Abstract:Soil pollution by heavy metals is a major concern in China and has received much attention in recent years. Aiming to investigate the status of heavy metal pollution and the safety of vegetables in the soil of wastewater-irrigated facilities, this study investigated the distribution and migration characteristics of heavy metals in vegetable–soil systems of facilities in a typical sewage irrigation area of the Xi River, Shenyang City, northern China. Health risks due to the fact of exposure to heavy metals in the vegetable soil of facilities and ingrown vegetables through different exposure pathways were evaluated. Spatial interpolation and a potential ecological risk assessment were applied to evaluate the soil quality. Bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) were used to analyze the absorption and transportation capacity of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn by different parts of different vegetables. The results showed that the average concentration of Cd exceeded the standard values by 1.82 times and accumulated by 11 times, suggesting that Cd poses the most severe pollution among the four metals in the soil of facilities in the Xi River sewage irrigation area. In the city, a significant accumulation of Cd in the soil was identified with different spatial distributions. Cd also contributed the most in terms of the estimated potential ecological risk index, while the impacts of the other three metals were relatively small. The concentrations of heavy metals were mostly lower than the limit set by the corresponding Chinese standards. Various BCFs were observed for the four metals in the order Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb. Vegetables also demonstrated different BCFs in the order of leaf vegetables > Rhizome vegetable > Solanaceae vegetable. The magnitude of the noncarcinogenic risk for all four heavy metals was less than one for all three exposure routes and did not cause significant noncarcinogenic health effects in humans. However, the carcinogenic risk of Cd from some vegetables via dietary intake was considered higher. Protection measures should be taken to implement better pollution control and land use planning.

Abstract:Sewage irrigation solves rural water problems, pollutants in wastewater are retained in agricultural soils and enter the human body through crops, jeopardizing human health. Here, contamination features, source apportionments, and associated health risks from agricultural soils were systematically investigated in the Dongdagou Watershed. According to descriptive statistics and heavy metal evaluation, Dongdagou Watershed were mainly polluted by Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As, to different degrees. Health risk assessment results showed that the total hazard indices (THI) for preschool children were 3.20–4.11 and the total carcinogenic risks (TCR) were 9.09 × 10 –5 to 1.38 × 10 –4 . Monte Carlo simulation showed that THI values of 83.16–92.87% of children were > 1 and TCR values of 4.36–13.69% of children exceeded 10 –4 , indicating the HI risk to preschool children is unacceptable, and the carcinogenic risk could not be ignored. Positive matrix factorization analysis showed that Cd, Zn, and Cu in the soil are primarily from industrial activity, such as sewage irrigation (75.6%); Pb is primarily from atmospheric deposition; and Mn, Ni, and Hg are mainly derived from natural historical pollution sources. The source-oriented health risk assessment showed that sewage irrigation was the most important anthropogenic health risk source for children.

Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils over the Past Five Years in Zhejiang, Southeast China.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, 1999 agricultural soil samples were collected from 11 cities in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2020, and the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of 3 of the most important heavy metals, i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed. The results showed that Cd had a slightly higher sample over-standard rate of 12.06%. Spatial distribution and temporal trends showed that the Pb concentrations overall increased from 2016 to 2020 and mainly accumulated in southern Zhejiang. In addition, multiple exposure routes were evaluated for human health risks. Children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of heavy metals in agricultural soils, and oral ingestion was the major exposure route. Cr poses higher human health risks to humans than Pb and Cd in agricultural soils. Therefore, more rigid environmental monitoring and related soil remediation counter-measures for some sites with high concentrations of heavy metals are necessary to limit the potential threat to human health.

Abstract:The pollution of agricultural soil by heavy metals is a significant environmental issue that has a serious impact on human health and food security. This study focused on investigating the presence of heavy metal pollution in sewage-irrigated soils in Taiyuan city. A total of 110 soil samples were analyzed for the presence of As, Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu and Zn. The results showed that the concentrations of these metals ranged from 0.06 to 26.74 mg/kg for As, 0.00 to 0.84 mg/kg for Hg, 0.03 to 0.69 mg/kg for Cd, 44.32 to 100.09 mg/kg for Pb, 9.85 to 42.19 mg/kg for Cr, 13.38 to 53.72 mg/kg for Cu, and 42.77 to 145.47 mg/kg for Zn. The average concentrations of these metals were found to be below the risk values specified in the "Soil environmental quality (GB15618-2018)", except for As and Cd in three sampling points in Xiaodian District. The heavy metal pollution in these areas can be attributed to various sources, such as industrial activities, the use of fertilizers and pesticides, and the irrigation process. According to the geo–accumulation index, the agricultural soil in the Taiyuan irrigation area was found to be uncontaminated by Zn, Cr, Cu, and As, and lightly contaminated by Cd, Hg, and Pb. The Nemerow Pollution Index indicated that the soil at all sampling points exhibited a slight level of pollution. Moreover, the ecological risk assessment indicated that all heavy metals posed a slight level of pollution. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for the development of effective policies and measures for soil environmental protection and pollution control.

Abstract:Through soil profile sampling and with different evaluation methods,this paper assessed the contamination trend of heavy metals and POPs in a wastewater-irrigated area.The results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals Cr,As,Hg,Cd,Cu,Pb,Ni and Zn and of POPs,BHC and DDT in soil had an increasing trend.80% or more topsoils had a higher contaminants concentration than subsoils,and the contaminants concentration in 85% or more soil samples was surpassed their background value.The two POPs and heavy metals Cr,As,Hg,Cd and Cu could accumulate in soil,and continuous wastewater irrigation could make the accumulated contaminants migrate into groundwater and food chain,resulting in the hazard to environmental health.

Abstract:With the long-term application of wastewater to vegetable production fields, there is concern about potential health risks of heavy metals contaminating the edible parts of vegetables grown in contaminated soils in the suburban areas of Baoding City, China. The average concentration of elemental Zn in sewage-irrigated soil was the highest (153.77 mg kg−1), followed by Pb (38.35 mg kg−1), Cu (35.06 mg kg−1), Ni (29.81 mg kg−1), and Cd (0.22 mg kg−1) which were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those in the reference soil. The results showed that long-term sewage irrigation had led to a growing accumulation of heavy metals in the soils, especially for Cd, Zn, and Pb. Furthermore, the concentrations of elemental Cd, Zn, and Ni in vegetables (e.g., Beassica pekinensis L., Allium fistulosum L., Spinacia oleracea L.) collected from the wastewater-irrigated soils exceeded the maximum permissible limits, and this also increased the daily intake of metals by food. However, compared with the health risk index of <1 for heavy metals, the ingestion of vegetables from the soils irrigated with sewage effluent posed a low health risk. Nevertheless, heavy metal concentrations should be periodically monitored in vegetables grown in these soils together with the implementation effective remediation technologies to minimize possible impacts on human health.

Abstract:Background Different irrigation methods have variable effects on the physiochemical properties of soils. The predicted widespread replacement of flood irrigation with drip irrigation will alter the micro-environment of the associated soils in terms of migration, transformation, morphology, and toxicology of heavy metals and pesticides. The dynamics of heavy metals in soil under drip irrigation have only been investigated with regard to the use of sewage and reclaimed water; studies comparing these patterns across different irrigation methods are scarce. Purpose Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of drip and flood irrigation on heavy metal distribution in soil and the related risks in three typical agricultural systems in China. Methods We used fixed-point sampling, digestion analytical methods, descriptive analyses, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Nemerow pollution index analyses, and correlation analyses to investigate the different effects of drip and flood irrigation on heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in soils from Hebei, Xinjiang, and Ningxia Provinces, China. Results and Discussion Analyses of soil samples collected from drip-irrigated fields revealed significant differences in the concentrations of soil heavy metals at depths of 0–60 cm. Drip irrigation had a greater effect on heavy metal content in the soil surface than flood irrigation. In addition, heavy metals likely accumulated at the edges of the wetting fronts following prolonged irrigation. In comparison to drip irrigation, flood irrigation elevated pollution levels in the soil. The amount of fertiliser affected the leaching and migration of heavy metals in the soils by altering the physiochemical characteristics of the drip irrigation solution. Conclusion Drip irrigation alters the dynamics of heavy metals in soil by influencing their migration and accumulation patterns. This effect can be attributed to the methods of adding water and fertilisers to the soil under drip irrigation. Altering these variables can impact the level of heavy metals that bioaccumulate in crops. This study provides a scientific basis for reducing heavy metal pollution under drip irrigation.

Abstract:The Zhangshi Irrigation Area (ZIA) in Shenyang, China has been irrigated by industrial wastewater since 1962. Since then, parts of the ZIA have been rezoned for industrial uses, but the remaining area, named Sluice Gate III (SLIII) and Lower Reaches (LR), still occupies 1825ha. Although land irrigation with industrial wastewater ceased in 1992, a study on heavy metals in soils was carried out to assess the feasibility of agricultural crop cultivation in SLIII and LR. A detailed field investigation was conducted and both total heavy metal concentrations and bioavailable fraction in soil were determined. The results have highlighted that Cd concentrations in soils still exceed the Environmental Quality Standard for Soil in China (GB15618-1995) grade C standard in SLIII region, and grade B standard in LR. In the SLIII, Zn and Pb concentrations in soil are higher than the grade A standard, although Cu is close the grade A standard. In SLIII the dominant chemical fractions were the exchangeable and carbonatic forms, which represent up to 43% and 35% of the Cd, respectively. The Cd in these two fractionations poses the highest risk for the plant absorption and accumulation. Therefore the SLIII should be abandoned for cultivated crops to prevent the Cd contamination of food chain and any associated hazards to human health.
Changes in the regulation of calcium metabolism and bone calcium content during growth in the absence of endogenous prolactin and during hyperprolactinemia: a longitudinal study in male and female Wistar rats.

Abstract:Since endogenous prolactin has been shown to enhance food consumption, calcium absorption, and bone calcium turnover in the pregnant rat, the role of endogenous prolactin in the regulation of calcium metabolism was investigated in 3-day balance studies of female Wistar rats from the age of 3 to 11 weeks. The study was divided into two parts. In part I, calcium metabolism in males and females was compared. In part II, 3-week old female rats were divided into 5 groups: (i) control animals receiving 0.9% NaCl; (ii) animals receiving 6 mg bromocriptine/kg/day (- PRLendo group); (iii) animals receiving 2.5 mg ovine prolactin/kg/day (+PRLexo); (iv) sham-operated animals receiving 0.9% NaCl, and (v) animals with two extra pituitaries implanted under the renal capsule, receiving 0.9% NaCl (AP group). Results showed that rapid growth occurred between 3 and 6 weeks with maximum fractional calcium absorption and calcium retention at 5 weeks of age in both sexes. The data also showed a physiological significance of endogenous prolactin in enhancing calcium absorption and retention in 5 week old rats. In an absence of prolactin, peak calcium absorption was delayed in 7-week old animals, and vertebral calcium content of 11-week old animals was reduced by 18%. Hyperprolactinemia in the AP group was found to enhance fractional calcium absorption and calcium retention at 7, 9, and 11 weeks and increased the femoral calcium content by 16%. It could be concluded that a physiological role of prolactin is the stimulation of calcium absorption and maintainance of bone calcium content during growth and development.
Risk assessment of soil heavy metals associated with land use variations in the riparian zones of a typical urban river gradient.

Abstract:Urbanization-induced land use changes in riparian area alter soil and water regimes in complex ways, which may also affect the migration and transformation of soil heavy metals and increase the risk of release. In this study, soil samples from the riparian zone of Beiyun River, which located in the rapidly urbanized Beijing metropolis, were collected and analyzed for heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn). Then their zoning distribution pattern along river (section 1 to section 4 from upper to low reaches) and the correlation of heavy metals between riparian soils and riverine sediments were investigated. Results showed that the average soil heavy metal concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn in riparian zone were approximately 2.2, 1.7, 1.9 and 2.0 times higher than the background values. Sectionally, the concentrations of Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn displayed a decreasing order with section 2 > section 3 > section 4 > section 1, while the highest values of Cr and Cu were found in section 3. The concentrations of all heavy metals except Cr in artificial garden land were higher than those in other land use types, and the concentrations of Cr among five land use types were in the order of grass land > farmland > artificial garden land > forest land > forest-grass land. Generally, most of the heavy metals in the riverine sediments had higher contents than those in riparian zones, especially Cu and Zn. There was a decreasing order for the average geo-accumulation index (Igeo) of measured heavy metals in the soils of riparian zone: Zn (0.15) > Cr (0.08) > Cu (0.07) > Cd (−0.08) > As (−0.57) > Pb (−0.67) > Mn (−0.75) > Ni (−0.86), whereas they had different “high-low” orders in different land use types. The Igeo index indicated most regions of riparian zone were moderately polluted with Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn, especially in grass land and forest land. Also, Cd, Cr and Zn in riparian zone have positive relationships with the concentrations in riverine sediments. Health risk assessment showed that the contribution of ingestion HQ to HI was the highest among the three exposure pathways (ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact), and children had higher non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk index than adult. Our findings suggest that land use and soil in riparian zone should be protected and managed scientifically to control the riverine pollution and ensure human health.
Risk Assessment and Source Analysis of Soil Heavy Metal(oid)s Pollution in Beijing, China

Abstract:Investigating heavy metal(oid)s (HMs) in urban soils is vital to safeguarding human life and health. This study investigated HMs in soils in urban areas of Beijing, assessed their ecological and health risks, and combined principal component analysis, geostatistical analysis, and positive definite matrix factor decomposition models to analyze them retrospectively. Although the Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soils of the study area were all below national quality standards, the average levels were 1.55, 1.17, and 1.21 times higher than the background values for HMs in Beijing soils, respectively, indicating the presence of HMs enrichment in the surface soils. Neither of the nine HMs in this study caused ecological risk. The health risk assessment results show that the nine HMs in this study do not yet pose a non-carcinogenic risk. Ni and Cu have significant carcinogenic effects on humans, and children are more susceptible to carcinogenic risks, with direct ingestion being the main route of HMs exposure. The main sources of HMs pollution in soils are industrial activities, soil-forming matrices and historical sites, which account for 32.89%, 44.16%, and 22.95% of total HMs accumulation respectively. We have found that V, Mn, Co, As, Ni, and Cr are mainly from parent material, Zn and Pb are mainly from industrial emissions, and Cu is from historical remains.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization a major factor affecting heavy metal contamination on suburban agricultural soils. In order to assess the dynamic contamination of heavy metals in soil from agricultural land bordering a rapidly urbanizing area and the transfer of human health risks from contaminants in this process, 186 and 293 soil samples from agricultural land in suburban Chengdu were collected in September 2008 and September 2017, respectively. Several indicators, such as the integrated pollution index (PI) and the potential ecological risk index (RI), were employed for analyzing the heavy metal contamination levels, and the APCS-MLR receptor model were applied for analyzing the heavy metal sources. As a result, mean concentrations for five elements did not exceed the national soil pollution risk screening values in the two periods mentioned above. Nemerow's composite contamination index revealed an increase in soil contamination of arable land after 10 years of urbanization, with 3.75 and 1.02% of light and moderate sample plots, respectively, by 2017. The assessment for potential ecological risk indicated an increased level of eco-risk to high for most of the sample plots. Based on the APCS-MLR model, the origin and contribution to the five elements varied considerably between the two periods mentioned above. Among them, soil Pb changed from "industrial source" to "transportation source," soil Cr changed from "natural source" to "transportation source," and As and Hg changed from "industrial source" to "transportation source." As and Hg were associated with agricultural activities in both periods, and Cd was derived from industrial activities in both periods. The study suggests that inhalation has become a major contributor to non-cancer health risks in urbanization, unlike intake routes in previous periods, and that the increase in cancer risk is mainly due to children's consumption of agricultural products with As residues. The change in the main source of As to "transportation" also indicates a decrease in air quality during urbanization and the development of the transportation industry. This study provides a reference for the governments of rapidly urbanizing cities to formulate relevant highway and agricultural policies to safeguard the health of the people based on the current situation.

Abstract:The level of concentration of heavy metal in soil is detrimental to soil quality. The Heigangkou-Liuyuankou irrigation area in the lower-reach of Yellow River irrigation, as home to a large population and a major site to agricultural production, is vulnerable to heavy metal pollution. This study examined soil quality in Heigangkou-Liuyuankou irrigation areas of Kaifeng, China. Pollution in soil and potential risks introduced by heavy metal accumulation were assessed using Nemerow, Geoaccumulation, and Hakanson's ecological risk indices. Statistics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to model and present the spatiotemporal changes of the pollution sources and factors affecting the levels of pollution. The heavy metals found in the sampled soil are Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg. Among them, Cd is more concentrated than the others. The southwestern region of the studied area confronts the most serious heavy metal pollution. There exist spatial disparities of low concentrations of different heavy metals in the study area. Hg and Cd are found to pose the highest potential ecological risks. However, their risk levels are not the same across the study area. Levels concentration of Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg in soil are highly correlated. In combination, they post an additional threat to the ecological environment. Transportation, rural settlements, and water bodies are found to be the major sources of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg pollution in the soil; among the major sources, transportation is the most significant factor.

Abstract:To understand the heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils along the East River basin and assess the pollution related health effect to local residents, interviews and archived data were obtained to identify the study sites affected by polluted tailing. Soil samples were collected and tested for heavy metal content and the Comprehensive Pollution Index (CPI). The degree of pollution of agricultural soils in the area was assessed using GIS-based Spatial distribution map of heavy metals and the trend of soil heavy metal risk. Two villages (Matian and Zhudui) near the East River were included in this study for health effect assessment. A total of 193 residents aged 15 or above from each village were tested for the present status of chronic diseases. Convenient sampling method was used to collect blood samples from 78 residents for heavy metal concentration. The contents of Pb, Cd, As, Zn, and Cu in the agricultural soils were all over the standards with a moderate to severe CPI. Among these metals, Cd was the highest followed by Pb, and Cu was the lowest. The contents of Pb, Cd, As, and Zn tend to be higher in soils closer to the river. The prevalence of chronic diseases was over 30%, which is significantly higher than the report from the national central region (23.15%). The average blood lead level (BLL) among children under 14 years is 7.42 μg/dL. Although the adults in Matian village had a significantly higher BLL (χ2 = 8.70, p = 0.03) as compared to Zhudui village, there was no significant difference for the prevalence of chronic diseases between the two villages (χ2 = 3.23, p = 0.09). The mean BLL of children and the proportion of children with BLL ≥ 10 μg/dL in this study are equivalent to the national average. The higher BLL concentration and prevalence of chronic diseases in adults might be due to their long-term exposure to heavy metal contamination environment and higher background level of heavy metals. Findings from this study will form the baseline information for local government to the development of effective approaches to control the heavy metal contamination and reduce the pollution related adverse health effect on local residents.

Abstract:This study provides an overview of the studies of heavy metal pollution regarding As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn and Ni in the urban soils throughout 71 cities of China, based on data from online literature, during the period 2003–2019. The concentrations, spatial distributions, contamination degrees and health risks of heavy metals in the urban soils were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the mean values of eight heavy metals all exceeded the soil background values in China, and the kriging interpolation method showed that the hot-spot cities with heavy metal contamination in urban soils were mainly concentrated in the southwest, southcentral, southeast coast, northcentral and northwest regions of China. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicated that Hg and Cd were at moderate contamination levels and that the levels of the other six metals did not appear contamination. The pollution index (PI) showed that Cd and Hg reached high contamination levels, and the other metals reached moderate contamination levels. The integrated pollution index (IPI) and potential ecological risk index (PRI) indicated that the integral urban soils in the study areas ranked high contamination levels and moderate ecological risk degree, respectively, and Cd and Hg should be labeled as priority metals for control in the urban soils around China. The human health risk assessments for the heavy metals indicated that ingestion was the dominant exposure pathway for having adverse effects on human health. The mean Hazard index (HI) values of eight heavy metals all showed that adverse effects on human health were unlikely, and the mean carcinogenic (CR) values of As, Cr and Ni for children and adults all suggested an acceptable carcinogenic risk to human beings. In addition, children exposed to these heavy metals faced more serious non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health threats compared to adults. The results could provide valuable information for demanding the better control of heavy metal pollution and mitigation of the adverse effects on residents by environmental regulators in national urban regions.

Abstract:PurposeMore and more wastewater is used to irrigate in many regions as an alternative resources due to the growing shortage of global water. However, little documented investigations are presented about the effects of wastewater irrigation on deep profile soil. The aim of this study was to investigate the vertical effect for soil properties, heavy metals, and antibiotics after swine wastewater irrigation in Hebei Province, China.MethodsSoil samples were collected with 300-cm depth from three sites where the wastewater irrigation was used for different years (1 year, 3 years, and 5 years). The soil properties, heavy metals, and antibiotics were determined and their correlation was analyzed. The ecological risk of heavy metals and antibiotics was evaluated.ResultsThe results showed that the soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium were higher in plots irrigated by wastewater than those in the control plots irrigated by the groundwater at 0–20-cm depth soil, which increased by 34.9–64.9%, 40.7–57.2%, 67.6–390.0%, and 35.4–240.9%, respectively. On the other hand, the soil salinity in deep soil increased compared with the control, which might pose high risks to the soil salinization. The accumulation of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu) in the soil were higher than that in the control, with the increase range from 0.75 to 222.6%. The detected frequency of tetracycline antibiotics (chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, and doxycycline) was much higher in the soil with 5-year wastewater irrigation than that irrigated for 1 and 3 years. Heavy metals and antibiotics were detected in deep soil (> 100 cm), and they may migrate downward and cause groundwater pollution. The results of geoaccumulation index of heavy metals and antibiotics risk quotient revealed that the pollution in swine wastewater irrigation area were low. Correlation analysis showed that the accumulation of heavy metals in soil was significantly negatively correlated to pH and positively correlated to soil nutrients (organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus). Chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline were positively correlated with soil nutrients, and chlortetracycline exhibited positive correlation with Zn, resulting in co-contamination.ConclusionOur results overall indicated that wastewater irrigation can enhance soil fertility, while it may also introduce heavy metals and antibiotics. However, short-term wastewater reuse could be used to alleviate the problem of water shortage in extremely arid areas.

Abstract:During the past decades, heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil and its impact on human health have been becoming one of the most important global environmental problems. In this research, heavy metal (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, As, Hg) concentrations were measured for four hundred and two soil samples collected from agricultural area within the Guangzhou-Foshan urban zone. Soil heavy metal pollution was evaluated used geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index. The dose response model proposed by the USEPA was used to estimate the potential health risk caused by heavy metals in agricultural soil. The results showed that: 1) Cd and Hg were the main heavy metal pollutants in agricultural soil of the study area. 89.1% and 93.3% of total soil samples suffered medium to heavy potential ecological risk caused by Cd and Hg, respectively. 2) The THI and TCR were respectively greater than 1.0 and 1.0×10−4, indicating that heavy metals in agricultural soil were likely to constitute non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, both of which were mainly brought by product consumption, to the public in the study area. The non-carcinogenic risks were mainly caused by Cr and As, while the carcinogenic risks were mainly from Cr, Cd, and As.

Abstract:Sewage sludge (SS) is commonly used as agricultural fertilizer worldwide. However, the toxic metal(loid)s in SS raises concerns about soil contamination and the potential risks to human health. This study, conducted since 2007 on the North China Plain, examines the impact of SS use on crops. An experiment was designed with five treatments: conventional fertilization (CK) and four levels of SS application (W1, W2, W3, and W4: 4.5, 9.0, 18.0, and 36.0 t ha-1, respectively). Soil concentrations of eight toxic metal(loid)s (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, As, and Hg) were analyzed to assess pollution risk using various indices. Health risks associated with maize and wheat grains were also evaluated. Additionally, the impact of long-term SS application on crop yield, soil quality, and human health within a wheat-maize rotation system was examined. SS application increased wheat and maize yields by 5.37 to 19.08 % and 6.97 to 17.94 %, respectively, across treatments W2 to W4. Despite the toxic metal(loid)s in the grains remaining within safe limits, their concentrations showed an upward trend, especially under the W4 treatment. Moreover, SS application significantly increased the soil Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Hg levels (P < 0.05) without exceeding the national standards. The geo-accumulation index values revealed rising pollution levels for Zn, Cu, Cd, and Hg, which shifted from no contamination to moderate contamination and then to moderate-to-high contamination, yet the overall pollution level remained safe. Soil ecological risks increased from moderate to serious, with Hg posing the greatest risk, particularly under the W4 treatment. Long-term crop intake from the area significantly exposed children and adults to As, contributing 42.12 % and 34.62 % to hazard index (HI), respectively. The HI values for toxic metal(loid)s in these grains surpassed one in both age groups, suggesting health risks from long-term SS cultivated crops.
