Abstract:Rapid urbanization and industrialization have aggravated heavy metal contamination in river sediments of the riverine ecosystem in developing countries like Bangladesh owing to their toxicity and persistence. Sediments are dynamic components and useful indicators to understand the level of contamination and their associated ecological risks in the aquatic environment. The study was conducted to investigate the heavy metal contamination in sediments for assessing the ecological risks of an urban river of Bangladesh using principal component analysis (PCA), Pearson's correlation matrix, geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), contamination degree (CD), pollution load index (PLI), enrichment factors (EF), and potential ecological risk factor (RI). The ranges of Zn, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Cd in sediments were 42.22–99.55, 11.12–57.83, 7.98–53.31, 6.76–22.41, and 0.38–0.87 mg/kg, respectively. In the present study, heavy metal concentration in sediments followed the descending order of Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd, while the concentrations of Cu, Cr, and Cd were higher and the concentrations of Pb and Zn were lower than the toxicity reference value (TRV). Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) demonstrated that most of the sediment samples were unpolluted to moderately polluted. The PLI ranged from 0.334 to 1.209 that stated that sediments were moderately polluted by studied metals. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that heavy metal contamination was influenced by multiple pollution sources. The extent of heavy metal pollution in the Shitalakhya River implies that the condition is much frightening to both the aquatic biota and inhabitants in the vicinity of the river.

Abstract:The speed of increasing threats to the riverine water resources makes it more critical to protect the health of Old Brahmaputra River ecosystems. The current study was done to investigate the concentrations, distributions, sources, and ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment from the Old Brahmaputra River, Bangladesh. Samples were collected from seven sites and analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results showed that mean concentrations (mg/kg) of heavy metals were in the order of nickel (Ni) (44.69) ˃ chromium (Cr) (30.16) ˃ lead (Pb) (19.31) ˃ copper (Cu) (17.84) ˃ cadmium (Cd) (3.94) ˃ arsenic (As) (2.73). The contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), enrichment factor (EF), and geo-accumulation index ( I geo ) indicated low to moderate contamination. Toxic unit analysis revealed that the studied metals from all stations posed low risk. The sediment of the study river was uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, posing a minimal ecological risk. Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb originated from anthropogenic sources rather than geogenic sources, and caused the severity of contamination. In this regard, pollutant-based intensive monitoring of heavy metals and holistic ecological risk assessments are required to maintain a sound and healthy aquatic environment in the river.

Abstract:Contamination of heavy metals in sediment is regarded as a global crisis with a large share in developing countries like Bangladesh. Four heavy metals such as arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in sediments and water were investigated from Karnaphuli River in Bangladesh. The decreasing trend of metals were observed in water as Cr>As>Pb>Cd and in sediment Cr>Pb>As>Cd. The ranges of heavy metals in water were 13.31–53.87, 46.09–112.43, 2.54–18.34 and 5.29–27.45μg/L and in sediments were 11.56–35.48, 37.23–160.32, 0.63–3.56 and 21.98–73.42mg/kg for As, Cr, Cd and Pb. The level of studied metals in water samples exceeded the safe limits of drinking water, indicated that water from this river is not safe for drinking and/or cooking. Contamination factor (CF) confirmed that the sediment samples were moderate to high contamination by As, Cd and Pb. The pollution load index (PLI) values were above one (>1) indicates advanced decline of the sediment quality. This study recommended that continuous monitoring of As, Cd and Pb in water; sediment and other aquatic biota of Karnaphuli River should be directed to assess the risk of these vital metals to safe the ecology in the vicinity of this river.

Abstract:The Huai River is one of the major drinking water resources in Bengbu City of China’s eastern Anhui Province. The study focused on extracting information for spatial distributions of heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) based on the contents of pollutants in 20 surface sediments. Geoaccumulation index and Hakanson potential ecological index were used to calculate the ecological risk of sediment environment in this paper. The Igeo results indicated that the sediments were moderately contaminated by Hg and Pb. The potential ecological risk sequence of the metals was Hg > Cd > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn > As. Among the metal(loid)s, Hg was the main source of pollution that contributed ∼76% towards the potential ecological risk, followed by Cd. Finally, multivariate statistical analysis methods were conducted to identify the potential causes of pollution and provide basis for environment treatment in Bengbu Reach. The results depicted that Pb may be mainly derived from the traffic emission and manufacturing industry, while Hg may be originated from agricultural emissions.

Abstract:This groundbreaking study conducted a meticulous examination of heavy metal concentrations, including Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, and As, in water samples from five distinct coastal areas in Bangladesh. Employing advanced techniques such as flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and hydride generation AAS, the researchers provided a detailed analysis of metal distribution and pollution levels. The quantification results illuminated Pb as the metal with the highest average concentration, followed by Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, and As in the water samples. The Halda River area stood out with an alarming Pb load, exceeding safe limits by a staggering 58 times, accompanied by elevated levels of As. Similarly, the Naf River, located in the southernmost part of Bangladesh near Saint Martin, exhibited the highest concentrations of Cd and Ni. The study incorporated spatial distribution maps, revealing a consistent pattern of heavy metal concentration near river inlets. To gauge water pollution, the researchers utilized indices such as the water quality index (WQI), metal quality index (MQI), and metal pollution index (MPI). Saint Martin emerged as the most polluted area, particularly concerning drinking water and irrigation, according to WQI. MQI results pinpointed Galachipa River (Kuakata) and Halda River as highly polluted in terms of drinking water. Further analysis using a combined approach involving self-organizing maps (SOM), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and geographical information systems (GIS) identified anthropogenic activities as the primary sources of heavy metal pollution. PMF revealed the percentage contributions of industrial, agricultural, and natural sources for each metal. In essence, this study serves as a clarion call for urgent and effective water management strategies in Bangladesh's coastal regions. The findings underscore the critical need to mitigate heavy metal pollution arising predominantly from anthropogenic activities, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding human health and the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems in the region.

Abstract:The concentration and distribution of selected eight heavy metals in five stations from lower stretches of the Hooghly estuary were studied to ascertain the level of anthropogenic contaminant loading resulting from the development of the region. Atomic absorption spectroscopy showed that the mean concentration of Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cr, Cd and As (mg kg-1, dry weight,) ranged from 29950.70 – 39567.94, 61.45 – 98.83, 40.65 – 54.46, 25.44 – 42.78, 36.93 – 48.56, 29.07 – 46.35, BDL – 3.48 and 1.18 – 6.44 respectively. Pollution load index (PLI) and Index of geoaccumulation (Igeo) revealed overall low values but the enrichment factors (EFs) for Cd was typically high for three of the stations. Calculations based on Effect Range Low (ERL) and Threshold Effect Level (TEL) showed that the mean concentration of Cu, Ni and Cd and to some extent Pb exceeded these levels, indicating that there is chance of ecotoxicological effects on benthic organisms dwelling in this region. Inter-elemental relationship and cluster analysis revealed identical behavior of the elements during transport and distribution. The study will help to further the cause of environmental protection of this sensitive biorealm in conjunction with the need for development of the region.

Abstract:Two patients who had angiographically proven coronary artery aneurysms are presented. The clinical pictures of these patients were similar to that of patients with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Both had severe angina pectoris, and the second patient (case 2) had had myocardial infarction. Their coronary artery aneurysms were single, fusiform (case 1) and saccular (case 2) in shape and not associated with extensive coronary atherosclerosis. They were treated medically and did well.

Abstract:Average concentration of few heavy metals exceeded permissible level, posing significant risk to river ecosystem and sediment. Calculated pollution indices also indicated potential ecological risk to water environment and bottom sediment. Human welfare and biodiversity are at risk due to the deterioration of water and sediment quality. Particularly, in last few decades, global water and sediment quality degraded due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization. This study aimed to determine the concentration of nine heavy metals and metalloid (Pb, Cr, Cd, Hg, As, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and assess the ecological risks using different pollution indices (e.g., heavy metal pollution index [HPI], Nemerow pollution index [NI], geo‐accumulation index [Igeo], contamination factor [CF], degree of contamination [CD] and pollution load index [PLI], ecological risk index [ERI]) in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, an industrially affected urban river of Bangladesh. For the first time, 20 water and sediment samples were collected across a wider geographical area of the Shitalakshya River during both monsoon and dry seasons and analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrometer. Average concentrations of heavy metals and metalloid in water were within the Bangladesh standard except for Cr (51.69 ppb) and Mn (228.20 ppb) during monsoon season, portraying potential ecological and human health risks. Besides, average concentration of Mn (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), Ni (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), and Cu (45.34 and 36.09 ppb) in sediment during both seasons were above international standard, implying risk to aquatic sediment biota. The average HPI values indicated moderate to high contamination, whereas the NI values implied polluted water in monsoon season with severe pollution in port area of the river. Similarly, Igeo, CF, CD, and PLI elucidated different levels of contamination in the sediment, particularly during dry season. The ERI values also referred moderate ecological risk in the sediment during dry season. Overall, our findings highlight the alarming level of heavy metal pollution in the Shitalakshya River, necessitating immediate action to protect the aquatic environment, sediment biota, and human health. Practitioner points This study determined the concentration of heavy metals and metalloid in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, Bangladesh. The study revealed that the average concentration of Cr and Mn in water exceeded national standard, whereas Mn, Ni, and Cu in sediment exceeded international limit. Potential ecological risk of heavy metals was also assessed using different pollution indices. Calculated pollution indices indicated different degree of pollution, implying critical ecological condition due to heavy metal pollution in aquatic environment and sediment biota.

Abstract:Accumulation of heavy metals in the coastal ecosystem has become a prodigious problem in any developing countries like Bangladesh. The impact of human activities on some physicochemical parameters and heavy metals was studied in surface water of the Bengal coast, Bangladesh. For ease of description, the fourteen study stations were categorized into four regions of the coastal sites of Bangladesh to determine physicochemical parameters and nine heavy metals like chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in water samples. The mean concentrations for water physico-chemistry are temperature (27.7±1.2 °C), pH (7.4±0.27), electrical conductivity (EC) (41.8±6.6 mS/cm), dissolved oxygen (DO) (6.7±0.69 mg/L), turbidity (58.5±12.0 NTU), fluoride (1.4±1.2 mg/L), chloride (126±66.3 mg/L), sulfate (120±90.5 mg/L), nitrate (4.7±2.5 mg/L), and phosphate (4.7±2.5 mg/L). While the mean concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Fe, Mn, and Zn were 150±58.3, 40.2±10.1, 186±114, 77.3±31.3, 32.7±20.7, 66.7±32.5, 871±268, 178±41.4, and 222±100 μg/L, respectively. As a whole, average concentration of studied metals in surface water followed the decreasing order of Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Cr > Pb > As > Ni > Cd. Heavy metals in water samples were much higher than the water quality guidelines for freshwater quality criteria for protection of aquatic life and drinking, indicated that the water of the study areas may create health hazard. The outcomes of the contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), Nemerow’s pollution index (NPI), degree of contamination (Cd), and modified degree of contamination (mCd) varied spatially and most of the water samples were moderately to heavily polluted.

Abstract:For the first time, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model to quantify the source contributions to heavy metal pollution of sediment was employed at national basin‐scale in the up‐mid‐downstream rivers (Teesta and Kortoya‐Shitalakkah and Meghna‐ Rupsha and Pasur) of Bangladesh. The metal contamination status, co‐occurrence, and ecotoxicological risk were also investigated. Sediment samples were collected from 30 sites at the depth range of 0–20 cm for analyzing nine metals using Inductively Coupled Plasma‐Mass Spectrometry (ICP‐MS). The mean concentrations of metals are varied for up‐lower mid‐downstream river systems. Results showed that Cr exhibited a strong significant co‐occurrence network with other metals (e.g., Mn, Fe, Ni). The Monte‐Carlo simulation results of the geo‐accumulation (Igeo) (63.3%), and risk indices (RI) (48.5%) depicted that Cd is the main contributor to sediments pollution. However, the cumulative probabilities of sediments being polluted by metals exhibits `moderate to heavily polluted` (Igeo: 46.6%; RI:16.7 %). Toxicity unit results revealed Zn and Cd are the key toxic contributors to sediments. The PMF model predicted metal concentrations and identified four potential sources. The agricultural source (Factor 1) mostly contributed to Cu (78.9%) and As (62.8%), while Ni (96.9%) and Mn (83.5%) exhibited industrial point sources (Factor 2) with two hotspots in northwestern and southwestern regions. Whereas, Cd (93.5%) showed anthropogenic point sources (Factor 3), and Fe (64.3%), and Cr (53.5%) depicted a mixed source (Factor 4). Spatially, similar patterns between PMF apportioning factors and predicted metal sources were identified, exhibiting the efficiency of the model for river systems analysis. Abstract:This study investigates the bioaccumulation of heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr) in water and mollusks across the Karnafully River estuaryof Bangladesh. Samples were collected from six different sites encompassing diverse ecological conditions over three seasons: monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter. Six mollusk species were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry to quantify metal concentrations in both tissues and shells. These species are Neritina violocea, Neritina sulculosa, Telescopium telescopium, Cerithida ecingulata, Corbicula fluminea, and Bellamya bengalesis . The Chaktai canal site had the highest concentration of Cu (13.99±0.92 mg/kg) from the mussel species B. Bengalesis during monsoon season, which was higher than the tolerable limit for human. The the lowest concentration of Cu (1.13±0.76 mg/kg) from the composite mussel species N. sulculosa were fround from the 15 No. Jetty site in winter. The highest concentration of Cr was found at the Marine Academy site (0.54±0.24 mg/kg) during the post-monsoon period from the mussel species N. violocea , while the lowest concentration was found near the Karnafully Bridge (0.05±0.02 mg/kg) during the monsoon from the mussel species Cerithidea cingulata . The highest concentration of Cd was observed in the Chaktai canal site (0.77±0.04 mg/kg) during the winter from the B. bengalesis, and the lowest concentration was recorded in the Karnafully Bridge (0.33±0.06 mg/kg) site during the winter season from the Cerithidae cingulata species. The highest amount of Pb was found in Chaktai canal site (0.32±0.06 mg/kg) during the monsoon season in B . bengalesis fuana. The lowest amount was found in Karnafully Bridge (0.09±0.02 mg/kg) in the Cerithidae cingulate species at the same time. The results suggested that the possibility of the occurrence of acute toxicities of Cu, Cr, Cd and Pb was unlikely except for the mussel of T. telescopium in the Marine Academy that indicates heavy metals presence at the Marine Academy site. The study revealed that the average concentrations of the heavy metals were in the order of Cu>Cd>Cr>Pb in the monsoon, postmonsoon, and winter seasons. The principal Component Analysis (PCA) highlighted distinct seasonal patterns in metal accumulation, underscoring the need for seasonal-specific monitoring and management strategies in estuarine ecosystems.

Abstract:Bangladesh is currently experiencing significant infrastructural development in road networking system through the construction or reconstruction of multiple roads and highways. Consequently, there is a rise in traffic intensity on roads and highways, along with a significant contamination of adjacent agricultural soils with heavy metals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ecological risk, health risk and the abundance of seven heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Pb, Cd, Cr, As, and Ni) in three distance gradients (0, 300, and 500 m) of agricultural soil along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The concentration of heavy metals was measured with an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) on a total of 36 soil samples that were taken from 12 different sampling sites. Based on the findings, Cd had a high contamination factor for all distance gradients, whereas Cr had a moderate contamination factor in 67% of the study areas. According to the Pollution Load Index (PLI), Cd, Cr, and Pb were the predominant pollutants. Principal component analysis (PCA) result shows these metals mainly came from anthropogenic sources. The considerable positive correlations between Cu-Pb, Cu-Cd, Pb-Cd, and Cr-Ni all pointed to shared anthropogenic origins. As per Potential Ecological Risk Assessment (PERI) analysis, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni each contribute significantly and pose a moderate threat. The Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values for all pathways of exposure to Pb and Cr in soils were more than 1, which would pose a significant risk to human health in the following order: THQadult female > THQadult male > THQchildren. This study will help to evaluate the human health risk and develop a better understanding of the heavy metal abundance scenario in the agricultural fields adjacent to this highway.

Abstract:This research examines the contamination levels in the Pashur River in Bangladesh stemming from trace metal discharge originating from the Mongla seaport and various industrial outlets. It delves into both ecological risks and potential health hazards for humans consuming fish carrying accumulated trace metals. The research employed atomic absorption spectrometry to measure the concentrations of chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in surface water, sediment, and fish samples. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risks were calculated to determine the human health risk caused by the consumption of these targeted fish species. An R I value of 42.89 indicates that the collective presence of trace metals in sediment poses significant ecological risks to the study area. Although the majority of trace metals present in sediment are categorized under class 1 (ranging from unpolluted to moderately polluted) based on the I geo values, Cd is classified under class 2, signifying a moderate level of pollution. Significantly, THQ values surpass the threshold of 1 for Cr and As, indicating potential health risks associated with the consumption of specific fish species. Among the trace metals analyzed, Ni demonstrates the highest cancer risk (CR) value, at 5.78 × 10 3 , indicating a notable cancer risk associated with the consumption of targeted fish. Recommendations include the strict enforcement of waste disposal policies to mitigate anthropogenic discharge and safeguard the river from further pollution.

Abstract:Current state of contamination and subsequent risk of contaminated sediment of a tidal river of Bangladesh was evaluated in the present study. Sediment samples were collected from five locations in the tributary of Bakkhali River estuary during summer (April) and winter (December) season, 2020. Collected samples were processed using standard protocol and the content of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) and metalloid (As), were analyzed by the Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Sediment contamination was evaluated by pollution load index (PLI), contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (Cd), potential ecological risk index (PERI), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk (CR) due to the dermal contact of the sediment. Multivariate statistical analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were also applied to find out the possible sources of the contaminant in the sediment. Results showed the average concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu and Zn was 9.74 ± 3.57, 2.00 ± 0.85, 48.75 ± 8.92, 29.78 ± 8.39, 5.44 ± 2.03 and 56.94 ± 8.57 mg/kg, respectively. Concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn were within the recommended level whereas the concentration of As, Cd and Cr were suppressed the recommended level of WHO and FAO/WHO standards. PLI, CF and Cd revealed considerably low degree of contamination of the sediment. Geo-accumulation index indicated uncontaminated to moderately contaminated condition of the sediment. Although the values of enrichment factor revealed no potential enrichment for most of the metals, Cd showed a minor enrichment during the winter season. Based on the ecological risk assessment, the sediment from all of the sample locations was found to be of moderate to low risk. PCA and CA analysis revealed the origin of contaminants mainly from anthropogenic sources. Although different metals showed non-carcinogenic risk to the inhabitants, cancer risk values for dermal contact (CRderm) were much lower than 10-6 indicating no cancer risk for adult and child. However, the findings also revealed that children were more susceptible to CRderm compared to adults. The present study concluded that long term dermal contact of the sediment of Bakkhali River estuary will be contagious to the people. Therefore, regular monitoring of the estuarine environment is necessary so that contamination does not get worse.

Abstract:Trace element pollution from anthropogenic sources is increasingly widespread. This pollution in terrestrial environments threatens agricultural crop production, while in aquatic environments, it threatens fish cultivation. The contamination of these crucial food sources raises significant concerns regarding food safety, security, and its potential adverse effects on human health. Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal pollution due to their proximity to industrial and urban centres, as well as their susceptibility to contamination from marine sources. In attempting to identify the sources of heavy metals (As, Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and measure their contributions, we collected soil samples from thirty sites along the three coastal districts (Patuakhali, Barguna, and Bhola) in Bangladesh. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy, heavy metal concentrations in soil samples were measured and three receptor models (PMF, PCA-MLR, and UNMIX) were applied to detect their sources. Pairwise correlation analysis of metal concentrations in 30 sites across 3 coastal districts showed all possible patterns, including both significant and insignificant positive and negative relationships between different metals, except for As and Hg which did not display any significant relationships with other metals. The concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn exceed the US-EPA sediment quality standard. The applied PCA-MLR, PMF, and UNMIX models identified several sources of heavy metal contamination, including (i) mixed anthropogenic and natural activities: contribution of 59%, 37%, and 43%, and (ii) vehicle emissions: contribution of 23%, 26% and 29%. The recognized metal sources should be prioritised to avoid the discharge of poisonous pollutants from anthropogenic factors and any possible future exposure. This study's findings have implications for ongoing monitoring and management of heavy metal contamination in coastal environments to mitigate potential health and ecological impacts and can inform policy development and management strategies.

Abstract:Abstract Heavy-metal pollution of surface water, sediment and fish have been seen as a major global problem, with a significant proportion of developing countries like Bangladesh. This study assessed the intensity of alarming six toxic substances (Cr, Zn, Fe, Cu, Pb and Ni) throughout the River water, sediments as well as soft tissues of three widely consumed fishes ( Heteropneustes fossilis, Channa punctatus and Channa striata ) obtained from two urban streams of the Buriganga and Turag in the Dhaka metropolitan. For evaluating the comparative seasonal variation of heavy-metal concentration, water and sediment samples were collected from five selected sites for two different seasons (viz. 10 from winter seasons and 10 from summer seasons). Finally, a total of 20 water samples, 20 sediment and 12 fish samples were investigated by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer (GFAAS) corrected with the Zeeman effect background correction system. The hierarchy of mean concentration of selected heavy metals in Buriganga water is found to be Fe > Cr > Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb in the winter season whereas during the summer season the order is Fe > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb. For the River Turag, the order is Fe > Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb and Fe > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cr > Pb during winter and summer season, respectively. The level of metals studied surpassed the acceptable level of drinkable water, implying the ineptitude of drinking and cooking water from these Rivers. However, this hierarchy of heavy metals for sediments of Buriganga River changed to Fe > Cr > Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb for the winter season and Fe > Cr > Ni > Cu > Zn > Pb for the summer season. Whereas, for the Turag River, the decreasing trend of metal concentration found in sediment was Fe > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb for both seasons. For probable human health hazard implications, contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) were studied. The CF values revealed the low-to-moderate pollution of sediment. The PLI value above one shows the degradation of the consistency of the sediments. Fe, Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn and Cu concentrations in fish species were found to be 19.66–45.1, 0.07–12.18, 1.2–10.18, 20.18–187.07, 11.08–68.25, 2.07–10.4 mg/kg, respectively. The metals studied differed considerably among organisms and seasons. Bioconcentration factor (BCF), the daily average consumption of metal (EDI), as well as target threat quotients (THQs) for specific metal indicated that Cr and Pb are harmful in fish muscles and possible risks remain for fish consumers. The obtained concentrations of some metals are higher than the WHO/FAO’s permissible limit, suggesting that the water and fish found in these Rivers are like to be harmful to the human being. This study shows that attention should be given to the risk assessment for heavy metals in these Rivers.

Abstract:This study focuses on heavy metals distribution and their ecological risk in river water, bed sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) along the Ganga River basin. Overall abundance of the metals followed the sequence, Fe > Al > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cd > Cr > Zn > Co in water, Al > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Co > Pb > Cd in bed sediment, while Al > Fe > Mn > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd in SPM. Among the abundant metals, Fe and Mn average concentrations exceeded BIS and WHO limits in river water. Similarly, Fe, Cd, and Zn, and most metals exceeded local background concentrations in bed sediment and SPM, respectively. Major ion chemistry in water signified carbonate weathering dominance during the time of sampling. Generally, Mn, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Co were derived from natural weathering and erosion, while Zn, Cd, and Pb were derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Metal index (MI) for river water showed that 27% of the locations were anthropogenically affected, whereas contamination factor and ecological risk assessment indicated highest contamination and risk from Cr and Cd in suspended sediments around urban centers in the middle basin. Furthermore, the confluence of Chambal and Yamuna increased heavy metal load in Yamuna and Ganga, respectively. The study highlighted the role of the water–sediment interaction indicating SPM is acting as a sink for metals followed by bed sediment.

Abstract:For decades, rivers have been used for transporting pollutants loaded with heavy metals (HMs) causing severe pollution in downstream. The current study aimed to review the levels and sources of 10 HMs, viz. As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, and Zn in the surface water of the rivers in Bangladesh. The PRISMA criteria were used to conduct a systematic review of the available literature published between 2001 and 2020, and thus a total of 55 documents were finally selected for review. The mean concentration of each HM exceeding the threshold limits as per World Health Organization (WHO), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and Department of Environment (DoE), Bangladesh standards were higher in the last decade (2011–2020) than in the previous one (2001–2010). Most HM concentrations in water were found above the threshold limits in three divisions (Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Chattogram). The Buriganga River in Dhaka has been the top polluted river in Bangladesh. Among the 10 HMs, six metals (As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, and Mn) exceeded the limit set by WHO, USEPA, and DoE in all three seasons, where mean values of most of the HMs were found to be the highest in the summer season. Statistical analyses identified possible sources of HMs such as natural weathering, electroplating, fertilizers and pesticides, mining and manufacturing, textiles, coal mining and burning, batteries, and paint industries. Strong legislations and regulations, awareness programs, continuous monitoring, and comprehensive research are urgently needed to control riverine HMs pollution in Bangladesh.
