Abstract:The hydrodeoxygenation of methyl palmitate into long-chain hydrocarbon is one of the most effective technologies for the production of alternative bio-diesel. But the development of non-sulphided Ni based catalysts with high hexadecane yield and excellent catalytic stability is still a challenge. In this work, a series of Ni/MgAl2O4, Mo/MgAl2O4 and NiMo/MgAl2O4 catalysts are prepared by the wetness impregnated method. The physical-chemical property and catalytic performance for the hydrodeoxygenation of methyl palmitate of all catalysts are investigated. The characteristic results indicate that Ni-MoOx composites with metallic Ni covered by the MoOx species are formed for NiMo/MgAl2O4 catalysts. The introduction of MoOx reduces the size of bimetallic particles and the electron transfer from Ni to MoOx improves the H-spillover effect. Furthermore, more oxygen vacancies and acid sites of NiMo/MgAl2O4 catalysts effectively promote the production of hexadecane via the hydrodeoxygenation pathway. Owing to these modifications, NiMo/MgAl2O4 reveal significantly improved catalytic performance and the Ni1Mo1/MgAl2O4 catalyst with Ni/Mo mass ratio of 1:1 demonstrates the highest pentadecane and hexadecane total yield of 92.0%. Additionally, the C15/C16 molar ratio over the Ni1Mo1/MgAl2O4 catalyst is only 1.63, suggesting enhanced hydrodeoxygenation pathway and less carbon emission. Moreover, the long-term test of 60 h indicates that the Ni1Mo1/MgAl2O4 catalyst reveals excellent catalytic stability due to the less carbon deposition and more stable support structure. Therefore, this work has provided an effective method for the design of Ni based catalysts for the production of the green diesel.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphide nanoparticles supported on silica were used as catalysts to investigate the hydrodeoxygenation of methyl laurate (used as a model compound for vegetable oils). Ni2P, Ni1Mo1P, and Ni1.6Mo0.4P were synthesized using a molecular precursor route. The nanoparticles were added to the silica support without any changes in their structure or particle size. As a reference and for comparison, MoP/SiO2 was also prepared by the phosphite method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and chemical analysis. A higher conversion is reached with the MoP/SiO2 monometallic catalyst, close to that with Ni1Mo1P/SiO2. However, this observation is misleading because the differences in dispersion obscure the result that the intrinsic activity (turnover frequency) of the bimetallic catalyst, prepared by a molecular precursor route, is significantly higher than that of the monometallic catalyst, prepared by the phosphite route, revealing a synergistic effect on the catalytic activity due to the formation of the bimetallic phosphide.

Abstract:Metal phosphides have been identified as a promising class of materials for the catalytic upgrading of bio-oils, which are renewable and potentially inexpensive sources for liquid fuels. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a series of solid, phase-pure metal phosphide nanoparticles (NPs) (Ni2P, Rh2P, and Pd3P) utilizing commercially available, air-stable metal phosphine complexes in a one-pot reaction. This single-source molecular precursor route provides an alternative method to access metal phosphide NPs with controlled phases and without the formation of metal NP intermediates that can lead to hollow particles. The formation of the Ni2P NPs was shown to proceed through an amorphous Ni-P intermediate, leading to the desired NP morphology and metal-rich phase. This low-temperature, rapid route to well-defined metal NPs is expected to have broad applicability to a variety of readily available or easily synthesized metal phosphine complexes with high decomposition temperatures. Hydrodeoxygenation of acetic acid, an abundant bio-oil component, was performed to investigate H-2 activation and deoxygenation pathways under conditions that are relevant to ex situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (high temperatures, low pressures, and near-stoichiometric H-2 concentrations). The catalytic performance of the silica-supported metal phosphide NPs was compared to the analogous incipient wetness (IW) metal and metal phosphide catalysts over the range 200-500 degrees C. Decarbonylation was the primary pathway for H-2 incorporation in the presence of all of the catalysts except NP-Pd3P, which exhibited minimal productive activity, and IW-Ni, which evolved H-2. The highly controlled NP-Ni2P and NP-Rh2P catalysts, which were stable under these conditions, behaved comparably to the IW-metal phosphides, with a slight shift to higher product onset temperatures, likely due to the presence of surface ligands. Most importantly, the NP-Ni2P catalyst exhibited H-2 activation and incorporation, in contrast to IW-Ni, indicating that the behavior of the metal phosphide is significantly different from that of the parent metal, and more closely resembles that of noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:BACKGROUND One‐stage hydroconversion of fatty‐acid based feedstocks is a promising way to obtain high‐quality fuels. This process is based on hydrodeoxygenation, isomerization and hydrocracking reactions. In this work, Ni2P/Al2O3‐zeolite catalysts were synthesized and tested in hydroconversion of a model compound – methyl palmitate. RESULTS Ni2P catalysts were prepared by in situ phosphidation of metallic Ni/Al2O3‐zeolite precursors by PPh3. Mixtures of zeolite (30 wt%) and boehmite were peptized and extruded to obtain the support granules. SAPO‐11, ZSM‐5, ZSM‐22, ZSM‐23 and ZSM‐12 were used as a zeolite component. The catalysts and supports were characterized by a range of physicochemical methods: chemical analysis (ICP‐AES), low‐temperature N2 adsorption, H2‐temperature programmed reduction, NH3‐temperature programmed desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and 27Al and 31P magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance. The catalysts were studied in methyl palmitate hydroconversion (one‐stage hydrodeoxygenation‐isomerization‐hydrocracking) in a continuous‐flow fixed bed reactor at 290–340 °C, 2 MPa, H2/feed = 600 Ncm3/cm3 and LHSV = 5.3 h−1. SAPO‐11 containing sample showed high selectivity to C15 and C16 iso‐alkanes (63%, at 340 °C), and all ZSM‐containing samples showed high selectivity to cracked C5–C9 products (55–100%, at 340 °C) with varying amounts of iso‐alkanes (31–57%, at 340 °C). CONCLUSION The results show that by choosing the zeolite component of the catalyst it is possible to finely tune product quality in the range from low‐temperature diesel fuel to jet fuel or gasoline. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abstract:Alumina-supported CoMo catalyst is a potential alternative to the precious metal-based counterpart for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of stearic acid to diesel-range hydrocarbons. The mole ratio of individual metals in bimetallic catalysts plays a vital role in forming various catalytically active species. This study thus elucidates the impact of the Co/Mo mole ratio on the efficacy of CoMo catalysts. The CoMo catalysts showed superior catalytic activity compared to the Co due to the synergistic interaction and CoMo alloy formation. The Mo, Co, and mixed metal oxide were observed in calcined CoMo catalysts. For 4.1 mmol metals per g of alumina, Mo and Co oxides were increased with increasing Mo and Co content, respectively. However, CoMoO 4 was increased by increasing Mo loading up to 2.4 mmol. Conversely, the reduced CoMo catalysts were gradually enriched with CoMo alloy with increasing Co content up to 2.4 mmol and slightly declined at 3.1 mmol Co. The reaction follows the HDO mechanism over CoMo alloy and Co oxide resulting in C 18 hydrocarbon formation. The CoMo catalysts displayed enhanced catalytic performance at elevated temperatures and metal loadings, with insignificant effect on the alkane selectivity. The experimental results were also correlated by a suitable kinetic model.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty triglycerides into diesel range hydrocarbons over non-noble-metal catalysts is highly desirable for effectively solving the problems of energy depletion and carbon emission. In this study, the most efficient catalytic system (Co 3 Mo 3 N) achieves almost complete conversion of methyl palmitate (MPA, a typical ester exchange product of palmitic acid triglyceride and methanol) (99.5%) with 95.0% selectivity to hexadecane under mild conditions, which is attributed to the synergistic interactions between Co and Mo nitrides, forming a unique dual-site configuration of the Co 3 Mo 3 N catalyst. The reaction kinetics analysis shows that HDO instead of decarboxylation/decarbonylation is the primary reaction route for the hydrogenation of MPA over the Co 3 Mo 3 N catalyst. Significantly, Co 3 Mo 3 N exhibits good stability for 72 h. These results suggest that the highly efficient cobalt-molybdenum bimetallic catalyst with an optimized fine structure and electronic coordination environment could achieve the production of clean fuels from the HDO of fatty acids/esters.

Abstract:Metal oxide modified nickel catalysts are highly desirable for the conversion of biomass-derived compounds to biofuels and valuable chemicals because of their low-cost and unique synergistic effects in catalytic reaction. Herein, a series of metal oxide modified nickel catalysts were scrutinized in the hydrodeoxygenation of steatic acid to diesel-range alkanes without any carbon loss as a model reaction. The results showed that MoOx modified Ni/SiO2 catalyst was the most active and selective for the hydrodeoxygenation of stearic acid under mild reaction conditions (260 °C and 3.0 MPa H2 partial pressure). The catalyst with an Ni/Mo molar ratio of 1, and that was reduced at an optimized temperature (500 °C), exhibited the best performance; this catalyst achieved a high selectivity (>95%) to diesel-range alkanes at 100% stearic acid conversion. A high selectivity (>60%) to C18 alkane and a less than 30% selectivity to C17 alkane were observed at 260 °C and 3.0 MPa H2 partial pressure. By selecting an appropriate support, the selectivity to C18 alkane can reach 95% at 100% stearic acid conversion over Ni–Mo/H-ZSM-5 catalysts. In contrast to Ni/SiO2, Ni–Mo/SiO2 was more efficient for CO hydrogenation and less active for C–C bond cleavage, which afforded a higher selectivity to long-chain hydrocarbons without any carbon loss. Detailed characterization, control experiments, and kinetic studies indicate that the high activity and selectivity to the C18 alkane arises from a synergy between Ni and MoOx. The Ni sites at the interface between the Ni metal and MoOx species play a role in the generation of hydride (Hδ−) species from H2 dissociation, and MoOx plays a role in promotion of fatty acids adsorption through adsorbing carboxylic groups at the oxygen vacancy of MoOx. The deep understanding of such synergic catalysis will provide significant clues for the rational design of bimetallic catalysts towards the production of diesel-range alkanes without any carbon loss from the hydrodeoxygenation of fatty acids/esters.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of vegetable oils to renewable alkane-type biofuels has attracted more and more concern in recent years. However, the presently used catalysts were mainly focused on the sulfided CoMo and NiMo catalysts, which inevitably posed sulfur contamination in final products. Therefore, exploring nonsulfured catalyst for this processing is of fundamental importance, but it is still an open challenge. In this paper, we prepared the sulfur free Ni supported on SiO2, γ-Al2O3, SAPO-11, HZSM-5, and HY by incipient wetness impregnation and tested the catalytic performance in HDO of methyl palmitate. Alkanes with long carbon chains were mainly produced with two possibly parallel approaches: hydrogenation of hexadecanal to hexadecanol, followed by dehydration/hydrogenation to C16 alkane and decarbonylaton/decarboxylation of hexadecanoic acid to C15 alkane. The acidity of catalysts significantly influenced their catalytic performance, and the Ni/SAPO-11 catalysts with weak and medium acidity showed superior properties to the other catalysts due to the synergistic effect of metal Ni and acidic support. The maximum yield of 93% for C15+ alkanes was observed over 7 wt % Ni/SAPO-11 under the mild reaction conditions of 493 K and 2 MPa, indicating its promising application in this reaction.

Abstract:To develop an efficient and feasible catalyst for converting inedible vegetable oil to green biodiesel via a one-step decarboxylation process, a series of Ni-based MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts with different active Ni species were fabricated by adjusting the various Ni loading amounts (2.5–20%) and applied to the catalytic deoxygenation of OA to generate green biodiesel. Additionally, the structure-property relationship, deactivation mechanism and regeneration performance were also evaluated via various characterization technologies (XRD, BET, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, XPS, SEM-EDX, HRTEM, TGA, Raman as well as GC/MS and UV-fluorescence spectra). The experimental results indicated that Ni introduction obviously enhanced the conversion ratio. Ni (10%)/MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance with the highest HCs (95.12%), olefin content (57.37%) and green biodiesel content (75.90%) due to mild Brønsted-rich acidity sites, lower reduction temperature, higher active metallic Ni species content, suitable oxygen vacancy content and favorable texture properties via the decarbonylation reaction pathway. Furthermore, lower Ni loading was beneficial to gasoline and bioaviation fuel generation due to higher Brønsted-rich acidity sites and total acid amount, which boosted C-C scission by cracking reaction, and higher Ni content facilitated biodiesel formation. Additionally, Ni (10%)/MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts showed excellent reusability and regeneration due to Ni active species, but these advantages were slightly decreased (HCs: from 95.12% to 61.63%; biodiesel: from 75.90% to 57.52%) due to coke deposition and metal active species leaching and oxidation.

Abstract:A series of bifunctional catalysts, MoS2/Al2O3 (70 wt.%), zeolite (30 wt.%) (zeolite—ZSM-5, ZSM-12, and ZSM-22), and silica aluminophosphate SAPO-11, were synthesized for hydroconversion of methyl palmitate (10 wt.% in dodecane) in a trickle-bed reactor. Mo loading was about 7 wt.%. Catalysts and supports were characterized by different physical-chemical methods (HRTEM-EDX, SEM-EDX, XRD, N2 physisorption, and FTIR spectroscopy). Hydroprocessing was performed at a temperature of 250–350 °C, hydrogen pressure of 3.0–5.0 MPa, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) of 36 h−1, and an H2/feed ratio of 600 Nm3/m3. Complete conversion of oxygen-containing compounds was achieved at 310 °C in the presence of MoS2/Al2O3-zeolite catalysts; the selectivity for the conversion of methyl palmitate via the 'direct' hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) route was over 85%. The yield of iso-alkanes gradually increases in order: MoS2/Al2O3 < MoS2/Al2O3-ZSM-12 < MoS2/Al2O3-ZSM-5 < MoS2/Al2O3-SAPO-11 < MoS2/Al2O3-ZSM-22. The sample MoS2/Al2O3-ZSM-22 demonstrated the highest yield of iso-alkanes (40%). The hydroisomerization activity of the catalysts was in good correlation with the concentration of Brønsted acid sites in the synthesized supports.

Abstract:Highly efficient catalysts play an important role in the effective use of biomass oil to produce clean fuel. In this work, pure‐phase Ni‐Mo bimetallic nitrides (Ni2Mo3N and Ni3Mo3N) with different stoichiometric ratios are prepared by temperature‐programmed nitridation of the metal oxides precursors in ammonia, which are investigated in the hydrodeoxygenation of methyl palmitate in the fixed‐bed reactor at moderate conditions. The physical and chemical properties of catalysts were evaluated by H2‐TPR, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and CO chemisorption. The Ni2Mo3N catalyst presents the best methyl palmitate hydrogenation activity (con.% = 95.4%) and the maximum hexadecane selectivity (95.0%), which is obviously higher than those of Ni3Mo3N and Mo2N catalysts. By introducing transition metal Ni into the Mo2N lattice to form nickel‐molybdenum bimetallic nitride, the lattice structure and electronic structure of the Mo active center have been changed, which greatly enhances the hydrodeoxygenation performances for the transformation of biomass oil to clean fuel.

The effect of hydroxyl and metal synergetic structures on the FCC diesel hydrotreating performance of NiMo/Al 2 O 3 catalysts

Abstract:Two NiMo/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared using impregnation solutions with different acid-base properties. And the effects of the surface structural differences on FCC diesel hydrotreating and desulfurization performance were investigated. XRD, Raman, H 2 -TPR, TEM, XPS characterization showed that NiMoO 4 and polymolybdates, the mainly metal phase on the surface of NiMo/Al 2 O 3 -A, would tend to form a three bridging hydroxyl structure with the γ-Al 2 O 3 support. The abundant NiMo alloy structures weakened the interaction between metal and oxygen atoms. While the NiMo/Al 2 O 3 -B with more developed specific surface area, pore volume and acid content tended to form double bridging hydroxyl structures, which had more active interactions with metals. The higher sulfidation degree of NiMo/Al 2 O 3 -B could be observed, exhibiting more NiMoS structures and stronger metal synergetic effects. The performance evaluation results showed that NiMo/Al 2 O 3 -A had better desulfurization and denitrification performance, and the content of S and N in the diesel decreased to 211 μg/g and 96.3 μg/g, respectively, which was attributed to the more active phases brought about by the good MoS 2 dispersion. On the other hand, NiMo/Al 2 O 3 -B exhibited better hydrotreating performance, with the content of alkanes and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the product increasing from 20.5% and 24.2% to 33.6% and 48.7%, respectively. The higher content of alkanes and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons provided a wider range of application for FCC diesel after upgrading.

Abstract:Two sets of silica-supported nickel phosphide catalysts with a nickel content of about 2.5 and 10 wt % and Ni/P molar ratio 2/1, 1/1 and 1/2 in each set, were prepared by way of a temperature-programmed reduction method using (Ni(CH3COO)2) and ((NH4)2HPO4) as a precursor. The NixPy/SiO2 catalysts were characterized using chemical analysis N2 physisorption, XRD, TEM, 31P MAS NMR. Methyl palmitate hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was performed in a trickle-bed reactor at 3 MPa and 290 °C with LHSV ranging from 0.3 to 16 h−1. The Ni/P ratio was found to affect the nickel phosphide phase composition, POx groups content and catalytic properties in methyl palmitate HDO with the TOF increased along with a decline of Ni/P ratio and a growth of POx groups’ content. Taking into account the possible routes of methyl palmitate conversion (metal-catalyzed hydrogenolysis or acid-catalyzed hydrolysis), we proposed that the enhancement of acid POx groups’ content with the Ni/P ratio decrease provides an enhancement of the rate of methyl palmitate conversion through the acceleration of acid-catalyzed hydrolysis.

Abstract:In the context of the preparation of liquid fuels derived from biomass with zero CO2 footprint, fatty acids appear as suitable feedstocks. However, reduction of carboxylic acid groups usually requires harsh reaction conditions and the development of efficient solid catalysts. Herein, bimetallic Ni–Mo nitrides have been obtained by a procedure not involving nitridation of the corresponding oxide, but reductive decomposition of the tris(ethylenediamine)nickel molybdate at temperatures between 550 and 700 °C. Successful formation of the Ni3Mo3N nitride is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Ni3Mo3N samples are found to be efficient catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid to C15/C16 alkanes with a combined selectivity over 90 and 100% palmitic acid conversion and higher activity than analogous Ni–Mo nitrides obtained by NH3 nitridation of NiMoO4. Ni3Mo3N is found recyclable with only a slight decay in the catalytic activity upon consecutive reuses attributable to the neutralization of acid sites. Highly stable Mo-based bimetallic catalysts for selective deoxygenation of oleic acid to fuel-like hydrocarbons

Abstract:To develop efficient, economical and environmentally friendly Mo-based bimetallic Al/MCM-41 catalysts for catalytic oleic acid pyrolysis into hydrocarbon-like upgrading biofuel, a series of metal-modified Mo-based catalysts was successfully synthesized. The effects of different metal oxide types (Zr, Zn, Pt, Cu, Co, Ce, Ni) and Ce to Mo mixed ratios were compared and characterized by XRD, BET, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, SEM and TEM technologies. Simultaneously, the deoxygenation effect and reusability properties were also evaluated by Py-GC/MS and TGA. The results showed that the molybdenum-based bimetallic catalyst exhibited superior deoxygenation activity (Ce>Cu>Zn>Ni>Zr~Pt>Co) in the decarbonylation and decarboxylation pathways. Higher deoxygenation activity was related to rich surface Ce-□-Mo synergistic oxygen vacancies, suitable metal-Lewis and Brønsted acidity and excellent textural properties. A higher Ce content was beneficial to HC and aromatic formation due to a higher specific surface area and mesoporous volume, and a higher Mo content facilitated olefin and alkane conversion due to a higher Brønsted acid intensity and smaller pore size. The 3Ce-1Mo/Al-MCM-41 exhibited excellent catalytic activity and promising reusability by yielding 97.72% hydrocarbons, 75.33% aromatic content and 57.92% MAHs due to the synergistic effect between Ce and MoOx, rich surface Ce-□-Mo synergistic oxygen vacancies and suitable metal-Lewis and Brønsted acid intensities that contributed to better reaction activity and coke resistance and activated the C=O of oleic acid. The slight reduction in HCs was mainly due to the loss of active metal sites and coke deposition. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of Ce and MoOx species obviously advanced the reaction activity and coke resistance.

Abstract:The liquid-phase deoxygenation reaction of palmitic acid has been investigated in a batch reactor over carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-supported MoO2 and Pd catalysts under hydrogen atmosphere. The results showed that palmitic acid can be converted completely at 220°C on MoO2/CNTs catalyst with high hexadecane selectivity (92.2%). The H2 pressure of the reaction can control the product׳s selectivity. Compared with noble metal Pd-based catalyst, MoO2-based catalyst is a much better catalyst because of its high activity, selectivity, stability and low cost. Product distribution revealed that Pd offered high selectivity for pentadecane, whereas MoO2 showed excellent selectivity for hexadecane, which showed more favorable atom efficiency. Therefore, the MoO2/CNTs catalyst can be regarded as an attractive candidate for catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of long-chain fatty acids to produce high-grade transportation biofuels.

Abstract:An alternative to non-renewable fuels is the production of green diesel from deoxygenation of vegetable oils. In this study, the effect of the supports on nickel phosphide catalysts for deoxygenation of oleic acid to produce hydrocarbons was investigated. Nickel phosphide catalysts supported on USY, H-ZSM-5 and Al-SBA-15 were synthetized by temperature programmed reduction (TPR) of metal phosphate precursors and the prepared catalysts were characterized by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), temperature programmed reduction of hydrogen (TPR), nitrogen physisorption, temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (TPD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The catalytic tests were performed in an autoclave batch reactor at 260 °C, 280 °C and 300 °C and 50 bar of hydrogen. The production of hydrocarbons (C10-C18) at 300 °C followed the order: Ni2P/Al-SBA-15 > Ni2P/H-ZSM-5 > Ni2P/USY. The Ni2P/Al-SBA-15 exhibited a remarkable deoxygenation activity, compared to noble metals. All the catalysts achieved more C17 than C18 hydrocarbons, therefore, decarbonylation/decarboxylation reactions prevail. With regard the temperature effect, the amount of hydrocarbons increased from 260 °C to 280 °C but it decreased from 280 °C to 300 °C for all catalysts, which can be ascribed to catalyst deactivation.

Abstract:Background: Catalytic deoxygenation is a prominent process for production of renewable fuels from vegetable oil. In this work, deoxygenation of technical grade methyl oleate to diesel fuel aliphatic hydrocarbons (C15 - C18) is evaluated with several parameters including temperature, hydrogen pressure and reaction time in a stirred batch reactor over Pd/SBA-15 catalysts. Results: Two different SBA-15 morphologies i.e. spherelike and necklacelike structures have been synthesize as supports for Pd active metal. It is found that Pd dispersion on necklacelike SBA-15 is higher than that of spherelike SBA-15. Notably, higher Pd dispersion on necklacelike SBA-15 provides significant deoxygenation efficiency as compared to Pd/SBA-15-spherelike. Results show that H2 pressures greatly determine the total ester conversion and selectivity to C15 - C18 aliphatic hydrocarbons. Total ester conversions with 55< selectivity to n-heptadecane are achieved using Pd/SBA-15-necklacelike at 270°C and 60 bar H2 pressure within 6 h reaction time. Gas phase study reveals that formation of C17 is generated via indirect decarbonylation when the reaction time is prolonged. Conclusions: Pd/SBA-15-necklacelike catalyst exhibits good catalytic performance with high selectivity to diesellike aliphatic hydrocarbons (C15 - C18). The physicochemical properties of the Pd supported on different SBA-15 morphologies influence the deoxygenation activity of the catalysts. Furthermore, the reaction pathways are governed by the H2 pressure as well as reaction duration.
Preparation of Hydrodesulfurization Catalysts Using MoS3 Nanoparticles As a Precursor

Abstract:gamma-Alumina-supported MoS3 nanoparticles (NPs) denoted as MoS3/Al2O3 were firstly synthesized by chemical deposition method, and then used as the "second support" for promoter Ni atoms to prepare a pre-sulfided bimetallic HDS catalyst denoted as CAT-MoS3 by the conventional impregnation method. Meanwhile, for comparison purpose, two bimetallic catalysts denoted as CAT-MoS2 and CAT-MoO3 with the same metal loadings were prepared using MoS2/Al2O3 and MoO3/Al2O3 as the starting material, respectively. Characterization and activity assessment show that, using MoS3 as the precursor not only promotes the resulting bimetallic catalyst with a much higher sulfidation degree of Mo species, but also realizes a better decoration of Ni atoms onto the edges of MoS2 nanoslabs. The dual effect guarantees the plentiful formation of Type II Ni-Mo-S active sites and thus remarkably enhances the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activity. Compared with CAT-MoS2, CAT-MoS3 possesses very similar physical properties, microstructure and sulfidation degree of Mo species, however, due to its much higher decoration degree of Ni atoms, it holds a significantly enhanced HDS activity. Moreover, in comparison with CAT-MoS2, CAT-MoO3 exhibits a worse microstructure (more MoS2 nanoslabs with larger length and lower stacking) and a much lower sulfidation degree of Mo species, but it still holds much higher HDS activity, further implying that the decoration degree (i.e. promoting effect) imposes the most important impact on the HDS activity. It is rational and effective to modify the starting state of Mo species to enhance the promoting effect and thereof improve the catalytic performance.
Catalytic Hydrotreating of Crude Pongamia pinnata Oil to Bio-Hydrogenated Diesel over Sulfided NiMo Catalyst

Abstract:This work studied the catalytic activity and stability of Ni-MoS2 supported on γ-Al2O3, SiO2, and TiO2 toward deoxygenation of different feedstocks, i.e., crude Pongamia pinnata oil (PPO) and refined palm olein (RPO). PPO was used as a renewable feedstock for bio-hydrogenated diesel production via catalytic hydrotreating under a temperature of 330 °C, H2 pressure of 50 bar, WHSV of 1.5 h−1, and H2/oil (v/v) of 1000 cm3/cm3 under continuous operation. The oil yield from a Soxhlet extraction of PPO was up to 26 wt.% on a dry basis, mainly consisting of C18 fatty acids. The catalytic activity in terms of conversion and diesel yield was in the same trend as increasing in the order of NiMo/γ-Al2O3 > NiMo/TiO2 > NiMo/SiO2. The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activity was more favorable over the sulfided NiMo supported on γ-Al2O3 and TiO2, while a high DCO was observed over the sulfided NiMo/SiO2 catalyst, which related to the properties of the support material and the intensity of metal–support interaction. The deactivation of NiMo/SiO2 and NiMo/TiO2 occurred in a short period, due to the phosphorus and alkali impurities in PPO which were not found in the case of RPO. NiMo/γ-Al2O3 exhibited the high resistance of impure feedstock with excellent stability. This indicates that the catalytic performance is influenced by the purity of the feedstock as well as the characteristics of the catalysts.
