Abstract:The use of yeast antagonists to suppress postharvest fruit diseases and reduce economic losses has been attracting widespread attentions. In this study, the effectiveness of Meyerozyma caribbica isolated from Tibet soils against Aspergillus ochraceus and underlying mechanisms were investigated. M. caribbica exhibited great resistances under adverse environment and could obviously inhibit the growth and ochratoxin A (OTA) production of A. ochraceus via mycelium destruction and down-regulation of gene expressions involved in OTA synthesis. Besides, when grapes inoculated with A. ochraceus, disease incidence was reduced by both M. caribbica and its produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs). M. caribbica enhanced grape resistance to A. ochraceus by increasing resistance-related enzyme activities and gene expressions. VOCs were identified with the main compounds including 3-methyl-1-butanol, oxirane,2,2,3-trimethyl and 2-methyl-1-propanol. Accumulation of endogenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content was observed in grapes treated by yeast VOCs. Therefore, M. caribbica can be applied as a promising biocontrol agent for postharvest fruit loss control.
Reciprocal inhibition of autophagy and Botrytis cinerea-induced programmed cell death in 'Shine Muscat' grapes

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea causes gray mold, decreasing the quality of table grapes. The berry response to B. cinerea infection was explored in present study, focusing on the relationship between presence of autophagy and programmed cell death (PCD). Results demonstrated B. cinerea infection decreased cell viability, triggering cell death, possibly resulting in PCD occurrence. It was further verified by increased terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL)-positive nuclei, heightened caspase 3-like and caspase 9-like protease activity, and elevated expression of metacaspase genes. Additionally, autophagy was indicated by the increased VvATG expression and autophagosome formation. Notably, the autophagy activator rapamycin reduced TUNEL-positive nuclei, whereas the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine increased caspase 9-like protease activity. The PCD activator C2-ceramide inhibited autophagy, whereas the PCD inhibitor Acetyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-aldehyde (Ac-DEVD-CHO) enhanced autophagy gene expression. Autophagy and B. cinerea-induced PCD in berry cells are reciprocally negatively regulated; and the rapamycin and Ac-DEVD-CHO could potentially maintain table grape edible quality.

Abstract:Mulberries are a kind of berries with high nutritional value and delicious taste; however, their shelf life is extremely short, and are perishable and difficult to preserve. Recently, cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) holds a great potential as an efficient, economical and ecofriendly method for food sterilization. Herein, this study investigated the effects of CAP treatment with different time (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3min) and different strength (0, 2 and 3 V) on mulberries. The results showed that Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) is the primary post-harvest rot causing fungus of mulberries, and CAP can effectively reduce the rot rate of mulberries during storage and inhibit the growth of B. cinerea. In addition, this study explored the sterilization mechanism of CAP on B. cinerea, and found that CAP can destroy the structure of B. cinerea, affected its metabolism. It inhibited the growth of spores and hyphae of B. cinerea, and caused intracellular ROS accumulation in large quantities, caused a redox imbalance in B. cinerea. Meanwhile, CAP didn't adversely affect the quality of mulberries. These findings can be used to promote the development of CAP as an emerging means of disinfection and preservation of fresh berries.

Abstract:This research studied the morph'ological characterization and quality attributes of 'Kyoho' and 'Yongyou NO.1' (Vitis vinifera L. x Vitis labrusca L.) grape berry and rachis in response to postharvest treatment with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) alone or in combination with elevated 80% O-2 (H-O-2)/20% CO2 (H-CO2). Results indicated that the integrated application of exogenous 1-MCP alone and combined with H-O-2/H-CO2 significantly prevented the rachis browning and chlorophyll degradation, maintained the cellular microstructure integrity and promoted esters and terpenes synthesis. Additionally, the transcriptional expression of genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis was sharply downregulated by 1-MCP treatment in both cultivar rachis and berries. And genes expression related to softening was also downregulated by 1-MCP alone and plus elevated O-2/CO2 atmospheres treatment. Particularly, the combinatorial treatment of 1-MCP and H-O-2 effectively impeded berry abscission and alcohols accumulation; whereas 1-MCP with H-CO2 treatment maintained the membrane permeability in berries. Nevertheless, 1-MCP alone or in combination with elevated atmospheres did not significantly affect total soluble solids and titratable acidity and did not harm sensory quality in both 'Kyoho' and 'Yongyou NO.1' cultivars after 32 days of storage.

Abstract:(E)-2-hexenal fumigation inhibits the growth of Botrytis. cinerea, but the direct target and its effect on postharvest strawberry have not yet been discovered. In the present study, we applied increasing level of (E)-2-hexenal fumigation from 0.524 & mu;M to 1048 & mu;M to B. cinerea on strawberry and medium. Results showed that (E)-2hexenal fumigation inhibited lesion diameter on strawberry by 13.96 %, 20.41 % and 100 % with the dosage increasing. On medium, (E)-2-hexenal fumigation increased both the ROS and mitochondria membrane potential level of B. cinerea. LC-MS/MS and FTIR results demonstrate a 1:1 Michael addition reaction between (E)-2hexenal and glutathione with the product GSH-H in B. cinerea under (E)-2-hexenal fumigation. Furthermore, the consumption of glutathione and glutathione disulfide along with the production of GSH-H during fumigation in B. cinerea caused by (E)-2-hexenal were both concentration- and time-dependent. This study locates the direct target and discovered the functional model of (E)-2-hexenal to B. cinerea.
Efficacy of pterostilbene suppression of postharvest gray mold in table grapes and potential mechanisms

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea is an economically devastating necrotrophic fungus that is responsible for gray mold infection of table grapes. Fungicides application remains the most common approach in its control. However, in consideration of food and environmental safety, safe and eco-friendly alternatives are desirable to manage gray mold. Pterostilbene is a natural antimicrobial metabolite that inhibits growth of several phytopathogenic fungi. Moreover, pterostilbene has been widely used as a food additive on the basis of its safety and oxidation properties. However, the specific inhibitory effects of pterostilbene for pathogen control of postharvest fruit and its precise mechanism of action remain to be defined. Here, 0.25 g L−1 pterostilbene could suppress the development of gray mold in table grapes. Fluorescent staining indicated that pterostilbene-mediated disease suppression is mediated through loss of plasma membrane integrity. Electron microscopy revealed that pterostilbene inhibits B. cinerea by altering the morphology of the hyphae and conidiophores, with destruction of the plasma membrane and organelles. Furthermore, quantitative real-time PCR highlighted pterostilbene-mediated gene modulation and overexpression of genes associated with laccase production and cellular damage on B. cinerea, together with increased laccase activity. These data better define the mechanisms through which pterostilbene inhibits B. cinerea growth, thus making pterostilbene an attractive candidate in postharvest fruit disease management strategies.

Abstract:Rachis browning is a visual marker of table grape freshness and plays a vital role in consumer preference and food waste. In this study, the role of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in maintenance of quality attributes of grape rachis during shelf-life was systematically studied, and results demonstrated that the rachis browning was significantly inhibited, and endogenous phenolic metabolism and sulfur assimilation were affected by exogenous SO2, at both transcriptional and metabolic levels. Furthermore, SO2 treatment promoted the accumulation of major phenolic compounds, such as (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and proanthocyanidins, by increasing the transcript levels of VvLAR and Vv3GT genes involved in flavonoid pathway. Besides, gene expression involved in sulfite assimilation was also activated by exogenous SO2, resulting in the accumulation of sulfur-containing metabolites, including cysteine, hydrogen sulfide, and glutathione. The present study provided the first evidence for the anti-browning effect of SO2 through the accumulation of flavanols and sulfur-containing compounds.

Abstract:Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.,) is among the world's leading fruit crops. The production of grapes is severely affected by many diseases including gray mold, caused by the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea. Although all Vitis species can be hosts for B. cinerea, V. vinifera are particularly susceptible. Accordingly, this disease poses a significant threat to the grape industry and causes substantial economic losses. Development of resistant V. vinifera cultivars has progressed from incidental selection by farmers, to targeted selection through the use of statistics and experimental design, to the employment of genetic and genomic data. Emerging technologies such as marker-assisted selection and genetic engineering have facilitated the development of cultivars that possess resistance to B. cinerea. A promising method involves using the CRISPR/Cas9 system to induce targeted mutagenesis and develop genetically modified non-transgenic crops. Hence, scientists are now engaged in the active pursuit of identifying genes associated with susceptibility and resistance. This review focuses on the known mechanisms of interaction between the B. cinerea pathogen and its grapevine host. It also explores innate immune systems that have evolved in V. vinifera, with the objective of facilitating the rapid development of resistant grapevine cultivars.
Some factors predisposing grape berries to infection by Botrytis cinerea

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea was frequently isolated from rapidly senescing or moribund tissues (stamens, calyptrae, immature berries and flowers or partly developed berries, miscellaneous leaf, stem and tendril pieces) of grapevine; the calyptrae being more heavily contaminated than the stamens in the flower bunches. There was a significant difference in the extent to which intact and injured berries were infected by the pathogen 3 weeks before harvest. Bunches infested with light-brown apple moth (Epiphas postvittana (Walker)) were more rapidly infected by B. cinerea. Of thecultivars tested, ‘Mataro’ was the least susceptible to predisposition wounding because the berries had a high critical turgor; however, once the berries were split, they appeared to be as susceptible to infection as the other cultivars tested. The longer the berries were exposed to surface wetness, the higher the degree of infection. A minimum temperature difference of 9°C caused a significant difference of 6-12 h in the length of the infection period. Infection of berries occurred over a wide range of temperatures (15-25°C).

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea causes diseases in plants that lead to severe crop losses. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological and morphological changes and gene expression induced by camptothecin, a monoterpene indole alkaloid, for the control of B. cinerea. Using a single concentration of 8.0 μg/mL, which showed to reduce 50 % of the dry weight of fungal mycelia, the alkaloid caused a 25 to 30 % reduction in colony diameter from 24 to 72 h of incubation and 34 to 54.7 % reduction in fungal biomass, from 24 to 96 h of incubation. Furthermore, changes in mycelial morphology were noticed based on both scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations. POD activity was reduced by 49.1 %, but PAL and SOD activity were not affected. Moreover, q-PCR analysis showed that the expression of erg27, os1, and SDHB were not affected, but the expression of cytb increased significantly, thus suggesting the involvement of this respiration-related gene in the response of B. cinerea to camptothecin. In summary, the alkaloid has the potential to improve the control of gray mold caused by B. cinerea.
Dynamic Changes in Plant Secondary Metabolites Induced by Botrytis cinerea Infection

Abstract:In response to pathogen infection, some plants increase production of secondary metabolites, which not only enhance plant defense but also induce fungicide resistance, especially multidrug resistance (MDR) in the pathogen through preadaptation. To investigate the cause of MDR in Botrytis cinerea, grapes 'Victoria' (susceptible to B. cinerea) and 'Shine Muscat' (resistant to B. cinerea) were inoculated into seedling leaves with B. cinerea, followed by extraction of metabolites from the leaves on days 3, 6, and 9 after inoculation. The extract was analyzed using gas chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass (GC/QTOF) combined with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for volatile and nonvolatile metabolomic components. Nonvolatile metabolites γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), resveratrol, piceid, and some carbohydrates or amino acids, coupled with volatile metabolites β-ocimene, α-farnesene, caryophyllene, germacrene D, β-copaene, and alkanes, accumulated at a higher level in grape leaves infected with B. cinerea compared to in noninoculated leaves. Among the established metabolic pathways, seven had greater impacts, including aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, galactose metabolism, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis. Furthermore, isoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis; phenylpropanoid biosynthesis; monobactam biosynthesis; tropane, piperidine, and pyridine alkaloid biosynthesis; phenylalanine metabolism; and glucosinolate biosynthesis were related to antifungal activities. Based on liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass (LC/QTOF) detection and bioassay, B. cinerea infection induced production of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) including eugenol, flavanone, reserpine, resveratrol, and salicylic acid, which all have inhibitory activity against B. cinerea. These compounds also promoted overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes, which are involved in induction of MDR in B. cinerea.
Inhibitory Abilities of Bacillus Isolates and Their Culture Filtrates Against the Gray Mold Caused by Botrytis Cinerea on Postharvest Fruit

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea, a major phytopathogenic fungus, has been reported to infect more than 200 crop species worldwide, and it causes massive losses in yield. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory abilities and effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens RS-25, Bacillus licheniformis MG-4, Bacillus subtilis Z-14, and Bacillus subtilis Pnf-4 and their culture filtrates and extracts against the gray mold caused by B. cinerea on postharvest tomato, strawberry, and grapefruit. The results revealed that the cells of Z-14, culture filtrate of RS25, and cells of Z-14 showed the strongest biocontrol activity against the gray mold on the strawberry, grape, and tomato fruit, respectively. All the strains produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and the VOCs of Pnf-4 displayed the highest inhibition values. Based on headspace solid-phase microextraction in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, esters accounted for the largest percentage of the VOCs produced by RS-25, MG-4, Z-14, and Pnf-4 (36.80%, 29.58%, 30.78%, and 36.26%, respectively). All the strains showed potent cellulase and protease activities, but no chitinase activity. RS-25, Z-14, and MG-4, but not Pnf-4, grew on chrome azurol S agar, and an orange halo was formed around the colonies. All the strains showed biofilm formation, fruit colonization, and lipopeptide production, which may be the main modes of action of the antagonists against B. cinerea on the fruit. This study provides the basis for developing natural biocontrol agents against the gray mold caused by B. cinerea on postharvest fruit.
A Simulation Study to Reveal the Epidemiology and Aerosol Transmission Characteristics of Botrytis cinerea in Grape Greenhouses

Abstract:Most previously studies had considered that plant fungal disease spread widely and quickly by airborne fungi spore. However, little is known about the release dynamics, aerodynamic diameter, and pathogenicity threshold of fungi spore in air of the greenhouse environment. Grape gray mold is caused by Botrytis cinerea; the disease spreads in greenhouses by spores in the air and the spore attaches to the leaf and infects plant through the orifice. In this study, 120 μmol/L propidium monoazide (PMA) were suitable for treatment and quantitation viable spore by quantitative real-time PCR, with a limit detection of 8 spores/mL in spore suspension. In total, 93 strains of B. cinerea with high pathogenicity were isolated and identified from the air samples of grapevines greenhouses by a portable sampler. The particle size of B. cinerea aerosol ranged predominately from 0.65–3.3 μm, accounting for 71.77% of the total amount. The B. cinerea spore aerosols were infective to healthy grape plants, with the lowest concentration that could cause disease being 42 spores/m3. Botrytis cinerea spores collected form six greenhouse in Shandong Province were quantified by PMA-qPCR, with a higher concentration (1182.89 spores/m3) in May and June and a lower concentration in July and August (6.30 spores/m3). This study suggested that spore dispersal in aerosol is an important route for the epidemiology of plant fungal disease, and these data will contribute to the development of new strategies for the effective alleviation and control of plant diseases.

Abstract:Biological control by microbial antagonists has been proposed as a viable strategy for the control of postharvest diseases in fruit. In the present study, biocontrol efficacy of the bacterial antagonist Lactobacillus plantarum CM-3 against gray mold infection on harvested grapes was documented along with the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms responsible for biocontrol activity. In this regard, a transcriptomic analysis of the response of grapes to L. plantarum CM3 was conducted. Results indicated that L. plantarum CM-3 significantly decreased the level of natural postharvest decay in grapes without causing any adverse effects on quality traits. Treatment of grapes with L. plantarum CM-3 (1 × 109 CFU mL−1) resulted in a 55 % reduction in disease incidence caused by Botrytis cinerea. Meanwhile, L. plantarum CM-3 enhanced the activity of several enzymes in grapes that are closely associated with defense, including POD, PPO, CAT, APX, PAL, and GLU. RNA-seq analysis indicated extensive changes in the gene expression profile of grape berries in response to being treated with L. plantarum CM-3. In total, 1,327 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, among which 78.1 % (1,037) were upregulated and 21.9 % (290) were downregulated. Numerous pathways were strongly influenced by the L. plantarum CM-3 treatment, including signal perception and transduction, maintenance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, primary metabolic pathways, and secondary metabolism. Additionally, the expression of 22 DEGs linked to enhancing disease resistance was analyzed by RT-qPCR and their expression levels were found to well correspond with the results obtained in the analysis of the RNA-seq data. Our data indicate that L. plantarum CM-3 can enhance host resistance by altering the expression of defense genes and their corresponding proteins, including PR1, WRKY33, WRKY22, PTI6 and peroxidase isoenzyme. Collectively, results of our study indicate that L. plantarum CM-3 treatment enhances the disease resistance of harvested grapes through a comprehensive and complex regulatory network. These findings provide new information on the molecular mechanism responsible for the enhancement of host disease resistance in grapes by L. plantarum CM-3. It also demonstrates a biocontrol strategy that can be used to elicit defense responses in fruit against fungal pathogens.

Abstract:Introduction: Pathogen infection influences the post-harvest shelf life of grape berries. In a preliminary study, metabolites produced by Bacillus velezensis significantly inhibited the growth of the grape postharvest pathogen Penicillium olsonii. Methods: To investigate the mechanism of interaction between B. velezensis and P. olsonii, a draft genome was generated for P. olsonii WHG5 using the Illumina NovaSeq platform, and the transcriptomic changes in WHG5 were analyzed in response to the exposure to B. velezensis metabolites (10% v/v). Results: The expression levels of genes associated with sporulation, including GCY1, brlA, and abaA, were down-regulated compared with those of the control. In addition, spore deformation and abnormal swelling of the conidiophore were observed. The expression of crucial enzymes, including fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and mannitol-2-dehydrogenase, was down-regulated, indicating that the glycolytic pathway of WHG5 was adversely affected by B. velezensis metabolites. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that glutathione metabolism and the antioxidant enzyme system were involved in the response to B. velezensis metabolites. The down-regulation of the pathogenesis-related genes, PG1 and POT1, suggested that B. velezensis metabolites decreased the pathogenicity of P. olsonii. B. velezensis metabolites disrupted the homeostasis of reactive oxygen species in P. olsonii by affecting glucose metabolism, resulting in spore deformation and disruption of growth. In addition, the expression of key pathogenesis-related genes was down-regulated, thereby reducing the pathogenicity of P. olsonii. Disscusion: This study provides insights into the responses of P. olsonii to B. velezensis metabolites and identifies potential target genes that may be useful in biocontrol strategies for the suppression of post-harvest spoilage in grapes.

Abstract:Grey mould caused by Botrytis cinerea is among the most important disease affecting the production of grapevine worldwide. The high economical loss each year has led producers to become more dependent on chemical pesticides for protection. However, environmental impacts of the pesticides overuse have sparked crescent interest in developing alternative biocontrol methods. The use of plant-associated bacteria has, thus, received many attentions as a promising strategy for sustainable agriculture. Three strains, isolated from the rhizosphere of crops cultivated in the northeast of France, were evaluated for their antagonistic effect. They were found to exhibit an antagonistic effect against a set of phytopathogenic fungi. Phenotypic and molecular characterization showed that isolates belong to the genus Burkholderia. The genome sequencing and analysis of isolated strains revealed the presence of gene clusters coding for secondary metabolites potentially involved in the biocontrol. When the grapevine plantlets were infected with B. cinerea, all plants associated with isolated strains showed a significant protection against B. cinerea compared to non-inoculated plants. To understand the mechanisms contributing to the biocontrol effect of selected isolates, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the expression of several defense genes were investigated. The maximum accumulation of H2O2 was detected in the inoculated cell suspension medium 30 min after the challenge with B. cinerea. After pathogen challenge, results showed that grapevine cell culture inoculated with isolated strains exhibited significant over expression of defense markers genes PR5, PR10, and chit4c, in response to B. cinerea, confirming their priming effect.
Control Effects of Bacillus Siamensis G-3 Volatile Compounds on Raspberry Postharvest Diseases Caused by Botrytis Cinerea and Rhizopus Stolonifer

Abstract:Post-harvest diseases of raspberries affect their storage and subsequently the ability to provide consumers with fresh products. The antifungal activity of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) against both pre and postharvest diseases has previously been demonstrated, but the control of raspberry postharvest diseases caused by Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer using MVOCs has not been extensively studied. We have thus investigated the effects of Bacillus siamensis G-3 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on controlling the diseases caused by B. cinerea and R. stolonifer. Bioassays of the VOCs of B. siamensis G-3 exhibited significant control effects (89.4%) on the two pathogens. The VOCs composition was studied with solid phase micro extraction and GC/mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), and 22 VOCs, different from the controls, were identified. Among these compounds, only 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) had significant control effects on the pathogens (*P < 0.05), 52.38 and 93.33%, respectively, compared with the controls in vivo. With the 2,4-DTBP treatments, the raspberries could be stored for 20 d at 0 degrees C, with the disease rate maintained at similar to 10%. In addition, we have reported for the first time, that 2,4-DTBP may be a better preservative than BHT and could be used as a bio-fumigant for controlling raspberry postharvest diseases caused by B. cinerea and R. stolonifer in vivo.

Abstract:This study examined the potential use of three bacterial strains-Paraburkholderia sp. strain CRV74, Pseudomonas sp. strain CRV21, and Acinetobacter sp. strain CRV19-as biocontrol agents of Botrytis cinerea in grapevine. These strains were selected for their ability to inhibit B. cinerea growth in vitro and used in field conditions for the control of grey mould symptoms in 'Glera' grapes. To this end, after inoculating these microorganisms onto plants sprayed with B. cinerea spores, the final yield, the physicochemical characteristics of the must, disease incidence, and the possible influence on the expression of plant-defence proteins were evaluated. Strain CRV21 resulted as being the most effective in combating grey mould (-20% of disease incidence). Although yield was not affected, significantly different values of total soluble solids content was observed. Additionally, a significant up-regulation of the genes PR-1, PR-5, β-1,3-glucanase, and class III chitinase was observed. These findings highlight the potential application of strains with anti-botrytis activity as sustainable alternatives to chemical defence for the control of this pathogen.
Curse or blessing: Growth- and laccase-modulating properties of polyphenols and their oxidized derivatives on Botrytis cinerea

Abstract:Infection of grapevines with the grey mold pathogen Botrytis cinerea results in severe problems for winemakers worldwide. Browning of wine is caused by the laccase-mediated oxidation of polyphenols. In the last decades, Botrytis management has become increasingly difficult due to the rising number of resistances and the genetic variety of Botrytis strains. During the search for sustainable fungicides, polyphenols showed great potential to inhibit fungal growth. The present study revealed two important aspects regarding the effects of grape-specific polyphenols and their polymerized oxidation products on Botrytis wild strains. On the one hand, laccase-mediated oxidized polyphenols, which resemble the products found in infected grapes, showed the same potential for inhibition of growth and laccase activity, but differed from their native forms. On the other hand, the impact of phenolic compounds on mycelial growth is not correlated to the effect on laccase activity. Instead, mycelial growth and relative specific laccase activity appear to be modulated independently. All phenolic compounds showed not only inhibitory but also inductive effects on fungal growth and/or laccase activity, an observation which is reported for the first time. The simultaneous inhibition of growth and laccase activity demonstrated may serve as a basis for the development of a natural botryticide. Yet, the results showed considerable differences between genetically distinguishable strains, impeding the use of a specific phenolic compound against the genetic variety of wild strains. The present findings might have important implications for future understanding of Botrytis cinerea infections and sustainable Botrytis management including the role of polyphenols.
