Abstract:The paper presents several assistive technology solutions that may be used to help people with moderate to severe/profound intellectual and multiple disabilities reach relevant goals such as strengthening object-manipulation and ambulation responses and carrying out multistep tasks. For each of the technology solutions, the paper examines (a) the specific function (i.e. the way it helps people achieve the goal targeted) and (b) the possible role over time (i.e. whether it might serve as a temporary or permanent form of support). The basic functions of the assistive technology solutions presented entail: increasing people's motivation, supplementing people's cognition (working memory), and bridging the gap between people's motor, sensory/orientation, and verbal functioning and the functioning level required to achieve the goals targeted. Based on the knowledge available to date, the role of the technology solutions over time may be considered: (a) modifiable, with the possibility of reducing or even completely fading out the use of such solutions, when their function is to increase people's motivation or support people's cognitive/memory performance, and (b) practically unalterable when their function is to bridge the gap between people's limited sensory, motor, and verbal skills and the skill level required to reach a relevant goal.

Abstract:The use of assistive technology (AT) for people with disabilities is well researched and prevalent in education. Growing numbers of students now self-identify as having mental health diagnoses and register for accommodations at post-secondary institutions. The apparent gap in the literature specifically relating to AT support in this population necessitated a more systematic search. This scoping review maps the literature regarding AT interventions to support young adults with mental health disabilities in post-secondary institutions such as universities and colleges.Four major databases were searched for topic keywords. s and final papers were screened against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with seven studies identified as relevant.The reported common problems faced by students were academic, psychosocial and cognitive in nature and they affected day-to-day activities. AT identified loosely fit into the categories of note-taking alternatives, smartphones, multimedia presentations to support text material, alternate participation supports, graphic organizers, text-to-speech software, and other AT writing and visualization tools.Future research is needed on outcomes of AT implementation in this population and to explore the apparent lack of awareness of these supports by students and service providers, as evidenced by the limited research identified by this scoping review.There appears to be a gap in access to assistive technology (AT) to students with mental health disabilities, except when the student has concurrent physical or learning disabilitiesThese students have additional barriers as they have little or no prior knowledge of AT, having not been previously identified in high school as needing or receiving ATAT rehabilitation would level the playing field for students with mental health disabilities, making education and student participation more accessible thus improving overall student experience

Abstract:As a field, the majority of our research tends to focus on the design and application of assistive products to solve real world challenges for people with disabilities and functional limitations. In these cases, the focus of the work is typically on the product – how the product is designed, the technology required to make it work, and the experience of individuals who use the product. This is a vital area of research which has propelled the field forward significantly, paving the way for the development and application of both new and reimagined technologies, and understanding the best ways to solve challenges of everyday life. However, research suggests there is a relationship between satisfaction with assistive products, including their use and potential for abandonment, and the services provided to deliver that product (Larsson Ranada & Lidström, Citation 2019 ).

Stakeholder perspectives on research and development priorities for mobility assistive-technology: a literature review

Abstract:Purpose: Over one billion people with disabilities (PWDs) and older adults with mobility impairment are currently in need of assistive technology devices (ATDs) and only 10% of those population have ordinarily access to them. The need for advancement in mobility-assistive technology is growing to address the gap in ATDs provision globally. The purpose of this review is to identify potential future areas of development and research in mobility-assistive technology.Method: Publications were identified using scientific and medical electronic databases. Also, a limited grey literature search was conducted to muster a variety of sources. A combination of keyword search terms was used, corresponding to the medical subject heading (MeSH) terms.Results: A total of 392 articles were identified, of which 75 were selected for detailed review. Twenty-eight articles were identified that met the review's inclusion criteria. Future areas of research for mobility-assistive technology were identified by grouping the publications into four main categories. The findings of this review identified several areas of research and development in ATDs in general and mobility-assistive technology, in particular, with special attention to the importance of engaging users and stakeholders in the process of research and design.Conclusions: It is apparent that users' needs and priorities vary between regions within countries. The majority of studies were noted to mainly identify consumers' perspectives on a national basis. The authors, therefore, suggest that further research should be conducted on a global level to determine the knowledge and perspectives concerning future research and development needs and priorities in mobility-assistive technologies.Despite the benefits derived from the use of ATDs, only 10% of people with disabilities have access to them.Increasing access, quality and affordable ATDs in all countries is global demand.Identifying mobility consumers' needs and priorities would help in enhancing their quality of life by translating research into new technologies that meet their environment and culture needs.Users' involvement in research and design process is a crucial approach to re-shape the future research agenda.

Abstract:The field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has witnessed significant changes since its inception. AAC services are now considered for a much greater number of individuals with complex communication needs and there are many more AAC options available as communication supports, including a proliferation of technologies. The scope and options for communication within society have increased substantially to include a wide array of digital and social media. Individuals with complex communication needs have increased expectations for participation and engagement across a full range of environments-education, employment, family, healthcare, and community living. Despite these advances, there remain critical challenges that must be addressed. This paper discusses key advances in the AAC field, delineates challenges, and discusses future directions to address these challenges, specifically as they relate to research and development to enhance AAC interventions and technologies for individuals with complex communication needs and their families.

Immunological analysis of cloned Schistosoma mansoni antigens Sm31 and Sm32 with sera of schistosomiasis patients.

Abstract:Two immunogenic proteins, Sm31 and Sm32, originating from the gut of Schistosoma mansoni were evaluated for their potential as recombinant immunodiagnostic reagents. Sm31 and Sm32 cDNA fragments were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli as polypeptides fused to RNA polymerase of bacteriophage MS2. The recombinant proteins were tested in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) with paired sera of 182 persons from Mali with S. mansoni and S. haematobium infections collected before and one year after treatment with praziquantel. Pretreatment sera of the study population gave a strong antibody response to Sm31 and Sm32 in immunoblots of total worm extract with the sera. The sensitivities of both western blotting (86%) and ELISA (75%) using Sm31 and Sm32 fusion proteins compared well with a single egg count (84%). Chemotherapy resulted in an overall decline of egg counts. Posttreatment sera gave significantly lower reactivities than the pretreatment sera. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of detecting circulating antibodies with recombinant antigens in schistosomiasis.

Abstract:Millions of individuals who have limited or no functional speech use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology to participate in daily life and exercise the human right to communication. While advances in AAC technology lag significantly behind those in other technology sectors, mainstream technology innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) present potential for the future of AAC. However, a new future of AAC will only be as effective as it is responsive to the needs and dreams of the people who rely upon it every day. AAC innovation must reflect an iterative, collaborative process with AAC users. To do this, we worked collaboratively with AAC users to complete participatory qualitative research about AAC innovation through AI. We interviewed 13 AAC users regarding (1) their current AAC engagement; (2) the barriers they experience in using AAC; (3) their dreams regarding future AAC development; and (4) reflections on potential AAC innovations. To analyze these data, a rapid research evaluation and appraisal was used. Within this article, the themes that emerged during interviews and their implications for future AAC development will be discussed. Abstract:Abstract Background Although particular technologies can enhance the quality of life (QoL) of people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (we use the term pervasive support needs), their objectives and outcomes are understudied. A systematic literature review was therefore conducted to explore this topic. Method A search of four databases yielded 64 studies. Data were extracted on their general characteristics, methods and sample characteristics as well as the technology types, QoL domains and application within ecological systems. A narrative synthesis was subsequently developed. Results Most of the studies applied assistive technology (AT) and focused on personal development and self‐determination on an individual level. Conclusions Technology can enhance the QoL of people with pervasive support needs. There are indications that although MT and UD‐based technology are used in practice, few studies have examined these technologies. Therefore, there is a knowledge gap regarding the kinds of technology that are used in practice.

Assistive Technology Makerspaces Promote Capability of Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Abstract:Makerspaces can engage people with disabilities in the design and development of assistive technology (AT) that can enhance their capabilities to perform new activities and function. However, the adoption of makerspaces in the environments and institutions serving people with disabilities remains challenging. The authors modeled a makerspace training program, an environmental intervention, based on the capability approach framework. This mixed methods study investigates the feasibility of an 8-week program to train adults (n = 5) with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and staff members (n = 5) at a community services center. Study outcomes were measured using knowledge tests, surveys, QUEST 2.0 and interviews. Results indicate a significant increase in staff's knowledge (p = 0.035) and familiarity with program topics (p < 0.05). Participants with IDD were highly satisfied with the ease of use, weight and effectiveness of the AT devices they created. Five themes emerged from the thematic analysis of interviews: (1) inclusive environment, (2) freedom and improved Capability for building technology for self or client, (3) multidisciplinary collaboration, (4) interactive program elements, (5) makerspace challenges. Overall, the makerspace training program is a valuable program that empowers people with disabilities and ensures the realization of their right of autonomy to create their own AT.

Abstract:Many individuals with disabilities and/or chronic conditions (da/cc) experience symptoms that may require intermittent or on-going medical care. However, healthcare is an often-overlooked domain for accessibility work, where access needs associated with temporary and long-term disability must be addressed to increase the utility of physical and digital interactions with healthcare workers and spaces. Our work focuses on a specific domain of healthcare often used by individuals with da/cc: physical therapy (PT). Through a twelve-person interview study, we examined how people's access to PT for their da/cc is hampered by social (e.g., physically visiting a PT clinic) and physiological (e.g., chronic pain) barriers, and how technology could improve PT access. In-person PT is often inaccessible to our participants due to lack of transportation and insufficient insurance coverage. As such, many of our participants relied on at-home PT to manage their da/cc symptoms and work towards PT goals. Participants felt that PT barriers, such as having particularly bad symptoms or feeling short on time, could be addressed with well-designed technology that flexibly adapts to the person's dynamically changing needs while supporting their PT goals. We introduce core design principles (adaptability, movement tracking, community building) and tensions (insurance) to consider when developing technology to support PT access. Rethinking da/cc access to PT from a lens that includes social and physiological barriers presents opportunities to integrate accessibility and adaptability into PT technology.
On/off switchable high-Q capacitive-piezoelectric AlN resonators

Abstract:Voltage-controlled on/off switching based on electrode collapse around a 301-MHz capacitive-piezoelectric AlN contour-mode disk resonator has been demonstrated while still allowing on-state Q's as high as 8,800 - the highest yet demonstrated around 300MHz in sputtered AlN. The key to on/off switching of this device is the structure of its capacitive-piezoelectric transducer, which provides a suspended electrode atop the suspended AlN resonator that can be pulled electrostatically towards the substrate, pinning the combined resonator-electrode structure to the substrate, thereby opening new conduits for energy loss that suppress signal transmission. This on/off switchability obviates the signal path micromechanical switches needed by conventional attached-electrode AlN resonator counterparts. The Q approaching 9,000, together with the demonstrated on/off switchability and electromechanical coupling keff2 up to 0.78%, make this capacitive-piezoelectric resonator a strong contender among resonator technologies targeting RF channel-selecting communication front-ends.

Abstract:The potential of technology to connect people and provide access to education, commerce, employment and entertainment has never been greater or more rapidly changing. Communication technologies and new media promise to ‘revolutionize our lives’ by breaking down barriers and expanding access for disabled people. Yet, it is also true that technology can create unexpected and under‐critiqued forms of social exclusion for disabled people. In addition to exploring some of the ways that even (or especially) assistive technology can result in new forms of social exclusion, we also propose alternative ways of thinking about inclusive and accessible (as opposed to assistive) technology and provide some very practical ways that accessible technologies would promote greater access and flexibility for disabled students and adults. We contend that technology should be conceived of as a global, accessible and inclusive concept, not one that requires a qualifier based on who it is for.

Abstract:Technology is a common occurrence in almost every elementary classroom today. In this research study, I am going to be discussing how technology can have both a positive and negative effect on students who have disabilities. My research methods included conducting an online survey and two interviews with parents and teachers. Through my research, I found that there are many concerns with how technology is used in the classroom, but for the most part it ends in a positive outcome for the students. However, there is always room for improvement when using digital technologies, and my research demonstrates that it takes cooperation between the parents and the teachers for technology to truly be successful for an elementary student. As a teacher candidate, my findings have shown how important technology is to elementary students, and how, when used in an appropriate manner, technology can be an incredible tool for students with disabilities to use.

"I Am Not an Engineer": Understanding How Clinicians Design & Alter Assistive Technology

Abstract:In the emerging maker movement, clinicians have long played an advisory role in the development of customized assistive technology (AT). Recently, there has been a growing interest in including clinicians as builders of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) AT. To identify the needs of clinicians-as-makers, we investigated the challenges that clinicians faced as they volunteered in an AT building project where they were the primary designers and builders of assistive mobility devices for children. Through observation and co-building of modified ride-on toy cars with clinicians, we found that the rapid pace of development and transient relationship between user and builder did not allow for a complete assessment of the child's mobility. Furthermore, clinicians struggled to actualize concepts borne out of their clinical intent due to a lack of engineering skill. This study highlights the need for tools that support clinicians-as-makers in the AT maker process and a new conceptualization of the role of DIY-AT maker programs within the AT provider ecosystem.

Abstract:The advancement of technology has progressed faster than any other field in the world and with the development of these new technologies, it is important to make sure that these tools can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities. Accessibility options in computing devices help ensure that everyone has the same access to advanced technologies. Unfortunately, for those who require more unique and sometimes challenging accommodations, such as people with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS), the most commonly used accessibility features are simply not enough. While assistive technology for those with ALS does exist, it requires multiple peripheral devices that can become quite expensive collectively. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a more affordable and readily available option for ALS assistive technology that can be implemented on a smartphone or tablet.

[Funding programs in the research field old age and technology : Discourse analysis of calls for proposals]

Abstract:Background: A research funding field has been established throughout Europe for the development and use of (digital) technologies for older people to strengthen their autonomy and participation. In the research practice, however, it is hypothesized that there are problems that partly result from the funding programs. Objective: The analysis of calls for proposals from a critical gerontological perspective should reveal possible causes. In doing so, the implicit ideas of age, technologies and their interrelationships of the calls for proposals are reconstructed. Material and methods: The sample consisted of calls for proposals of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (2006-2021), which were examined by a discourse analysis. In addition, the identified discourse is interpreted in the sense of Foucault as a powerful discourse that influences the research field. Results: Old age is considered to be deficient and older people as being incompetent with respect to technology. Technologies are seen as having great potential for solving the problems associated with old age on individual, institutional and societal levels. The fact that the discourse unfolds its effect in research practice is clarified through its contextualisation. Discussion: The strong focus on technologies means that problems of older people that cannot be solved with technologies are neglected. This leads to power inequalities in projects as well as to the fact that the development process is guided less by needs than by innovations. The construction of age as deficient also flows into research practice and determines the product design. Conclusion: With this critical cultural gerontological view of research funding, implicit problems that need to be addressed can be made visible.

Abstract:This paper is based on work from the Global Research, Innovation, and Education on Assistive Technology (GREAT) Summit that was coordinated by WHO's Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE). The purpose of this paper is to describe the needs and opportunities embedded in the assistive product lifecycle as well as issues relating to the various stages of assistive product mobilization worldwide. The paper discusses assistive technology product terminology and the dangers of focusing on products outside the context and rolling out products without a plan. Additionally, the paper reviews concepts and issues around technology transfer, particularly in relation to meeting global needs and among countries with limited resources. Several opportunities are highlighted including technology advancement and the world nearing a state of readiness through a developing capacity of nations across the world to successfully adopt and support the assistive technology products and applications. The paper is optimistic about the future of assistive technology products reaching the people that can use it the most and the excitement across large and small nations in increasing their own capacities for implementing assistive technology. This is expressed as hope in future students as they innovate and in modern engineering that will enable assistive technology to pervade all corners of current and potential marketplaces. Importantly, the paper poses numerous topics where discussions are just superficially opened. The hope is that a set of sequels will follow to continue this critical dialog. Implications for Rehabilitation Successful assistive technology product interventions are complex and include much more than the simple selection of the right product. Assistive technology product use is highly context sensitive in terms of an individual user's environment. The development of assistive technology products is tricky as it must be contextually sensitive to the development environment and market as well. As a field we have much to study and develop around assistive technology product interventions from a global perspective.

Abstract:Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, Ahead of Print. BackgroundIn recent decades, there has been a widespread adoption of digital devices among the non-disabled population. The pervasive integration of digital devices has revolutionized how the majority of the population manages daily activities. Most of us now depend on digital platforms and services to conduct activities across the domains of communication, finance, healthcare, and work. However, a clear disparity exists for people who live with severe quadriplegia, who largely lack access to tools that would enable them to perform daily tasks digitally and communicate effectively with their environment.ObjectivesThe purpose of this piece is to (i) highlight the unmet needs of people with severe quadriplegia (including cases for medical necessity and perspectives from the community), (ii) present the current landscape of assistive technology for people with severe quadriplegia, (iii) make the case for implantable BCIs (how they address needs and why they are a good solution relative to other assistive technologies), and (iv) present future directions.ResultsThere are technologies that are currently available to this population, but these technologies are certainly not usable with the same level of ease, efficiency, or autonomy as what has been designed for the non-disabled community. This hinders the ability of people with severe quadriplegia to achieve digital autonomy, perpetuating social isolation and limiting the expression of needs, opinions, and preferences.ConclusionMost importantly, the gap in digital equality fundamentally undermines the basic human rights of people with severe quadriplegia.
