Abstract:The particle size distribution, geochemical composition and sequential leaching of metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, Cr, Pb, Zn and Cd) are carried out in core sediments (<88 microm) from the Brahmani and Nandira Rivers, India. To confirm the contamination of downstream sediments by fly ash, mineralogical and morphological characterizations were carried out. High environmental risk of Co, Pb and Ni is due to their higher availability in exchangeable fraction. The metals like Zn, Cu and Mn represent an appreciable portion in the carbonate phase. Metals such as Zn, Pb, Cd, Co and Ni are associated with reducible phase may be due to adsorption. The organic bound Cu, Zn, and Pb seem to be second dominant fraction among non-lithogenous in Nandira sediments. Factor analysis data reveals that textural parameters, Fe-Mn oxy/hydroxides, organic precipitation and coal fly ash disposals, are individually responsible for the enrichment of heavy metals. The relationships among the stations are highlighted by cluster analysis to identify the contamination levels.

Abstract:The speed of increasing threats to the riverine water resources makes it more critical to protect the health of Old Brahmaputra River ecosystems. The current study was done to investigate the concentrations, distributions, sources, and ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment from the Old Brahmaputra River, Bangladesh. Samples were collected from seven sites and analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results showed that mean concentrations (mg/kg) of heavy metals were in the order of nickel (Ni) (44.69) ˃ chromium (Cr) (30.16) ˃ lead (Pb) (19.31) ˃ copper (Cu) (17.84) ˃ cadmium (Cd) (3.94) ˃ arsenic (As) (2.73). The contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), enrichment factor (EF), and geo-accumulation index ( I geo ) indicated low to moderate contamination. Toxic unit analysis revealed that the studied metals from all stations posed low risk. The sediment of the study river was uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, posing a minimal ecological risk. Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb originated from anthropogenic sources rather than geogenic sources, and caused the severity of contamination. In this regard, pollutant-based intensive monitoring of heavy metals and holistic ecological risk assessments are required to maintain a sound and healthy aquatic environment in the river.

Abstract:Speciations of metals were assessed in a tropical rain-fed river, flowing through the highly economically important part of the India. The pattern of distribution of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were evaluated in water and sediment along with mineralogical characterization, changes with different water quality parameters and their respective health hazard to the local population along the Damodar River basin during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The outcome of the speciation analysis using MINTEQ indicated that free metal ions, carbonate, chloride and sulfate ions were predominantly in anionic inorganic fractions, while in cationic inorganic fractions metal loads were negligible. Metals loads were higher in sediment phase than in the aqueous phase. The estimated values of Igeo in river sediment during both the seasons showed that most of the metals were found in the Igeo class 0–1 which represents unpolluted to moderately polluted sediment status. The result of partition coefficient indicated the strong retention capability of Cr, Pb, Co and Mn, while Cd, Zn, Cu and Ni have resilient mobility capacity. The mineralogical analysis of sediment samples indicated that in Damodar River, quartz, kaolinite and calcite minerals were dominantly present. The hazard index values of Cd, Co and Cr were > 1 in river water, which suggested potential health risk for the children. A combination of pragmatic, computational and statistical relationship between ionic species and fractions of metals represented a strong persuasion for identifying the alikeness among the different sites of the river.

Abstract:Navigation channels provide a vital link in the supply chain of inland transport. Excavation of sediment from the river bed and fluvial islands is necessary to make the large braided river navigable for transportation. Present research work investigates the feasibility of dredging operations in the mid-sand bars of the Brahmaputra River (Assam, India) for navigation purposes. Pernicious metal (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Cr, Pb, Cd) concentrations were assessed at 42 sampling locations, covering a reach length of approx. 600 km (reaches 1 and 2). Vertical samples were obtained from 0 cm, 50 cm, and 100 cm of the mid-sand bar. Various indices were evaluated to quantify the contamination level in the mid-sand bars. Based on the enrichment factor (EF), reach 2 was highly enriched with toxic metal-limiting dredging operation. Conversely, reach 1 was found suitable for dredging operations, owing to the low EF value. Various anthropogenic activities are likely to be the causative factor for the heavy metal enrichment in reach 2, including effluents from pharmaceutical industries, oil refineries, and industrial and domestic runoff. Statistical analysis also endorsed those heavy metals possess similar anthropogenic origins. Overall, the dredging can be feasible for reach 1 and at localized zones for reach 2 across the Brahmaputra River. Further, the study tries to present a suitable mitigation measure to carry out dredging operations and manage contaminated dredged sediment for reach 2.

Abstract:River water is too much vulnerable to pollution as it is exposed to a large number of pollutants through natural and anthropogenic activities. Mahananda River is an important river in West Bengal and Bangladesh without having prominent research information about its water quality and pollution status and is likely to be under the threat of pollution by practical experience. The study was conducted to identify the dissolved heavy metals and metalloids in the water and their concentrations; to analyse metal(loid) pollution status through Nemerow index (Pn) and heavy metal pollution index (HPI); to evaluate the non-carcinogenic human health hazards by hazard index (HI) and to anticipate the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) by index analysis. For this purpose 54 samples were collected from 27 sampling stations in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Eleven metal(loid)s (Mn, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, As, Cd, Pb and Hg) were tested and identified with concentrations considerably below from their regulatory standards indicating safe for drinking purpose. Pearson's correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) reveal the sources of these metal(loid)s as both geogenic and anthropogenic. HPI and HEI analysis permit the water as suitable for use but Pn index designates one sampling station as heavily polluted and a few stations as slightly polluted in pre-monsoon. HIAdult analysis reveals that seven sampling stations in pre-monsoon and two sampling stations in post-monsoon exceeded the limiting value (HI ≤ 1) of hazards. HIChild values were found greater than one (>1) at six sampling stations in the pre-monsoon season. ILCR analysis predicts that 15 sampling stations (55.55%) in pre-monsoon and six sampling stations in post-monsoon have crossed the cancer risk limiting value (ILCR > 1.0 × 10−4). As the study area does not possess any heavy industries, the metal(loid) pollution occurs mainly from heavily populated municipal zones like Siliguri, Barsoi and Malda town. The pre-monsoon values of different indices are greater than the post-monsoon ones because of the low quantity of water available and flow rate that increase the concentrations of metal(loid)s in river water. Moreover, some pollutants are washed out with heavy water during monsoon season. These municipalities need sustainable management planning.

Abstract:This study focuses on heavy metals distribution and their ecological risk in river water, bed sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) along the Ganga River basin. Overall abundance of the metals followed the sequence, Fe > Al > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cd > Cr > Zn > Co in water, Al > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Co > Pb > Cd in bed sediment, while Al > Fe > Mn > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd in SPM. Among the abundant metals, Fe and Mn average concentrations exceeded BIS and WHO limits in river water. Similarly, Fe, Cd, and Zn, and most metals exceeded local background concentrations in bed sediment and SPM, respectively. Major ion chemistry in water signified carbonate weathering dominance during the time of sampling. Generally, Mn, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Co were derived from natural weathering and erosion, while Zn, Cd, and Pb were derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Metal index (MI) for river water showed that 27% of the locations were anthropogenically affected, whereas contamination factor and ecological risk assessment indicated highest contamination and risk from Cr and Cd in suspended sediments around urban centers in the middle basin. Furthermore, the confluence of Chambal and Yamuna increased heavy metal load in Yamuna and Ganga, respectively. The study highlighted the role of the water–sediment interaction indicating SPM is acting as a sink for metals followed by bed sediment.

Abstract:Depending on the environmental conditions, surface sediments can retain all the contaminants present and provide a record of the anthropic activities affecting the aquatic environment. In order to analyze the impacts on reservoirs, surface sediments were collected in three characteristic regions (riverine, transitional, and limnetic zones) of seven reservoirs in São Paulo State, Brazil. Analyses were made of grain size, organic matter (OM), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN). Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) was used to determine pseudo-total and bioavailable metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Al). A Horiba probe was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, redox potential (ORP), and temperature (Temp) in the bottom water. The data were analyzed using multivariate statistics. Enrichment factors (EF), pollution load index values (PLI), and background values (BG) were also determined in order to evaluate the potential toxicity. Intra-reservoir and inter-reservoir spatial heterogeneity (p < 0.05) were observed using two-way analysis of similarities. Principal component analysis indicated greater influence of metals in the Barra Bonita, Salto Grande, and Rio Grande reservoirs, corroborating the PLI, EF, and BG data. Bioavailable Cu was found in the Rio Grande reservoir, possibly associated with copper sulfate used to control algal blooms, while bioavailable Ni in the Barra Bonita reservoir was attributed to the presence of industrial wastes and natural geology. The bottom water conditions indicated that the metals remained in insoluble forms.

Abstract:For the first time, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model to quantify the source contributions to heavy metal pollution of sediment was employed at national basin‐scale in the up‐mid‐downstream rivers (Teesta and Kortoya‐Shitalakkah and Meghna‐ Rupsha and Pasur) of Bangladesh. The metal contamination status, co‐occurrence, and ecotoxicological risk were also investigated. Sediment samples were collected from 30 sites at the depth range of 0–20 cm for analyzing nine metals using Inductively Coupled Plasma‐Mass Spectrometry (ICP‐MS). The mean concentrations of metals are varied for up‐lower mid‐downstream river systems. Results showed that Cr exhibited a strong significant co‐occurrence network with other metals (e.g., Mn, Fe, Ni). The Monte‐Carlo simulation results of the geo‐accumulation (Igeo) (63.3%), and risk indices (RI) (48.5%) depicted that Cd is the main contributor to sediments pollution. However, the cumulative probabilities of sediments being polluted by metals exhibits `moderate to heavily polluted` (Igeo: 46.6%; RI:16.7 %). Toxicity unit results revealed Zn and Cd are the key toxic contributors to sediments. The PMF model predicted metal concentrations and identified four potential sources. The agricultural source (Factor 1) mostly contributed to Cu (78.9%) and As (62.8%), while Ni (96.9%) and Mn (83.5%) exhibited industrial point sources (Factor 2) with two hotspots in northwestern and southwestern regions. Whereas, Cd (93.5%) showed anthropogenic point sources (Factor 3), and Fe (64.3%), and Cr (53.5%) depicted a mixed source (Factor 4). Spatially, similar patterns between PMF apportioning factors and predicted metal sources were identified, exhibiting the efficiency of the model for river systems analysis. Abstract:Metals and metalloids tainting sediments is an eminent issue, predominantly in megacities like Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, requiring an exhaustive examination to identify metal levels in river bodies that serve various populations. Thus, utilising pollution indices, multivariate analysis, and health risk assessment studies, we propose a novel investigation to examine the metal content in the Ulhas River sediments, a prominent agricultural and drinking water supply (320 million-litre per day) near Mumbai in Maharashtra, India. The eleven metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn) were examined monthly from 10 stations totaling 120 sediment specimens from October 2022 to September 2023. Investigations revealed that average values of Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni exceeded Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council and Agriculture and Resource Management Council values, while all metals exceeded World surface rock average limits except As. Various pollution indices showed that upstream sites had none to low level contamination, whereas downstream locations had moderate to considerable contamination, suggesting anthropogenic influences. Furthermore, multivariate analysis including correlation, cluster, and principal component analysis identified that sediment pollution was mostly caused by anthropogenic activities. Lastly, health risk assessment indicated Fe was non-carcinogenic to children, whereas Cr and Ni were carcinogenic to children and adults, with children being more susceptible. Thus, from the findings of the study it is clear that, despite low to moderate pollution levels, metals may have significant repercussions, thus requiring long-term planning, frequent monitoring, and metal abatement strategies to mitigate river contamination.

Abstract:Sustainable river ecosystem is the fundamental backbone of all civilizations of the world. Water contamination through heavy metals and metalloids causes wide environmental and public discontent which makes it a global concern. With this view, 20 km stretch of Gomti River encompassing 5-locations was selected for determination of 16-physicochemical parameters and 11-heavy metals in water and bed-sediment samples during two consecutive years 2019–2020 covering three seasons supplemented by indices and statistics. Bed-sediment characterization was done through scanning electron microscope–energy dispersive X-rays and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared analysis. River is significantly contaminated with Fe, Mg, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Co, Cd, Hg having corresponding mean values 10.1 ± 1.8, 31.7 ± 6.2, 1.4 ± 0.5, 0.42 ± 0.07, 0.09 ± 0.03, 0.03 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.02, 0.41 ± 0.14,0.19 ± 0.01, 0.18 ± 0.01, 0.002 ± 0.001 mg/l in water and 3418.7 ± 529.9, 1839.9 ± 417.6, 194.3 ± 49.1, 112.2 ± 37.5, 42.5 ± 15.7, 36.1 ± 10.6, 23.4 ± 8, 16.7 ± 5.9, 8.4 ± 3.2, 8.2 ± 3.3, 0.002 ± 0.001 μg/g in bed-sediment, respectively. Corresponding order of heavy metals concentration was Mg > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Co > Cd > Ni > Pb > Cu > Hg and Fe > Mg > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Co > Cd > Hg, respectively. Higher values of indices for risk quantification; geo-accumulation index (5.0), contamination factor (1191.8), enrichment factor (46.5) and potential ecological risk index (393.8) were found for Cd in bed-sediment samples. Principal component analysis (λ > 1) scored 3-factors having 65%, 19% and 11% variance for water and 75%, 10% and 7% variance for bed-sediment samples. Strong positive correlations (≥ 0.8) were observed among Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Pb, Cu for water and sediment samples. Study could be beneficial in providing knowledge regarding heavy metal induced ecological risk to aquatic organisms and suggest ways to reduce the burden of potential influx sources.

Abstract:Various environmental indicators were used to evaluate the water and sediment quality of the Netravathi-Gurupur estuary, India, for trace metals and pesticide pollution. The descended order of studied metal concentrations (μg/L) in the water was Fe (592.71) > Mn (98.35) > Zn (54.69) > Cu (6.64) > Cd (3.24) > Pb (2.38) > Cr (0.82) and in sediment (mg/kg) was Fe (11,396.53) > Mn (100.61) > Cr (75.41) > Zn (20.04) > Cu (12.77) > Pb (3.46) > Cd (0.02). However, pesticide residues were not detected in this estuarine environment . The various metal indexes categorised the water as uncontaminated, whereas contamination factor, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, degree of contamination and pollution load index indicated low to moderate sediment contamination. Multivariate statistics showed that the dominance of natural sources of trace metals with little anthropogenic impact. Improvement in water/sediment quality during the study period might be due to COVID-19 imposed lockdown.

Abstract:Understanding the changes in the chemical compositions of dissolved trace elements from source to sink is important for determining their spatiotemporal variations and the contributions from each sub-catchment in the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna Rivers. To estimate weathering and matter transfer in these Rivers and the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna (G–B–M) Estuary, we measured 15 dissolved trace element concentrations from surface and bottom water samples and exchangeable trace metals from suspended particulate matter (SPM). From December 2019 to January 2020, post-monsoon samples were collected from the upstream of the three rivers and the G–B–M Estuary. Dissolved trace elements in the Ganges and Meghna Rivers exhibited remarkable spatial variations, whereas those in the Brahmaputra River and the G–B–M Estuary were uniform. The dissolved trace elements, basic information (river length and drainage area), and physicochemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity) of the three rivers were inconsistent. The sample sites near urban areas and industrial centers had high concentrations of dissolved trace elements. In the G–B–M Estuary, iron and lead concentrations decreased along the salinity gradient, whereas selenium levels gradually increased, which may have been released by the SPM owing to its highly exchangeable trace metals. Compared with historical concentrations, trace elements that entered the G–B Estuary from the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers exhibited either decreased or increased metal fluxes due to additional terrigenous sources, suggesting that the inputs of trace element flux from the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers into the oceans may need to be re-evaluated. Furthermore, Fe and Pb concentrations and river fluxes in the Ganges and Changjiang have decreased in recent years. Hence, the fluxes of certain trace elements that enter the oceans from large rivers may require re-evaluation.

Abstract:This study of a downstream segment (Brahmaputra, Bangladesh) of one of the longest transboundary (China-India-Bangladesh) Himalayan rivers reveals elevated radioactivity compared to other freshwater basins across the world. Naturally occurring radioactive nuclides (226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) and metal contents (transition metals, Fe, Ti, Sc, and V; rare earth elements, La, Ce, Eu, Sm, Dy, Yb, and Lu; high field strength elements, Ta and Hf; and actinides, Th and U) in thirty sediment samples were measured by HPGe γ-spectrophotometry and research reactor-based neutron activation analysis, respectively. We systematically investigated the mechanism of the deposition of higher radioactivity concentrations and rare earth elements (REEs) associated with heavy minerals (HMs) and photomicrograph-based mineralogical analysis. The results show that total REEs (∑REE) and Ta, Hf, U, and Th are generally 1.5- to 3.0-fold elevated compared to crustal values associated with -δEu and -δCe anomalies, suggesting a felsic source provenance. The enrichment of light REEs (×1.5 upper continental crust (UCC)) and Th (×1.9 UCC), besides Th/U (=7.74 ± 2.35) and 232Th/40K ratios, along with the micrographic and statistical approaches, revealed the elevated presence of HMs. Fluvial suspended sedimentary transportation (from upstream) followed by mineralogical recycling and sorting enriched the HM depositions in this basin. Bivariate plots, including La/Th-Hf, La/Th-Th/Yb, and La/V-Th/Yb, revealed significant contributions of felsic source rock compared to mafic sources. The assessment of radiological hazards demonstrates ionizing-radiation-associated health risks to the local residents and people inhabiting houses made from Brahmaputra River sediments (as construction material).

Abstract:Lakes of Himalaya are one of the most fragile ecosystems on earth. Tourism and urban development in the upland region strongly affect its water resources. The high rate of sedimentation and organic matter deposition alters the ecological state of sediment bed, which indirectly influences on dynamics of metallic elements. We investigated spatial and temporal variations of water and sediment characteristic in Lake Sattal of Central Himalaya, India. Samples were collected seasonally from four sampling locations from January 2011 to December 2012. Pearson’s correlation and Canonical correspondence analysis (CCAs) were applied to examine the dynamics and behaviors of heavy metals. Concentrations of elements were in the order of fluoride (Fl) > zinc (Zn) > copper (Cu) > iron (Fe) > manganese (Mn). Sand size fraction was higher in the littoral zone while clay particle was dominant in the profundal zone of the lake. Dissolved oxygen at sediment–water-interface (SWI) and water temperature were the major factors influencing the dynamics of metallic contents in the water column. Spatially, total organic matter (TOM) was higher in the deeper portion of the lake. Our study revealed that mobility of Fe is temperature-dependent, whereas speciation of Mn and Cu are primarily controlled by the suboxic condition of SWI in organic-rich site. Upland lakes are more vulnerable to anoxic condition and have severe implications on heavy metals speciation. Proper implementation of land use policies and management practices, including stormwater detention, can be integrated into resolving such problems.

Abstract:The growing concern of aquatic heavy metal (HM) pollution is dependent on the toxic nature of its bio-available form. Thus, bio-availability is guided by the HM fractionation in water. This study was therefore conducted to evaluate the spatial impact on physicochemical fractionation of HM (Zn, Mn, Cu, and Fe) in the waters of the Hirakud reservoir in India. Speciation along different pores using a filtration technique was adopted to fractionate the HMs in water samples. The result suggests that the water of the study area is polluted with Cu (0.22–0.35 mg/L), Mn (0.15–0.23 mg/L), and Fe (1.90–3.10 mg/L) that have crossed their permissible limits while Zn (0.17–0.97 mg/L) was within the permissible standard. When studied for physical partitioning, the right dyke was comparatively more polluted than the left dyke. While the water samples were dominated by the dissolved fraction of heavy metals, it was construed that a large proportion of the HMs are in bio-available form. Further, a distinct impact of spatial variation on metal fractionation was also evident in the study with PCA revealing site-specific behaviour. Therefore, it can be concluded that multiple anthropogenic activities lead to the distribution and fractionation of HMs in water.

Abstract:Metal contamination from upstream river water is a threat to coastal and estuarine ecosystem. The present study was undertaken to unveil sedimentation processes and patterns of heavy metal deposition along the salinity gradient of a tropical estuary and its mangrove ecosystem. Sediment columns from three representative sites of differential salinity, anthropogenic interference, and sediment deposition pattern were sampled and analyzed for grain size distribution and metal concentrations as a function of depth. Sediments were dominantly of silty-medium sand texture. A suite of fluvial and alluvial processes, and marine depositional forcing control the sediment deposition and associated heavy metal loading in this estuary. The depth profile revealed a gradual increase in heavy metal accumulation in recent top layer sediments and smaller fractions (silt + clay), irrespective of tidal regimes. Alluvial processes and long tidal retention favor accumulation of heavy metals. Enrichment factor (0.52–15), geo-accumulation index (1.4–5.8), and average pollution load index (PLI = 2.0) indicated moderate to higher heavy metal contamination status of this estuary. This study showed that alluvial processes acted as dominant drivers for the accumulation of metals in sediments, which prevailed over the influence of marine processes. Longer tidal retention of the water column favored more accumulation of heavy metals. Metal accumulation in the sediments entails a potential risk of bioaccumulation and biomagnification through the food web, and may increasingly impact estuarine ecology, economy, and ultimately human health.

Abstract:The study aimed to understand the metal enrichment and toxicity in lower and middle regions of a tropical Mandovi Estuary, revealed metals dilution by coarser intertidal mudflat sediments in the lower estuary (downstream of the fishing jetty-core S). A relatively calm depositional environment prevailed at the middle estuary (core M) and also at the upstream of the jetty of the lower estuary (core L) facilitating deposition and enrichment of Mn and Zn in cores M and Mn, Cu and Co in core L. The distribution of trace metals in sediments was regulated by grain size, total organic carbon and Fe–Mn oxides. The potential contamination index indicated a moderate degree of metal contamination in sediments while the anthropogenic factor showed the signatures of human-induced activities in the enrichment of metals. The sequential extraction of metals showed bioavailability of Mn, Cu, Zn and Co. Fe–Mn oxide and organic/sulphide were key phases for the retention of bioavailable metals. The elevated level of these metals suggested possible toxicity to benthic biota, particularly from Mn (cores L and M) and Co (core L) according to the screening quick reference table.

Abstract:Surface water samples were collected from 21 sampling sites throughout the Subarnarekha River during pre monsoon, monsoon and post monsoon seasons. The concentrations of metals were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the seasonal fluctuation, source apportionment and risk assessment. The results demonstrated that concentrations of the metals showed significant seasonality and most variables exhibited higher levels in the pre monsoon season. Principal component analysis (PCA) outcome of four factors together explained 76.9% of the variance with >1 initial eigenvalue indicated both innate and anthropogenic activities are contributing factors as source of metal profusion in Subarnarekha River. Risk of metals on human health was then evaluated using hazard quotients (HQ) by ingestion and dermal pathways for adult and child and it was indicated that As with HQingestion>1, was the most important pollutant leading to non-carcinogenic concerns. The largest contributors to chronic risks were As, V and Co, in all the seasons. The HQdermal of all the elements for adult and child were below unity, suggesting that the metals posed little hazards via dermal absorption indicating that the oral intake was the primary exposure pathway.
