Abstract:Manual interpretation from technicians with prior expertise knowledge is still needed for ultrasonic array tomography when detecting subsurface damages in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Ultrasonic scans were usually utilized in qualitative manners that have not been leveraged for quantification purposes in prior studies and practical engineering. This study presented an ultrasonic array tomography-oriented subsurface crack recognition and pixel-wise cross-section image reconstruction method for RC structures based on deep neural networks (DNN). B-scans were acquired by testing entity RC components with preset artificial cracks using shear-wave low-frequency ultrasonic array. A DNN with the basic encoder-decoder architecture was developed, which was improved by introducing skip connections and residual modules to adapt to semantic structure of ultrasonic B-scans. A supervised generative adversarial DNN was proposed to generate fake but convincing B-scans for data augmentation. Results reported that F-scores were higher than 78 %, and satisfactory agreements were observed between ground truth annotations and reconstructed cross-section images, substantiating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, with the physical information-assisted registration, individual local reconstructed cross-section images were combined to global representations indicating crack distribution in the entire component to facilitate convincing structural assessments.
Numerical Study for Surface-breaking Crack Detection on A Cylinder Using Laser-generated Ultrasound

Abstract:Laser ultrasonic has been widely investigated for its high spatial resolution, non-contact generation and distant testing. In this study, the laser induced waves on a cylinder is simulated based on an explicit finite element model, and the location of the surface-breaking crack is determined using signal enhancement of surface waves on the cylinder. A feature is extracted based on wavelet packet transform and singularity value decomposition (WPT-SVD) to gauge the depth of surface-breaking crack. The simulation results show that the feature is sensitive to the surface-breaking crack, with an accurate location determined by an enhancement of surface waves when the crack is close to the laser source. This study provides a potential application for testing surface-breaking cracks on the rotating cylindrical component.
Surface Crack Identification on a Cylinder Using the Signal Enhancement of the Scanning Laser Line Source Method

Abstract:Cylindrical structures play an important role in industrial fields. The surface crack is a typical defect in the cylindrical structures. Non-destructive surface crack detection of these structures is critical to the safe operation of the equipment. In this study, the signal enhancement of the scanning laser line source (SLLS) method is investigated by a numerical simulation method to identify the location and depth of the surface crack in the aluminum cylinder. A fully coupled explicit finite element model is established to study the signal enhancement of cylindrical surface waves on the aluminum cylinder. The simulation results indicate that the signal enhancement of the SLLS is more sensitive to the surface crack of a cylinder than that of the scanning laser detection (SLD) because of the wider span and higher peak. Due to the phase shift characteristics of surface waves on the cylinder, the maximum peak-to-peak amplitude of signal enhancement in the SLLS method (the SLLS peak) is affected by the detection position and diameter of the cylinder. Therefore, an optimization approach for detection position in SLLS is proposed for the location of surface crack on the cylinder. The locations of the surface crack on the solid cylinders with different diameters are investigated using simulated laser ultrasonic field data. Moreover, we find that the SLLS peak for signal enhancement can effectively respond to the crack depth within a limited scope which is dependent on the directivity pattern of the longitudinal waves.
A Study of Inner Crack Testing with the Laser Phased Array Method.

Abstract:As the optical penetration depth and thermal diffusion effect are small, shear waves and longitudinal waves generated by a laser pulse in thermoelastic regime are generally weak in metallic materials. The method of laser ultrasonic is rarely applied to inspect the inner cracks. In this paper, phased array laser ultrasonic is developed to focus and steer shear waves and longitudinal waves, and obtain inner crack characteristics. Firstly, a two-dimensional laser phased array finite element model is established. Secondly, based on this model, a study on numerical simulation of interaction between shear waves and cracks is conducted by adjusting time delay of laser phased array. It is found by analysis that the position of cracks can be determined by monitoring changes of polarity of shear-tip-shear (STS) diffraction received on the surface of metallic materials and the depth of cracks can be determined by the time of flight of STS diffraction and shear-tip-longitudinal (STL) diffraction. Last of all, a study on numerical simulation of interaction between longitudinal waves and cracks is also conducted. This study provides a possible method for the detection of inner cracks in metallic materials.

Abstract:To address the issues of large imaging errors for small defects and the difficulty in depth evaluation using local wavenumber estimation for surface defect imaging, a novel three-dimensional (3D) evaluation method for surface defects using broadband laser-generated Rayleigh waves with wavenumber analysis is proposed. A finite element model is established to investigate the interaction between the Rayleigh wave and the surface defect and reveal the wavenumber change mechanism of the non-dispersive Rayleigh wave in the case of defects. It is discovered that when the Rayleigh wave encounters the surface defect, various mode-converted scattered waves are generated, resulting in the appearance of new components with wavenumbers lower than that of the incident Rayleigh wave in the wavenumber domain. Additionally, the maximum amplitude of the Rayleigh wave in the B-scan image increases as the defect depth increases. Based on the simulation analysis, a 3D evaluation method for surface defects is proposed. Firstly, the scattered Rayleigh wave caused by the defect is extracted using frequency-wavenumber analysis. Secondly, a space-frequency-wavenumber analysis is used to determine the local wavenumber of the scattered Rayleigh wave for defect imaging. Finally, the defect depth is estimated by analyzing the maximum amplitude of the Rayleigh wave. A surface defect detection experiment is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can suppress noise interference and accomplish high-precision imaging of small surface defects compared to the traditional method. Moreover, the method can establish a linear mapping relationship between the defect depth and the maximum amplitude of the Rayleigh wave for depth evaluation. The research results can provide a potential application for the 3D evaluation of surface defects.
Frequency Domain Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique for Variable-Diameter Cylindrical Components.

Abstract:Ultrasonic non-destructive testing (UNDT) plays an important role in ensuring the quality of cylindrical components of equipment such as pipes and axles. As the acoustic beam width widens along propagation depths, the diffraction of acoustic wave becomes serious and the images of defects will be interfered with. To precisely evaluate the dimensions of defects and flaws concealed in components, the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) is introduced to enhance the image resolutions. Conventional SAFTs have been successfully implemented for the ultrasonic imaging of normal cylinders, while solutions for complex ones, such as variable-diameter cylinders, are still lacking. To overcome this problem, a frequency-domain SAFT for variable-diameter cylindrical components is proposed. This algorithm is mainly based on acoustic field extrapolation, which is modified from cylindrical phase shift migration with the aid of split-step Fourier. After a series of extrapolations, a high-resolution ultrasound image can be reconstructed using a particular imaging condition. According to the experimental results, the proposed method yields low side lobes and high resolutions for flat transducers. Its attainable angular resolution relies on the transducer diameter D and scanning radius R and approximates D/(2R).

Abstract:Ultrasonic B-scan imaging is affected by the acoustic diffraction and electrical effects in nondestructive testing (NDT), resulting in insufficient lateral and temporal resolution for defect characterization. The minimum mean squared error (MMSE) method can improve the resolution by inversing a linear imaging model, which takes the acoustic diffraction and electrical effects into account, and achieve higher resolution than the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT). However, its computation efficiency and resolution improvement are unsatisfactory due to the hypothetical Gaussian distribution of defects. To overcome these problems, a model-based regularized inverse method for ultrasonic B-scan image reconstruction is proposed. Benefitting from the sparse distribution of defects in NDT applications, the proposed method formulates an inverse objective function composed of l(1)-norm as well as l(2)-norm, and the sparse reconstruction by a separable approximation (SpaRSA) algorithm is adopted to obtain the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by B-scan imaging of two 0.3 mm steel wires conducted both in simulation and experiment. The results verify that the proposed method improves the lateral and temporal resolution simultaneously with high computation efficiency.

Abstract:To meet the need of high-sensitivity crack detection in metallic structures with a contactless method, a differ-ential two-wave mixing interferometer based on two nonlinear Bi12SiO20 photorefractive crystals is proposed for laser-induced ultrasound signal measurement. The two Bi12SiO20 crystals are applied with the electric fields of opposite polarities to obtain the dual-path differential signals corresponding to the laser-induced ultrasound under detection, in which the noise is not affected by the polarity of the applied electric field. The signal noise can be effectively suppressed and the sensitivity is doubled by the differential processing of the dual-path signals, by which the high-sensitivity detection of laser-induced ultrasound can be achieved to characterize the crack in metallic structures. The further optimization of system parameters is performed to obtain the optimal detection sensitivity. Both the numerical analysis and experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The proposed system provides a powerful and reliable tool for contactless detection of laser-induced ultrasound and characterization of metal cracks.
Detection of Longitudinal Cracks with a Serrated Columnar Phased Array Transducer: A Simulation Study

Abstract:In order to detect the longitudinal cracks on the outside surface of a hollow components, a novel pattern of ultrasonic phased array transducers is designed. The shape of the transducer surface is rectangular and is distributed on the outside surface of a column, with the longer side parallel to the central axis of the column. Meanwhile the transducers are rotated with a certain angle about the longer side of the transducer surface. According to the structure of the transducers, this novel array is named as serrated columnar array. In this paper, a serrated columnar array is placed in the center of the hollow axle. Because of the rotated angle, the surface of each transducer is oblique relative to the surface of the inner surface of the hollow component, the transducers are expected to generate transverse waves in the inspection component. A delayed law calculation method, based on Snell' law, for focus beam forming through the curved interface is described. Two transient acoustic finite element models, one with crack and the other without crack, are established by using the COMSOL software to verify the performance of this array design, one with crack and the other one without crack. With the designed focus delayed laws, transverse waves can be generated and focused at the crack position. By applying the focus laws to the reception channels, and sum up the echo signals, the signal retrieved from the model with a longitudinal crack is stronger than that from the model without cracks. The results show that this special array pattern is potential to serve as an ultrasonic non-destructive tool to detect the longitudinal cracks on the outside surface of hollow components.
Imaging of vertical surface-breaking cracks in concrete members using ultrasonic shear wave tomography

Abstract:Surface-breaking cracks in concrete pose a significant threat to the durability of built structures. They create pathways for an accelerated moisture intrusion, and the transport of environmental and chemical agents such as chloride ions, which in turn, exacerbate reinforced concrete deterioration. Estimating the extent of crack propagation beneath the surface helps in determining the safety, durability and reliability of a structure. This information can be used to devise appropriate repair methodologies. Developments in Dry Point Contact (DPC)-based ultrasonic arrays have enabled the detection and localization of defects in concrete through high-resolution imaging. This work proposes the use of Half-Skip travel modes in the time-domain pulse-echo data to be deployed for imaging vertical cracks in concrete. In contrast to the standard Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT), which is widely used for ultrasonic imaging of concrete, the Half-Skip Total Focusing Method (HSTFM) configuration uses the target-scattered signals after a reflection from the back wall. The technique has been evaluated on both simulated and experimentally measured ultrasonic data on specimens fabricated with notches and cracks of different depths. Crack sizes were estimated by measuring the length of thresholded reflection signatures obtained in the images. The presented solution using half-skip modes serves as a supplementary technique to standard SAFT, in order to estimate the depth of surface-breaking cracks in concrete.
Depth measurement of small surface-breaking cracks using the Half-Skip Total Focusing Method

Abstract:The Total Focusing Method is an ultrasonic array post-processing technique which synthetically focuses at every pixel in an image space in both transmission and reception. The Half-Skip Total Focusing Method is a modification to the method in which either the transmitting or receiving ray path contains one reflection from the back surface of the component being inspected. When an array is placed on a parallel-sided component on the opposite side to that from which surface-breaking cracks initiate, the Half-Skip method enables specular reflections to be captured from the faces of the crack. In this paper, the Half-Skip method is applied to experimental array data from notches in a titanium component of 6 mm thickness and from fatigue cracks in a titanium component of 3 mm thickness. An ultrasonic array with a center frequency of 18 MHz is used. The HSTFM is found to be advantageous over the TFM for measuring the depth of the smaller notches and cracks, and vice-versa. The HSTFM is also successfully applied to simulated array data from a real stress corrosion crack shape.
Wavenumber-Domain Fast Reconstruction Technique Using Ultrasonic Scanning for Transverse Wave Imaging

Abstract:Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is of great significance to ensure the working of equipment in aerospace, petrochemical, railway, and other fields. Transverse wave ultrasonic testing is an important method for the detection of internal defects in solids due to its advantages of weak attenuation of vibration mode, low sound speed, and high spatial resolution. However, due to the vibration characteristics of piezoelectric wafers, conventional ultrasonic transducers cannot directly transmit and receive transverse waves and need to refract the transverse waves with the help of oblique incidence, and due to the particularity of oblique incidence, it is necessary to consider the refraction effect and slope detection simultaneously, which increases the burden of ultrasonic imaging reconstruction calculation. Therefore, a wavenumber-domain fast reconstruction technique using ultrasonic scanning for transverse waves is proposed. The method is built based on classical synthetic aperture focusing technology (SAFT) by integrating the coordinate transformation in wavenumber domain and transverse wave wavefield extrapolation for the application of oblique incidence transverse wave imaging. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can build excellent detection results when detecting transverse holes, cracks, and hemispherical flat-bottom holes with refraction angles from 20 degrees to 60 degrees. Compared with the time-domain synthetic aperture focusing technique, the computational efficiency of this method is improved by at least 100 times without losing the reconstruction accuracy.
Enhanced sizing for surface cracks in welded tubular joints using ultrasonic phased array and image processing

Abstract:This study presents an approach, which couples the ultrasonic wave reflection principle and image processing for the ultrasonic phased array, to enhance the sizing surface cracks in welded tubular joints. Ultrasonic phased array, as one of the non-destructive techniques, has wide applications in detecting and sizing of cracks in engineering structures. In detecting surface cracks in a welded tubular joint and potentially other types of welded components, however, the focused emitting ultrasonic wave, which is not normal to the surface crack plane, can create ultrasonic S-scan images with an inaccurate crack size and incorrect orientation. This study aims to improve the accuracy of the ultrasonic measurement through, 1) capturing multiple S-scan ultrasonic images by emitting the ultrasonic waves at different distances from the surface crack location; and 2) developing the algorithm based on the principle of ultrasonic wave reflections to improve the crack sizing and orientation from the ultrasonic S-scan images. Combined with the real-time crack monitoring during the low-cycle fatigue tests of tubular joints, the proposed scheme and algorithm achieves an enhanced agreement with other crack sizing approaches including the Alternating Current Potential Drop and measurements on the reproduced fracture surface using silicone-replica.

The Application of the Factorization Method to the Subsurface Imaging of Surface-Breaking Cracks

Abstract:A common location for cracks to appear is at the surface of a component; at the near surface, many nondestructive evaluation techniques are available to inspect for these, but at the far surface this is much more challenging. Ultrasonic imaging is proposed to enable far surface defect detection, location, and characterization. One specific challenge here is the presence of a strong reflection from the backwall, which can often mask the relatively small response from a defect. In this paper, the factorization method (FM) is explored for the application of subsurface imaging of the surface-breaking cracks. In this application, the component has two parallel surfaces, the crack is initiated from the far side and the phased array is attached on the near side. Ideally, the pure scattered field from a defect is needed for the correct estimation of the scatterer through the FM algorithm. However, the presence of the backwall will introduce a strong specular reflection into the measured data which should be removed before applying the FM algorithm. A novel subtraction method was developed to remove the backwall reflection. The performance of the FM algorithm and this subtraction method were tested with the simulated and experimental data. The experimental results showed a good consistency with the simulated results. It is shown that the FM algorithm can generate high-quality images to provide a good detection of the crack and an accurate sizing of the crack length. The subtraction method was able to provide a good backwall reflection removal in the case of small cracks (1-3 wavelengths).
Quantitative Detection of Small Crack by Nonlinear Laser Ultrasonics

Abstract:The sensitivity of nonlinear ultrasonic features to small crack is recognized much higher than what can be achieved by conventional linear features.However,in most of cases,the conventional nonlinear ultrasonic features can only locate the crack but difficult to quantify.In this paper,a novel technique for the quantification detection of small crack is presented.The structure needing to be detected is radiated by laser to produce a nonlinear ultrasound and its state space predictive model is constructed based on its dynamical responses in time domain.Then the Bhattacharyya Distance is adopted as the quantification metric to detect the crack.Furthermore,the crack is quantified using the feature extracted from the entire scanned area.An example of the approach and experimental measurement is given for alloys with different kinds of cracks.The experimental results show the reliability of the approach.

Abstract:Surface angled cracks on critical components in high-speed machinery can lead to fractures under stress and pressure, posing a significant threat to the operational safety of equipment. To detect surface angled cracks on critical components, this paper proposes a “Quantitative Detection Method for Surface Angled Cracks Based on Full-field Scanning Data.” By analyzing different ultrasonic signals in the full-field scanning data from laser ultrasonics, the width, angle, and length of surface angled cracks can be determined. This study investigates the propagation behavior of ultrasonic waves and their interaction with surface angled cracks through theoretical calculations. The crack width is solved by analyzing the distribution of Rayleigh waves in the full-field scanning data. This paper also discusses the differences in ultrasonic wave propagation between near-field and far-field detection and identifies the critical point between these regions. Different computational methods are employed to calculate the inclination angle and the crack endpoint at various scan positions. Four sets of experiments were conducted to validate the proposed method, with results showing that the errors in determining the width, angle, and length of the surface angled cracks were all within 5%. This confirms the feasibility of the method for detecting surface angled cracks. The quantitative detection of surface angled cracks on critical components using this method allows for a comprehensive assessment of the component’s condition, aiding in the prediction of service life and the mitigation of operational risks. This method shows promising application potential in areas such as aircraft engine blade inspection and gear inspection.

Abstract:We investigated the imaging capability of fixed-voltage fundamental wave amplitude difference (fixed-voltage FAD), which is one of the nonlinear ultrasonic phased array imaging techniques, for three-dimensional crack open/closed distribution. We fabricated two fatigue crack specimens with different thicknesses, which were selected to create different open/closed distributions in them. As a result of applying fixed-voltage FAD with mechanical scans to the thick and thin specimens, the difference in the crack open/closed distribution was successfully visualized. The results are in good agreement with fracture mechanics. Thus, it was demonstrated that fixed-voltage FAD is useful not only for nondestructive testing for aging infrastructures but also for the progress in fracture mechanics.

Abstract:In the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of metals, laser-induced ultrasound is efficient in detecting internal cracks because of its flexibility and noncontact capabilities. However, image reconstruction is challenging for characterizing inner cracks due to multimode waves and multiple lobes in the laser ultrasound field. Here, we proposed a two-step method to overcome the challenges. First, we propose an array-domain and beam-domain minimum variance (ABMV) beamformer to produce adaptive apodization weights that match the intrinsic beam pattern of the ultrasound, suppressing the interference and noise terms successfully. Second, images reconstructed from longitudinal, transverse, and mode-converted waves are fused to generate a high-quality image that accurately reveals the location and size of the cracks. Compared to traditional delay-and-sum (DAS) and minimum variance (MV) beamforming methods that generate images with either low resolution or low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the proposed beamformer achieves both the high resolution as MV and the high SNR as DAS. Furthermore, the multiwave fused image enables more precise crack detection than images reconstructed from any single mode of the waves. The simulation and experiment results show the superiority of the ABMV method. The proposed method overcomes the challenges of multimode and multilobe interference, holding great potential in laser ultrasound-based NDE.

Many of them are based on the concept of collecting the full matrix of data, obtained by firing each element of an ultrasonic phased array independently, while collecting the data with all elements. Because of the finite sound velocity in the test structure, 2 consecutive firings must be separated by a minimum time interval. Depending on the number of elements in a given array, this may become problematic if data must be collected within a short time, as it is often the case, for example, in an industrial context. An obvious way to decrease the duration of data capture is to use a sparse transmit aperture, in which only a restricted number of elements are used to transmit ultrasonic waves. This paper compares 2 approaches aimed at producing an image on the basis of restricted data: the common source method and the effective aperture technique. The effective aperture technique is based on the far-field approximation, and no similar approach exists for the near-field. This paper investigates the performance of this technique in near-field conditions, where most NDT applications are made. First, these methods are described and their point spread functions are compared with that of the Total Focusing Method (TFM), which consists of focusing the array at every point in the image. Then, a map of efficiency is given for the different algorithms in the near-field. The map can be used to select the most appropriate algorithm. Finally, this map is validated by testing the different algorithms on experimental data.

Abstract:Curved-surface components (CSC) are ubiquitous in engineering practice such as automobiles, aerospace and pipelines. However, they are prone to void and crack defects which greatly degenerate mechanical properties and are badly in need of effective detection. Ultrasonic full-matrix imaging is a conspicuous method in nondestructive testing. However, the research on high-quality imaging of CSC is still limited. In this paper, an ultrasonic imaging method based on frequency-domain reverse-time migration (FD-RTM) is developed for CSC at the first attempt, unrestricted to the surface shape of components. Through discretization of the acoustic wave equation in the frequency domain, the wavefields of all excitations are extrapolated together to obtain the source and received wavefields at each frequency. After implementation of the imaging conditions, the high-quality image of the defects is obtained. The efficaciousness of the method was examined with the numerical simulation and laboratory experiment, in both of which the void and V-shaped crack defects in copper and aluminum CSCs were imaged in high quality. Results have proven that FD-RTM has obvious advantages over the existing imaging methods for CSC. Therefore, the proposed method shows great potential in defect detection for CSC in various fields.
