Abstract:This work presents potential applications of low-cost fused deposition modeling 3D-printers to fabricate multiuse 3D-printed electrochemical cells for flow or batch measurements as well as the 3D-printing of electrochemical sensing platforms. Electrochemical cells and sensors were printed with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and conductive graphene-doped polylactic acid (G-PLA) filaments, respectively. The overall printing operation time and estimated cost per cell were 6 h and $ 6.00, respectively, while the sensors were printed within minutes (16 sensor strips of 1 × 2 cm in 10 min at a cost of $ 1.00 each sensor). The cell performance is demonstrated for the amperometric detection of tert-butylhydroquinone, dipyrone, dopamine and diclofenac by flow-injection analysis (FIA) and batch-injection analysis (BIA) using different working electrodes, including the proposed 3D-printed sensor, which presented comparable electroanalytical performance with other carbon-based electrodes (LOD of 0.1 μmol L-1 for dopamine). Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy of the 3D-printed sensor indicated the presence of graphene nanoribbons within the polymeric matrix. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and heterogeneous electron transfer constants (k0) for the redox probe Ru(NH3)6+3 revealed that a glassy-carbon electrode presented faster electron transfer rates than the 3D-printed sensor; however, the latter presented lower LOD values for dopamine and catechol probably due to oxygenated functional groups at the G-PLA surface.
Recycling 3D Printed Residues for the Development of Disposable Paper-Based Electrochemical Sensors

Abstract:Here, we propose a recyclable approach using acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) residues from additive manufacturing in combination with low-cost and accessible graphite flakes as a novel and potential mixture for creating a conductive paste. The graphite particles were successfully incorporated in the recycled thermoplastic composite when solubilized with acetone and the mixture demonstrated greater adherence to different substrates, among which cellulose-based material made possible the construction of a paper-based electrochemical sensor (PES). The morphological, structural, and electrochemical characterizations of the recycled electrode material were demonstrated to be similar to those of the traditional carbon-based surfaces. Faradaic responses based on redox probe activity ([Fe(CN)6]3-/4-) exhibited well-defined peak currents and diffusional mass transfer as a quasi-reversible system (96 ± 5 mV) with a fast heterogeneous rate constant value of 2 × 10-3 cm s-1. To improve the electrode electrochemical properties, both the PES and the classical 3D-printed electrode surfaces were modified with a combination of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene oxide (GO), and copper. Both electrode surfaces demonstrated the suitable oxidation of nitrite at 0.6 and 0.5 V vs Ag, respectively. The calculated analytical sensitivities for PES and 3D-printed electrodes were 0.005 and 0.002 μA/(μmol L-1), respectively. The proposed PES was applied for the indirect amperometric analysis of S-nitroso-cysteine (CysNO) in serum samples via nitrite quantitation, demonstrating a limit of detection of 4.1 μmol L-1, with statistically similar values when compared to quantitative analysis of the same samples by spectrophotometry (paired t test, 95% confidence limit). The evaluated electroanalytical approach exhibited linear behavior for nitrite in the concentration range between 10 and 125 μmol L-1, which is suitable for realizing clinical diagnosis involving Parkinson's disease, for example. This proof of concept shows the great promise of this recyclable strategy combining ABS residues and conductive particles in the context of green chemical protocols for constructing disposable sensors.

Abstract:3D printing technology can produce complex objects directly from computer aided digital designs. The technology has traditionally been used by large companies to produce fit and form concept prototypes ('rapid prototyping') before production. In recent years however there has been a move to adopt the technology as full-scale manufacturing solution. The advent of low-cost, desktop 3D printers such as the RepRap and Fab@Home has meant a wider user base are now able to have access to desktop manufacturing platforms enabling them to produce highly customised products for personal use and sale. This uptake in usage has been coupled with a demand for printing technology and materials able to print functional elements such as electronic sensors. Here we present formulation of a simple conductive thermoplastic composite we term 'carbomorph' and demonstrate how it can be used in an unmodified low-cost 3D printer to print electronic sensors able to sense mechanical flexing and capacitance changes. We show how this capability can be used to produce custom sensing devices and user interface devices along with printed objects with embedded sensing capability. This advance in low-cost 3D printing with offer a new paradigm in the 3D printing field with printed sensors and electronics embedded inside 3D printed objects in a single build process without requiring complex or expensive materials incorporating additives such as carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:The automated detection and removal of spatial conflicts remains unsolved in map generalization. There are many methods aiming at this question, but it is still an open question. Several impacts, such as the characteristic of spatial conflict, spatial context and others, should be considered in the process. Based on the idea of causes classification and spatial competition a comprehensive method is presented to detect conflicts by delaunay triangulation. After conflict detection, a hierarchical classification of conflict is constructed. Corresponding operator or model for each kind of conflict is proposed. Results of this new method obtained on real data are discussed.
Manufactured Flexible Electrodes for Dopamine Detection: Integration of Conducting Polymer in 3D‐Printed Polylactic Acid

Abstract:Flexible electrochemical sensors based on electroactive materials have emerged as powerful analytical tools for biomedical applications requiring bioanalytes detection. Within this context, 3D printing is a remarkable technology for developing electrochemical devices, due to no design constraints, waste minimization, and batch manufacturing with high reproducibility. However, the fabrication of 3D printed electrodes is still limited by the in‐house fabrication of conductive filaments, which requires the mixture of the electroactive material with melted of thermoplastic polymer (e.g., polylactic acid, PLA). Herein, a simple approach is presented for preparing electrochemical dopamine (DA) biosensors. Specifically, the surface of 3D‐printed PLA specimens, which exhibit an elastic modulus and a tensile strength of 3.7 ± 0.3 GPa and 47 ± 1 MPa, respectively, is activated applying a 0.5 m NaOH solution for 30 min and, subsequently, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) is polymerized in situ using aqueous solvent. The detection of DA with the produced sensors has been demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. In summary, the obtained results reflect that low‐cost electrochemical sensors, which are widely used in medicine and biotechnology, can be rapidly fabricated using the proposed approach that, although based on additive manufacturing, does not require the preparation of conductive filaments.

Abstract:In recent research, 3D printing has become a powerful technique and has been applied in the last few years to carbon-based materials. A new generation of 3D-printed electrodes, more affordable and easier to obtain due to rapid prototyping techniques, has emerged. We propose a customizable fabrication process for flexible (and rigid) carbon-based biosensors, from biosensor design to printable conductive inks. The electrochemical biosensors were obtained on a 50 μm Kapton® (polyimide) substrate and transferred to a 500 μm PDMS substrate, using a 3D-extrusion-based printing method. The main features of our fabrication process consist of short-time customization implementation, fast small-to-medium batch production, ease of electrochemical spectroscopy measurements, and very good resolution for an extrusion-based printing method (100 μm). The sensors were designed for future integration into a smart wound dressing for wound monitoring and other biomedical applications. We increased their sensibility with electro-deposited gold nanoparticles. To assess the biosensors’ functionality, we performed surface functionalization with specific anti-N-protein antibodies for SARS-CoV 2 virus, with promising preliminary results.

Abstract:The use of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and other growth regulating chemicals as selective herbicides for weed control in crop fields has increased rapidly in the last three years. 2,4-D, particularly, has been advocated for selective control of broad-leaf weeds in grasses, including cereals. The herbicide may, however, injure the crop under certain developmental or climatic conditions. Varietal differences also may account for some of the variable effects reported for corn. In general, the cooperative reports from several experiment stations (?) indicate that applications of 2,4-D to foliage of corn in the early stages of growth may reduce yields. Of the cereal crops, corn seemed the most sensitive. Bakke and Sylwester (2) have stated that corn may be damaged if sprayed before the ears have reached the milk stage. Pre-treatment of the soil with 2,4-D resulted in a stimulation of corn growth in experiments conducted by Taylor (11). Evidence that inbred lines and hybrids may differ in percentage of affected seedlings when pre-emergence treatments of 2,4-D were made to the soil has been presented by Anderson and Wolf (i). Pridham (10) reported that the seedlings of red kidney beans from parents sprayed with 2,4-D during the ripening of pods showed characteristic 2,4-D injury. Grigsby (5) found that pollen production and floral development of ragweed were reduced or inhibited when sprayed with several of the new herbicidal compounds. According to the cooperative reports of the North Central Weed Control Conference (6), test weight and germination of grain from treated oats, barley, or wheat differed little from untreated checks except in cases where plants showed severe injury as a result of spraying. Marth et al. (9) reported that seed stalks and seed heads developed on 2,4-D treated timothy seemed unaffected, and that the germination of seed developed on plots treated in various ways was unaffected. Application of 2,4-D to the soil had no adverse effects on the viability of Kentucky bluegrass seed, but a measurable effect was found in reducing seed dormancy (8). Abstract:Sensors detect a change in a physical parameter around them and convert it to a measurable signal that can be construed and analyzed for further applications such as automation, wearable devices, human-machine interfaces, and medical devices, among countless other applications. For example, sensors in the biomedical field help to detect the physiological course of a body. Conventionally sensors are produced using photolithography and screen printing. These conventional methods are limited by the complexity and flexibility in manufacturing the sensors. But, additive manufacturing presents a flexible option to produce the sensors and integrate them into structures as a single unit. This paper shows an extrusion-based 3D printing method to print sensors using conductive filaments. A comb-shaped capacitive sensor was 3D printed using commercially available conductive filament on a 3D printed PLA substrate. Printing two different materials with different properties always remains a challenge in FDM, so this paper also explains the stepwise process for printing a conductive composite material along with a thermoplastic. Further experimental characterization of the filament and sensor was also performed. This paper compares the electrical properties of the feedstock and 3D printed parts to understand the impact of extrusion on the material. A custom-made experimental setup was designed to characterize the sensor. One of the challenges is the low melting point of 3D printed parts, limiting their use to low-power applications. However, most biomedical sensing applications are low power, so these sensors remain suitable for such applications. Hence, in the end, the authors have explored the viability of the integration of these 3D printed sensors with medical implants to manufacture smart biomedical devices.
3D-printed electrodes using graphite/carbon nitride/polylactic acid composite material: A greener platform for detection of amaranth dye in food samples

Abstract:The production of sustainable materials with properties aimed at the additive manufacturing of electrochemical sensors has gained prestige in the scientific scenario. Here, a novel lab-made composite material using graphite (G) and carbon nitride (C3N4) embedded into polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer is proposed to produce 3D-printed electrodes. PLA offers printability and mechanical stability in this composition, while G and C3N4 provide electrical properties and electrocatalytic sites, respectively. Characterizations by Raman and infrared spectroscopies and Energy Dispersive X-rays indicated that the G/C3N4/PLA composite was successfully obtained, while electron microscopy images revealed non-homogeneous rough surfaces. Better electrochemical properties were achieved when the G/C3N4/PLA proportion (35:5:60) was used. As a proof of concept, amaranth (AMR), a synthetic dye, was selected as an analyte, and a fast method using square wave voltammetry was developed. Utilizing the 3D-printed G/C3N4/PLA electrode, a more comprehensive linear range (0.2 to 4.2 μmol/L), a 5-fold increase in sensitivity (9.83 μmol-1 L μA), and better limits of detection (LOD = 0.06 μmol/L) and quantification (LOQ = 0.18 μmol/L) were achieved compared to the G/PLA electrode. Samples of jelly, popsicles, isotonic drinks, and food flavoring samples were analyzed, and similar results to those obtained by UV-vis spectrometry confirmed the method's reliability. Therefore, the described sensor is a simple, cost-effective alternative for assessing AMR in routine food analysis.

Abstract:The technology of 3D printing has emerged as a potent tool for the preparation of 3D-printed electrode. Using commercial graphene/polylactic acid (PLA) composite filaments as printed materials, fused deposition modeling as 3D-printed technique, 3D printed electrodes (3DEs) were created in this work. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and the composites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were used to modify the activated 3DEs for constructing a novel electrode(SACP@Au@3DE), and in this work chlorogenic acid (CGA) was regarded as a probe for testing the performance of SACP@Au@3DE. The surface physicochemical properties of the prepared 3DEs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical properties of the prepared 3DEs were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The constructed SACP@Au@3DE can be used to determine CGA at concentrations ranging from 10 to 400 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.13 μM. Ultimately, the SACP@Au@3DE sensor was used for CGA detection in coffee powder sample to explore the potential for real sample analysis. This work opens the novel avenue of using conductive polymer modified 3D-printed electrode in the field of sensor.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensing techniques rely on redox reactions taking place at the electrode surface. The configuration of this surface is of the utmost importance in the advancement of electrochemical sensors. The majority of previous electrode manufacturing methods, including 3D printing have produced electrodes with flat surfaces. There is a distinct potential for 3D printing to create intricate and distinctive electrode surface shapes. In the proposed work, 3D printed carbon black polylactic acid electrodes with nine different surface morphologies were made. These were compared to a flat surface electrode. To evaluate the performance of the electrodes, measurements were conducted in three different redox probes (ferrocene methanol, ferricyanide, and dopamine). Our findings highlighted that when electrodes were normalised for the geometric surface area of the electrode, the surface pattern of the electrode surface can impact the observed current and electron transfer kinetics. Electrodes that had a dome and flag pattern on the electrode surface showed the highest oxidation currents and had lower values for the difference between the anodic and cathodic peak current (ΔE). However, designs with rings had lower current values and higher ΔE values. These differences are most likely due to variations in the accessibility of conductive sites on the electrode surface due to the varying surface roughness of different patterned designs. Our findings highlight that when making electrodes using 3D printing, surface patterning of the electrode surface can be used as an effective approach to enhance the performance of the sensor for varying applications.

Abstract:Fused filament fabrication (FFF), the printing of parts through the deposition of layers of melted thermoplastic, is one of the most widely used 3D printing processes due to its ease of use, low cost and accessibility. In this work, integration of 3D printed sensors and interconnect between embedded components into a printed part is demonstrated in an FFF process for the first time. The use of printed active materials for sensing allows interactivity with the end user through mechanisms like touch and temperature. Through dual extrusion in a low cost commercial printer, printing of both a conductive thermoplastic composite and a non-conducting filament are combined to create complex patterns. The piezoresistive and thermally responsive properties of the thermoplastic composite are used to create several different sensor modalities including a piezoresistive strain sensor, a contact switch and a resistive temperature sensor. A heated insertion technique is then developed for embedding of electrical components. The conductive thermoplastic is also used to incorporate a 3D printed circuit board in the same part, including in-line embedding within the body of the part during the printing process. The sensor performance and component embedding properties are characterized, and the process is used to print systems including relaxation oscillators and op-amp interface circuits for sensor monitoring.

Exploring the Mechanical Durability and Electroanalytical Performance of 3D-Printed Multi-Material Sensors for Rapid On-Site Screening of Nimesulide in Industrial Sewage

Abstract:This work demonstrates the fabrication, mechano-electric, and electrochemical characterisation of a sustainable, fully 3D-printed electrochemical cell (3DPEC) for electroanalytical applications in static and flow conditions. The two-electrode cell comprises carbon black (CB)-filled polylactic acid (PLA) electrodes sealed within insulating PLA walls. The failure behaviour and electric resistance profiles of additive-manufactured multi-material joints with different geometries subjected to tensile load were investigated to explore the possible effect of flow pressure stresses on sensor accuracy. The digital imaging correlation technique was applied to determine the strain distribution during the test. A practical and straightforward route for 3DPEC post-processing treatment was proposed to enhance the electrochemically active surface area (ESA). Finally, we present a proof-of-concept determination of nimesulide, an anti-inflammatory drug, directly in industrial sewage, with a detection limit of 1 nM. The presented approach demonstrates the capability of low-cost, on-demand, and fully customisable 3D-printed cells for rapid environmental screening with high sensitivity.

Abstract:This work developed a conductive ink composed of carbonaceous material for printing electrochemical sensors. The optimized ink comprises graphite, carbon black, and nail polish, respectively (35.3:11.7:53%), as well as acetone as a solvent. The proportion was optimized with consideration of the binder’s solubilization, the ink’s suitability for the screen-printing process, and lower electrical resistance. The materials used, and the resulting ink, were analyzed by way of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The charge transfer resistance (Rct) obtained was 0.348 kΩ. The conductive ink was used to print an electrode on a PET substrate, and a flexible and disposable electrode was obtained. The electroactive area obtained was 13.7 cm2, which was calculated by the Randles-Sevcik equation. The applicability of the device was demonstrated with a redox probe, providing a sensitivity of 0.02 μ A L mmol−1. The conductive ink has adequate homogeneity for producing electrodes using the screen-printing technique, with a low estimated production cost of $ 0.09 mL−1.
Recovery of Dilated Cardiomyopathies in Infants and Children Using Left Ventricular Assist Devices

Abstract:Most infants and children implanted with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are bridged to cardiac transplantation. Prioritizing recovery may decrease this trend. Patients were treated with LVAD ventricular decompression, medical heart failure therapy, and bolus therapy with a beta-agonist before weaning trials. Devices were removed if adequate function was observed. Eleven patients with a mean age of 1.7 years presented for LVAD implantation. The mean Z score for left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDD) was +5.5 (+1.6 to +7.3), and the mean fractional shortening was 9% (5%–14%). They were on maximal medical therapy and inotropic support. Duration of device support ranged from 6 to 22 days (mean: 13 days). There were three deaths, one from preimplant anoxic brain damage and two from thromboembolism. Eight patients (73%) recovered, were explanted, and are alive 0.6–6 years with hearts that have a mean Z score for LVEDD of 1.0 (0.09–3.7) and fractional shortening of 23%–36%. Left ventricular assist device decompression of dilated left ventricles in infants and children led to long-term survival in 73%. Ventricular size was significantly reduced and contractility significantly increased. None of these patients required transplantation.

Abstract:3D-printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has enabled the production of dynamically shaped objects often customized for specific applications. Many applications, such as sensors in the aerospace industry, have demanding mass and volume requirements or need to work in challenging environments that necessitate electronics to be protected. The combination of 3D-printing and electronics could open up new applications not feasible previously. We propose a novel manufacturing method capable of integrating a complex electric circuit consisting of several, commonly available electronic components with a 3D-printed object. This is achieved using a commercial printer and atomic layer deposition for coating. Various printable polymers and coatings were tested to identify two polymers that could be printed into one object, allowing selective conductivity when coated with conductive coating Selective conductivity is achieved when one polymer exhibits poorer and more non-continuous coating growth compared to the other. The 3D-printed object's three-dimensional shape and details were used to create the electrical circuit and aid in achieving selective conductivity. A demonstration consisting of an ultraviolet light (UV) sensor, based on an existing traditional circuit board, was replicated using this method. The 3D-printed circuit was then tested by comparing its output with that of the original when placed under the same UV-light source. The novel circuit output closely followed the original. The presented method can combine an electric circuit with the dynamic capabilities of a 3D-printer, allowing for savings in existing applications as well as new applications.

Abstract:3D printing is a unique technology that potentially offers a high degree of freedom for the customization of practical products that incorporate electrical components, such as sensors in wearable applications. The availability of inexpensive, reliable, electrically conductive material will be indispensable in the fabrication of such circuits and sensors before the full potential of 3D printing for customized products incorporating electrical elements can be realized. To date, 3D printable conductive filaments with sufficiently high conductivities to fabricate practical circuits remain lacking for fused deposition modeling. Herein, we describe the fabrication, characterization, stress testing, and application of a low-cost thermoplastic conductive composite that has been processed into filament form for 3D printing. Results from stress tests show that the electrical properties of our composites are stable under exposure to sunlight over 1 month and there was no observable degradation in electrical resistance when used at 12V (AC) for 7 days. Practical circuits were 3D printed using filaments with resistivity of ∼5×10−3 Ωm, and powered up with a 9V battery. A plastic thermometer and a flex sensor were prototyped to illustrate the potential of this material for sensing applications, for example, in customized wearables.

Mixed Graphite/Carbon Black Recycled PLA Conductive Additive Manufacturing Filament for the Electrochemical Detection of Oxalate

Abstract:Mixing of graphite and carbon black (CB) alongside recycled poly(lactic acid) and castor oil to create an electrically conductive additive manufacturing filament without the use of solvents is reported herein. The additively manufactured electrodes (AMEs) were electrochemically benchmarked against a commercial conductive filament and a bespoke filament utilizing only CB. The graphite/CB produced a heterogeneous rate constant, k0, of 1.26 (±0.23) × 10-3 cm s-1 and resistance of only 155 ± 15 Ω, compared to 0.30 (±0.03) × 10-3 cm s-1 and 768 ± 96 Ω for the commercial AME. Including graphite within the filament reduced the cost of printing each AME from £0.09, with the CB-only filament, to £0.05. The additive manufacturing filament was successfully used to create an electroanalytical sensing platform for the detection of oxalate within a linear range of 10-500 μM, achieving a sensitivity of 0.0196 μA/μM, LOD of 5.7 μM and LOQ of 18.8 μM was obtained. Additionally, the cell was tested toward the detection of oxalate within a spiked synthetic urine sample, obtaining recoveries of 104%. This work highlights how, using mixed material composites, excellent electrochemical performance can be obtained at a reduced material cost, while also greatly improving the sustainability of the system.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, Ahead of Print. Some studies have been reported in the recent past on smart sensors for non-enzymatic glucose sensing applications. Nevertheless, little has been reported on the in-house development of low-cost 3D printed smart biomedical sensors with tunable sensitivity. This study reports investigations on the in-house, low-cost fabrication of polyvinyl difluoride (PVDF) matrix-based 3D printed tunable non-enzymatic glucose sensors. For fabrication of smart sensors, Cu (4%) doped ZnO nanoparticles have been reinforced (in different weight proportions (wt%) in PVDF matrix through melt processing. The results suggest that 4% reinforcement (of 4% Cu doped-ZnO), processed at 190°C, 40 rpm screw speed on twin screw extrusion (TSE) followed by post heat treatment (HT) at 60°C are the best settings for fabrication of feedstock filaments (for bio-sensor 3D printing). Finally, a PVDF-based sensor to support bioreceptor and transducer requirements has been successfully prepared (with 4D properties (i.e. one-way programing feature), optical, morphological, bond strength, piezoelectric and mechanical characteristics). The 3D printed electro-active sensor, (of selected composition) resulted in acceptable mechanical, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties (modulus of toughness (MoT) 1.46 MPa, Young's modulus (YM) 1221.7 MPa, piezoelectric coefficient 19.3pC/N and dielectric constant 6.5). The results have been supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), current-voltage-resistance (I-V-R), and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) analysis.
