Abstract:CoCrFeNi is a well-studied face centered cubic (fcc) high entropy alloy (HEA) that exhibits excellent ductility but only limited strength. The present study focusses on improving the strength-ductility balance of this HEA by addition of varying amounts of SiC using an arc melting route. Chromium present in the base HEA is found to result in decomposition of SiC during melting. Consequently, interaction of free carbon with chromium results in the in-situ formation of chromium carbide, while free silicon remains in solution in the base HEA and/or interacts with the constituent elements of the base HEA to form silicides. The changes in microstructural phases with increasing amount of SiC are found to follow the sequence: fcc → fcc + eutectic → fcc + chromium carbide platelets → fcc + chromium carbide platelets + silicides → fcc + chromium carbide platelets + silicides + graphite globules/flakes. In comparison to both conventional and high entropy alloys, the resulting composites were found to exhibit a very wide range of mechanical properties (yield strength from 277 MPa with more than 60% elongation to 2522 MPa with 6% elongation). Some of the developed high entropy composites showed an outstanding combination of mechanical properties (yield strength 1200 MPa with 37% elongation) and occupied previously unattainable regions in a yield strength versus elongation map. In addition to their significant elongation, the hardness and yield strength of the HEA composites are found to lie in the same range as those of bulk metallic glasses. It is therefore believed that development of high entropy composites can help in obtaining outstanding combinations of mechanical properties for advanced structural applications.
Study on Microstructure and Properties of WC Particle-Reinforced FeCoCrNi-Matrix High Entropy Alloy Composites

Abstract:In recent years, high entropy alloy (HEA) matrix composites have undergone rapid development. In this work, the effects of different WC contents (10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.%) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of FeCoCrNi HEA matrix composites prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) were studied. The results show that the WC-HEA composites are mainly composed of an FCC matrix phase (Ni, Fe) and carbide phases (Cr7C3, Co3W3C, WC, etc.). The hardness of the 30 WC-HEA composites was the highest at 459.2 HV, which is 71.2% higher than the 268.3 HV of the pure matrix material. Similarly, the compressive yield strength of the 30 WC-HEA composite was the largest, reaching 1315.1 MPa, which is 112.1% higher than that of the pure matrix material. However, the compression deformation rate of the 30 WC-HEA composite significantly decreased to 16.6%. Under the same dry friction conditions, the addition of an appropriate amount of WC particles can reduce the friction coefficient of the HEA matrix. The wear volume of the composites decreased rapidly with the increase of WC content. The wear volume of 30 WC-HEA was the lowest, only 3.17% of that of the pure matrix material.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy alloy HEA (CrFeCoNi) was reinforced with variety of weight percentages of 5:20 wt.% WC particles. The alloy samples were mechanically prepared in a ball roll mill for 25 h by 10:1 ball to powder ratio at 180 rpm. Then WC was mixed with the prepared alloys in a high-speed ball mill for 1 h by 350 rpm under a controlled atmosphere. The mixed samples were compacted by a uniaxial press under 700 MPa and then sintered at 1200 °C for 90 min under air atmosphere. The corrosion behavior of the tested samples in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated using electrochemical polarization measurements. The microstructure of the sintered samples with high relative density showed three phases, which were FCC matrix, W-rich carbide, and Cr-rich carbide and homogeneously distributed all over the alloy matrix. The hardness of the (CrFeCoNi) 1-X (WC) X HEAs was increased gradually with the increasing of WC content from about 336.41 HV up to 632.48 HV at room temperature. The results indicated that the addition of WC improves the corrosion resistance. Especially, the 20 wt.% of WC addition remarkably enhanced the comprehensive corrosion resistance and easy passivation of (CrFeCoNi) 1-X (WC) X HEAs. Also, the wear rate of 0 wt.% WC HEA is (1.70E-04) which is approximately 4.5 times higher than the wear rate of 20 wt.% WC HEA (3.81E-05); this means that wear resistance is significantly improved with the increase of WC content.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying is the most popular processing method for preventing nanoparticle agglomeration in metal matrix nanocomposites and is one of the primary methods for preparing high-entropy alloy (HEA) powders. In this study, HEA matrix nanocomposite powders with a diffuse distribution of tungsten carbide are prepared by adding WC during the preparation of FeCoCrNiAl HEA through high-energy ball milling by extending the ball-milling time. After 10 h of ball milling, a body-centered cubic (BCC)-phase HEA is obtained, and WC particles are observed to have adhered to the surface of the HEA matrix powder. With a further increase in the ball-milling time, the WC particles continuously fracture and adhere to the matrix powder. During repeated plastic deformation, fracture, and cold welding of the HEA powder, the BCC phase gradually transforms into a face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, and the WC microfine powder is gradually and uniformly dispersed in the HEA matrix. The dynamic process between repeated cold welding and fracture ensures a stable powder size and inhibits the agglomeration of WC particles. Simultaneously, the intrinsic properties of the HEA lead to a gradual spheroidization of the composite powder. A final FCC and BCC biphasic HEA-matrix WC nanocomposite spherical powder is produced.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are being considered as potential reinforcements in metal matrices to overcome limitations exhibited by ceramic reinforcements. In the present work, FeCoNiMnCr HEA-reinforced copper matrix composites were fabricated through powder metallurgy and investigated for their mechanical, wear, and thermal expansion behaviors. Elemental powders of Fe, Cr, Ni, Mn, and Co were mechanically alloyed in a high-energy ball mill for 15 h to obtain single-phase FCC-structured FeCoNiMnCr HEA powders. These milled HEA and Cu powders were proportionately blended for required compositions (0 wt.%, 2.5 wt.%, 5 wt.%, and 10 wt.% HEA), subsequently compacted at 700 MPa and sintered at 900 °C in an Ar atmosphere to produce Cu-HEA composites. The microstructure of the FeCoNiMnCr HEA and the Cu-HEA composites were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The micro-hardness and compressive strength of Cu-10% HEA were 40% and 60% more than pure Cu, respectively. Cu-HEA composites showed reduced specific wear rates and COF values as compared to the pure Cu matrix. The co-efficient of thermal expansion (CTE) curves of the Cu-HEA composites were similar to that of pure Cu due to low thermal mismatch between the HEA reinforcement and the Cu matrix, resulting in a reduction of thermal stresses.

Abstract:Fe 50 Mn 30 Co 10 Cr 10 high entropy alloy (HEA) can be considered as a candidate structural and functional material, but the early failure during friction with heavy load can limit its more extensive applications. In this paper, a series of tungsten carbide particle reinforced Fe 50 Mn 30 Co 10 Cr 10 HEAs were fabricated by laser cladding technique, the influence of tungsten carbide content on microstructure, mechanical properties and tribological behaviors were explored systematically. The results indicated that the dissolution and diffusion of tungsten carbide could contribute to a wettability between tungsten carbide and HEA matrix, and grain refinement was caused by increasing tungsten carbide. The UTS and EL of the P10 sample are increased by simultaneously by 26.8% and 31.1% compared with UTS of 696 MPa and EL of 15.1% for P5 sample. UTS and EL were enhanced simultaneously owing to fine-grained strengthening and nanoscale precipitate strengthening. But higher content of tungsten carbide could cause lower elongation owing to the embrittlement of the materials. Just as this, Rockwell hardness and friction coefficient has an increasing trend with increasing tungsten carbide when an opposite trend exists in volume wear rate. It can indicate that hardness is a more important factor for wear resistance, and excellent wear resistance with 1.25 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(N·m) appear in higher-content WCp reinforced HEA composite. Furthermore, wear mechanism is transformed from abrasive wear in low-content tungsten carbide to adhesive wear in high-content tungsten carbide.

Abstract:The Al matrix composites with different HEA addition ranging from 5.2 wt. % to 19.8 wt. % were fabricated by rotation friction extrusion (RFE) process. The microstructure results revealed that the average grain size of the composites was pronouncedly reduced by 70.5–81.8 % than that of the RFE processed aluminum (RFEed Al), and abundant second phases were formed in the composites. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased with the HEA content. Significantly, the UTS of the composite with 19.8 wt. % HEA content was 224.5 MPa, increased by 150.8 % compared with the RFEed Al, and the good uniform elongation of 16.7 % was maintained. The improvement in mechanical properties was caused by the grain refinement mechanism, Orowan strengthening, load transfer strengthening, and dislocation strengthening. The strain hardening ability of the composites was higher than that of the RFEed Al and increased with the HEA content, as a result of the formed second phases and the added HEA particles. However, the strain hardening rate of the composites decreased quickly because of the high dynamic recovery rate caused by fine grains, resulting in the low uniform elongation of the composites. The current research provides a fundamental understanding to develop HEA/Al composites.

Abstract:Developing materials with superior strength and wear resistance has always drawn challenging research for advanced engineering applications. Herein, considerable efforts have been devoted to enhancing the strength and wear resistance of face-centered cubic (FCC)-structured CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) by incorporating HfO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) through a powder metallurgy approach. The phase composition, microstructure, mechanical, and tribological properties of HEA composites were investigated. The XRD results reveal that the composite powders consisted of the FCC solid solution along with minor HfO 2 phases. In addition, sintered HEAs showed the major FCC phase along with minor Cr-rich and HfO 2 phases. Microscopic results confirmed the uniform distribution of HfO 2 NPs throughout the matrix during the milling process. With increasing HfO 2 contents, the hardness of the HEAs increased from 270±10 to 520±10 HV, while the compressive yield strength increased from 370 to 1500 MPa, due to dispersion and grain boundary strengthening effects. Furthermore, composite HEAs showed a decrease in coefficient of friction and wear rates with increasing HfO 2 content due to increased surface hardness and transition in wear mechanism from severe wear to mild abrasive wear. The present study demonstrates the feasibility of producing high-performance oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) HEAs for advanced structural applications.

Abstract:AlCoCrFeNi is one of the early studied high-entropy alloys (HEAs), attracting considerable attention due to its attractive mechanical properties. Efforts have been continuously made improve properties of the HEA by modifying its composition. In this study, WC particles were added to AlCoCrFeNi alloy with different percentages (10, 30 and 60 wt.%) using an arc furnace. Since medium-entropy alloys with fewer elements may also possess attractive properties with less structural complication, we also added WC to Co-free medium-entropy alloy, AlCrFeNi, in comparison with its high-entropy HEA companion. Microstructure, mechanical properties and resistances against wear, corrosion and corrosive wear of the WC-added alloys were investigated. It was shown that the added WC decomposed and formed in situ carbides. The WC-added AlCrFeNi is harder with a higher wear resistance than the WC-added AlCoCrFeNi. Both the alloys consist of a BCC matrix and carbides in a eutectic state. With increasing the WC content, hardness and wear resistance of the alloys increased. The medium-entropy alloy AlCrFeNi showed better performance than AlCoCrFeNi. For comparison, Co-WC composite alloy was also made using the arc furnace. The wear volume loss of AlCrFeNi-60 wt.%WC was only half of that of Co-60 wt.%WC under the same wearing condition. The corrosion resistance of the Co-containing alloy, e.g., AlCoCrFeNi+60WC, showed its corrosion resistance lower than that of Co-free AlCrFeNi-60 wt.%WC, mainly due to its lower %Cr. The addition of WC also significantly reduced the volume loss caused by corrosive wear in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for both alloys.

Abstract:WC-CoCrFeNiAl composites were fabricated via SPS using commercial CoCrFeNiAl and WC powders, with the optimal addition content of CoCrFeNiAl determined. Furthermore, the influence of phase transformation in CoCrFeNiAl high-entropy alloy on the mechanical properties of WC-CoCrFeNiAl composites was investigated. The results indicate that the hysteresis diffusion effect of CoCrFeNiAl HEA can significantly impede the growth of WC grains. Moreover, during the sintering process, a BCC-to-FCC phase transformation occurs in CoCrFeNiAl HEA. The phase transition of HEA can be regulated by adjusting the sintering temperature, resulting in a decrease in hardness and an increase in fracture toughness of WC-CoCrFeNiAl composites as HEAs undergo phase transformation. The Vickers hardness and fracture toughness values of WC-10CoCrFeNiAl composites sintered at 1250 °C are comparable to those of WC-10Co hard alloy, with respective values of 17.64 GPa and 12.3 MPa m1/2.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) have become the most researched structural materials in the scientific community during the last decade due to their attributes like excellent strength and wear resistance. In this research, CrCuFeNiZn HEA was prepared using mechanical alloying technique. Further, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of prepared HEA were carried out at various milling time intervals (10 min, 5 h, 10 h, 15 h, 20 h, and 25 h) to determine solid solution formation. Results manifest that CrCuFeNiZn HEA exhibited BCC + FCC (dual phase) structure after 25 h of milling. Moreover, the crystallite size as measured from the XRD analysis for the 25 h milled powder was found to be 32.8 nm and lattice strain at the end of milling is calculated to be 0.428%. SEM-EDS analysis further confirms the homogeneous distribution of the constituting elements in the as-fabricated alloy aggregate.

Abstract:In this study, ceramic particle (WC) reinforced AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy matrix composites (WCx/HEA1-x, x = 0, 5, 10wt%) were prepared by using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology. The microstructure evolution and wear behavior of the printed WCx/HEA1-x composites were analyzed, and the strengthening mechanism and anti-wear mechanism of the WCx/HEA1-x composites were extensively studied. The results show that the reinforcement ceramic particles (WC) were uniformly distributed in the HEA matrix and a good metallurgical bonding layer between the reinforced phase WC and the HEA matrix were found. The maximum width of the bonding layer is about 330 nm. Under the strong irradiation of high-energy laser, WC was decomposed into W and C elements, and diffused into the HEA matrix. Its reaction with Co, Fe, Ni elements produced MxC (M = Co, Fe, Ni) carbides. Part of W and C elements were soluble in the HEA. The wear resistance of the printed composite is found affected by the content of added ceramic particle (WC). The ranking of the wear resistance of the printed composites was found to be WC0.05/HEA0.95 > HEA ≈ WC0.10/HEA0.90. The improvement of wear resistance by adding WC was found due to interfacial load transfer strengthening of WC particles, solution strengthening of W and C atoms; and the second phase strengthening of various carbides MxC (M = Co, Fe, Ni).

Abstract:In the present study, the Al7075 metal matrix composite was reinforced with different weight percentages (HEA content 0–8 wt%; interval of 2) of CoMoMnNiV high entropy alloy (HEA) was processed by an ultrasonic vibrator-coupled stir casting route. The mechanical alloying technique was employed to prepare high-entropy alloy metallic powder. The developed composite was examined for microstructural and mechanical behaviour. The phase evolution and microstructure of HEA particles and composites were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. An optical microscopic examination was carried out to investigate grain size and reinforcement dispersion over the matrix materials. The mechanical properties of composites improved significantly with HEAp content and attained maximum value for a composite with 6 wt% HEAp content. The hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the 6 wt% HEAp composite improved by 40% and 53%, respectively, as compared with as-cast Al7075 alloy.

Abstract:A cobalt-containing high-entropy alloy (HEA) system with varying tungsten content, CoCrFeNiW x ( x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 1.0), is studied, with the focus on the influence of tungsten content on the microstructural morphology, formation of strengthening phases, entropy, hardness and wear resistance of the HEA. The powders for fabricating the bulk specimens are prepared via mechanical alloying (MA), and the phase transformation behavior of the elemental powders during the MA process is investigated with XRD. It is found that the mixed elemental powders can be alloyed in the milling process. The MAed powders are subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis to determine the melting points and also to obtain cast-like bulk samples. The MAed CoCrFeNiW 0.2 powder is also consolidated via spark plasma sintering (SPS). The experimental results show that increasing W content can promote formation of strengthening phase and enhance entropy of CoCrFeNiW x HEA, thereby resulting in the increase of hardness. The SPS specimens have higher hardness than the bulk samples from the DSC tests. The SPS CoCrFeNiW 0.2 HEA exhibits comparable wear resistance to wear-resistant Stellite 6 and much better wear resistance than the cobalt-containing HEA, HE6, fabricated via the same processing route.

Abstract:A high entropy alloy (HEA, CrMnFeCoNi) was used as the binder for the densification of WC by gas pressure sintering. The HEAs content dependence of microstructure and mechanical properties of WC-Co cemented carbides (with varying Co content according to the HEA content) was investigated. The results show that a small amount of HEA addition (up to 5.0 wt%) can effectively improve the hardness and coercive force of cemented carbide to 92.7 HRA and 14.4 KA⋅m−1, but slightly decreases the fracture toughness. When the HEA content increases to 10.0 wt% (Co content is zero), the density and mechanical properties of the cemented carbide decreases greatly, and some cobalt lakes, pores and η-carbide appear in the microstructure. The measurements of vacuum sintered samples show that the low density and Co lake of partial sample are not caused by pressurized atmosphere, but are actually caused by the poor wettability of HEA and Mn elements. The analysis of the experimental results show that the gas pressure sintering can significantly improve the microstructure and comprehensive properties.

Abstract:The equiatomic CoCrFeNiTa high-entropy alloy (HEA) was prepared by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintered at different temperatures in this work. The microstructural evolution of alloy powder and microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered HEA were investigated. The results show that the particle size of HEA powder is decreased gradually with the increase of milling time and then tends to be unchanged basically. The composition of the HEA powder becomes uniform, and metastable face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and Laves phase with Co 2 Ta type are obtained eventually. The HEA sintered at 1100 °C exhibits a near-full density (99.15%). Supersaturated FCC and Laves phases with a grain size of 1.32 μ m and 1.26 μ m are formed in the HEA blocks, and many Ta 2 [Co, Cr, Fe] precipitates with a size of about 23 nm were observed in the FCC matrix. Mechanical properties were measured using Vickers hardness and uniaxial compression testing techniques. The HEA sintered at 1100 °C shows an ultra-high hardness of 9.37 GPa and compressive strength of 2177 MPa respectively. This is mainly ascribed to the combined effect of the grain refinement strengthening, solid solution strengthening, second phase strengthening including Laves phase and nano-sized precipitates. It provides a new way to prepare high strength and high hardness materials.

Abstract:A novel equiatomic FeCoCrMnW-based High Entropy Alloy system has been designed with the help of well-established thermodynamic parameters as well as a unique learning strategy based on multi-criteria decision-making tool named 'TOPSIS'. The present study describes the effect of W addition on as-cast FeCoCrMnWx HEAs on their phase identities and mechanical properties. The results showed that the as-cast FeCoCrMnWx (molar ratio x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) HEAs were composed of BCC, FCC and several minor Fe–Cr and Co–Cr type σ phases. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis confirms the formation of potentially-embrittling intermetallic phases in minor amounts. The designed HEAs exhibit desirable compressive fracture strength of 1771 MPa and compressive plasticity of 17.1% at room temperature. Hike in Vickers microhardness and compressive strength values could be attributed to a large atomic radius of 'W' which further plays a crucial role in grain refinement and solid solution strengthening. This work not only provides advancement in decision making studies of HEAs with new and essential perspectives but also reveals possibly concealed relationships amongst some critical belief in the field of material science.

Abstract:The CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy coatings (HEACs) with different weight ratios (10 and 30 wt.%) of WC additions have been prepared using mechanical alloying and a vacuum hot pressing sintering technique on a Q235 steel substrate. The microstructures, microhardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of HEACs were studied. The CoCrFeNi(WC) powders were obtained by mixing the CoCrFeNi HEA powders and WC particles. The sintered products of both HEACs with high relative density contained one solid solution phase with face-centered cubic structure, WC, and unknown precipitate phases. The transition boundary had a good metallurgical bonding with the coating and substrate. The average microhardness values of CoCrFeNi HEACs with 10 and 30 wt.% WC additions reached 475 and 531 HV respectively, which were far higher than that of the substrate (160 HV). Moreover, both coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the substrate under the same wear conditions. The 30 wt.% WC HEAC displayed the lower friction coefficient, and the shallower wear groove depth. The grain refinement strengthening and second-phase particle strengthening could be beneficial to the enhanced hardness and wear resistance of coatings with WC additions. The corrosion behavior of the tested samples in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were investigated using electrochemical polarization measurements. The CoCrFeNi(WC) coatings all revealed the improved corrosion resistance. Especially, a 10 wt.% WC addition remarkably enhanced the comprehensive corrosion resistance and easy passivation of CoCrFeNi HEAC.

Abstract:CoCrFeNiMn high entropy alloy (HEA) owns prominent strain hardening capacity and high tensile elongation but poor wear resistance. In present work, in-situ carbide/CoCrFeNiMn composites with excellent anti-wear properties were fabricated by a flake powder metallurgy route using graphene oxide (GO) and CoCrFeNiMn as original powders. As a result, the hard carbide phase, Cr 7 C 3 , is formed in the soft matrix via in-situ reaction at the GO/HEA interface, which leads to a dense distribution of small-sized Cr 7 C 3 and strong interfacial bonding of the composites. With the addition of 5 wt.% GO, the hardness is improved by 66.7% and the macroscopic wear rate is decreased by 78.3% as compared with CoCrFeNiMn HEA. Increased nano-scratch resistance indicates that the dense distribution of hard Cr 7 C 3 carbide and the strong Cr 7 C 3 -CoCrFeNiMn interfacial bonding play key roles to resist the plastic flow of the HEA matrix during friction and wear. This study may provide a pathway to improve the wear resistance of HEA for engineering applications.

Abstract:In this work, an in-situ CoCrFeNi-M6Cp high entropy-alloy (HEA) based hardmetal with a composition of Co25Cr21Fe18Ni23Mo7Nb3WC2 was fabricated by the powder metallurgy (PM) method. Microstructures and mechanical properties of this HEA were characterized and analyzed. The results exhibit that this HEA possesses a two-phase microstructure consisting of the face-centered cubic (FCC) matrix phase and the carbide M6C phase. This HEA has an average grain size of 2.2 μm, and the mean size and volume fraction of carbide particles are 1.2 μm and 20%. The tensile tests show that the alloy has a yield strength of 573 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 895 MPa and elongation of 5.5% at room temperature. The contributions from different strengthening mechanisms in this HEA were calculated. The grain boundary strengthening is the dominant strengthening mechanism, and the carbide particles are significant for the further enhancement of yield strength by the dislocation strengthening and Orowan strengthening. In addition, with increasing temperatures from 600 °C to 900 °C, the HEA shows a reduced yield strength (YS) from 473 MPa to 142 MPa, a decreased ultimate tensile strength (UTS) from 741 MPa to 165 MPa and an enhanced elongation from 10.5% to 31%.
