Abstract:The ionic liquid (IL), 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium ethyl sulfate ([(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3]), was synthesized and characterized. The density and viscosity data were determined for the binary mixtures of [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] with water, methanol, or ethanol over the whole concentration range at different temperatures T = 293.15–323.15 K and atmospheric pressure p = 0.1 MPa. The excess molar volume, V m E, and viscosity deviation, Δη, for the binary mixtures are calculated and fitted with the Redlich–Kister type polynomial equation. The values of V m E for [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] + water system are observed to be negative, and those for [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] + methanol/ethanol system change from negative to positive against the mole fraction (x 1) of the IL, which exhibit the minimum values around x 1 = 0.2 and the maximum values near x 1 = 0.8. The Δη values for all of the three binary systems are negative, and the minimum values occur near x 1 = 0.6. The temperature dependence of viscosity for pure [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] and its binary mixtures can be well correlated with the Vogel–Fucher–Tammann equation. These fundamental physicochemical properties of the binary mixtures make for a better comprehension of the guanidinium-based ILs and the potential applications.

Abstract:The density, viscosity, and conductivity were investigated for binary mixtures of water and three ionic liquids (ILs), respectively: (3-aminopropyl) tributylphosphonium L-alpha-aminopropionic acid salt ([aP(4443)][Ala]), (3-aminopropyl) tributylphosphonium L-alpha-aminoisovaleric acid salt ([aP(4443)][Val]), and (3-aminopropyl) tributylphosphonium L-alpha-amino-4-methylvaleric acid salt ([aP(4443)][Leu]). The mole fractions of water increased from 0.00 to 0.75, and the temperature varied from (298.15 to 343.15) K. It was found that the viscosity decreased while conductivity increased with the increase of temperature and water content. As the alkyl side-chains of the amino acid anions which might play a role of steric hindrance were lengthened, the density (rho), viscosity (eta), and conductivity (sigma) follow the order of rho([aP4443][Ala]) > rho([aP4443][Val]) > rho([aP4443][Leu]), eta([aP4443][Ala]) < eta([aP4443][Val]) < eta([aP4443][Leu]), and sigma([aP4443][Ala]) > sigma([aP4443][Val]) > sigma([aP4443][Leu]), respectively. The temperature-dependent density is fit for the quadratic equation. The temperature dependence of viscosity and conductivity can be described by the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equation.

Abstract:Two guanidinium-based ionic liquids (ILs), 2-ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([TMGEt] [NTf2]) and ethyl sulfate ([TMGEt][C2OSO3]) were synthesized and characterized. Experimental densities and viscosities for the binary mixtures of the ILs with ethanol and 1-propanol from (293.15 to 323.15) K were measured over the whole composition range and at the atmospheric pressure of 0.1 MPa. The excess molar volumes (V-m(E)) and the viscosity deviations (Delta eta) for the binary systems were calculated and fitted with the Redlich-Kister equation. It is found that the density of [TMGEt] [NTf2] is much higher than that of [TMGEt][C2OSO3] at the same temperature, while the viscosity of the former with the value of 74.61 mPa.s is only 1/9 of that of the latter at 293.15 K. This indicates that the difference of the anions has a significant influence on the density and viscosity of the ILs with the same guanidinium cation. The addition of ethanol or 1-propanol leads to negative values of V-m(E) and Delta eta which result from the efficient packing of the constituents in the binary mixtures and the weakening of anion-cation interactions of the ILs. The partial molar volumes, excess partial molar volumes, Gibbs energy, and excess Gibbs energy of activation for viscous flow of the binary mixtures also have been calculated. It is hoped that the results provide useful information for the fundamental physicochemical properties of the guanidinium-based ILs and their further applications.

Abstract:The densities, viscosities, and electrical conductivities of the binary systems of the ionic liquid (IL), N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazinium propionate ([(OH)(2)C(2)pi][C2CO2]), with three protic solvents (water, methanol, or ethanol) were measured in the IL concentration range from (0.05 to 3.00) mol.kg-1 at different temperatures T = (293.15 to 323.15) K and atmospheric pressure p = 0.1 MPa. The concentration dependences of apparent molar volume, viscosity, and electrical conductivity of the binary mixtures were correlated by the Pitzer equation, the Jones-Dole equation, and the Casteel-Amis equation, respectively. It is observed that both the density and viscosity increase with the elevated IL concentration or the decreased temperature. The electrical conductivity at a given IL concentration increases with the temperature, while the conductivity at a given temperature changes clearly against the IL concentration, and a maximum value can be observed. The measured results and the correlations present help for a better understanding and applications of the piperazinium-based IL.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([C4C1im][SCN]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([C4C1im][N(CN)2]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ([C4C1im][C(CN)3]), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate ([C2C1im][B(CN)4]), with water and ethanol were measured over the whole concentration range at 0.1, 0.07, and 0.05 MPa. Activity coefficients were estimated from the boiling temperatures of the binary systems, and the data were used to evaluate the ability of COSMO-RS for describing these molecular systems. Aiming at further understanding the molecular interactions on these systems, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed. On the basis of the interpretation of the radial and spatial distribution functions along with coordination numbers obtained through MD simulations, the effect of the increase of CN-groups in the IL anion in its capability to establish hydrogen bonds with water and ethanol was evaluated. The results obtained suggest that, for both water and ethanol systems, the anion [N(CN)2](-) presents the higher ability to establish favorable interactions due to its charge, and that the ability of the anions to interact with the solvent, decreases with further increasing of the number of cyano groups in the anion. The ordering of the partial charges in the nitrogen atoms from the CN-groups in the anions agrees with the ordering obtained for VLE and activity coefficient data.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of anion size, solvent content, and temperature on their physical properties, in this work, densities and viscosities of three binary mixtures, including ionic liquids (ILs) composed of the cation 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (i.e., [C6mim]+) and the halide anions (i.e., Cl–, Br–, and I–), along with methanol (MeOH), were measured across the entire concentration range at temperatures from 288.15 to 323.15 K, and enthalpies of mixing were determined at temperatures of 298.15 and 308.15 K. Excess volumes and viscosity deviations were calculated to study the nonideal behavior of the mixtures. The results of excess volumes suggest that a combination of intermolecular interactions and packing effects contributes to their nonideal behaviors, with packing effects likely dominating the negative excess volume. Viscosity deviations and enthalpies of mixing indicate that MeOH molecules intend to coordinate with IL ions (IL cations and IL anions) in the IL-rich region, with stronger interactions observed between [C6mim]Cl and MeOH compared to ([C6mim]Br + MeOH) and ([C6mim]I + MeOH) mixtures. Additionally, the nonrandom two-liquid model and the Gibbs–Helmholtz equation were combined to describe the enthalpies of mixing for the studied mixtures reliably.

Abstract:In this study, thermodynamic properties of the binary mixtures of ionic liquid with an organic compound, as potential solvent systems in pharmaceutical industry applications, are studied. The densities and viscosities of the binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C4mim][BF4]) with acetonitrile, N,N-dimethylacetamide, methanol, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone were measured at atmospheric pressure over the [C4mim][BF4] mole fraction range from 0.1 to 0.9 and at temperatures from 303.15 to 333.15 K at intervals of 10 K. The densities were measured using a vibrating-tube digital density meter and the viscosities were measured using a capillary viscometer. The excess molar volumes (VE) and viscosity deviations (Δη) were calculated from densities and viscosities of mixture, respectively, and fitted to the Redlich–Kister polynomial. The optimally fitted parameters are also determined and the correlation results are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the excess molar volumes of binary mixtures of ionic liquid with different organic compounds are compared and discussed using the Hansen solubility parameter.

Abstract:This work is based on the investigation of thermophysical properties of pure ionic liquids {ILs; 1-ethyl-/1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide; [EMIM][(NTf) 2 ], [BMIM][(NTf) 2 ], solvent acetonitrile (ACN), and its binary mixtures. Under these investigations, density ( ρ ) and ultrasonic velocity ( u ) were measured using high-precision vibrating-tube densitometer and viscosity ( η ) with an automated falling ball microviscometer for all components as functions of the mole fraction of ILs ( ) at T = 298.15–323.15 K and p = 0.1 MPa. ρ , u , and η data of pure and binary components were used to evaluate excess/deviation parameters, and these parameters are correlated utilizing the extended form of Redlich–Kister equation. Interactions inside the ion pair of ILs and ILs–solvent are well discussed in terms of various specific/nonspecific forces of attractions. The interactions between the ion pair / and as well as IL solvent was calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in terms of various parameters at the D3-B3LYP/6–311 + + G(d,p) level of theory. Moreover, various molecular properties, including structures, frontier molecular orbitals, electrostatic potentials, atomic charges, dipole moments, interaction energies, reactivity descriptors, zero-point energy (ZPE), and heat capacity, were obtained at the same level of theory. Thereafter, the natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were performed to see all the interactions between donor–acceptor atoms at molecular level.

The results showed that the densities and viscosities were dependent strongly on NMP or ethanol content. Comparatively, the viscosity deviation Δη was more sensitive to temperature than the excess molar volume VE.

Abstract:Four ionic liquids (ILs) based on the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf2) anion were synthesized and characterized concerning their thermal stability, the occurrence of low temperature phase transitions and their volatility. All these physical quantities are highly important for possible applications. Both monocationic and dicationic ILs were considered. All ILs exhibit thermal stability exceeding 350 °C, an extremely high value, due to the presence of the NTf2 anion. Monocationic ILs can undergo crystallization, and they melt at 1 and 38 °C. On the contrary, dicationic ILs containing large positively charged ions display only a glass transition around -40 °C, without any crystallization or melting process; this fact is particularly important in view of the possibly low temperature applications of the dication ILs. The vapor pressure, pv, of the four ILs was measured by isothermal thermogravimetry in the temperature range between 250 and 325 °C; the lowest values of pv were obtained for the two dicationic liquids, suggesting that they are particularly well suited for high temperature applications. The vaporization enthalpy was calculated through the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and was found in the range between ~140 and ~180 kJ/mol depending on the specific IL.

Abstract:The guanidinium-based ionic liquid (IL), 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) imide ([TMG(C-2)(2)][NTf2]), was synthesized. Densities and viscosities of the IL and its mixtures with methanol or ethanol were reported at temperatures from 293.15 K to 323.15 K. The increment of IL concentration or the decrement of temperature significantly increases both density and viscosity. Excess molar volume (V-m(E)) and viscosity deviation (Delta eta) of each binary mixture were calculated, and the Redlich-Kister equation was used to fit V-m(E) and Delta eta with composition. When V-m(E) is negative with the mole fraction of IL (x(1)) lower than 0.8 for two systems, Delta eta is negative over the whole concentration range. The positive V-m(E) of the mixture at a high IL concentration indicates that interaction loss occurs. Moreover, structures of the equimolar mixture of IL and alcohol were obtained by DFT calculations, and alcohol-anion, alcohol-cation and cation-anion interactions were revealed. Strong H-bond interaction with the span of 1.61 angstrom is formed between the H atom of the -OH group in alcohol and the O atom in the [NTf2] anion, while the O atom of the -OH group in alcohol interacts with the methyl groups in the [TMG(C-2)(2)](+) cation. Significant cation-anion interactions (<2.40 angstrom) in the manners of H center dot center dot center dot F and H center dot center dot center dot O with spans less than 2.40 angstrom are found at the same time. It is the enhanced H-bond interactions that contribute to the negative V-m(E) of the equimolar mixture at non-concentrated regions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Ionic liquids are used in different processes owing to their low vapor pressure, large viscosity range, chemical and thermal stability, and superior conductance even without water. These features make them flexible and tunable, indicating their possible use as substitutes for commonly used compounds in many processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the properties of aqueous binary solutions for three different ionic liquids (ILs): dibutylammonium acetate, dibutylammonium propanoate, and dibutylammonium butanoate. The measured properties were density, speed of sound, and conductivity, and their isentropic compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated based on these properties. The temperature range used for measurements was 293.15–323.15 K. Mathematical models were used for each ionic liquid + water mixture to fit the density and speed of sound data. The increase in the alkyl chain leads to a tendency to decrease the values of density, speed of sound, and conductivity of the solutions. However, decreasing the dilution in water, the density, the conductivity and the speed of sound initially increase and then decrease, exhibiting a maximum in the initial water concentration range which indicates the formation of aggregates. Critical micellar concentrations at 298 K were determined through conductivity data. Enhancing the temperature leads to a decrease on density and sound velocity.

Abstract:Densities, viscosities, and conductivities of four chelate-based ionic liquids [Li(DOBA)][Tf2N], [Li(HDA)][Tf2N], [Li(DEA)][Tf2N], and [Li(EA)][Tf2N], and their binary mixtures with water were determined. Physical properties of [Li(DEA)][Tf2N], such as the thermal expansion coefficient of the ionic liquid, were calculated by empirical equations over a temperature range from 313.15 K to 333.15 K. The excess molar volume (VE) and viscosity deviations (Delta eta) were fitted by a Redlich-ister equation. The excess molar volumes show a negative deviation from that of the ideal solution and two different behaviors between water-rich and IL-rich regions. Most viscosity deviations show negative values, except for that of the binary mixture of [Li(DOBA)][Tf2N]/water. The effect of chelate state on the above physicochemical properties has been discussed. Furthermore, the Walden rule was used to evaluate the relationship of molar conductivity and dynamic viscosity of these ionic liquid solutions, which indicates all of them have good ionicity.

Abstract:The phase behavior and the ionic conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) of the N-alkyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium (PYR(xy)) cation and the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion are investigated upon addition of LiTFSI salt. We compare the case of two new ILs of the PYR(2y) cation (where 2 is ethyl and y is butyl or propyl) with that of the PYR(14) (where 1 is methyl and 4 is butyl). We find that the addition of LiTFSI increases the glass transition temperature, decreases the melting temperature and the heat of fusion and, in the ILs of the PYR(2y) family, suppresses crystallization. In the solid state, significant ionic conductivities are found, being as high as 10(-5) S cm(-1), strongly increasing with Li(+) concentration. The opposite trend is found in the liquid state, where the conductivity is on the order of 10(-3)-10(-2) S cm(-1) at room temperature. A T(g)-scaled Arrhenius plot shows that the liquid-state ionic conductivity in these systems is mainly governed by viscosity and that the fragility of the liquids is slightly influenced by the structural modifications on the cation.

Abstract:Abstract New experimental vapor pressures in the range 407 K to 460 K and vaporization enthalpy of the ionic liquids (IL) N -alkyl- N -methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquids have been measured using quartz crystal microbalance. The absolute vapor pressures and vaporization enthalpies were compared with analogous pyrrolidinium-based ILs with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion. The evaluated difference in vaporization enthalpy of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions allowed for estimation of corresponding property for a wide set of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion. The results are relevant to chemical engineering calculations of processes involving ILs as reaction and separation media.

Abstract:A systematic experimental density and sound velocity measurement was carried out for imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) in pure water and in aqueous solutions of 0.03 w/w of water-miscible polymers with different structures and molar masses at T = (288.15, 293.15, 298.15, 303.15 and 308.15) K and p = 84.5 kPa. The ILs under investigation are 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulphate ([C 4 mim][HSO 4 ]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C 4 mim]Br). The effects of temperature, polymer type, and IL anion type on the various volumetric and compressibility properties, such as apparent molar volume, isentropic compressibility, apparent molar isentropic compressibility, and infinite dilution apparent molar properties for transfer of ILs from water to aqueous polymer solution were scrutinised. From the gathered results, ion-water interactions, ion-ion interactions at finite concentration, and water-structure breaking character for aqueous solutions of [C 4 mim][HSO 4 ] are more considerable than aqueous solutions of [C 4 mim]Br. However, [C 4 mim]Br-polymer interactions are more favourable than interactions between [C 4 mim][HSO 4 ] and the studied polymers.

Abstract:Infinite dilution activity coefficients (γ i ∞) of 31 organic solutes (alkanes, cycloalkanes, olefins, aromatics, chlorinated alkanes, alcohols, and other polar organic solutes) in the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazole thiocyanate ([BMMIM][SCN]) were determined by gas–liquid chromatographic (GLC) method in the temperature range of 313.15–353.15 K. The infinite dilution partial molar excess enthalpies (H̅ i E, ∞), entropies (T ref S̅ i E, ∞), and Gibbs free energies (G̅ i E, ∞) of the organic solutes at the reference temperature T = 298.15 K and the solubility parameters (δ3) of [BMMIM][SCN] were derived from γ i ∞. The gas–liquid partition coefficients (K L) of solutes at different temperatures were calculated by referring to the densities of [BMMIM][SCN]. The linear free energy relationship solvation model was used to fit the K L values, and the K L prediction model was obtained. The selectivity (S ij ∞) and capacity (k j ∞) of n-hexane (i)/benzene (j) and cyclohexane (i)/benzene (j) at infinite dilution at 323.15 K were calculated. The results were compared with the values of ILs with the thiocyanate anion in the literature.

Abstract:We have investigated the density, viscosity, and CO2 and CH4 solubility of protic and aprotic imidazolium- and ammonium-based ionic liquids (ILs). Protic ILs are 1-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([bimH][TFSA]), 1-butylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bimH][BF4]), and N-butyldimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([N411H][TFSA]). Aprotic ILs are 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([bmim][TFSA]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]), and N-butyltrimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([N4111][TFSA]). Their density and viscosity were measured at 273.15 and 363.15 K under atmospheric pressure. Protic ILs exhibited higher density and viscosity than aprotic ILs. The measured densities were fitted to quadratic functions of temperature, and the measured viscosities were analyzed using the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann equation. The CO2 and CH4 solubilities in the protic and aprotic ILs were measured at 313.15 and 333.15 K using a magnetic suspension balance and exhibited a typical pressure dependence of physical absorption. The CO2 and CH4 solubilities of imidazolium-based protic ILs were lower than those of aprotic ILs; however, ammonium-based protic ILs were higher than aprotic ILs. Henry’s law constants for CO2 and CH4 were calculated from the experimental solubility data at mole fractions <0.1, and their ratios were used to calculate the CO2/CH4 selectivity. The CO2/CH4 selectivities of the protic and aprotic ILs did not differ significantly.
