Abstract:CLINICAL CASE We report the case of an 81-day-old female infant who was brought to the Emergency Department because of a seizure. At 20 weeks of gestational age she was diagnosed to have agenesis of the corpus callosum, with this being confirmed later by magnetic resonance imaging. Ophthalmological examination of the fundus showed peripapillar chorioretinal lesions (lacunar chorioretinopathy) in both eyes. DISCUSSION Chorioretinal lacunar and retinal pigment epithelial abnormalities are the basis for the diagnosis of this syndrome.
Cardiorespiratory fitness is a strong and consistent predictor of morbidity and mortality among adults: an overview of meta-analyses representing over 20.9 million observations from 199 unique cohort studies

Abstract:Objective To examine and summarise evidence from meta-analyses of cohort studies that evaluated the predictive associations between baseline cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and health outcomes among adults. Design Overview of systematic reviews. Data source Five bibliographic databases were searched from January 2002 to March 2024. Results From the 9062 papers identified, we included 26 systematic reviews. We found eight meta-analyses that described five unique mortality outcomes among general populations. CRF had the largest risk reduction for all-cause mortality when comparing high versus low CRF (HR=0.47; 95% CI 0.39 to 0.56). A dose–response relationship for every 1-metabolic equivalent of task (MET) higher level of CRF was associated with a 11%–17% reduction in all-cause mortality (HR=0.89; 95% CI 0.86 to 0.92, and HR=0.83; 95% CI 0.78 to 0.88). For incident outcomes, nine meta-analyses described 12 unique outcomes. CRF was associated with the largest risk reduction in incident heart failure when comparing high versus low CRF (HR=0.31; 95% CI 0.19 to 0.49). A dose–response relationship for every 1-MET higher level of CRF was associated with a 18% reduction in heart failure (HR=0.82; 95% CI 0.79 to 0.84). Among those living with chronic conditions, nine meta-analyses described four unique outcomes in nine patient groups. CRF was associated with the largest risk reduction for cardiovascular mortality among those living with cardiovascular disease when comparing high versus low CRF (HR=0.27; 95% CI 0.16 to 0.48). The certainty of the evidence across all studies ranged from very low-to-moderate according to Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations. Conclusion We found consistent evidence that high CRF is strongly associated with lower risk for a variety of mortality and incident chronic conditions in general and clinical populations.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and long-term survival in United States (US) Veterans undergoing CABG. We identified 14,550 US Veterans who underwent CABG at least six months after completing a symptom-limited exercise treadmill test (ETT) with no evidence of cardiovascular disease. During a mean follow-up period of 10.0 ± 5.4 years, 6502 (43.0%) died. To assess the association between CRF and risk of mortality, we formed the following five fitness categories based on peak workload achieved (metabolic equivalents or METs) prior to CABG: Least-Fit (4.3 ± 1.0 METs (n = 4722)), Low-Fit (6.8 ± 0.9 METs (n = 3788)), Moderate-Fit (8.3 ± 1.1 METs (n = 2608)), Fit (10.2 ± 0.8 METs (n = 2613)), and High-Fit (13.0 ± 1.5 METs (n = 819)). Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate risk across CRF categories. The models were adjusted for age, body mass index, race, cardiovascular disease, percutaneous coronary intervention prior to ETT, cardiovascular medications, and cardiovascular disease risk factors. P-values < 0.05 using two-sided tests were considered statistically significant. The association between cardiorespiratory fitness and mortality was inverse and graded. For every 1-MET increase in exercise capacity, the mortality risk was 11% lower (HR = 0.89; CI: 0.88–0.90; p < 0.001). When compared to the Least-Fit category (referent), mortality risk was 22% lower in Low-Fit individuals (HR = 0.78; CI: 0.73–0.82; p < 0.001), 31% lower in Moderate-Fit individuals (HR = 0.69; CI: 0.64–0.74; p < 0.001), 52% lower in Fit individuals (HR = 0.48; CI: 0.44–0.52; p < 0.001), and 66% lower in High-Fit individuals (HR = 0.34; CI: 0.29–0.40; p < 0.001). Cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely and independently associated with long-term mortality after CABG in Veterans referred for exercise testing.

A hybrid representation of environment models in image-based real time walkthrough

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid representation of environment models using a combination of points and polygons is proposed. Through the model, a real time walkthrough of a complex environment can be achieved. We start from multiple depth reference images and classify the pixels of images into two categories, corresponding respectively to planar and non-planar surfaces in 3D space, then all the redundant points are removed by a comparison algorithm of sampling rate. For pixels corresponding to nonplanar surfaces, the point representation is maintained, and a local reconstruction and resampling process is employed to re-sample a set of points that distribute more uniformly on the surfaces. The re-sampled points are organized by an OBB-tree according to their space coordinates and a multiresolution structure is built to improve the rendering efficiency. For pixels corresponding to planar surfaces, the plane coefficients are reconstructed and all their appearances in the reference images are merged to texture maps. Under this hybrid representation, texture mapping and point-based rendering are employed to render the novel views, to take full advantage of the acceleration utility of graphics hardware. The algorithm demonstrates the combined advantages of approaches in traditional computer graphics and PBR/IBR, texture mapping for plane surfaces and point-based rendering for high detail surfaces and shapes.
Submaximal fitness and mortality risk reduction in coronary heart disease: a retrospective cohort study of community-based exercise rehabilitation

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between submaximal cardiorespiratory fitness (sCRF) and all-cause mortality in a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) cohort.DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of participants entering CR between 26 May 1993 and 16 October 2006, followed up to 1 November 2013 (median 14 years, range 1.2-19.4 years).SETTING: A community-based CR exercise programme in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK.PARTICIPANTS: A cohort of 534 men (76%) and 136 women with a clinical diagnosis of coronary heart disease (CHD), aged 22-82 years, attending CR were evaluated for the association between baseline sCRF and all-cause mortality. 416 participants with an exercise test following CR (median 14 weeks) were examined for changes in sCRF and all-cause mortality.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All-cause mortality and change in sCRF expressed in estimated metabolic equivalents (METs).RESULTS: Baseline sCRF was a strong predictor of all-cause mortality; compared to the lowest sCRF group (<5 METs for women and <6 METs for men), mortality risk was 41% lower in those with moderate sCRF (HR 0.59; 95% CI 0.42 to 0.83) and 60% lower (HR 0.40; 95% CI 0.25 to 0.64) in those with higher sCRF levels (≥7 METs women and ≥8 METs for men). Although improvement in sCRF at 14 weeks was not associated with a significant mortality risk reduction (HR 0.91; 95% CI 0.79 to 1.06) for the whole cohort, in those with the lowest sCRF (and highest all-cause mortality) at baseline, each 1-MET improvement was associated with a 27% age-adjusted reduction in mortality risk (HR 0.73; 95% CI 0.57 to 0.94).CONCLUSIONS: Higher baseline sCRF is associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality over 14 years in adults with CHD. Improving fitness through exercise-based CR is associated with significant risk reduction for the least fit.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction Studies have shown an inverse association between the risk of breast cancer in women and physical activity. However, information on the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) assessed objectively by a standardized test and the risk of developing breast cancer is limited. Purpose To examine the CRF-breast cancer risk association in healthy females. Methods This retrospective study was derived from the ETHOS cohort (n = 750,302). Female participants (n = 44,463; mean age ± SD; 55.1 ± 8.9 years) who completed an exercise treadmill (ETT) test evaluation (Bruce protocol) at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers nationwide from 1999 to 2020 were studied. The cohort was stratified into four age-specific CRF categories (Least-fit, Low-fit, Moderate-fit, and Fit), based on the peak metabolic equivalents (METs) achieved during the ETT. Results During 438,613 person-years of observation, 994 women developed breast cancer. After controlling for covariates, the risk of breast cancer was inversely related to exercise capacity. For each 1-MET increase in CRF the risk of cancer was 7% lower (HR 0.93; 95% CI, 0.90-0.95; P < .001). When risk was assessed across CRF categories with the Least-fit group as the referent, the risk was 18% lower for Low-fit women (HR 0.82; 95% CI, 0.70-0.96; P = .013), 31% for Moderate-fit (HR 0.69; 95% CI, 0.58-0.82; P < .001) and 40% for Fit (HR 0.60; 95% CI, 0.47-0.75; P < .001). Conclusions We observed an inverse and graded association between CRF and breast cancer risk in women. Thus, encouraging women to improve CRF may help attenuate the risk of developing breast cancer.

How Mate Availability Influences Filial Cannibalism

Abstract:Parents sometimes eat their young to reduce the consequences of brood overcrowding, for nutritional gain, and/or to redirect investment toward future reproduction. It has been predicted that filial cannibalism should be more prevalent when mate availability is high as parents can more easily replace consumed young. Reviewing the available evidence—which comes almost exclusively from studies of paternal caring fish—we find support in some species, but not others. To explain this, we hypothesize that sexual selection against filial cannibalism and/or the tendency to acquire larger broods under conditions of high mate availability discourages filial cannibalism. Additionally, filial cannibalism might occur when mate availability is low to facilitate survival until access to mates improves. Since attractiveness can also influence remating opportunities, we review its effect on filial cannibalism, finding that attractive parents engage in less filial cannibalism. More research is needed to determine if this relationship is a result of individuals showing adaptive plasticity in filial cannibalism based on self-perceived attractiveness, or if the attractiveness of individuals is reduced by their propensity to commit filial cannibalism. More generally, to advance our understanding of how mate availability influences filial cannibalism, future studies should also focus on a wider range of taxa.
Association of estimated cardiorespiratory fitness in middle-aged and elderly people with cardiovascular disease: Evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study

Abstract:Background and aim: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is a major threat to public health, while cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a key predictor of chronic disease. Given this, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between estimated CRF (eCRF) and CVD in middle-aged and elderly Chinese people. Methods and results: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) with 4761 individuals were included in analysis. Participants were divided into three groups according to eCRF quantile in sex subgroups. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to explore the correlation of eCRF with CVD (stroke or cardiac events). In total, 4761 participants were included in this cohort study (2500 [52.51%] women). During a 7-year follow-up from 2011 to 2018, 796 CVDs (268 Strokes and 588 cardiac events) were recorded. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, for per 1 SD increase of eCRF, the age-adjusted risk of CVD was reduced by about 18% (HR = 0.82; 95% CI, 0.72-0.93) in men, and was reduced by about 29% (HR = 0.71; 95% CI, 0.62-0.81) in women. Similar associations were also found between eCRF and stroke and cardiac events. Both subgroup and interaction analyses showed that the interaction of age had a statistically significant effect on CVD risk. Conclusion: ECRF was inversely associated with CVD risk (stroke or cardiac events) in both men and women. Remarkable sex and age differences exist in the effectiveness of increasing eCRF to reduce the risk of CVD. As a potential, efficient and cost-effective risk prediction tool, eCRF deserves further attention and wide application.

Abstract:In this paper, different Hf-based oxides (HfO2, HfSiO under several annealing conditions, HfSiON, HfAlO with various compositions) are simultaneously considered as storage layers of charge-trap memories. Based on material characterization analyses, electrical data of memory cells, physical modeling of charge-trap devices, we show that a strict relationship exists between the crystal structure of the storage layer and the memory performances. The obtained results clearly demonstrate the high interest of HfO2 dielectric as possible storage layer of future NROM-like memory devices

Abstract:There has only been one study examining the effect of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on blood glucose with aging among Americans. Whether CRF also has a similar effect on aging-associated change in blood glucose among Japanese with have lower prevalence of obesity as compared with Americans. PURPOSE: To investigate whether the aging-related increase of glucose in Japanese men with higher CRF is smaller than that of those with lower CRF. METHODS: We studied 6,153 Japanese men (age: 20-60 y) free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke in 1986. The participants completed annual health examinations including fasting blood glucose until 2009. CRF was measured by a submaximal exercise test between 1979 and 1986. Participants were divided into quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) for CRF based on the cumulative mean of CRF during the period. Time-invariant covariates included BMI, smoking status, drinking habit, desk work, family history of diabetes, and frequency of measurements of blood glucose, and time-variant covariates included systolic blood pressure and fasting blood triglyceride. The trajectories of glucose with aging were analyzed using linear mixed models. RESULTS: Fasting glucose increased at a linear rate with aging. Glucose increased at a yearly rate of 0.49 mg/dL (95% confidence interval: 0.48-0.50). After adjustment for covariates, the aging-related glucose increase in men with Q4 of CRF (0.42 [0.40-0.44] mg/dL per year) was smaller than that in men with Q1 (0.55 mg/dL [0.50-0.60] per year), Q2 (0.51 mg/dL [0.46-0.56] per year), Q3 (0.48 mg/dL [0.42-0.53] per year), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Higher levels of CRF is inversely associated with the increase in blood glucose with aging among Japanese healthy men.

Abstract:Background Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) could reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) while the association between muscular endurance capacity (MEC) and incident MetS has rarely been investigated in young adults. Methods A total of 2890 military men and women, aged 18–39 years, free of baseline MetS in Taiwan, were followed for incident MetS from baseline (2014) until the end of 2020. All subjects received annual health examinations for assessment of MetS. Physical fitness was assessed by CRF (estimated maximal oxygen uptake, VO2 max [mL/kg/min], in a 3000‐m run) and MEC (numbers of 2‐min push‐ups). MetS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Multiple Cox regression analysis was conducted with adjustments for baseline age, sex, substance use status and physical activity to determine the associations of CRF and MEC with incidences of new‐onset MetS and related features, for example, central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and prediabetes or diabetes. To examine the combined effects of CRF and MEC status on incidence of MetS, high and low levels of CRF and MEC were separately defined by over and under the sex‐specific median in each exercise test. Results During a median follow‐up of 5.8 years, there were 673 (23.3%) new‐onset MetS. Higher CRF was associated with a lower incidence of MetS (hazard ratio [HR] and 95% confidence interval: 0.905 [0.877–0.933]), and its components separately, except hypertension. No association was observed between MEC and incident MetS, and its components separately, except hypertension. When evaluating the combined effects of MEC and CRF status on the incidence of MetS, it was observed that compared with the low CRF/low MEC, the high CRF/high MEC (HR: 0.553 [0.439–0.697]) and the high CRF/low MEC (HR: 0.730 [0.580–0.918]) had a lower incidence of new‐onset MetS (P value for the intergroup difference = 0.04). There was no significant result for the low CRF/high MEC. Conclusions This study highlights that although the protective effects of MEC to reduce the incidence of MetS and most of its related features were mainly driven by CRF in young adults, there was an addictive effect of greater MEC on CRF to prevent the development of new‐onset MetS before midlife.

Abstract:Despite the wide effects of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on metabolic, cardiovascular, pulmonary and neurological health, challenges in the feasibility and reproducibility of CRF measurements have impeded its use for clinical decision-making. Here we link proteomic profiles to CRF in 14,145 individuals across four international cohorts with diverse CRF ascertainment methods to establish, validate and characterize a proteomic CRF score. In a cohort of around 22,000 individuals in the UK Biobank, a proteomic CRF score was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality (unadjusted hazard ratio 0.50 (95% confidence interval 0.48–0.52) per 1 s.d. increase). The proteomic CRF score was also associated with multisystem disease risk and provided risk reclassification and discrimination beyond clinical risk factors, as well as modulating high polygenic risk of certain diseases. Finally, we observed dynamicity of the proteomic CRF score in individuals who undertook a 20-week exercise training program and an association of the score with the degree of the effect of training on CRF, suggesting potential use of the score for personalization of exercise recommendations. These results indicate that population-based proteomics provides biologically relevant molecular readouts of CRF that are additive to genetic risk, potentially modifiable and clinically translatable.

Abstract:Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) has been increasingly recognized in recent years as an important predictor of risk for adverse outcomes in numerous chronic conditions. In fact, a growing body of epidemiological and clinical evidence demonstrates that CRF is a potentially stronger predictor of mortality than established risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, adding CRF to these traditional risk factors significantly improves the reclassification of risk for adverse outcomes. The utility of CRF now extends far beyond all-cause and cardiovascular mortality to include the prevention and treatment of numerous other chronic conditions; CRF has been demonstrated to have a mitigating influence in as many as 40 such conditions. Herein we discuss the impact of CRF in the prevention of chronic disease in both adults and children. This discussion includes recent data on interactions between CRF and aging, obesity, statin use, incidence of diabetes, and the impact of CRF and physical activity patterns in adolescents including mental health, scholastic achievement, and cardiometabolic health. Finally, we discuss how CRF, as an essential vital sign, can be implemented in clinical practice.

Abstract:Objectives To examine the associations between changes in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in adulthood and prostate cancer incidence and mortality. Methods In this prospective study, men who completed an occupational health profile assessment including at least two valid submaximal CRF tests, performed on a cycle ergometer, were included in the study. Data on prostate cancer incidence and mortality were derived from national registers. HRs and CIs were calculated using Cox proportional hazard regression with inverse probability treatment weights of time-varying covariates. Results During a mean follow-up time of 6.7 years (SD 4.9), 592 (1%) of the 57 652 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 46 (0.08%) died with prostate cancer as the primary cause of death. An increase in absolute CRF (as % of L/min) was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer incidence (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.96 to 0.99) but not mortality, in the fully adjusted model. When participants were grouped as having increased (+3%), stable (±3%) or decreased (−3%) CRF, those with increased fitness also had a reduced risk of prostate cancer incidence compared with those with decreased fitness (HR 0.65, 95% CI 0.49 to 0.86), in the fully adjusted model. Conclusion In this study of employed Swedish men, change in CRF was inversely associated with risk of prostate cancer incidence, but not mortality. Change in CRF appears to be important for reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Abstract:In 2013, mortality reductions with improving cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) have been suggested to persist until 13 METs. More recently, accumulating evidence from large-scale studies suggests that mortality from all causes decreases with increasing CRF levels, apparently without upper limit of CRF. However, when baseline CRF is assessed in later life, upper limits of CRF decrease depending on the individual fitness level at baseline and the volume and intensity of physical activity performed during follow up. Consequently, both a CRF level as high as possible during early adulthood, achieved by appropriate exercise interventions, and a small CRF decline during later life, by continuation of regular physical activity, will help to optimize longevity.

Abstract:This review focuses on the emerging evidence for the association between non-exercise fitness testing, estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF), and metabolic risk factors. Given the challenges associated with directly measuring cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in large populations, eCRF presents a practical alternative for predicting metabolic health risks. A literature search identified seven relevant cohort studies from 2020 to 2024 that investigated the association of eCRF with hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and obesity. This review consistently demonstrates an inverse relationship between higher eCRF and a lower incidence of metabolic risks, which is in line with CRF cohort studies. It highlights the importance of low eCRF as a primordial indicator for metabolic risks and underscores the potential for broader application. Future research directions should include exploring eCRF's predictive ability across diverse populations and health outcomes and testing its real-world applicability in healthcare and public health settings.

Abstract:Introduction: Coronary artery calcification (CAC) score, physical activity (PA), and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are all associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. While a U-shaped relationship between PA and CRF with CAC has been reported, CAC presence among highly fit individuals was suggested to be benign. Objective: To determine interactive associations of PA/CRF and CAC with outcomes in a cohort of middle-aged adults and to evaluate the relationship of PA/CRF with CAC incidence. Methods: CARDIA participants with CT-assessed CAC at year 20 (2005-06) were included (n=3141, mean age 45y, 57% female, 45% Black). Moderate to vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) was assessed by self-report and accelerometer. CRF was estimated with a treadmill test. Incident CVD events were adjudicated, and mortality data were obtained through 2019. CAC was reassessed at year 25 (2010-11). Cox models assessed hazard ratios (HRs) for CVD and mortality in groups defined by CAC and MVPA/CRF. Logistic models assessed associations with CAC incidence. Results: At baseline, more favorable CVD risk was found among participants with higher MVPA, higher CRF (> median sex-specific duration), and absence of CAC. During a mean follow-up of 13 years, 166 CVD events and 171 deaths occurred. After multivariable adjustment, compared with no CAC and higher CRF (ref), the HRs (95% CIs) for CVD were 5.04 (2.49-10.20) for CAC and higher CRF, 2.26 (1.24-4.12) for no CAC and lower CRF, and 4.27 (2.24-8.14) for CAC and lower CRF (Figure, left panel). The respective HRs for mortality were 1.12 (0.45-2.77), 1.54 (0.91-2.60), and 3.23 (1.82-5.72) (Figure, right panel). Similar findings were observed with self-reported or accelerometer MVPA replacing CRF. Higher CRF and accelerometer MVPA were dose-responsively associated with a lower probability of developing CAC in a 5-year follow-up (P < .01). Conclusions: PA and CRF were inversely associated with CAC incidence in middle-aged adults. CAC presence eliminated the cardiovascular risk advantage of high PA or high CRF.

Abstract:Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) not only reflects an individual's capacity to perform physical activities but also encapsulates broader effects on the basic biology of aging. This review aims to summarize the evidence on the influence of CRF on overall and site-specific cancer risks. It delves into the biological mechanisms through which CRF may exert its effects, explores the clinical implications of these findings, identifies gaps in the current evidence base, and suggests directions for future research. The synthesis of findings reveals that higher CRF levels (general threshold of > 7 METs) are consistently associated with a reduced risk of a range of cancers, including head and neck, lung, breast, gastrointestinal, particularly pancreatic and colorectal, bladder, overall cancer incidence and mortality, and potentially stomach and liver, bile duct, and gall bladder cancers. These inverse associations between CRF and cancer risk do not generally differ across age groups, sex, race, or adiposity, suggesting a universal protective effect of CRF. Nonetheless, evidence linking CRF with skin, mouth and pharynx, kidney, and endometrial cancers is limited and inconclusive. Conversely, higher CRF levels may be potentially linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer and hematological malignancies, such as leukemia and myeloma, although the evidence is still not conclusive. CRF appears to play a significant role in reducing the risk of several cancers through various biological mechanisms, including inflammation reduction, immune system enhancement, hormonal regulation, and metabolic improvements. Overall, enhancing CRF through regular physical activity offers a vital, accessible strategy for reducing cancer risk and extending the health span. Future research should aim to fill the existing evidence gaps regarding specific cancers and elucidate the detailed dose–response relationships between CRF levels and cancer risk. Studies are also needed to elucidate the causal relationships and mechanistic pathways linking CRF to cancer outcomes.
