Abstract:Considerably improved flux pinning and critical current density J c values have been achieved in Y-deficient Y-123 superconductors by directional solidification in air. In comparison with the regular Y-123 composition, Y-deficient one also has an orthorhombic structure and Y-123 main crystal phase remains in it. Whereas with the shortage of Y, Y 1− x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7−y can be regarded as (YBa 2 Cu 3 ) 1− x O 7−t (Ba 2 Cu 3 ) x O t − y or (YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− z )(□ x Y O z − y ), so there may develop several kinds of microstructure defects as pinning sites in the system, such as highly dense, fine-scale, and faultlike defects, as well as localized superstructure, which are able to induce the increasing in flux pinning and J c values in higher external magnetic fields. This kind of simple nonstoichiometric route could lead to a commercial technique for flux-pinning enhancement in Y-123 bulk materials.

Abstract:Iron-containing oxide inclusions have been incorporated as nanoscale ferromagnetic precipitate flux pinning centers within pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) thin films via a simple process utilizing a composite deposition target. The resultant films exhibit a coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism at 77 K, and a consequent significant enhancement in their absolute critical current density, Jc, compared to pure YBCO films prepared under the same conditions. dasiaPoisoningpsila effects due to the incorporation of Fe into the YBCO matrix are avoided at sufficiently low concentrations of inclusions, where the greatest self-field Jc enhancement is seen, but do become increasingly evident as the concentration is increased. The process outlined has practical application in the synthesis of high-Jc YBCO films, with the absolute Jc values obtained in initial samples lying at the upper bound of reported values for samples produced worldwide to date.

Abstract:The local flux profile and the critical current are studied using an array of Hall sensors in a ferromagnetic-superconducting bilayer which consists of niobium film covering ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The results indicate about threefold enhancement of the flux pinning in niobium layer caused by the isolated magnetic domains which are created during the magnetization reversal of the Co/Pt multilayer. The geometrical barrier is absent, and the critical current is strongly peaked in close vicinity to the sample center, suggesting that the critical state differs from that predicted by the Bean model.

Abstract:BaSnO 3 (BSO) nanocolumns and Y 2BaCuO5 (Y211) nanoparticles have been successfully incorporated into YBCO thin films by premixed and surface-modified target approach. The effect of these artificially incorporated nanostructures on the vortex pinning properties of YBCO films is investigated based on the variation of critical current density (JC) with applied magnetic field and its variation with respect to the orientation of the applied magnetic field at two different temperatures: 77 and 65 K. The incorporation of Y211 nanoparticles into both YBCO and YBCO + BSO2% films results in improved JC-H characteristics, which is reflected in the enhanced pinning force density (Fp) values. The angular dependent JC measurement reveals that the YBCO film containing BSO nanocolumns exhibits JC peak along the c-axis, whereas the film containing Y211 nanoparticles exhibits isotropic enhancement in the JC values along the entire investigated angular regime. The YBCO film consisting of both kinds of nanostructures (BSO nanocolumns together with Y211 nanoparticles), on the other hand, exhibits mixed characteristics of different kinds of pinning: strong c-axis JC peak together with isotropically enhanced JC in the intermediate angular regime. A possible vortex pinning mechanism due to different kinds of artificially incorporated nanostructures is also discussed.

Abstract:Demanding microwave applications in a magnetic field require the material optimization not only in zero-field but, more important, in the in-field flux motion dominated regime. However, the effect of artificial pinning centers (APC) remains unclear at high frequency. Moreover, in coated conductors the evaluation of the high frequency material properties is difficult due to the complicated electromagnetic problem of a thin superconducting film on a buffered metal substrate. In this paper we present an experimental study at 48 GHz of 150-200 nm YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ coated conductors, with and without APCs, on buffered Ni-5at%W tapes. By properly addressing the electromagnetic problem of the extraction of the superconductor parameters from the measured overall surface impedance $Z$, we are able to extract and to comment on the London penetration depth, the flux flow resistivity and the pinning constant, highlighting the effect of artificial pinning centers in these samples.

Abstract:The measurements of lower-critical-field H-C1 (T)(1) upper-critical-field H-C2 (T) and the bulk pinning force F-p(H) were carried out for a superconductor MgCNi3 sample with T-C = 7.5K prepared under high pressure. The sample has a good extensibility. We conclude that the flux pinning at lower fields results from the intra-granular structural defects, such as dislocations, and the enhancement of bulk pinning force near the irreversibility field Hi,, is due to the softening of the flux lattice.

Abstract:We report on the superior vortex pinning of single and multilayer Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films with self-assembled c-axis and artificially introduced ab-plane pins. Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 can accept a very high density of pins (15-20 vol%) without Tc suppression. The matching field is greater than 12 T, producing a significant enhancement of the critical current density Jc, an almost isotropic Jc (Theta,20T) > 10^5 A/cm2, and global pinning force density Fp of about 50 GN/m^3. This scenario strongly differs from the high temperature cuprates where the addition of pins without Tc suppression is limited to 2-4 vol%, leading to small HIrr enhancements and improved Jc only below 3-5 Tesla.

Abstract:Anisotropy is an intrinsic factor that dictates the magnetic properties of YBCO, thus with great impact for many applications. Artificial pinning centres are often introduced in an attempt to mitigate its effect, resulting in less anisotropic electrical and magnetic properties. However, the nanoengineering of the superconductor makes the quantification of the anisotropy itself uncertain: the intrinsic anisotropy due to the layered structure, quantified by the anisotropy factor $\gamma$, mixes up with the additional anisotropy due to pinning. As a consequence, there is no consensus on the experimental anisotropy factor $\gamma$ that can result in YBCO when directional (twin planes, nanorods) or isotropic defects are present. We present here measurements of the magnetic field and angular dependent surface impedance in very different nanostructured YBCO films, grown by chemical route and by pulsed laser deposition, with different kind of defects (nanorods, twin planes, nanoparticles). We show that the surface impedance measurements are able to disentangle the intrinsic anisotropy from the directional pinning anisotropy, thanks to the possibility to extract the true anisotropic flux--flow resistivity and by correctly exploiting the angular scaling. We find in all films that the intrinsic anisotropy $\gamma = 5.3\pm0.7$. By contrast, the pinning anisotropy determines a much complex, feature--rich and nonuniversal, sample--dependent angular landscape.

Abstract:We study the transport properties of a superconducting Nb film with a square lattice of artificial pinning centers (APCs) as a function of dc current, at a temperature close to the superconducting transition temperature of the film. We find that, at low dc currents, the differential resistance of the film shows the standard matching field anomaly, that is, the differential resistance has a local minimum at magnetic fields corresponding to an integer number of flux lines per APC. However, at higher dc currents, the differential resistance at each matching field turns to a local maximum, which is exactly opposite to the low current behavior. This novel effect might indicate that the flux lines in the APC system change their flow mode as the dc current is increased.

Abstract:The critical current density at high magnetic fields of high-temperature superconducting single crystals and films is mainly determined by the flux pinning force arising from interactions between fluxons and crystalline defects or secondary phases. However, iron-based superconductors, which are acknowledged as promising candidates for high-field applications, suffer from a lack of strong flux pinning centers. It leads to a critical current density ( J c ) inferior to that of iron-based superconducting films. In this work, we applied a simple annealing method to tailor flux pinning structures in slightly underdoped BaFe 2-x Ni x As 2 single crystals without significantly compromising superconductivity. We propose that the probable strengthened orthorhombic distortion by post-annealing could generate twin domain boundaries or short-range antiferromagnetic clusters with sizes comparable to the in-plane coherence length. The inclusion of the structural/magnetic structures enhances electron scattering but also provides potent flux pinning centers. Ultimately, the J c is enhanced by 2.5 times in the samples with optimized pinning landscapes. Our studies highlight the importance of further exploring underdoped iron-based superconductors, in which magnetic/orthorhombic phases that compete and coexist with superconductivity may also act as effective pinning centers.

Abstract:Self-assembled artificial pinning centers (APCs) with controlled morphology are key to optimal pinning in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films and coated conductors. Here, we investigate the transport critical current density $J_{c}$ (H, T, θ) of YBCO films with BaZrO3 nanorods (BZO-NRs) and 3 vol.% Y2O3 nanoparticles (Y2O3-NPs) as the BZO-NRs concentration is systematically varied in the range of 2–6 vol.%. We show that the growth kinetics of APCs in these BZO-Y2O3 double-doped YBCO films differs significantly from YBCO films doped with BZO only. In particular, the presence of Y2O3-NPs reduced the formation of the aligned BZO-NRs in the c-axis or normal of the film, enabling a high-concentration isotropic BZO-based APCs to form at high BZO doping. This resulted in a significantly enhanced pinning force density $F_{p}\,(H)$ as well as isotropic pinning landscape. By fitting the Dew–Hughes equation of the pinning force density $F_{{{p}}}\,(H)$ at different temperatures $T\,= \,{\text{50}}\hbox{--} {\text{80}}\,{\text{K}}$ and angles of H at $\theta \,= \,0\,(H{\rm{/ / }}$c-axis), 45°, and 90° (H//ab), we extract the scaling behaviors of the $F_{{{p}}}\,(H)$ associated with the BZO-NRs and isotropic BZO and Y2O3 NPs. This result sheds light on approaches towards interactive control of strong and isotropic APCs in YBCO films and coated conductors.

Abstract:Different from the non-magnetic pinning centers, the magnetic pinning centers have stronger flux pinning force due to the direct magnetic interaction between the magnetic pinning centers and the magnetic vortices, thus have been widely used to enhance the critical current density of various superconductors. In this article, nanoparticles of antiferromagnet CrB2 were introduced as magnetic pinning center to improve the flux pinning force density (F p), irreversible field (H irr), and critical current density (J c) of MgB2. Compared to the pristine sample, the CrB2 doped MgB2 with low doping levels shows a significantly improved J c and F p, especially in the high field region. H irr is also substantially enhanced. It is revealed that the magnetic flux pinning behavior of CrB2 doped samples obviously deviates from the surface pinning law followed by most pure MgB2. Through theoretical analysis and curve fitting, an extra pinning force superimposed on the surface pinning background is separated and identified, which follows the rule of point pinning. Such a pinning scenario is supported by the microstructure analyses which demonstrate that CrB2 nanoparticles are highly dispersed and embedded in MgB2 matrix, acting as effective pinning centers.

Abstract:A series of single phase YBa2Cu3Oy samples with various oxygen contents and Tcmid's> 90K were prepared, and their structures, superconductivities, flux pinning behaviors have been determined and investigated. The experimental results show that the oxygen deficiencies result in enhancements of critical current density Jc and flux pinning force density Fp, moreover, there exists an optimal concentration of okygen deficiencies, corresponding to the maximal enhancemenes of Jc and Fp. Different from the cases of y= 6. 96,6. 83,Jc of y= 6.94,6.86 samples vary unmonotonicly with magnetic field H, correpondingly, the magnetization curves exhibit an abnormal peak known as "fishtail" effect. Fitted with the scaling law, it is found that when 6.83≤y≤6.94, the peak in fp(h) curves appears at the same reduced magnetic field h(≈0. 6). It indicates that the existence of oxygen deficiencies introduces new flux pinning centres in YBa2Cu3Oy.

Abstract:In superconducting films under an applied dc current, we analyze experimentally and theoretically the influence of engineered pinning on the vortex velocity at which the flux-flow dissipation undergoes an abrupt transition from low to high resistance. We argue, based on a nonuniform distribution of vortex velocity in the sample, that in strongly disordered systems the mean critical vortex velocity for flux-flow instability (i) has a nonmonotonic dependence on magnetic field and (ii) decreases as the pinning strength is increased. These findings challenge the generally accepted microscopic model of Larkin and Ovchinnikov (1979 J. Low. Temp. Phys. 34 409) and all subsequent refinements of this model which ignore the presence of pinning centers.
C-Axis Superconducting Performance Enhancement in Co-doped Ba122 Thin Films by an Artificial Pinning Center Design

Abstract:1% mol and 3% mol Y2O3 oxide particles were introduced into Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba122) thin films on CaF2 (00l) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition to enhance the superconducting performance. They behave as amorphous nanorods oriented along the c-axis of the Co-doped Ba122 matrix, as revealed by the transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements, and serve as strong c-axis pinning centers. The transport critical current density J(c) reaches a value of ?3.9 MA cm(?2) in self-field at 4.2 K and a significant enhancement in c-axis J(c), much higher than the ab-plane J(c), was also observed due to those nanorods, suggesting that the extrinsic pinning strength by nanorods exceeds that of the ab-plane. It is surprising that the nanorods can significantly improve the thermal activation energies for vortex motion parallel to the c-axis to greater than those parallel to the ab-plane, and simultaneously reduce the superconducting transition width of the c-axis to less than that of the ab-plane at medium and low fields, implying a reduction in the thermal fluctuation in the vortex system. More importantly, the nanorods enhance the slopes dHc2cdT<i at greater than 4 T K-?1, resulting in an anomalous increase in the anisotropic ratio ?& xfffd;=& xfffd;Hc2abHc2cab-plane pinning, and correlated pinning with temperature and field, are discussed.

Abstract:Pinning enhancement for YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films is critical for their future applications such as superconducting cables, generators, and motors. In this study, several pinning landscapes are introduced and compared for improving the superconducting properties of YBCO thin films. First, BaZrO3 (BZO) nanoparticles have been doped into YBCO matrix providing uniform defect pinning centers and resulting in the superconducting property enhancement. Second, a magnetic nanocomposite of (La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO))x(CeO2 )1-x (with compositions of LSMO and CeO2 varied from 50:50 to 70:30) has been incorporated into YBCO as either a cap layer or a buffer layer. Using this approach, both magnetic pinning and defects pinning are introduced in the systems. Third, multilayers of (LSMO)0.5(CeO2)0.5/YBCO have been deposited to achieve uniform defect and magnetic pinning effects through the film thickness. The superconducting properties (critical temperature Tc, and especially the critical current density Jc) are compared for all the YBCO films with different pinning landscapes, and the corresponding pinning mechanisms are also discussed for each case. It is found that the pinning effect of YBCO film with magnetic nanocomposite layer is more significant under lower applied field, compared to the BZO-YBCO film. Through this comparison study, optimum pinning landscapes with combined defects and magnetic pinning approaches are proposed.

Abstract:A methodology of general validity to study vortex pinning in YBa2Cu3O7?? (YBCO) is described. It is based on measuring the angular-dependent critical current density in a large range of temperatures and magnetic fields and it permits one to identify, separate and quantify the three basic vortex pinning contributions associated to anisotropic?strong, isotropic?strong and isotropic?weak pinning centers. The corresponding vortex pinning phase diagrams for these three contributions are built up. This methodology is applied to the recently discovered solution-derived YBCO?BaZrO3 nanocomposites which display a maximum vortex pinning force of 78?GN?m?3 at 65?K, being five times larger than that of NbTi at 4.2?K. These nanocomposites show an effective anisotropy tending to unity and the best superconducting properties observed so far in YBCO. We present the richness and complexity of their microstructure and the correlation with the vortex pinning properties. The application of the vortex pinning methodology and comparison with a standard solution-derived YBCO film enable us to identify the isotropic?strong defect contribution being at the origin of their unique properties.

Abstract:Large area arrays of through-thickness nanoscale pores have been milled into superconducting Nb thin films via a process utilizing anodized aluminum oxide thin film templates. These pores act as artificial flux pinning centers, increasing the superconducting critical current, Jc, of the Nb films. By optimizing the process conditions including anodization time, pore size and milling time, Jc values approaching and in some cases matching the Ginzburg-Landau depairing current of 30 MA/cm^2 at 5 K have been achieved - a Jc enhancement over as-deposited films of more than 50 times. In the field dependence of Jc, a matching field corresponding to the areal pore density has also been clearly observed. The effect of back-filling the pores with magnetic material has then been investigated. While back-filling with Co has been successfully achieved, the effect of the magnetic material on Jc has been found to be largely detrimental compared to voids, although a distinct influence of the magnetic material in producing a hysteretic Jc versus applied field behavior has been observed. This behavior has been tested for compatibility with currently proposed models of magnetic pinning and found to be most closely explained by a model describing the magnetic attraction between the flux vortices and the magnetic inclusions.

Abstract:Mixed pinning landscapes in superconductors are emerging as an effective strategy to achieve high critical currents in high, applied magnetic fields. Here, we use heavy-ion and proton irradiation to create correlated and point defects to explore the vortex pinning behavior of each and combined constituent defects in the iron-based superconductor Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 and find that the pinning mechanisms are non-additive. The major effect of p-irradiation in mixed pinning landscapes is the generation of field-independent critical currents in very high fields. At 7 T ‖ c and 5 K, the critical current density exceeds 5 MA/cm2.
Critical Current and Flux Pinning in C-Axis Oriented Yba2cu3o7/Prba2cu3o7 Superlattices

Abstract:A magnetical critical current density J(c) of the order of 10(6) A/cm(2) at 4.5 K has been obtained in c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO/PBCO) superlattices with 24 Angstrom thick YBCO layer. The flux pinning force can be scaled as f(p) = alpha(1 - t)(m) h(p)(1 - h)(q), m = 3.5, p = 1.1, and q = 2.9 for YBCO(24 Angstrom)/PBCO(24 Angstrom) m = 3.4, p = 1.2, and q = 2.7 for YBCO(24 Angstrom)/PBCO(84 Angstrom). This approximate h(1 - h)(3) scaling behavior suggests a combined effect of tilt modulus C-44 and shear modulus C-66 of the flux line lattice (FLL), indicating that FLL executes both tilt and shear motion in the two superlattices. The interfacial flux pinning mechanism has also been discussed.
