Abstract:SUMMARy _ Twenty-two woodworkers presenting with respiratory symptoms after exposure to the dust of western red cedar were studied. Eighteen of them had bronchial reactions to the inhalation of red cedar extract. They presented with a characteristic clinical picture. After a period of intensive exposure to red cedar, they developed nocturnal attacks of cough and asthma. Later, symptoms occurred earlier during the day if they continued to work with this wood. Twelve of them also had rhinitis. They improved during weekends and holidays. Most recovered within 6 months of cessation of exposure. The inhalation provocation test was the only method of confirming the. diagnosis. An immediate asthmatic reaction was induced in 4, a late asthmatic reaction in 8, and "dual" reactions in the remaining 6 patients. Skin tests with extract of this wood produced an immediate reaction in only 3 patients. Precipitin studies failed to detect the presence of antibodies in the patients' sera against the extract of this wood. The 4 patients who did not react to red cedar extract on inhalation presented with a different clinical picture. They did not recover on cessation of exposure. In provocation tests, plicatic acid, a major fraction in the red cedar extract, produced bronchial reactions similar to those produced by the whole extract. Plicatic acid .is probably the compound in the red cedar that causes the respiratory symptoms. The p.attern of inhalation reaction suggested an allergic basis.

Abstract:In this paper, a new responsive-green-cold vaccine supply chain network during the COVID-19 pandemic is developed for the first time. According to the proposed network, a new multi-objective, multi-period, multi-echelon mathematical model for the distribution-allocation-location problem is designed. Another important novelty in this paper is that it considers an Internet-of-Things application in the COVID-19 condition in the suggested model to enhance the accuracy, speed, and justice of vaccine injection with existing priorities. Waste management, environmental effects, coverage demand, and delivery time of COVID-19 vaccine simultaneously are therefore considered for the first time. The LP-metric method and meta-heuristic algorithms called Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO), and Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) algorithms are then used to solve the developed model. The other significant contribution, based on two presented meta-heuristic algorithms, is a new heuristic method called modified GWO (MGWO), and is developed for the first time to solve the model. Therefore, a set of test problems in different sizes is provided. Hence, to evaluate the proposed algorithms, assessment metrics including (1) percentage of domination, (2) the number of Pareto solutions, (3) data envelopment analysis, and (4) diversification metrics and the performance of the convergence are considered. Moreover, the Taguchi method is used to tune the algorithm's parameters. Accordingly, to illustrate the efficiency of the model developed, a real case study in Iran is suggested. Finally, the results of this research show MGO offers higher quality and better performance than other proposed algorithms based on assessment metrics, computational time, and convergence.

Abstract:This paper aims to design a mathematical model for sustainable closed-loop supply chains during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The proposed multi-objective model minimizes the total cost, carbon emission, and infection risk of the network and also maximizes social benefits. Some practical conditions such as stochastic demands, supplier selection, and facility disruptions are considered in the model. This stochastic model is transformed into a deterministic model by the Chance-Constrained Programming (CCP) approach. Thirty test datasets are applied to examine the effects of COVID-19 on the performance of the network. The problems are solved under two conditions (with and without COVID-19 considerations), and the results show that the total inventory of the model with COVID-19 is higher than the model without COVID-19. Moreover, the value of aggregated objectives of the model with COVID-19 is greater than the other model which indicates the greater distance from the optimal objectives. However, the computational efficiency of the model without COVID-19 is much higher than the other one. Some sensitivity analyses are also carried out, and several policy implications are proposed. According to the demand sensitivity analysis, when managers expect that the demands will increase, they should focus on the infection risk objective. On the contrary, when they expect decreased demands, they should pay more attention to environmental and economic objectives. The analysis of the objectives' weights indicates that investing in the environmental and COVID-19 risk dimensions needs more financial resources compared to investing in the social dimension.

Abstract:The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years has raised serious concerns about the distribution of fast-moving consumer goods products, given the freshness of their use. On the one hand, the distribution of fast-moving consumer goods with multiple vehicles has led to maintaining the freshness of items at the supply chain level, and on the other hand, it involves the high costs of using vehicles. Congestion of vehicles and drivers in the distribution of items has also increased the possibility of COVID-19 transmission. The importance of the above issue has led to the modeling of a multi-level supply chain problem in the FMCG industry by considering the freshness of items to reduce COVID-19 transmission. The most important issue considered in this article is to send fresh food in the shortest possible time to customers who cannot go to stores and wait in line to buy items in the conditions of Covid-19. Therefore, the designed model provides the possibility for customers to receive fresh food in addition to reducing costs and also reduce the possibility of contracting Covid-19. Designed supply chain network levels include suppliers of raw materials, manufacturers of consumer goods, distributors and end customers. In order to optimize the objectives of the problem, including minimizing the total costs of supply chain network design and maximizing the freshness of items, various strategic and tactical decisions such as locating potential facilities, routing vehicles, and optimally allocating the flow of goods should be made. Since the supply chain network model is considered to be NP-hard, meta-heuristic algorithms have been used to solve the problem by providing a modified priority-based encoding. The results show the high efficiency of the proposed solution method in a short time.

Abstract:Supply chains are vulnerable to various disruption risks that can adversely affect their overall performance and objectives. This study addresses the challenge of designing a resilient and environmentally sustainable mixed open and closed-loop supply chain network that can withstand both operational and disruption risks. The research employs a bi-objective stochastic mathematical model to examine the balance between environmental sustainability and profitability within the SC. To mitigate the impact of disruptions, several resilience strategies are incorporated into the model, significantly reducing their adverse effects. Due to the inherent complexity of the problem, the study introduces a novel hybrid metaheuristic algorithm that combines ant colony optimization with teaching and learning-based optimization, named ACO-TLBO. Additionally, two other enhanced hybrid metaheuristics are proposed. The performance of these solution methods is assessed through various test problems, using specific performance metrics for comparison. Results reveal that the ACO-TLBO algorithm excels in generating high-quality, non-dominated solutions. The model's practical applicability is demonstrated through a case study in the tire industry, validating its effectiveness. The findings indicate that the proposed resilience strategies are crucial for minimizing the negative impacts of disruptions on SC objectives. Furthermore, the results underscore the importance of resilience in maintaining both sustainability and profitability within supply chains.

Abstract:Purpose The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most essential areas of health in any country. It is defined as a system of processes, operations and organizations involved in discovering, developing and producing drugs. The supply chain in the pharmaceutical field is one of the most important strategic issues in the pharmaceutical and health-care industries. The purpose of this study is to reduce the total cost of the supply chain network and reduce the amount of distribution scheduling. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the authors designed a drug supply chain network with uncertainty-related corruption. The optimal number and location of potential facilities, the optimal allocation of flow between facilities, the optimal routing of vehicles and the optimal amount of inventory in production and distribution center warehouses were determined to achieve these two objective functions. Findings In evaluating the small sample size problem, it was found that the comprehensive benchmarking method was more efficient than the other methods in obtaining the mean index of the first objective function. The utility function method has also proved its efficiency in obtaining the mean of the second objective function indices, the spacing index and the computational time. Because of the inefficiency of GAMS software in resolving size issues, the modified NSGA II and MOPSO algorithms with modified priority-based encryption have been used. First, using the Taguchi method, the initial parameters of the metaheuristic algorithms are adjusted, and then, 15 sample problems are designed in larger sizes. To avoid generating random data, five problems were equally designed, and the averages of objective functions and metrics of met heuristic algorithms (number of efficient solutions, maximum expansion index, spacing index and computational time) were analyzed as the basis of evaluation and comparison. Therefore, using all the indicators and results of the NSGA II algorithm is recommended. Originality/value In this research, a biobjective modeling approach is proposed to minimize the total costs of the supply chain network (construction costs, storage costs and product transportation costs between centers) and advertising costs and to minimize distribution and transportation scheduling across each level of the supply chain network.

Abstract:AbstractDue to the increased levels of uncertainty in the world today and the expansion of supply chain boundaries, companies have been observed trying to enhance supply chain resilience to deal with disruptions caused by severe disasters. There is, however, a new stimulus for the disorder, something quite similar to what has been witnessed recently. It is a new phenomenon called pandemics such as SARS, Ebola, and Coronaviruses. On the other hand, as a result of the imposition of economic sanctions, there is uncertainty in the decision-making parameters of the supply chains, creating difficulties for them. Iron is a raw material that affects both the industry and economy of a nation and can be turned into a closed-loop network. In the current research, using a multi-objective mathematical model, a closed-loop supply chain of steel is presented under the circumstances of the COVID-19 embargo and pandemic. Existing uncertainties are modelled with a robust optimization approach in an uncertain environment. As part of the analysis, appropriate strategies to increase chain resilience will be identified and evaluated. A case study of an active steel supply chain in Iran has been examined for model validation. This model optimizes final net profit, water, and energy use, emissions, and control of coronavirus emissions. In the present study, a three-objective mathematical model is determined and solved in small dimensions based on modified LP-metric and ε-constraint approaches. Further, based on MOPSO and NSGA-II meta-heuristic methods, the best solution was selected in large dimensions.

Abstract:Increasing competition among various companies has led supply chain managers to devise ways to reduce costs and production times. An important branch of the supply chain, namely the pharmaceutical supply chain network, which plays a significant role in people's lives, is considered in this paper. When it comes to human life, time and accuracy are the most important factors. In this paper, a multi-objective stochastic model is developed to reduce the time of delivering drugs to patients and minimize operating costs of the supply chain, considering congestion in production centers and scheduling jobs in flexible flow shop systems. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is also addressed in this research. Two multi-objective methods, LP-metric and goal attainment, are used to solve the proposed multi-objective model. Finally, to illustrate the performance of the proposed model, several numerical test problems from small to a large extent are solved with a detailed sensitivity analysis. Through analyzing the computational results, confliction among objective functions is analyzed. Moreover, it is concluded that LP-metric outperforms the goal attainment approach profoundly by comparing two solution approaches.

Abstract:The recent COVID-19 pandemic revealed that healthcare networks must have a flexible and effective structure. In this study, we develop a viable healthcare network design for a pandemic using a multi-stage stochastic approach. We propose a multi-level network that includes health centers, computed tomography scan centers, hospitals, and clinics. Patients have conditions to returning to normal life or quarantining at home. Three objectives are defined: maximizing the probability of patient recovery, minimizing the costs of all centers in the network, and minimizing the Coronavirus death rate. We investigate a real case study in Iran to demonstrate the model's applicability. Finally, we compare the healthcare supply chain network design in a pandemic with a normal situation to advise how the network can continue to remain viable.

Abstract:In the green supply chain approach, all the links that are put together to provide a product or service are considered, and strategic and operational decisions are made to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire chain. At the same time, the environmental effects should be minimized. In this research, a nonlinear mixed-integer multiobjective model is developed to design a green closed-loop supply chain for medical products. In this supply chain, the echelons include supplier, manufacturer, warehouse, and customer in the forward supply chain and collection centers, repair services, and disposal centers in the reverse supply chain. In the proposed model, four objectives of customer satisfaction, environmental effects, supply risk, and total costs of the supply chain were considered. The developed model is implemented in a supply chain of medical products, and after optimizing the model, the main results including location and capacity of facilities, planning for flexible production, purchase of materials, service and maintenance plan, product transfer, and inventory level are determined and analyzed.

Abstract:In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing the potential of online markets to sell products has become increasingly important for creating competitive advantages and ensuring the growth and survival of businesses. The pandemic has disrupted traditional business practices, and with social distancing measures in place, consumers have turned to online channels to meet their needs. As a result, businesses that have adapted quickly to online markets have been able to maintain their customer base and revenue streams. Thus, considering the potential of online markets is of utmost importance in the current pandemic situation. In this regard, the present research aims to provide a practical framework for creating a green and sustainable closed-loop supply chain network (SCLSCN), including the integration of online markets, to assist managers in making decisions that support economic, environmental, and social goals. Accordingly, a multi-objective mixed integer linear programming (MOMILP) optimization model was designed under uncertain demand and disruption caused by natural disasters in Iran's home appliance industry. The study also considered changes in the capacities of online and marketplace sales channels, revealing a significant reduction in costs at each stage. The results show that the increase in demand has a direct impact on the production level, warehousing, and transportation costs, leading to social impacts on the model. However, the current system cannot handle an increase in demand of more than 20%, requiring managers to make decisions to increase production capacity or build new factories. Thus, the study highlights the importance of considering online markets as a means to adapt to disruptions caused by the pandemic and maintain a competitive edge.

Optimization of Sustainable Supply Chain Network for Perishable Products

Abstract:In today's perishable products industry, the importance of sustainability as a critical consideration has significantly increased. This study focuses on the design of a sustainable perishable product supply chain network (SPPSCN), considering the factors of economics cost, environmental impacts, and social responsibility. The proposed model is a comprehensive production–location–inventory problem optimization framework that addresses multiple objectives, echelons, products, and periods. To solve this complex problem, we introduce three hybrid metaheuristic algorithms: bat algorithm (BA), shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA), and cuckoo search (CS) algorithm, all hybrid with variable neighbourhood search (VNS). Sensitivity to input parameters is accounted for using the Taguchi method to tune these parameters. Additionally, we evaluate and compare these approaches among themselves and benchmark their results against a reference method, a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA) with VNS. The quality of the Pareto frontier is evaluated by six metrics for test problems. The results highlight the superior performance of the bat algorithm with variable neighbourhood search. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the impact of key model parameters on the optimal objectives. It is observed that an increase in demand has a nearly linear effect on the corresponding objectives. Moreover, the impact of extending raw material shelf life and product shelf life on these objectives is limited to a certain range. Beyond a certain threshold, the influence becomes insignificant.

Abstract:We identified child-level predictors of responsiveness to 2 types of mathematics intervention (calculation and word problem) among second-grade children with mathematics difficulty. Participants were 250 children in 107 classrooms in 23 schools pretested on mathematics and general cognitive measures and posttested on mathematics measures. We randomly assigned classrooms to calculation intervention, word-problem intervention, or business-as-usual control. Intervention lasted 17 weeks. Path analyses indicated that scores on working memory and language comprehension assessments moderated responsiveness to calculation intervention. No moderators were identified for responsiveness to word-problem intervention. Across both intervention groups and the control group, attentive behavior predicted both outcomes. Initial calculation skill predicted the calculation outcome, and initial language comprehension predicted word-problem outcomes. These results indicate that screening for calculation intervention should include a focus on working memory, language comprehension, attentive behavior, and calculations. Screening for word-problem intervention should focus on attentive behavior and word problems.

Abstract:Wearing a mask or a face covering became mandatory in indoor public spaces to reduce the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The Ontario government (i.e., a province of Canada) encouraged medical supply producers to switch their operations to produce personal protective equipment (e.g., masks) during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, there are several uncertain parameters (e.g., operational costs, market demand, and capacity levels of facilities) affecting the performance of producers in a medical supplies market. In this study, we propose a flexible optimization model to configure a robust mask supply chain network under uncertainty. Furthermore, companies are supposed to undertake their operations based on sustainable manners, in compliance with provincial policy, in Ontario. Therefore, the proposed flexible optimization model is extended to a robust multi-objective model to investigate sustainable strategies in a mask supply chain network design problem. The applicability of this model is demonstrated for the Greater Toronto Area, Canada.

Abstract:During the global Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the exponential rise in Hazardous Medical Waste (HMW) due to increased demand for personal protective equipment and heightened medical requirements posed significant threats to public health. This study proposes an innovative approach using a reverse logistics supply chain network that comprehensively integrates sustainability factors (e.g., cost, working conditions, exposure risks, and environmental impact) to manage the risks associated with medical waste effectively amid the pandemic. This research focuses on employing a guideline-based allocation of medical waste to specific technologies, leveraging the Torabi-Hassini (TH), Lp-metric (Lebesgue metric), and Goal Attainment (GA) approaches and robust possibilistic programming to address uncertainties. A real-case study validates the proposed model, demonstrating its ability to balance multiple objectives by optimizing the flow among treatment centers and introducing new Temporary Treatment Centers (TTCs). Also, we analyze broad sensitivity through weights assigned to the objective functions to obtain Pareto solutions. The convexity of the Pareto front confirms the conflict among the objective functions. The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach specifies that the Lp-metric approach outperforms the others, and the TH approach is regarded as the second rank. The study's findings highlight the model's efficacy and provide crucial managerial insights for health organization administrators in efficiently managing the HMW supply chain network.

Abstract:The closed-loop supply chain considers conceptually the possibility of reverse logistics with the use of recycling, remanufacturing and disposal centers. This study contributes for the first time a green closed-loop supply chain framework for the ventilators, which are highly important in the case of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed model simulates a case study of Iranian medical ventilator production. The proposed model includes environmental sustainability to limit the carbon emissions as a constraint. A novel stochastic optimization model with strategic and tactical decision making is presented for this closed-loop supply chain network design problem. To make the proposed ventilator logistics network design more realistic, most of the parameters are considered to be uncertain, along with the normal probability distribution. Finally, to show the managerial dimensions under the COVID-19 pandemic for our proposed model, some sensitivity analyses are performed. Results confirm the high impact of carbon emissions and demand variations on the optimal solution in the case of COVID-19.

Many reports have declared the COVID-19 impediments to trading and global economic growth. This study aims to provide a mathematical model to support pharmaceutical supply chain planning during the COVID-19 epidemic. Additionally, it aims to offer new insights into hospital supply chain problems by unifying cold and non-cold chains and considering a wide range of pharmaceuticals and vaccines. This approach is unprecedented and includes an analysis of various pharmaceutical features such as temperature, shelf life, priority, and clustering. To propose a model for planning the pharmaceutical supply chains, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is used for a four-echelon supply chain design. This model aims to minimize the costs involved in the pharmaceutical supply chain by maintaining an acceptable service level. Also, this paper considers uncertainty as an intrinsic part of the problem and addresses it through the wait-and-see method. Furthermore, an unexplored unsupervised learning method in the realm of supply chain planning has been used to cluster the pharmaceuticals and the vaccines and its merits and drawbacks are proposed. A case of Tehran hospitals with real data has been used to show the model's capabilities, as well. Based on the obtained results, the proposed approach is able to reach the optimum service level in the COVID conditions while maintaining a reduced cost. The experiment illustrates that the hospitals' adjacency and emergency orders alleviated the service level significantly. The proposed MILP model has proven to be efficient in providing a practical intuition for decision-makers. The clustering technique reduced the size of the problem and the time required to solve the model considerably.
