Abstract:Discerning mechanisms of sulfate formation during fine-particle pollution (referred to as haze hereafter) in Beijing is important for understanding the rapid evolution of haze and for developing cost-effective air pollution mitigation strategies. Here we present observations of the oxygen-17 excess of PM2.5 sulfate (Δ17O(SO42−)) collected in Beijing haze from October 2014 to January 2015 to constrain possible sulfate formation pathways. Throughout the sampling campaign, the 12-hourly averaged PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 16 to 323 µg m−3 with a mean of (141 ± 88 (1σ)) µg m−3, with SO42− representing 8–25 % of PM2.5 mass. The observed Δ17O(SO42−) varied from 0.1 to 1.6 ‰ with a mean of (0.9 ± 0.3) ‰. Δ17O(SO42−) increased with PM2.5 levels in October 2014 while the opposite trend was observed from November 2014 to January 2015. Our estimate suggested that in-cloud reactions dominated sulfate production on polluted days (PDs, PM2.5 ≥ 75 µg m−3) of Case II in October 2014 due to the relatively high cloud liquid water content, with a fractional contribution of up to 68 %. During PDs of Cases I and III–V, heterogeneous sulfate production (Phet) was estimated to contribute 41–54 % to total sulfate formation with a mean of (48 ± 5) %. For the specific mechanisms of heterogeneous oxidation of SO2, chemical reaction kinetics calculations suggested S(IV) ( = SO2 ⚫ H2O + HSO3− + SO32−) oxidation by H2O2 in aerosol water accounted for 5–13 % of Phet. The relative importance of heterogeneous sulfate production by other mechanisms was constrained by our observed Δ17O(SO42−). Heterogeneous sulfate production via S(IV) oxidation by O3 was estimated to contribute 21–22 % of Phet on average. Heterogeneous sulfate production pathways that result in zero-Δ17O(SO42−), such as S(IV) oxidation by NO2 in aerosol water and/or by O2 via a radical chain mechanism, contributed the remaining 66–73 % of Phet. The assumption about the thermodynamic state of aerosols (stable or metastable) was found to significantly influence the calculated aerosol pH (7.6 ± 0.1 or 4.7 ± 1.1, respectively), and thus influence the relative importance of heterogeneous sulfate production via S(IV) oxidation by NO2 and by O2. Our local atmospheric conditions-based calculations suggest sulfate formation via NO2 oxidation can be the dominant pathway in aerosols at high-pH conditions calculated assuming stable state while S(IV) oxidation by O2 can be the dominant pathway providing that highly acidic aerosols (pH ≤ 3) exist. Our local atmospheric-conditions-based calculations illustrate the utility of Δ17O(SO42−) for quantifying sulfate formation pathways, but this estimate may be further improved with future regional modeling work.
Heterogeneous Sulfate Aerosol Formation Mechanisms During Wintertime Chinese Haze Events: Air Quality Model Assessment Using Observations of Sulfate Oxygen Isotopes in Beijing

Abstract:Air quality models have not been able to reproduce the magnitude of the observed concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during wintertime Chinese haze events. The discrepancy has been at least partly attributed to low biases in modeled sulfate production rates, due to the lack of heterogeneous sulfate production on aerosols in the models. In this study, we explicitly implement four heterogeneous sulfate formation mechanisms into a regional chemical transport model, in addition to gas-phase and in-cloud sulfate production. We compare the model results with observations of sulfate concentrations and oxygen isotopes, Δ17O(SO42-), in the winter of 2014–2015, the latter of which is highly sensitive to the relative importance of different sulfate production mechanisms. Model results suggest that heterogeneous sulfate production on aerosols accounts for about 20 % of sulfate production in clean and polluted conditions, partially reducing the modeled low bias in sulfate concentrations. Model sensitivity studies in comparison with the Δ17O(SO42-) observations suggest that heterogeneous sulfate formation is dominated by transition metal ion-catalyzed oxidation of SO2.
Modelling of Sulfur Chemistry in a Fog Episode in Northern China and Implication for the Efficacy of SO2 Emission Control

Abstract:Fog water phase is an effective media for aqueous sulfate formation, especially in polluted urban areas. Fog events frequently occur in northern China during wintertime, which are characterized by increased aerosol loadings with sulfate concentrations reaching about 200 micrograms per cubic meters in 2010s. Studies on sulfur chemistry in fog events specifically for this region are inadequate. In this study, we combine the in-situ measurements in a fog episode in winter, 2015 with a multiphase chemical box model to interpret the sulfur species transformation and their key drivers in fog aqueous phase. Our model results demonstrate that the oxidation by NO2 in fog water serves as the most important pathway, explaining 97% of the sulfate production. High liquid water content in fog and elevated precursors concentrations are the major drivers of rapid sulfate formation. In line with observational studies, the reaction of dissolved SO2 and HCHO yields the production of hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) equivalent to 11% of the sulfate mass. Given the high dependence of sulfate and HMS production rates to liquid phase acidity, the nonlinear response of their mass concentrations to the air pollution policies should be further examined.

Abstract:Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) are the predominant components of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and have significant impacts on air quality, human health, and climate change. In this study, the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ) was modified to incorporate SO2 heterogeneous reactions on the surface of dust particles. The revised model was then used to simulate the spatiotemporal characteristics of SIA over China and analyze the impacts of meteorological factors and dust on SIA formation. Including the effects of dust improved model performance for the simulation of SIA concentrations, particularly for sulfate. The simulated annual SIA concentration in China was approximately 10.1 μg/m3 on domain average, with strong seasonal variation: highest in winter and lowest in summer. High SIA concentrations were concentrated in developed regions with high precursor emissions, such as the North China Plain, Yangtze River Delta, Sichuan Basin, and Pearl River Delta. Strong correlations between meteorological factors and SIA pollution levels suggested that heterogeneous reactions under high humidity played an important role on SIA formation, particularly during severe haze pollution periods. Acting as surfaces for heterogeneous reactions, dust particles significantly affected sulfate formation, suggesting the importance of reducing dust emissions for controlling SIA and PM2.5 pollution.

Abstract:Since alpha-crystallin was shown to have in vitro chaperone-like activity, its structure-function relationship has been extensively studied. However, the mechanism of this function is poorly understood. In this study, we monitored the interaction of alpha-crystallin with different proteins namely the insulin B-chain (3.382 kDa), lysozyme (14.4 kDa), and conalbumin (86.18 kDa), all destabilized by dithiothreitol. We found that at 4 degrees C alpha-crystallin prevents the aggregation of destabilized insulin. During the time course of the interaction of alpha-crystallin with the substrate protein, we observed three classes of molecules: the monomeric protein and monomeric alpha-crystallin peptides, alpha-crystallin/substrate protein complexes with a size comparable to alpha-crystallin and large particles. The latter are responsible for the increase of the light scattering of solutions, containing alpha-crystallin/destabilized protein complexes. The molecular exchange between the different populations is temperature dependent and seems to be ruled by the kinetics of the structural changes of the destabilized proteins. At the end all monomeric species are transformed to larger aggregates. The large complexes are enriched in destabilized proteins, compared to the initial ratio alpha-crystallin/substrate protein.
Significant formation of sulfate aerosols contributed by the heterogeneous drivers of dust surface

Abstract:Abstract. The importance of dust heterogeneous oxidation in the removal of atmospheric SO2 and formation of sulfate aerosols is not adequately understood. In this study, the Fe-, Ti-, and Al-bearing components, Na+, Cl−, K+, and Ca2+ of the dust surface, were discovered to be closely associated with the heterogeneous formation of sulfate. Regression models were then developed to make a reliable prediction of the heterogeneous reactivity based on the particle chemical compositions. Further, the recognized gas-phase, aqueous-phase, and heterogeneous oxidation routes were quantitatively assessed and kinetically compared by combining the laboratory work with a modelling study. In the presence of 55 μg m−3 airborne dust, heterogeneous oxidation accounts for approximately 28.6 % of the secondary sulfate aerosols during nighttime, while the proportion decreases to 13.1 % in the presence of solar irradiation. On the dust surface, heterogeneous drivers (e.g. transition metal constituents, water-soluble ions) are more efficient than surface-adsorbed oxidants (e.g. H2O2, NO2, O3) in the conversion of SO2, particularly during nighttime. Dust heterogeneous oxidation offers an opportunity to explain the missing sulfate source during severe haze pollution events, and its contribution proportion in the complex atmospheric environments could be even higher than the current calculation results. Overall, the dust surface drivers are responsible for the significant formation of sulfate aerosols and have profound impacts on the atmospheric sulfur cycling.

Roles of Sulfur Oxidation Pathways in the Variability in Stable Sulfur Isotopic Composition of Sulfate Aerosols at an Urban Site in Beijing, China

Abstract:Sulfate (SO42–) is an important chemical species in atmospheric aerosols, which strongly impacts atmospheric chemistry processes and climate change. Stable sulfur isotopes (δ34S) of sulfate aerosols in PM2.5 were measured in Beijing from November 13 to December 2, 2018, to investigate the pathways of formation of sulfate aerosols. The results showed that SO42– constituted a major fraction (18%) of water-soluble ions and significant enhancement of sulfate was observed during the haze period. The δ34S-SO42– values averaged at 4.4 ± 1.4‰ during the full period, exhibiting a downward trend with an increase in sulfate concentration. The change in sulfur isotope values could not be explained by the changes in emission sources. Significant correlations were found between observed δ34S-SO42– values and SO2 oxidation ratios (R = −0.88; p < 0.01), indicating the changes in sulfur isotopes were attributed to the SO2 oxidation processes. On the basis of Rayleigh distillation, the average fractionation factor between SO2 and SO42– was 4.0 ± 1.2‰. Combining sulfur isotopes and the Bayesian model, we quantified the contributions of primary sulfate, OH, H2O2/O3, NO2, and O2 [catalyzed by transition metal ions (TMIs)] oxidation pathways to sulfate formation were 7%, 20%, 16%, 27%, and 30%, respectively. The contributions of TMI and NO2 pathways increased from 24% and 20% during the clean period to 38% and 29% during the haze period, respectively. Abstract:In recent years in a few Chinese megacities, fog events lasting one to a few days have been frequently associated with high levels of aerosol loading characterized by high sulfate (as high as 30 μg m(-3)), therefore termed as haze-fog events. The concomitant pollution characteristics include high gas-phase mixing ratios of SO2 (up to 71 ppbv) and NO2 (up to 69 ppbv), high aqueous phase pH (5-6), and smaller fog droplets (as low as 2 μm), resulting from intense emissions from fossil fuel combustion and construction activities supplying abundant Ca(2+). In this work, we use an observation-based model for secondary inorganic aerosols (OBM-SIA) to simulate sulfate formation pathways under conditions of haze-fog events encountered in Chinese megacities. The OBM analysis has identified, at a typical haze-fogwater pH of 5.6, the most important pathway to be oxidation of S(IV) by dissolved NO2, followed by the heterogeneous reaction of SO2 on the aerosol surface. The aqueous phase oxidation of S(IV) by H2O2 is a very minor formation pathway as a result of the high NOx conditions suppressing H2O2 formation. The model results indicate that the unique cocktail of high fogwater pH, high concentrations of NO2, SO2, and PM, and small fog droplets are capable of greatly enhancing sulfate formation. Such haze-fog conditions could lead to rapid sulfate production at night and subsequently high PM2.5 in the morning when the fog evaporates. Sulfate formation is simulated to be highly sensitive to fogwater pH, PM, and precursor gases NO2 and SO2. Such insights on major contributing factors imply that reduction of road dust and NOx emissions could lessen PM2.5 loadings in Chinese megacities during fog events.

Abstract:Atmospheric measurements showed rapid sulfate formation during severe haze episodes in China, with fine particulate matter (PM) consisting of a multi-component mixture that is dominated by organic species. Several recent studies using the thermodynamic model estimated the particle acidity and sulfate production rate, by treating the PM exclusively as a mixture of inorganic salts dominated by ammonium sulfate and neglecting the effects of organic compounds. Noticeably, the estimated pH and sulfate formation rate during pollution periods in China were highly conflicting among the previous studies. Here we show that a particle mixture of inorganic salts adopted by the previous studies does not represent a suitable model system and that the acidity and sulfate formation cannot be reliably inferred without accounting for the effects of multi-aerosol compositions during severe haze events in China. Our laboratory experiments show that SO2 oxidation by NO2 with NH3 neutralization on fine aerosols is dependent on the particle hygroscopicity, phase-state, and acidity. Ammonium sulfate and oxalic acid seed particles exposed to vapors of SO2, NO2, and NH3 at high relative humidity (RH) exhibit distinct size growth and sulfate formation. Aqueous ammonium sulfate particles exhibit little sulfate production, in contrast to aqueous oxalic acid particles with significant sulfate production. Our field measurements demonstrate significant contribution of water-soluble organic matter to fine PM in China and indicate that the use of oxalic acid in laboratory experiments is representative of ambient organic dominant aerosols. While the particle acidity cannot be accurately determined from field measurements or calculated using the thermodynamic model, our results reveal that the pH value of ambient organics-dominated aerosols is sufficiently high to promote efficient SO2 oxidation by NO2 with NH3 neutralization under polluted conditions in China.
A Comprehensive Observation-Based Multiphase Chemical Model Analysis of Sulfur Dioxide Oxidations in Both Summer and Winter

Abstract:Sulfate is one of the main components of haze fine particles, and its formation mechanism remains controversial. A lack of detailed and comprehensive field data hinders the accurate evaluation of relative roles of prevailing sulfate formation pathways. Here, we analyzed the sulfate production rates using a state-of-the-art multiphase model constrained to the observed concentrations of transition metal, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, hydrogen peroxide and other important parameters in winter and summer in the North China Plain. Our results showed that aqueous transition metal ion (TMI)-catalyzed oxidation was the most important pathway followed by the surface oxidation of Mn in both winter and summer while the hydroxyl and Criegee radical oxidations contribute significantly in summer. In addition, we also modeled the published cases for the fog and cloud conditions. It is found that nitrogen dioxide oxidation is the dominant pathway for the fog in a higher pH range while hydroperoxide and ozone oxidations dominated for the cloud.
Trends and Drivers of Soluble Iron Deposition from East Asian Dust to the Northwest Pacific: A Springtime Analysis (2001–2017)

Abstract:Abstract. Recent shifts in dust emissions and atmospheric compositions in East Asia may have a significant impact on the deposition of soluble iron from dust over the Northwest Pacific. This study investigates the trends and driving factors behind this phenomenon during the springs of 2001–2017 using an enhanced version of the Community Atmosphere Model version 6 with comprehensive stratospheric chemistry (CAM6-chem). We improved the model to account for desert dust mineralogy and atmospheric chemical processes that promote iron dissolution, allowing for an in-depth analysis of the evolution of dust iron. Our findings indicate a decreasing trend in dust soluble iron deposition from East Asia to the Northwest Pacific by 2.4 % per year, primarily due to reduced dust emissions driven by declining surface winds over dust source regions. Conversely, the solubility of dust iron showed an increasing trend, rising from 1.5 % in 2001 to 1.7 % in 2017. This increased iron solubility is linked to the acidification of coarse mode aerosols and in-cloud oxalate-ligand-promoted dissolution. Sensitivity model simulations reveal that the increase in anthropogenic NOx emissions, rather than the decrease in SO2, plays a dominant role in enhancing dust aerosol acidity. This study highlights a dual trend: a decrease in the overall deposition of soluble iron from dust, but an increase in the solubility of the iron itself. It underscores the critical roles of both dust emission and atmospheric processing in promoting iron dissolution, which further influences soluble iron deposition and marine ecology.

Abstract:Dust heterogeneous chemistry plays an important role in tropospheric chemistry, but its parameterization in numerical models is often quite simplified, which hampers accurate prediction of particulate matter and its chemical component. In this study, we investigate the evolution of dust heterogeneous chemical process and its potential impacts on gaseous and aerosol components during a dust pollution episode from March 27 to April 2, 2015 over North China. Based on field measurements, the significant role of relative humidity (RH) in dust heterogeneous chemistry is found and a RH-dependent parameterization for uptake coefficients of HNO3 and SO2 is incorporated in GEOS-Chem to reproduce the dust heterogeneous chemical process. During the study period, observed dust sulfate (DSO4) and dust nitrate (DNIT) exhibit maximum concentrations of 9.1 and 22.8 μg m-3 respectively, accompanied by high RH and gaseous precursor concentrations. DSO4 concentrations are positively related to RH. The observed dust sulfate oxidation ratio (DSOR) is elevated evidently with increased RH, especially when RH is higher than ~40%, implying that enhanced RH could promote heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 to DSO4. Model simulation shows that when incorporating the RH-dependent parameterization, DNIT and DSO4 are generally well captured and the model performance of total sulfate oxidation ratio (TSOR) and total nitrate oxidation ratio (TNOR) are improved. High contribution of DNIT and DSO4 are found to be located over the regions close to source areas (>60%) and downwind regions (>40%), respectively. Sensitivity results show that SO2 and HNO3 reduce by 2-24 μg m-3 and 1-18 μg m-3 when considering dust heterogeneous impacts, thus leading to reduction in non-dust sulfate and non-dust nitrate concentrations. As a result, simulated NH3 increases and ammonium reduces by more than 20%. Our study indicates that the contribution of heterogeneous reactions to sulfate formation is 20-30% over North China.

Abstract:Sulfate plays an important role in atmospheric haze in China, which has received considerable attention in recent years. Various types of parameterization methods and heterogeneous oxidation rates of SO2 have been used in previous studies. However, properly representing heterogeneous sulfate formation in air quality models remains a big challenge. In this study, we quantified the heterogeneous oxidation reaction using experimental results that approximate the haze conditions in China. Firstly, a series of experiments were conducted to investigate the heterogeneous uptake of SO2 with different relative humidity (RH) levels and the presence of NH3 and NO2 on natural dust surfaces. Then the uptake coefficients for heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 to sulfate at different RH under NH3 and NO2 coexistence were parameterized based on the experimental results and implemented in the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ). Simulation results suggested that this new parameterization improved model performance by 6.6% in the simulation of wintertime sulfate concentrations for Beijing. The simulated maximum growth rate of SO42− during a heavy pollution period increased from 0.97 μg m−3 h−1 to 10.11 μg m−3 h−1. The heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 in the presence of NH3 contributed up to 23% of the sulfate concentration during heavy pollution periods.

Abstract:Sulfate (SO42-) sources are unclear leading to the underestimation of its concentration in the model. Hourly resolution d(34)S-SO2 and d(34)S-SO42- values of three haze episodes (EP1-EP3) were synchronously collected for the first time to quantify the influence of S-34 fractionation from emission sources (e.g., coal combustion) and SO2 atmospheric oxidation on SO2/SO42- source apportionment. After considering the S-34 fractionation from coal combustion and atmospheric oxidation, the reasonable and logical source contributions of SO42- were obtained, showing highly consistent with that of Positive Matrix Factorization model results. Considering the S-34 fraction from atmospheric oxidation, the source apportionment of SO2/SO42- obtained by hourly resolution d(34)S-SO2 and d(34)S-SO42- can more accurately reflect the dynamic changes of emission sources. Traffic emissions (49%) and coal combustion (46%-65%) were the major contributors to SO2/SO42- in EP1 and EP2-EP3, respectively. However, obvious deviations of coal combustion contribution were found without considering S-34 fractionation from coal combustion. Especially for the northwest transmission channels in EP2-EP3, the deviation values accounted for 17.1%-38.5% of secondary SO42-. Moreover, d(34)S was considered as a more sensitive source indicator than SO2 concentration by the results comparison of S-34 technique and air quality model (Nested Air Quality Prediction Model System), which can provide more reliable evidence for SO2 emission control.
Anthropogenic Emission Sources of Sulfate Aerosols in Hangzhou, East China: Insights from Isotope Techniques with Consideration of Fractionation Effects between Gas-to-Particle Transformations

Abstract:Sulfate (SO42–) is a major species in atmospheric fine particles (PM2.5), inducing haze formation and influencing Earth's climate. In this study, the δ34S values in PM2.5 sulfate (δ34S-SO42–) were measured in Hangzhou, east China, from 2015 September to 2016 October. The result showed that the δ34S-SO42– values varied from 1.6 to 6.4‰ with the higher values in the winter. The estimated fractionation factor (α34Sg→p) from SO2 to SO42– averaged at 3.9 ± 1.6‰. The higher α34Sg→p values in the winter were mainly attributed to the decrease of ambient temperature. We further compared the quantified source apportionments of sulfate by isotope techniques with and without the consideration of fractionation factors. The result revealed that the partitioned emission sources to sulfate with the consideration of the fractionation effects were more logical, highlighting that fractionation effects should be considered in partitioning emission sources to sulfate using sulfur isotope techniques. With considering the fractionation effects, coal burning was the dominant source to sulfate (85.5%), followed by traffic emissions (12.8%) and oil combustion (1.7%). Abstract:Abstract The formation mechanism of aerosol sulfate during wintertime haze events in China is still largely unknown. As companions, SO 2 and transition metals are mainly emitted from coal combustion. Here, we argue that the transition metal-catalyzed oxidation of SO 2 on aerosol surfaces could be the dominant sulfate formation pathway and investigate this hypothesis by integrating chamber experiments, numerical simulations and in-field observations. Our analysis shows that the contribution of the manganese-catalyzed oxidation of SO 2 on aerosol surfaces is approximately one to two orders of magnitude larger than previously known routes, and contributes 69.2% ± 5.0% of the particulate sulfur production during haze events. This formation pathway could explain the missing source of sulfate and improve the understanding of atmospheric chemistry and climate change.

Abstract:Soluble iron (FeS) in aerosols contributes to free oxygen radical generation with implications for human health, and potentially catalyzes sulfur dioxide oxidation. It is also an important external source of micronutrients for ocean ecosystems. However, factors controlling FeS concentration and its contribution to total iron (FeT) in aerosols remain poorly understand. Here, FeS and FeT in PM2.5 was studied at four urban sites in eastern China from 21 to 31 December, 2017. Average FeT (869–1490 ng m−3) and FeS (24–68 ng m−3) concentrations were higher in northern than southern China cities, but Fe solubility (%FeS, 2.7–5.0%) showed no spatial pattern. Correlation analyses suggested %FeS was strongly correlated with FeS and PM2.5 instead of FeT concentrations. Individual particle observations confirmed that more than 65% of nano-sized Fe-containing particles were internally mixed with sulfates and nitrates. Furthermore, there was a high correlation between sulfates or nitrates/FeT molar ratio and %FeS. We also found that the sulfates/nitrates had weaker effects on %FeS at RH < 50% than at RH > 50%, suggesting RH as indirect factor can influence %FeS in PM2.5. These results suggest an important role of chemical processing in enhancing %FeS in the polluted atmosphere.

Abstract:There has been a significant decline in SO2, the main precursor of sulfate, in North China over the past decade due to strict sulfur removal measures, whereas the amount of photochemical oxidants such as ozone has continued to increase in this region. In this study, we examined temporal variation in the concentrations of fine sulfate in urban Ji'nan in North China from 2008 till 2015. Over this period, the sulfate concentration decreased by -3.86 +/- 2.50 mu g m(-3) yr(-1) (-10.0 % yr(-1)), which is slower that the rate of decrease for SO2 during the same period (-11.6 % yr(-1)). Nevertheless, the sulfur oxidation ratio and the concentrations of ozone and calcium (an indicator of dust particles) increased over this period. An analysis of the seasonal and diurnal variations in sulfate and the related parameters in 2015 indicated that the ambient sulfate concentration was largely influenced by the amount of SO2, atmospheric oxidants, aerosol loading, and meteorological conditions. A detailed investigation of the production of sulfate in eight case studies found that the observed sulfate production rate was in the range of 1.1-10.8 mu g m(-3) h(-1). Numerical calculations revealed that SO2 oxidation by OH and H2O2 was a major contributor to sulfate production during the daytime in warm seasons. At all times of the day in cold seasons and at nighttime in warm seasons, the heterogeneous SO2 reaction on aerosol surfaces contributed 30.1%-65.7% of the sulfate production. The increasing amount of ozone and dust particles in this region, which are associated with photochemical pollution and urban dust emissions, are responsible for the slower decrease in sulfate concentration. Therefore, photochemical smog and urban dust should receive adequate attention in order to mitigate the sulfate pollution.

Abstract:A regional haze with daily PM2.5 (fine particulate matters with diameters less than 2.5 µm) exceeding 500 µg/m3 lasted for several days in January 2013 over North China, offering an opportunity to evaluate models. Observations show that inorganic aerosols (sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) are the largest contributor to PM2.5 during the haze period, while sulfate shows the largest enhancement ratio of 5.4 from the clean to haze period. The nested‐grid GEOS‐Chem model reproduces the distribution of PM2.5 and simulates up to 364 µg/m3 of daily maximum PM2.5. Yet on average, the model is a factor of 3 and 4 lower in PM2.5 and fails to capture the large sulfate enhancement from the clean to haze period. A doubling of SO2 emissions over North China, along with daily meteorology corrections, would be required to reconcile model results with surface SO2 observations, but it is not sufficient to explain the model discrepancy in sulfate. Heterogeneous uptake of SO2 on deliquesced aerosols is proposed as an additional source of sulfate under high‐relative humidity conditions during the haze period. Parameterizing this process in the model improves the simulated spatial distribution and results in a 70% increase of sulfate enhancement ratio and a 120% increase in sulfate fraction in PM2.5. Combined adjustments in emissions, meteorology, and sulfate chemistry lead to higher sulfate by a factor of 3 and 50% higher PM2.5, significantly reducing the model's low bias during the haze.
