determine children's secretor status. Study design: From May 2014 to May 2015, 219 children were included in the study, 96 with gastroenteric symptoms and 123 without gastroenteric symptoms. All fecal and nasopharyngeal swab samples were screened by TaqMan RT-qPCR duplex (GI/GII NoV) and quality samples were characterized by genomic sequencing. Results: Norovirus positivity rate in feces was 15.4% in asymptomatic and 18.8% in the symptomatic group. The median viral loads in feces were 2.69×108GC/g and 4.32×107GC/g from children with or without AGE symptoms, respectively. In nasopharyngeal swab samples, the NoV positivity was 11.4% in symptomatic children, with a median viral load of 2.20×107GC/mL and 6.5% in asymptomatic children, with an average viral load of 1.73×106GC/mL. In only two cases NoV was detected in both samples. A considerable genomic variability was observed in feces, with six genotypes being detected, as follows: GII.4, GII.6, GI.3 and GII.3, GI.2 and GI.5. Two GI.3 was detected in nasopharyngeal swab. Conclusions: Our data reveal considerable NoV frequencies in both nasopharyngeal and fecal samples from symptomatic and asymptomatic children. Higher viral loads were detected in samples from AGE symptomatic children, when compared to asymptomatic children. High genomic variability was observed, with this being the first report of GI.5 NoV in Brazil and of GI.3 in nasopharyngeal swab samples.
Norovirus Activity and Genotypes in Sporadic Acute Diarrhea in Children in Shanghai During 2014-2018

Abstract:Background: Based on the impact public health of norovirus and the current progress in norovirus vaccine development, it is necessary to continuously monitor the epidemiology of norovirus infection, especially in children who are more susceptible to norovirus. Objectives: To monitor the activity and genotypes of norovirus infection in sporadic diarrhea in Shanghainese children during 2014-2018. Study design: Acute diarrheal cases were prospectively enrolled in the outpatient setting. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used for screening norovirus GI and GII genogroups. Dual norovirus genotypes were identified based on the partial capsid and polymerase gene sequences. Results: Of the 3422 children with diarrhea, 510 (14.9%) were positive for noroviruses with 13 (2.5%) strains being GI genogroup and 497 (97.5%) strains being GII genogroup. Five distinct capsid GII genotypes were identified, including GII.4-Sydney/2012 (71.8%), GII.3 (13.8%), GII.17 (7.8%), GII.2 (6.0%), GII.6 (0.3%) and GII.8 (0.3%). Seven polymerase GII genotypes were identified, including GII.Pe (77.0%), GII.P12 (11.0%), GII.P17 (9.0%), GII.P16 (2.1%), and GII.P7, GII.P8 and GII.P2 in each (0.3%). Eleven distinct polymerase/capsid genotypes were identified with GII.Pe/GII.4-Sydney/2012 (74.2%), GII.P12/GII.3 (11.7%) and GII.P17/GII.17 (7.7%) being common. GII.P17/GII.17 strains were detected since September 2014. Recombinant GII.P16/GII.2 strains were detected since December 2016. Conclusions: Norovirus is a major pathogen causing diarrhea in Shanghainese children. GII.Pe/GII.4-Sydney/2012 strains remained the predominant genotype. The emergence of GII.P17/GII.17 and GII.P16/GII.2 strains in sporadic diarrhea was consistent with norovirus-associated outbreaks attributable to these 2 novel variants in China. Continuous monitoring norovirus genotypes circulating in pediatric population is needed for current vaccine development.

Abstract:We argue that string theory has ingredients to provide us with candidates for cold dark matter and explain the current acceleration of our universe. In any generic string compactification the dilaton plays an important role, as it couples to the standard model and other heavy nonrelativistic degrees of freedom such as string winding modes and wrapped branes, which we collectively call stringy cold dark matter. These couplings are nonuniversal, which results in an interesting dynamics for a rolling dilaton. Initially, it can track radiation and matter while beginning to dominate the dynamics recently, triggering a phase of acceleration. This scenario can be realized as long as the dilaton also couples strongly to some heavy modes. We furnish examples of such modes. We provide analytical and numerical results and compare them with the current supernovae result. We also mention some of the challenges for the success of our model favoring certain stringy candidates.

Abstract:Noroviruses are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) among adults and children worldwide. NoroSurv is a global network for norovirus strain surveillance among children <5 years of age with AGE. Participants in 16 countries across 6 continents used standardized protocols for dual typing (genotype and polymerase type) and uploaded 1,325 dual-typed sequences to the NoroSurv web portal during 2016-2020. More than 50% of submitted sequences were GII.4 Sydney[P16] or GII.4 Sydney[P31] strains. Other common strains included GII.2[P16], GII.3[P12], GII.6[P7], and GI.3[P3] viruses. In total, 22 genotypes and 36 dual types, including GII.3 and GII.20 viruses with rarely reported polymerase types, were detected, reflecting high strain diversity. Surveillance data captured in NoroSurv enables the monitoring of trends in norovirus strains associated childhood AGE throughout the world on a near real-time basis.
