Abstract:Purpose The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most essential areas of health in any country. It is defined as a system of processes, operations and organizations involved in discovering, developing and producing drugs. The supply chain in the pharmaceutical field is one of the most important strategic issues in the pharmaceutical and health-care industries. The purpose of this study is to reduce the total cost of the supply chain network and reduce the amount of distribution scheduling. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the authors designed a drug supply chain network with uncertainty-related corruption. The optimal number and location of potential facilities, the optimal allocation of flow between facilities, the optimal routing of vehicles and the optimal amount of inventory in production and distribution center warehouses were determined to achieve these two objective functions. Findings In evaluating the small sample size problem, it was found that the comprehensive benchmarking method was more efficient than the other methods in obtaining the mean index of the first objective function. The utility function method has also proved its efficiency in obtaining the mean of the second objective function indices, the spacing index and the computational time. Because of the inefficiency of GAMS software in resolving size issues, the modified NSGA II and MOPSO algorithms with modified priority-based encryption have been used. First, using the Taguchi method, the initial parameters of the metaheuristic algorithms are adjusted, and then, 15 sample problems are designed in larger sizes. To avoid generating random data, five problems were equally designed, and the averages of objective functions and metrics of met heuristic algorithms (number of efficient solutions, maximum expansion index, spacing index and computational time) were analyzed as the basis of evaluation and comparison. Therefore, using all the indicators and results of the NSGA II algorithm is recommended. Originality/value In this research, a biobjective modeling approach is proposed to minimize the total costs of the supply chain network (construction costs, storage costs and product transportation costs between centers) and advertising costs and to minimize distribution and transportation scheduling across each level of the supply chain network.

Abstract:This study develops a mathematical model to mitigate disruptions in a three-stage (i.e., supplier, manufacturer, retailer) supply chain network subject to a natural disaster like COVID-19 pandemic. This optimization model aims to manage supply chain disruptions for a pandemic situation where disruptions can occur to both the supplier and the retailer. This study proposes an inventory policy using the renewal reward theory for maximizing profit for the manufacturer under study. Tested using two heuristics algorithms, namely the genetic algorithm (GA) and pattern search (PS), the proposed inventory-based disruption risk mitigation model provides the manufacturer with an optimum decision to maximize profits in a production cycle. A sensitivity analysis was offered to ensure the applicability of the model in practical settings. Results reveal that the PS algorithm performed better for such model than a heuristic method like GA. The ordering quantity and reordering point were also lower in PS than GA. Overall, it was evident that PS is more suited for this problem. Supply chain managers need to employ appropriate inventory policies to deal with several uncertain conditions, for example, uncertainties arising due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This model can help managers establish and redesign an inventory policy to maximize the profit by considering probable disruptions in the supply chain network.

Abstract:Unpredictable changes in the current business environment have made organizations pay attention to the concept of agility. This concept is a key feature to survive and compete in turbulent markets while considering customers’ fluctuating needs. An organization’s agility is a function of its supply chain’s agility. The present study offers a System Dynamics (SD) model for Iran’s Pharmaceutical Supply Chain (PSC). The model is presented in three steps. First, the Supply Chain (SC) indicators were extracted based on theoretical foundations and literature review results. Second, an SD model of the PSC was extracted in the context of the COVID‐19 pandemic with the necessary analyses. Finally, the desired outputs and strategies were obtained by conducting a case study. The results indicated that the PSC’s highest agility could be guaranteed by the simultaneous implementation of three strategies: investment, Human Capital Development (HCD), and accelerated completion of ongoing projects on a priority basis. According to these results, the organization had better determine the amount of capital and workforce required for ongoing projects, then design funding solutions to implement these projects and implement them according to the projects’ priority.

Abstract:Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc across supply chain (SC) operations worldwide. Specifically, decisions on the recovery planning are subject to multi-dimensional uncertainty stemming from singular and correlated disruptions in demand, supply, and production capacities. This is a new and understudied research area. In this study, we examine, SC recovery for high-demand items (e.g., hand sanitizer and face masks). We first developed a stochastic mathematical model to optimise recovery for a three-stage SC exposed to the multi-dimensional impacts of COVID-19 pandemic. This allows to generalize a novel problem setting with simultaneous demand, supply, and capacity uncertainty in a multi-stage SC recovery context. We then developed a chance-constrained programming approach and present in this article a new and enhanced multi-operator differential evolution variant-based solution approach to solve our model. With the optimisation, we sought to understand the impact of different recovery strategies on SC profitability as well as identify optimal recovery plans. Through extensive numerical experiments, we demonstrated capability towards efficiently solving both small- and large-scale SC recovery problems. We tested, evaluated, and analyzed different recovery strategies, scenarios, and problem scales to validate our approach. Ultimately, the study provides a useful tool to optimise reactive adaptation strategies related to how and when SC recovery operations should be deployed during a pandemic. This study contributes to literature through development of a unique problem setting with multi-dimensional uncertainty impacts for SC recovery, as well as an efficient solution approach for solution of both small- and large-scale SC recovery problems. Relevant decision-makers can use the findings of this research to select the most efficient SC recovery plan under pandemic conditions and to determine the timing of its deployment.

Abstract:Success in supply chain implementation depends on the way of dealing with market changes and customer needs. Agility is a concept that has been introduced in recent years to improve the supply chain. On the other hand, paying attention to environmental problems is another issue, and chains are trying to increase their popularity by focusing on this issue. Considering the importance of this issue, designing a multiobjective closed-loop supply chain network has been discussed in this research. The main contribution of this research is the integration of green and agility concepts in supply chain design. In this regard, a mathematical model is presented with economic, environmental, and agility objectives. First, the mathematical model is solved using the Epsilon constraint method, and then, the multiobjective weed algorithm is proposed to solve the model. The results of comparisons between the two methods show that the multiobjective weed algorithm has performed well in terms of various metrics of NPS, SNS, and Max Spread. In terms of the solving time, the average solving time of this algorithm was about 0.1% of the solving time of the Epsilon constraint method. Moreover, all cases show the superiority of the multiobjective weed algorithm over the Epsilon constraint method in solving the proposed mathematical model.

Abstract:Supply chains are vulnerable to various disruption risks that can adversely affect their overall performance and objectives. This study addresses the challenge of designing a resilient and environmentally sustainable mixed open and closed-loop supply chain network that can withstand both operational and disruption risks. The research employs a bi-objective stochastic mathematical model to examine the balance between environmental sustainability and profitability within the SC. To mitigate the impact of disruptions, several resilience strategies are incorporated into the model, significantly reducing their adverse effects. Due to the inherent complexity of the problem, the study introduces a novel hybrid metaheuristic algorithm that combines ant colony optimization with teaching and learning-based optimization, named ACO-TLBO. Additionally, two other enhanced hybrid metaheuristics are proposed. The performance of these solution methods is assessed through various test problems, using specific performance metrics for comparison. Results reveal that the ACO-TLBO algorithm excels in generating high-quality, non-dominated solutions. The model's practical applicability is demonstrated through a case study in the tire industry, validating its effectiveness. The findings indicate that the proposed resilience strategies are crucial for minimizing the negative impacts of disruptions on SC objectives. Furthermore, the results underscore the importance of resilience in maintaining both sustainability and profitability within supply chains.

Abstract:SUMMARy _ Twenty-two woodworkers presenting with respiratory symptoms after exposure to the dust of western red cedar were studied. Eighteen of them had bronchial reactions to the inhalation of red cedar extract. They presented with a characteristic clinical picture. After a period of intensive exposure to red cedar, they developed nocturnal attacks of cough and asthma. Later, symptoms occurred earlier during the day if they continued to work with this wood. Twelve of them also had rhinitis. They improved during weekends and holidays. Most recovered within 6 months of cessation of exposure. The inhalation provocation test was the only method of confirming the. diagnosis. An immediate asthmatic reaction was induced in 4, a late asthmatic reaction in 8, and "dual" reactions in the remaining 6 patients. Skin tests with extract of this wood produced an immediate reaction in only 3 patients. Precipitin studies failed to detect the presence of antibodies in the patients' sera against the extract of this wood. The 4 patients who did not react to red cedar extract on inhalation presented with a different clinical picture. They did not recover on cessation of exposure. In provocation tests, plicatic acid, a major fraction in the red cedar extract, produced bronchial reactions similar to those produced by the whole extract. Plicatic acid .is probably the compound in the red cedar that causes the respiratory symptoms. The p.attern of inhalation reaction suggested an allergic basis.

Abstract:As an abrupt epidemic occurs, healthcare systems are shocked by the surge in the number of susceptible patients' demands, and decision-makers mostly rely on their frame of reference for urgent decision-making. Many reports have declared the COVID-19 impediments to trading and global economic growth. This study aims to provide a mathematical model to support pharmaceutical supply chain planning during the COVID-19 epidemic. Additionally, it aims to offer new insights into hospital supply chain problems by unifying cold and non-cold chains and considering a wide range of pharmaceuticals and vaccines. This approach is unprecedented and includes an analysis of various pharmaceutical features such as temperature, shelf life, priority, and clustering. To propose a model for planning the pharmaceutical supply chains, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is used for a four-echelon supply chain design. This model aims to minimize the costs involved in the pharmaceutical supply chain by maintaining an acceptable service level. Also, this paper considers uncertainty as an intrinsic part of the problem and addresses it through the wait-and-see method. Furthermore, an unexplored unsupervised learning method in the realm of supply chain planning has been used to cluster the pharmaceuticals and the vaccines and its merits and drawbacks are proposed. A case of Tehran hospitals with real data has been used to show the model's capabilities, as well. Based on the obtained results, the proposed approach is able to reach the optimum service level in the COVID conditions while maintaining a reduced cost. The experiment illustrates that the hospitals' adjacency and emergency orders alleviated the service level significantly. The proposed MILP model has proven to be efficient in providing a practical intuition for decision-makers. The clustering technique reduced the size of the problem and the time required to solve the model considerably.

Abstract:Due to the high competition in today’s global market, design of an efficient supply chain is necessary to achieve competitive advantages. Having concerned this issue, scheduling is one of critical concepts in supply chain management that leads to increase efficiency and customer satisfaction as well as decrease costs. Recently, build-to-order supply chain (BTO-SC) system has attracted considerable attention because of its successful implementation in high-tech companies such as Dell, BMW, Compaq, and Gateway. Despite several studies in the context of BTO-SC, there has been revealed several gaps that this study attempts to eliminate them. In this paper, a fuzzy mixed-integer linear programming optimization model is proposed for an integrated supply, production, and distribution supply chain of multi-product, multi-level, multi-plant. Because of uncertainty, imprecision and variability associated with real data, fuzzy approach is utilized for processing such information in modeling the problem. Usually, supply chain problems have conflicting objectives that should be optimized simultaneously. Thus, the proposed model aims to optimize customer satisfaction as well as chain supply costs, simultaneously. Due to high complexity and lack of proper benchmark for this problem, the model is solved by some popular multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms. Also, Taguchi method is deployed to calibrate as well as control the parameters in four mentioned algorithms. Finally, a new framework is proposed for ranking of these algorithms use of fuzzy VIKOR method. The presented framework is an excellent comparison dashboard, and it is applicable not only for comparing multi-objective genetic algorithms but also for comparing all of multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms.

Abstract:This paper aims to design a mathematical model for sustainable closed-loop supply chains during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The proposed multi-objective model minimizes the total cost, carbon emission, and infection risk of the network and also maximizes social benefits. Some practical conditions such as stochastic demands, supplier selection, and facility disruptions are considered in the model. This stochastic model is transformed into a deterministic model by the Chance-Constrained Programming (CCP) approach. Thirty test datasets are applied to examine the effects of COVID-19 on the performance of the network. The problems are solved under two conditions (with and without COVID-19 considerations), and the results show that the total inventory of the model with COVID-19 is higher than the model without COVID-19. Moreover, the value of aggregated objectives of the model with COVID-19 is greater than the other model which indicates the greater distance from the optimal objectives. However, the computational efficiency of the model without COVID-19 is much higher than the other one. Some sensitivity analyses are also carried out, and several policy implications are proposed. According to the demand sensitivity analysis, when managers expect that the demands will increase, they should focus on the infection risk objective. On the contrary, when they expect decreased demands, they should pay more attention to environmental and economic objectives. The analysis of the objectives' weights indicates that investing in the environmental and COVID-19 risk dimensions needs more financial resources compared to investing in the social dimension.

Developing a model for agile supply: an empirical study from Iranian pharmaceutical supply chain

Abstract:Agility is the fundamental characteristic of a supply chain needed for survival in turbulent markets, where environmental forces create additional uncertainty resulting in higher risk in the supply chain management. In addition, agility helps providing the right product, at the right time to the consumer. The main goal of this research is therefore to promote supplier selection in pharmaceutical industry according to the formative basic factors. Moreover, this paper can configure its supply network to achieve the agile supply chain. The present article analyzes the supply part of supply chain based on SCOR model, used to assess agile supply chains by highlighting their specific characteristics and applicability in providing the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This methodology provides an analytical modeling; the model enables potential suppliers to be assessed against the multiple criteria using both quantitative and qualitative measures. In addition, for making priority of critical factors, TOPSIS algorithm has been used as a common technique of MADM model. Finally, several factors such as delivery speed, planning and reorder segmentation, trust development and material quantity adjustment are identified and prioritized as critical factors for being agile in supply of API.

Abstract:AbstractDue to the increased levels of uncertainty in the world today and the expansion of supply chain boundaries, companies have been observed trying to enhance supply chain resilience to deal with disruptions caused by severe disasters. There is, however, a new stimulus for the disorder, something quite similar to what has been witnessed recently. It is a new phenomenon called pandemics such as SARS, Ebola, and Coronaviruses. On the other hand, as a result of the imposition of economic sanctions, there is uncertainty in the decision-making parameters of the supply chains, creating difficulties for them. Iron is a raw material that affects both the industry and economy of a nation and can be turned into a closed-loop network. In the current research, using a multi-objective mathematical model, a closed-loop supply chain of steel is presented under the circumstances of the COVID-19 embargo and pandemic. Existing uncertainties are modelled with a robust optimization approach in an uncertain environment. As part of the analysis, appropriate strategies to increase chain resilience will be identified and evaluated. A case study of an active steel supply chain in Iran has been examined for model validation. This model optimizes final net profit, water, and energy use, emissions, and control of coronavirus emissions. In the present study, a three-objective mathematical model is determined and solved in small dimensions based on modified LP-metric and ε-constraint approaches. Further, based on MOPSO and NSGA-II meta-heuristic methods, the best solution was selected in large dimensions.

Abstract:Optimizing the trade-off between crucial decisions has been a prominent issue to help decision-makers for synchronizing the production scheduling and distribution planning in supply chain management. In this article, a bi-objective integrated scheduling problem of production and distribution is addressed in a production environment with identical parallel machines. Besides, two objective functions are considered as measures for customer satisfaction and reduction of the manufacturer’s costs. The first objective is considered aiming at minimizing the total weighted tardiness and total operation time. The second objective is considered aiming at minimizing the total cost of the company’s reputational damage due to the number of tardy orders, total earliness penalty, and total batch delivery costs. First, a mathematical programming model is developed for the problem. Then, two well-known meta-heuristic algorithms are designed to spot near-optimal solutions since the problem is strongly NP-hard. A multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) is designed using a mutation function, followed by a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) with a one-point crossover operator and a heuristic mutation operator. The experiments on MOPSO and NSGA-II are carried out on small, medium, and large scale problems. Moreover, the performance of the two algorithms is compared according to some comparing criteria. The computational results reveal that the NSGA-II performs highly better than the MOPSO algorithm in small scale problems. In the case of medium and large scale problems, the efficiency of the MOPSO algorithm was significantly improved. Nevertheless, the NSGA-II performs robustly in the most important criteria.

Abstract:The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years has raised serious concerns about the distribution of fast-moving consumer goods products, given the freshness of their use. On the one hand, the distribution of fast-moving consumer goods with multiple vehicles has led to maintaining the freshness of items at the supply chain level, and on the other hand, it involves the high costs of using vehicles. Congestion of vehicles and drivers in the distribution of items has also increased the possibility of COVID-19 transmission. The importance of the above issue has led to the modeling of a multi-level supply chain problem in the FMCG industry by considering the freshness of items to reduce COVID-19 transmission. The most important issue considered in this article is to send fresh food in the shortest possible time to customers who cannot go to stores and wait in line to buy items in the conditions of Covid-19. Therefore, the designed model provides the possibility for customers to receive fresh food in addition to reducing costs and also reduce the possibility of contracting Covid-19. Designed supply chain network levels include suppliers of raw materials, manufacturers of consumer goods, distributors and end customers. In order to optimize the objectives of the problem, including minimizing the total costs of supply chain network design and maximizing the freshness of items, various strategic and tactical decisions such as locating potential facilities, routing vehicles, and optimally allocating the flow of goods should be made. Since the supply chain network model is considered to be NP-hard, meta-heuristic algorithms have been used to solve the problem by providing a modified priority-based encoding. The results show the high efficiency of the proposed solution method in a short time.

Abstract:Purpose Appropriate logistic planning for the pharmaceutical supply chain can significantly improve many financial and performance aspects. To this aim, a multi-objective optimization model is proposed in this paper that considers different types of pharmaceuticals, different vehicles with determining capacities and multi-period logistic planning. This model can be updated based on new information about resources and newly identified requests. Design/methodology/approach The main objective function of the proposed model in this paper is minimizing the unsatisfied prioritized requests for pharmaceuticals in the network. Besides, the total transportation activities of different types of vehicles and related costs are considered as other objectives. Therefore, these objectives are optimized hierarchically in the proposed model using the Lexicographic method. This method finds the best value for the first objective function. Then, it tries to optimize the second objective function while maintaining the optimality of the first objective function. The third objective function is optimized based on the optimality of other objective functions, as well. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II-multi-objective particle swarm optimization heuristic method is designed for this aim. Findings The performances of the proposed model were analyzed in different cases and its results for different problems were shown within the framework of a case study. Besides, the sensitivity analysis of results shows the logical behavior of the proposed model against various factors. Practical implications The proposed methodology can be applied to find the best logistic plan in real situations. Originality/value In this paper, the authors have tried to use a multi-objective optimization model to guide and correct the pharmaceutical supply chain to deal with the related requests. This is important because it can help managers to improve their plans.
Child-Level Predictors of Responsiveness to Evidence-Based Mathematics Intervention

Abstract:We identified child-level predictors of responsiveness to 2 types of mathematics intervention (calculation and word problem) among second-grade children with mathematics difficulty. Participants were 250 children in 107 classrooms in 23 schools pretested on mathematics and general cognitive measures and posttested on mathematics measures. We randomly assigned classrooms to calculation intervention, word-problem intervention, or business-as-usual control. Intervention lasted 17 weeks. Path analyses indicated that scores on working memory and language comprehension assessments moderated responsiveness to calculation intervention. No moderators were identified for responsiveness to word-problem intervention. Across both intervention groups and the control group, attentive behavior predicted both outcomes. Initial calculation skill predicted the calculation outcome, and initial language comprehension predicted word-problem outcomes. These results indicate that screening for calculation intervention should include a focus on working memory, language comprehension, attentive behavior, and calculations. Screening for word-problem intervention should focus on attentive behavior and word problems.

Abstract:Due to the unexpected breakdowns that can happen in various components of a production system, failure to reach production targets and interruptions in the process of production are not surprising. Since this issue remains for manufactured products, this halting results in the loss of profitability or demand. In this study, to address a number of challenges associated with the management of crucial spare parts inventory, a mathematical model is suggested for the determination of the optimal quantity of orders, in the case of an unpredicted supplier failure. Hence, a production system that has various types of equipment with crucial components is assumed, in which the crucial components are substituted with spare parts in the event of a breakdown. This study's inventory model was developed for crucial spare parts based on the Markov chain process model for the case of supplier disruption. Moreover, for optimum ordering policies, re-ordering points, and cost values of the system, four metaheuristic algorithms were utilized that include Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Moth–Flame Optimization (MFO) Algorithm, and Differential Evolution (DE) Algorithm. Based on the results, reliable suppliers cannot meet all of the demands; therefore, we should sometimes count on unreliable suppliers to reduce unmet demand.
