Abstract:Focusing on the national strategic goal of "Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality", this paper comprehensively analyzes the strategic conditions and targets suitable for large-scale CO 2 geo-storage in the China offshore basins, from the perspectives of fault activity, basin pressure, tectonic subsidence, seismicity, and geothermal gradient. It is considered that the East China Sea Shelf Basin, Pearl River Mouth Basin, eastern Qiongdongnan Basin, and the central South China Sea basin are the best geological storage areas for CO 2 , although this does not exclude suitable targets in other unfavorable sedimentary basins since a specific geo-sequestration target is small in area. The suitable CO 2 storage strata in the East China Sea Shelf, Pearl River Mouth, and Qiongdongnan Basins include the bottom salt-water layer of the late rapid subsidence sediments in the open-sea environment and the hydrocarbon-bearing units in the thermal subsidence sedimentary sequences. Between 800 and 4000 m depths beneath the seafloor, the porosity is greater than 10%, and the hydrostatic and lithostatic pressures vary from ～ 8 to ～ 40 MPa and from ～ 13 to ～ 83 MPa, respectively. In this pressure and suitable geothermal gradient ranges, CO 2 exists in a supercritical state, and its density is relatively stable with temperature and pressure changes, which is beneficial to the flow and permeation of CO 2 . The scale and number of mafic magmatic rock formations in the basins also provide good conditions for CO 2 geological sequestration and permanent mineralization. Although operationally difficult and expensive, CO 2 storage in the central South China Sea basin is very safe. CO 2 injected deep into the oceanic basalt can undergo basalt mineralization, but if CO 2 is escaped as the mineralization process is relatively slow, escaped CO 2 can be further trapped by multiple other storage processes,including pyroclastic rock mineralization, seafloor sediment sequestration, seabed sediment CO 2 hydrate storage,carbonate neutralization reaction, seabed carbon lake, ocean dissolution, etc. The existing six International Oceanic Discovery Program（IODP） boreholes that have encountered basement basalt in the central basin of the South China Sea can provide a good scientific and engineering foundation for the pilot CO 2 storage experiment in the South China Sea basin.

Abstract:Carbon sequestration technology offers a solution to mitigate excessive carbon dioxide emissions and sustainable development in the future. This study proposes a method for subsea carbon sequestration through the injection of cold seawater to promote CO2 hydrate formation. Using a self-developed simulator, we modeled and calculated the long-term sequestration process. The study focuses on analyzing the thermal regulation of the seabed following cold seawater injection, the multiphysical field evolution during CO2 injection and long-term sequestration, and the impact of seawater injection volumes on sequestration outcomes. The feasibility and leakage risks of this method were evaluated on a 100,000-year timescale. Results indicate that the injection of cold seawater significantly improves the pressure–temperature conditions of subsea sediments, facilitating early hydrate formation and markedly increasing the initial CO2 hydrate formation rate. Consequently, the distribution pattern of hydrate saturation changes, forming a double-layer hydrate shell. Over the long term, while cold seawater injection does not significantly reduce CO2 leakage, it does increase the safety margin between the hydrate layer and the seabed, enhancing the safety coefficient for long-term CO2 hydrate sequestration. Through detailed analysis of the behavior of CO2 components during sequestration, this study provides new theoretical insights into subsea CO2 hydrate storage.

Abstract:CCUS has been an important technological approach to mitigate global warming, and CO2 storage plays a key role in this process. The ocean is a huge potential carbon sink; therein, CO2 injected into subseabed sediments will form relatively stable CO2 hydrate under the appropriate conditions, which is expected to achieve long-term CO2 storage. Of special interest is that marine sediments are generally anisotropic in permeability; this would significantly affect the resulting storage behavior of CO2. In this study, by constructing a large-scale numerical model of CO2 storage in the South China Sea, we investigated the effect of permeability anisotropy on CO2 transport and transformation. The results show that the mass of CO2 stored in the free phase is higher than that in the hydrate phase during the CO2 storage process; the CO2 hydrate storage efficiency is larger in reservoirs with large permeability anisotropy values; the increase in Rhv expands the horizontal extent of the hydrate cap but restricts the hydrate volume in the vertical zone. In addition, the study proposed a double-layer CO2 injection method assisted by increasing the vertical pressure to improve the hydrate storage efficiency. These findings provide a scientific basis for CO2 storage in subseabed reservoirs with permeability anisotropy.

Abstract:CO 2 geological storage is a critical component of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology, and a key technical path towards achieving carbon neutrality. This study offers a comprehensive review of the theoretical and technical methods of onshore geological CO 2 storage, and highlights that current CO 2 terrestrial storage demonstration projects primarily focus on the traditional oil and gas reservoir collaborative flooding technology. Simultaneously, global CO 2 geological storage projects have begun to accelerate the development of deep saline aquifers storage and large-scale clustering in the direction of tens of millions of tons. In comparison to land-based sites, marine carbon sequestration sites possess greater storage potential, and are gradually emerging as the primary battlefield for carbon sequestration in the future due to their distance from aquifers and associated low risk. Storage in deep saline aquifers at marine area is the primary research focus in carbon sequestration, while the storage of submarine basalt mineralization holds great potential. The storage of CO 2 in the form of solid hydrate within appropriate seabed sediment environments or the formation of artificial CO 2 hydrate cap layer is conducive to the safe and efficient development of natural gas hydrate resources, and has emerged as a new hot research topic. In the future, the focus of CO 2 geological storage should be on the fine assessment and regional optimization of carbon storage potential, the implementation of demonstration projects of the entire marine geological carbon storage process encompassing capture, transportation, injection and geophysical monitoring, and the establishment of an intelligent, real-time, and professional database integrating geological, engineering and environmental aspects of carbon storage. This study holds significant relevance in accurately identifying the future technical research direction of CO 2 geological carbon sequestration, fostering technological advancements and innovations in carbon sequestration, and propelling the leapfrog development of CO 2 carbon sequestration in the submarine areas.

Abstract:Hydrate-based CO2 sequestration is a novel approach that can not only realize permanent CO2 sequestration but can also form an artificial cap to prevent its upward migration. In this work, a self-developed large-scale 3D apparatus was employed to investigate hydrate formation characteristics in hydrate-based CO2 sequestration at a constant liquid CO2 injection rate through a vertical well for the first time. Temperature and pressure evolutions in the sediment were analyzed in detail. Key indicators, including cumulative sequestered CO2, CO2 in hydrate and liquid phases, the instantaneous hydrate conversion, and liquid CO2 retention rates, were calculated. The results show that hydrate continuously forms with increased CO2 injection and exhibits strong heterogeneity due to the variation in hydrate formation rate and quantity. Severe liquid CO2 heterogeneous figuring phenomena occur since hydrate deteriorates the effective pore structure and topology, resulting in relatively small cumulative sequestered CO2 when a large amount of CO2 is released from the outlet. Meanwhile, the instantaneous hydrate conversion and liquid CO2 retention rates have large fluctuations owing to water consumption and variation in the effective contact area between liquid CO2 and water. However, hydrate formation does not cause blockage of wellbore and formation nearby under given experimental conditions, which is beneficial for hydrate formation in deeper sediment. This study provides insights into hydrate formation and liquid CO2 immigration regularity during hydrate-based CO2 sequestration and demonstrates its feasibility at a field scale.

Abstract:The increasing global focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) has highlighted the potential for offshore CO2 sequestration, particularly following recent successes in onshore projects. This research investigates the qualitative analysis of carbon trapping efficiency in offshore basins, employing a GEM simulator to incorporate factors such as aqueous solubility and geochemistry. The findings reveal that anticlines represent ideal geological structures for carbon storage, effectively trapping a significant portion of injected CO2. For effective mineralization, it is crucial to dissolve CO2 into saline aquifers to generate H+, which facilitates the release of Ca2+ and Al3+ from anorthite. This process leads to the dissolution of anorthite and the precipitation of kaolinite, while calcite transitions from a dissolved state to a precipitated state over time. The analysis indicates that structural trapping provides the highest storage contribution during the injection phase, whereas residual gas trapping becomes dominant by the end of the simulation. Notably, it is observed that the storage contribution of structural trapping decreases from 28.39% to 19.05%, and the percentage increase in storage contributions of residual gas, solubility, ionic, and mineral trapping are 4.12%, 3.25%, 1.69%, and 0.28% for CO2 plus water injection, thereby improving the long-term security of CO2 storage in offshore basins. It is most beneficial to optimize the layout and design of the injection well to ensure a uniform distribution of carbon dioxide and to increase the injection rate.

Abstract:Permanent storage in suitable geological sites and/or deep aquifers is emerging as the most concrete and effective solution to mitigate its increasing concentration in the atmosphere. This article experimentally investigated its storage in deep marine environments in the form of hydrates. Gas hydrates were formed into a small-scale reactor, designed to reproduce marine seafloors. Hydrates were formed with pure carbon dioxide and with CO2-based gaseous mixture containing nitrogen at different concentrations, equal, respectively, to 30, 50 and 60 vol%. The results obtained for each mixture were then compared to each other. In particular, the quantity of hydrates formed was evaluated as a function of the thermodynamic conditions selected for the experiments. The energy spent for the process, calculated by considering the cooling and compression phases, was calculated for the unit quantity of hydrates formed and for the unit quantity of carbon dioxide stored. Finally, the energy requirements for gas cooling and for gas compression were calculated separately in order to comprehend the contribution of the single process for each mixture.

Abstract:CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers is one of the most effective and promising choices to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions.Commercial scale CO2 injection projects and pilot scale field tests have demonstrated that it is technologically feasible.The state of the art and future challenges including CO2 trapping mechanism,capacity assessment technology,monitoring technology,safety assessment technology,and utilization technology are discussed based on the review of existing literatures.Hydrothermal experiment and numerical simulation in particular have proven to be very important methods to study the water-rock-CO2 interaction process and mechanism supported by field tests.Geophysical methods,seismic monitoring methods,in particular 4D,cross well and vertical seismic,could effectively detect the CO2 plume in reservoirs.However,they are unable to be widely applied due to the high cost,meanwhile geochemical methods(e.g.water chemistry and isotopes) could reflect reservoir responses in time after CO2 injection which is simple with low cost,and numerical simulation could provide the basis for CO2 plume migration.It is suggested that a set of multi-methods monitoring technology with easy operations should be established.Safe assessment technology includes numerical simulation,mechanical parameters testing,and establishment of various models;and further consideration of public acceptance and practical experience from large-scale CO2 storage projects need to be integrated for the improvement.Considering the high cost of CCS implementation,CO2 utilization should be encouraged and in particular,the CO2-EATER technology needs to be further discussed in order to improve waste geothermal water injectivity and sustainable development of geothermal resources.Technologies and methods of CO2 sequestration in marine saline formations develop very fast abroad,in the meantime most of the sedimentary basins in China that are suitable for CO2 sequestration are continental deposition with great differences in formation water and reservoir rock compositions and in this way,it is important and necessary to emphasis our specialty and focus when learning from experiences abroad.

Abstract:The net increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion contributes significantly to the global warming and climate change. CO2 capture and storage (CCS) in geological formations, specifically in deep saline aquifers, is among the very promising strategies to control and mitigate emissions into the atmosphere. Injection of CO2 into a reservoir may result in the formation of pore pressure which can initiate cracks and trigger fault activities. CO2 may leak into the atmosphere and invade shallow groundwater sources. Release of CO2 into the atmosphere has enormous effects on the environment and significantly contributes to global climate change. Therefore, storage safety, injection efficiency, and monitoring remain crucially important considerations in CO2 injection. This study attempts to establish an optimal CO2 injection strategy that aims at enhancing CO2 storage with an increased safety at Ordos basin. Furthermore, it establishes the safety limits of CO2 plume migration from the central axis of the injection well. In the investigation, injection parameters such as injection rate and bottom hole pressure were analyzed. The CO2 plume migration analysis was performed, and migration limits were determined. Simulation results revealed that different formation layers have varying storage capacities and pressure withstanding ability. The site maximum storage rate goal of storing 100,000 t of CO2 per year was attained. It is advised to perform injection at the Majiagou layer due to sufficient storage capacity and greater depth of over 2400 m from the surface. This study recommends that an optimum CO2 sequestration strategy which does not result into excessive migration of injected CO2 plume and limit formation pressure buildup should be adopted. Therefore, deep underground storage at an average depth of above 2400 m is optimum, because it has an adequate storage space to accommodate the desired rate of 100,000 t/year. Besides, its geological settings favor storage safety in the event of significant uplift that may cause induced seismicity. Furthermore, it will also limit CO2 plume that may come into contact with shallow groundwater sources. Likewise, investing in low carbon and carbon-free energy technologies and enhancement of energy efficiency systems around the site is also recommended.

Abstract:Rapid implementation of global scale carbon capture and storage is required to limit temperature rises to 1.5 °C this century. Depleted oilfields provide an immediate option for storage, since injection infrastructure is in place and there is an economic benefit from enhanced oil recovery. To design secure storage, we need to understand how the fluids are configured in the microscopic pore spaces of the reservoir rock. We use high-resolution X-ray imaging to study the flow of oil, water and CO 2 in an oil-wet rock at subsurface conditions of high temperature and pressure. We show that contrary to conventional understanding, CO 2 does not reside in the largest pores, which would facilitate its escape, but instead occupies smaller pores or is present in layers in the corners of the pore space. The CO 2 flow is restricted by a factor of ten, compared to if it occupied the larger pores. This shows that CO 2 injection in oilfields provides secure storage with limited recycling of gas; the injection of large amounts of water to capillary trap the CO 2 is unnecessary.

Abstract:Decisive steps in innovation and competitiveness are needed to meet global greenhouse gas emissions and climate goals. As an effective method for reducing carbon emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) storage and utilization on the seabed enable the transport of captured CO2 via pipelines or ships to permanent storage sites, such as saline aquifers or depleted oil and gas reservoirs in subsea sediments, or by injecting CO2 for the replacement and displacement of subsea resources (oil, gas, gas hydrates, etc.). Subsea CO2 utilization and storage (SCUS) involves several research hotspots worldwide, including international and local laws and regulations, security, economics, environmental impact, and public acceptance. Its current research and engineering progress are also of great interest. In addition, the vigorous implementation of the energy transition and the rapid development of renewable energy sources globally have resulted in significant advancements in SCUS. This paper provides an overview of carbon dioxide storage and utilization mechanism in the seabed, analyzes key technical and economic issues, and summarizes existing research on safety risks, monitoring technologies, and investment and operating cost control to identify remaining knowledge gaps. This is followed by an overview of global engineering practice to update on current progress. Finally, combined with the actualities of China, the potential and trend of China's seabed carbon storage and utilization are summarized. This review demonstrates the enormous development prospects for seabed carbon storage and utilization, although some risks remain including leakage and contamination, with which innovation in monitoring technologies and the self-sealing effect of gas hydrate, safe subsea utilization and storage of CO2 can be achieved. Additionally, considering the development of renewable energy and the demand for large-scale energy storage, hydrogen, ammonia, or other energy carriers and carbon dioxide storage and utilization can be coupled into an industrial chain to form an economically competitive carbon geological storage mode.
CO2 geological storage: Critical insights on plume dynamics and storage efficiency during long-term injection and post-injection periods

Abstract:In the quest for net-zero greenhouse gas emission, CO2 capture and storage technologies play a prominent role. Estimates suggest a potential of sequestering up to several thousand metric gigatons of CO2. However, some of the main challenges in its development are an assessment of reservoir-specific storage capacities due to variabilities and heterogeneities in the underlying properties (structure, formations, facies, petrophysics, reservoir architecture, and others) and understanding the migration of CO2 in the subsurface.This article critically investigates CO2 plume characteristics and determines the evolving contributions of different trapping mechanisms during a 100-year injection and 200-year post-injection periods. CO2 can reside in various forms in saline aquifers. To account for these, we characterized CO2 plumes in multiple ways based on dissolved CO2 in the aqueous phase, free phase CO2, pH change, and finally, change in solid-phase saturation (due to precipitation and dissolution of salts and calcite). Based on how we define the plumes, the sizes, and the shapes of the plumes differ. Emphasis is on the characterization of the plume, its evolution, and the contributing trapping mechanisms. Additionally, we ascertain the impact of various uncertain variables, including heterogeneity and anisotropy in geological formation properties, reservoir-brine composition, and molecular diffusion on CO2 plume dynamics and storage via statistical Design of Experiments.Simulation results indicate that lateral propagation of the CO2 plume is much larger than vertical dispersion typically attributed to the presence of flow baffles and vertical stratification. The ratio of average lateral to vertical propagation ranged between 7 and 44. In general, various geometries and growth patterns evolved for the CO2 plume and are strongly influenced by the total amount of CO2 injected and the permeability directional anisotropies. On average, for all case scenarios investigated, free phase CO2 is the dominant trapping mechanism (in terms of the amount of CO2 stored) during the injection period, storing up to 60% of the CO2 injected. Both residual (20%) and solubility (16%) trapping storage ratios exhibited higher storage with time than structural trapping (10%). Effectively little mineral trapping transpires during the 100-year injection period. Another important observation is the fact that facies-dependency on saturation functions appears to have a substantial effect on different trapping mechanisms. Shale-dominant facies manifests more residual trapping than other facies.

Carbon Capture and Storage for Long-Term and Safe Sealing with Constrained Natural CO2 Analogs

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage for long-term sealing is one of the most promising approaches to mitigate global climate change. However, maximum capture amount and long-term safety of carbon dioxide storage in geological scenarios must be ensured. A case of a natural CO2 storage analog of the Huangqiao CO2-oil reservoir in the northern Jiangsu Basin, eastern China, is presented that can safely preserve carbon for millions of years, despite the mantle CO2-rich fluid having substantially altered the sandstone reservoirs. The calcite in the sandstone was significantly reduced by dissolution, thereby improving the CO2 storage capacity. Meanwhile, the mantle CO2-rich fluid advanced the precipitated calcite cement in the fractures of the mudstone caprock as it migrated upward, serving to self-seal the fractures and enhance the sealing capacity of CO2 storage. We numerically simulated artificial CO2 injection for 30 years in the depleted oil reservoir of Jurong near the Huangqiao CO2-oil reservoir; the maximum amount of CO2 injected into a single well can reach 5.43 x 106 t and increase the formation pressure by up to 95 bar. After injection, the saturation of gas-phase CO2 did not decrease remarkably over the following 300 years. No projected rapid CO2 leaked through fractures, owing to the selfsealing of fractures through calcite cement. This suggests that the depleted petroleum reservoir with an assemblage of sandstone reservoirs and overlying mudstone caprocks could be suitable for long-term and safe carbon capture and storage in geological formations.

Abstract:Abstract The saline aquifer is the most reliable place where anthropogenic carbon dioxide gas storage has shown a promising future. This paper evaluates and predicts the capacities of different carbon dioxide storage trapping mechanisms in storing carbon dioxide gas in low porosity and permeability deep saline aquifers by using commercial reservoir simulator software i.e., Computer modeling group (CMG). Four carbon dioxide storage trapping modeled and simulated were structural or stratigraphic trapping mechanisms, residual trapping mechanisms, solubility trapping mechanisms, and mineral trapping mechanisms. Carbon dioxide gas was injected into a deep saline aquifer for 15 years, followed by 833 years of post-injection. To reflect the real field reality and have a reasonable approximation of the amount of carbon dioxide which can be stored in an aquifer, this paper included water vaporization effects that occur during carbon dioxide injection and water injection operations so as to optimize residual and solubility trapping mechanisms as the most important trapping mechanisms. Furthermore, the effects of different important parameters such as salinity, vertical-to-horizontal permeability ratio, injection rate, bottom hole pressure, and temperature on each carbon dioxide trapping mechanism were analyzed. Results revealed that each carbon dioxide trapping mechanism has a different capacity for storing carbon dioxide and could be either affected linearly or nonlinearly with various parameters. Higher aquifer temperatures are not recommended for carbon dioxide storage because most of the carbon dioxide gas is stored as free gas, which increases the risk of leakage in case of mechanical failure or imbalance. Excess salinity is the only factor that reduces aquifer storage capacity. Furthermore, it was found that an aquifer with a lower vertical-to-horizontal permeability ratio is recommended for carbon dioxide storage because it increases carbon dioxide stored in an immobile phase, which avoids risk leakages. There was an increase of 43.2% and a decrease of 16.84% for minimum and maximum vertical-to-horizontal permeability (kv/kh) ratios, respectively, compared to the base for residual trapping mechanisms. Also, there was a decrease of carbon dioxide dissolved by 19% at maximum kv/kh ratios and an increase of 58% at minimum kv/kh ratios, compared to the base case. Further, there was an increase of carbon dioxide trapped by 96.4% and dissolved by 97% when water was injected at a higher rate compared to the base case (no water injection). Thus, a high injection rate is suggested to enhance residual and solubility trapping mechanisms. It is recommended that the carbon dioxide injection rate and bottom hole pressure be kept at optimal levels to avoid mechanical failure due to aquifer pressures building up, which can increase the risk of leakages and must be monitored and controlled at the surface using pressure gauges or sensor technology.

Abstract:The injection of CO 2 into geological formations triggers inherently coupled thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical processes. The reservoir pressure and temperature determine the CO 2 density, the CO 2 -water interfacial tension, and the solubility of CO 2 in water (hindered by salts and competing gases). The CO 2 -water interface experiences marked pinning onto mineral surfaces, and contact angles can range from the asymptotic advancing to receding values, in contrast to the single contact angle predicted by Young's equation. CO 2 dissolves in water to form carbonic acid and the acidified water dissolves minerals; mineral dissolution enhances porosity and permeability, triggers settlement, may couple with advection to form "wormholes", produces stress changes and may cause block sliding and shear bands. Convective currents can emerge beneath the CO 2 plume and sustain CO 2 and mineral dissolution processes. On the other hand, mineralization is a self-homogenizing process in advective regimes. The crystallization pressure can exceed the tensile capacity of the host rock and create new surfaces or form grain-displacive lenses. Within the rock matrix, coupled reactive-diffusion-precipitation results in periodic precipitation bands. Adequate seal rocks for CO 2 geological storage must be able to sustain the excess capillary pressure in the buoyant CO 2 plume without experiencing open-mode discontinuities or weakening physico-chemical interactions. CO 2 injection into depleted oil reservoirs benefits from time-proven seals; in addition, CO 2 can mobilize residual oil to simultaneously recover additional oil through oil swelling, ganglia destabilization, the reduction in oil viscosity and even miscible displacement. Rapid CO 2 depressurization near the injection well causes cooling under most anticipated reservoir conditions; cooling can trigger hydrate and ice formation, and reduce permeability. In some cases, effective stress changes associated with the injection pressure and cooling thermoelasticity can reactivate fractures. All forms of carbon geological storage will require large reservoir volumes to hold a meaningful fraction of the CO 2 that will be emitted during the energy transition.

Abstract:CO2 sequestration technology is crucial for carbon capture and storage (CCS). This study explores the sequestration behavior of CO2 as a hydrate in depleted methane hydrate (MH)-bearing sediments. MH formation and dissociation, CO2 injection, and water injection processes are experimentally simulated using glass beads to evaluate the entire technological process. The effects of different parameters on CO2 hydrate formation are analyzed to evaluate hydrate-based CO2 sequestration technologies. The aqueous water distribution minimally changes during the gas hydrate formation and dissociation in this study. For all the cases considered, local hydrate formation channels are not generated at the axis or wall of the vessel during the CO2 injection process. The saturation of the CO2 hydrate and residual water after the CO2 hydrate formation is proportional to the initial reservoir water saturation. This is the first study to propose water injection to promote the formation of CO2 hydrates, which are beneficial for CO2 sequestration. The amount of injected water decreases as the CO2 hydrate saturation increases before the water injection. A qualitative analysis indicates increased formation of CO2 hydrates during the water injection and promotion of the CO2 sequestration.

Abstract:[Formula: see text] capture and sequestration is a promising approach to reduce carbon emission and mitigate the greenhouse effect. We have developed a methodology combining reservoir simulation, rock-physics theory, and seismic modeling to simulate the [Formula: see text] sequestration and monitoring process, based on an idealized geologic model of the Sleipner field. First, we simulated a constant-rate [Formula: see text] injection into the idealized geologic model to study the basics of the two-phase flow involved in [Formula: see text] sequestration. The main features of the [Formula: see text] plume evolution and pressure build-up are captured in the simulation results. In any [Formula: see text] sequestration project, an important part is monitoring [Formula: see text] distribution using seismic methods. The seismic response of the injected [Formula: see text] is controlled by its effect on elastic properties of the reservoir rock. We built a rock-physics model to assess the effect of [Formula: see text] on wave properties. For unconsolidated sand, a sensitivity study found that [Formula: see text] saturation and effective pressure can strongly affect wave properties. Based on the reservoir simulation results and the rock-physics model, seismic modeling is performed at different stages of the injection using the symplectic stereomodeling method. The synthetic seismograms found that the seismic responses of the reservoir are strongly affected by the saturation and pressure change induced by the injection of [Formula: see text], and the seismic response of [Formula: see text] is strong enough to be resolved from seismic data.

Abstract:This review paper considers direct injection of industrial CO2 emissions into the mid-water oceanic column below 500 m depth. Such a process is a potential candidate for switching atmospheric carbon emissions directly to long term sequestration, thereby relieving the intermediate atmospheric burden. Given sufficient research justification, the argument is that harmful impact in both the Atmosphere and the biologically rich upper marine layer could be reduced. The paper aims to estimate the role that active intervention, through direct ocean CO2 storage, could play and to outline further research and assessment for the strategy to be a viable option for climate change mitigation. The attractiveness of direct ocean injection lies in its bypassing of the Atmosphere and upper marine region, its relative permanence, its practicability using existing technologies and its quantification. The difficulties relate to the uncertainty of some fundamental scientific issues, such as plume dynamics, lowered pH of the exposed waters and associated ecological impact, the significant energy penalty associated with the necessary engineering plant and the uncertain costs. Moreover, there are considerable uncertainties regarding related international marine law. Development of the process would require acceptance of the evidence for climate change, strict requirements for large industrial consumers of fossil fuel to reduce CO2 emissions into the Atmosphere and scientific evidence for the overall beneficial impact of ocean sequestration.
