Abstract:Objective: To test the effect on psychopathology and quality of life of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Dietary Counseling (DC), and Combined Treatment (CT) in treatment-seeking patients with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and obesity. Methods: Utilizing an observational study design, 189 obese adult patients with BED were treated by manualized therapy protocols. An independent assessment of health-related quality of life (Obesity-Related Well-Being questionnaire - ORWELL-97), attitudes toward eating (Eating Inventory - EI), binge eating (Binge Eating Scale - BES) and body uneasiness (Body Uneasiness Test - BUT) was performed at baseline, end-of-treatment, and six-month follow-up. These data are the secondary outcomes of a previously published treatment study. Results: A higher dropout rate was observed in the DC compared to the EFT and CT groups, while body weight decreased significantly in all three groups. Pre-post scores on the BES, BUT Global Severity Index, and EI Hunger subscale significantly decreased in the CT and EFT groups (but not the DC group). At six-month follow-up, 71% of participants in CT and 46% of participants in EFT had a BES score below the threshold of attention for BED (≤16), whereas no participants in the DC group reached this target. Finally the ORWELL-97 score decreased significantly in all groups, but significantly more so in the CT and EFT groups. Conclusion: Results support the utility of combining EFT and DC in the treatment of patients with BED and obesity, emphasizing the usefulness of techniques focused on cognitive emotional processing for changing eating disorder psychopathology and quality of life.

Abstract:Background: Sufferers from bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) underestimate the severity risk of their illness and, therefore, postpone seeking professional help for years. Moreover, less than one in five actually seek professional help and only 50% respond to current treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The impetus for the present trial is to explore a novel combination treatment approach adapted from physical exercise- and dietary therapy (PED-t). The therapeutic underpinnings of these separate treatment components are well-known, but their combination to treat BN and BED have never been previously tested. The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for this new treatment approach and to outline the specific methods and procedures. Methods: The PED-t trial uses a prospective randomized controlled design. It allocates women between 18 and 40 years (BMI range 17.5-35.0) to groups consisting of 5-8 members who receive either CBT or PED-t for 16 weeks. Excess participants are allocated to a waiting list control group condition. All participants are assessed at baseline, post-treatment, 6, 12 and 24 months' post-follow-up, respectively, and monitored for changes in biological, psychological and therapy process variables. The primary outcome relates to the ED symptom severity, while secondary outcomes relates to treatment effects on physical health, treatment satisfaction, therapeutic alliance, and cost-effectiveness. We aim to disseminate the results in high-impact journals, preferable open access, and at international conferences. Discussion: We expect that the new treatment will perform equal to CBT in terms of behavioral and psychological symptoms, but better in terms of reducing somatic symptoms and complications. We also expect that the new treatment will improve physical fitness and thereby, quality of life. Hence, the new treatment will add to the portfolio of evidence-based therapies and thereby provide a good treatment alternative for females with BN and BED. Effects of Mindful Eating in Patients with Obesity and Binge Eating Disorder

Abstract:Introduction: Binge eating disorder (BED) is a psychiatric illness related to a high frequency of episodes of binge eating, loss of control, body image dissatisfaction, and suffering caused by overeating. It is estimated that 30% of patients with BED are affected by obesity. "Mindful eating" (ME) is a promising new eating technique that can improve self-control and good food choices, helping to increase awareness about the triggers of binge eating episodes and intuitive eating training. Objectives: To analyze the impact of ME on episodes of binge eating, body image dissatisfaction, quality of life, eating habits, and anthropometric data [weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), and waist circumference] in patients with obesity and BED. Method: This quantitative, prospective, longitudinal, and experimental study recruited 82 patients diagnosed with obesity and BED. The intervention was divided into eight individual weekly meetings, guided by ME sessions, nutritional educational dynamics, cooking workshops, food sensory analyses, and applications of questionnaires [Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ); Binge Eating Scale (BES); Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF)]. There was no dietary prescription for calories, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber. Patients were only encouraged to consume fewer ultra-processed foods and more natural and minimally processed foods. The meetings occurred from October to November 2023. Statistical analysis: To carry out inferential statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test was used to verify the normality of variable distribution. All variables were identified as non-normal distribution and were compared between the first and the eighth week using a two-tailed Wilcoxon test. Non-Gaussian data were represented by median ± interquartile range (IQR). Additionally, α < 0.05 and p < 0.05 were adopted. Results: Significant reductions were found from the first to the eighth week for weight, BMI, waist circumference, episodes of binge eating, BSQ scale score, BES score, and total energy value (all p < 0.0001). In contrast, there was a significant increase in the WHOQOL-BREF score and daily water intake (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: ME improved anthropometric data, episodes of binge eating, body image dissatisfaction, eating habits, and quality of life in participants with obesity and BED in the short-term. However, an extension of the project will be necessary to analyze the impact of the intervention in the long-term.

Abstract:Abstract Background Research into psychotherapy for binge-eating disorder (BED) has focused mainly on cognitive behavioural therapies, but efficacy, failure to abstain, and dropout rates continue to be problematic. The experience of negative emotions is among the most accurate predictors for the occurrence of binge eating episodes in BED, suggesting benefits to exploring psychological treatments with a more specific focus on the role of emotion. The present study aimed to explore the feasibility of individual emotion-focused therapy (EFT) as a treatment for BED by examining the outcomes of a pilot randomised wait-list controlled trial. Methods Twenty-one participants were assessed using a variety of feasibility measures relating to recruitment, credibility and expectancy, therapy retention, objective binge episodes and days, and binge eating psychopathology outcomes. The treatment consisted of 12 weekly one-hour sessions of EFT for maladaptive emotions over 3 months. A mixed model approach was utilised with one between effect (group) using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test the hypothesis that participants immediately receiving the EFT treatment would demonstrate a greater degree of improvement on outcomes relating to objective binge episodes and days, and binge eating psychopathology, compared to participants on the EFT wait-list; and one within effect (time) using a repeated-measures ANOVA to test the hypothesis that participation in the EFT intervention would result in significant improvements in outcome measures from pre to post-therapy and then maintained at follow-up. Results Recruitment, credibility and expectancy, therapy retention outcomes indicated EFT is a feasible treatment for BED. Further, participants receiving EFT demonstrated a greater degree of improvement in objective binge episodes and days, and binge eating psychopathology compared to EFT wait-list control group participants. When participants in the EFT wait-list control group then received treatment and outcomes data were combined with participants who initially received the treatment, EFT demonstrated significant improvement in objective binge episodes and days, and binge eating psychopathology for the entire sample. Conclusions These findings provide further preliminary evidence for the feasibility of individual EFT for BED and support more extensive randomised control trials to assess efficacy. Trial registration The study was retrospectively registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ( ACTRN12620000563965 ) on 14 May 2020.

Abstract:Binge-eating disorder (BED) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating a large amount of food in a discrete period of time while experiencing a loss of control. Cognitive behavioral therapy-enhanced (CBT-E) is a recommended treatment for binge-eating disorder and is typically offered through 20 sessions. Although binge-eating disorder is highly responsive to CBT-E, the cost of treating these patients is high. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the efficacy of low-intensity and low-cost treatments for binge-eating disorder that can be offered as a first line of treatment and be widely disseminated. The proposed noninferiority randomized controlled trial aims to determine the efficacy of web-based guided self-help CBT-E compared to treatment-as-usual CBT-E. Guided self-help will be based on a self-help program to stop binge eating, will be shorter in duration and lower intensity, and will require fewer therapist hours. Patients with binge-eating disorder (N = 180) will be randomly assigned to receive guided self-help or treatment-as-usual. Assessments will take place at baseline, mid-treatment, at the end of treatment, and at 20- and 40-weeks post-treatment. Treatment efficacy will be measured by examining the reduction in binge-eating days in the previous 28 days between baseline and the end of treatment between groups, with a noninferiority margin (Δ) of 1 binge-eating day. Secondary outcomes will include full remission, body shape dissatisfaction, therapeutic alliance, clinical impairment, health-related quality of life, attrition, and an economic evaluation to assess cost-effectiveness and cost-utility. The moderators examined will be baseline scores, demographic variables, and body mass index. It is expected that guided self-help is noninferior in efficacy compared to treatment-as-usual. The proposed study will be the first to directly compare the efficacy and economically evaluate a low-intensity and low-cost binge-eating disorder treatment compared to treatment-as-usual. If guided self-help is noninferior to treatment-as-usual in efficacy, it can be widely disseminated and used as a first line of treatment for patients with binge-eating disorder. The Dutch trial register number is R21.016. The study has been approved by the Medical Research Ethics Committees United on May 25th, 2021, case number NL76368.100.21.

Exploring Dietary Restraint as a Mediator of Behavioral and Cognitive‐Behavioral Treatments on Outcomes for Patients With Binge‐Eating Disorder With Obesity

Abstract:Objective To explore dietary‐restraint as a mediator of binge eating and weight‐loss outcomes within a randomized controlled trial comparing cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT) and behavioral weight loss (BWL) for binge‐eating disorder (BED) with obesity. Methods Ninety participants were randomly assigned to CBT or BWL and assessed by evaluators blinded to conditions at pretreatment, throughout‐, and post‐treatment (6 months). Three dietary‐restraint measures (Eating Disorder Examination‐Questionnaire [EDE‐Q]‐Restraint, Three‐Factor Flexible‐Restraint and Rigid‐Restraint) were administered at pretreatment and after 2 months of treatment. Regression models examined whether changes at 2‐months in the restraint scales mediated the effects of treatment (CBT versus BWL) on binge eating and weight‐loss outcomes at post‐treatment. Results CBT and BWL had similar binge‐eating outcomes and similar changes in EDE‐Q‐restraint and flexible‐restraint. BWL had greater 2‐month increases in rigid‐restraint and greater weight‐loss at posttreatment than CBT, with results suggesting 2‐month changes in rigid‐restraint mediated the greater difference (>7 pounds) in weight‐loss. The observed mediation effect of 2.92 suggests 39% of total treatment‐effect on weight‐loss was mediated through 2‐month increases in rigid‐restraint. Discussion This secondary analysis within a trial comparing CBT and BWL for BED suggests early‐change in rigid‐restraint has a mediating effect of BWL on weight‐loss. Findings indicate that BWL improves binge eating and challenge views that dietary‐restraint might exacerbate binge eating in BED with obesity. Findings require confirmation using hypothesis‐testing in future trials. Trial Registration: Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT00537758 ("Treatment for Obesity and Binge Eating Disorder")

Abstract:The incidence of multiple renal arteries was studied by reviewing the translumbar aortograms of 400 patients, 381 of whom had hypertension. Excluding those few with inadequate aortograms, there were 249 hypertensive patients who had normal renal arteries, and 110 who had occlusive disease or aneurysms of the renal artery. Seventy-five% of the patients with renal artery lesions and 75% of patients with normal renal arteries had 1 renal artery to each kidney. The incidence of multiple renal arteries in these hypertensive patients was 25%, no higher than has been recorded generally in anatomic investigations. Eighty-three (31%) of 269 hypertensive patients with a single renal artery on each side and 27 (31%) of 88 hypertensive patients with multiple renal arteries had occlusive lesions or aneurysms.

Abstract:Importance: Depression and eating disorders are heightened for adolescents with obesity. Clinical reviews alongside self-report questionnaires are important to ensure appropriate intervention. Objective: To evaluate changes in self-report symptoms of depression, eating disorders, and binge eating in adolescents with obesity during the Fast Track to Health trial. Design, setting, and participants: This was a randomized clinical trial conducted from 2018 to 2023. It was a multisite trial conducted at children's hospitals in Sydney, New South Wales, and Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and included adolescents (13-17 years) with obesity (defined as adult equivalent body mass index ≥30; calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) and 1 or more related complications. Interventions: Duration was 52 weeks including a very low energy diet for 4 weeks followed by intermittent energy restriction (IER) or continuous energy restriction (CER). Main outcomes and measures: Self-report symptoms of depression (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised 10-Item Version for Adolescents [CESDR-10]; scores 0-30), eating disorders (Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire [EDE-Q]; scores 0-6), and binge eating (Binge Eating Scale [BES]; scores 0-46) were assessed. Adolescents were screened for depression and eating disorders (weeks 0, 4, 16, and 52) and monitored for the onset of new symptoms of disordered eating during dietetic consults. Results: Of 141 adolescents (median [IQR] age, 14.8 [12.9-17.9] years; 71 male [50.4%]) enrolled, median baseline EDE-Q score was 2.28 (IQR, 1.43-3.14), median baseline CESDR-10 score was 9.00 (IQR, 4.00-14.50), and median baseline BES score was 11.00 (IQR, 5.00-17.00). There were no differences between groups for change in CESDR-10 (mean difference at week 52, 0.75; 95% CI, -1.86 to 3.37), EDE-Q (mean difference at week 52, 0.02; 95% CI, -0.41 to 0.45), or BES (mean difference at week 52, -2.91; 95% CI, -5.87 to 0.05). The within-group reductions at week 4 were maintained at week 52, for CESDR-10 and EDE-Q, indicating reduced symptoms of depression and eating disorders. Within-group reductions on the BES were maintained in the IER group only. Seventeen adolescents (12.1%) required support or referral for depression and/or disordered eating, including 7 (5%; 5 IER, 2 CER) adolescents who experienced the onset or reemergence of symptoms during the intervention. Conclusions and relevance: Results suggest that many treatment-seeking adolescents with obesity self-reported symptoms of depression and eating disorders. Although symptoms reduced for most, some required additional support. Obesity treatment is an opportune time to screen and monitor for depression and disordered eating. Abstract:The cornerstone of obesity treatment is behavioural weight management, resulting in significant improvements in cardio-metabolic and psychosocial health. However, there is ongoing concern that dietary interventions used for weight management may precipitate the development of eating disorders. Systematic reviews demonstrate that, while for most participants medically supervised obesity treatment improves risk scores related to eating disorders, a subset of people who undergo obesity treatment may have poor outcomes for eating disorders. This review summarises the background and rationale for the formation of the Eating Disorders In weight-related Therapy (EDIT) Collaboration. The EDIT Collaboration will explore the complex risk factor interactions that precede changes to eating disorder risk following weight management. In this review, we also outline the programme of work and design of studies for the EDIT Collaboration, including expected knowledge gains. The EDIT studies explore risk factors and the interactions between them using individual-level data from international weight management trials. Combining all available data on eating disorder risk from weight management trials will allow sufficient sample size to interrogate our hypothesis: that individuals undertaking weight management interventions will vary in their eating disorder risk profile, on the basis of personal characteristics and intervention strategies available to them. The collaboration includes the integration of health consumers in project development and translation. An important knowledge gain from this project is a comprehensive understanding of the impact of weight management interventions on eating disorder risk.
Naltrexone-Bupropion and Behavior Therapy, Alone and Combined, for Binge-Eating Disorder: Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Binge-eating disorder, the most prevalent eating disorder, is a serious public health problem associated with obesity, psychiatric and medical comorbidities, and functional impairments. Binge-eating disorder remains underrecognized and infrequently treated, and few evidence-based treatments exist. The authors tested the effectiveness of naltrexone-bupropion and behavioral weight loss therapy (BWL), alone and combined, for binge-eating disorder comorbid with obesity. METHODS In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial conducted from February 2017 to February 2021, using a 2×2 balanced factorial design, 136 patients with binge-eating disorder (81.6% women; mean age, 46.5 years; mean BMI, 37.1) were randomized to one of four 16-week treatments: placebo (N=34), naltrexone-bupropion (N=32), BWL+placebo (N=35), or BWL+naltrexone-bupropion (N=35). Overall, 81.7% of participants completed independent posttreatment assessments. RESULTS Intention-to-treat binge-eating remission rates were 17.7% in the placebo group, 31.3% in the naltrexone-bupropion group, 37.1% in the BWL+placebo group, and 57.1% in the BWL+naltrexone-bupropion group. Logistic regression of binge-eating remission revealed that BWL was significantly superior to no BWL, and that naltrexone-bupropion was significantly superior to placebo, but there was no significant interaction between BWL and medication. Mixed models of complementary measures of binge-eating frequency also indicated that BWL was significantly superior to no BWL. The rates of participants attaining 5% weight loss were 11.8% in the placebo group, 18.8% in the naltrexone-bupropion group, 31.4% in the BWL+placebo group, and 38.2% in the BWL+naltrexone-bupropion group. Logistic regression of 5% weight loss and mixed models of percent weight loss both revealed that BWL was significantly superior to no BWL. Mixed models revealed significantly greater improvements for BWL than no BWL on secondary measures (eating disorder psychopathology, depression, eating behaviors, and cholesterol and HbA1c levels). CONCLUSIONS BWL and naltrexone-bupropion were associated with significant improvements in binge-eating disorder, with a consistent pattern of BWL being superior to no BWL.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Objectives</h3><p>Current evidence supporting the effectiveness of psychotherapy for the treatment of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) indicates that there is still a need to improve outcomes by investigating the application of new developments in psychotherapy for the treatment of BED. Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) has been successfully applied for the management of several psychological disorders. However, to date, there has been no published research in the area of MCT for BED.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Method</h3><p>The current study employed a case series design to explore the application of MCT for BED. Three participants engaged in 12 weeks of MCT treatment.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>All participants no longer met criteria for BED at the end of therapy and displayed significant improvement on the Emotional Overeating Questionnaire (EOQ) and Binge Eating Scale (BES) at both post‐treatment and at 2‐month follow‐up. Abstract:Psychological and pharmacological interventions for binge-eating disorder have previously demonstrated efficacy (compared with placebo or waitlist control); thus, we aimed to expand that literature with a review of comparative effectiveness. We searched MEDLINE,® EMBASE,® Cochrane Library, Academic OneFile, CINAHL® for binge-eating disorder treatment articles and selected studies using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were sufficient for network meta-analysis comparing two pharmacological interventions; psychological interventions were analysed qualitatively. In all, 28 treatment comparisons were included in this review: one pharmacological comparison (second-generation antidepressants versus lisdexamfetamine) and 26 psychological comparisons. Only three statistically significant differences emerged: lisdexamfetamine was better at increasing binge abstinence than second-generation antidepressants; therapist-led cognitive behavioural therapy was better at reducing binge-eating frequency than behavioural weight loss, but behavioural weight loss was better at reducing weight. The majority of other treatment comparisons revealed few significant differences between groups. Thus, patients and clinicians can choose from several effective treatment options. Abstract:Ten patients with clinical and laboratory features of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) underwent renal ultrasonography prior to biopsy because of proteinuria, azotemia, or uremia. Four patients had a history of intravenous heroin abuse and were considered separately so as to exclude it as a cause of nephropathy. Histological examination revealed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), which in patients with AIDS is characterized by rapid progression to severe uremia (though FSGS can also occur in several other forms of renal disease). The authors recommend that AIDS-associated FSGS be considered as a cause of type I parenchymal disease and suggest that serial sonograms may be useful in monitoring progressive renal involvement.

Abstract:Adolescent obesity requires effective and accessible intervention options and there is potential for intensive dietary interventions to be used as adjunctive therapy to behavioural weight management for some individuals (1) . The aim of this study was to determine the effect of two novel diet therapies, delivered in the as part of an intensive behavioural weight management intervention, in adolescents with metabolic complications associated with obesity. The Fast Track to Health study (HREC/17/SCHN/164; ACTRN12617001630303) was a multi-site 52-week RCT, conducted 2018 – 2023, comparing a very-low-energy diet (800kcal/day) followed by i) an intermittent energy restricted (IER) diet; and ii) a continuous energy restricted diet (CER), for adolescents (13-17years) with ≥1 obesity associated complication. Interventions were delivered as part of an intensive behavioural weight management intervention by a multidisciplinary team 2 . Anthropometry, body composition and cardiometabolic health were assessed at baseline and week-52. The primary outcome was change in BMI z-score at week-52. Dyslipidaemia was defined as HDL <1.03mmol/L and/or triglycerides ≥1.7mmol/l, and elevated liver function tests (LFTs) as ALT and/or GGT ≥1.5 upper limit of 30U/L 3 . The difference in BMI z-score between groups at week-52 (±4) was assessed using a t-test. Mixed models was used to investigate changes over time. Descriptive statistics were used to describe participants above and below clinical cut-points at baseline and week-52. In total, 141 adolescents (70 female) were enrolled and 97 (48 female) completed the intervention. At week-52, BMI z-score reduced by −0.23 [95%CI −0.37 to −0.22], BMI expressed as a percentage of 95 th percentile reduced by −8.86 [95%CI −12.46 to −7.47] and Fat Mass Index reduced by −1.49 [95%CI −2.36 to −1.08]. There was no significant difference for weight or cardiometabolic outcomes between diet groups. The occurrence of dyslipidaemia was unchanged between baseline and week-52 (n = 60 [43%] and n = 37 [43%] respectively) and a small improvement in the occurrence of impaired LFTs (n = 37 [27%] to n = 15 [17.2%] respectively). There were no differences in change of occurrence of dyslipidaemia or impaired LFTs between intervention groups. These findings suggest that both IER and CER, delivered as part of an intensive behavioural weight management program, are equally effective for improving weight and cardiometabolic outcomes for adolescents with obesity.

Abstract:Objective We aimed to compare use of, and outcomes from, programme‐led and focused interventions (guided self‐help and 10 session cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders [CBT‐T]) relative to other psychological therapies (including group and individual CBT for eating disorders [CBT‐ED]) in a national sample of emerging adults receiving early intervention for a non‐underweight binge/purge eating disorder. Method Data were drawn from 54 English eating disorder services using the First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) model. Participants (N = 1097) had a mean age of 18.95 years (SD 2.42) and diagnoses of bulimia nervosa (n = 506; 45%), binge eating disorder (n = 121; 11%), another specified feeding or eating disorder (n = 460; 42%), or an eating disorder, unspecified (n = 10, 1%). Linear mixed models were used to assess for effects of time and treatment on binge eating and purging, eating disorder psychopathology, depression/anxiety, and body mass index. Results 11% (n = 117) of patients received guided self‐help and 24% (n = 268) received CBT‐T. Baseline eating disorder psychopathology and depressive/anxiety symptoms did not differ significantly across the guided self‐help, CBT‐T, group CBT‐ED, and individual CBT‐ED conditions. All treatments were associated with significant reductions in symptoms over time. GSH and CBT‐T performed comparably to longer CBT‐ED. Discussion We provide additional evidence for the effectiveness of GSH and CBT‐T in the treatment of non‐underweight binge/purge eating disorders. Programme‐led and focused interventions may be under‐utilized and future research should explore when they are offered, and when not, both within and outside of early intervention settings.

Abstract:A simple, sensitive, and accurate stability-indicating analytical method has been developed and validated using ultra high performance liquid chromatography. The developed method is used to evaluate the related substances of eplerenone (EP). The degradation behavior of EP under stress conditions was determined, and the major degradants were identified by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The chromatographic conditions were optimized using an impurity-spiked solution, and the samples, generated from forced degradation studies. The resolution of EP, its potential impurities, and its degradation products was performed on a Waters UPLC BEH C18 column (50 × 2.1 mm, 1.7 μm) by linear gradient elution using a mobile phase consisting of 10 mmol/L ammonium acetate adjusted to pH 4.5, methanol and acetonitrile. A photo-diode array detector set at 245 nm was used for detection. The flow rate was set at 0.3 mL/min. The procedure had good specificity, linearity (0.02-3.14 μg/mL), recovery (96.1-103.9%), limit of detection (0.01-0.02 μg/mL), limit of quantitation (0.03-0.05 μg/mL), and robustness. The correction factors of the process-related substances were calculated.

Abstract:Objective For those with binge‐eating disorder (BED), access to evidence‐based, face‐to‐face treatment is often constrained by clinician availability and high treatment costs. Emerging evidence suggests online therapy (eTherapy) may navigate these barriers and reduce binge‐eating symptomatology; however, less evaluation has been done in those with BED, particularly with briefer programs targeting early change. This study investigated the feasibility and potential efficacy of a brief, supported eTherapy in those with BED or subthreshold BED. Method Participants were 19 women with BED who completed a four‐session eTherapy. This was a single‐arm, pre‐post intervention study, with participants completing weekly content and attending telehealth sessions. Key outcomes were assessed by the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire‐Short (EDE‐QS): objective binge episode days, loss of control over eating days, and eating disorder (ED) psychopathology via a total EDE‐QS score. Results Generalized and linear mixed models showed significantly reduced loss of control over eating days and ED psychopathology. Program feasibility was high, with strong program adherence and a below average attrition rate. Discussion Pilot results support the feasibility and potential efficacy of a brief, behavioral‐focused eTherapy program in reducing ED pathology in those with BED. Future research should further investigate findings in an adequately powered randomized controlled trial. Public significance This study suggests that a brief, behavioral‐focused online therapy, guided by non‐expert clinicians, can be successfully administered to those with binge‐eating disorder (BED) and may be efficacious at reducing eating disorder and other related symptomatology. Brief eTherapies that are effective, accessible, and rapidly available may facilitate earlier intervention in illness and improve treatment outcomes for individuals who experience this common and distressing disorder.

THE INFLUENCE OF VITAMIN C DEFICIENCY UPON THE RESISTANCE OF GUINEA PIGS TO DIPHTHERIA TOXIN GLUCOSE TOLERANCE 1

Abstract:It has been shown in a number of laboratories that a deficiency of vitamin C is accompanied by a decreased resistance against infections and the injuries resulting from bacterial toxins, as cited in recent reviews (1, 2). It is particularly significant that the lowered resistance can be shown in the zone of depletion before there are signs of scurvy and before there is a marked cessation of growth in young animals. For example, guinea pigs on a severely restricted vitamin C intake (non-scorbutic) and injected with sublethal doses of diphtheria toxin show more extensive tissue damage, greater loss in weight, shorter duration of life (3), larger areas of necrosis, and poorer tooth development (4) than similarly injected animals receiving a more liberal vitamin C intake. The mechanism of detoxification in vivo is probably due to the better nutritional level of the animals, rather than to direct molecular reaction of the vitamin on the toxin. We were unable to confirm earlier reports of detoxification by the vitamin in vitro, except by a non-specific effect of the acid (5).
