Abstract:Carbon sequestration technology offers a solution to mitigate excessive carbon dioxide emissions and sustainable development in the future. This study proposes a method for subsea carbon sequestration through the injection of cold seawater to promote CO2 hydrate formation. Using a self-developed simulator, we modeled and calculated the long-term sequestration process. The study focuses on analyzing the thermal regulation of the seabed following cold seawater injection, the multiphysical field evolution during CO2 injection and long-term sequestration, and the impact of seawater injection volumes on sequestration outcomes. The feasibility and leakage risks of this method were evaluated on a 100,000-year timescale. Results indicate that the injection of cold seawater significantly improves the pressure–temperature conditions of subsea sediments, facilitating early hydrate formation and markedly increasing the initial CO2 hydrate formation rate. Consequently, the distribution pattern of hydrate saturation changes, forming a double-layer hydrate shell. Over the long term, while cold seawater injection does not significantly reduce CO2 leakage, it does increase the safety margin between the hydrate layer and the seabed, enhancing the safety coefficient for long-term CO2 hydrate sequestration. Through detailed analysis of the behavior of CO2 components during sequestration, this study provides new theoretical insights into subsea CO2 hydrate storage.

Abstract:Hydrate-based CO2 sequestration is a novel approach that can not only realize permanent CO2 sequestration but can also form an artificial cap to prevent its upward migration. In this work, a self-developed large-scale 3D apparatus was employed to investigate hydrate formation characteristics in hydrate-based CO2 sequestration at a constant liquid CO2 injection rate through a vertical well for the first time. Temperature and pressure evolutions in the sediment were analyzed in detail. Key indicators, including cumulative sequestered CO2, CO2 in hydrate and liquid phases, the instantaneous hydrate conversion, and liquid CO2 retention rates, were calculated. The results show that hydrate continuously forms with increased CO2 injection and exhibits strong heterogeneity due to the variation in hydrate formation rate and quantity. Severe liquid CO2 heterogeneous figuring phenomena occur since hydrate deteriorates the effective pore structure and topology, resulting in relatively small cumulative sequestered CO2 when a large amount of CO2 is released from the outlet. Meanwhile, the instantaneous hydrate conversion and liquid CO2 retention rates have large fluctuations owing to water consumption and variation in the effective contact area between liquid CO2 and water. However, hydrate formation does not cause blockage of wellbore and formation nearby under given experimental conditions, which is beneficial for hydrate formation in deeper sediment. This study provides insights into hydrate formation and liquid CO2 immigration regularity during hydrate-based CO2 sequestration and demonstrates its feasibility at a field scale.

Abstract:CO2 sequestration technology is crucial for carbon capture and storage (CCS). This study explores the sequestration behavior of CO2 as a hydrate in depleted methane hydrate (MH)-bearing sediments. MH formation and dissociation, CO2 injection, and water injection processes are experimentally simulated using glass beads to evaluate the entire technological process. The effects of different parameters on CO2 hydrate formation are analyzed to evaluate hydrate-based CO2 sequestration technologies. The aqueous water distribution minimally changes during the gas hydrate formation and dissociation in this study. For all the cases considered, local hydrate formation channels are not generated at the axis or wall of the vessel during the CO2 injection process. The saturation of the CO2 hydrate and residual water after the CO2 hydrate formation is proportional to the initial reservoir water saturation. This is the first study to propose water injection to promote the formation of CO2 hydrates, which are beneficial for CO2 sequestration. The amount of injected water decreases as the CO2 hydrate saturation increases before the water injection. A qualitative analysis indicates increased formation of CO2 hydrates during the water injection and promotion of the CO2 sequestration.

Abstract:The current greenhouse effect caused by massive CO2 accumulation must be addressed urgently. Because of the ocean's enormous capacity, the high density of CO2 hydrate, and the high stability of CO2 sequestration in hydrate form, the process of hydrate generation can trap CO2 molecules into the lattice of water molecules and is considered for the sequestration of CO2 in hydrate form in the ocean. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to investigate the kinetic behavior of CO2 hydrate growth in ion-containing electrolyte solutions. The mechanism of salt ion effect on hydrate growth during pressure changes is investigated. The simulations show that in the presence of salt ions, the hydrate growth rate fluctuates significantly, despite the fact that a greater driving force can facilitate the hydrate growth process. Higher pressures increase guest molecule occupancy in the hydrate cage, while the saline environment causes competition for water molecules between the hydrate cage and salt ions, increasing the proportion of empty cages. Lower pressures and the presence of salt ions reduce CO2 molecules' selectivity for the smaller 512 cages, creating a barrier to hydrate growth. The findings of the study look at the microscopic mechanism of CO2 hydrate generation in seawater and serve as a guide for future implementation of hydrate method CO2 sequestration technology in the marine environment.

Abstract:The use of CH4/CO2 replacement from hydrate bearing sediments for CH4 recovery and CO2 storage is an alternative option to mitigate energy shortage and global warming. Fine marine sediments are highly attractive for abundant gas hydrate reserves and tremendous CO2 sequestration potential. However, the CH4/CO2 replacement regularity previously obtained from coarse sands may not be suitable for fine marine sediments because of their distinct differences in physical properties. In this study, fine natural marine sediments obtained from the South China Sea were used as porous media to investigate the CH4/CO2 replacement characteristics. The results indicated that the pressure and the temperature were the main controlling factors affecting the replacement efficiency. The content of initial methane hydrate and water in reservoir had a more significant effect on CO2 storage than CH4 recovery. The gas exchange kinetics in hydrates presented in fine marine sediments were significantly different from those in coarse grained sediments. CH4/CO2 replacement in fine marine sediment seemed to be inhibited by weak CO2 diffusion as peculiarities of the sediment including fine grain size, clay swelling and high proportion of bound water. According to the observed experimental results, the pressure and temperature conditions should be comprehensively optimized to enhance the mass transfer effect and improve economic benefits. This work provided greater insights into future marine NGH exploitation and contributed to carbon sequestration with applying CH4/CO2 replacement method.

Abstract:CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers is one of the most effective and promising choices to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions.Commercial scale CO2 injection projects and pilot scale field tests have demonstrated that it is technologically feasible.The state of the art and future challenges including CO2 trapping mechanism,capacity assessment technology,monitoring technology,safety assessment technology,and utilization technology are discussed based on the review of existing literatures.Hydrothermal experiment and numerical simulation in particular have proven to be very important methods to study the water-rock-CO2 interaction process and mechanism supported by field tests.Geophysical methods,seismic monitoring methods,in particular 4D,cross well and vertical seismic,could effectively detect the CO2 plume in reservoirs.However,they are unable to be widely applied due to the high cost,meanwhile geochemical methods(e.g.water chemistry and isotopes) could reflect reservoir responses in time after CO2 injection which is simple with low cost,and numerical simulation could provide the basis for CO2 plume migration.It is suggested that a set of multi-methods monitoring technology with easy operations should be established.Safe assessment technology includes numerical simulation,mechanical parameters testing,and establishment of various models;and further consideration of public acceptance and practical experience from large-scale CO2 storage projects need to be integrated for the improvement.Considering the high cost of CCS implementation,CO2 utilization should be encouraged and in particular,the CO2-EATER technology needs to be further discussed in order to improve waste geothermal water injectivity and sustainable development of geothermal resources.Technologies and methods of CO2 sequestration in marine saline formations develop very fast abroad,in the meantime most of the sedimentary basins in China that are suitable for CO2 sequestration are continental deposition with great differences in formation water and reservoir rock compositions and in this way,it is important and necessary to emphasis our specialty and focus when learning from experiences abroad.

Abstract:CCUS has been an important technological approach to mitigate global warming, and CO2 storage plays a key role in this process. The ocean is a huge potential carbon sink; therein, CO2 injected into subseabed sediments will form relatively stable CO2 hydrate under the appropriate conditions, which is expected to achieve long-term CO2 storage. Of special interest is that marine sediments are generally anisotropic in permeability; this would significantly affect the resulting storage behavior of CO2. In this study, by constructing a large-scale numerical model of CO2 storage in the South China Sea, we investigated the effect of permeability anisotropy on CO2 transport and transformation. The results show that the mass of CO2 stored in the free phase is higher than that in the hydrate phase during the CO2 storage process; the CO2 hydrate storage efficiency is larger in reservoirs with large permeability anisotropy values; the increase in Rhv expands the horizontal extent of the hydrate cap but restricts the hydrate volume in the vertical zone. In addition, the study proposed a double-layer CO2 injection method assisted by increasing the vertical pressure to improve the hydrate storage efficiency. These findings provide a scientific basis for CO2 storage in subseabed reservoirs with permeability anisotropy.

Abstract:CO2 storage in marine hydrates has a high gas storage capacity and long-term storage stability, which has attracted extensive research interest in the field of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction. The dependence of CO2 hydrate formation properties on the reservoir environment in high-efficiency storage methods should be examined to determine suitable hydrate-based techniques. In this study, the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique was employed to analyze the hydrate distribution and phase transition process. Hydrates form a solid phase, which results in the T2 relaxation time. The T2 curve in large pores shifts to the left. Several parameters, including the initial water saturation, CO2 formation pressure and temperature, and the application of chemical additives (SiO2 nanoparticles, SDS and their mixtures) were analyzed. A high initial water saturation and suitable temperatures and pressures in marine sediments were found to be conducive to high-efficiency CO2 storage. Regardless of the used additive, the bound water in relatively small pores remained almost unchanged, and the free-water content in large pores linearly decreased with increasing hydrate saturation. Compared to pure seawater, the optimal kinetics additive content was 0.15 wt% SiO2 nanoparticles in 8-hour tests, which improved the water conversion percentage, GHG migration and CO2 storage efficiency by 49.2%, 41.30% and 4.17%, respectively. These results provide greater insights into the hydrate-based CO2 storage in marine sediments and contribute to potential kinetic additive applications.

Abstract:Deep-sea cold seep is a natural phenomenon where methane leaks from the sea floor. Methane can be partially conversed through physical, chemical, and biological processes, but the excess methane that remains uncaptured escapes into the atmosphere and contributes to the greenhouse effect. Physical carbon sequestration via hydrate formation is a fast and high-energy density type of carbon sequestration; however, it has been largely overlooked. This study investigated hydrate formation in authigenic carbonate rocks through deep-sea geological surveys in cold seeps in the South China Sea. Investigations have shown that authigenic carbonate rocks can sequester carbon by blocking the methane plume from the seepage vents. This perspective provides a new physical carbon sequestration mode of carbonate rocks by observing the artificial collection of methane plumes in deep-sea seepage areas. The mode was simplified into two steps including the formation of a thin layer of planar hydrate film on carbonate rocks and a thick layer of hydrate through the stacking of bubbles under the thin film. Salinity, a key distinction between seawater and freshwater, was further investigated for its impact on the carbon sequestration mechanism. Results showed that saline ions in seawater had little impact on the thickening rate of the planar hydrate film but reduced the lateral growth rate of hydrates on the bubble by 60%. This reduction in the lateral growth rate greatly facilitated the three-dimensional growth, increased the hydrate thickness on the bubble, and improved the carbon sequestration efficiency. Hydrate formation on the exposed carbonate rock can effectively impede methane plume migration into upper water and atmosphere, mitigate the greenhouse effect, and present a promising strategy for carbon sequestration in deep-sea methane seepage areas.

Abstract:Sequestering CO 2 in depleted gas reservoirs using carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies has emerged as a viable strategy for mitigating global carbon emissions. However, CO 2 hydrate formation during injection processes is challenging and poses a risk to the operational integrity and efficiency of sequestration projects. This study investigated CO 2 hydrate formation dynamics within silica gel environments that closely mimicked the median pore size of natural sandstone reservoirs, particularly targeting depleted gas fields in the East Sea of Korea. Integrating kinetic insights into experimental hydrate formation assessments and molecular dynamics simulations provided a comprehensive understanding of the CO 2 hydrate formation mechanisms, as well as the formation dynamics and stability of the CO 2 hydrates. For example, the hydrate formation kinetics were significantly reduced in the small pores, suggesting the feasibility of implementing more economical hydrate inhibitor injection strategies during CO 2 injection. Moreover, this study evaluated the inhibitory effects of NaCl and methanol on CO 2 hydrate stability by accurately measuring the three-phase (H-L w -V) equilibria and employing silica gels (6 nm pore size). The presence of methanol and amorphous silica significantly impacted hydrate formation, with methanol potentially influencing the local structure around the hydrate phase and silica hindering hydrate growth through dynamic interactions with CO 2 molecules. In addition, we elucidated the complex interplay between CO 2 , water, and methanol (hydrate inhibitor) within the constrained environments of porous media, offering strategic insights for the development of effective CO 2 injection and sequestration strategies. Integrating molecular-level observations with real-world geological modeling presents a novel methodology for enhancing the safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability of carbon capture and storage operations. The findings of this study provide critical insights into hydrate phase behavior, highlighting the importance of precise equilibrium determination under simulated reservoir conditions to effectively anticipate and mitigate hydrate formation challenges.

Abstract:The safe and efficient production of marine natural gas hydrates faces the challenges of seabed geological risk issues. Geological risk issues can be categorized from weak to strong threats in four aspects: sand production, wellbore instability, seafloor subsidence, and submarine landslides, with the potential risk of natural gas leakage, and the geological risk problems that can cause secondary disasters dominated by gas eruptions and seawater intrusion. If the gas in a reservoir is not discharged in a smooth and timely manner during production, it can build up inside the formation to form super pore pressure leading to a sudden gas eruption when the overburden is damaged. There is a high risk of overburden destabilization around production wells, and reservoirs are prone to forming a connection with the seafloor resulting in seawater intrusion under osmotic pressure. This paper summarizes the application of field observation, experimental research, and numerical simulation methods in evaluating the stability problem of the seafloor surface. The theoretical model of multi-field coupling can be used to describe and evaluate the seafloor geologic risk issues during depressurization production, and the controlling equations accurately describing the characteristics of the reservoir are the key theoretical basis for evaluating the stability of the seafloor geomechanics. It is necessary to seek a balance between submarine formation stability and reservoir production efficiency in order to assess the optimal production and predict the region of plastic damage in the reservoir. Prediction and assessment allow measures to be taken at fixed points to improve reservoir mechanical stability with the numerical simulation method. Hydrate reservoirs need to be filled with gravel to enhance mechanical strength and permeability, and overburden need to be grouted to reinforce stability.

Abstract:The exploitation of unsealed marine hydrate deposits is of greater commercial value, but also more challenging because of the risks of the invading of huge body of sea water and subsidence of the seabed. In this work, we proposed a new method to recover natural gas from the usealed hydrate deposits saturated with water by pressure-retaining gas (CO2 + H2) injection. A series of experimental simulations was performed to prove its feasibility through establishing a highly simulated unsealed marine hydrate-bearing sediments system. The results demonstrated that overlying water invading was almost completely inhibited for the pressure-retaining approach while unimpeded for the simple depressrization process. Further, we designed a temporary depressurization process before gas injection to establish a flow field for gas in the sediments. This combined operation effectively enhanced the migration and spread of the injected gas, eventually increasing gas recovery ratio from 25% to 60% while the produced water/gas ratio remains as low as 12.6 ST kg/m3. Additionally, it is proved that the balance between CO2 sequestered and CH4 recovered could be achieved, which was an excellent support for reservoir stability. The combination method realized a higher CH4 concentration in the produced gas and a lower injection-production ratio, which greatly reduced the costs of gas injection and subsequent treatment of produced gas. For comparison, similar simulation work was also performed with respect to sealed gas-rich hydrate-bearing sediments. Overall, this temporary depressurization aided pressure-retaining gas injection approach is very promising for high efficient and safe exploitation of marine hydrtates.

Abstract:Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in solid hydrate state beneath seafloor is an attractive option for mitigating global warming. However, as a representative geological factor in marine sediment, clay mineral still plays an ambiguous role in hydrate depositional behaviors and reservoir structural evolution, which provides an obstacle to accurately assessing the potential and security of marine CO2 sequestration. In this work, spatiotemporal hydrate distribution and sedimentary structure evolution in the presence of two typical clay minerals with different structures and properties were investigated by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LNMR) technique. There was an inextricable interaction between clay-fluid migration and hydrate phase transition in porous sediments. Pore plugging owing to migration, agglomeration, and redeposition of unstable kaolinite (KIT) particles weakened final CO2 storage capacity by 10.3% and exacerbated heterogeneous hydrate distribution. CO2 storage capacity in montmorillonite (MMT) system was significantly improved with a water conversion of 82.7% for the high interaction potential between clay particles and favorable mass transfer conditions within the reservoir. However, clay minerals accelerated CO2 hydrate destabilization and disrupted the initial water distribution and pore structure. Migration of MMT fluid with high viscosity and gel property during hydrate phase transition resulted in a complex pore evolution and irreversible sedimentary skeleton deformation, providing an effective warning for site implementation of geological carbon sequestration. The findings expand the understanding of pore-scale interaction between clay minerals and gas hydrates, and provide valuable support for stratigraphic adaptability evaluation of CO2 sequestration in marine sediments.
Study on acoustic properties of hydrate-bearing sediments with reconstructed CO2 hydrate in different layers during CH4 hydrate mining

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate (NGH), a clean energy source with huge reserves in nature, and its safe and efficient exploitation fits perfectly with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-7). However, large-scale NGH decomposition frequently results in subsea landslides, reservoir subsidence, and collapse. In this work, in order to achieve safe and efficient exploitation of NGHs, the stability variation of different reservoir layers by depressurization/intermittent CO2/N2 injection (80:20 mol%, 50:50 mol%) was investigated using acoustic properties (P-wave velocity, elastic modulus), as well as reservoir subsidence under an overburden stress of 10 MPa. The P-wave velocity increased from 1282 m/s to 2778 m/s in the above-reservoir and from 1266 m/s to 2564 m/s in the below-reservoir, significantly increasing reservoir strength after CO2 hydrate formation. The P-wave velocity and elastic modulus in the top reconstructed reservoir were continually decreased by the shear damage of the overlying stress, while they remained stable in the bottom reconstructed reservoir during hydrate mining. However, due to superior pressure-bearing ability of the top CO2 hydrate reservoir, which was lacking in the bottom CO2 hydrate reservoir, the reservoir subsidence was relieved greatly. Despite the stiffness strength of reconstructed reservoir was ensured with CO2/N2 sweeping, the skeletal structure of CH4 hydrate reservoir was destroyed, and only the formation of CO2 hydrate could guarantee the stability of P-wave velocity and elastic modulus which was most beneficial to relieve reservoir subsidence. A large amount of CO2 was used in reservoir reconstruction and CH4 hydrate mining, which achieved the geological storage of CO2 (SDG-13). This work provided a new idea for safe and efficient NGHs mining in the future, and the application of acoustic properties served as a guide for the efficient construction of reconstructed reservoirs and offers credible technical assistance for safe exploitation of NGHs.

Abstract:Hydrate-based CO2 storage is considered a potentially effective way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing down global warming. Herein, the locations in the ocean and permafrost that meet the requirements for hydrate-based CO2 storage are summarized. Furthermore, research progress and shortcomings of hydrate-based CO2 storage are analyzed. The two main methods for hydrate-based CO2 storage are direct CO2 hydrate storage and CO2-CH4 hydrate replacement. Direct CO2 hydrate storage on the seabed and in the subsea (or permafrost) is proposed, and CO2 formation experiments on different scales are conducted. Various porous media are used to simulate the natural sediment and investigate the hydrate formation equilibrium and kinetics. CO2-CH4 replacement is preferred because it combines the benefits of CO2 storage and CH4 production. The hydrate equilibrium of different CO2-CH4 mixture hydrates is measured using different methods. Nuclear magnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopy are commonly used to study the hydrate structure characteristics and mass transfer properties. Macrokinetics are usually conducted in a high-pressure vessel to analyze the effects of the experimental conditions on the replacement results. Nevertheless, the replacement rate and hydrate properties should be investigated further.

Abstract:Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is the key option to achieve the global net-zero emission targets. In this direction, gas hydrate-based CO 2 sequestration in subsea sediments has gained significant attention due to its high storage capacity (∼3.5 m 3 of hydrate can store 1 tonne of CO 2 ) and long-term stability. Most of the literature data presents the CO 2 hydrate formation in deionized water or 3.5 wt% NaCl (saline water) and artificial sediments of silica sand. The understanding of the kinetics of hydrate formation in natural sediments and seawater remains crucial. Therefore, for further deployment of hydrate-based CCS, in this work, we investigate the CO 2 hydrate formation kinetics in Arabian Sea sediments and seawater using pure CO 2 and mixed CO 2 /N 2 gas mixture. The experiments were performed in the presence and absence of biocompatible kinetic promoters (amino acids) at the operating pressure ranging from 3.0 to 7.0 MPa and ∼ 274.5 K temperature. This work offers important insights into the deployment of hydrate-based CCS in Arabian sea sediments.
