Abstract:Acute aerobic exercise has been shown to benefit inhibitory control; however, less attention has been devoted to the effects of varying intensity and duration with a predetermined exercise volume. The current study assessed the influence of three distinct exercise conditions, each equated with a predesignated exercise volume but varied in terms of exercise durations and intensities, on inhibitory control utilizing both behavioral and neuroelectric measures obtained among late-middle-aged and older adults. Thirty-four adults (61.76 ± 0.80 years) completed three exercise conditions [i.e., a 30-min low-intensity exercise (LIE), a 20-min moderate-intensity exercise (MIE), and a 16-min high-intensity exercise (HIE)] and a non-exercise reading control condition (CON) on separate days. The exercise volumes of LIE and HIE were designed to match the exercise volume of MIE. Following cessation of each condition, the Stroop task was performed while event-related potentials were recorded. Improved behavioral performance (i.e., shorter response time, higher accuracy, and smaller interference scores) was observed after LIE, MIE, and HIE than CON (ps < .005). Additionally, whereas a larger P3b amplitude was only observed following MIE compared to CON (p < .01), larger N2 and smaller N450 amplitudes were observed following all three exercise conditions compared to CON (ps < .005). These findings suggested that while MIE may provide additional benefits for attentional resource allocation, exercise conditions volume matched to MIE resulted in superior inhibitory control, paralleled by modulations of the neural underpinnings of conflict monitoring/detection.

Acute effects of eccentric versus concentric exercise on executive function and attention of older adults

Abstract:Cognitive function is improved acutely after aerobic and/or resistance exercise, but it is unclear if the types of muscle contraction can influence this effect. This study tested the hypothesis that undertaking an acute bout of exercise with eccentric than concentric contractions would be more beneficial for improving cognitive function post-exercise in older adults. Twenty healthy older adults (66-75y) performed descending stair walking (DSW), ascending stair walking (ASW), and resistance exercise of the knee extensors with eccentric-only (RE-ECC) or concentric-only contractions (RE-CON) for 20 minutes each with a week between exercises in a randomized order. The Stroop tests of color naming (STCN) and conflicting color words (STCC), symbol digit modalities test, digit span test (DST), and two types of the trail making test (TMT-A, TMT-B) were assessed before and after sitting for 20 minutes (control session), and each exercise. A significant (p<0.05) improvement in the baseline test scores was found from the control session to the fourth exercise session. Time to complete the tests was significantly (p<0.05) reduced from pre- to post-exercise as well as after sitting for 20 minutes for STCN (-5.9±7.4s, Cohen's d=0.79), STCC (-8.9±11.1s, d=0.80), TMT-A (-22.6±9.7s, d=2.34) and TMT-B (-23.1±13.7s, d=1.69) without significant difference among the four exercise conditions. A significant (p<0.05) improvement of DST score was found from pre- to post-exercise for DSW (9.0±17.6%, d=0.51) and RE-ECC (6.5±10.6%, d=0.61), but not for ASW and RE-CON. These results partially supported the hypothesis that eccentric exercise could affect acute changes in cognitive function greater than concentric exercise.
Influence of acute exercise on inhibitory control and working memory of children: a comparison between soccer, resistance, and coordinative exercises

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The effects of resistance, coordinative, and comprehensive exercises on the executive function of children have not yet reached a conclusion due to inconsistent findings and paucity of evidence. This study compares the acute effects of resistance, coordinative, and soccer exercises on inhibitory control and working memory of children. METHODS: A total of 145 Chinese children (71 girls and 74 boys) aged 10-12 years old were recruited to participate in a pretest-post test randomized group study. Participants were randomly assigned to 40 minutes of resistance training, coordinative training, soccer training, and control groups (watching of cartoons). The inhibitory control and working memory of participants were measured via Go/NoGo, 2-back test, respectively, before and after the assigned intervention. RESULTS: Results of repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that time x group interaction was significant in terms of accuracy rate of Go/NoGo test, and the reaction time and accuracy rate of 2-back test. Compared with those in the control group, participants in the resistance, coordinative, soccer training groups had shorter reaction time in the 2-back test, and better accuracy rate in Go/NoGo and 2-back tests. However, no significant difference was observed in the reaction time and accuracy rate of both tests between the three exercise intervention groups. CONCLUSION: Acute resistance, coordinative training, and soccer training with moderate intensity have positive impacts on the inhibitory control and working memory of children, at least temporarily. No difference in executive function improvement was found in the three types of exercise.
Acute Effects of Different Exercise Intensities on Executive Function and Oculomotor Performance in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: Moderate-Intensity Continuous Exercise vs. High-Intensity Interval Exercise

Abstract:A wealth of evidence has shown that a single bout of aerobic exercise can facilitate executive function. However, none of current studies on this topic have addressed whether the magnitude of the acute-exercise benefit on executive function and oculomotor performance is influenced by different aerobic exercise modes. The present study was thus aimed toward an investigation of the acute effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) vs. moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) on executive-related oculomotor performance in healthy late middle-aged and older adults. Using a within-subject design, twenty-two participants completed a single bout of 30 min of HIIE, MICE, or a non-exercise-intervention (REST) session in a counterbalanced order. The behavioral [e.g., reaction times (RTs), coefficient of variation (CV) of the RT], and oculomotor (e.g., saccade amplitude, saccade latency, and saccadic peak velocity) indices were measured when participants performed antisaccade and prosaccade tasks prior to and after an intervention mode. The results showed that a 30-min single-bout of HIIE and MICE interventions shortened the RTs in the antisaccade task, with the null effect on the CV of the RT in the late middle-aged and older adults. In terms of oculomotor metrics, although the two exercise modes could not modify the performance in terms of saccade amplitudes and saccade latencies, the participants’ saccadic peak velocities while performing the oculomotor paradigm were significantly altered only following an acute HIIE intervention. The present findings suggested that a 30-min single-bout of HIIE and MICE interventions modulated post-exercise antisaccade control on behavioral performance (e.g., RTs). Nevertheless, the HIIE relative MICE mode appears to be a more effective aerobic exercise in terms of oculomotor control (e.g., saccadic peak velocities) in late middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract:Acute aerobic exercise exerts a small beneficial effect on cognition. Previous research primarily examines cognitive changes following a bout of exercise, while little is currently known about changes in cognitive performance during exercise. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low-intensity cycling on cognitive function indexed by behavioral (response accuracy; reaction time) and neurocognitive (P3 mean amplitude; P3 centroid latency) responses. Twenty-seven (Mage = 22.9 ± 3.0 years old) individuals were counterbalanced into low-intensity exercise (EX) and seated control (SC) conditions spread across two testing sessions. During each condition, participants completed a 10 min resting baseline period, 20 min of either sustained cycling or seated rest, and a 20 min recovery period. Primary outcomes were assessed at 10 min intervals (five blocks total) throughout each condition via a modified visual oddball task while electroencephalography (EEG) responses were measured. Across time blocks, both conditions exhibited faster reaction times on frequent trials but reduced accuracy to rare trials, suggesting a speed–accuracy tradeoff. There were no differences between conditions in P3 centroid latency, whereas a significant reduction in P3 amplitude was observed during the 20 min exercise period compared to the control condition. Taken together, results suggest that exercise at lower doses may have minimal influence on behavioral outcomes of cognitive performance but may impact more basic measures of brain function. Information gathered from this study may aid in the development of appropriate exercise prescriptions for populations looking to specifically target cognitive function deficits.
Beneficial effects of acute high-intensity exercise on electrophysiological indices of attention processes in young adult men

Abstract:Background: Emerging research suggests that a single bout of aerobic exercise can improve cognition, brain function and psychological health. Our aim was to examine the effects of high-intensity exercise on cognitive-performance and brain measures of attention, inhibition and performance-monitoring across a test-battery of three cognitive tasks. Method: Using a randomised cross-over design, 29 young men completed three successive cognitive tasks (Cued Continuous Performance Task [CPT-OX]; Eriksen Flanker Task; four-choice reaction-time task [Fast Task]) with simultaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) recording before and after a 20-min high-intensity cycling exercise and resting control session. Cognitive-performance measures, EEG power and event-related potential measures, were obtained during the tasks. Random-intercept linear models were used to investigate the effects of exercise, compared to rest, on outcomes. Results: A single bout of exercise significantly (p < 0.05) increased the amplitude of the event-related potential Go P3, but had no effect on the contingent negative variation (CNV), Cue P3 or NoGo P3, during the CPT-OX. Delta power, recorded during the CPT-OX, also significantly increased after exercise, whereas there was no effect on cognitive-performance in this task. Exercise did not influence any cognitive-performance or brain measures in the subsequent Flanker or Fast Tasks. Conclusion: Acute high-intensity exercise improves brain-indices reflecting executive and sustained attention during task performance (Go P3 and delta activity), in the CPT-OX, but not anticipatory attention (Cue P3 and CNV) or response inhibition (NoGo P3) in young-adult men. Exercise had no effect on cognitive-performance or brain measures in the subsequent Flanker and Fast tasks, which may potentially be explained by the time delay after exercise.
Acute and Protocol-Dependent Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Neurobiochemical Indices and Neuropsychological Performance of Working Memory

Abstract:This study aimed to clarify the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) protocols on peripheral neurotransmitters and on the neuropsychological performance of working memory and to explore underlying correlations. In a randomised cross-over trial, twenty-two adults in late middle age or older completed a single session of HIIE, MICE, or a control condition (rest) in counterbalanced order with a 7-day washout. Neuropsychological indices of working memory and neurotransmitter (norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin) levels were measured at baseline and after an intense bout of either HIIE or MICE, or an intervention without exercise. Analyses of the results revealed no significant effect of HIIE on the neurotransmitters, but significantly high levels of norepinephrine and serotonin were induced by MICE. In terms of neuropsychological performance, a single session of HIIE and MICE shortened the participants' reaction times (RTs), whereas only MICE caused a significant increase in accuracy rates (ARs). Significant correlations were found between the changes in norepinephrine levels and ARs/RTs before and after the HIIE and MICE interventions, respectively. The results of this study suggest that an intense MICE protocol triggers higher norepinephrine and serotonin levels than HIIE does. The possible neurobiochemical factor (i.e., norepinephrine) underlying the HIIE/MICE-induced neuropsychological benefits (i.e., improved ARs and RTs) for working memory appears to be protocol-dependent. Systematic and prolonged investigations are required to further understand the effects/mechanisms specific to each exercise protocol in order to optimize the benefits of aerobic exercise interventions for long-term neurobiochemical and neuropsychological health.

Abstract:Acute aerobic exercise has a facilitative effect on task components with varied inhibitory control demands. However, the effects on specific neural processes evoked by an inhibitory control task remain underexplored. In this study, we examined the effects of acute aerobic exercise on midfrontal theta event-related synchronisation and frontal alpha event-related desynchronisation, two EEG frequency markers that index distinct neural process during inhibitory control. Fifty-eight college-age students (mean age = 19.2 ± 1.0 years old) participated in this within-subjects, crossover, pretest-posttest design study. Participants engaged in a 20-minute bout of aerobic exercise condition and an active control condition on separate days in a counterbalanced order. The aerobic exercise condition consisted of walking/jogging on a treadmill at moderate intensity (approximately 70% of age-predicted maximum heart rate). The active control condition consisted of walking on the treadmill at 0.5 mph and 0% grade. Before and after both conditions, participants completed a flanker task, with concurrent EEG data collection. Despite shorter reaction times following aerobic exercise relative to following active control condition, neither aerobic exercise nor active control condition modulated midfrontal theta event-related synchronisation (which indexes control and behavioural monitoring process) or frontal alpha event-related desynchronisation (which reflects cognitive integration mechanism). Collectively, while acute aerobic exercise enhances inhibitory control performance at a behavioural level, these effects do not extend to the modulation of neural processes underlying behaviour adaptation and cognitive integration mechanisms.

Abstract:Introduction: Physical exercise not only benefits peoples' health, but also improves their cognitive function. Although growing evidence suggests that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a time-efficient exercise regime that can improve inhibitory control performance by enhancing cortical activation in the prefrontal cortex, less is known about how Tabata training, a subset of HIIT that requires no equipment or facilities to perform, affects inhibitory control and cortical activation in young adults. Therefore, we aimed to reveal the effect of an acute bout of HIIT and Tabata training on inhibitory control and attempted to identify its potential neural substrates. Methods: Forty-two young adults (mean age: 19.36 ± 1.36 years; 21 females) performed the Stroop task and Simon task before and after acute HIIT, Tabata training, or a control session, and cortical hemodynamic changes in the prefrontal area were monitored by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during the tasks. Both HIIT and Tabata interventions lasted for a total of 12 min. The HIIT participants performed ergometer cycling at their 80% maximal aerobic power at 90–100 rpm, and the Tabata participants performed a total of 8 intense activities, such as jumping jacks, high knees, and butt kickers, without using equipment or facilities, keeping the heart rate at 80–95% of their maximum heart rate. Participants in the control group watched a sport video while sedentary. Cognitive tasks data and fNIRS data were analyzed by repeated-measures three-way ANOVA. Results and discussion: Our results indicated that both the HIIT and Tabata groups exhibited reduced reaction times after the intervention, and there were alterations in activation patterns in the dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortices.

Abstract:AIM: To date, there is a controversy regarding the effects of acute aerobic exercise of moderate intensity on executive function and prefrontal cortex activity in community-dwelling older adults. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute aerobic exercise of moderate intensity in healthy older adults.METHODS: Fifty-six healthy older adults were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG) that performed moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or the wait-list control group (CG) for a total of 15 sessions. To compare the two groups, the Stroop Color-Word Task (SCWT) and the Trail-Making Test Part B (TMT-B) were implemented for executive function and prefrontal cortex activity during executive function testing.RESULTS: After the intervention, the EG achieved a significant improvement in the SCWT (P < 0.001; η2 = 0.196) and the TMT-B (P < 0.001; η2 = 0.245) compared with the CG. In addition, the EG showed a lower HbO2 concentration in the prefrontal cortex than the CG during the SCWT (P < 0.05; η2 = 0.076) and the TMT-B (P < 0.05; η2 = 0.090).CONCLUSIONS: These findings shed new light on the clinical effectiveness of acute moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on executive function and prefrontal cortex activity in healthy older adults. Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare, using meta-analytic techniques, the effect of acute, intermediate intensity exercise on the speed and accuracy of performance of working memory tasks. It was hypothesized that acute, intermediate intensity exercise would have a significant beneficial effect on response time and that effect sizes for response time and accuracy data would differ significantly. Random-effects meta-analysis showed a significant, beneficial effect size for response time, g=-1.41 (p<0.001) but a significant detrimental effect size, g=0.40 (p<0.01), for accuracy. There was a significant difference between effect sizes (Z(diff)=3.85, p<0.001). It was concluded that acute, intermediate intensity exercise has a strong beneficial effect on speed of response in working memory tasks but a low to moderate, detrimental one on accuracy. There was no support for a speed-accuracy trade-off. It was argued that exercise-induced increases in brain concentrations of catecholamines result in faster processing but increases in neural noise may negatively affect accuracy.

Abstract:Objective: Examine the effects of an acute bout of physical exercise on cognitive function in adults with cognitive impairment (CI). Design: Systematic review with meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of a single exercise session on cognitive function. Dual data abstraction, risk of bias assessment (RoB2) and strength of evidence assessment (GRADE) were conducted. Results were pooled using the inverse variance heterogeneity (IVhet) model or synthesised narratively. Data sources: Six databases from inception to July 2024: (1) PubMed, (2) SportDiscus, (3) PsychINFO, (4) Cochrane Central, (5) PEDro, (6) Embase. Eligibility criteria: RCT of acute exercise with male/female participants, aged 18+, and physician diagnosed or self-reported CI. Results: 15 studies (8 parallel group, 7 crossover) representing 500 participants were included, 10 in the meta-analysis. Acute exercise significantly improved executive function (moderate evidence, 9 studies, 330 participants, g=0.33, small effect, 95%CI [0.07, 0.59], p=0.01, I2=26.77, 95%CI [00.00, 65.82]. However, this was only for high risk of bias/crossover studies. Improvements in direction of benefit but non-significant for reaction time (very low evidence, 7 studies, 271 participants, g=0.17, small effect 95%CI [-0.20, 0.54], p=0.36, I2=50.18, 95%CI [00.00, 78.88]. Improvements in memory, but mixed evidence for attention, information processing and motor memory noted via narrative assessment. Conclusion: In a healthy population, acute exercise improves cognition. For adults with CI, we found evidence of improvement in executive function, reaction time and memory. However, the review was limited by the inclusion of studies primarily with high/some concerns for bias and very low/low strength of evidence.

Abstract:In individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD), cognitive impairments can cause their quality of life to deteriorate and aggravate their motor symptoms. No studies have yet explored the neurophysiological and neurobiochemical mechanisms of changes in cognitive processing underlying neuropsychological problems exhibited by this group. The current study aimed to investigate and compare the acute effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and continuous moderate-intensity exercise (CMIE) on the neurocognitive performance and neurotransmitter levels of individuals with PD. In addition, the relationship between changes in neurocognitive performance and those in the peripheral dopamine level induced by HIIE and CMIE interventions were also examined. Using a within-subjects design, twenty-three participants with mild to moderate PD completed a single session of both HIIE and CMIE, as well as a session in a control condition (REST) in counterbalanced order. The neurocognitive indices of working memory [i.e., accuracy rate (AR), reaction time (RT), and latencies and amplitudes of N2 and P3 event-related potentials (ERPs)] were assessed. Blood samples were taken before and after the three intervention modes. During the working memory task, acute HIIE and acute CMIE brought about faster RTs and P3 ERP waves with higher amplitudes in individuals with PD. Furthermore, better ARs and a shorter N2 latency were associated with engaging in HIIE and CMIE, respectively. On the other hand, only the acute CMIE intervention was associated with significant increases in the plasma dopamine level. Finally, no significant correlation was obtained between changes in neurocognitive performance and those in the dopamine level which were assessed both before and after taking part in the interventions. For individuals with mild to moderate PD, acute HIIE and CMIE proved to be tolerable, safe, and effective modes of aerobic exercise. These types of exercise are well-suited to be practiced at home and in a community setting in order to decrease the risk of cognitive impairment in general and more specifically the risk of developing dementia as a comorbidity of PD. However, the acute benefits underlying the two dynamic forms of exercise appear to be intensity-dependent in PD.

Aerobic Exercise Training Improves Cerebral Blood Flow and Executive Function: A Randomized, Controlled Cross-Over Trial in Sedentary Older Men

Abstract:Background: Physical activity may attenuate age-related cognitive decline by improving cerebrovascular function. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate effects of aerobic exercise training on cerebral blood flow (CBF), which is a sensitive physiological marker of cerebrovascular function, in sedentary older men.Methods: Seventeen apparently healthy men, aged 60–70 years and with a BMI between 25 and 35 kg/m2, were included in a randomized, controlled cross-over trial. Study participants were randomly allocated to a fully-supervised, progressive, aerobic exercise training or no-exercise control period for 8 weeks, separated by a 12-week wash-out period. Measurements at the end of each period included aerobic fitness evaluated using peak oxygen consumption during incremental exercise (VO2peak), CBF measured with pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging, and post-load glucose responses determined using an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Furthermore, cognitive performance was assessed in the domains of executive function, memory, and psychomotor speed.Results: VO2peak significantly increased following aerobic exercise training compared to no-exercise control by 262 ± 236 mL (P < 0.001). CBF was increased by 27% bilaterally in the frontal lobe, particularly the subcallosal and anterior cingulate gyrus (cluster volume: 1008 mm3; P < 0.05), while CBF was reduced by 19% in the right medial temporal lobe, mainly temporal fusiform gyrus (cluster volume: 408 mm3; P < 0.05). Mean post-load glucose concentrations determined using an OGTT decreased by 0.33 ± 0.63 mmol/L (P = 0.049). Furthermore, executive function improved as the latency of response was reduced by 5% (P = 0.034), but no changes were observed in memory or psychomotor speed.Conclusion: Aerobic exercise training improves regional CBF in sedentary older men. These changes in CBF may underlie exercise-induced beneficial effects on executive function, which could be partly mediated by improvements in glucose metabolism. Abstract:The rapid increase in population aging and associated age-related cognitive decline requires identifying innovative and effective methods to prevent it. To manage this socio-economic challenge, physical, cognitive, and combined stimulations are proposed. The superiority of simultaneous training compared to passive control and physical training alone seems to be an efficient method, but very few studies assess the acute effect on executive function. This study aimed to investigate the acute effect of simultaneous physical and cognitive exercise on executive functions in healthy older adults, in comparison with either training alone. Seventeen healthy older adults performed three experimental conditions in randomized order: physical exercise, cognitive exercise, and simultaneous physical and cognitive exercise. The protocol involved a 30 min exercise duration at 60% of theoretical maximal heart rate or 30 min of cognitive exercise or both. Executive functions measured by the Stroop task and pre-frontal cortex oxygenation were assessed before and after the intervention. We found a main effect of time on executive function and all experimental condition seems to improve inhibition and flexibility scores (<0.05). We also found a decrease in cerebral oxygenation (Δ[HbO2]) in both hemispheres after each intervention in all cognitive performance assessed (p < 0.05). Simultaneous physical and cognitive exercise is as effective a method as either physical or cognitive exercise alone for improving executive function. The results of this study may have important clinical repercussions by allowing to optimize the interventions designed to maintain the cognitive health of older adults since simultaneous provide a time-efficient strategy to improve cognitive performance in older adults.

Abstract:In young and middle-aged adults, executive function is associated with success in work-life and mental health. Physical activity with and without cognitive training has the potential to benefit executive function, but its relative effectiveness remains unclear. This network meta-analysis compares the effectiveness of different exercise and cognitive training types and their combination on executive function in young and middle-aged adults. PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane, PsycINFO, and SPORTDiscus were searched for experimental studies that compared pre- to posttest changes in inhibitory control and/ or working memory between one or more intervention groups and a control group. Interventions were ranked on their relative effectiveness using P-scores. Study quality was rated using the PEDro scale. Forty-six studies were included and yielded 30 and 70 pair-wise effect sizes for the inhibitory control and working memory networks, respectively. With one exception, all studies were of high quality. Combined exercise and working memory training induced the greatest benefits for working memory (standardized mean differences, SMD = 0.59), whereas training a single executive function (SMD = 0.32) was most effective for inhibitory control. The effectiveness of working memory training (SMD ≥ 0.27) and coordinative exercise (SMD ≥ 0.20–0.29) ranked second and third for both executive function outcomes. In contrast, the effectiveness of endurance exercise was comparable to active controls on both networks. In young and middle-aged adults, exercise with coordinative demands seems to have an effectiveness similar to working memory training. The combination of exercise and cognitive training further increases executive function benefits. Abstract:The present study examined the sustained effects of acute resistance exercise on inhibitory function in healthy middle-aged adults. Seventy healthy middle-aged adults (mean age = 46.98 ± 5.70 years) were randomly assigned to exercise or control groups, and the Stroop test was administered before, immediately after, and 40 min after exercise. The resistance exercise protocol involved two sets of seven exercises performed for a maximum of 10 repetitions, with 60 s between sets and exercises. Acute resistance exercise resulted in higher Stroop test performance under the incongruent (inhibition) and interference conditions immediately post-exercise and 40 min post-exercise. Furthermore, the difference in scores after 40 min was significant. The findings indicate that a moderately intensive acute resistance exercise could facilitate Stroop performance and has a more beneficial effect on sustaining of cognition that involves executive control at least 40 min.
