Abstract:The river sediment acts not only as the major carrier but also the secondary sources of heavy metal contamination in river water.Elemental concentrations and chemical phases are essential to the study of heavy metal contamination in rivers and the evaluation of their ecological risks.In this study,1 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HC1) is used to leach heavy metals out from the samples (including both floodplain sediment and suspended particulate matter) collected from the Jiaojiang River,aiming to investigate the distribution of heavy metals (Zn,Pb,Cr,Cu and Cd) in acid-soluble and acid-insoluble phases,and thus to explore the major sources of heavy metals and their ecological risks.The concentrations of Zn,Pb,Cu and Cd in the Jiaojiang sediments are significantly higher than the local background values and their leaching rates,the ratios of elemental concentrations in the leachate to those in bulk samples,are higher than 60％.When the environment conditions change,heavy metals in the leachate can be easily released to the overlying water column and cause high ecological risks.The results of correlation and principal component analyses reveal that heavy metals in the leachate are incorporated into the sediments from aqueous solution,by processes such as adsorption onto Fe-Mn oxides and organic complexation,predominantly controlled by emissions from industrial and agricultural activities.According to the data of enrichment factor (EF) and potential ecological risk index,Cd is the most enriched element in the Jiaojiang sediments,especially in the upstream region,the Yongan River,where Cd is significantly enriched with high ecological risk,while Zn,Pb,Cr,Cu all display mild to moderate increase.The accumulation of heavy metals in the rivers in southeastern China and their ecological risks deserve further investigation.
Assessing Soil and Plant Pollution by Abandoned Rural Waste Dumping Sites in Ningbo, China

Abstract:This paper reports the concentration of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the soils and rices surrounding the abandoned rural waste dumping sites in Ningbo. Igeo (geoaccumulation index) was calculated to assess the contamination degree of heavy metals in soils. The mean contents of Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb of soils were 33.3, 24.1, 1.5, 118.9 and 45.6 mg/(kg DW) (dry weight), respectively. All of them were much higher than that of the reference value (i.e. CK), but there were no coherent trend of the metal contents within 1-120m distance from the dumping site. Igeo of heavy metals reveals the order of Cd>Cu>Cr>Pb>Zn, and the contamination assessment of soils using Igeo indicate the moderate Cd pollution, while the soils were unpolluted-moderately overall by Cr, Cu, Zn as well as Pb. The heavy metal contents in root, stem & leaf and rice grains were all remarkable higher than that of the CK at 20-120 m distances, and the heavy metal contents in root were evidently much higher than other plant parts, while those in rice grain were lowest, indicating the great bioaccumulation trend of heavy metals. Although the metal contents in the rice grain were within the legislation limit, its bioaccumulation trend of heavy metals was remarkable, whose contents were 4.38-fold for Cr, 1.76-fold for Cu, 1.28-fold for Zn, 2.67-fold for Cd and 3.03-fold for Pb higher than that of reference value, respectively. Finally, we proposed a decentralized in-situ restoration approach for the dumping sites.

Abstract:The Jiangzhe Area was relatively common area that rely on industrial process for rapid development with serious heavy metals contamination. This study investigated the spatial, vertical and speciation distribution, correlation of heavy metals, as well as assessed pollution and health risks in three representative contamination industries at Jingjiang (electroplating site), Taizhou (e-waste recycling site) and Wenzhou (leather production site) in the Jiangzhe Area. The results indicated that the Cr(VI) pollution was serious in all three sites and there was a tendency to gradually decrease with depth. As for other heavy metals, not only the total concentration, but also the addition of acid soluble and reducible speciation generally decreased with soil depth at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites. Significantly positive correlations supported by correlation analysis were detected between the following elements: Cu-Ni (p < 0.01), Cr(VI)-Ni (p < 0.05) and Cr(VI)-Cu (p < 0.05) at Jingjiang site, Cu-Ni (p < 0.01), Cu-Cd (p < 0.01) and Ni-Cd (p < 0.05) at Taizhou site indicating possibly the same sources and pathways of origin, while the significantly negative correlation of Cd-Ni (p < 0.05) at Wenzhou site meaning the different sources. As regards the pollution assessment of topsoil, the mean PI value indicated that Cr(VI) contaminated severe in all three sites. In general, Jingjiang site was severe pollution (4.06), while Taizhou and Wenzhou (2.27 and 2.66) were moderate pollution, as NIPI value shown. In terms of health risk assessment that received much attention, non-carcinogenic risks caused by Pb contamination were significant for children at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites, with the HI values of 3.42E+ 00 and 2.03E+ 00, respectively. Ni caused unacceptable carcinogenic risk for both adults and children at all three sites. The present study can help to better understand the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the commonly developed industrial area, and thus to control the environmental quality, so as to truly achieve the goal of ''Green Deal objectives ''.
Risk Assessment and Prediction of Heavy Metal Pollution in Groundwater and River Sediment: A Case Study of a Typical Agricultural Irrigation Area in Northeast China

Abstract:The areas with typical municipal sewage discharge river and irrigation water function were selected as study sites in northeast China. The samples from groundwater and river sediment in this area were collected for the concentrations and forms of heavy metals (Cr(VI), Cd, As, and Pb) analysis. The risk assessment of heavy metal pollution was conducted based on single-factor pollution index ( I ) and Nemerow pollution index (NI). The results showed that only one groundwater sampling site reached a polluted level of heavy metals. There was a high potential ecological risk of Cd on the N21-2 sampling site in river sediment. The morphological analysis results of heavy metals in sediment showed that the release of heavy metals can be inferred as one of the main pollution sources of groundwater. In addition, the changes in the concentration and migration scope of As were predicted by using the Groundwater Modeling System (GMS). The predicted results showed that As will migrate downstream in the next decade, and the changing trend of As polluted areas was changed with As content districts because of some pump wells downstream to form groundwater depression cone, which made the solute transfer upstream.

Environmental Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Typical Vegetable Field and Irrigation Sediment in Xijiang River Basin, China: Spatial Distribution and Ecological Risk

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) contamination of agro-ecosystems has raised great attention across the world due to the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization. Importantly, HMs have been consistently entering the food webs, imposing great risks on public health. However, previous studies have focused more on large-scale areas. Exemplarily, some typical areas (e.g., riverside farmlands) receive insufficient attention, but they may have a higher ecological risk. In this study, we used a series of indices to evaluate risks, including single factor index, Nemerow index, geological accumulation index, potential ecological risk index, risk assessment code, etc. Based on the field investigation, we systematically analyzed the pollution characteristics and ecological risks of five HMs (i.e., Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, and Ni) in the typical vegetable soil and its irrigation sediment in Xijiang River Basin, Guangdong, China. The results indicate that the pH values of the soil and sediment are mainly neutral or slightly acidic. Moreover, large-scale natural sources may have the effect on the soil and sediment, among which storm runoff and scouring of the river may be main natural factors of HM activation. And importantly, there was a migration cycle (with the in-out trait) for the main non-residual forms of HMs between riverside soil and sediment. According to the principal component analysis (PCA), HMs may be mainly affected by anthropogenic sources. Specifically, PC1 may be related to transportation and agricultural machineries, and PC2 may be related to pesticides and fertilizers. Also, according to risk assessment code and the ration of secondary phase to primary phase, these meant high proportion of the bio-available forms of HMs. Conversely, Pearson correlation coefficient between bioavailable metal index and the sum of toxic unit was not high, which was related to low contents of the bio-available HMs. And though, these indices may show great differences due to different method focuses, an important suggestion is that integrating all the methods can receive more comprehensive results of ecological risks. According to the bioavailable metal index, the bio-availability of HMs decreases in the following order: river sediment (3.69 ± 1.24) > riverside farmland soil (2.28 ± 0.61) > inside-dyke farmland soil (2.26 ± 1.24) > reservoir sediment (1.99 ± 0.18). Besides, comprehensive evaluation indicates that Cu and Zn pose the greater environmental risks as they have the highest effective content, bioavailability, and mobility. Thus, developing high-tech environmental monitoring, properly purifing irrigation water, and improving the drainage systems are a necessity for these HMs.

Abstract:The level of concentration of heavy metal in soil is detrimental to soil quality. The Heigangkou-Liuyuankou irrigation area in the lower-reach of Yellow River irrigation, as home to a large population and a major site to agricultural production, is vulnerable to heavy metal pollution. This study examined soil quality in Heigangkou-Liuyuankou irrigation areas of Kaifeng, China. Pollution in soil and potential risks introduced by heavy metal accumulation were assessed using Nemerow, Geoaccumulation, and Hakanson's ecological risk indices. Statistics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to model and present the spatiotemporal changes of the pollution sources and factors affecting the levels of pollution. The heavy metals found in the sampled soil are Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg. Among them, Cd is more concentrated than the others. The southwestern region of the studied area confronts the most serious heavy metal pollution. There exist spatial disparities of low concentrations of different heavy metals in the study area. Hg and Cd are found to pose the highest potential ecological risks. However, their risk levels are not the same across the study area. Levels concentration of Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg in soil are highly correlated. In combination, they post an additional threat to the ecological environment. Transportation, rural settlements, and water bodies are found to be the major sources of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg pollution in the soil; among the major sources, transportation is the most significant factor.

Abstract:Direct discharge of chromium-containing waste water and improper disposal of waste residues in industrial sites may lead to the vertical migration of metals into aquifers, posing serious threat to soil-groundwater system. The heterogeneity in soil profile further aggravates the complexity and unpredictability of this transport process. However, topsoil was the main focus of most studies. Herein, the vertical transport and transformation of Cr in soils at different depths in three industrial sites (i.e., Shijiazhuang, Zhuzhou, and Guangzhou) were investigated to delineate Cr transport and retention characteristics under complex conditions. Regional and vertical differences in soil properties led to the specificity in Cr migration behaviors among these three sites. Correlation analysis showed that soil pH (r = -0.909, p < 0.05) and Fe content (r = 0.949, p < 0.01) were the major controlling factors of Cr(VI) migration and transformation in aquifers. Furthermore, the soil of Zhuzhou site showed the maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) (0.225 mol/kg), and the strongest reduction ability of Cr(VI) was observed in the Guangzhou soil. Results of model-based long-term forecast indicated that the Cr(III) concentration in the liquid phase of Guangzhou subsoil could reach 0.08 mol/m3 within 20 years. Heavier rainfall condition exacerbated the contamination due to an increased pollutant flux and enhanced convection. Specially, Cr was fixed in the topsoil of Zhuzhou site with the formation of PbCrO4 and presented least vertical migration risk. The conclusions above can provide scientific theoretical guidance for heavy metal pollution prevention and control in industrial contaminated regions.
Short−Term Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Water from Xiaohe River Irrigation Area, China: Levels, Sources and Distribution

Abstract:The aims of this study were to determine the pollution characteristics of heavy metals and their potential harm to human health in the surface water of agricultural irrigation areas, China, over a short term. In this study, Cu, Zn, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cd, and As in surface water of the Xiaohe River irrigation area were detected and analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cd, and As exceeded the national environmental quality standard for surface water in varying degrees. The concentrations of heavy metals in surface water in October were significantly lower than that in November and December due to the impact of extreme precipitation events. Point source pollution (industrial sewage, etc.) was the main factor affecting the spatial distribution of heavy metals. The main source of heavy metals in October was domestic sewage. Domestic sewage and industrial sewage were the main sources of heavy metals in November. The sources of heavy metals in surface water in December were relatively diverse, and industrial sewage was the main source. The temporal variation of heavy metal pollution sources changed significantly. Industrial sewage was the main pollution source of heavy metals in surface water in the study area. The impact of urban domestic sewage and agricultural activities cannot be ignored. The health risk of heavy metals in surface water mainly depends on Cr, Cd, and As. Policy recommendations were also proposed for better control of heavy metal pollution in the surface water of river ecosystems involving agricultural irrigation areas.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution of soil in agricultural areas is the most prominent environmental pollution problem in China, seriously affecting human health and food security. It has become one of the environmental problems to which all sectors of society attach great importance. Soil heavy metals in the weathering area of hazardous geological bodies in southwest China have naturally high background attributes. Therefore, ecological risk assessment and analysis of potential sources of soil heavy metals in southwest China is of great significance for soil health management, soil heavy metal pollution control and territorial spatial planning. In this study, we collected 787 soil samples (0–20 cm) in Xuanwei County in China and analyzed the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils. Igeo, RI, HI and CR were used to calculate the pollution levels, ecological risks and human health risks. Additionally, the PMF model and one-way ANOVA were used to identify the potential sources and discuss the factors affecting the enrichment of heavy metals. The results showed that the mean contents of the surface soils were 1.190 (Cd), 139.4 (Cr), 96.74 (Cu), 0.081 (Hg), 56.97 (Ni), 46.66 (Pb) and 130.1 (Zn) mg/kg. All heavy metals exceeded the background values of the A layer soil in Yunnan Province. The Igeo showed that Cd was the most hazardous element in the study area, followed by Cu, Cr, As, Ni and Pb. The RI showed that low ecological risks, moderate ecological risks, considerable ecological risks and strong ecological risks accounted for 3.81%, 55.27%, 37.74% and 3.18%, respectively, of the total samples, and Cd was the main dominant element. The HI values of the As element in children were greater than 1, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk, and other elements' risks were acceptable. The CR values of Cr and Ni were higher than their limits (1 × 10−4), and both had carcinogenic risks in children and adults, as did As in children. According to the PMF model, four heavy metals sources were identified: geological sources (32%), sources from mining activities (19.38%), atmospheric deposition sources (17.57%) and agricultural sources (31.05%). Thereinto, As and Pb were mainly derived from agricultural sources, Cd and Cr were mainly associated with geological sources, Cu was largely from mining activity sources, Hg was mainly from atmospheric deposition sources and Ni and Zn were mainly from geological sources, mining activities and agricultural activities. The parent material has a significant influence on the enrichment of heavy metals in the soil, and the heavy metals are significantly enriched in the carbonate parent material and quaternary parent material. Topography also plays a role in heavy metal accumulation; Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn gradually decreased with the increase in altitude, and As and Pb increased with the increase in altitude. Mn-oxide played a crucial part in the enrichment of Cu and Zn, while SOC, K2O and pH had little influence on the accumulation of heavy metals.

Abstract:The pollution of agricultural soil by heavy metals is a significant environmental issue that has a serious impact on human health and food security. This study focused on investigating the presence of heavy metal pollution in sewage-irrigated soils in Taiyuan city. A total of 110 soil samples were analyzed for the presence of As, Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu and Zn. The results showed that the concentrations of these metals ranged from 0.06 to 26.74 mg/kg for As, 0.00 to 0.84 mg/kg for Hg, 0.03 to 0.69 mg/kg for Cd, 44.32 to 100.09 mg/kg for Pb, 9.85 to 42.19 mg/kg for Cr, 13.38 to 53.72 mg/kg for Cu, and 42.77 to 145.47 mg/kg for Zn. The average concentrations of these metals were found to be below the risk values specified in the "Soil environmental quality (GB15618-2018)", except for As and Cd in three sampling points in Xiaodian District. The heavy metal pollution in these areas can be attributed to various sources, such as industrial activities, the use of fertilizers and pesticides, and the irrigation process. According to the geo–accumulation index, the agricultural soil in the Taiyuan irrigation area was found to be uncontaminated by Zn, Cr, Cu, and As, and lightly contaminated by Cd, Hg, and Pb. The Nemerow Pollution Index indicated that the soil at all sampling points exhibited a slight level of pollution. Moreover, the ecological risk assessment indicated that all heavy metals posed a slight level of pollution. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for the development of effective policies and measures for soil environmental protection and pollution control.

Abstract:The Zhangshi Irrigation Area (ZIA) in Shenyang, China has been irrigated by industrial wastewater since 1962. Since then, parts of the ZIA have been rezoned for industrial uses, but the remaining area, named Sluice Gate III (SLIII) and Lower Reaches (LR), still occupies 1825ha. Although land irrigation with industrial wastewater ceased in 1992, a study on heavy metals in soils was carried out to assess the feasibility of agricultural crop cultivation in SLIII and LR. A detailed field investigation was conducted and both total heavy metal concentrations and bioavailable fraction in soil were determined. The results have highlighted that Cd concentrations in soils still exceed the Environmental Quality Standard for Soil in China (GB15618-1995) grade C standard in SLIII region, and grade B standard in LR. In the SLIII, Zn and Pb concentrations in soil are higher than the grade A standard, although Cu is close the grade A standard. In SLIII the dominant chemical fractions were the exchangeable and carbonatic forms, which represent up to 43% and 35% of the Cd, respectively. The Cd in these two fractionations poses the highest risk for the plant absorption and accumulation. Therefore the SLIII should be abandoned for cultivated crops to prevent the Cd contamination of food chain and any associated hazards to human health.
Heavy Metal Pollution and Health Risk Assessment of Vegetable–Soil Systems of Facilities Irrigated with Wastewater in Northern China

Abstract:Soil pollution by heavy metals is a major concern in China and has received much attention in recent years. Aiming to investigate the status of heavy metal pollution and the safety of vegetables in the soil of wastewater-irrigated facilities, this study investigated the distribution and migration characteristics of heavy metals in vegetable–soil systems of facilities in a typical sewage irrigation area of the Xi River, Shenyang City, northern China. Health risks due to the fact of exposure to heavy metals in the vegetable soil of facilities and ingrown vegetables through different exposure pathways were evaluated. Spatial interpolation and a potential ecological risk assessment were applied to evaluate the soil quality. Bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) were used to analyze the absorption and transportation capacity of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn by different parts of different vegetables. The results showed that the average concentration of Cd exceeded the standard values by 1.82 times and accumulated by 11 times, suggesting that Cd poses the most severe pollution among the four metals in the soil of facilities in the Xi River sewage irrigation area. In the city, a significant accumulation of Cd in the soil was identified with different spatial distributions. Cd also contributed the most in terms of the estimated potential ecological risk index, while the impacts of the other three metals were relatively small. The concentrations of heavy metals were mostly lower than the limit set by the corresponding Chinese standards. Various BCFs were observed for the four metals in the order Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb. Vegetables also demonstrated different BCFs in the order of leaf vegetables > Rhizome vegetable > Solanaceae vegetable. The magnitude of the noncarcinogenic risk for all four heavy metals was less than one for all three exposure routes and did not cause significant noncarcinogenic health effects in humans. However, the carcinogenic risk of Cd from some vegetables via dietary intake was considered higher. Protection measures should be taken to implement better pollution control and land use planning.

Abstract:Food security and cultivated land utilization can be seriously affected by heavy metal (HM) pollution of the soil. Therefore, identifying the pollution sources of farmland is the way to control soil pollution and enhance soil quality effectively. In this research, 95 surface soil samples, 34 vegetable samples, 27 irrigation water samples, and 20 fertilizer samples were collected from the Wuqing District of Tianjin City, China and was used to determine their HMs accumulation and potential ecological risks. Then, kriging interpolation and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were utilized to identify the sources of soil HMs. The results indicated that soil HMs in the study area were contaminated at a medium level, but that the pollution of Cd was more severe, and the Cd content in vegetables was slightly higher than the permissible threshold (0.02 mg·kg−1). Furthermore, a non-homogeneous distribution was observed, with higher concentrations of HM contaminants concentrated in the southwest of the study area, where many metal manufacturing industries are located. Our results suggest that the Cd originated from industrial activity; As and Pb from agricultural practices; Ni, Cu, Cr, and As mainly from natural sources; Zn and Cu from organic fertilizer; Pb and Cd mainly from traffic discharge; and Cr, Ni, and Pb from sewage irrigation. Obviously, the accumulation of soil HMs in the study area could be mainly attributed to industrial activities, implying the need for implementation of government strategies to reduce industrial point-source pollution.

Fractionation and Mobility Risks of Heavy Metals and Metalloids in Wastewater-Irrigated Agricultural Soils from Greenhouses and Fields in Gansu, China

Abstract:Wastewater irrigation reduces the pressure on freshwater usage but leads to the accumulation of heavy metal (loid)s in soils. This study investigated heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the acid-soluble (F1), reducible (F2), oxidizable (F3), and residual (F4) fractions of soils from greenhouses and fields in Baiyin City, Gansu, China, which had been irrigated with treated industrial and municipal wastewater. Risk assessment (RAC) and modified risk assessment (mRAC) codes were used to estimate the environmental risks based on metal mobility. Results showed that more than half of each studied heavy metal(loid) (72.6%-97.4%) was present in the residual fraction (F4), which is non-bioavailable. Both the concentrations and percentages of metals in the bio-accessible fractions (F1, F2, and F3) showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) between rhizosphere and bulk soils. The greenhouse soils had higher concentrations and percentages of metals (except Pb) in bio-accessible fractions compared with field soils. Similarly, compared with irrigation using treated municipal wastewater, irrigation with treated industrial wastewater resulted in higher concentrations and percentages of all the studied metals in the bio-accessible fractions of soils. The average RAC value of each heavy metal(loid) in soils suggested medium risks from Zn, low risks from As, Cu, Ni, and Pb, and no risks from Cr. According to the mRAC values for 120 soil samples, there were only 13.3% of soils with no potential adverse effect, but 83.3% of soils with a low potential adverse effect and 3.3% of soils with a medium potential adverse effect.
[Analysis of Heavy Metal Sources in Farmland Soil of Sewage Irrigation and Industrial Complex Area Based on APCS-MLR and PMF]

Abstract:The contents of eight heavy metals （Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg） were determined based on the surface soil samples of sewage irrigation and industrial complex in Kaifeng City. The absolute factor analysis-multiple linear regression （APCS-MLR） model and positive matrix factorization （PMF） model were used to analyze the sources and contribution rates of heavy metals in soil combined with correlation analysis and systematic cluster analysis. The results showed that： ① The average values of ω（Cr）, ω（Ni）, ω（Cu）, ω（Zn）, ω（Cd）, ω（Pb）, ω（As）, and ω（Hg） in the study area were 52.19, 25.00, 42.03, 323.53, 1.79, 53.45, 9.43, and 0.20 mg·kg-1, respectively, and Cr, Ni, and As are lower than the background values of tidal soil. Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg are higher than the background values of the tidal soil. ② There were four sources of the eight heavy metals： natural sources, agricultural sewage irrigation sources, industrial atmospheric sedimentation sources, and transportation sources. Cr and Ni were mainly from natural sources； Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were mainly from agricultural sewage irrigation and transportation sources； As was mainly from natural sources and agricultural sewage irrigation； and Hg was mainly from industrial atmospheric sedimentation. ③ The APCS-MLR and PMF source analysis results indicated that industrial and agricultural activities were the main sources of heavy metals in the soil of the study area. The average contribution rates of APCS-MLR in the nine sampling areas of the research area were 76.01% （natural sources and agricultural sewage irrigation sources）, 22.71% （industrial atmospheric sedimentation sources and transportation sources）, and 1.28% （unknown sources）. The average contribution rates of PMF were 59.66% （natural sources and agricultural sewage irrigation sources） and 40.34% （industrial atmospheric sedimentation sources and transportation sources）. The source analysis results of the LZ, XZ, NLT, PT, YLZ, and BC models were basically consistent, and WL was better in the APCS-MLR model, whereas SG and QT were better in the PMF model. The research results can provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of soil heavy metal pollution and environmental remediation.

Abstract:The content of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni and As from 250 soil samples was measured in agricultural soil of Ningxia section of the Yellow River. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was to identify the main sources of these heavy metals; Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS) was to identify their spatial distribution and high-risk areas; and Human Health risk (HHR) model was to measure the health risk. Results showed that the average content of Cd and As exceeds the risk screening value of "Soil Environmental Quality-Agricultural Land Soil Pollution Risk Control Standard" (GB 15618-2018), which belongs to slight-level pollution. Although the content of other types of HMs (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni) is below the risk screening value, they are still included heavily in the soil (except Cr). PMF indicated that mixed sources of agriculture and industry accounted for 27.06%, natural sources accounted for 14.12%, industrial sources accounted for 23.04%, traffic sources accounted for 21.50%, and Yellow River sedimentary sources accounted for 14.28%. PMF-HHR showed that the mixed sources of agriculture and industry are the most important factor causing non-carcinogenic risk (HI) to children (accounting for 55.75%). Industrial sources and traffic sources were the two main factors that cause HI to adults (industrial sources accounted for 25.16%, and traffic sources accounted for 28.78%). Mixed sources of agriculture and industry and natural sources were the two main factors that cause carcinogenic risk (CR) (mixed sources of agriculture and industry account for 35.34%, and natural sources account for 33.23%). SGS indicated that 0.64% and 9.32% of the total areas were posing as higher HI areas to children and adults respectively; in particular, 0.68% and 1.12% of the areas were identified as higher HI of As and Cr areas at a critical probability of 0.9.

Abstract:Heavy metal speciation and the associated ecological risks were investigated, using a European Community Bureau of Reference sequential extraction procedure, in sediments from the residential, mixed (residential and industrial), and agricultural areas of rural rivers in southern Jiangsu Province, China. Compared with the background values in Jiangsu Province soils, Cd was the metal with the highest contamination level, especially in the mixed area, followed by Cu and Zn. In the sediment samples from the agricultural area, the heavy metal concentrations were no more than two times greater than the background values. There were higher proportions of Cd in the acid-soluble fraction, Cr in the residual fraction, and Pb in the reducible fraction in the three areas. The heavy metal mobility was mainly controlled by the acid-soluble and reducible fractions. Cd could pose extremely high risks to the environment. In addition, the risks of heavy metal to the environment in the three areas followed the order: mixed area > residential area > agricultural area. Furthermore, a risk assessment code analysis showed that most of the sediment samples were classified as being of high to very high risk in the residential and mixed areas because of their Cd, Ni, and Zn concentrations. Heavy metal pollution in the residential and mixed areas is generally serious, and immediate remediation measures need to be taken.

Abstract:Sewage sludge, mine tailing and dredged sediment, as well as wastewater rich in heavy metal, pose threats to biota life and their treatments are thorny issues. A novel strategy using Cr-contaminated sediment to treat wastewater containing heavy metals is proposed in this study. The Cr-contaminated sediment (Cr-CS) is used to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Experimental results show that the background Cr concentration in the sediment has little influence on the removal efficiency of total Cr under the examined conditions (300–1,000mgkg−1). The existence of organic matter favors the reduction of Cr(VI), but has limited effect on the removal of Cr(III). The total Cr removal process involves reduction, adsorption and precipitation, and is highly pH-dependent. The optimum pH values for Cr(VI) reduction and Cr(III) removal are determined as 1.0 and 4.0, respectively. The removal efficiency of total Cr under optimum conditions reaches 95.8%. The results also suggested co-existent heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Ni) were hard to release to the water under experimental conditions (i.e., the release amounts are ranged from 0.0035 to 0.055mgL−1 for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Ni, respectively, which can achieve the comprehensive sewage discharge standard). This work demonstrated that use of some heavy-metal-contaminated sediments to treat wastewater containing the same heavy metal could be a feasible approach.
