Abstract:To investigate the effects of proactive safety control systems suitable for highway interchanges and improve road traffic safety. Simulated driving experiments were conducted to test the effects of the interchange warning system (IWS) on the ramp, merging section, diverging section, and accident section. Random forest (RF) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) are used to analyze the effects between driving behavior and driving risk change in both situations without and with IWS. The results show that (1) as driving risk increases, drivers tend to increase the frequency of braking and engage in more comprehensive saccade behaviors. Concurrently, there is an increase in acceleration and speed variation, leading to a gradual decrease in speed. (2) Compared with the SVR and XGBoost, RF can better fit the nonlinear relationship between driving risk and driver behavior characteristics with the application of IWS. (3) The IWS mainly reduces driving risk by affecting operation behavior. When the mean speed, speed standard deviation (SD), acceleration SD, and maximum braking depth are at 40 to 70 km/h, 3 to 10 km/h, 0 to 0.6 m/s2, and 14 to 16, respectively, there is a significant reduction in driving risk. The application of the IWS expands the effective range of mean speed and speed SD for reducing driving risk to 40 to 100 km/h and 3 to 15 km/h, respectively.

Abstract:This paper proposed a new risk assessment approach based on probability theory and presented corresponding warning strategy for intersection collision avoidance system. Simulation evaluation method was also addressed and evaluation criterions were improved. After an introduction of background and related works of risk assessment for intersection collision avoidance system, a probability model was established to assess crossing path collision risk. Then the warning strategy was made in two traffic scenarios separately. Warning would be issued if risk value beyond risk threshold. A traffic simulation platform was also developed with VISSIM to evaluate collision avoidance performance. The evaluation criterion included not only missed and nuisance warning ratio corresponding to various arrival time difference, but also the required deceleration after warning.

Abstract:Smart intersections have the potential to improve road safety with sensing, communication, and edge computing technologies. Perception sensors installed at a smart intersection can monitor the traffic environment in real time and send infrastructure-based warnings to nearby travelers through V2X communication. This paper investigated how infrastructure-based warnings can influence driving behaviors and improve roundabout safety through a driving-simulator study - a challenging driving scenario for human drivers. A co-simulation platform integrating Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and Webots was developed to serve as the driving simulator. A real-world roundabout in Ann Arbor, Michigan was built in the co-simulation platform as the study area, and the merging scenarios were investigated. 36 participants were recruited and asked to navigate the roundabout under three danger levels (e.g., low, medium, high) and three collision warning designs (e.g., no warning, warning issued 1 second in advance, warning issued 2 seconds in advance). Results indicated that advanced warnings can significantly enhance safety by minimizing potential risks compared to scenarios without warnings. Earlier warnings enabled smoother driver responses and reduced abrupt decelerations. In addition, a personalized intention prediction model was developed to predict drivers' stop-or-go decisions when the warning is displayed. Among all tested machine learning models, the XGBoost model achieved the highest prediction accuracy with a precision rate of 95.56% and a recall rate of 97.73%.

Inter-green interval calculation for signalized intersections

Abstract:To ensure the safety and to improve the efficiency of the traffic, as well as avoiding the jam during the transition of conflict phase, a calculate method of inter-green interval has been proposed. Then based on the joint knowledge of the traffic control theory and the traffic conflict principles, with the centering on the security transition function, the implication of amber interval and whole-red time has been clarified and then confirmed. After that, the safety conditions for the drivers which should be satisfied in the condition of parking choice and acrossing the intersections security are also suggested. As the research progresses, the possibility of causing the dilemma zone emerged in the different critical stopping distances and the limitation clearance distances has been discussed, further calculating method of minimum inter-green interval which could eliminate the dilemma zone is finally determined to distribute the amber interval and the whole-red time. With the example of the real intersections in the city of Changchun, the rationality and practicability of the method is well proved.

Abstract:With the advancement of autonomous driving technology, scenario-based testing has become the mainstream testing method for intelligent vehicles. However, traditional risk indicators often fail in roundabout scenarios and cannot accurately define dangerous situations. To accurately quantify driving risks in roundabout scenarios, an improved driving safety field model is proposed in this paper. First, considering the unique traffic flow characteristics of roundabouts, the dynamic characteristics of vehicles during diverging or merging were taken into account, and the driving safety field model was improved to accurately quantify the driving risks in roundabout scenarios. Second, based on data from the rounD dataset, the model parameters were calibrated using the social force model. Finally, a DENCLUE-like method was used to extract collision systems, calculate vehicle risk degree, and analyze these risks for both the temporal and the spatial dimensions, providing guidance for virtual testing. The proposed method significantly improves detection efficiency, increasing the number of identified dangerous scenarios by 175% compared to the Time to Collision (TTC) method. Moreover, this method can more accurately quantify driving risks in roundabout scenarios and enhance the efficiency of generating dangerous scenarios, contributing to promoting the safety of autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:Driving simulation system,based on virtual reality technology,could be applied broadly in road safety study and driver's training due to its advantage in producing both safe and replicable environment.It is believed that novice drivers are less prepared for hazards and their reaction pattern to hazards is different from experienced drivers.This study developed a virtual driving environment including 15 road hazard scenarios identified from focus group discussions and questionnaires in Beijing.Two groups(16 novice and 16 experienced drivers) were tested on a fixed-base driving simulator.Their reaction to the hazards in terms of speed,braking,and steering,were automatically collected and analyzed.Results indicate that experienced drivers crash much less during the hazard,drive slower before potential hazards,and their reaction to sudden appeared hazards are more appropriate for safety.Potential impacts of this method and results include developing interventions for novice driver training program based on virtual reality technology and developing hazard warning devices.

Abstract:Driving pattern has been increasingly researched to improve driving safety and develop autonomous vehicles. Oriented towards the complex infrastructures at signalized intersections, this research digs into the risk sources brought by different kinds of road elements, including road lane markings, road curbs, median separators, signal timing, and neighboring vehicles around the ego car. Referring to vehicle speed both in the longitudinal and latitudinal dimensions, risk scope and distribution are quantified with the vehicle position of a torus with a Gaussian cross-section. Then, the risk is summed over all the road elements across all the points involved by the ego car, the level of which should be controlled within the threshold value when the ego vehicle explores to minimize trip delay. Thus, autonomous driving strategies are developed with respect to vehicle speed and steering angle. The proposed model is validated with NGSIM data, where a signalized intersection on Peachtree Street is selected and vehicles moving in different directions are analyzed. It is found that the proposed model manages to control vehicles with risk at the accepted level and to enhance the speed level as well as reduce acceleration fluctuations. This research contributes to improving autonomous driving against complex driving conditions for driving safety and efficiency.

Abstract:Rear-end collision and side collision are two types of accidents with the highest accident rate in the world. Numerous studies have focused on rear-end accident research, but only a few constructive countermeasures are put forward. Driving risk evolution at the driver operational level before an accident is critical to collision avoidance. This paper puts forward a driver operational level identification of driving risk and graded alarm under near-crash conditions. Firstly, driving simulation is utilized to acquire the operation data of SV (subjective vehicle) under the condition of emergent deceleration of LV (leading vehicle). The kinematic model is built to characterize the law of the risk discrimination indices of SV including THW (time headway), SHW (space headway) and TTCi (the reciprocal of time to collision). The predicted results are consistent with the naturalistic driving data. Secondly, the three-dimensional distribution 'speed-spacing-TTCi' is applied to classify the risky driving state of SV. The precarious distribution is concentrated at the area where relative velocity increased to 23-40 km/h and spacing decreased to 18-30 m. Finally, based on the reaction time and braking distance reduction, the optimal external intervention is determined to be the acousto-optic way by driving simulation. For moderate drivers, a three-level alarm of 2.94 s, 1.94 s and 1.1 s is calibrated considering different driving styles and cumulative frequency curve of reaction time.

A Traffic Prediction-Based Individualized Driver Warning System to Reduce Red Light Violations

Abstract:Red light violation is a major cause of traffic collisions and resulting injuries and fatalities. Despite extensive prior work to reduce red light violations, they continue to be a major problem in practice, partly because existing systems suffer from the flaw of providing the same guidance to all drivers. As a result, some violations are avoided, but other drivers ignore or respond inappropriately to red light running systems, resulting in safety issues overall. We show a method of providing accurate warnings to individual drivers to avoid the broad guidance approach of most existing systems. Recognizing if a driver will run red lights is highly dependent on signal phase and timing, traffic conditions along the road, and individual driver behaviour, the proposed warning system contains three parts: a traffic prediction algorithm, an individual warning signal optimizer, and a driver warning display. The traffic prediction algorithm predicts future traffic states along the road towards the signalized intersections using the latest traffic conditions obtained through vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. Then, an optimization problem is formulated to compute the optimal warning signal based on predicted traffic states and driver reaction model. Finally, the optimal warning signal is shown on the display screen to advise driver on how much braking is needed to avoid running the red light. The system continuously updates the latest warning signal as the vehicle is approaching the intersection. Both numerical simulated driving scenarios and real-world road tests are used to demonstrate the proposed algorithm's performance under different conditions by comparing with previous work on red light running warning system. The results show that the system provides more effective and accurate warning signals to drivers, helping them avoid running red lights.

Abstract:It is believed that the novice drivers are less prepared for potential road hazards and their reaction mode to hazards is different from the experienced drivers. Main road hazards in China were identified using focus group discussions and questionnaires. Then virtual reality technology was used to develop five most important hazards for experimental study. In this preliminary study, two groups of Chinese drivers (8 novice and 8 experienced) were tested on a driving simulation system. Their reaction to the hazards in terms of average driving speed, braking operation against suddenly appeared hazards, and wheel steering were automatically collected and analyzed. Results indicate that experienced drivers drive slower before potential hazards and their reaction to sudden appeared hazards are more appropriate. Potential impacts of this method and result include developing interventions for novice driver training program and developing hazard warning devices.
A freeway vehicle early warning method based on risk map: Enhancing traffic safety through global perspective characterization of driving risk

Abstract:In the era of rapid advancements in intelligent transportation, utilizing vehicle operating data to evaluate the risk of freeway vehicles and study on vehicle early warning methods not only lays a theoretical foundation for improving the active safety of vehicles, but also provides the technical support for reducing accident rate. This paper proposes a freeway vehicle early warning method based on risk map to enhance vehicle safety. Firstly, Modified Time-to-Collision (MTTC), a two-dimensional indicator that describes the risk of inter-vehicle travel, is used as an indicator of road traffic risk. This paper designs a transformation function to probabilistically transform MTTC into Risk Indicators (RI). The single-vehicle risk map is generated based on the mapping relationship between the risk values and the corresponding roadway segments. These single-vehicle risk maps of all vehicles on the road are superimposed to construct the risk map, which is used to describe the risk distribution in the freeway. Then, a vehicle early warning framework is built based on the risk map. The risk values in the risk map are compared with predefined early warning thresholds to alert the vehicle when it enters a high-risk state. Finally, VISSIM is used to carry out simulation experiments. The experiment simulates a freeway accident stopping situation. This scenario includes sub-scenarios such as unplanned stopping and lane-changing, continuous lane-changing, and adjacent lane overtaking. We analyze the risk map and vehicle warning results in different sub-scenarios, evaluate the risk changes of the vehicles before and after receiving the warning, and compare the warning results of the method in this paper with other alternative methods. The method is applied to 17 vehicles in the simulation to adjust their motion states. The results show that the total warning time is reduced by 29.6% and 73.3% of vehicles change lanes away from the accident vehicle. The overall results validate the effectiveness of the vehicle early warning method based on risk map proposed in this paper.

Abstract:Introduction: Motor-vehicle crashes at signalized intersections are a significant traffic safety problem. To address this problem, many Asian cities have installed signal countdown displays at signalized intersec-tions, aiming to assist drivers to make correct decisions in response to traffic signals. Method: In this study, we assessed the short-term and long-term effects of green signal countdown timers (GSCTs) on road safety, using a combination of driving simulator experiments and naturalistic observations. Results: In our driving simulator experiments, 80 participants drove at 50 km/h in scenarios in which a car either approached a signalized intersection alone or following another car. In naturalistic observa-tions, short-term (1-week) and long-term (1-year) intersection safety in the presence and absence of GSCTs were compared. These observations revealed that GSCTs reduced the number of red-light -running violations over the short term, but not over the long term. In fact, GSCTs appeared to lead to an overall increase in rear-end crash risk at intersections, as their presence resulted in drivers exhibiting more sudden acceleration and braking, and altered intersection-crossing speeds and patterns. Conclusions: The results suggest that GSCTs worsen safety at signalized intersections, and thus their removal should be considered.(c) 2022 The Authors. Effect of Visual Instruction on Drivers' Reaction Pattern in Lateral Conflicts.

Abstract:Side-impact accident is the most common form of traffic accident in China and contributes the most fatalities. Driver factor is widely believed to be the main causation of those accidents. During lateral conflicts at intersections, braking with same-direction-swerving are used too often by drivers under many inappropriate conditions, resulting in traffic accidents which could have been avoided. In this driving simulation study, arrow-shaped visual instructions are displayed in front of drivers, in order to guide them and reduce their dangerous avoidance reaction pattern described above. Firstly, in pretest, subjects' natural emergency avoidance behavior during intersection conflicts was tested without any instructions; Later, in posttest, arrow-shaped visual instructions were shown in front of subjects when conflicts were triggered; Finally, one month later, drivers were asked to attend a tracking test with the same visual instructions displayed. Result shows that without instruction, subjects prefer to use braking and same-direction-swerving irrationally in lateral conflicts. Although such pattern is not helpful for avoiding crashes, they didn't manage to correct themselves during trials. In posttest, arrow-guidance is found significantly helpful for drivers to make better longitudinal and lateral avoidance choices. However, positive impact of visual instruction drops significantly in tracking test one month later. Learning effect is observed among trials in both posttest and tracking test. This study provides a data basis for driver's decision-making mechanism research under conflict conditions, and could be used for future intelligent connected vehicles' human-machine interaction design as well as collision-avoidance system development.
An improved automated braking system for rear-end collisions: A study based on a driving simulator experiment

Abstract:Introduction: To assist drivers in avoiding rear-end collisions, many early warning systems have been developed up to date. Autonomous braking technology is also used as the last defense to ensure driver's safety. Method: By taking the accuracy and timeliness of automatic system control into account, this paper proposes a rear-end Real-Time Autonomous Emergency Braking (RTAEB) system. The system inserts brake intervention based on drivers' real-time conflict identification and collision avoidance performance. A driving simulator-based experiment under different traffic conditions and deceleration scenarios were conducted to test the different thresholds to trigger intervention and the intervention outcomes. The system effectiveness is verified by four evaluation indexes, including collision avoidance rate, accuracy rate, sensitivity rate, and precision rate. Results: The results showed that the system could help avoid all collision events successfully and enlarge the final headway distance, and a TTC threshold of 1.5 s and a maximum deceleration threshold of -7.5 m/s2 could achieve the best collision avoidance effect. The paper demonstrates the situations that are more inclined to trigger the RTAEB (i.e., a sudden brake of the leading vehicle and a small car-following distance). Moreover, the study shows that driver characteristics (i.e., gender and profession) have no significant association with system trigger. Practical Applications: The study suggests that development of collision avoidance systems design should pay attention to both the real-time traffic situation and drivers' collision avoidance capability under the present situation.

Abstract:The paper aimed to explore the relationship between risks and individuals' driving states and then design an efficient method to help drivers avoid high risks. The relationship between risks and individuals' driving states was deeply studied first. Microscopic driving states were categorized into different clusters, and it was found that the risks are distinct in different clusters and a specific driver might experience different risks in car-following process. Then, according to these findings, a risk warning strategy was designed to help drivers avoid high risks. The risk warning is active when the risk is higher than its threshold. The Helly models were used to mimic the drivers' reaction to study the influence of the warning strategy. Simulation results showed that with the consideration of the risk warning, the spacing obviously increases, and the oscillations of velocity and acceleration are significantly shrunk, and risks in the driving process dampen down. Because drivers can perceive high risks during the driving process, and then appropriately change their car-following decisions to avoid high risks. These findings are helpful to improve driving behaviors and promote traffic safety.
Real-time driving risk assessment based on the psycho-physical field

Abstract:Real-time Driving Risk Assessment (RDRA) is a critical component of traffic safety and is influenced by confounding impacts from drivers, surrounding vehicles, and roadway conditions. Previous studies simplified the RDRA based on kinematic characteristics. However, drivers perceived the risks not only through kinematic characteristics but also by anticipating the behaviors of surrounding participants and execute collision-preventive maneuvers. In this study, an innovative RDRA framework based on the Psycho-Physical Field (PPF) is proposed. Specifically, the PPF of the subjective vehicle exerts repulsive forces on intrusive risk sources in different directions, of which the two-dimensional field distribution is determined by physical collision-related measures and regulated by the psychological characteristics of behavior anticipations and risk perception abilities. The proposed method was first analyzed through theoretical feasibility analyses and verified for over 450 high-risk events from naturalistic driving data, including three typical types of scenarios: car-following, lane-changing, and being cut-in/off. Moreover, the adaptability was further validated through three cases and compared with the risk warning functions of Mobileye. The results showed that the proposed method can provide accurate risk evaluations, and identify potential hazards about 2 s in advance for high-risk cut-in events.

Dynamic Risk Assessment and Control Framework for Work Zone and Its First Implementation under Simulation Environment

Abstract:The number of road maintenance operations in China is increasing. Work zones can interfere with everyday driving and bring significant safety hazards to the throughput vehicles and construction personnel. However, there is currently a lack of effective methods to conduct a dynamic risk assessment of work zones and provide control guidance when necessary. Therefore, this study proposes a dynamic risk assessment and control framework for the work zones. The framework adopts a closed-loop control and dynamic monitoring architecture. A massive amount of microscopic data on vehicles’ behavior is obtained based on advanced data collection technologies (including multicamera multiobject tracking, naturalistic driving, and microscopic traffic simulation). Traffic conflicts between single vehicle and two- or multivehicle are detected using vehicle behavior analyzing technology and the surrogate safety assessment model. A comprehensive assessment index, i.e., UTECN (unit total equivalent conflict number), is established that can consider the severity and possibility of accidents caused by conflicts based on the vehicle collision energy theory, probability theory, and risk management theory. A risk assessment standard is established based on the level of safety service. The framework is first implemented in a simulation environment, and its feasibility and effectiveness are verified by taking a work zone of Shanghai Waihuan Expressway S20 as a case study. The result shows that the framework has good practicality. Under a moderate traffic level, the risk of the work zone can be assessed within 20 minutes. It can be quickly and effectively controlled at an acceptable level after several iterations, which is of great significance for ensuring the safety of life and property of throughput vehicles and construction personnel within the work zone.

Abstract:Distracted driving is an important factor affecting the safety of road intersections. However, the research on driving distractions mostly focuses on high-speed situation and closed sections, and there has been a lack of research on low-speed situations and open sections. Meanwhile, there are few studies on crash or near-crash scenarios. Therefore, the paper chose four kinds of typical intersection conflict scenarios to study the effects of the two most common driver distraction: auditory-cognitive distraction and visual-cognitive distraction on drivers' perception and reaction to traffic conflicts. Based on the driving simulator, four kinds of typical intersection conflicts were set up and 42 people participated in this experiment. This paper explores the effect of different kind of driver distractions on drivers' perception and reaction to traffic conflicts using the multi-factor variance analysis with the data collected by an eye tracker, driving simulator, and physiological equipment.
A Method for Vehicle Collision Risk Assessment through Inferring Driver's Braking Actions in Near-Crash Situations

Abstract:Driving information and data under potential vehicle crashes create opportunities for extensive real-world observations of driver behaviors and relevant factors that significantly influence the driving safety in emergency scenarios. Furthermore, the availability of such data also enhances the collision avoidance systems (CASs) by evaluating driver's actions in near-crash scenarios and providing timely warnings. These applications motivate the need for heuristic tools capable of inferring relationship among driving risk, driver/vehicle characteristics, and road environment. In this paper, we acquired amount of real-world driving data and built a comprehensive dataset, which contains multiple "driver-vehicle-road" attributes. The proposed method works in two steps. In the first step, a variable precision rough set (VPRS) based classification technique is applied to draw a reduced core subset from field driving dataset, which presents the essential attributes set most relevant to driving safety assessment. In the second step, we design a decision strategy by introducing mutual information entropy to quantify the significance of each attribute, then a representative index through accumulation of weighted "driver-vehicle-road" factors is calculated to reflect the driving risk for actual situation. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated in an offline analysis of the driving data collected in field trials, where the aim is to infer the emergency braking actions in next short term. The results indicate that our proposed model is a good alternative for providing improved warnings in real-time because of its high prediction accuracy and stability.
