Impact of the Virtual Interview Format on Urology Residency Interviews: A Survey of Program Directors

Abstract:Introduction: Our objective is to assess the impact of the virtual interview (VI) format on urology residency interviews during the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspectives of program directors (PDs). Methods: An anonymous survey was sent to PDs of American Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited urology residency programs. Questions were designed to evaluate how VIs affected programs' assessment of applicants, interview logistics, and overall perspectives regarding in-person and virtual interviews. Results: A total of 42 PDs (31%) responded to our survey. VIs negatively affected programs' ability to assess applicants' fit with their residency program (71%), commitment to urology along with their ability to function as a resident (67%), and personality and communication skills (71%) when compared to in-person interviews. Fifty percent of PDs reported that they relied more heavily on objective metrics when ranking applicants, compared to prior years. VIs were more economical than in-person interviews for all participating programs, with each program saving an average of $3,135 in interview-related costs. Additionally, 33% of PDs reported that VIs were less time-consuming when compared to in-person interviews, with 26% of PDs reporting that they were able to interview more applicants. Only 19% of PDs reported that VIs were better than in-person interviews. Given the option, 60% of PDs intend on hosting both virtual and in-person interviews moving forward, while 9% and 31% of programs intend to exclusively host virtual and in-person interviews, respectively. Conclusions: PDs perceived VIs to be less reliable than in-person interviews for subjective evaluation of applicants; however, many PDs still desire to integrate VIs in future application cycles.
Evaluation of the Virtual Interviews for Resident Recruitment Due to COVID-19 Travel Restrictions: A Nationwide Survey of US Senior Medical Students

Abstract:Background and objectives: Due to COVID-19, residency programs could not conduct in-person interviews during the 2020-2021 match and were forced to implement a virtual format. We conducted a nationwide survey of US senior medical students to evaluate their perception of the virtual interview process and to solicit their recommendations for future virtual interview best practices. Methods: This study was administered to US fourth-year medical students currently participating in the residency match using Survey Monkey during March 2021. Students were contacted through their respective student affairs deans. Surveys solicited demographic information, 26 4-point Likert-scale questions, and four free-response questions. Results: A total of 357 surveys were completed. Most respondents stated that they could confidently represent themselves to the program (71.7%) using a virtual platform. However, only 11.6% stated that they could confidently assess a program's facility using a virtual platform. Although most respondents (58.26%) found that virtual meet and greets helped them better assess their fit for the program, less than half (46%) confidently believed they could assess their fit into the program after the conclusion of the virtual interview. Regarding potential disparities introduced by virtual interviews, 40.6% believed that the virtual interviews introduce greater inequalities into the match process. Two-thirds of respondents (239, 66.95%), believed that there should be a limit on the number of interview offers an applicant can accept, with the maximum number of interviews per specialty capped at 25.7 (10-150). Finally, just over two-thirds (69.47%), claimed they could confidently prepare their rank-order list at the conclusion of the interview. Conclusions: Most respondents found virtual interviews financially beneficial, however difficulty in assessing fit was a challenge. Best practice recommendations from the respondents include shorter interviews, more engaging resident-led social hours without faculty present, and preinterview packages to include video representations of the program facilities.

Abstract:Sedentary male (n = 94) and female (n = 111) university students were randomly sampled to enumerate the prediction methods for estimating maximum oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) by the heart rate ratio method (HR(peak) x HR(rest)(-1) or HR(max) x HR(rest)(-1)). VO(2max) was directly measured by incremental bicycle exercise whereas equations of Uth et al. (2004) were used for indirect prediction of VO(2max). The difference between directly measured VO(2max) (males: 38.95 ± 3.81 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1); females: 35.90 ± 3.46 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) and predicted VO(2max) or P VO(2max) (males: 38.87 ± 1.15 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1); females: 36.24 ± 1.94 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) from HR(peak) x HR(rest)(-1) or estimated VO(2max) or E VO(2max) (males: 37.72 ± 2.55 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1); females: 37.20 ± 1.50 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) from HR(max)x HR(rest)(-1) was statistically insignificant. Correlation between VO(2max) with P VO(2max) (r = 0.87 in males and r = 0.58 in females) and E VO(2max) (r = 0.83 in males and r = 0.79 in females) was significant (p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed standard errors of estimate of VO(2max) when predicted from HR(peak) x HR(rest)(-1) and HR(max) x HR(rest)(-1) were 1.87 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) and 2.14 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1), respectively, in males and 2.09 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) and 2.83 ml x kg(-1) xmin(-1), respectively, in females. The results by applying these norms in the confirmatory group were in good agreement with insignificant difference of VO(2max) (males: 38.84 ± 3.83 ml x kg(-1)x min(-1); females: 34.23 ± 3.70 ml x kg(-l) x min(-1)) from P VO(2max (males: 38.99 ± 3.68 ml x kg(-l) x min(-1); females: 34.47 ± 3.55 ml x kg(-1)x min(-1)) or from EVO(2max), (males: 38.39 ± 3.66 ml x kg(-l) x min(-); females: 33.87 ± 3.52 ml x kg(-l) x min(-l)). Based on the present observation, the heart rate ratio method is recommended for predicting VO(2max) in Indian university students.
Impact of the Virtual Format on Plastic Surgery Residency and Fellowship Interviews: A National Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: The 2020 to 2021 residency and fellowship application cycles were profoundly affected by the introduction of virtual interviews. The authors investigated the impact the virtual format had on plastic surgery residency and fellowship interviews from the perspectives of program directors. Methods: Surveys were sent to program directors of integrated plastic surgery residency and fellowship programs to ascertain their perspectives regarding the virtual format's impact on residency and fellowship interviews. Program directors were stratified into residency and fellowship cohorts, and comparative analysis was performed. Results: Ninety-two program directors, 28 from integrated plastic surgery residency programs and 64 from fellowship programs, completed our survey (35 percent). Compared to in-person interviews, virtual interviews were reported to be more economical and time efficient by program directors of residency (100 percent and 46 percent, respectively) and fellowship programs (97 percent and 48 percent, respectively). Consequentially, 36 percent and 47 percent of residency and fellowship programs were able to interview more applicants, respectively. Program directors of residency and fellowship programs reported that virtual interviews hindered their ability to assess applicants' fit with the program (75 percent and 63 percent, respectively), personality and communication skills (75 percent and 64 percent, respectively), and commitment to the field, along with their ability to function as a trainee (57 percent and 50 percent, respectively). Overall, 71 percent of program directors of residency and 58 percent of program directors of fellowship programs preferred in-person interviews. The majority of residency (71 percent) and fellowship (56 percent) program directors intend to conduct both in-person and virtual interviews in future application cycles ( p = 0.12). Conclusions: Despite preferring in-person interviews, program directors intend to host both in-person and virtual interviews in future application cycles. It remains to be seen how virtual interviews will be used moving forward.

Abstract:Wingler et al. evaluated perceptions of residency recruitment during COVID-19 and found that 49% of residency applicants and 68% of programs preferred onsite over virtual interviews. Postpandemic, 43% of programs planned to return to in-person interviews, while 35% were undecided. In contrast, Beechinor et al. found a majority of programs preferred virtual interviews. Benefits of virtual interviews were identified by both studies including reduced cost, anxiety, and time, and increased flexibility. Alternatively, onsite interviews reduce technology issues, allow practice site tours, and increase socialization. Advantages of virtual interviews, namely, reduced cost (estimated >$1000/applicant), benefit applicants significantly. Cost reduction can be particularly impactful for underrepresented minorities; therefore, virtual interviews are likely advantageous for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, therefore optimizing virtual interviews is worth exploring. These studies' data are from 2020 to 2021, the first year of virtual recruitment. Since then, residents and programs have gained experience on virtual platforms. Increased social media presence of programs enables virtual tours and less formal interactions, though applicant use of programs' social media has not equally increased. It is challenging for applicants to locate programs' social media accounts, as platforms used and account name format are not consistent. Most residents still use the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists online residency directory; therefore, programs should update their listings to include social media accounts to improve applicant access. Strategies to optimize candidate socialization with the program in informal settings via a virtual social hour or game night have found success. While applicants in both studies and programs in Wingler's study preferred onsite interviews, 50%–80% of residents and programs were confident ranking after virtual interviews. Given the benefits of virtual interviews and opportunities to address their challenges, programs should work toward optimizing virtual recruitment. The associated reduced candidate costs and potential benefits for DEI cannot be overlooked.

Abstract:Background: During the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, in-person interviews for the recruitment of family medicine residents shifted to online (virtual) interviews. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to gather the ideas about virtual interviews of family medicine applicants (interviewees), and faculty and staff who interviewed these applicants (interviewers), and (2) to describe interviewers' and interviewees' opinions of use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) in the recruitment process as well as during clinical practice. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study. Participants were both interviewers and candidates who applied to the McGill University Family Medicine Residency Program for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 cycles. Results: The study population was constituted by N = 132 applicants and N = 60 interviewers. The response rate was 91.7% (55/60) for interviewers and 43.2% (57/132) for interviewees. Both interviewers (43.7%) and interviewees (68.5%) were satisfied with connecting through virtual interviews. Interviewers (43.75%) and interviewees (55.5%) would prefer for both options to be available. Both interviewers (50%) and interviewees (72%) were interested in emerging technologies. Almost all interviewees (95.8%) were interested in learning about AI and VR and its application in clinical practice with the majority (60.8%) agreeing that it should be taught within medical training. Conclusion: Although experience of virtual interviewing during the COVID-19 pandemic has been positive for both interviewees and interviewers, the findings of this study suggest that it will be unlikely that virtual interviews completely replace in-person interviews for selecting candidates for family medicine residency programs in the long term as participants value aspects of in-person interviews and would want a choice in format. Since incoming family medicine physicians seem to be eager to learn and utilize emerging technologies such as AI and VR, educators and institutions should consider family physicians' needs due to the changing technological landscape in family medicine education.

Abstract:Introduction The recent pandemic necessitated virtual interviews for residency applications. While the travel restrictions have eased, the future of virtual interviews remains uncertain, and more information is needed regarding their impact. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of virtual interviews on both matched applicants' and program directors' satisfaction with match outcomes. Secondarily, we assessed the impact of virtual interviews on resident diversity. Methods This study received endorsement from COERG (Collaborative Orthopedic Education and Research Group). It consisted of surveys distributed to 24 orthopedic surgery residency program directors and residents in their programs, administered at the midpoint of their second year of residency. The surveys were conducted in 2 rounds: the first round targeted the class of 2025, who completed all interviews in person and served as the control group. The second round, conducted the following year, targeted the class of 2026, who underwent all interviews virtually. Each round involved 2 similar surveys to the ones conducted the year before, 1 for program directors and one for residents. Demographics, including resident race and socioeconomic measures, were also collected along with these surveys. Satisfaction was rated on a scale of 1 to 5, and mean satisfaction scores were calculated. Mann-Whitney U-test was performed for statistical analysis. Results We received a total of 96 responses from residents, 60 in-person and 36 virtual interviewees. Of the 24 residency program directors who received surveys, 23 responded to the first-round survey (95.8%), while 18 responded to the second-round survey (75%), resulting in an overall response rate of 85.4%. Residents who interviewed virtually reported lower overall satisfaction with their residency program (p < 0.01), less satisfaction with a good fit between the applicant and the program (p < 0.01), faculty feedback (p < 0.05), research opportunities (p < 0.05), and the educational curriculum at their program (p < 0.01). Program directors were less satisfied with the timeliness of residents from the virtual cohort (p < 0.05) and the knowledge of the virtual cohort (p < 0.05). We found no significant difference in resident diversity between the 2 cohorts of matched residents. Conclusion Virtual interviews were associated with a reduction in both resident and program director satisfaction with match outcomes. Further, virtual interviews did not significantly increase residency diversity. These findings do not support the use of virtual interviews in the orthopedic surgery match process.

Comparing Perceptions of Virtual and In-Person Interviews: Results From a National Survey of Internal Medicine Residents

Abstract:Background Since 2020, virtual interviews have become the typical way in which applicants assess residency programs. It is unknown whether the change from in-person to virtual interviews has been associated with changes in perceptions of the quality of information gathered by prospective applicants. Objective To ascertain perspectives on the satisfaction with, quality of, and accuracy of information gathered by internal medicine (IM) residency applicants from virtual and in-person interviews. Methods Twenty-nine thousand, seven hundred and seventy-six residents from US and Puerto Rico residency programs sitting for the 2022 American College of Physicians Internal Medicine In-Training Examination (IM-ITE) were surveyed. An optional, 5-question survey was administered at the end of the examination. Responses were analyzed based on interview format-virtual (postgraduate year [PGY]-1-2) or in-person (PGY-3)-and PGY. Results Of 29 776, 23 161 residents responded to the survey (77.8% response rate). Regardless of PGY, respondents reported a high degree of satisfaction with the quality of information gathered from their interview day, though there was a statistically significant difference between virtual and in-person [somewhat/very satisfied: In-person 5938 of 7410 (80.1%); 95% CI [79.2, 81.0] vs virtual 12 070 of 15 751 (76.6%); 95% CI [76.0, 77.3]:P<.001]. Residents in all PGYs reported sessions with residents and one-on-one interviews as the most important factors when creating their rank lists. Conclusions We found differences in satisfaction and perceptions of the quality of information gathered between IM residents who participated in virtual and in-person interviews. However, regardless of format, most respondents reported satisfaction with their interview experience.
Virtual Interviews in the Post-COVID-19 Emergency Era: Insights from the Gastroenterology Fellowship Applicants and Programs

Abstract:Background: Virtual interviews are still recommended for fellowship applications, 3 years after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Improving equity by reducing the cost for the applicants has been the most important reason for continuing virtual interviews. However, some argue that important information may be missed in a virtual setting. Our objective was to assess the perspective of Gastroenterology (GI) fellowship interviewers and applicants toward virtual interviews. Methods: We designed two different anonymous surveys directed at GI programs and GI applicants who were interviewed for GI fellowship programs from 2020 to 2022 and matched to a GI program. Survey links were emailed to the Program Directors (PDs) and Program Coordinators via the AGA listserv starting in January 2023. A descriptive analysis was performed using Excel, and Fisher's exact tests were performed using R version 4.3.1. Results: Sixty-one applicants and 79 interviewers responded to our survey. More than 80% of applicants strongly agreed (n = 36; 59%) and agreed (n = 14; 23%) that they would prefer in-person interviews if money was not an issue. When applicants were asked about the interview format in order of their preference, "in-person, hybrid, virtual" was the most popular answer (n = 16; 26.2%). Most interviewers (n = 47; 59.5%) do not prefer virtual interviews over in-person interviews. Furthermore, some interviewers were rarely able to judge the applicants' interpersonal (n = 17; 21.5%) and ethical skills (n = 16; 20.3%). These results differed according to the type of interviewer (p = 0.013 and 0.018, respectively). Conclusion: Based on our survey, most programs still prefer in-person interviews. Despite the several advantages of virtual interviews, the majority of applicants would prefer an in-person setting if the financial burden was not a factor. Nonetheless, many applicants think that the cost savings outweigh all the disadvantages associated with virtual interviews. The lack of empathy, personal connections, and engagement may impact the ability of interviewers to judge and ultimately rank a candidate. The virtual interview is here to stay, and we need input from the applicants and the interviewers to make the process more productive.

Abstract:On May 7, 2020, the Coalition for Physician Accountability's released "Medical Students in the Class of 2021: Moving Across Institutions for Post Graduate Training," which comprises official recommendations on keeping programs and medical students safe during the upcoming match cycle with the challenges posed by COVID-19. In these recommendations, away rotations are discouraged, and all programs are compelled to commit to virtual interviews. Unlike employers and applicants in other industries, orthopaedic residency/fellowship programs and candidates seeking those positions have not routinely conducted virtual interviews. Without in-person interviews, applicants may perceive a limited ability to demonstrate their qualifications, judge program culture, and gauge ultimate program compatibility. Likewise, programs may perceive the inability to evaluate a candidate in real time, physically show program strengths, and ultimately judge applicant compatibility. Careful preparation and execution of a virtual interview can overcome these perceived limitations, whereas benefits, such as decreased cost for both programs and applicants, can make virtual interviews appealing. The purpose of this review was to help define a virtual interview, illustrate the benefits, and offer tips to both programs and applicants on how to prepare and perform optimally on an interview day.
Analyzing the Landscape of the 2021 Virtual Match: A Nationwide Survey of Radiology Programs’ Stakeholders

Abstract:RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to provide insights into the adaptive strategies, benefits, and challenges faced by the radiology programs during the 2021 residency virtual Match. Furthermore, we explored the potential impacts of related topics, such as diversity and social media use on the Match process and outcomes.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 31 questions was designed and distributed via e-mails to individuals involved radiology programs match process during the 2021 Match. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the results of most questions. Two questions comparing the changes in factors influencing the selection of applicants on a Likert scale of 1-5 were analyzed using paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test where p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: Responses from 125 participants were analyzed. The following factors carried less weight in evaluating applicants during 2021 Match: away rotations (p < 0.01), no failed attempts in USMLE Step 1/CK (p < 0.01), grades in radiology clerkship (p < 0.04), and class rank/quartile (p < 0.04), while personal statements were more important (p < 0.03). Out of the 125 respondents, 80 (64%) and 58 (47%) strongly or somewhat agree on the effectiveness of virtual interviews in gauging applicants' candidacy and showing their programs' advantages, respectively. Advantages of virtual interviews included decreased cost, time flexibility, less faculty burden, and an increased number of offered interviews according to 81% (101/125), 46% (58/125), 40%, (50/125), and 34% (43/125), respectively. The most helpful platforms that showcased program advantages were program websites followed by Twitter and Instagram.CONCLUSION: Most radiology programs were able to adjust to the virtual interview process, and the majority agree on their effectiveness citing many benefits. However, there were mixed opinions if it could be sustained in future cycles.

Abstract:Introduction: Virtual interviews (VI) are now a permanent part of pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) recruitment, especially given the cost and equity advantages. Yet inability to visit programs in person can impact decision-making, leading applicants to apply to more programs. Moreover, the cost advantages of VI may encourage applicants to apply to programs farther away than they might otherwise have been willing or able to travel. This could create unnecessary strain on programs. We conducted this study to determine whether PEM fellowship applicants would apply to a larger number of programs and in different geographic patterns with VI (2020 and 2021) as compared to in-person interviews (2018 and 2019).Methods: We conducted an anonymous national survey of all PEM fellows comparing two cohorts: current fellows who interviewed in-person (applied in 2018/2019) and fellows who underwent VIs in 2020/ 2021 (current fellows and those recently matched in 2021). The study took place in March–April 2022. Questions focused on geographic considerations during interviews and the match. We used descriptive statistics, chi-square and t-tests for analysis.Results: Overall response rate was 42% (231/550); 32% (n = 74) interviewed in person and 68% (n = 157) virtually. Fellows applied to a median of 4/6 geographic regions (interquartile range 2, 5). Most applied for fellowship both in the same region as residency (216, 93%) and outside (192, 83%). Only the Pacific region saw a statistically significant increase in applicants during VI (59.9% vs 43.2%, P = 0.02). There was no statistical difference in the number of programs applied to during in-person vs VI (mean difference (95% confidence interval 0.72, −2.8 – 4.2). A majority matched in their preferred state both during VI (60.4%) and in-person interviews (65.7%). The difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.45).Conclusion: While more PEM fellowship applicants applied outside the geographic area where their residency was and to the Pacific region, there was no overall increase in the number of programs or geographic areas PEM applicants applied to during VI as compared to in-person interview seasons. As this was the first two years of VI, ongoing data collection will further identify trends and the impactof VI.

Abstract:Purpose To characterize how the adoption of virtual residency interviews (2020–2021 cycle) has impacted the geographic distribution of radiology resident matches. Methods University-based interventional (IR) and diagnostic radiology (DR) residency programs from 2017 to 2021 were identified using a national residency database (FRIEDA). Public applicant data were obtained from official residency program websites. Medical schools and residency programs were categorized by US census regions. Geographic applicant distribution before and after the initiation of virtual interviews was statistically assessed using Chi-square tests. The effect of virtual interviews on the probability of matching within the same geographic region as one's medical school was evaluated with multivariate logistic regression. Results 4358 radiology residents (88% diagnostic, 12% interventional) matched at 102 radiology programs during the study period. 71% ( n = 3115 residents) had data available for analysis. 56.3% of DR and 49.3% of IR residents matched in the same geographic region as their medical school. The geographic distribution of applicants who matched at Southern IR residency programs significantly changed after implementation of virtual interviews (p < 0.0001). Virtual interviews did not increase the odds of matching in the same region as one's medical school for IR (OR 1.11, p = 0.08) or DR (OR 1.01, p = 0.58) applicants. Top-20 ranked DR programs had lower odds of in-region matches (OR 0.87, p < 0.001). Conclusion With few exceptions, shifting to virtual residency interviews did not significantly affect the geographic distribution of IR or DR residency matches. Top-ranked DR programs match more regionally diverse applicants.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Studies of virtual interviews (VI) for residency lack contemporaneous In-person Interview (IPI) comparators, leaving uncertain the impact of interview mode on the match process. The study aims to evaluate the effect of allowing candidates to choose interview format, the VI versus IPI, on demographic characteristics of candidates and on rank order list (ROL) position.STUDY DESIGN: A Cohort study of residency applicants (2022-2023 recruiting season) to a general surgery training program. 105 applicants were invited for interview, of whom 84 candidates were interviewed. Invited candidates were allowed to choose between the following interview options: 1) In person only, 2) Virtual only, 3) In person, but would accept virtual, 4) Virtual, but would accept in-person, and 5) No preference/either. The main outcomes were the differences in demographics of candidates and relative ROL position based on interview format.RESULTS: Most candidates preferred VI (63%), while 26% preferred IPI and 11% had no preference. 43 VI and 41 IPI were conducted. VI candidates were more likely female (62.8% vs. 31.7%, p = 0.004), attended more distant medical schools (609 [207.5, 831] miles vs. 161 [51, 228] miles, p < 0.001), had higher USMLE scores, and better letters of recommendation. IPI candidates were more likely to have signaled interest (19.5% vs. 4.7%, p = 0.037) and were scored higher for interest in the program/area (4.34 ± 0.48 vs. 4.00 ± 0.62, p = 0.007). The format of interview was not associated with ultimate rank position by either univariate or multivariable analysis.CONCLUSION: Among applicants for residency training positions, allowing a choice of interview format was associated with significant demographic and academic differences between those interviewing virtually versus in-person but had little ultimate effect on ROL position.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE In response to Covid-19, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommended for residency interviews to take place virtually. Benefits of virtual interviews include substantial cost saving and scheduling flexibility. However, it is more difficult to understand program culture and there is concern that more emphasis will be placed on board examination scores and class rank. Programs are split in their decision to keep virtual interviews in the future. This study aims to provide more clarification on students' perspectives and explore the role of an optional second look day to bridge the gap left by the lack of in-person interaction. DESIGN This cross-sectional study surveyed applicants at our general surgery residency program during the 2022 to 2023 cycle. An optional second look day event was held after submission of the program's rank list. The first survey was sent to all applicants who interviewed with the residency program and asked to pick an interview style that they favored (in person vs virtual) and then asked to rate factors that impacted their decision. It also asked if an optional second look day event was made available, what factors would applicants consider to be important in their decision to attend. The second survey was sent to applicants who attended second look day and asked applicants to state importance of factors that led to their decision to attend. RESULTS About 50/110 completed the first survey. Applicants preferred virtual over in-person interviews (52% vs 28%). Those who chose virtual selected factors of time commitment and financial burden to be very important compared to those who chose in-person. Applicants who preferred in-person interviews placed most importance on avoiding technical issues and having personal interactions such as: with attending surgeons, with residents, assessment of program culture, visiting facilities, and visiting the town. Applicants were asked to pick important factors if they were to attend an optional second look day after their virtual interview. The following factors were chosen as very important: time commitment, financial burden, interaction with program leadership, interaction with attending surgeons, interaction with residents, visiting facilities, and visiting the town. We then held a second look event after the submission of our rank list. 34/110 attended and 17 complete the survey. Cost and time commitment were not as important to this group who actually attended; they chose in-person interactions with leadership and residents and assessing the program culture to be most important. CONCLUSION This study aimed to determine the best interview method based on student perceptions. We also piloted an optional second look day to determine whether or not it fills the gaps left by the suspension of in-person interviews. We recommend continuing with virtual interviews as this is what applicants prefer. It alleviates the financial burden of travel and allows for better time management. However, the significance of in-person interactions cannot be ignored. We propose that second look days should be incorporated after submission of the program's rank list to allow applicants the opportunity for in-person interactions, exploration of the town, and enhance their overall interviewing experience.

Abstract:Objective This study used a program evaluation approach to investigate the perceptions of utilizing in-person applicant interviews for a general surgery residency program. Design The study utilized de-identified data routinely collected during the residency program applicant interviews in the General Surgery Residency Program during the fall of 2023. Applicant and faculty/resident exit interview questionnaires were developed to evaluate perceptions of in-person interviewing; the questions were informed by domains for considering the appropriateness and feasibility of continuing in-person interviews as identified by the institution's Graduate Medical Education Committee. Applicants completed the survey at the end of their interview day; faculty and resident interviewers completed the survey following the applicant rank meeting. Setting The Sponsoring Institution approved a pilot transition from virtual to in-person interviews for the General Surgery Residency Program 2023 recruitment cycle. Surveys were completed electronically. Participants Sixty-four applicants were interviewed and requested to complete the exit survey. The survey was completed by 55 (Response rate = 86%) program applicants and eight (Response rate = 100%) faculty and residents in the program. Results 49.1% of applicants indicated a preference for in-person interviews, 40.0% of applicants indicated a preference to choose and only 10.9% indicated a preference for virtual interviews Applicants from out-of-state had a significantly higher preference for in-person interviews than those from in-state. Applicants and faculty interviewers perceived in-person interviews to provide a strong assessment of applicants. Applicants from out-of-state had a significantly higher confidence in their ability to demonstrate their strength and assess fit than those from in-state. Conclusions While most applicants and faculty interviewers were generally comfortable with an in-person interviewing format, applicants from out-of-state had a particularly high preference for and perception of in-person interviews. General surgery residency programs and sponsoring institutions would benefit from the development of a comprehensive program evaluation strategies for their residency program interviews to make evidence-informed decisions about how best to structure interviews for their programs.

Abstract:Background: Residency programs transitioned to primarily virtual interviews due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift raised questions regarding expectations and patterns of applicant cancellation timeliness. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in applicant cancellations after transitioning to virtual interviews.Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of interview data from a three-year emergency medicine residency at a tertiary-care academic medical center. Using archived data from Interview Broker, we examined scheduling patterns between one in-person (2019–2020) and two virtual interview cohorts (2020–2021 and 2021–2022). Our outcomes were the overall cancellation rates relative to interview slots as well as the proportion of cancellations that occurred within 7 or 14 days of the interview date.Results: There were 453 interview slots and 568 applicants invited. Overall, applicants canceled 17.1%of scheduled interviews. Compared with in-person interviews, applicants canceled significantly fewer virtual interviews (in person: 40/128 (31.3%), virtual year 1: 22/178 (12.4%), virtual year 2: 15/143 (10.5%), P = 0.001). Conversely, applicants canceled significantly more virtual interviews within both the 14-day threshold (in person: 8/40 (20%), virtual year 1: 12/22 (55.5%), virtual year 2: 12/15 (80%), P < 0.001) and the 7-day threshold (in person: 0/40 (0%), virtual year 1: 3/22 (13.6%), virtual year 2: 4/15 (26.7%), P = 0.004).Conclusion: While limited, at our site, changing to a virtual interview format correlated with fewer cancellations overall. The proportion of cancellations within 14 days was much higher during virtual interview seasons, with most cancellations occurring during that time frame. Additional studies are needed to determine the effects of cancellation patterns on emergency medicine recruitment.
