Abstract:Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling within the newly discovered organic charge-transfer complexes. A systemic understanding of the origin of organic ferroelectricity and magnetism is provided. Furthermore, based on the recent mechanism of the magnetoelectric coupling effect: spin-ordering-induced electric polarization and ferroelectricity-induced spin alignment, we further present the recent progress in organic charge-transfer multiferroics and metal-organic framework multiferroics. The coexistence of polarization and magnetism at room temperature of organic charge-transfer complexes will be critical for the development of all-organic multiferroics.
A DFT Study on CH3NH3MnBr3: a Novel Multiferroic Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite

Abstract:Nowadays, ferroelectric organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite represents a crucial issue since it exhibits a huge potential to enhance solar cell efficiency significantly. Furthermore, introducing magnetism into the polar organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites can open up new possibilities for designing novel multiferroic materials and expanding their practical applications. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the prototypical CH3NH3MnBr3 using first-principles calculations. Our findings suggest that this material is a promising organic-inorganic hybrid multiferroic, exhibiting ferroelectricity and G-type antiferromagnetism simultaneously. The estimate of the polarization for the orthorhombic phase is similar to 22.11 mu C cm(-2). The contributions of the polar MA cations and MnBr3 inorganic framework to the polarization are disentangled to be around 32 and 68% for MA cations and the MnBr3 inorganic framework, respectively. The interplay between them is analyzed in terms of energy and electronic structure, suggesting possible routes for the transition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric states and the polarization switching path.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Molecular ferroelectrics have gradually aroused great interest in both fundamental scientific research and technological applications because of their easy processing, light weight and mechanical flexibility. Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics (HOIPFs), as a class of molecule-based ferroelectrics, have diverse functionalities owing to their unique structure and have become a hot spot in molecular ferroelectrics research. Therefore, they are extremely attractive in the field of ferroelectrics. However, there seems to be a lack of systematic review of their design, performance and potential applications. Herein, we review the recent development of HOIPFs from lead-based, lead-free and metal-free perovskites, and outline the versatility of these ferroelectrics, including piezoelectricity for mechanical energy-harvesting and optoelectronic properties for photovoltaics and light detection. Furthermore, a perspective view of the challenges and future directions of HOIPFs is also highlighted.

Ferroelasticity in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Ruddlesden$-$Popper Perovskites Mediated by Cross-Plane Intermolecular Coupling and Metastable Funnel-Like Phases

Abstract:Ferroelasticity describes a phenomenon in which a material exhibits two or more equally stable orientation variants and can be switched from one form to another under an applied stress. Recent works have demonstrated that two-dimensional layered organic$-$inorganic hybrid Ruddlesden$-$Popper perovskites can serve as ideal platforms for realizing ferroelasticity, however, the ferroelastic (FE) behavior of structures with a single octahedra layer such as (BA)$_2$PbI$_4$ (BA = CH$_3$(CH$_2$)$_3$NH$_3$$^+$) has remained elusive. Herein, by using a combined first-principles and metadynamics approach, the FE behavior of (BA)$_2$PbI$_4$ under mechanical and thermal stresses is uncovered. FE switching is mediated by cross-plane intermolecular coupling, which could occur through multiple rotational modes, rendering the formation of FE domains and several metastable paraelastic (PE) phases. Such metastable phases are akin to wrinkled structures in other layered materials and can act as a "funnel" of hole carriers. Thermal excitation tends to flatten the kinetic barriers of the transition pathways between orientation variants, suggesting an enhanced concentration of metastable PE states at high temperatures, while halogen mixing with Br raises these barriers and conversely lowers the concentration of PE states. These findings reveal the rich structural diversity of (BA)$_2$PbI$_4$ domains, which can play a vital role in enhancing the optoelectronic properties of the perovskite and raise exciting prospects for mechanical switching, shape memory, and information processing.

Abstract:The molecular ferroelectric materials are desirable for their light weight, mechanical flexibility, and low processing temperature. A novel metal-free perovskite [MDABCO](NH_4)I_3 (MDABCO stands for N-methyl-N′-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) has been discovered recently with high polarization and high phase transition temperature, which is comparable to the inorganic ferroelectric materials such as BaTiO_3. However, the comprehensive theoretical understanding of the domain structure and structure–property relationship is still lacking for the molecular ferroelectrics. Herein, the domain morphology and electrical properties of the (111)-oriented [MDABCO](NH_4)I_3 films are explored via the phase-field simulations. The misfit strain-temperature phase diagram is established for (111)-oriented [MDABCO](NH_4)I_3 films through parameter sweep, where the domain morphologies and phase evolutions are investigated. Moreover, the macroscopic dielectric and piezoelectric properties are calculated, showing that these properties can be enhanced with medium tensile strain (~ 2%). We expect these findings to serve as a road map for the design of high-performance metal-free molecular ferroelectric materials. Abstract:Ferroelastic hybrid perovskite materials have been revealed the significance in the applications of switches, sensors, actuators, etc. However, it remains a challenge to design high-temperature ferroelastic to meet the requirements for the practical applications. Herein, we reported an one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHP) (3-methylpyrazolium)CdCl3 (3-MBCC), which possesses a mmmF2/ m ferroelastic phase transition at 263 K. Moreover, utilizing crystal engineering, we replace ‒CH3 with ‒NH2 and ‒H, which increases the intermolecular force between organic cations and inorganic frameworks. The phase transition temperature of (3-aminopyrazolium)CdCl3 (3-ABCC), and (pyrazolium)CdCl3 (BCC) increased by 73 K and 10 K, respectively. Particularly, BCC undergoes an unconventional inverse temperature symmetry breaking (ISTB) ferroelastic phase transition around 273 K. Differently, it transforms from a high symmetry low-temperature paraelastic phase (point group 2/m) to a low symmetry high-temperature ferroelastic phase (point group 1 ¯ ) originating from the rare mechanism of displacement of organic cations phase transition. It means that crystal BCC retains in ferroelastic phase above 273 K until melting point (446 K). Furthermore, characteristic ferroelastic domain patterns on crystal BCC are confirmed with polarized optical microscopy. Our study enriches the molecular mechanism of ferroelastics in the family of organic-inorganic hybrids and opens up a new avenue for exploring high-temperature ferroic materials.

Abstract:Since the concept of "multiferroic" was first proposed in 1968, the coupling effect between different ferroic orders has attracted great interest in energy, information, and biomedical fields. However, the fully ferroelectric-fully ferroelastic effect has never been experimentally observed in hybrid perovskites, even though this effect was predicted to exist half a century ago. Realizing such cross-linking effects of polarization vectors and strain tensors has always been a huge challenge because of the complex difference in these two ferroic origins. Here, we report a multiferroic with full ferroelectricity and full ferroelasticity in two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites based on ferroelectrochemistry. The dynamic molecular reorientations endow (cyclohexanemethylaminium)2PbCl4 with a desired symmetry change of 4̅2mFmm2 at a Curie temperature of 411.8 K. More strikingly, the switchable evolution of ferroelastic domains was directly observed under the control of either electric or mechanical fields, which is the first experimental observation of a fully ferroelectric-fully ferroelastic effect in hybrid perovskites. This work would provide new insights into understanding the intrinsic cross-linking mechanism between ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity toward the development of multichannel interactive microelectronic devices.
Strain-induced Improper Ferroelectricity in Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Halides

Abstract:Activating multiple symmetry modes and promoting a strong coupling between different modes by strain are indispensable to stabilize a polar ferroelectric (FE) phase from a nonpolar perovskite. Herein, through first-principles calculations, we propose an undiscovered and general avenue to engineering ferroelectricity in photovoltaic perovskites with a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) structure. It is demonstrated that an experimentally accessible compressive strain can induce an in-plane polarization in RP perovskite halides thin films, resulting in an unusual paraelectric to FE phase transition. The detailed analysis on structure and energy reveals that the unusual FE phase transition in the perovskite halides stems from the strong coupling between strain and antiferrodistortive (AFD) mode. Further calculations show that the strain-AFD coupling-induced ferroelectricity is not only exhibited by perovskite halides but also observed in perovskite sulfides such as Ba3Zr2S7. Moreover, it is found that the strained FE thin film possesses a suitable band gap of 1.6 eV for photovoltaic application. These findings not only unfold a general way to engineering nonpolar-to-polar transition, but also open an avenue to design optimal FE semiconductors for solar cell applications.

Abstract:Ferroelastic materials with high phase transition temperature have broad application prospects in information conversion and storage, shape memory, energy conversion, hyperelasticity, etc. However, most of the current reports focus on inorganic ferroelastic materials. Inorganic ferroelastic materials have the disadvantages of high energy consumption and harmful metals, which limit their application in practical work. In contrast, organic ferroelastic materials have the advantages of structural adjustability, environmental protection, easy processing, low cost, mechanical flexibility and so on, which have great development potential in new ferroelastic materials. Here, we have successfully designed and synthesized a pair of homochiral enantiomers [(R/S)‐4‐fluorobenzoic acid‐2‐amino‐2‐phenylethanol](R‐ and S‐F) using the chemical design strategy of H/F substitution. Compared with the non‐F substitution[(R/S)‐benzoic acid‐2‐amino‐2‐phenylethanol] (R‐ and S‐H), they undergo 2F1‐type ferroelastic phase transitions at 370 K. Notably, the ferroelastic domains of R/S‐F can be controlled through two physical channels that are temperature and stress, showing great potential in dual‐channel switches.

Abstract:Abstract Organic martensitic compounds are an emerging type of smart material with intriguing physical properties including thermosalient effect, ferroelasticity, and shape memory effect. However, due to the high structural symmetry and limited design theories for these materials, the combination of ferroelectricity and martensitic transformation has rarely been found in organic systems. Here, based on the chemical design strategies for molecular ferroelectrics, we show a series of asymmetric 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide derivatives with the homochiral amine and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine- N -oxyl components, which adopt the low-symmetric polar structure and so allow ferroelectricity. Upon H/F substitution, the fluorinated compounds exhibit reversible ferroelectric and martensitic transitions at 399 K accompanied by a large thermal hysteresis of 132 K. This large thermal hysteresis with two competing (meta)-stable phases is further confirmed by density functional theory calculations. The rare combination of martensitic phase transition and ferroelectricity realizes the bistability with two different ferroelectric phases at room temperature. Our finding provides insight into the exploration of martensitic ferroelectric compounds with potential applications in switchable memory devices, soft robotics, and smart actuators.

Ferroelastic-switching-driven colossal shear strain and piezoelectricity in a hybrid ferroelectric

Abstract:Materials that can produce large controllable strains are widely used in shape memory devices, actuators and sensors. Great efforts have been made to improve the strain outputs of various material systems. Among them, ferroelastic transitions underpin giant reversible strains in electrically-driven ferro/piezoelectrics and thermally- or magneticallydriven shape memory alloys. However, large-strain ferroelastic switching in conventional ferroelectrics is very challenging while magnetic and thermal controls are not desirable for applications. Here, we demonstrate an unprecedentedly large shear strain up to 21.5 % in a hybrid ferroelectric, C6H5N(CH3)3CdCl3. The strain response is about two orders of magnitude higher than those of top-performing conventional ferroelectric polymers and oxides. It is achieved via inorganic bond switching and facilitated by the structural confinement of the large organic moieties, which prevents the undesired 180-degree polarization switching. Furthermore, Br substitution can effectively soften the bonds and result in giant shear piezoelectric coefficient (d35 ~ 4800 pm/V) in Br-rich end of the solid solution, C6H5N(CH3)3CdBr3xCl3(1-x). The superior electromechanical properties of the compounds promise their potential in lightweight and high energy density devices, and the strategy described here should inspire the development of next-generation piezoelectrics and electroactive materials based on hybrid ferroelectrics.

Abstract:There is great interest in hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The compounds [C(NH$_{2}$)$_{3}$]M(HCOO)$_{3}$, where M=Cu$^{2+}$ or Cr$^{2+}$ are Jahn-Teller (JT) active ions, are MOF with perovskite topology which crystallizes in polar space group Pna2$_{1}$. In inorganic compounds, octahedral tilting and Jahn-Teller structural distortions are usually non-polar distortions. However, in this MOF cooperative interactions between the antiferro-distortive distortions of the framework and the C(NH2)$_{3}$ organic cation via hydrogen bonding breaks the inversion symmetry and induces a ferroelectric polarization.[Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 50, 5847, 2011] Our ab-initio study supports the picture of an orbital-order-induced ferroelectricity, a rare example of dipolar ordering caused by electronic degrees of freedom. The switching of polarization direction implies the reversal of the weak ferromagnetic component. The microscopic mechanism in this JT-based MOF with ABX$_{3}$ perovskite structure displays a Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric (HIF) state, arising from a trilinear coupling between different structural deformations that comprise tilting, rotations and Jahn-Teller distortions of both the BX$_{3}$ framework and the organic cation at the A sites. Since these distortion modes in perovskite-inorganic compounds usually freeze-in at elevated temperatures, the trilinear coupling in MOF compounds may provide an interesting route towards high-temperature multiferroicity. These results offer an important starting point for tailoring multiferroic properties in this emerging class of materials for various technological applications. In particular, the high tunability of the ferroelectric polarization by means of the modification of the organic A cation has been recently shown[J. Am. Chem. Soc. 135 18126 (2013)]

Abstract:The ability to achieve multiple ferroic orderings can provide more selectivity for diverse applications such as non-volatile memory, energy conversion, pressure sensors and so on. Molecular crystals occupy an important position in ferroic materials due to their structural diversity, easily preparation, low cost and mechanical flexibility. However, it has been a great challenge to satisfy multiple ferroic ordering in a single material that constrainted by stringent crystal symmetry requirements. Herein, we have achieved multiple ferroic ordering coexistence in (imidazolium)3PbBr5 by utilizing ingenious molecular orientation dynamics. Confined by unique skeleton of corner-shared lead halide octahedrons, the molecular out-of-plane and in-plane reorientational motions of imidazolium cations modulated by thermal stimulation make for ferroelectric and ferroelastic phase transitions. This work would offer instructive clues to design multiple ferroic orderings in a single material for emerging application potential.

A High-Temperature Halide Perovskite Molecular Ferroelastic With Evident Dielectric Switching

Abstract:Ferroelastic materials have attracted wide attention due to their great application prospects in energy and information conversion, data storage applications, etc. In this report, we designed and synthesized an organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite ferroelastic (TMTB)CdCl3 (TMTB: N,N,N-trimethyl-tert-butylammonium) under the quasi-spherical strategy. (TMTB)CdCl3 shows a structural phase transition at around 356 K (T-c). In the ferroelastic phase, a quasi-spherical TMTB cation is orientationally ordered with the symmetry of mmm. Above the T-c in the paraelastic phase, the crystal symmetry of 6/mmm compels the TMTB cation with multiple orientations showing spherical distribution. The phase transition with an Aizu notation of 6/mmmFmmm agrees well with one of the 94 ferroelastic species. Under a polarized light microscope, the evolution of ferroelastic domains was visually observed. The calculated spontaneous strain value of (TMTB)CdCl3 is 0.0507 based on the lattice parameters. Moreover, (TMTB)CdCl3 shows prominent 'ON'/'OFF' dielectric switches with good reproducibility. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were further performed to explore the 'spherical' - 'quasi-spherical' variation of the TMTB cation. This work demonstrates that the quasi-spherical molecular strategy provides a shortcut for discovering new molecular ferroelastic materials, and also provides guidance for the directional design of functional materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelastics with high-temperature reversible phase transitions are very rare and have become one of the research hotspots in the field of ferroelastic materials. Herein, we report three new layered organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites based on halogen-substituted phenethylaminium, (3-XC6H5CH2CH2NH3)2[CdCl4] (X = F (1), Cl (2) and Br (3)). They undergo structural phase transitions at 376/371 K, 436/430 K, and 421/411 K, respectively, between the isomorphic high-temperature phases (space group I4/mmm, Z = 2) and different room-temperature phases with the reduced structural symmetries, i.e., P21/a (Z = 2) in 1, P 1 ¯ (Z = 4) in 2, and P21/a (Z = 4) in 3, respectively. These ferroelastic transitions arise from the order-disorder transition of organic cations together with the synchronous displacement of inorganic layers, accompanying with ferroelastic spontaneous strains of 0.16, 0.13, and 0.12 for 1−3, respectively. By enriching layered perovskite ferroelastics based on halogen-substituted cations, this work provides important clues for exploring new ferroic materials based on hybrid crystals.

Abstract:Abstract Ferroelasticity represents material domains possessing spontaneous strain that can be switched by external stress. Three-dimensional perovskites like methylammonium lead iodide are determined to be ferroelastic. Layered perovskites have been applied in optoelectronic devices with outstanding performance. However, the understanding of lattice strain and ferroelasticity in layered perovskites is still lacking. Here, using the in-situ observation of switching domains in layered perovskite single crystals under external strain, we discover the evidence of ferroelasticity in layered perovskites with layer number more than one, while the perovskites with single octahedra layer do not show ferroelasticity. Density functional theory calculation shows that ferroelasticity in layered perovskites originates from the distortion of inorganic octahedra resulting from the rotation of aspherical methylammonium cations. The absence of methylammonium cations in single layer perovskite accounts for the lack of ferroelasticity. These ferroelastic domains do not induce non-radiative recombination or reduce the photoluminescence quantum yield.

Abstract:Molecular-based ferroelastics with dielectric switching properties are highly desirable for their applications on microelectronic dielectric switches, sensors, data storage, and so on. However, the current reports mostly focus on organic-inorganic hybrids containing toxic heavy metal atoms, and the relatively low phase transition temperature limits their application. In this paper, low-toxic organic salt ferroelastic enantiomers (R/S)-4-fluoro-1-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octonium chloride [(R/S)-F-321] were designed and synthesized under the introducing chirality strategy. They undergo a 432F422-type ferroelastic phase transition with a high Curie temperature (T c) of 470 K, simultaneously exhibiting excellent dielectric switching characteristics. In addition to the ordered-disordered movement of cations, the significant displacement of anions is also responsible for such high T c and large dielectric switching ratios, which is very rare in molecular-based switching materials. This work enriches the development of molecular ferroelastic switching materials and gives inspiration for the exploration of environmentally friendly high T c organic salt ferroelastics with prominent switching performances.

An anomalous ferroelastic phase transition arising from an unusual cis-/anti-conformational reversal of polar organic cations

Abstract:Hybrid ferroelastics have attracted increasing attentions for their potential applications as mechanical switches, among which the sporadically-documented anomalous ferroelastic phase transitions, i.e. , ferroelasticity appears in high-temperature phase rather than low-temperature phase, are of particular interests but have not been well understood at molecular level. By judiciously choosing a polar and flexible organic cation (Me 2 NH(CH 2 ) 2 Br + ) with cis -/ anti - conformations as A-site component, we obtained two new polar hybrid ferroelastics, A 2 [MBr 6 ] (M = Te for 1 , and Sn for 2 ), which undergo distinct thermal-induced ferroelastic phase transitions. The larger [TeBr 6 ] 2− anions well anchor the adjacent organic cations and essentially endow 1 with a conventional ferroelastic transition ( P 2 1 → Pm 2 1 n ) arising from a common order-disorder transition of organic cations without conformation changes. Whereas the smaller [SnBr 6 ] 2− anions could interact with the adjacent organic cations in energetically-similar sets of intermolecular interactions, enabling 2 to undergo an anomalous ferroelastic phase transition ( P 2 1 2 1 2 1 → P 2 1 ) arising from an unusual cis -/ anti -comformational reversal of organic cations. These two instances well demonstrate the crucial roles of the delicate balance of the intermolecular interactions for inducing the anomalous ferroelastic phase transitions, providing important clues for seeking new multifunctional ferroelastic materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted intense interests due to their quantum well structure and tunable excitonic properties. As an alternative to the well-studied divalent metal hybrid perovskite based on Pb 2+ , Sn 2+ and Cu 2+ , the trivalent metal-based (eg. Sb 3+ with ns2 outer-shell electronic configuration) hybrid perovskite with the A 3 M 2 X 9 formula (A = monovalent cations, M = trivalent metal, X = halide) offer intriguing possibilities for engineering ferroic properties. Here, we synthesized 2D ferroelectric hybrid perovskite (TMA) 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 with measurable in-plane and out-of-plane polarization. Interestingly, (TMA) 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 can be intercalated with FeCl 4 ions to form a ferroelastic and piezoelectric single crystal, (TMA) 4 -Fe(iii)Cl 4 -Sb 2 Cl 9 . Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the unusual mechanism of ferroelectric-ferroelastic crossover in these crystals.
