Abstract:Escalating water contamination and scarcity concerns have fueled the drive for efficient waste remediation technologies. Conventional approaches, though effective, still come with limitations such as low efficacy, high costs, and generation of secondary contaminants. Various novel nanomaterials such as MXenes, (2D materials with the general formula of M n+1 X n , M being an early transition metal, and X being carbon or nitrogen) and magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as promising candidates to combat these issues. Among them, magnetic NPs/MXenes nanohybrids stand out for their enhanced features and prospective applications in photocatalytic contaminant removal from industrial wastewater. This is attributed to their adeptness in addressing the intrinsic constraints of MXenes encompassing challenges like aggregation, toxicity, limited recyclability, and high costs. By utilizing the synergistic effects of magnetic nanoparticles and MXenes, these nanohybrids demonstrate improved conductivity, a wide surface area, and greater light absorption, contributing to efficient pollutant degradation. These materials generally have an impressive degradation efficiency exceeding 90% against textile dyes and various pollutants, showcasing remarkable reusability over multiple cycles (> 3X). Various magnetic NPs/MXenes nanohybrids, including those based on iron, cobalt, nickel, ferrites, and perovskites, are thoroughly discussed in this paper, along with their efficacy in degrading pollutants. This paper is mainly focused on fulfilling the knowledge gap on NPs/MXenes in terms of synthesis, unique features, and photocatalytic potential. This review accentuates the potential of magnetic NPs/MXenes nanohybrids as a novel approach in the realm of water remediation by compiling the existing knowledge. Besides, this work suggests future research should be focused on the diversification of composite components and expansion of these photocatalysts for degradation of a wide variety of contaminants, including organic vapors in the air.

Abstract:An increase in the pollutants such as hazardous refractory contaminations, organic dyes, pharmaceutical and pesticide contaminants which are widely disposed to water resources due to population and global industrialization is becoming one of the most significant health issues in the world. Due to the unique properties, easy production, low-cost preparation, and excellent degradation of water and wastewater pollutants, magnetic-MXene nanocomposites are promising candidates with many attractive characteristics. These composites offer new fascinating perspectives in various applications such as biosensors, cancer theragnostic, imaging strategies, and especially in water treatment. This paper reviews magnetic-MXene nanocomposites for removing contaminants from aqueous environments. The concept of using magnetic nanomaterials for water treatment, MXene applications and implications for the degradation of water and wastewater pollutants, and magnetic-MXene nanocomposites for water treatment will be discussed. Future trends on MXene and Magnetic-MXene nanomaterials for water treatment and environmental applications will also be explained.

Abstract:The pervasive presence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) across various ecological settings, organisms, and products has underscored the urgent need to collect data on their abundance and identify the polymer types in diverse substrates. NPs distinguish themselves from MPs by their smaller size. The application of magnetic composites in wastewater treatment has grown in popularity due to their remarkable flocculation capabilities and ferromagnetic properties. This comprehensive review centers on the synthesis methods, preparation technologies, and practical applications of magnetic polymeric composites for separating and degrading MPs/NPs. It offers an extensive overview of recent advancements in the separation and degradation of MPs/NPs within various wastewater sources. The review begins by consolidating efficient methods for the separation of MPs/NPs. This includes techniques such as adsorption, coagulation/flocculation, flotation, filtration, and magnetic separation. The subsequent section explores diverse approaches for the degradation of MPs/NPs, encompassing advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), electrochemical degradation, photocatalysis, and biological degradation. Additionally, the review offers in-depth insights into the synthesis and characterization of magnetic polymeric composites. Lastly, it discusses the current challenges and prospects associated with the separation and degradation of MPs/NPs in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The presence of pharmaceuticals in water resources is a growing concern worldwide due to their potential health impacts on aquatic life and humans. Therefore, there is a need to develop effective and sustainable technologies for removing these contaminants from water and wastewater. Magnetic nanomaterials have emerged as promising materials for this purpose due to their fast kinetics, easy magnetic separation, and reuse. This review is important as it highlights the significance of developing sustainable technologies using magnetic iron-based nanomaterials for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water resources. This review investigated the application of magnetic nanomaterials for removing pharmaceuticals from water resources through adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. Here, the synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanomaterials and analytical detection techniques were evaluated. The review findings indicate that magnetic nanomaterials effectively removed pharmaceuticals from water through adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. More importantly, the removal processes remained effective for many cycles. However, only 22% of the studies demonstrated the application of magnetic nanomaterials on real water samples, as 78% stopped at experiments using distilled water in the laboratory. Further research on multi-component systems and real water samples is necessary to fully evaluate the potential of magnetic nanomaterials for pharmaceutical removal from water resources.

Abstract:The wastewater containing pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) could not be removed effectively by traditional sewage treatment technologies and was directly discharged into the natural environment, causing serious threats to environment and human health. In this study, polypyrrole-functionalized Cu2MoS4 magnetic composites (Cu2MoS4-Fe3O4@PPy) were prepared and applied as an adsorbent for the removal of PPCPs from aqueous solution. Cu2MoS4-Fe3O4@PPy exhibited synergistic effects and showed excellent adsorption performances for indomethacin (IDM) and ketoprofen (KET) with removal efficiencies of 97.1% and 88.6% at initial pollutant concentration of 10 mg/L, respectively. It was also found that IDM and KET could be effectively removed by Cu2MoS4-Fe3O4@PPy in a wider pH range (5.0-11.0). Cu2MoS4-Fe3O4@PPy could be separated easily with a magnet and possessed the removal efficiency up to 83% even after eight adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, the potential applications of Cu2MoS4-Fe3O4@PPy as a photocatalyst after the deposition of silver nanoparticles were further explored. Under visible-light irradiation, the Cu2MoS4-Fe3O4@PPy-Ag could quickly degrade malachite green (MG) with 94.8% removal within 60 min and had higher selectivity for MG in dual and ternary dye solutions. Due to excellent performances in adsorption and photocatalysis, Cu2MoS4-based magnetic composites had great potential application in the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants.

One of the main risks to aquatic life and human health is water pollution, which can lead to a number of extremely dangerous illnesses, including cancer, asthma, and gastrointestinal problems. The contaminated wastewater could be cleaned using a variety of traditional and cutting-edge techniques. In order to solve these problems, scientists have been investigating a number of treatment techniques, such as adsorption, which uses adsorbents to effectively and selectively remove particular pollutants. Adsorption is the most widely used economical and effective method for treating wastewater and eliminating dangerous contaminants. The surface characteristics of the adsorbents utilized, such as their surface area and availability of functional groups, are what primarily determine the efficacy of adsorption. Since different carbon derivatives derived from waste are used as adsorbents to remove harmful pollutants, nanomaterials have been used as effective adsorbents in recent times because of their superior surface qualities. Particularly magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), magnetic adsorbents have shown great promise as an adsorbent material for water filtration. It is appropriate for the adsorption of numerous pollutants due to its large surface area, supermagnetism, and simplicity of functionalization. In order to eliminate harmful contaminants including heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from wastewater, this review paper critically examined the synthesis of nanomaterials, with a focus on green synthesis. It is anticipated that this kind of multidisciplinary research would lead to more advancements in advanced nanotechnology and nanoscience in the water treatment industry.

Abstract:Water treatment plays a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for water and preventing future shortages. The unique and adaptable arbitrary, physical, and chemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them an attractive candidate for use in water treatment. CNTs are employed in environmental applications because of their exceptional adsorbent, mechanical, and chemical characteristics. Functional groups chemically or physically modify pure CNTs, improving their desalination and extraction capabilities. The advantages of CNT-based composites, such as antifouling performance, excellent selectivity, and higher water permeability, reassure us of their effectiveness in water treatment. This review comprehensively discusses the structural features and synthetic methods of CNTs. The functionalization and the pros and cons of functionalized CNT materials are also discussed. Pharmaceutical compounds are often manufactured using batch processes, resulting in the production of various products in wastewater. The occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in drinking water arises from two distinct origins: the pharmaceutical industry's manufacturing procedures and the widespread use of pharmaceutical compounds, which leads to their presence in urban and agricultural wastewater. This review discusses role of CNT-based nanomaterials in effectively removing pharmaceutical waste from wastewater through adsorption and photocatalytic processes. Lastly, the future approach is discussed to develop CNT-based nanomaterials better.

Abstract:The rapid urbanization of modern society has undeniably driven human progress, but it has also introduced a wide array of environmental contaminants, including hazardous heavy metals like arsenic, which adversely affects the public health. The contamination of drinking water and other aquatic sources with elevated concentrations of arsenic is a significant environmental and public health concern. To address this issue, the decontamination of arsenic-containing water is essential. In recent years, nano-adsorbents have emerged as a promising solution for the effective removal of arsenic from water. However, a key challenge lies in the separation of these nano-adsorbents from the treated water, which hinders their practical applications in natural water systems. To mitigate this limitation, researchers have increasingly focused on magnetic nanocomposite adsorbents which offer the dual advantage of surface functionalization– enabling their ability to precisely target and adsorb arsenic– and easy magnetic separation, significantly improving their potential for real-world water treatment applications. Magnetic nano-adsorbents exhibit several key attributes, including high surface area, small particle size, excellent chemical stability, superparamagnetic, and strong magnetic susceptibility, making them ideal candidates for separation via external magnetic fields. This research article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in magnetic nano-adsorbents, focusing on various modification strategies using different support matrices for the remediation of arsenic-contaminated water. Additionally, an in-depth analysis of the different synthetic methodologies, primary characterization techniques, the underlying adsorption mechanism, and the influence of the different parametric variables that affect the arsenic removal efficiency are systematically presented. Moreover, this study examines the practical applications, regeneration and proper stabilization options of these nano-adsorbents which is crucial for waste management. Furthermore, the toxicological assessment studies, potential research challenges and future perspective pertaining to the large-scale utilization in industries are also highlighted, offering critical insights for the further advancement of magnetic nanocomposites in arsenic-laden wastewater remediation.

Abstract:The recognition that pharmaceuticals, personal care product chemicals, and endocrine disruptors can cause deleterious effects has led to search new approaches for removing them from contaminated waters. The emergence of tailored nanomaterials, with magnetic properties and high adsorption capacity for a wide range of compounds, provides a new tool to deal with these complex emerging organic contaminants (EOCs). Magnetic permanently confined micelle arrays (Mag-PCMAs) synthesized with cationic surfactants can provide several sorption mechanisms for the multifunctional EOCs. The sorption onto Mag-PCMAs of seven EOCs and two more conventional contaminants was studied. The results indicate high sorption capacity for many of the EOCs. However, because of the complex nature of these EOCs, it is not possible to predict their adsorption based on a single physicochemical characteristic such as K-ow or pK(a). Sorption kinetics are relatively fast, within the typical range for water treatment processes. The low energy required for the synthesis of Mag-PCMAs, relatively low cost (similar to$4/kg), ease of recovery with a magnetic field, and regenerability make them a much more sustainable option than more traditional approaches for removing EOCs, such as high energy granular activated carbon adsorption or advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract:The continuous upsurge in water pollution caused by harmful organic and inorganic contaminants has led to a shortage of nontoxic, clean water and effective waste management. Abstract:Photocatalysis, a promising technology for the removal of recalcitrant organic pollutants from wastewater has attracted global attention. The rational development of photocatalysts is crucial to the circular economy of photocatalytic water treatment. Furnishing highly efficient nanophotocatalysts with magnetism allows the breakthrough and practicability of the photocatalysis-involving processes inhibited by materials' poor recoverability. The strategy of embedding magnetic components in nanophotocatalysts and obtaining the magnetically recyclable nanophotocatalysts (MRNPCs) ensures the facile separation of photocatalyst materials from the treated water. The literature from 2012 to 2023 is reviewed to discuss the recent applications, mechanisms, and challenges of MRNPCs for organic pollutant removal. Various synthesis methods provide the desirable morphologies and properties of MRNPCs and therefore can be selected based on the application. In conventional photocatalysis, element doping, heterojunction construction, and hybrid material functionalization, have been applied to modify MRNPCs for better performance. Applications of MRNPCs in the photocatalysis-involving processes, including photocatalytic Fenton-like process, photocatalytic sulfate radical-based process, photocatalytic ozonation, and sono-photocatalytic process, are also overviewed. These processes have an increased production of reactive oxygen species, which ultimately improve the performance in contaminant removal. Furthermore, the perspectives and challenges of the MRNPCs are also discussed to shed light on the practicality of the technology.

Abstract:The presence of organic and inorganic pollutants in wastewater has led to the global need for the development of innovative and advanced, but operative technologies to successfully address the challenges of water quality in the best interest of society and environment. It has become, therefore, obligatory to propose efficient photocatalysts and degradation methods which would efficiently detoxify contaminants from wastewater. Different environmental pollution degradation process has been discovered, but photocatalytic process is effective among all of them. In this process, different semiconductor-based photocatalysts have been used. But the incorporation of conductive polymers with semiconductor-based materials is a promising approach to increase the efficiency of the photocatalysts. The unique properties of conductive polymers such as mechanical strength, recyclability of conductive polymer, thermal/electrical conductivity and biodegradability have enabled them in numerous exciting and novel applications including light-emitting diode, chemical sensors, fuel cells, heat exchangers, batteries, biosensors, especially for the detoxification of pollutants. In this review article, the summary of treatment methods, challenges for the materials, nanomaterials and conductive heterogeneous polymers are discussed. The synergistic effect between nanomaterials and conductive polymers was observed to demonstrate their synthesis methods, structure and photocatalytic efficiency. The integration of conductive polymers may result in expressively better photocatalytic activity owing to extending the light absorption-range, inhibiting photo-corrosion, reducing formation of large-aggregates, by improving the separation of charge carriers and increasing the reactant's adsorption.

Abstract:Water pollution induced by the tetracycline (TC) has caused global increasing attention owing to its extensive use, environmental persistence, and potential harm for human health. Adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been promising techniques for TC removal due to ideal effectiveness and efficiency. Magnetic composites (MCs) which exploit the combined advantages of nano scale, alternative sources, easy preparation, and separation from wastewater are widely used for catalysis and adsorption. Herein, we intensively reviewed the available literature in order to provide comprehensive insight into the applications and mechanisms of MCs for removal of TC by adsorption and AOPs. The synthesis methods of MCs, the TC adsorption, and removal mechanisms are fully discussed. MCs serve as efficient adsorbents and photocatalysts with superior performance of photocatalytic performance in TC degradation. In addition, the TC can be effectively decomposed by the Fenton-based and SO4•− mediated oxidation under catalysis of the reported MCs with excellent catalytic performance. Based on the existing literature, we further discuss the challenge and future perspectives in MCs-based adsorption and AOPs in removing TC.

Abstract:Although water occupies 75% of the earth's surface, only 0.0067% of the total water is available for human activities. These statistics further decline with the population growth and consequent multiplication in the amount of annual waste produced. The demand for clean and safe drinking water has always been a prime concern in the global scenario. Among various types of waste materials, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceutical effluents have become a constant threat to the aquatic ecosystem and possess challenges worldwide. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a mixed group of emerging concern chemicals with the ability to mimic the mechanisms of biosynthesis, transport, and metabolism of hormones. These chemicals pose various health threats such as early puberty, infertility, obesity, diabetes, reproductive disorders, cancerous tumors, and related disorders (immune cells, hormones' activity, and various organs). On the other hand, pharmaceutical compounds such as antibiotics also harm the natural environment, human health, and soil microbiology. Their low concentration, ranging from a few ng/L to μg/L, gives rise to a micro-pollution phenomenon, which makes it difficult to detect, analyze, and degrade in wastewater treatment plants. Activated carbons (ACs) and other adsorbents, including naturally occurring materials (wood, keratin) are considered as nanomaterials (NMs) reference for the separation of organic pollutants. It is generally acknowledged that mass-transfer phenomena control sorption kinetics at the liquid/solid interface, with retention controlled by the sorbent/sorbate properties. Therefore, the type of interaction (strong or weak van der Waals forces) and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the adsorbent are two crucial factors. Besides, EDCs and pharmaceutical compound sorption on such kinds of nanoporous solids depend on both the molecule size and charge density. The applications of nanomaterials on non-conservative methods, like advanced oxidation processes or AOPs (e.g., photocatalysis and Fenton reaction), are contemplated as more apt in comparison to conservative technology like reverse osmosis nanofiltration, and adsorption, etc. One of the reasons is that AOPs generate free radicals (hydroxyls), which are strong oxidants for the demineralization of organic compounds and the extreme case that hydroxyl radicals can attack any kinds of pollutants with the generation of only water and carbon dioxide as final products. AOPs may imply the use of NMs as either catalysts or photocatalysts, which improve the selective removal of the target pollutant. Therefore, various literature reviews have revealed that there is a timely need to upgrade the efficiency of the remediation approaches to protect the environment against EDCs and pharmaceuticals adequately. There is currently a lack of definitive risk assessment tools due to their complicated detection and associated insufficiency in the health risk database. Hence, our present review focuses on applying carbon-based nanomaterials to remove EDCs and pharmaceuticals from aqueous systems. The paper covers the effect of these pollutants and photocatalytic methods for treating these compounds in wastewater, along with their limitations and challenges, plausible solutions, and prospects of such techniques.

In recent years, increased discharge of toxic effluents into water bodies has severely harmed ecosystems and human well-being. Various techniques are employed to remove contaminants, among which photocatalysis have proven to be the most environment friendly and effective technique. This review focuses on MgFe 2 O 4 , an exceptional photocatalyst owing to their small band gap, spherical shape, magnetic responsivity, stability, reusability, cost-effectiveness and small crystallite size. We have covered comprehensive comparison of research studies from the past decade to assess. Magnesium ferrite's photocatalytic potential in pure, doped, and composite forms. Along with synthesis methods, degradation mechanisms, and shortcomings explained in detail. Furthermore, we have highlighted the enhanced photocatalytic capability of doped MgFe 2 O 4 and their nanocomposites towards the various organic contaminants upon visible light irradiation under a comparatively short period of time. Factors like cation distribution, dosage, pH, as well as methods for recovery and reuse are discussed to aid in production of more efficient photocatalysts. There has been a lack of information on the techniques that can be used to overcome the various shortcomings of MgFe 2 O 4 ferrite. Hence, we have accentuated on bringing forth such advanced techniques that would aid in driving the researchers' attention towards the practical and industrial application of the hybrid MgFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles. Lastly, the research gaps and industrial need of MgFe 2 O 4 ferrite-based materials were addressed to offer a concise view. Abstract:Oil spills are a major contributor to water contamination, which sets off a significant impact on the environment, biodiversity, and economy. Efficient removal of oil spills is needed for the protection of marine species as well as the environment. Conventional approaches are not efficient enough for oil-water separation; therefore, effective strategies and efficient removal techniques (and materials) must be developed to restore the contaminated marine to its normal ecology. Several research studies have shown that nanotechnology provides efficient features to clean up these oil spills from the water using magnetic nanomaterials, particularly carbon/polymer-based magnetic nanocomposites. Surface modification of these nanomaterials via different techniques render them with salient innovative features. The present review discusses the advantages and limitations of conventional and advanced techniques for the oil spills removal from wastewater. Furthermore, the synthesis of magnetic nanocomposites, their utilization in oil-water separation, and adsorption mechanisms are discussed. Finally, the advancement and future perspectives of magnetic nanocomposites (particularly of carbon and polymer-based magnetic nanocomposites) in environmental remediation are presented.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has emerged as an extraordinary and rapidly developing discipline of science. It has remolded the fate of the whole world by providing diverse horizons in different fields. Nanomaterials are appealing because of their incredibly small size and large surface area. Apart from the naturally occurring nanomaterials, synthetic nanomaterials are being prepared on large scales with different sizes and properties. Such nanomaterials are being utilized as an innovative and green approach in multiple fields. To expand the applications and enhance the properties of the nanomaterials, their functionalization and engineering are being performed on a massive scale. The functionalization helps to add to the existing useful properties of the nanomaterials, hence broadening the scope of their utilization. A large class of covalent and non-covalent functionalized nanomaterials (FNMs) including carbons, metal oxides, quantum dots, and composites of these materials with other organic or inorganic materials are being synthesized and used for environmental remediation applications including wastewater treatment. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis, reporting techniques, and applications of FNMs in adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of pollutants from wastewater. Future prospects are also examined, along with suggestions for attaining massive benefits in the areas of FNMs.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificially synthesised organic compounds extensively used in both industrial and consumer products owing to their unique characteristics. However, their persistence in the environment and potential risk to health have raised serious global concerns. Therefore, developing effective techniques to identify, eliminate, and degrade these pollutants in water are crucial. Owing to their high surface area, magnetic responsiveness, redox sensitivity, and ease of separation, magnetic materials have been considered for the treatment of PFASs from water in recent years. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent use of magnetic materials for the detection, removal, and degradation of PFASs in aqueous solutions. First, the use of magnetic materials for sensitive and precise detection of PFASs is addressed. Second, the adsorption of PFASs using magnetic materials is discussed. Several magnetic materials, including iron oxides, ferrites, and magnetic carbon composites, have been explored as efficient adsorbents for PFASs removal from water. Surface modification, functionalization, and composite fabrication have been employed to improve the adsorption effectiveness and selectivity of magnetic materials for PFASs. The final section of this review focuses on the advanced oxidation for PFASs using magnetic materials. This review suggests that magnetic materials have demonstrated considerable potential for use in various environmental remediation applications, as well as in the treatment of PFASs-contaminated water.
