Abstract:Redox-induced release dynamics of arsenic (As) in an abandoned geogenic arsenic-contaminated gold mine spoil in Ghana has never been studied. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effects of varied soil redox conditions on mobilisation and speciation of As from an abandoned highly contaminated gold mine spoil (with 4,283 mg As/kg soil) using an automated biogeochemical microcosm set-up. We also studied the impact of redox potential (EH)-dependent changes of pH, Fe, Mn, Al, S, Cl-, SO42-, DOC, DIC, DC, DN and SUVA on the release dynamics of As. As mineralogical composition and speciation were further determined using a synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES). Linear combination fits of XANES results indicated that scorodite (FeAsSO4) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS) are the two major As-containing minerals in the studied mine spoil. Geochemical fractionation using sequential extraction procedure indicated greater proportions of the extracted As in the amorphous iron oxide fraction III (1390.13 mg kg-1, 32.5% of the total As) and residual fraction V (2591.67 mg kg-1, 60.5% of the total As). Concentrations of dissolved Fe and SUVA were higher during reducing conditions and decreased under oxidising conditions and both showed negative significant relationships with EH (EH and SUVA: r = -0.76, P < 0.01; EH and Fe: r = -0.75). Mobilisation of As was greater under reducing conditions (dissolved As = 136.68 mg/L) than in oxidising environments (dissolved As = 8.06 mg/L). The release of As under low EH can be explained by the associated reductive dissolution of Fe oxides, as demonstrated by the high positive significant relationship between Fe and As (r = +0.97, P < 0.01). Dissolved As release dynamics can also be linked to desorption of aromatic carbon compounds on the surfaces of dissolved organic carbon, as demonstrated by the high positive significant correlation between SUVA and As (r = +0.573, P < 0.01). Further, the release dynamics of dissolved As was also affected by changes in pH (r = -0.4, P < 0.05), but were not affected by redox-induced dynamics of Mn, Al, S, Cl-, SO42-, DOC, DIC, DC, DN. We conclude that conditions such as flooding and high rainfall in this contaminated mine spoil could create reducing conditions, leading to reductive dissolution of the arsenopyrite As-bearing primary mineral and may lead to higher As release into the groundwater, translocation into the food chain with potential impacts on human health.Keywords: Arsenopyrite, redox chemistry, arsenic mobilisation, gold mine spoil, reductive and oxidative dissolution.

Abstract:The association of arsenic (As) with colloidal particles could facilitate its transport to adjacent water systems or alter its availability in soil-rice systems. However, little is known about the size distribution and composition of particle-bound As in paddy soils, particularly under changing redox conditions. Here, we incubated four As-contaminated paddy soils with distinctive geochemical properties to study the mobilization of particle-bound As during soil reduction and subsequent reoxidation. Using transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy and asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation, we identified organic matter (OM)-stabilized colloidal Fe, most likely in the form of (oxy)hydroxide-clay composite, as the main arsenic carriers. Specifically, colloidal As was mainly associated with two size fractions of 0.3-40 and >130 kDa. Soil reduction facilitated the release of As from both fractions, whereas reoxidation caused their rapid sedimentation, coinciding with solution Fe variations. Further quantitative analysis demonstrated that As concentrations positively correlated with both Fe and OM concentrations at nanometric scales (0.3-40 kDa) in all studied soils during reduction and reoxidation, yet the correlations are pH-dependent. This study provides a quantitative and size-resolved understanding of particle-bound As in paddy soils, highlighting the importance of nanometric Fe-OM-As interactions in paddy As geochemical cycling.

Abstract:Soil arsenic (As) contamination associated with the demolition of smelting plants has received increasing attention. Soil As can source from different industrial processes, and also participate in soil weathering, making its speciation rather complex. This study combined the usage of chemical sequential extraction and advanced spectroscopic techniques, e.g., time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), to investigate the mineralogical transformation of soil As at different processing sites from a typical copper smelting plant in China. Results showed that the stability of arsenic species decreased following the processes of storage, smelting, and flue gas treatment. Arsenic in the warehouse area was incorporated into pyrite (FeS2) as well as its secondary minerals such as jarosite (KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6). At the smelting area, a large proportion of As was adsorbed by iron oxides from smelting slags, while some As existed in stable forms like orpiment (As2S3). At the acid-making area, more than half of As was adsorbed on amorphous iron oxides, and some were adsorbed on the flue gas desulfurization gypsum. More importantly, over 86% of the As belonged to non-specifically and specifically adsorbed fractions was found to be bioaccessible, highlighting the gypsum-adsorbed As one of the most hazardous species in smelting plant soils. Our findings indicated the importance of iron oxides in As retention and suggested the potential health risk of gypsum-adsorbed As. Such detailed knowledge of As speciation and bioaccessibility is vital for the management and remediation of As-contaminated soils in smelting plants.

Abstract:Understanding the characteristic heavy metals and their migration-transformation behavior in mining areas is essential for the prevention and control of mining pollution. This study selected a gold mine in the Anqing-Guichi ore-cluster region in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt as the research area, the concentrations, and migration-transformation mechanisms of metalloid As and typical heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Ni) in gold mining wastes (mine tailings and sewage sludge) and the surrounding soil (farmland soil and soil a mining area) were investigated. The results showed that the concentration of As was high in both mining wastes and soils, and the geo-accumulation index values of As in soils ranging from 1.44–6.70, indicated that As pollution was severe in the soil. Besides, a close correlation between the concentration of As and the content of iron was observed by XRF analysis, in conjunction with SEM observations, most As-bearing phases are embedded in Fe, O, and Si compounds. According to EDS and XPS results, the Fe-O-As particle was suggested to be Fe-(oxy)hydroxides with absorbed or co-precipitated As. Furthermore, the arsenic phase observed in the soils were consistent with the weathering oxidation products in the tailings, demonstrating that the mineral particles in the tailings could migrate into soils via atmospheric transport, rainwater leaching, surface runoff, etc., and consequently result in heavy metal accumulation. The sequential chemical extraction result showed that the residual state of As in the soil exceeded 60%, and As posed no risk to low risk according to the Risk assessment code result. However, due to the high concentration and high mobility of arsenic, its environmental impact cannot be ignored even if its bio-accessibility in mined area soil is low.

Abstract:Urbanization involving the excavation and reuse of arsenic-bearing geological materials may pose human health risks. We investigated the distribution and sources of soil arsenic at a coastal reclamation site in the Pearl River Delta, China, and proposed risk management strategies. Analysis of 899 soil samples revealed an average of 58.97mg/kg arsenic, with a maximum of 1450mg/kg, mainly in fill material obtained from a local island. Integrative analysis combining reclamation history, regional geology, and bedrock mineralogy conclusively identified hydrothermally altered arsenic-bearing sulfide minerals within extensively fractured bedrock as the primary source of arsenic. Physical weathering and anthropogenic rock blasting produced discrete arsenic-rich particles that were directly transported into soils during land reclamation and accumulated to potential hazardous levels. Oral, dermal, and inhalation pathways were identified as primary exposures for future populations. Integrated engineering and institutional controls, coupled with long-term monitoring, were recommended to mitigate risks. The results highlight the importance of identifying specific geogenic and anthropogenic sources that contribute to heavy metal enrichment of soils in reclaimed areas where native bedrock naturally contains elevated level of metals, supporting evidence-based best practices for risk management and future land use.
Microbially mediated sulfur oxidation coupled with arsenate reduction within oligotrophic mining-impacted habitats

Abstract:Arsenate [As(V)] reduction is a major cause of arsenic (As) release from soils, which threatens more than 200 million people worldwide. While heterotrophic As(V) reduction has been investigated extensively, the mechanism of chemolithotrophic As(V) reduction is less studied. Since As is frequently found as a sulfidic mineral in the environment, microbial mediated sulfur oxidation coupled to As(V) reduction (SOAsR), a chemolithotrophic process, may be more favorable in sites impacted by oligotrophic mining (e.g. As-contaminated mine tailings). While SOAsR is thermodynamically favorable, knowledge regarding this biogeochemical process is still limited. The current study suggested that SOAsR was a more prevalent process than heterotrophic As(V) reduction in oligotrophic sites, such as mine tailings. The water-soluble reduced sulfur concentration was predicted to be one of the major geochemical parameters that had a substantial impact on SOAsR potentials. A combination of DNA stable isotope probing and metagenome binning revealed members of the genera Sulfuricella, Ramlibacter, and Sulfuritalea as sulfur oxidizing As(V)-reducing bacteria (SOAsRB) in mine tailings. Genome mining further expanded the list of potential SOAsRB to diverse phylogenetic lineages such as members associated with Burkholderiaceae and Rhodocyclaceae. Metagenome analysis using multiple tailing samples across southern China confirmed that the putative SOAsRB were the dominant As(V) reducers in these sites. Together, the current findings expand our knowledge regarding the chemolithotrophic As(V) reduction process, which may be harnessed to facilitate future remediation practices in mine tailings.
The effect of biogeochemical redox oscillations on arsenic release from legacy mine tailings

Abstract:Exposed and un-remediated metal(loid)-bearing mine tailings are susceptible to wind and water erosion that disperses toxic elements into the surrounding environment. Compost-assisted phytostabilization has been successfully applied to legacy tailings as an inexpensive, eco-friendly, and sustainable landscape rehabilitation that provides vegetative cover and subsurface scaffolding to inhibit offsite transport of contaminant laden particles. The possibility of augmented metal(loid) mobility from subsurface redox reactions driven by irrigation and organic amendments is known and arsenic (As) is of particular concern because of its high affinity for adsorption to reducible ferric (oxyhydr)oxide surface sites. However, the biogeochemical transformation of As in mine tailings during multiple redox oscillations has not yet been addressed. In the present study, a redox-stat reactor was used to control oscillations between 7 d oxic and 7 d anoxic half-cycles over a three-month period in mine tailings with and without amendment of compost-derived organic matter (OM) solution. Aqueous and solid phase analyses during and after redox oscillations by mass spectrometry and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that soluble OM addition stimulated pyrite oxidation, which resulted in accelerated acidification and increased aqueous sulfate activity. Soluble OM in the reactor solution significantly increased mobilization of As under anoxic half-cycles primarily through reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite. Microbially-mediated As reduction was also observed in compost treatments, which increased partitioning to the aqueous phase due to the lower affinity of As(III) for complexation on ferric surface sites, e.g. ferrihydrite. Oxic half-cycles showed As repartitioned to the solid phase concurrent with precipitation of ferrihydrite and jarosite. Multiple redox oscillations increased the crystallinity of Fe minerals in the Treatment reactors with compost solution due to the reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite and precipitation of jarosite. The release of As from tailings gradually decreased after repeated redox oscillations. The high sulfate, ferrous iron, and hydronium activity promoted the precipitation of jarosite, which sequestered arsenic. Our results indicated that redox oscillations under compost-assisted phytostabilization can promote As release that diminishes over time, which should inform remediation assessment and environmental risk assessment of mine site compost-assisted phytostabilization.
Effects of Fe-S-As Coupled Redox Processes on Arsenic Mobilization in Shallow Aquifers of Datong Basin, Northern China.

Abstract:High arsenic groundwater generally coexists with elevated Fe2+ concentrations (mg L-1 levels) under reducing conditions, but an explanation for the extremely high arsenic (up to similar to 2690) concentrations at very low Fe2+ (i.e., mu g L-1 levels) in groundwater of Datong Basin remains elusive. Field groundwater investigation and laboratory microcosm experiments were implemented in this study. The field groundwater was characterized by weakly alkaline (pH 7.69 to 8.34) and reducing conditions (Eh - 221.7 to -31.9 mV) and arsenic concentration averages at 697 mu g L-1. Acinetobacter (5.9-51.3%), Desulfosporosinus (4.6-30.2%), Brevundimonas (3.9-19%) and Pseudomonas (3.2-14.6%) were identified as the dominant genera in the bacterial communities. Bacterially mediated arsenate reduction, Fe(III) reduction, and sulfate reduction are processes occurring (or having previously occurred) in the groundwater. Results from incubation experiment (27 d) revealed that nitrate, arsenate, and Fe(III)/sulfate reduced sequentially with time under anoxic conditions, while Fe(III) and sulfate reduction processes had no obvious differences, occurring almost simultaneously. Moreover, low Fe2+ concentrations were attributed to initially high pH conditions, which relatively retarded Fe(III) reduction. In addition, arsenic behavior in relation to groundwater redox conditions, matrices, and solution chemistry were elaborated. Bacterial arsenate reduction process proceeded before Fe(III) and sulfate reduction in the incubation experiment, and the total arsenic concentration (dominated by arsenite) gradually increased from -7 to 115 mu g L-1 as arsenate was reduced. Accordingly, bacterially mediated reductive desorption of arsenate is identified as the main process controlling arsenic mobility, while Fe(Ill) reduction coupled with sulfate reduction are secondary processes that have also contributed to arsenic enrichment in the study site. Overall, this study provide important insights into the mechanism controlling arsenic mobility under weakly alkaline and reducing conditions, and furnishes that arsenate reduction by bacteria play a major role leading to high accumulation of desorbed arsenite in groundwater. Abstract:Arsenic in soils poses a high environmental risk. The understanding of arsenic geochemical speciation, mobility, and other potential factors in contaminated soils is crucial for appropriate remediation strategy development and environmental assessment. The objective of this study was to investigate the arsenic oxidation state and its form in each step of sequential extraction applied to different types of contaminated soils, and to analyze the impact of i sequential extraction forms of soil Fe and phosphate. Soil samples were collected from three agricultural regions: acid mine drainage (AMD)-impacted red soils ( n = 5, 61.1–248.6 mg As/kg) and As-contaminated groundwater-impacted soil including yellow soils ( n = 6, 23.2–32.1 mg As/kg) and chestnut soils ( n = 5, 9.0–13.3 mg As/kg). The results of sequential extraction revealed that As was primarily associated with Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. The highest proportion of amorphous Fe(III) oxyhydroxide-bound As was observed in the southern red soils, which was attributable to the coprecipitation/immobilization of high Fe and As concentration levels in AMD during irrigation. The amount of adsorbed As (mass fraction) increased linearly with increasing amounts of As and is related to the presence of both amorphous and crystalline Fe phases in the soils. This demonstrates the immobilization role of reactive Fe phases in controlling the potential mobility of As in contaminated soils impacted by As-contaminated groundwater and AMD. Soil phosphate, with mass concentrations 2–4 orders of magnitude higher than those of As, occupied most of the Fe(III) oxyhydroxide reactive sites. Phosphate-extractable As was 4.3–80.7 mg/kg, accounting for 18.3–76.0 % (median of 33.5 %) of total As, indicating the competitive effect of phosphate on the desorptive release of As. The AMD-impacted paddy soil exhibited much higher proportions of phosphate-extractable As and a predominance of As(III) in the water-soluble extract, revealing the high potential mobility and toxicity of As in flooded soil. The dominant occupation of Fe adsorption sites by soil phosphate likely contributes to low efficiency of soil Fe in immobilizing As. To reduce As mobility, it is imperative to develop future strategies for phosphates used as sustainable fertilizer to support crop culture.

Abstract:Biotransformation of arsenic (As) influences its speciation and mobility, obscuring mechanistic comprehension on spatiotemporal variation of As concentration in geogenic contaminated groundwater. In particular, unresolved processes underlying As redox disequilibrium in comparison to major redox couples discourage practical efforts to rehabilitate the As-contaminated groundwater. Here, quantitative metagenomic sequencing and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) were jointly applied to reveal the links between vertical distribution of As metabolic gene assemblages and that of free energy density of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in As-contaminated groundwater of Datong Basin. Observed small excess of Gibbs free energy available by DOM relative to that required for As(V)-to-As(III) reduction exerts thermodynamic constraint on metabolism-mediated redox transformation of As. Accordingly, the vertical distribution of dissolved As(V)/As(III) ratio correlated significantly with that of ars+acr3 and arr encoding As(V) reduction and aio encoding As(III) oxidation in the moderately/strongly reducing groundwater. Further gene-informed biogeochemical modeling suggests that a net effect of these kinetics-restricted bidirectional metabolic pathways leads to co-preservation of As(V) and As(III) even at relatively high rates of ars+acr3 encoded As(V) reduction. This study therefore provides new insights into bioenergetic constraints on As hydrobiogeochemical behavior, with implications for other redox-sensitive contaminants in the groundwater systems.

Abstract:The V-Ti-Fe mine tailings waste releases high concentrations of aquatic arsenic (As) ions to downstream ecosystems. The hydrogeochemical As simulation facilitates the prediction of toxicity (or redox state) and devising control strategies to mitigate the negative impacts. Therefore, this study utilizes the Wanniangou tailings pond (a V-Ti-Fe mine tailings reservoir) in the Panxi region, Sichuan province, China, as a case study to elucidate the As hydrogeochemical behaviour under varying pH and redox potential (Eh) conditions. Our study reveals that (1) the water-oxygen exchange and Mn are important to regulating the redox conditions in the filtrates. The Eh determines the valence states of As, which vary from reduced states to oxidized states during the runoff from the tailings pond to downstream (Rehe River). The flow of wastewater in Rehe River minimizes both the As toxicity and concentration, eventually improving water safety. (2) In a reducing environment, hematite exhibits a limited capacity for As(III) adsorption. In the case of oxidation conditions, goethite mainly adsorbed As(V), with an elevated adsorption capacity. Meanwhile, Fe-minerals remain relatively stable under varying redox and weakly acidic conditions. Consequently, targeted engineering interventions can achieve two crucial outcomes: (1) Minimize the acidity of the mine environment to retard the release of heavy metals from the tailings waste. (2) Prolonging the residence time of wastewater in Rehe River to promote the transition from a reducing state to an oxidizing state, thereby synergistically mitigating As toxicity.
Arsenic behavior across soil-water interfaces in paddy soils: Coupling, decoupling and speciation

Abstract:The sharp redox gradient at soil-water interfaces (SWI) plays a key role in controlling arsenic (As) translocation and transformation in paddy soils. When Eh drops, As is released to porewater from solid iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) minerals and reduced to arsenite. However, the coupling or decoupling processes operating within the redox gradient at the SWI in flooded paddy soils remain poorly constrained due to the lack of direct evidence. In this paper, we reported the mm-scale mapping of Fe, As and other associated elements across the redox gradient in the SWI of five different paddy soils. The results showed a strong positive linear relationship between dissolved Fe, Mn, As, and phosphorus (P) in 4 out of the 5 paddy soils, indicating the general coupling of these elements. However, decoupling of Fe, Mn and As was observed in one of the paddy soils. In this soil, distinct releasing profiles of Mn, As and Fe were observed, and the releasing order followed the redox ladder. Further investigation of As species showed the ratio of arsenite to total As dropped from 100% to 75.5% and then kept stable along depth of the soil profile, which indicates a dynamic equilibrium between arsenite oxidization and arsenate reduction. This study provides direct evidence of multi-elements' interaction along redox gradient of SWI in paddy soils.

Abstract:Arsenic (As) from mine wastewater is a significant source for acidic paddy soil pollution, and its mobility can be influenced by alternating redox conditions. However, mechanistic and quantitative insights into the biogeochemical cycles of exogenous As in paddy soil are still lacking. Herein, the variations of As species in paddy soil spiking with As(III) or As(V) were investigated in the process of 40 d of flooding followed 20 d of drainage. During flooding process, available As was immobilized in paddy soil spiking As(III) and the immobilized As was activated in paddy soil spiking As(V) owing to deprotonation. The contributions of Fe oxyhydroxides and humic substances (HS) to As immobilization in paddy soil spiking As(III) were 80.16% and 18.64%, respectively. Whereas the contributions of Fe oxyhydroxides and HS to As activation in paddy soil spiking As(V) were 47.9% and 52.1%, respectively. After entering drainage, available As was mainly immobilized by Fe oxyhydroxides and HS and adsorbed As(III) was oxidized. The contribution of Fe oxyhydroxides to As fixation in paddy soil spiking As(III) and As(V) was 88.82% and 90.26%, respectively, and of HS to As fixation in paddy soil spiking As(III) and As(V) was 11.12% and 8.95%, respectively. Based on the model fitting results, the activation of Fe oxyhydroxides and HS bound As followed with available As(V) reduction were key processes during flooding. This may be because the dispersion of soil particles and release of soil colloids activated the adsorbed As. Immobilization of available As(III) by amorphous Fe oxyhydroxides followed with adsorbed As(III) oxidation were key processes during drainage. This may be ascribe to the occurrence of coprecipitation and As(III) oxidation mediated by reactive oxygen species from Fe(II) oxidation. The results are beneficial for a deeper understanding of As species transformation at the interface of paddy soil-water as well as an estimation pathway for the impacts of key biogeochemical cycles on exogenous As species under a redox-alternating condition.

Abstract:The formation of acid mine drainage (AMD) and release of toxic contaminants, such as arsenic (As), is a serious environmental problem encountered worldwide. In this study, we investigate the crucial role the Klip River wetland system plays in attenuating As arising from gold mining activities within the Witwatersrand Basin in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mining operations in the region commenced over 130 years ago and have been associated with the widespread pollution of water resources by AMD. We investigated As concentrations, bioavailability and speciation in a peat core from the Klip River wetland as well as in samples from the main tributaries and tailing storage facilities (TSFs) in the upper catchment. Total As concentrations in tributary and TSFs samples ranged between 10.1-89.9 mgkg-1 and 77.4-106 mg kg-1, respectively, with concentrations in the wetland varying between 1.91-73.8 mg kg-1. In general, As bioavailability was low in both catchment (19%) and wetland (4%) samples, with elemental associations suggesting the majority is bound in an immobile form to organic matter and sulfide. As(v) was the predominant species detected in all samples (0.0901-16.6 mg kg-1), with As(m), MMA and DMA present in lower concentrations. Strong correlations between As and S suggest that speciation and methylation are dependent on both chemical and microbial activity. The study highlights the vital role that wetlands can play in sequestering As in the environment.

Arsenic and iron speciation and mobilization during phytostabilization of pyritic mine tailings

Abstract:Particulate and dissolved metal(loid) release from mine tailings is of concern in (semi-) arid environments where tailings can remain barren of vegetation for decades and, therefore, become highly susceptible to dispersion by wind and water. Erosive weathering of metalliferous tailings can lead to arsenic contamination of adjacent ecosystems and increased risk to public health. Management via phytostabilization with the establishment of a vegetative cap using organic amendments to enhance plant growth has been employed to reduce both physical erosion and leaching. However, prior research suggests that addition of organic matter into the oxic weathering zone of sulfide tailings has the potential to promote the mobilization of arsenate. Therefore, the objective of the current work was to assess the impacts of phytostabilization on the molecular-scale mechanisms controlling arsenic speciation and lability. These impacts, which remain poorly understood, limit our ability to mitigate environmental and human health risks. Here we report on subsurface biogeochemical transformations of arsenic and iron from a three-year phytostabilization field study conducted at a Superfund site in Arizona, USA. Legacy pyritic tailings at this site contain up to 3 g kg-1 arsenic originating from arsenopyrite that has undergone oxidation to form arsenate-ferrihydrite complexes in the top 1 m. Tailings were amended in the top 20 cm with 100, 150, or 200 g kg-1 (300-600 T ha-1) of composted organic matter and seeded with native halotolerant plant species. Treatments and an unamended control received irrigation of 360 ± 30 mm y-1 in addition to 250 ± 160 mm y-1 of precipitation. Cores to 1 m depth were collected annually for three years and sectioned into 20 cm increments for analysis by synchrotron iron and arsenic X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) coupled with quantitative wet chemical and mass balance methods. Results revealed that > 80% of arsenic exists in ammonium oxalate-extractable and non-extractable phases, including dominantly ferrihydrite and jarosite. Arsenic release during arsenopyrite oxidation resulted in both downward translocation and As(V) attenuation by stable Fe(III)(oxyhydr)oxide and Fe(III) (hydroxy)sulfate minerals over time, highlighting the need for sampling at multiple depths and time points for accurate interpretation of arsenic speciation, lability, and translocation in weathering profiles. Less than 1% of total arsenic was highly-labile, i.e. water-extractable, from all treatments, depths, and years, and more than 99% of arsenate released by arsenopyrite weathering was attenuated by association with secondary minerals. Although downward translocation of both arsenic and iron was detected during phytostabilization by temporal enrichment analysis, a similar trend was measured for the uncomposted control, indicating that organic amendment associated with phytostabilization practices did not significantly increase arsenic mobilization over non-amended controls.

Abstract:The geochemical behavior and speciation of arsenic (As) in paddy soils is strongly controlled by soil redox conditions and the sequestration by soil iron oxyhydroxides. Hence, the effects of iron oxide reductive dissolution on the adsorption, transformation and precipitation of As(III) and As(V) in soils were investigated using batch experiments and synchrotron based techniques to gain a deeper understanding at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. The results of batch sorption experiments revealed that the sorption capacity of As(V) on anoxic soil was much higher than that on control soil. Synchrotron based X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) mapping studies indicated that As was heterogeneously distributed and was mainly associated with iron in the soil. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure (μ-XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that the primary speciation of As in the soil is As(V). These results further suggested that, when As(V) was introduced into the anoxic soil, the rapid coprecipitation of As(V) with ferric/ferrous ion prevented its reduction to As(III), and was the main mechanism controlling the immobilization of As. This research could improve the current understanding of soil As chemistry in paddy and wetland soils.

Abstract:Low birth weight and length for gestational age are associated with a high risk of short stature and metabolic syndrome in adulthood. The mechanisms that link prenatal growth to adult stature and metabolic syndrome have not yet been entirely clarified. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between standardized anthropometric measures at birth and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, IGF-II, insulin, adiponectin, and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) cord blood levels in the general population. One hundred fifty-eight random newborn subjects (77F, 81M) from Genoa, Italy, were analyzed. Anthropometric parameters were measured and standardized according to standard Italian tables. Insulin values were treated as categorical, since in several cases the results fell below detection cut-off. Mean birth weight was 3,214.23∓488.99 gr and mean length was 49.82∓2.17 cm. Females had higher mean IGF-I (p=0.04), and were more likely to have insulin values either <2 μU/ml or >4.5μU/ml (p= 0.04) compared to males. Weight and length SD scores (SDS) were higher in subjects with elevated insulin levels (p=0.002). A moderate correlation was found between weight and IGF-II (r=0.354). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that standardized birth weight was associated with IGFII and insulin values. Our data highlight the importance of IGF-II in fetal growth and suggest that gender differences should be taken into consideration when evaluating prenatal growth.
Impact of sulfate reduction on the scale of arsenic contamination in groundwater of the Mekong, Bengal and Red River deltas

Abstract:Arsenic-enriched groundwater has been a pressing human health issue for more than a decade, with tens of millions of people worldwide being at risk of chronic As poisoning through the consumption of As-burdened groundwater. To elucidate the importance of dissolved S on the scale of As concentrations, the composition of groundwater samples from 926 locations spanning over the floodplains of three severely arsenic affected regions in Asia (Bengal-, Mekong-, Red River deltas), were assessed. A binary mixing model based on Cl− or B as conservative tracers implies that two types of water may be regarded as end-members with respect to groundwater composition in these deltas, namely surface derived water (approximated by river water) and saline water identical to residual sea water. Six redox zones were distinguished by comparing the model-calculated SO42- concentrations with the measured values. Only one zone (denoted methanogenic) had very high average As concentrations and they were significantly higher than in the other zones – for all three regions, regardless of applying Cl− or B as a tracer in the model. Average As concentrations±standard error in the methanogenic zone were 182±23μgL−1 (n=50%), 41±6μgL−1 (n=43%), and 61±20μgL−1 (n=24%) in the Mekong, Red River and Bengal delta, respectively. Arsenic levels were significantly lower in the SO4-reducing and the Fe-reducing zones, where averages were 23±7μgL−1 (n=27%, zone I), 14±3μgL−1 (n=48%, zone S) and 26±9μgL−1 (n=64%, zone S). These results suggest that a sufficient supply of SO42- inhibits the release of As to groundwater and that SO42- reduction may be as important as Fe reduction in controlling the enrichment of As in groundwater.

Abstract:The mobilization of arsenic (As) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is crucial for determining the accumulation of dissolved As to potentially toxic levels. However, the specific impacts of redox processes involving iron (Fe) and sulfur (S), as well as microbial activities occurring in sediments, on As mobilization at the marine SWI remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary during three different seasons with different benthic redox conditions. The preferential reduction of arsenate (As(V)) to arsenite (As(III)) and subsequent re-adsorption onto newly formed crystalline Fe oxides restricted As release in the As(V) reduction layer. Enhanced Fe(III) reduction in the Fe(III) reduction layer contributed to As release, while the presence of low As-high Fe-high SO42- levels resulted in As removal through adsorption onto pyrite in the sulfate reduction layer. Analysis of functional genes indicated that As(V) in sediments was released into porewater through the reductive dissolution of As(V)-bearing Fe(III) oxides by Geobacter species, followed by microbial reduction of the liberated As(V) to As(III) by microbes carrying the arrA gene. The dominant pathway governing As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary shifted from microbial reduction control during the hypoxic summer to Fe redox control during the aerobic autumn and winter. These findings provide valuable insights into the complex mechanisms driving As mobilization and highlight the importance of considering seasonal variations in understanding As dynamics at the marine SWI.
