Abstract:Abstract Metasurfaces have proven themselves an exotic ability to harness light at nano-scale, being important not only for classical but also for quantum optics. Dynamic manipulation of the quantum states is at the heart of quantum information processing; however, such function has been rarely realized with metasurfaces so far. Here, we report an all-optical dynamic modulation of the photonic quantum states using the nonlinear metasurface. The metasurface consists of a metallic nanostructure combined with a photoisomerizable azo layer. By tuning the plasmonic resonance through optically switching the azo molecules between their binary isomeric states, we have realized dynamic control of transmission efficiencies of orthogonally polarized photons and also the phase delay between them, thereby an entangled state was efficiently controlled. As an illustration, a quantum state distillation has been demonstrated to recover a Bell state from a non-maximally entangled one to that with fidelities higher than 98%. Our work would enrich the functions of the metasurface in the quantum world, from static to dynamic modulation, making the quantum metasurface going practical.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces, i.e., subwavelength planar nanostructures, have attracted increasing attention due to their unprecedented capabilities of molding classical light and revolutionized conventional optics by replacing bulky optical components with ultrathin, lightweight, and ultracompact meta-optics. In addition to controlling classical light, meta-optics demonstrate the potential to efficiently manipulate nonclassical light and start to enter the realm of quantum photonics. Here, we briefly overview recent advances in quantum meta-optics for generation and manipulation of nonclassical light, highlighting innovative approaches, and discuss future opportunities in this burgeoning area, ranging from fundamental research to practical applications.

Controlling spectral energies of all harmonics in programmable way using time-domain digital coding metasurface

Abstract:Modern wireless communication is one of the most important information technologies, but its system architecture has been unchanged for many years. Here, we propose a much simpler architecture for wireless communication systems based on metasurface. We firstly propose a time-domain digital coding metasurface to reach a simple but efficient method to manipulate spectral distributions of harmonics. Under dynamic modulations of phases on surface reflectivity, we could achieve accurate controls to different harmonics in a programmable way to reach many unusual functions like frequency cloaking and velocity illusion, owing to the temporal gradient introduced by digital signals encoded by '0' and '1' sequences. A theoretical model is presented and experimentally validated to reveal the nonlinear process. Based on the time-domain digital coding metasurface, we propose and realize a new wireless communication system in binary frequency-shift keying (BFSK) frame, which has much more simplified architecture than the traditional BFSK with excellent performance for real-time message transmission. The presented work, from new concept to new system, will find important applications in modern information technologies.

Abstract:From metamaterials to metasurfaces, optical nano-structure has been widely investigated for novel and high efficiency functionalities. Apart from the intrisinsic properties of composite material, rich capabilities can be derived from the judicious design of metasurfaces, which enable more excellent and highly integrated optical devices than traditional bulk optical elements. In the meantime, the abundant manipulation abilites of light in the classical domain can be carried over into quantum domain. In this review, we highlight recent development of quantum optics based on metasurfaces, ranging from quantum plasmonics, generation, manipulation and appplication of quantum light to quantum vaccum engineering etc. Finally, some promising avenues for quantum optics with the help of optical metasurface are presented.

Abstract:As a two-dimensional planar material with low depth profile, a metasurface can generate non-classical phase distributions for the transmitted and reflected electromagnetic waves at its interface. Thus, it offers more flexibility to control the wave front. A traditional metasurface design process mainly adopts the forward prediction algorithm, such as Finite Difference Time Domain, combined with manual parameter optimization. However, such methods are time-consuming, and it is difficult to keep the practical meta-atom spectrum being consistent with the ideal one. In addition, since the periodic boundary condition is used in the meta-atom design process, while the aperiodic condition is used in the array simulation, the coupling between neighboring meta-atoms leads to inevitable inaccuracy. In this review, representative intelligent methods for metasurface design are introduced and discussed, including machine learning, physics-information neural network, and topology optimization method. We elaborate on the principle of each approach, analyze their advantages and limitations, and discuss their potential applications. We also summarise recent advances in enabled metasurfaces for quantum optics applications. In short, this paper highlights a promising direction for intelligent metasurface designs and applications for future quantum optics research and serves as an up-to-date reference for researchers in the metasurface and metamaterial fields.

Abstract:Integrated photonic circuits are created as a stable and small form factor analogue of fiber-based optical systems, from wavelength-division multiplication transceivers to more recent mode-division multiplexing components. Silicon nanowire waveguides guide the light in a way that single and few mode fibers define the direction of signal flow. Beyond communication tasks, on-chip cascaded interferometers and photonic meshes are also sought for optical computing and advanced signal processing technology. Here we review an alternative way of defining the light flow in the integrated photonic platform, using arrays of subwavelength meta-atoms or metalines for guiding the diffraction and interference of light. The integrated metasurface system mimics free-space optics, where on-chip analogues of basic optical components are developed with foundry compatible geometry, such as low-loss lens, spatial-light modulator, and other wavefront shapers. We discuss the role of metasurface in integrated photonic signal processing systems, introduce the design principles of such metasurface systems for low loss compact mode conversion, mathematical operation, diffractive optical systems for hyperspectral imaging, and tuning schemes of metasurface systems. Then we perceive reconfigurability schemes for metasurface framework, toward optical neural networks and analog photonic accelerators.

Polarization Manipulation and Multiplexing Via Optical Metasurfaces: from Classical to Quantum

Abstract:Traditional optical elements, such as waveplates and polarization beam splitters, are essential for classical and quantum information techniques. Yet their bulky size and heavy weight are prejudicial for miniaturizing information systems. Here, we present our recent studies on polarization manipulation and multiplexing with optical metasurfaces, which significantly miniaturize optical systems. One is to break the limitation of polarization multiplexing in optical metasurfaces with engineered noise, and the other is to realize multichannel distribution and transformation of entangled photons with dielectric metasurfaces. The approaches achieve potential applications in high-capacity optical displays, data storage, information encryption, and quantum information networks.

Abstract:Metasurfaces provide a miniaturized and superficial solution for implementing various nanophotonic devices by exploiting their unprecedented ability to spatially tailor the phase, amplitude, and polarization of the incident light. These meta-devices intriguing significant attention from the research community and have become a prominent hotspot for the realization of state-of-the-art on-chip devices. Various types of information can be encoded independently into a single metasurface, strengthening the cutting-edge technology of nanophotonic for practical applications such as holograms, lenses, beam steering, high-density optical storage, and displays. The integration of metasurfaces and holographic technology makes it the most desirous, but many of the presented techniques lack multifunctional capabilities. Here, we proposed a straightforward strategy for spin manipulation and wavelength multiplexing via geometric phase to overcome the limitations of multifunctionality through anisotropic nanoantennas in the ultraviolet regime. The proposed design methodology provides a superior degree of freedom to increase the multifunctional capabilities of metasurfaces for independent wavefront manipulation. By simultaneously controlling the polarization of the incident and transmitted wave vector, a trifunctional all-dielectric metasurface is implemented. For the proof of concept, we designed a structure that displays two holograms at focal planes. The proposed metasurface features the nanostructured pixels of the silicon nitride material, a lossless, high-refractive index dielectric material that ensures high transmission efficiency in the ultraviolet regime. It is expected that the proposed design strategy can be applied to broaden the horizon for implementing multifunctional nanophotonic devices and multiple optical phenomena.

Abstract:All-optical tunability of semiconductor metasurfaces offers unique opportunities for novel time-varying effects, including frequency conversion and light trapping. However, the all-optical processes often induce optical absorption that fundamentally limits the possible dynamic increase of their quality factor (Q-boosting). Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate the concept of large Q-boosting in a single-material metasurface by dynamically reducing its structural anisotropy on a femtosecond timescale. This balance is achieved by excitation with a structured pump and takes advantage of the band-filling effect in a GaAs direct-bandgap semiconductor to eliminate the free-carrier-induced loss. We show that this approach allows a dynamic boosting of the resonance quality factor over orders of magnitude, only limited by the free-carrier relaxation processes. The proposed approach offers complete dynamic control over the resonance bandwidth and opens applications in frequency conversion and light trapping.

Abstract:Artificially elaborated metasurfaces with unparalleled manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves have sparked revolutionary upsurge in the microwave, terahertz, and even optics fields. Whether as the basic dimensions of EM waves, or modulated degrees of freedom (DOFs) for metasurfaces, independent customization of amplitude, phase, and polarization plays crucial roles in endowing kaleidoscopic wavefronts. However, the existing methods for simultaneous control suffer from insufficient efficiency, limited bandwidth, and transformed polarization, especially for transmissive geometry. Enlightened by twisted nematic liquid crystals, a highly efficient ultra-wideband transmissive metasurface integrating duplexing meta-particles that can enable efficient tailoring of the above three profiles. The designed planar device with subwavelength thickness is not only to implement high-performance transmission (amplitude limitation of near-unity) for linearly polarized (LP) waves along bi-directions, but can achieve complete phase modulation in ultra-wide band (fractal bandwidth of 124%). Divertingly, dual-twisted structure further eliminates crosstalk, maintaining interactive function for designated co-polarization. The concept and significance of it are validated via two proof-of-prototypes demonstrating functionalities composed of cascaded metasurfaces, which generate 2-D airy beam and complex-amplitude meta-hologram. Thus, the proposed strategy constructs a robust platform for advanced wavefronts manipulation within ultra-wide band and high efficiency, and might have remarkable potentials in beam forming, duplex communications, and information encryption.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have facilitated numerous innovative applications in the scope of nonlinear optics. However, dynamically tuning the nonlinear response at the pixel level is very challenging. Recent work proposed a novel method to electrically manipulate the local amplitude and phase of third-harmonics generation (THG) by integrating the giant nonlinear responses resulting from intersubband transitions of multiple quantum wells (MQW) with plasmonic nano-resonator. The demonstrated method may pave the way to realize nonlinear optical elements with versatile functionalities by electrically tuning and promoting the advancements of innovative applications such as lidar, 3D displays, optical encryption, optical computing, and so on.

Abstract:A tunable metasurface operating in the near‐infrared range is proposed, which is based on plasmonic quasi bound state in the continuum (quasi‐BIC) and driven by metallic quantum wells (MQWs). The combination of the high Q‐factor from quasi‐BIC and the large Kerr‐nonlinearity from MQWs leads to a large modulation depth (around 9 dB extinction ratio) and a terahertz‐level modulation speed. Effectual free‐space optical metasurface is essential for telecommunication and information processing. However, the lack of efficient optical nonlinearity is still an obstacle to empower its full capability and practical applications. Metallic quantum wells (MQWs) with large nonlinear susceptibility may pave a new way. Here, such MQWs are implemented into a resonance configuration of the quasi bound state in the continuum (BIC) and an efficient tunable plasmonic metasurface is proposed. Such metasurface is composed of MQWs‐based nanostructure, which supports the tunable plasmonic quasi‐BIC. The tunability is controlled through substantial change in refractive index of MQWs induced by Kerr‐type nonlinearity, which leads to around 9 dB extinction ratio and extremely high modulation speed up to terahertz level. The quasi‐BIC with narrow linewidth is obtained through symmetry‐breaking of nanoelliptical elements, further enhancing the modulation depth. This work satisfies the ultrafast‐speed and high‐efficiency requirement of free‐space all‐optical metasurfaces, including the spatial light modulators in optical computing field.

Abstract:Phase gradient metasurfaces have revolutionized modern optical components by significantly reducing the path length of bulk optics while maintaining high performance. However, their geometric design makes dynamic modulation challenging, with devices facing a trade-off between the modulation range and efficiency. Here, we introduce Silicon-on-Lithium Niobate (LNO) high-Quality-factor (high-Q) metasurfaces for efficient electro-optic wavefront shaping and modulation. Periodic perturbations within Si metasurface elements allow incident light to be weakly coupled into guided modes, generating high-Q resonances that manifest in the far-field diffraction spectrum. The near field of each Si element spatially overlaps with the LNO substrate, enabling electrically tunable modulation of the resonant frequency. Using full-field simulations, we demonstrate near-infrared, dynamically tunable beamsteering, and beamsplitting metasurfaces. First, we demonstrate beamsteering metasurfaces whose +1st order diffracted intensity can be modulated from 70% to 7% absolute efficiency near the resonant frequency with applied electric fields of order V/μm. Next, we design a tunable beam splitter, switching between direct, 0th order transmission and beamsplitting with the application of 30 V across the metasurface. Our high-Q electro-optic metasurfaces provide a foundation for efficient, time-dependent transfer functions in subwavelength footprints.
