Abstract:A novel wearable health monitoring system with multi-parameters and its applications for long term monitoring are presented in this paper. The system provides continuous monitoring of the user's electrocardiogram (ECG), respiratory status and activity, as well as the local temperature. A belt-type data acquisition and communication module worn around the chest includes ECG and respiratory module ADS1292R, six axis motion sensor MPU6050, high precision digital temperature sensor Tsic506 and bluetooth 4.0 module CC2541. The collected data is sent to the mobile device via bluetooth and the mobile device gives a heart health index of measuring the body status which includes heart rate, QRS wave, and ST segment. A remote interactive way is constructed by the mobile device communicating with the customer management center via WIFI.

Abstract:Emotion recognition remains an intricate task at the crossroads of psychology and artificial intelligence, necessitating real-time, accurate discernment of implicit emotional states. Here, we introduce a pioneering wearable dual-modal device, synergizing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) to meet this demand. The first-of-its-kind fNIRS-EEG ensemble exploits a temporal convolutional network (TC-ResNet) that takes 24 fNIRS and 16 EEG channels as input for the extraction and recognition of emotional features. Our system has many advantages including its portability, battery efficiency, wireless capabilities, and scalable architecture. It offers a real-time visual interface for the observation of cerebral electrical and hemodynamic changes, tailored for a variety of real-world scenarios. Our approach is a comprehensive emotional detection strategy, with new designs in system architecture and deployment and improvement in signal processing and interpretation. We examine the interplay of emotions and physiological responses to elucidate the cognitive processes of emotion regulation. An extensive evaluation of 30 subjects under four emotion induction protocols demonstrates our bimodal system's excellence in detecting emotions, with an impressive classification accuracy of 99.81% and its ability to reveal the interconnection between fNIRS and EEG signals. Compared with the latest unimodal identification methods, our bimodal approach shows significant accuracy gains of 0.24% for EEG and 8.37% for fNIRS. Moreover, our proposed TC-ResNet-driven temporal convolutional fusion technique outperforms conventional EEG-fNIRS fusion methods, improving the recognition accuracy from 0.7% to 32.98%. This research presents a groundbreaking advancement in affective computing that combines biological engineering and artificial intelligence. Our integrated solution facilitates nuanced and responsive affective intelligence in practical applications, with far-reaching impacts on personalized healthcare, education, and human–computer interaction paradigms.

Abstract:Monitoring physiological changes [e.g., heart rate (HR), respiration, and HR variability (HRV)] is important for measuring human emotions. Physiological responses are more reliable and harder to alter compared to explicit behaviors (such as facial expressions and speech), but they require special contact sensors to obtain. Research in the last decade has shown that photoplethysmography (PPG) signals can be remotely measured (rPPG) from facial videos under ambient light, from which physiological changes can be extracted. This promising finding has attracted much interest from researchers, and the field of rPPG measurement has been growing fast. In this article, we review current progress on intelligent signal processing approaches for rPPG measurement, including earlier works on unsupervised approaches and recently proposed supervised models, benchmark data sets, and performance evaluation. We also review studies on rPPG-based affective applications and compare them with other affective computing modalities. We conclude this article by emphasizing the current main challenges and highlighting future directions.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of MagWear, a novel biomagnetism-based system that can accurately and inclusively monitor the heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure of users. MagWear's contributions are twofold. Firstly, we build a mathematical model that characterizes the magnetic coupling effect of blood flow under the influence of an external magnetic field. This model uncovers the variations in accuracy when monitoring vital signs among individuals. Secondly, leveraging insights derived from this mathematical model, we present a software-hardware co-design that effectively handles the impact of human diversity on the performance of vital sign monitoring, pushing this generic solution one big step closer to real adoptions. Following IRB protocols, our extensive experiments involving 30 volunteers demonstrate that MagWear achieves high monitoring accuracy with a mean percentage error (MPE) of 1.55% for heart rate (HR), 1.79% for respiration rate (RR), 3.35% for systolic blood pressure (SBP), and 3.89% for diastolic blood pressure (DBP). MagWear can also be extended to detect anemia and blood oxygen saturation, which is also our ongoing work. Code and hardware schematics can be found at: https://github.com/tanwork/MagWear .

Abstract:Bio-signals are being increasingly used for the assessment of pathophysiological conditions including pain, stress, fatigue, and anxiety. For some approaches, a single signal is not sufficient to provide a comprehensive diagnosis; however, there is a growing consensus that multimodal approaches allow higher sensitivity and specificity. For instance, in visceral pain subjects, the autonomic activation can be inferred using electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate variability derived from the electrocardiogram (ECG), but including the muscle activation detected from the surface electromyogram (sEMG) can better differentiate the disease that causes the pain. There is no wearable device commercially capable of collecting these three signals simultaneously. This paper presents the validation of a novel multimodal low profile wearable data acquisition device for the simultaneous collection of EDA, ECG, and sEMG signals. The device was validated by comparing its performance to laboratory-scale reference devices. N = 20 healthy subjects were recruited to participate in a four-stage study that exposed them to an array of cognitive, orthostatic, and muscular stimuli, ensuring the device is sensitive to a range of stressors. Time and frequency domain analyses for all three signals showed significant similarities between our device and the reference devices. Correlation of sEMG metrics ranged from 0.81 to 0.95 and EDA/ECG metrics showed few instances of significant difference in trends between our device and the references. With only minor observed differences, we demonstrated the ability of our device to collect EDA, sEMG, and ECG signals. This device will enable future practical and impactful advances in the field of chronic pain and stress measurement and can confidently be implemented in related studies.

Abstract:There is an increasing consensus among re- searchers that making a computer emotionally intelligent with the ability to decode human affective states would allow a more meaningful and natural way of human-computer interactions (HCIs). One unobtrusive and non-invasive way of recognizing human affective states entails the exploration of how physiological signals vary under different emotional experiences. In particular, this paper explores the correlation between autonomically-mediated changes in multimodal body signals and discrete emotional states. In order to fully exploit the information in each modality, we have provided an innovative classification approach for three specific physiological signals including Electromyogram (EMG), Blood Volume Pressure (BVP) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). These signals are analyzed as inputs to an emotion recognition paradigm based on fusion of a series of weak learners. Our proposed classification approach showed 88.1% recognition accuracy, which outperformed the conventional Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier with 17% accuracy improvement. Furthermore, in order to avoid information redundancy and the resultant over-fitting, a feature reduction method is proposed based on a correlation analysis to optimize the number of features required for training and validating each weak learner. Results showed that despite the feature space dimensionality reduction from 27 to 18 features, our methodology preserved the recognition accuracy of about 85.0%. This reduction in complexity will get us one step closer towards embedding this human emotion encoder in the wireless and wearable HCI platforms.

A Wearable Signal Acquisition System for Physiological Signs Including Throat PPG.

Abstract:This paper presents a wearable signal acquisition system, which can measure physiological signs, i.e., electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG). The system is comprised of two parts: (1) an ECG sensor implemented in the master board which will be mounted on the chest and, (2) a combined PPG and motion sensor implemented in the slave board which will be worn around the neck area. The single-lead ECG, the single-channel PPG, and the 3-channel accelerometer signals are all sampled at 200Hz, and transmitted to an Android app through Bluetooth® low energy (BLE) in real time. The system is powered by a 3.7V lithium polymer battery, with an average current consumption of 10mA. In addition to giving an overview of the system design and implementation decisions, we summarize the finding of a PPG test region study based on our system, which indicates that the highest PPG stability is in the mid-throat region over the thyroid gland, and the PPG in the lower throat region is an excellent choice for respiration rate extraction with an average error less than 5%. With the assistance of the motion sensor, an obvious swallow motion can also be easily identified.

Abstract:The EmoWear dataset provides a bridge to explore Emotion Recognition (ER) via Seismocardiography (SCG), the measurement of small cardio-respiratory induced vibrations on the chest wall through Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). We recorded Accelerometer (ACC), Gyroscope (GYRO), Electrocardiography (ECG), Blood Volume Pulse (BVP), Respiration (RSP), Electrodermal Activity (EDA), and Skin Temperature (SKT) data from 49 participants who watched validated emotionally stimulating video clips. They self-assessed their emotional valence, arousal, and dominance, as well as extra questions about the video clips. Also, we asked the participants to walk, talk, and drink, so that researchers can detect gait, voice, and swallowing using the same IMU. We demonstrate the effectiveness of emotion stimulation with statistical methods and verify the quality of the collected signals through signal-to-noise ratio and correlation analysis. EmoWear can be used for ER via SCG, ER during gait, multi-modal ER, and the study of IMUs for context-awareness. Targeted contextual information include emotions, gait, voice activity, and drinking, all having the potential to be sensed via a single IMU.

Abstract:Automatic emotion recognition is a major topic in the area of human--robot interaction. This paper presents an emotion recognition system based on physiological signals. Emotion induction experiments which induced joy, sadness, anger, and pleasure were conducted on 11 subjects. The subjects’ electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiration (RSP) signals were recorded simultaneously by a physiological monitoring device based on wearable sensors. Compared to the non-wearable physiological monitoring devices often used in other emotion recognition systems, the wearable physiological monitoring device does not restrict the subjects’ movement. From the acquired physiological signals, one hundred and forty-five signal features were extracted. A feature selection method based on genetic algorithm was developed to minimize errors resulting from useless signal features as well as reduce computation complexity. To recognize emotions from the selected physiological signal features, a support vector machine (SVM) method was applied, which achieved a recognition accuracy of 81.82, 63.64, 54.55, and 30.00 % for joy, sadness, anger, and pleasure, respectively. The results showed that it is feasible to recognize emotions from physiological signals.

Abstract:The study of wearable systems based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals has attracted widespread attention and plays an important role in human–computer interaction, physiological state monitoring, and other fields. Traditional sEMG signal acquisition systems are primarily targeted at body parts that are not in line with daily wearing habits, such as the arms, legs, and face. In addition, some systems rely on wired connections, which impacts their flexibility and user-friendliness. This paper presents a novel wrist-worn system with four sEMG acquisition channels and a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) greater than 120 dB. The circuit has an overall gain of 2492 V/V and a bandwidth of 15~500 Hz. It is fabricated using flexible circuit technologies and is encapsulated in a soft skin-friendly silicone gel. The system acquires sEMG signals at a sampling rate of over 2000 Hz with a 16-bit resolution and transmits data to a smart device via low-power Bluetooth. Muscle fatigue detection and four-class gesture recognition experiments (accuracy greater than 95%) were conducted to validate its practicality. The system has potential applications in natural and intuitive human–computer interaction and physiological state monitoring.

Abstract:Humans use a host of signals to infer the emotional state of others. In general, computer systems that leverage signals from multiple modalities will be more robust and accurate in the same task. We present a multimodal affect and context sensing platform. The system is composed of video, audio and application analysis pipelines that leverage ubiquitous sensors (camera and microphone) to log and broadcast emotion data in real-time. The platform is designed to enable easy prototyping of novel computer interfaces that sense, respond and adapt to human emotion. This paper describes the different audio, visual and application processing components and explains how the data is stored and/or broadcast for other applications to consume. We hope that this platform helps advance the state-of-the-art in affective computing by enabling development of novel human-computer interfaces.

Abstract:The paper presents the emteqPROtm system, which uses a face-mounted multi-sensor mask to measure the facial physiological responses, facial muscle activations, and motions from the user. These responses are then analyzed by machine learning algorithms to recognize and better understand the user's affective state and context, i.e., emotions, arousal, valence, stress response, activities, etc. The system can work by itself, as an open mask, or can be combined with a commercial Virtual Reality head mounted display. It comprises 3 sensor modalities: a 7-contact f-EMG sensor, a PPG sensor, and a 3-axis IMU, enabling it to measure the affective state of the user in real time. We will demonstrate how the system is used in practice in a Virtual Reality environment. This newly developed technology has the potential to significantly improve the way we collect data, design experiences, and interact within Virtual, Mixed and Augmented Realities.

Abstract:In recent years, due to increased attention of individual physical health condition, the demand on portable multi-vital signs monitoring devices has shown an explosive growth. This work designed a portable, multi-vital signs monitoring system, consisting of chest unit and wrist unit, with size of 32 mm x 32 mm and diameter of 30 mm, respectively. The designed system is capable of transmitting measured electrocardiograph (ECG), pulse wave and body temperature signal to the mobile devices wirelessly by Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technique. The heart rate, pulse oximetry (SpO(2)) and respiratory rate are extracted through time domain algorithm. The chest and wrist units can continuously monitor body vital signs for more than 12 and 24 hours, respectively. Besides, the experiment results reveal that the chest unit is able to monitor patients with heart rate abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation and premature beats. The typical heart diseases can be detected in real-time. Meanwhile, the wrist unit clearly detects the changes of the physical parameters of the subjects under different physiological conditions. The accuracy of the designed system is consistent with that of the commercial medical instrument counterpart, with further advantages of compact, portable and patient-friendly natures.

Abstract:We present a novel multi-modal bio-sensing platform capable of integrating multiple data streams for use in real-time applications. The system is composed of a central compute module and a companion headset. The compute node collects, time-stamps and transmits the data while also providing an interface for a wide range of sensors including electroencephalogram, photoplethysmogram, electrocardiogram, and eye gaze among others. The companion headset contains the gaze tracking cameras. By integrating many of the measurements systems into an accessible package, we are able to explore previously unanswerable questions ranging from open-environment interactions to emotional response studies. Though some of the integrated sensors are designed from the ground-up to fit into a compact form factor, we validate the accuracy of the sensors and find that they perform similarly to, and in some cases better than, alternatives.

Abstract:Emotion prediction is the field of study to understand human emotions. Existing methods focus on modalities like text, audio, facial expressions, etc., which could be private to the user. Emotion can be derived from the subject's psychological data as well. Various approaches that employ combinations of physiological sensors for emotion recognition have been proposed. Yet, not all sensors are simple to use and handy for individuals in their daily lives. Thus, we propose a system to predict user emotion using smartwatch sensors. We design a framework to collect ground truth in real-time utilizing a mix of English and regional language-based videos to invoke emotions in participants and collect the data. Further, we modeled the problem as binary classification due to the limited dataset size and experimented with multiple machine-learning models. We also did an ablation study to understand the impact of features including Heart Rate, Accelerometer, and Gyroscope sensor data on mood. From the experimental results, Multi-Layer Perceptron has shown a maximum accuracy of 93.75 percent for pleasant-unpleasant (high/low valence classification) moods.

Abstract:Emotion recognition is critical for promoting mental health, as too much negative emotions may cause mental illness, especially in the era of COVID-19. EEG is the dominating modality to study brain dynamics. However, most of the current EEG devices were designed for as much applications as possible with unnecessary electrodes for emotion recognition applications. In this article, a wearable and wireless EEG device with only two channels were specifically designed for emotion recognition. The device is minimized and could be embedded in a headband. Novel preprocessing algorithm to remove ocular artifacts, features selection, and optimization, comparison between the four machine learning methods were studied to demonstrate a high classification accuracy of emotion valence on 20 subjects. As our wearable EEG system achieved high accuracy with only two channels, it would broaden the application perspective of emotion recognition, and could be applied in outdoor environments or other scenarios.
