Abstract:Trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFATE) is a promising biolubricant as an environmentally friendly substitute to conventional mineral-based lubricants. However, the issues of extensive energy consumption from vacuum maintenance and feedstock saponification caused by strong alkaline catalysts exist in current TFATEbased biolubricant synthesis. Here, sustainable production of biolubricant was achieved with methyl oleate (MO) from non-edible oil sources as the feedstock and moderate alkaline K2CO3 as the catalyst. Nitrogen gas stripping method instead of vacuum was adopted for methanol removal. The effects of agitation speed, N-2 flow rate, catalyst amount, MO to trimethylolpropane (TMP) molar ratio and temperature on MO conversion and TFATE selectivity were examined. The TFATE selectivity reached 95.6% under the optimized conditions. Leaching tests indicated neglectable K2CO3 dissolution in reaction products. The kinetic parameters for the three consecutive transesterification reactions were calculated. In addition, the synthesized biolubricants exhibit low acid value and volatility, moderate iodine value, superior thermal stability, and good rheological and frictional properties.

Biolubricant Production of 2‐ethylhexyl Palmitate by Transesterification over Unsupported Potassium Carbonate

Abstract:Owing to the decrease of global oil price, development of downstream value-added products is important to biodiesel industry. In this study, we used palmitic acid methyl ester (PAME) as a starting material to produce 2-ethylhexyl palmitate (2-EHP), an environmentally friendly biolubricant product, which was derived from the transesterification of fatty acid methyl esters and long chain fatty alcohols. Conventional synthetic routes of 2-EHP have disadvantages, including high catalyst price, low conversion efficiency, and pollution issues. To solve these problems, in situ transesterification of PAME with 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) was conducted over unsupported potassium carbonate as heterogeneous catalyst. The optimal reaction temperature, 2-EH to PAME molar ratio, and catalyst to PAME mass ratio were 180 degrees C, 3:1, and 3.0 wt%, respectively. The PAME conversion reached up to 100% within 1 hour under the optimal conditions. In addition, a kinetic model describing the experimental data over a temperature range of 160-180 degrees C was developed. The dependence of kinetic rate constant (k) on temperature was evaluated, and the activation energy (E-a) for the transesterification of PAME with 2-EH was calculated to be 57.04kJmol(-1).

Abstract:The present study reports the effects of three commercial immobilized lipases namely Novozyme 435 from Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB), Lipozyme TL IM from Thermomyces lanuginosus and Lipozyme RM IM from Rhizomucor miehei on the production of trimethylolpropane (TMP) ester from high oleic palm methyl ester (HO-PME) and TMP. The TMP ester is a promising base oil for biolubricants that are easily biodegradable and non-toxic to humans and the environment. Enzymatic catalysts are insensitive to free fatty acid (FFA) content, hence able to mitigate the side reactions and consequently reduce product separation cost. The potential of these enzymes to produce TMP ester in a solvent-free medium was screened at various reaction time (8, 23, 30 and 48 h), operating pressure (0.1, 0.3 and 1.0 mbar) and enzyme dosage (1, 3, 5 and 10% w/w). The reaction was conducted at a constant temperature of 70 °C and a molar ratio of 3.9:1 (HO-PME: TMP). Novozyme 435 produced the highest yield of TMP ester of 95.68 ± 3.60% under the following conditions: 23 h reaction time, 0.1 mbar operating pressure and 5% w/w of enzyme dosage. The key lubrication properties of the produced TMP ester are viscosity index (208 ± 2), pour point (− 30 ± − 2 °C), cloud point (− 15 ± − 2 °C), onset thermal degradation temperature (427.8 °C), and oxidation stability, RPVOT (42 ± 4 min). The properties of the TMP ester produced from the enzymatic transesterification are comparable to other vegetable oil-based biolubricants produced by chemical transesterification.

Abstract:The use of trimethylolpropane triesters as biodegradable lubricant base oil substitute mineral oils could significantly reduce the environmental pollution. In the present work, a commercial oleic acid (72% C18) was utilized as a precursor for the manufacture of trimethylolpropane triesters (TMPTE) through a two-step transesterification process. Oleic acid methyl ester (OME) produced from the first step was subsequently interacted with trimethylolpropane (TMP) using sodium methylate to produce TMPTE. The effect of the operating parameters, temperatures (90 °C, 100 °C, 110 °C, 120 °C, and 130 °C), molar ratio of OME to TMP (3:1, 4:1, 5:1, and 7:1), vacuum pressure (20, 50, 100, and 200 mbar), and catalyst amount (0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1.1(w/w)) was investigated. Under the selected reaction conditions (temperature 120 °C, oleic acid methyl ester to trimethylolpropane molar ratio 4:1, catalyst amount 0.9%w/w, vacuum pressure 20 mbar and reaction time 2 h), the final product composition was approximately 85.47% TMPTE, 10.80% TMPDE, 1.40%TMP ME, and 2.33% OME. The kinetics/mathematical model explains the chemical kinetics of transesterification of oleic acid methyl esters (OME) with trimethylolpropane (TMP) to produce biolubricant which has been investigated at temperature 120 °C. To support forward reaction, the excess amount of OME was increased by 10:1 (OME/TMP). The kinetic model suggested for the transesterification process of OME with TMP in this work based on three reversible series-parallel reaction mechanisms. The kinetics equations were solved using LINGO PROGRAM. A harmony between the experimental data and theoretically estimated values was achieved.

Abstract:Biolubricants do not cause the environmental pollution resulting from the manufacturing and use of mineral-based lubricants, but the commonly adopted chemical method of preparing biolubricants using expensive vegetable oils as raw materials is still environmentally and economically unsatisfactory. In this study, R. glutinis lipid with a high oleic-acid content was esterified with trimethylolpropane (TMP) by using the Candida sp. 99-125 enzyme in a solvent-free system, and the effect of the microbial oil with the high oleic-acid content on the performance of resulting biolubricants was investigated. The purpose of this study was to solve the problems of pollution caused by the chemical synthesis of biolubricants and of the uneconomical use of vegetable oils as raw materials. Further, this study aimed to improve the performance of biolubricants by using the microbial lipid with a high oleic-acid content. As a result of optimization of the reaction conditions, the yield of trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFAT) reached 89.5%. The synthesized biolubricants had excellent low-temperature lubrication performance (pour point = −45°C), and the physicochemical performance reached the ISOVG-46 grade. The results of the high-frequency reciprocating friction test (HRFT) show that the products have better tribological properties than mineral-based lubricants of the same viscosity grade(friction coefficient = 0.085; average wear scar diameter = 187 μm).

Abstract:Renewable lubricant base oils derived from biomass can effectively mitigate environmental challenges while exhibiting exceptional properties. Herein, we propose a novel approach for the synthesis of ester-based and alkane-based renewable lubricant base oils, achieving an impressive yield of up to 99%. This strategy involves the utilization of methyl oleate and bio-based aromatics through two distinct chemistries: alkylation and alkylation followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Among the various Lewis acid catalysts screened, AlCl3 demonstrated superior performance and achieved a remarkable maximum yield of 99% for the alkylation product under optimized reaction conditions. Subsequent hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of these alkylation products using Ir-ReOx/SiO2 catalyst resulted in the production of alkane-based lubricant base oils, with an impressive maximum yield of 96.3%. The molecular size and branching of ester-based and alkane-based products can be finely adjusted by employing diverse aromatic compounds during the alkylation process, thereby enabling tuning of their lubricant properties. The as-synthesized base oils exhibit superior properties to petroleum-derived Group III based oil and demonstrate comparable performance to synthetic ester and PAO base oil. The presented strategy for synthesizing renewable base oils offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum-derived counterparts, thereby potentially mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract:A study about the production and characterization of biodiesel and, especially, biolubricants from different raw materials (ie, rapeseed, a mixture of corn and sunflower, and frying oils) is here performed. Optimal chemical conditions were used to carry out the transesterification of biodiesel and biolubricants, hence obtaining high yields in all investigated cases. The physical properties, such as fatty acid methyl ester profile, viscosity, viscosity index and oxidative stability, among others, are analyzed. The biodiesel products comply with the standards, according to the characteristics covered in this research. Regarding the biolubricants, the viscosity values are analogous to those found in the literature but showing longer induction points. These properties appear to be highly influenced by the fatty acid profile of the raw material, which is an important factor for both biodiesel and biolubricant performance. Therefore, the initial characterization of vegetable oils is an important stage for the optimal design of biorefineries. Finally, the use of transesterification for biodiesel and biolubricant production is also justified, as many valuable products (eg, glycerol, fatty acid methyl esters, and fatty acid complex esters) are obtained and some by‐products (eg, methanol) can be reused.

Abstract:The immobilized lipase-catalyzed transesterification of Jatropha curcas L. seed oil and methanol for biodiesel production in tert-butanol was investigated The effects of different tert-butanol volume, methanol molar ratio, reaction temperature, reaction time and immobilized lipase amount on the total conversion were systematically analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM. RSM analysis showed good correspondence between experimental and predicted values. The optimal conditions for the transesterification were a reaction time of 17.355 h, a reaction temperature of 34.868 degrees C, an immobilized lipase amount of 12.435 %, a methanol molar ratio of 5.282:1, a tert-butanol volume ratio of 0.577:1. The optimal predicted yield of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) was 88.5 % and the actual value was 88.1 %. The predicted yield of fatly acid esters and the real one was very close, indicating that the RSM based on central composite design (CCD) was adaptable for a FAME study for the present transesterification system. Moreover, the infrared spectum of biodiesel showed the characteric bands of C=O, O-C-O, C=C and (CH2)n. Furthermore, GC-linked mass spectrometry showed that biodiesel was mainly composed of the methyl esters of hexadecanoic, 9,12-octadecadienoic and 9-octadecadienoic acid

Abstract:The methanolysis of jojoba oil has been studied in the presence of tin powder, dibutyltin diacetate (C4H9)2Sn(OOCCH3)2, dioctyltin diacetate (C8H17)2Sn(OOCCH3)2, dibutyltin oxide (C4H9)2SnO, dioctyltin oxide (C8H17)2SnO, diphenyltin oxide (C6H5)2SnO, dibutyltin chloride dihydroxide (C4H9)2Sn(OH)2Cl, butyltinhydroxide hydrate (C4H9)Sn(=O)OH.xH2O, Ni nanoparticles and Pd nanoparticles act as catalysts. Among these, 1 weight % of dibutyltin diacetate shows the maximum conversion. Then, methanolysis of sunflower oil, neem oil, rocket seed oil and linseed oil into methyl esters studied in the presence of 1% dibutyltin diacetate as a catalyst and was compared their percentage conversions. The experimental yield for the conversion of jojoba oil, sunflower oil, neem oil, rocket seed oil and linseed oil into biodiesel was found to be 71%, 51%, 50.78%, 40.90% and 39.66%, respectively. The experimental yield of the conversion of jojoba oil into methyl esters was found to be increased up to 96% by increasing reaction time, without emulsion formation. The synthesis of jojoba seed oil biodiesel (JSOB), soybean oil biodiesel (SOB), neem oil biodiesel (NOB), rocket seed oil biodiesel (RSOB) and linseed oil biodiesel (LSOB) was confirmed by NMR (1H & 13C) and FT-IR analyses of biodiesel.
Production of New Surfactant-free Microemulsion Biofuels: Phase Behavior and Nanostructure Identification

Abstract:New surfactant-free microemulsion biofuels are synthesized and characterized in this work. Moringa and safflower plants have been used for providing the required oils because of their excellent resistance in dry and harsh environmental conditions. Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, oleic acid, 1,4-dioxane, and dibutyl ether have been used as biofuel additives. The obtained phase behavior results show that the microemulsion region of ternary phase diagrams in these systems decreases as follows: oleic acid > 1-octanol > 1-heptanol > MTBE > dibutyl ether >1,4-dioxane. The nanostructures formed in these types of ternary mixtures are investigated by conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. Three different micro regions, including ethanol in oil (E/O), bicontinuous (B.C.), and oil in ethanol (O/E), have been recognized using electrical conductivity experiments along ethanol dilution lines. According to the presented results, the E/O region regarding the studied microemulsions is wider than the B.C. and O/E regions. Thus, the proposed formulation according to the reverse micelle microemulsion formation can be considered as a useful approach for biofuel production. It is also shown that the kinematic viscosities and densities of the formulated biofuels in this article satisfy the approved biofuel standards.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to study the biodiesel production from cotton seed oil by lipase produced by Pichia guilliermondii lipase, which was immobilized onto hydrophobic magnetic particles (HMPs). The optimum reaction conditions were determined for lipase dosage, methanol-to-oil molar ratio, temperature and water content. Using response surface methodology, a quadratic polynomial equation was obtained for fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) content by multiple regression analysis. Verification experiments confirmed the validity of the predicted model. The optimal conditions for the enzymatic transesterification were temperature of 38.76 square, 31.3% immobilized lipase, 10.4% water content, and a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 4.715:1. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that biodiesel was mainly composed of the methyl esters of hexadecanoic, 9,12-octadecadienoic and 9-octadecadienoic acid.

Abstract:The transesterification of rapeseed and castor oil methyl esters with different alcohols (2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 1-heptanol and 4-methyl-2-pentanol) and titanium isopropoxide as a catalyst, to produce biolubricants, was carried out. Parameters such as temperature, alcohol/methyl ester molar ratio, and catalyst concentration were studied to optimize the process. The reaction evolution was monitored with the decrease in FAME concentration by gas chromatography. In general, the reaction was almost complete in two hours, obtaining over 93% conversions. All the variables studied influenced on the reaction yields. Once the optimum conditions for the maximum conversion and minimum costs were selected, a characterization of the biolubricants obtained, along with the study of the influence of the kind of alcohol used, was carried out. The biolubricants had some properties that were better than mineral lubricants (flash points between 222 and 271 °C), needing the use of additives when they do not comply with the standards (low viscosity for rapeseed biolubricant, for instance). There was a clear influence of fatty acids of raw materials (oleic and ricinoleic acids as majority fatty acids in rapeseed and castor oil, respectively) and the structure of the alcohol used on the final features of the biolubricants.

Abstract:The fast depletion of conventional fuel supplies has forced the world to find suitable substitutes to overcome the expected energy crisis. Fossil fuels also contribute to global warming because of their harmful emissions. Biofuels are sustainable and have an environmental friendly nature. Biodiesel can be sourced from both edible and non-edible oils to replace fossil fuels. To avoid a shortage of food supply it is preferred to produce biodiesel from non-edible oils. In this research, Litchi-chinensis seed oil (LSO) is used as a feedstock to synthesize biodiesel employing transesterification with a microwave oven. The catalyst (KOH), used in this research was extracted from the potato waste. The sun-dried potato waste was converted into ash. The produced ash is then dissolved in distilled water, leading to a 34% yield of potassium hydroxide (KOH). The transesterification achieves 92.9% conversion rate under the conditions, including 30% microwave power utilization, a catalyst loading of 15% (W/W), a stirring speed of 700 RPM, a methanol concentration of 70% (V/V) with 8 minute reaction time. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in comparison with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) have been utilized for the optimization of biodiesel yield, giving efficient results with errors of 0.003% for RSM and 0.005% for ANN. Consequently, the study reports optimized biodiesel yields of 92.9% (experimental), 93.27% (RSM), and 92.40% (ANN). Physicochemical properties including kinematic viscosity (4.4 mm2/s) at 40 °C, density (875 kg/m3) at 15 °C, cetane number (53.2), calorific value (38.8 MJ/kg), flash point (175 °C), oxidative stability (6.1 h), and the cold flow properties were determined with respect to the ASTM and EN standards. The findings reveal that biofuels primarily support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7 and 13, with a prime focus on 'affordable and clean energy' and 'climate action', respectively.

Abstract:Biolubricants may be obtained from vegetable oils using appropriate chemical modifications, to improve their physicochemical properties for lubrication applications. In this study, the esterification of a free fatty acid (FFA) with long chain alcohols was performed using sulfonated mesoporous silica as catalyst. Fresh and functionalized MCM-41 samples were prepared to evaluate the effect of the sulfonic surface group on the esterification reaction. MCM-41 was functionalized via post-synthesis modification using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) as silylating agent. The synthesized catalysts were characterized using several techniques. After the functionalization, a decrease in the apparent surface area and pore diameter were observed. The MCM-41/SO3H sample was applied in the esterification reaction of oleic acid (as a FFA model) using two different long-chain alcohols (octanol and 2-ethylhexanol). Abstract:This study presents an investigation of the optimization and kinetic aspects of the microwave (MW) heating transesterification process for converting dairy waste scum oil (DWSO) into biodiesel using lithium impregnated calcium oxide from eggshell (Li-ECaO) as a catalyst. The transesterification was done via microwave heating while varying catalyst loading (1 – 5 wt.%), methanol to oil molar ratio (6 – 18:1), temperature (55 – 750C), and reaction time in the range of 5 – 25 min. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimized the process parameters, yielding an impressive 90.5% biodiesel yield. The optimal operating conditions were determined 3 wt.% catalyst loading, 18:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, a reaction temperature of 65oC, and a reaction time of 25 minutes. A thorough kinetic analysis of the transesterification reaction for the MW heating transesterification of DWSO by Li-ECaO was performed at various temperatures (45 – 75oC). The pseudo-first order kinetic study of the reaction revealed a moderately low activation energy of 38.86 kJ/mol and a high pre-exponential factor of 1141.27 s -1 , which is consistent with previous studies. Importantly, the observed activation energy was lower than that of conventional methods, highlighting the potential of MW heating as a viable technique for future biodiesel production, and using wastes such as DWSO and eggshell could contribute to being greener and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:The process of immobilized lipase catalyzed transesterification of cottonseed oil for biodiesel production was optimized by response surface methodology.With fatty acid methyl ester conversion rate as index,the effects of reaction time,reaction temperature,immobilized lipase amount(on the basis of cottonseed oil mass),molar ratio of methanol to cottonseed oil and volume ratio of tert-butanol to cottonseed oil on the conversion rate were studied.The optimal reaction conditions were determined as follows: reaction time 19.128 h,reaction temperature 37.801℃,immobilized lipase amount 12.070%,molar ratio of methanol to cottonseed oil 4.949,volume ratio of tert-butanol to cottonseed oil 0.323.The verification test showed that the conversion rate reached 92.9%,which had a high degree of agreement with the response suface methodology predicted value(94.3%).
