Abstract:The southeastern coastal areas of China are often attacked by hurricanes,and the resulting flash flood increases the risk of dam breaking.Moreover,the downstream areas of the reservoirs are often low-lying and easily flooded,which may affect the dam-break flood routing.Considering the initial water depth in the downstream areas,a two-dimensional dam-break flood model was proposed.The numerical computation method,classification of flood damage and method for determining the loss rates were discussed,and a dam-break flood loss assessment model was set up.The model was applied to evaluate the dam-break flood damage in Xupu River basin based on the determination of the relations between the loss rates and the submergence level.The result shows that the dam-break flood may cause 8.3 billion pecuniary loss and serious social and ecological environment damage to the reservoir downstream areas.If an effective precaution is launched,the casualty and pecuniary loss can be reduced significantly.The dam-break flood loss assessment not only helps improve the reservoir safety management,but also makes foundations for flood control and hedging plan.
Comparative Analysis and Risk Assessment of Dam-Break Floods: Taking Pingshuijiang Reservoir As an Example

Abstract:Due to the huge potential energy associated with water storage in reservoirs, dam-break floods are often catastrophically destructive for people and structures downstream. This study aims to simulate and compare floods generated under various dam-break scenarios and their downstream impacts, taking Pingshuijiang Reservoir in southeastern China as an example. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model is used to simulate the downstream evolution of floods under three dam-break scenarios, and the breach flood and downstream inundation process are analyzed. Gradual failure of the main dam leads to near-total inundation of the nearby town over c. 1 h, allowing time for warning and evacuation. Instantaneous failure of the main dam results in larger peak flow, greater submergence depth and faster inundation (20 min), leaving little time for warning/evacuation. Instantaneous failure of the auxiliary dam generates a much lower peak flow magnitude and, although the town is still largely submerged within 45 min, the shallow water depth and low velocity are conducive to rescue/evacuation. The results show significant variation in flood process and submergence due to dam size and failure mode that provide guidance for dam-break flood risk assessment and disaster avoidance planning.

Abstract:Reservoirs play an important role in the urban water supply, yet reservoirs receive an influx of large amounts of pollutants from the upper watershed during flood seasons, causing a decline in water quality and threatening the water supply. Identifying major pollution sources and assessing water quality risks are important for the environmental protection of reservoirs. In this paper, the principal component/factor analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA/FA-MLR) model and Bayesian networks (BNs) are integrated to identify water pollution sources and assess the water quality risk in different precipitation conditions, which provides an effective framework for water quality management during flood seasons. The deterioration of the water quality of rivers in the flood season is found to be the main reason for the deterioration in the reservoir water quality. The nonpoint source pollution is the major pollution source of the reservoir, which contributes 53.20%, 48.41%, 72.69%, and 68.06% of the total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP), fecal coliforms (F.coli), and turbidity (TUB), respectively. The risk of the water quality parameters exceeding the surface water standard under different hydrological conditions is assessed. The results show that the probability of the exceedance rate of TN, TP, and F.coli increases from 91.13%, 3.40%, and 3.34%, to 95.75%, 25.77%, and 12.76% as the monthly rainfall increases from ≤68.25 mm to >190.18 mm. The risk to the water quality of the Biliuhe River reservoir is found to increase with the rising rainfall intensity, the water quality risk at the inlet during the flood season is found to be much greater than that at the dam site, and the increasing trend of TP and turbidity is greater than that of TN and F.coli. The risk of five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) does not increase with increasing precipitation, indicating that it is less affected by nonpoint source pollution. The results of this study can provide a research basis for water environment management during flood seasons.

Abstract:Evaluation of dike-break-induced flood risk has been a world-wide concern due to its enormous economic, environmental and societal importance. The mitigation of flood risk in detention basins is a complex decision-making process that could span multiple engineering and scientific disciplines. In this paper, an integrated dike-break-induced flood modelling, analysis and management framework is proposed. The MIKE21-based numerical approach is first developed to model the flood routing process in detention basins. With the physical behavior of the flood well understood, physics-informed quantitative approaches are proposed to better assess the dike-break-induced flood risks, e.g. human life, economic and environmental losses, offering valuable information for engineers and policymakers to formulate targeted contingency plans. The Zhuhu detention basin in the Poyang Lake district in China is investigated using the proposed framework. The flood movement in the detention basin is first numerically simulated using the proposed MIKE21-based model. Based on the results, i.e., inundation area, water depth, flow velocity and arrival time of flood peak, the detention basin are divided into several flood disaster zones. The induced flood risks are then estimated for the different zones. Customized emergency evacuation plans are also formulated for these different flood disaster zones. The study of the Zhuhu detention basin confirms that the proposed framework effectively fuses numerical modelling, physics-informed analysis and management of flood events, providing an integrated decision-making process for flood warning and risk mitigation in flood detention basins or at other places.

Abstract:A real-time, dynamic, early-warning model (EP-risk model) is proposed to cope with sudden water quality pollution accidents affecting downstream areas with raw-water intakes (denoted as EPs). The EP-risk model outputs the risk level of water pollution at the EP by calculating the likelihood of pollution and evaluating the impact of pollution. A generalized form of the EP-risk model for river pollution accidents based on Monte Carlo simulation, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, and the risk matrix method is proposed. The likelihood of water pollution at the EP is calculated by the Monte Carlo method, which is used for uncertainty analysis of pollutants' transport in rivers. The impact of water pollution at the EP is evaluated by expert knowledge and the results of Monte Carlo simulation based on the analytic hierarchy process. The final risk level of water pollution at the EP is determined by the risk matrix method. A case study of the proposed method is illustrated with a phenol spill accident in China.

Risk Assessment Method of Non-point Source Pollution Output for Watershed Using High Resolution Data

Abstract:In recent years, non-point source pollution has become the main cause of water quality deterioration in some reservoirs in China. Taking the Panjiakou Reservoir as an example, the classical output risk model was improved by introducing a precipitation factor and terrain factor. Combined with high-resolution satellite precipitation products (GPM) and GF-6 satellite images, a high-resolution data-driven risk assessment method for non-point source pollution output was established to study the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of non-point source pollution output risk in the Panjiakou Reservoir basin. The results showed that the non-point source pollution output risk was high in the study area in 2018. The areas with higher and highest risk of nitrogen pollution output accounted for approximately 70.6% of the total watershed area, whereas the higher risk of phosphorus pollution output accounted for approximately 21.9%. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of non-point source pollution output risk in the Panjiakou Reservoir basin were analyzed. It was found that the non-point source pollution output risk in the Panjiakou Reservoir basin increased first and then decreased from April to September. This was consistent with the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation in the basin. Combined with the analysis of land use distribution characteristics, the upstream area of the basin was mainly cultivated land, whereas cities were concentrated in the downstream portion of the basin. Affected by agricultural production and human activities, the risk of non-point source pollution output was higher in these regions. In view of the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of non-point source pollution output risk, it is necessary to formulate a reasonable agricultural fertilization method, plan the landscape layout of source-sinks, and construct vegetation buffer zones.
Water pollution risk simulation and prediction in a drinking water catchment

Abstract:Soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) was employed to analyze the main sources and patterns of eutrophic pollutants in Laohutan reservoir, located in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province from Jan. 2010 to Apr. 2015. The situation of hydrology, water quality and economic benefit in the reservoir area under six management measures was simulated with scenario analysis. The results showed that the accuracy of daily runoff simulation was pretty good, with the percent bias (BIAS) below 20% (-17.57%--0.63%), coefficient of determination(R2)greater than 0.75(0.79-0.85),Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency(NSCE)greater than 0.70(0.71-0.86).The simulation of total nitrogen was relatively good(NSCE=0.39-0.58,R2=0.58-0.74,BIAS=-14.08%-7.18%), which met the requirements of the model. Therefore, the simulation results can reflect the hydrology and water quality changing rule of Laohutan reservoir. Compared to various hypothetical scenarios, the best water quality safety management measure was found to be promoting scientific fertilization. In conclusion, the SWAT model is applicable to simulate the runoff and agricultural nonpoint-source pollution in hilly area of western Zhejiang, and it is of scientific significance for hydrological simulation and nonpoint-source pollution control in this area.
Simulation and Prediction of Sudden Water Pollution in the Hanjiang River to Weihe River Water Transfer Area

Abstract:The water source area, water transport area, and water receiving area of a long-distance inter-basin water transfer project together form a complex water environment system. It is common for water environment risk events to have an affect the safe operation of these projects. This paper focuses on studying the inter-basin water transfer water diversion system from the Hanjiang River to the Weihe River. The Huangjinxia and Sanhekou reservoirs in the water source area and the tunnel in the water conveyance area are selected as the research subjects. A hydrodynamic-water quality mathematical model is constructed for the water transfer system engineering. This model is used to predict the behavior of various pollutants in the water system during sudden water pollution events and evaluate the risk of water quality associated with such events. The results show that when the leakage of non-degradable pollutants occurs, the increase of the leakage of non-degradable pollutants does not change the time required for the peak value of the pollution mass to be transported to the section, but it will increase the concentration of the peak value of the pollutants, shorten the time when the section is higher than the standard limit, and increase the pollution duration. When the leakage of degradable pollutants occurs, the degradable pollutants are affected by degradation and have little effect impacting the water quality at the intake in front of the dam. This study provides a scientific basis and reference for water pollution prevention and ensuring the safe operation of the water diversion system.

Abstract:Danjiangkou Reservoir is the source reservoir of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MRP). Any sudden water pollution accident in the reservoir would threaten the water supply of the MRP. We established a 3-D hydrodynamic and water quality model for the Danjiangkou Reservoir, and proposed scientific suggestions on the prevention and emergency management for sudden water pollution accidents based on simulated results. Simulations were performed on 20 hypothetical pollutant discharge locations and 3 assumed amounts, in order to model the effect of pollutant spreading under different reservoir operation types. The results showed that both the location and mass of pollution affected water quality; however, different reservoir operation types had little effect. Five joint regulation scenarios, which altered the hydrodynamic processes of water conveyance for the Danjiangkou and Taocha dams, were considered for controlling pollution dispersion. The results showed that the spread of a pollutant could be effectively controlled through the joint regulation of the two dams and that the collaborative operation of the Danjiangkou and Taocha dams is critical for ensuring the security of water quality along the MRP.

Abstract:Dam breaches often have catastrophic consequences in downstream areas. Hydrodynamic factors and the evacuation potential of the population at risk (PAR) have significant impacts on the loss of life (LOL) caused by dam breaches. However, the existing comprehensive evaluation models have not conducted in-depth research on the evacuation potential of populations. Thus, limited guidance is available for relevant departments to formulate emergency plans to reduce the potential LOL. Therefore, a new comprehensive evaluation model was proposed in this study. According to the relevant references and disaster theory, the main influencing factors and the process through which the LOL is caused by dam breaches were determined. The specific occurrence process was divided into six stages: a dam breach causes flood, the flood puts the PAR, the PAR complete the preparation work, the PAR evacuate, the un-evacuated population shelter themselves inside buildings, and flood causes the death of the exposed population. To calculate the LOL, the parameters relevant at each stage were defined. Furthermore, the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System, Geographic Information System, and related materials were used to simulate the flood routing and evacuation potential of the PAR, quantifying the parameters in the model. The model was applied to 14 towns in the downstream areas of the Luhun Reservoir in Henan Province, China, and its accuracy was verified by comparing the results obtained from the two existing models. In addition, the specific suggestions for reducing the potential LOL were proposed based on the results of the simulation.

Regional Risk Assessment for Point Source Pollution Based on a Water Quality Model of the Taipu River, China.

Abstract:Point source pollution is one of the main threats to regional environmental health. Based on a water quality model, a methodology to assess the regional risk of point source pollution is proposed. The assessment procedure includes five parts: (1) identifying risk source units and estimating source emissions using Monte Carlo algorithms; (2) observing hydrological and water quality data of the assessed area, and evaluating the selected water quality model; (3) screening out the assessment endpoints and analyzing receptor vulnerability with the Choquet fuzzy integral algorithm; (4) using the water quality model introduced in the second step to predict pollutant concentrations for various source emission scenarios and analyzing hazards of risk sources; and finally, (5) using the source hazard values and receptor vulnerability scores to estimate overall regional risk. The proposed method, based on the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP), was applied in the region of the Taipu River, which is in the Taihu Basin, China. Results of source hazard and receptor vulnerability analysis allowed us to describe aquatic ecological, human health, and socioeconomic risks individually, and also integrated risks in the Taipu region, from a series of risk curves. Risk contributions of sources to receptors were ranked, and the spatial distribution of risk levels was presented. By changing the input conditions, we were able to estimate risks for a range of scenarios. Thus, the proposed procedure may also be used by decisionmakers for long‐term dynamic risk prediction.
Construction of Water Pollution Monitoring Model after Flood Disaster Based on Big Data Analysis

Abstract:In view of the poor performance of pollution load reduction of the traditional monitoring model of water quality pollution after flood disaster, a monitoring model of water quality pollution after flood disaster based on big data analysis is constructed. The data of water quality pollution after flood disaster are obtained based on big data analysis, including the accumulated data of surface pollutants after flood disaster, the data of pipeline deposition after flood disaster, and the data of water after flood disaster. According to the biochemical reaction data in vivo, the 鈥渂est point鈥? 鈥渨orst point鈥?and 鈥渆xpected point鈥?data corresponding to each pollution index are calculated, the reference value of matter element analysis corresponding to each pollution index is obtained, the comprehensive correlation function value of monitoring points is calculated, and the optimization of monitoring points is realized. According to the basic equations and generalization results of the model, the water pollution monitoring model is constructed. The model module includes water pollution information management module, water situation acquisition module and water pollution monitoring module. In order to verify that the pollution load reduction performance of the water pollution monitoring model after flood disaster based on big data analysis is strong, the traditional water pollution monitoring model after flood disaster is compared with the model. The experimental results show that the pollution load reduction performance of the model is better than the traditional water pollution monitoring model after flood disaster, and it is more suitable for water pollution monitoring after flood disaster.

Abstract:The Three Gorges Reservoir area is recognized by its vast size, dense population, bustling economic and social activities along its banks, and by the significant volume of waterway traffic. These factors make it with a high risk of water pollution accidents, posing a serious threat to water environmental safety. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct a water environmental safety assessment in this region to ensure the safety of the water environment. In the present work, the Driving-Pressure-State-Impact-Response-Risk Water Environmental Safety model was proposed, and a comprehensive water environmental safety assessment system was established. The Water Environment Safety Index was introduced to measure the degree of water environment safety. This model synthesized multiple factors and their interrelationships, enabling a more accurate assessment of water environment safety. By adopting scientifically rigorous evaluation criteria, this assessment method enhanced the reliability and credibility of the results obtained. The water environment safety in the 22 counties and districts of the Three Gorges Reservoir area of Chongqing region from 2017 to 2021 was assessed in terms of temporal changes and spatial differentiation. In general, the overall water environment safety situation in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of Chongqing region is relatively safe, but a few counties/districts (such as Wanzhou District, Jiangjin District, etc.) are still in Warning . Spatially, the water environmental safety condition was relatively better in the northeast compared to the southwest. The main factors threatening water environment safety include: 1) the consequence of the Three Gorges Project, 2) severe soil erosion, 3) industrial, agricultural, and domestic pollution, and 4) frequent water pollution accidents. The present work provided a new method for conducting water environment safety assessments, which is expected to positively contribute to further research in this field.

Abstract:Dahuofang Reservoir is an important drinking water source for Shenyang, Fushun, Anshan, Liaoyang, and other cities. The water quality of the upstream inflow river directly affects the water supply safety. When a sudden water pollution accident occurs upstream of the reservoir, the pollution risk to the water source can be minimized if the variation rule of pollutant concentration along the course can be accurately simulated in time. Therefore, based on Mike 21, this paper established a hydrodynamic water quality coupling model of the Hun River basin upstream of Dahuofang Reservoir, and determined and verified the relevant parameters of the hydrodynamic model. In establishing the water quality model, the improved empirical frequency curve method was adopted to divide the high-flow period, the level period, and the low-flow period, so that the hydraulic conditions in each period were more reasonable. By a hypothetical scenario and working condition design, the suspended iron concentration and COD concentration along the course of a sudden water pollution accident were simulated. The diffusion rules of pollutants in different periods and under different working conditions were obtained. The most important objective was to obtain the six early warning index values in different hydrological periods, which allows the prediction of the scope and extent of the accident and provides a basis for ensuring the safety of the water supply at the water source.

Simulation-based Risk Analysis of Water Pollution Accidents Combining Multi-Stressors and Multi-Receptors in a Coastal Watershed

Abstract:As environmentally important ecosystems, coastal watersheds are vulnerable to abrupt water pollution events. Previous researches of accidental pollution in coastal watersheds mostly focused on oil leakages from mobile sources, pipelines, or stationary sources; however few considered chemical pollution accidents from terrestrial stationary sources. The present paper uses one-dimensional and MIKE 21 convection-diffusion models to simulate chemical transport processes in coastal rivers and in near-shore seas. Based on the simulation results, a Coastal Accidental Water Pollution Risk Analysis (CAWPRA) method is proposed. CAWPRA considers acute pollution risk passing from upstream to downstream, and to estuary and near-shore sea areas in a coastal watershed. The method is applied to Beihai City, a typical coastal area of rising economic development, to provide a risk assessment based on simulations of water accidental pollution from terrestrial stationary sources. A leakage event of hydrochloric acid from Wenkehaiyang Co. Ltd is taken as an example. Water quality simulation results indicate that after 6, 12, 18, and 24h the peak concentrations of hydrochloric acid would be 3.72, 0.91, 0.75, and 0.68mg/l, respectively, and accordingly, the areas of coastal water exceeding the seawater quality standard would be 5.56, 4.92, 9.71, and 45.01km2, respectively. Hydrochloric acid would reach Dangjiang Mangrove Nature Reserve a time 14h after the leakage event first occurred. The resultant map indicates high, medium, and low risk sub-areas. The map is useful at identifying the most risky sources and the most vulnerable receptors for the Beihai coastal watershed.

Abstract:The Yaohu Lake dyke flood protection area in Poyang Lake region has various water systems and complicated hydrological condition.The inundant flood hits the entire region during the flood period,so the corresponding flood risk analysis in this region has a great significance.A 1D and 2D coupled hydrodynamic model to simulate the evolution of levee-breach flood is developed in this study,and the model is optimized by roughness partitioning and river topography reduction,which improves the model's precision.The system is applied to Yaohu Lake dyke flood protection area,and the calculation area is divided into unstructured triangular grids.The instantaneous dike break is set up,and the breach flux meets the principle of water balance.The evolution result is reasonable and reliable,based on which the flood risk analysis is carried out.The analysis results show that the areas flooded due to the breaches of Jimingzhou,Dawangmiao and Sijiazha are 10.62,56.67 and 18.36 km2 respectively.The submerged distribution basically follows the principle of topography,and the submerged water depth in the protected area is basically deeper than 3 m.And the inundated area size and the impacted population are related to the breach's position.

Abstract:The water source reservoirs are the important urban water source in northern China. Although external pollution has been greatly improved, the internal pollutants in reservoirs continue to accumulate with the complex deposition and release processes, resulting in potential risks to water supply safety. To address the aforementioned issue, this paper proposed a simulation model of water quality named ECOlab EU1-WSR to simulate the spatio-temporal changes of water quality under the influence of internal pollution for the water source reservoirs. Based on the analysis of the water quality characteristics and the distribution of benthic vegetation in the reservoir, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was established based on MIKE3, the corresponding parameters and the related state variables were set, the ECOlab EU1-WSR model was established by secondly developing the original ECOlab EU1 template, and the real-time dynamic outputs of pollutant content in sediment were added to link the water quality index with sediment nutrition index for better revealing the impact of the internal pollution on the water quality. The performance of the model was evaluated by the case application on the water quality simulation of Daye reservoir and the optimization of the connection project between Daye reservoir and Xueye reservoir in Shandong Province China. The results showed that the model can accurately and simultaneously simulate the pollution in water and sediment by the comparative verification of hydrodynamics, water temperature, and water quality. Moreover, the model can effectively reflect the influence of the accumulation, deposition, and release of internal pollution on water quality by analyzing the correlation between the content of various pollution in water body and those in sediment, such as the total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the water body at the bottom of the water intake, were negatively correlated with the total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the sediments with correlation coefficients of 0.538 and 0.917, respectively. In addition, the optimal water inlet position and water flow rate of the connection project can be optimized and determined by using the model to effectively control water quality. The established model will be a useful tool for the design and management of a reservoir, the interconnection projects, and other water bodies by adaptively recoded.

Abstract:To solve increasingly serious water pollution problems, it is necessary to systematically manage water resources, water environment, and water ecology as elements of a watershed. Comprehensive watershed water pollution control should regard the basin as a whole, respect the natural laws of the river and lake system, and focus on the protection and restoration of its natural ecological environment so that the comprehensive ecological service functions of rivers and lakes can be fully realized. Based on the concepts of environmental capacity (EC) and environmental flow (EF), this study established watershed water pollution control scheme prediction and evaluation methods to explore the changes in the water environment and water ecology in the basin under different water pollution control schemes. The MIKE11 model was used to construct a hydrologic and water quality model of the study area, the one-dimensional water quality model was used to calculate the water environmental capacity, and the Tennant method was used to evaluate the environmental flow. In this study, the method was applied to the Luanhe River Basin of Chengde, Hebei Province, China. It simulated the concentration changes of four pollutants—namely, NH3-N, COD, TN, and TP—under eight different water pollution control schemes, and the responses of EC and EF were compared and analyzed. Some conclusions are as follows: (1) Reducing point source pollution has the most obvious effect on water pollution prevention, especially on NH3-N and COD, while reducing nonpoint source pollution is weaker and the effect of increasing upstream water is the weakest. (2) The increase in up-stream water inflow and reducing point source pollution can greatly increase the EC of NH3-N and COD. The EC of TN can be greatly increased by reducing point source pollution, and the EC of TP can be greatly increased by reducing nonpoint source pollution. (3) The increase in upstream water inflow can improve the EF level to a certain extent. This method can also be applied to other similar river basins, providing valuable suggestions for rationally formulating water environmental management strategies and for promoting the sustainable development of the ecological environment and social economy in the river basin.

Abstract:Watershed water quality management is a process with many steps. Mathematical model plays an important role in watershed management as it can resolve the problem quantificationally and be operated dynamically. HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran) developed by USEPA was chosen for the application in this paper. Hydrology and water quality simulation processes in the non-point source pollution model were introduced in the study, in which Dianchi Lake Basin was chosen for the case study. The whole basin was divided into nine sub-basins firstly. Then the non-point source database for the Dianchi Lake Basin was built. Sensitivity analysis revealed that only a few parameters were sensitive to the simulation of runoff and water quality processes. In the paper, the simulation processes for river outflow, SS, BOD, TN and TP were introduced in detail. The simulation processes for Panlongjiang Sub-watershed was given as an example. Parameter values were estimated from watershed properties, previous experimental and modeling studies, regional field studies and literature. Optimization of the parameter values, calibration of the model and validation of the simulation was achieved using stream flow and concentration of pollutants in the river outflow of watershed. The simulation results showed that relative error for runoff simulation in some sub-watersheds was very small. On the whole, the runoff simulation results were good. After that, the total and non-point source pollution loads of SS, BOD, TN and TP in each sub-watershed were calculated using the calibrated model. The results revealed that the main contributors of the non-point source pollution in the Dianchi Lake Basin were SS, TN and TP. From the spatial distribution to the non-point sources, nitrogen pollution mostly came from Panlongjiang, Baoxianghe and Chaidahe sub-watersheds. It could be attributed to the large amount usage of fertilizers in agricultural lands. SS and TP pollution status was serious in Chaidahe sub-watershed and western diffused area. The main reason could be explained as many phosphorite mines were distributed in such areas. High water and soil runoff and phosphorous adsorption had caused high non-point source pollution in total phosphorous.
