Abstract:Abstract New experimental vapor pressures in the range 407 K to 460 K and vaporization enthalpy of the ionic liquids (IL) N -alkyl- N -methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquids have been measured using quartz crystal microbalance. The absolute vapor pressures and vaporization enthalpies were compared with analogous pyrrolidinium-based ILs with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion. The evaluated difference in vaporization enthalpy of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions allowed for estimation of corresponding property for a wide set of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion. The results are relevant to chemical engineering calculations of processes involving ILs as reaction and separation media.

Abstract:The phase behavior and the ionic conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) of the N-alkyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium (PYR(xy)) cation and the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion are investigated upon addition of LiTFSI salt. We compare the case of two new ILs of the PYR(2y) cation (where 2 is ethyl and y is butyl or propyl) with that of the PYR(14) (where 1 is methyl and 4 is butyl). We find that the addition of LiTFSI increases the glass transition temperature, decreases the melting temperature and the heat of fusion and, in the ILs of the PYR(2y) family, suppresses crystallization. In the solid state, significant ionic conductivities are found, being as high as 10(-5) S cm(-1), strongly increasing with Li(+) concentration. The opposite trend is found in the liquid state, where the conductivity is on the order of 10(-3)-10(-2) S cm(-1) at room temperature. A T(g)-scaled Arrhenius plot shows that the liquid-state ionic conductivity in these systems is mainly governed by viscosity and that the fragility of the liquids is slightly influenced by the structural modifications on the cation.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are the safest solvent in various high-temperature applications due to their non-flammable properties. In order to obtain their thermal stability properties, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is extensively used to analyze the kinetics of the thermal decomposition process. This review summarizes the different kinetics analysis methods and finds the isoconversional methods are superior to the Arrhenius methods in calculating the activation energy, and two tools—the compensation effect and master plots—are suggested for the calculation of the pre-exponential factor. With both parameters, the maximum operating temperature (MOT) can be calculated to predict the thermal stability in long-term runnings. The collection of thermal stability data of ILs with divergent cations and anions shows the structure of cations such as alkyl side chains, functional groups, and alkyl substituents will affect the thermal stability, but their influence is less than that of anions. To develop ILs with superior thermal stability, dicationic ILs (DILs) are recommended, and typically, [C4(MIM)2][NTf2]2 has a decomposition temperature as high as 468.1 °C. For the convenience of application, thermal stability on the decomposition temperature and thermal decomposition activation energy of 130 ILs are summarized at the end of this manuscript.

Thiazolium-based ionic liquids: Synthesis, characterization and physicochemical properties

Abstract:Thiazolium salts are structurally analogous to the most common imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs), and are supposed to be a new class of ILs. However, there are up to now only a few reports and absence of systematic study on thiazolium ILs. In this work, several thiazolium-based ILs were prepared, characterized and comparatively studied. Most of the thiazolium ILs are liquid at room temperature, with melting points below 43.0 °C. Good thermal stability was observed for thiazolium ILs, resulting in thermal decomposition temperatures up to 264 ∼ 358 °C. In comparison with the conventional imidazolium ILs, thiazolium ILs exhibit moderate density, refractive index and surface tension, which all generally decrease with temperature. According to the temperature-dependent viscosity and conductivity, thiazolium ILs follow fractional Walden's rule, indicating strong ion-ion coupling. Besides, thiazolium ILs display relatively narrow electrochemical window (3.1 ∼ 4.0 V).

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), as a type of salt that is liquid at room temperature, break the entrenched views on salt when it was proved that some of them could be ignited. In this research, an innovative method was used to evaluate the thermal stability of such special salts and speculated their ignition mechanism based upon gas analysis. Four typical representative imidazole ILs (BMIMBF4, BMIMDCN, BMIMNO3, and BMIMOAc) were selected, and their thermal decomposition characteristics and thermal effect were obtained by simultaneous thermogravimetric analyser (STA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. Furthermore, their decomposition products were investigated by thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). It is noteworthy that they behaved diversely in DSC experiments and exhibited a radically different thermal effect in their decomposition. In addition, there exists positive feedback in the mechanism of the exothermic phenomenon of selected ILs in the air. Nevertheless, TG curves of four selected ILs were almost the same under air or nitrogen conditions. Series TG-FTIR experiments confirmed that the initial decomposition products of BMIMBF4 and BMIMDCN under air or nitrogen are extremely different. The decomposition products of BMIMNO3 and BMIMOAc in the air atmosphere have more oxidative products than nitrogen. The results denoted that the thermal decomposition mechanism of the four selected ILs in the air were the same as under nitrogen. The reducibility of the decomposition products induced the peculiar thermal effects of these imidazole ILs under the different gas environments. This study was innovative in researching the thermal effect and mechanism of imidazole ILs' decomposition and provided certain safety guidance for the process safety and loss prevention of imidazole ILs.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have a wide range of applications, owing to their negligible vapor pressure, high electrical conductivity, and low melting point. However, the thermal hazards of ILs and their mixtures are also non-negligible. In this study, the thermal hazards of various binary imidazolium ionic liquids (BIIL) mixtures were investigated. The effects of parent salt components and molar ratios on the thermal decomposition temperature (T-d) and flashpoint temperature (T-f) are investigated. It is found that both T-d and T-f increase as the proportion of highly thermally stable components in BIIL mixtures increases. Furthermore, the decomposition process of BIIL mixtures can be divided into two stages. For most molar ratios, the T-f of the BIIL mixtures is in the first stage of thermal decomposition. When the proportion of highly thermally stable components is relatively high, T-f is in the second stage of thermal decomposition. The flammability is attributed to the produced combustible gases during the thermal decomposition process. This work would be reasonably expected to provide some guidance for the safety design and application of IL mixtures for engineering.

Abstract:A series of hydrophilic and hydrophobic 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been prepared and characterized to determine how water content, density, viscosity, surface tension, melting point, and thermal stability are affected by changes in alkyl chain length and anion. In the series of RTILs studied here, the choice of anion determines water miscibility and has the most dramatic effect on the properties. Hydrophilic anions (e.g., chloride and iodide) produce ionic liquids that are miscible in any proportion with water but, upon the removal of some water from the solution, illustrate how sensitive the physical properties are to a change in water content. In comparison, for ionic liquids containing more hydrophobic anions (e.g., PF6− and N(SO2CF3)2−), the removal of water has a smaller affect on the resulting properties. For a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, increasing the alkyl chain length from butyl to hexyl to octyl increases the hydrophobicity and the viscosities of the ionic liquids increase, whereas densities and surface tension values decrease. Thermal analyses indicate high temperatures are attainable prior to decomposition and DSC studies reveal a glass transition for several samples. ILs incorporating PF6− have been used in liquid/liquid partitioning of organic molecules from water and the results for two of these are also discussed here. On a cautionary note, the chemistry of the individual cations and anions of the ILs should not be overlooked as, in the case of certain conditions for PF6− ILs, contact with an aqueous phase may result in slow hydrolysis of the PF6− with the concomitant release of HF and other species.

Abstract:The length of the alkyl groups and the symmetry of the cations in tetraalkylammonium-based ionic liquids affect the physical properties and their applications.A novel class of ionic liquids based on triethylbutylammonium cation was prepared in our group.In this series,(CF3SO2)2N-[bis(trifluoromethanesufonyl)imide],PF6-,BF4-,HSO4-,SCN-and PTSA-(p-toluenesulfonic acid) were assigned to be the counter ions for the ionic liquids.The synthesis of ionic liquids started with the reaction of triethylamine and n-butyl bromide,followed by the ionic exchange using LiNTf2,KPF6,NH4BF4,(Ag2O and H2SO4),KSCN and(Ag2O and PTSA) as the reactants.Then the residue was extracted with diethyl ether for several times to get the pure product.1H NMR,thermal analysis,cone-plate viscometry,densitometer method,element analysis are applied to determine the structures and properties of these ionic liquids.It is found that these ILs have lower melting points and viscosities compared to the corresponding ionic liquids with symmetrical tetraalkyammonium cations,indicating the significant importance of the asymmetrical cation on the physical properties of the ILs.The miscibility of these ILs with some common solvents was studied,and the relationship between configuration and property of the ILs were also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the thermal stability and specific heat capacities of four imidazolium based ionic liquids namely 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium octylsulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate, 1,3-dimethyl-imidazolium dimethyl phosphate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride have been experimentally analysed using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability was assessed by conventional and high resolution modulated TGA with the temperature range of 0 to 700 °C. The specific heat capacity was measured by using DSC within the temperature interval of 0 to 200 °C. The factors influencing the thermal stability and heat capacity of ionic liquids were studied. The thermal analysis results indicate that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulfate exhibited excellent thermal stability even at 440 °C while 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate obtained a maximum specific heat capacity of 4.52 J/g.K.

Abstract:A series of ionic liquids based on Octyl and Decyl methylimidazolium with different anions such as chloride, glycinate, dihydrogen phosphate and trihydrogen diphosphate, were synthesized and characterized by 1HNMR and elemental analysis. IL containing trihydrogen diphosphate anion, was synthesized for the first time. Physicochemical properties, including density, viscosity, surface tension, refractive index, and pH, were measured in temperature range 283.15 to 363.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The effects of temperature, alkyl chain, and anion type on physicochemical properties were investigated. The results revealed that the physicochemical properties decreased as a function of temperature. Unlike viscosity, other properties, such as density, surface tension, refractive index and pH values, decreased, while alkyl chain length increased. Understanding ILs properties and determining their unique abilities helps researchers to use them in new applications. These long alkyl chain ILs, are being used as surfactants to reduce Oil/Water interfacial tension in EOR process.

Abstract:Water's anomalous behavior is often explained using a two-liquid model where two types of water, high-density liquid (HDL) and low-density liquid (LDL) can be separated via a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) at low temperatures. Mixtures of water and the ionic liquid hydrazinium trifluoroacetate were suggested to also show an LLPT but with the advantage that there is no rapid ice crystallization hampering its observation. It remains controversial whether these solutions exhibit an LLPT or are instead associated with complex phase separation phenomena. We here show detailed low-temperature calorimetry and diffraction experiments on aqueous solutions containing hydrazinium trifluoroacetate and other similar ionic liquids, all at a solute mole fraction of x = 0.175. Hydrazinium trifluoroacetate, ammonium trifluoroacetate, ethylammonium trifluoroacetate and hydrazinium pentafluoropropionate all boast exothermic transitions unrelated to crystallization as well as remarkable structural changes upon cooling into the glassy state. We propose a model inspired by micelle formation and decomposition in surfactant solutions, which is complemented by MD simulations and allows rationalizing the rich phase behavior of our mixtures during cooling. The fundamental aspect of the model is the hydrophobic nature of fluorinated anions that enables micellization, which is reversed upon cooling and culminates in the remarkable exothermic first-order transitions observed at low tempeatures. That is, we assign the first-order transition not to an LLPT but to phase-separations similar to the ones when falling below the Krafft temperature. All other solutions merely show simple vitrification behavior. Still, they exhibit distinct differences in liquid fragility, which is decreased continuously with decreasing hydrophobicity of the anions. This might enable the systematic tuning of ionic liquids with the goal of designing aqueous solutions of specific fragility.

Abstract:This work is based on the investigation of thermophysical properties of pure ionic liquids {ILs; 1-ethyl-/1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide; [EMIM][(NTf) 2 ], [BMIM][(NTf) 2 ], solvent acetonitrile (ACN), and its binary mixtures. Under these investigations, density ( ρ ) and ultrasonic velocity ( u ) were measured using high-precision vibrating-tube densitometer and viscosity ( η ) with an automated falling ball microviscometer for all components as functions of the mole fraction of ILs ( ) at T = 298.15–323.15 K and p = 0.1 MPa. ρ , u , and η data of pure and binary components were used to evaluate excess/deviation parameters, and these parameters are correlated utilizing the extended form of Redlich–Kister equation. Interactions inside the ion pair of ILs and ILs–solvent are well discussed in terms of various specific/nonspecific forces of attractions. The interactions between the ion pair / and as well as IL solvent was calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in terms of various parameters at the D3-B3LYP/6–311 + + G(d,p) level of theory. Moreover, various molecular properties, including structures, frontier molecular orbitals, electrostatic potentials, atomic charges, dipole moments, interaction energies, reactivity descriptors, zero-point energy (ZPE), and heat capacity, were obtained at the same level of theory. Thereafter, the natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were performed to see all the interactions between donor–acceptor atoms at molecular level.

Abstract:We present a quantum chemical analysis of the structural and energetic characteristics of ion pairs that are most likely to be found in protic ionic liquids (PILs) — tripropylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TPrA/TFSI) and tripropylammonium hydrogen sulfate (TPrA/HSO 4 ). To do the analysis, we determine the most active centers of the cation–anion interaction, model the structures of the possible ion pair configurations, and calculate the ion–ion interaction energies. Bader's QTAIM analysis is used to evaluate the contributions of hydrogen bonds to the formation of the structure of the ion pairs of these PILs. We also report the results of experimental studies of the thermal stability, phase behavior, electrical conductivity, and dynamic viscosity of the synthesized TPrA/TFSI salt and compare them with those obtained previously for TPrA/HSO 4 . An analysis is done of the PIL structure effect on the obtained properties.

Abstract:As the cohesive properties (such as the enthalpy of sublimation) of solid organic salts (or ionic liquids, ILs) are unmeasurable, a method of their indirect determination is proposed in this paper. For this purpose, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC) were carried out over a wide range of temperatures. In this study, the mathematical relationship of the thermodynamic properties between the liquid and solid phases of ILs is established using the Born-Fajans-Haber cycle, in which the sum of the vaporization enthalpy of ILs, melting enthalpy and the enthalpy of solid-solid phase transition is regarded as the sublimation enthalpy of solid organic salts. With this method, the cohesive properties of tetrabutylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([N4444][NTf2]), which is an aprotic IL, were successfully obtained. Additionally, the difference between the lattice energy and the cohesive energy was employed to quantitatively calculate the charge separation distance of single ion pair (r12) in the gas phase of ionic liquids for the first time, which can serve as a standard methodology to measure the closeness in distance between the anion and the cation in a gas phase ion pair. The pyrolysis mechanism of [N4444][NTf2] was also explored.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of anion size, solvent content, and temperature on their physical properties, in this work, densities and viscosities of three binary mixtures, including ionic liquids (ILs) composed of the cation 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (i.e., [C6mim]+) and the halide anions (i.e., Cl–, Br–, and I–), along with methanol (MeOH), were measured across the entire concentration range at temperatures from 288.15 to 323.15 K, and enthalpies of mixing were determined at temperatures of 298.15 and 308.15 K. Excess volumes and viscosity deviations were calculated to study the nonideal behavior of the mixtures. The results of excess volumes suggest that a combination of intermolecular interactions and packing effects contributes to their nonideal behaviors, with packing effects likely dominating the negative excess volume. Viscosity deviations and enthalpies of mixing indicate that MeOH molecules intend to coordinate with IL ions (IL cations and IL anions) in the IL-rich region, with stronger interactions observed between [C6mim]Cl and MeOH compared to ([C6mim]Br + MeOH) and ([C6mim]I + MeOH) mixtures. Additionally, the nonrandom two-liquid model and the Gibbs–Helmholtz equation were combined to describe the enthalpies of mixing for the studied mixtures reliably.

Abstract:In this research, three kinds of imidazole ionic liquids were selected as the research objects. Among them, 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazole bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imine ([BMIM][Tf2N]) was used for gas adsorption, while 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazole acetate ([BMIM][Ac]) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazole tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) were used as extractants to replace traditional organic extractants. The thermal stability of three selected ionic liquids was studied, and their decomposition pathway and thermal stability were compared to explore the correlation between them. Thermal decomposition characteristic of [BMIM][Ac], [BMIM][BF4], and [BMIM][Tf2N] was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis. For these three ILs, dynamic thermogravimetric analyses under nitrogen atmosphere were performed using thermal gravimetric analyzer. The TG curve shows that the order of short-term thermal stability of three ionic liquids is [BMIM][Ac] < [BMIM][BF4] < [BMIM][Tf2N]. Both Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose methods were used to analyze the thermal dynamics of the experimental process. The apparent activation energies calculated by two different kinetic methods of the three ILs also have some slight differences. The possible influence of the decomposition mechanism on thermal stability was analyzed by thermogravimetric coupled with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR). After analyzing the experimental results, it is obvious that as the thermal stability of ionic liquids increases, their decomposition mechanisms become more and more complex.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) comprising alkylammonium cations and a bis(sulfonyl)amide anion with a vinyl substituent (SO 2 CF 3 -N – -SO 2 CH = CH 2 ) were synthesized. Their thermal properties and water miscibility were investigated and compared with those of the corresponding Tf 2 N (= (SO 2 CF 3 ) 2 N – ) salts. Exposure of these ILs to bromine vapor produced bromine adducts, tribromide salts, and a small amount of a cyclic adduct derived from the anion. The reaction products and the potassium salt of the anion were characterized crystallographically.

Abstract:Mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) and molecular solvents can overcome the drawbacks (high viscosity, high polarity, and high cost) of pure ILs and extend their practical use. The structural and interaction properties of ILs form the bases for understanding their properties. In this work, the structural properties of the mixtures of an IL, 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2OHMIM][Tf2N]), with chloroform, a molecular solvent of weak polarity, in various concentrations were analysed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Excess spectra were used to analyse the infrared spectra. The IL forms a stable ion cluster-CDCl3 complex with CDCl3 in the concentration range investigated. In the ion cluster-CDCl3 complex, the hydrogen atom of CDCl3 forms hydrogen-bonds with the fluorine atoms of the anion. In addition, the chlorine atom of CDCl3 forms a halogen-bond with the oxygen atom of the anion. All the hydrogen and halogen-bonds identified between the [C2OHMIM][Tf2N] ion cluster and CDCl3 exhibit low strength, closed shells, and electrostatically dominant interactions.
