Abstract:This paper aims to explore the impacts of connected and automated vehicles (CAV) on traffic flow efficiency based on in-depth microscopic simulation studies using cooperative gaming method. First, the Gipps car-following models were integrated into an improved cellular automata model to mimic the regular vehicle's driving behavior. Then, cooperative gaming method integrated with enhanced Q-learning was employed as the modeling platform for CAV, to strengthen the capability of the simulation system in realistically reproducing CAV lane changing and car following behavior. Finally, a 2-lane freeway stretch was applied to our simulations, and with extensive simulation studies we obtained some promising results. The study results suggest that the impacts of CAV are quite positive. The inclusion of CAV considerably improves traffic flow, mean speed, and traffic capacity. Such understanding is essential for research concerning CAV as well as the CAV implication for future traffic management and control.

Abstract:This paper proposes a generalized car-following (CF) model to depict the dynamics of traffic flow that includes human-driven vehicles (HDVs), connected vehicles (CVs) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). Notably, the model integrates human reaction times, information delays, and status data from multiple preceding vehicles endowed with communication capabilities. Then, by utilizing the perturbation method, the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) as an example is taken in this CF model to determine the stability condition of the mixed traffic based on CAV penetration rate and their spatial distribution. Finally, comprehensive co-simulation using PreScan and MATLAB/Simulink is developed to explore the impact of varying CAV penetration rates across seven distinct spatial distributions on traffic capacity and dynamic performance. The findings underscore the efficacy of our proposed model in analyzing mixed traffic scenarios comprising HDVs, CVs, and CAVs. Increasing CAV penetration rates can lead to improved stability, capacity, and dynamic performance within mixed traffic environments. Notably, at the CAV penetration rate below 60%, the spatial distribution labeled as CAVs-HDVs-CVs (where CAVs lead the traffic flow, followed by HDVs, then CVs) demonstrates superior dynamic performance, whereas the HDVs-CVs-CAVs configuration (with HDVs leading, followed by CVs, then CAVs) performs worst. However, it’s noteworthy that spatial distribution scarcely affects dynamic performance when the CAV penetration rate exceeds 60%.

Abstract:The platooning management technology for Connected Automated Vehicles (CAVs) can potentially increase the efficiency of the traffic system. However, the randomness in the spatial distribution of CAVs poses a new challenge for CAVs' platooning strategy in mixed traffic flow. To effectively utilize the advantages of platooning technology, this paper proposes a platoon-aware cooperative lane-changing (PCLC) strategy inspired by platoon formation. This strategy focuses on the formation of CAV platoons in mixed traffic flow and restructures the spatial distribution of CAVs on the road segment. First, the cooperative lane-changing behavior of CAVs is modeled based on vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and a gap suitable for lane-changing is created by controlling the acceleration of cooperative CAVs to complete the lane-changing process smoothly. Meanwhile, considering the maximum platoon size, a decision-making framework of cooperative lane-changing for CAVs is designed. Then, considering the change in spatial distribution of CAVs (i.e., platoon intensity) caused by PCLC, the impact of PCLC on traffic capacity is analyzed from theoretical and numerical verification perspectives. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted to investigate the impact of PCLC on lane-changing indicators, traffic flow stability, and traffic efficiency. The simulation experiments show that compared with the discretionary lane-changing (DLC) operation, the PCLC strategy may reduce the lane-changing rate and raise the average platoon size on road segments, increasing road capacity. In addition, the vehicles on the road segment have modest swings in average speed and acceleration, proving the safety and stability of the proposed strategy. Particularly, scenarios with moderate to heavy traffic flow and fairly balanced CAVs penetration rates favor the effectiveness of this strategy. With 50% CAVs and moderate traffic density, the lane capacity increases by 450 veh/h and improves by 10.135%. These findings support the ability of PCLC strategy to reduce traffic congestion and effectively explore traffic management strategies for mixed traffic flow.

Abstract:Connected Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) platoon was recently proposed to improve road utilization and reduce fuel consumption. However, the mixed traffic flow of CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) will exist on the road for a long time; thus, the organization of CAVs needs to be reconsidered from the aspects of the platoon forming strategy. In this paper, a novel cooperative platoon forming (CPF) strategy is proposed to enhance the formation of CAV platoons in mixed traffic flows. A four-lane cellular automaton traffic modeling framework is constructed to simulate the interaction between CAVs and HDVs. Numerical results show that the CPF strategy is effective in enabling CAVs to be assembled into platoons. The increase in the CAV penetration rate can effectively alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic capacity, thereby improving traffic flow and fuel economy. The findings may help improve the management of vehicle platoons.

Abstract:With the development of automated driving technology and communication technology, the emergence of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) will significantly improve traffic efficiency and safety. To study the influence of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) on mixed traffic flow, this study proposes a cellular automata (CA) model of mixed traffic flow considering the driving behavior of the platoon of CAVs. Firstly, three car-following modes, Human-driven vehicle (HDV), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), in mixed traffic flow are analyzed. Secondly, on the bias of the safety distance model and platoon behavior analysis, the acceleration, deceleration, and randomization rules of the cellular automata model of mixed traffic flow are developed. The time step is introduced into the model in the rule design, and the reaction time of the vehicle is considered in the randomization rule. Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted to analyze the fundamental diagram of mixed traffic flow, traffic congestion, and speed volatility under different penetration rates of CAVs. The result shows that (1) the road capacity under the pure CAV environment has increased by 3.24 times compared with the pure HDVs; (2) the maximum congestion reduction percentage can reach 63.36%; and (3) when the penetration rate reaches 80%, the velocity fluctuation decreases significantly. Sensitivity analysis shows that when the penetration rate of CAVs is 100%, the maximum platoon size increase can improve the road capacity. Furthermore, the maximum platoon size has an optimal value in a specific density range.
Analysis of the impact of heterogeneous platoon for mixed traffic flow: control strategy, fuel consumption and emissions

Abstract:Compared with traditional vehicle longitudinal spacing control strategies, the combination spacing strategy can integrate the advantages of different spacing control strategies. However, the impact mechanism of different combination spacing control strategies on mixed traffic flow has not been analyzed yet. Therefore, this paper proposes various combination spacing control strategies for connected automated vehicles (CAVs). First, a mixed traffic flow model was developed to analyze the characteristics of CAV platoons. On this basis, a probability model of vehicle distribution was derived, and its effectiveness was verified through simulation. Then, multiple spacing combination strategies are proposed based on four spacing control strategies. Finally, numerical experiments were conducted to calculate the average fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of mixed traffic flow under different spacing control strategies, and the impact of platoon spacing control strategies on traffic flow fuel consumption and pollutant emissions was further analyzed. Results show that: (1) the differences in average fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of traffic flow are relatively small under different platoon spacing control strategies under low traffic density (i.e., 15 veh/km); (2) at medium to high traffic densities (i.e., 55-95 veh/km), when the penetration rate of CAVs exceeds 80%, VTG1-CS, VTG2-CS, and CTG-CS strategies can effectively ensure traffic flow stability and safety, and significantly reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

Abstract:To solve the problems of congestion and accident risk when multiple vehicles merge into the merging area of a freeway, a platoon split collaborative merging (PSCM) method was proposed for an on-ramp connected and automated vehicle (CAV) platoon under a mixed traffic environment composed of human-driving vehicles (HDV) and CAVs. The PSCM method mainly includes two parts: merging vehicle motion control and merging effect evaluation. Firstly, the collision avoidance constraints of merging vehicles were analyzed, and on this basis, a following–merging motion rule was proposed. Then, considering the feasibility of and constraints on the stability of traffic flow during merging, a performance measurement function with safety and merging efficiency as optimization objectives was established to screen for the optimal splitting strategy. Simulation experiments under traffic demand of 1500 pcu/h/lane and CAV ratios of 30%, 50%, and 70% were conducted respectively. It was shown that under the 50% CAV ratio, the average travel time of the on-ramp CAV platoon was reduced by 50.7% under the optimal platoon split strategy compared with the no-split control strategy. In addition, the average travel time of main road vehicles was reduced by 27.9%. Thus, the proposed PSCM method is suitable for the merging control of on-ramp CAV platoons under the condition of heavy main road traffic demand.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the characteristics of mixed traffic flow with maximum platoon size of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) based on analytical and simulation methods. First, we discuss the car-following and headway types of mixed traffic flows with human-driven vehicles (HDVs), connected human-driven vehicles (CHVs), automated vehicles (AVs), and CAVs. Second, the probability distribution of the CAVs platoon size is derived based on the Markov chain model. Subsequently, the capacity model and stability condition of mixed traffic flow are proposed based on the probability distribution of the CAVs platoon size, and some characteristics of the influence of the maximum platoon size on traffic capacity and stability are analyzed. A numerical experi-ment based on car-following models was conducted to investigate the effect of the maximum platoon size on capacity, stability, safety, fuel consumption, and emission of mixed traffic flow. The results show that (1) the capacity of mixed traffic flow increases with the maximum platoon size of CAVs; (2) the stability of mixed traffic flow deteriorates with the increase in the maximum platoon size of CAVs; (3) the safety risk of vehicles in mixed traffic flow increases with the maximum platoon size of CAVs; (4) the fuel consumption and emissions (e.g., CO, HC, and NOx) increase with the maximum platoon size of CAVs. This indicates that the larger maximum platoon size can only improve traffic capacity, which is not conducive to the stability, safety, fuel con-sumption, and emissions of mixed traffic flow.

Abstract:The cooperation between connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has emerged as a promising way to improve traffic efficiency and safety for ramp merging on highways. Existing research mostly focused on the collaboration of individual CAVs, while the cooperative merging strategy in mixed traffic considering vehicle platoons has been less explored. To address the above problem, this study aims to build connections between sequence scheduling and motion planning in mixed traffic, where individual CAVs, CAVs platoons, and mixed platoons coexist. First, optimal control strategies are presented for vehicles with flexible merging points based on Pontryagin’s minimum principle (PMP), and the final vehicle states in variable conditions are summarized in a phase diagram. Subsequently, the optimal final-state phase diagram is introduced into the passing sequence tree search process, which is designed for different vehicle groups in mixed traffic. Heuristic pruning rules are added to the depth-first search strategy to facilitate finding the optimal solution. Finally, an event-triggered receding horizon optimization algorithm is developed for continuous implementation. The numerical simulations are conducted in multiple traffic volumes, and the simulation results reveal that our proposed algorithm significantly improves the overall traffic efficiency and reduces vehicle-passing delays compared with the traditional FIFO-based cooperation method.

Abstract:There has been renewed interest in examining the multiple causes of undernutrition and growth failure in cystic fibrosis. It is now recognized that undernutrition is caused by unfavourable energy balance rather than an inherent component of the disease. Furthermore, there appears to be a direct association between the degree of undernutrition and the severity of pulmonary disease, which in turn affects overall prognosis. Energy imbalance may be caused by three main factors: increased energy loss because of nutrient maldigestion; reduced energy intake due to an improper diet and/or anorexia from respiratory disease, abdominal symptoms or clinical depression and increased energy expenditure with advanced lung disease. Most patients are capable of compensating for these factors; provided energy intake is sufficient, normal growth velocity and nutritional status is maintained. However, in a minority of older patients, when advanced lung disease supervenes, energy expenditure rises resulting in an energy deficit. Undernutrition, with loss of energy stores and lean tissue may in turn contribute to progressive deterioration of lung function. When this occurs, long-term invasive methods of nutritional support can restore energy balance.

Abstract:This study mainly investigates the maximum length of CAV (Connected and Autonomous Vehicle) platoons in a heterogeneous traffic flow environment. By employing MATLAB to simulate the heterogeneous traffic flow on expressways, this study focuses on the maximum platoon length of CAV platoons and explores their impact on the traffic flow characteristics on expressways. Firstly, based on four different car-following modes of heterogeneous traffic flow, F-STCA (Flexible–Symmetric Two-Lane Cellular Automata Model) and the symmetric lane-changing strategy, the study refines and improves the construction of the NaSch (Nagel and Schreckenberg) model introduced into the Gipps safety distance formula. The whole improvement process is based on the acceleration decay characteristics of vehicles on expressway. Secondly, the congestion situations under different maximum platoon lengths are compared using fundamental heat maps of the simulation data. The evolution of the fundamental diagram with changes in maximum platoon length is studied to investigate the impact and magnitude of maximum platoon lengths on the road capacity under different CAV permeabilities. Finally, the study explores the stability and safety of heterogeneous traffic flow involving CAV platoons using SD (Standard Deviation) and TERCRI (Time-Exposed Rear-End Collision Risk Index). The results show that when the CAV's permeability does not reach a high level on heavily trafficked sections of the expressway, considering the overall average speed, the maximum platoon length should not be set too long and should be around five vehicles. This restriction does not apply when the CAV permeability approaches 100%.

Analysis of Mixed Traffic Flow Characteristics Based on Cellular Automata Model under Lane Management Measures

Abstract:In the future, mixed traffic flow comprising Human-Driven Vehicles (HDVs), Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), and CAV platoons will coexist for an extended period. Exploring the operational characteristics of mixed traffic flow under different lane management measures is essential for effective management and control. Initially, we analyze the motion characteristics of HDVs, CAVs, and CAV platoons and identify the car-following types within mixed traffic. Based on vehicle motion characteristics and the variance in maximum desired speeds among HDV drivers, we establish longitudinal motion rules for HDVs using a safety distance model. For CAVs and their platoons, we develop longitudinal motion rules by considering platoon merging and splitting behaviors, as well as speed and spacing error requirements for platoon driving. Subsequently, we formulate lateral lane-change rules based on the Symmetric Two-lane Cellular Automata (STCA) model, considering differences in reaction times and following distances between HDVs and CAVs. Finally, we conducted simulation experiments on a unidirectional three-lane highway using the multi-lane mixed traffic flow cellular automata model, analyzing the characteristics of mixed traffic under various lane management measures, such as mixed lane, CAV-dedicated lane, and CAV-priority lane. The results show that as the proportion of CAV (denoted as p) increases, the traffic flow capacity, optimal density, and jam density also increase. When p <= 0.6, the k-q diagram exhibits a triangular shape, whereas for p>0.6, it assumes a trapezoidal shape. Implementing CAV-dedicated lane can reduce Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) degradation rates but only enhances traffic flow capacity when the CAV proportion reaches a certain threshold. Compared to the mixed lane scheme, when p <= 0.3 and k <= 0.3, the CAV-priority lane schemes not only meet traffic demands but also reduce CACC degradation rates. The vehicle speed in CAV-priority lane surpasses that in HDV lanes, facilitating improved traffic efficiency for CAVs. The distribution of maximum speeds among HDV drivers affects the fundamental diagram of mixed traffic flow and the performance of CAV-priority lane, with greater impacts observed as the standard deviation of the HDVs' maximum speed increases.

Abstract:Vehicle platoons equipped with cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) have the potential to improve traffic stability and reduce congestion. Existing CACC research lacks micro-level trajectory cluster observation regarding the impact of heterogeneous CACC platoons—comprising vehicles with different types and characteristics—on mixed traffic flow. This study implements a simulation framework that creates a realistic mixed traffic flow consisting of manual driving vehicles (HDVs) and heterogeneous CACC platoons on highway merging areas. By adjusting four influential factors: traffic volume, truck ratio, CACC market penetration rate (MPR), and CACC platoon size, a series of high-resolution trajectory data were obtained to analyze their influence on traffic flow characteristics. Subsequent analysis, using both quantitative statistical measures and visual demonstrations, revealed that higher traffic volumes and truck ratios lead to an expansion of congested areas. Whereas increasing the MPR of CACC platoons can alleviate this issue by reducing the overall oscillation level and actual traffic density, encouraging more vehicles to change lanes, thus blending clusters of high- and low-speed vehicles. However, the impact of increasing CACC Platoon size in a small range remains insignificant. This study can serve as a reference for investigating the mechanisms behind the impact of heterogeneous CACC platoons on the mixed traffic flow pattern.
Analysis and Design of Vehicle Platooning Operations on Mixed-Traffic Highways

Abstract:Platooning of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) has a significant potential for throughput improvement. However, the interaction between CAVs and non-CAVs may limit the practically attainable improvement due to platooning. To better understand and address this limitation, we introduce a new fluid model of mixed-autonomy traffic flow and use this model to analyze and design platoon coordination strategies. We propose tandem-link fluid model that considers randomly arriving platoons sharing highway capacity with non-CAVs. We derive verifiable conditions for stability of the fluid model by analyzing an underlying M/D/1 queuing process and establishing a Foster-Lyapunov drift condition for the fluid model. These stability conditions enable a quantitative analysis of highway throughput under various scenarios. The model is useful for designing platoon coordination strategies that maximize throughput and minimize delay. Such coordination strategies are provably optimal in the fluid model and are practically relevant. We also validate our results using standard macroscopic (cell transmission model, CTM) and microscopic (Simulation for Urban Mobility, SUMO) simulation models.

Abstract:This study seeks to develop a cooperative platoon control for a platoon mixed with connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and human-drive vehicles (HDVs), aiming to ensure system level traffic flow smoothness and stability as well as individual vehicles’ mobility and safety. Specifically, our study integrated/contributed the following technical approaches. First, the car-following behavior of human-drive vehicles is modeled by well-accepted Newell car-following models. Accordingly, an online curve matching algorithm is integrated to anticipate the aggregated response delay of the human-drive vehicles using real-time trajectory data. Built upon that, constrained One- or P-step MPC models are developed to control the movement of the CAV platoon upstream or downstream of the HDV platoon so that we can ensure both transient traffic smoothness and asymptotic stability of this sample mixed flow platoon, leveraging the communication and computation technologies equipped on CAVs. Considering the lack of the centralized computation facilities and severe changes of the platoon topology, this study develops a distributed algorithm to solve the MPCs according to the properties of the optimizers, such as solution uniqueness, sequentially feasibility, and nonempty interior point of the solution space. The convergence of the distributed algorithm as well as the stability of the MPC control is proved by both the theoretical analysis and the experimental study. Extensive numerical experiments based on the field data indicate that the distributed algorithm can solve the One-step and P-step MPCs efficiently. The cooperative MPC can dampen traffic oscillation propagation and stabilize the traffic flow more efficiently for the entire mixed flow platoon. Moreover, the cooperative platoon control scheme outperforms the other three control strategies, including the non-cooperative control strategy and a latest CACC strategy in literature.
Hindrance-Aware Platoon Formation for Connected Vehicles in Mixed Traffic

Abstract:Aiming at traffic efficiency improvement, vehicle platoon becomes an essential driving technique to control the synchronous driving of connected and automated vehicles. Since the mature automated driving technology and cooperative willingness cannot be ensured for all vehicles, a mixed traffic paradigm that incorporates both cooperative vehicles (CVs) and non-cooperative vehicles (NCVs) will be inevitable. Due to the traffic hindrance and intermittent connections caused by the randomly distributed NCVs, traffic efficiency would be limited in the mixed traffic. Therefore, a hindrance-aware platoon formation scheme is proposed for the mixed traffic in this paper, which aims at coordinating CVs to maximize overall traffic velocity while minimize collision risk and fuel consumption. Specifically, a vehicle connection model is first established to construct the hindrance-aware relationships among vehicles, based on which, the intermittent connections of CVs are formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. To reduce the search space, a novel cross-vehicle matrix is designed to represent the hindrances that each CV faces, then a traffic-maneuver-tree construction algorithm is proposed to search for feasible and hindrance-aware platoon formation connections. A length-dynamic inverse influence zone is constructed, then two decision indicators of platoon leader and follower are decoupled by evaluating leadership qualifications of all CVs. Given the hindrance-aware connections and leadership qualifications, a hindrance-aware platoon formation algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the speed, safety and energy efficiency of CVs. To verify the effectiveness of the platoon formation mechanism, extensive simulations are conducted, and the results reveal that the road utilization, traffic capacity improvement and safety assurance in mixed traffic can be enhanced.

Abstract:Recent technological development allows a queue of vehicles to be driven safely close to each other, which increases road utilization and reduces air drag, thus, resulting in significant energy savings. The queue of vehicles that follow one another in close succession is called a vehicle platoon. In the early stages of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) platooning, CAVs are expected to form platoons at their departure point according to an appropriate platoon formation policy. However, the effect of platoon formation policy on traffic capacity is rarely considered. This paper analyzes the effect of platoon formation policy and platoon size on the capacity of mixed traffic flow with CAVs, autonomous vehicles, and human-driven vehicles. First, given platoon size distribution, we derive the probability mass function for the position of an arbitrary CAV within a platoon and obtain mixed traffic capacity as a function of CAV penetration rate and average platoon size. The platoon size is heavily influenced by platoon formation policies. So, the platoon size distributions are derived for several platoon formation policies and are applied to obtain the mixed traffic capacities under the platoon formation policies. Some numerical examples are also provided to demonstrate how the key parameters of platoon formation policies affect the mixed traffic capacity.

Abstract:Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) hold great potential to improve traffic efficiency, emissions and safety in freeway on-ramp bottlenecks through coordination between mainstream and on-ramp vehicles. This study proposes a bi-level coordination strategy for freeway on-ramp merging of mixed traffic consisting of CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) to optimize the overall traffic efficiency and safety in congested traffic scenarios at the traffic flow level instead of platoon levels. The macro level employs an optimization model based on fundamental diagrams and shock wave theories to make optimal coordination decisions, including optimal minimum merging platoon size to trigger merging coordination and optimal coordination speed, based on macroscopic traffic state in mainline and ramp (i.e., traffic volume and penetration rates of CAVs). Furthermore, the micro level determines the real platoon size in each merging cycle as per random arrival patterns and designs the coordinated trajectories of the mainline facilitating vehicle and ramp platoon. A receding horizon scheme is implemented to accommodate human drivers’ stochastics as well. The developed bi-level strategy is tested in terms of improving efficiency and safety in a simulation-based case study under various traffic volumes and CAV penetration rates. The results show the proposed coordination addresses the uncertainties in mixed traffic as expected and substantially improves ramp merging operation in terms of merging efficiency and traffic robustness, and reducing collision risk and emissions, especially under high traffic volume conditions.

Abstract:Traffic congestion in ramp merge areas, which are bottleneck areas in freeway systems, has been alleviated by traditional research methods. However, with the maturation of autonomous driving technology, control methods can shift to information-based real-time control, which aids in improving ramp merging. In this paper, we propose a ramp merging control method that integrates platoon control. This method pre-allocates vehicles in mixed traffic into platoons, utilizing the lead CAV for speed guidance to lead several HDVs. The paper also introduces a scheme to redistribute downstream gaps, leveraging information sharing and automation technologies among vehicles to control the speed of mainline vehicles. The goal is to allocate excess downstream gaps to the merging area to accommodate the ramp vehicle platoon. Our simulations validate the method, comparing uncontrolled and controlled scenarios for vehicle speeds and accelerations, highlighting the potential to lower overall travel costs while maintaining flow.

Abstract:Increasing attention is being paid to intersection signal control with cooperative platoons. Assuming platoons being formed, such platoons cannot only improve the intersection capacity but also minimize the number of control units, especially when dedicated connected and automated vehicle (CAV) lanes are considered. However, the platoon formation process is often neglected, especially for lane-changing and overtaking maneuvers in mixed traffic. This may jeopardize the potential of signal control with platoons. This article proposes a platoon formation algorithm that computes the optimal lane, platoon sequence, and speed profiles of CAVs under the requirement of the central traffic controller. The algorithm is designed for mixed traffic conditions and hence the performance of human-driven vehicles is also considered. A mixed integer linear program model is formulated to minimize the deviation from the desired platoon configuration and the disturbance to overall traffic under any arbitrary initial condition. Numerical experiments are designed to test the effectiveness and the computational performance of the proposed algorithm. Results show that CAVs with signal control can form platoons with rational motion. Besides, the platoon penetration significantly affects platooning feasibility, while the platoon length does not. This suggests that CAVs can form long platoons at intersections to improve traffic throughput.
