The controversy surrounding RFT can be difficult to fully appreciate, partly because of the complexity of the theory itself and partly because the debate has spanned several years and several journals. Abstract:Abstract Relational frame theory (RFT) as a behavior-analytic approach to understanding human language and cognition is now over 40 years old. However, the last 8 years have seen a relatively intense period of empirical and conceptual developments within the theory. Some of this work has begun to draw on early and much underplayed features of RFT, including field-theoretical analyses and concepts. These analyses are relatively nascent and thus the current article aims to provide a relatively detailed example of a field-theoretical analysis of a specific RFT research program. We begin with a brief overview of the “traditional” RFT approach to human language and cognition, followed by a summary of recent research involving the implicit relational assessment procedure (IRAP) and the differential arbitrarily applicable relational responding effects (DAARRE) model. We then go on to consider the DAARRE model in the context of J. R. Kantor’s interbehavioral formula for the psychological event. Having done so, we conclude that the challenge involved in analyzing increasingly complex forms of human language and cognition appears to call for more field-based theorizing in some form or another.

Abstract:We show how a control system model of behavior called Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) can provide a unifying framework for research in all traditional areas of psychology—as a basis for building hypotheses, working models, and applications. PCT views behavior, at all levels, as the control of perceptual inputs. This view is virtually the opposite of that of now standard models—exemplified by the General Linear Model—which view behavior as controlled by perceptual inputs. The PCT model calls for a new approach to research that is aimed at discovering the input variables that organisms control, rather than the input variables that control organisms. This new approach, called The Test for the Controlled Variable, can be applied to the study of all aspects of behavior, from motor control to cognitive neuroscience to counseling and clinical psychology.

Abstract:Humans have two superpowers: reaching desired end-states (goals) and working together (cooperation). We conceptualize these two capabilities as one: collective action control. We discuss ubiquitous processes and (potential) cultural differences in collective action control in the context of two established frameworks—social identity and norms—as well as an emerging attribution of intent perspective. We illustrate collective action control processes by discussing responses to critical feedback during goal pursuit, as exemplified in research on the rejection of intergroup criticism (Intergroup Sensitivity Effect). Established frameworks did not predict the pattern of current empirical observations. We therefore call for developing the attribution of intent account through systematic theory building and research to identify the ubiquitous and culture-specific processes of collective action control.

Abstract:Relational Frame Theory (RFT) has made a very respectable empirical and theoretical showing in the psychological literature during the past decade, but the theory still remains unknown or unappreciated by most cognitive and behavioral psychologists. This article highlights why this might be the case, and presents RFT in a simplified, systematic manner, in part by comparing it to a well-known cognitive model. Finally, the article outlines RFT's relatively unique contributions to psychological accounts of language and cognition, and addresses some of RFT's scientific and applied implications.

Abstract:People regularly encounter various types of conflict. Here, we ask if, and, if so, how, different types of conflict, from lab-based Stroop conflicts to everyday-life self-control or moral conflicts, are related to one other. We present a framework that assumes that action-goal representations are hierarchically organized, ranging from concrete actions to abstract goals. The framework's key assumption is that conflicts involving more abstract goals (e.g., self-control/moral conflict) are embedded in a more complex action space; thus, to resolve such conflicts, people need to consider more associated goals and actions. We discuss how differences in complexity impact conflict resolution mechanisms and the costs/benefits of resolving conflicts. Altogether, we offer a new way to conceptualize and analyze conflict regulation across different domains.

Abstract:Self-control is a hot topic across disciplines. As such, consensus on defining self-control is critical for advancing both scientific progress as well as societal impact of research findings. Specifically, the emergence of initiation as a self-control component, and the notion of effortless and strategic self-control, give rise to the question whether and how to distinguish self-control from self-regulation. In this paper, I propose an operational definition of self-control, based on converging definitions from the literature as well as on the emergence of new perspectives on self-control. The TOTE-model (Test-Operate-Test-Exit) of self-regulation will serve as a basis for this definition as it gives clear guidance for the inclusion of self-control as a component of, but not synonymous to self-regulation. Ultimately, an 'operational' definition is proposed in which self-regulation entails scaffolding for goal pursuit, including setting standards, and monitoring discrepancies, whereas self-control entails everything that one does in the 'operate' phase. This perspective allows for inclusion of traditional as well as contemporary research on self-control, and can provide direction for future studies.

Abstract:Multidrug resistance is one of the most serious problems in the treatment of epilepsy and is likely to have a complex genetic and environmental basis. Various experimental data support the hypothesis that overexpression of antiepileptic drug transporters may be important. However, key questions concerning their functionality remain unanswered. The first study reporting a positive association – between genetic variation in a putative antiepileptic drug transporter (P-glycoprotein, encoded by ABCB1) and multidrug resistant epilepsy was published in 2003. Since then, several other association genetics studies have sought to confirm this result, but, taken overall, do not support a major role for this polymorphism. Lessons learnt from the ABCB1 studies can help guide future association genetics studies, both for multidrug resistance in epilepsy, and for other epilepsy phenotypes.

Abstract:The present research explores a self-control operation, namely, counteractive construal, that helps consumers resolve the conflicts between an important goal and a short-term temptation by altering the construal of the temptation. We propose that when experiencing a self-control conflict, consumers intentionally construe temptation as more damaging to the attainment of a long-term goal and use these distorted construals to help resolve the conflict in favor of the goals. Four studies in two self-regulatory domains (a dieting goal and an academic goal) provided converging evidence for the counteractive construal hypothesis. We found that people who were experiencing self-control conflict expected tempting food items to contain more calories or expected parties to take more time away from studying and were consequently less interested in consuming these temptations.

Abstract:Why do states respond non-coercively in the face of crisis? Existing scholarship within international relations has stagnated in its conclusions regarding understanding this occurrence. This perspective article attempts to bridge the self-control theory of social psychology to provide a more nuanced understanding of why states self-refrain themselves from taking aggressive retaliatory foreign policies in state-to-state crises. It argues the importance of cognitive-affective units, such as encodings, expectancies, beliefs, goals, values, and self-regulatory plans, as the sociological interpretation of why states are committed to pursuing delayed rewards. It builds upon existing sociological theories adopted in international relations scholarship, such as state identities and role conceptions, and further considers the social psychology variables detrimental in self-control theories, and argues for its relevance to decompose the ability of a state to prioritize delayed gratification over immediate awards in tensions faced.

Abstract:Modern Control Theory and the Limits of Criminal Justice updates and extends the authors’ classic general theory of crime (sometimes referred to as “self-control theory”). In Part I, contemporary evidence about the theory is summarized. Research from criminology, psychology, economics, education, and public health substantially supports the lifelong influence of self control as a significant cause of problem behaviors, including delinquency and crime, substance abuse, school problems, many forms of accidents, employment instability, and many poor health outcomes. Contemporary evidence is supportive of the theory’s focus on early socialization for creation of higher levels of self control and other dimensions of the theory, including the roles of self control, age and the generality or versatility of problem behaviors, as well as the connections between self control and later teen and adult problem behaviors. The book provides methodological assessments of research on the theory, contrasting the control theory perspective with other developmental perspectives in criminology. The role of opportunity, the relationship between self and social control theory, and the role of motivation are addressed. In Part II, control theory is taken to be a valid theory and is used to explore the role of criminal sanctions, especially policing and prisons, and policies about immigration, as methods to impact crime. Modern control theory provides an explanation for the general lack of effectiveness of formal, state sanctions on crime and instead provides substantial justification for prevention of delinquency and crime by a focus on childhood. The theory effectively demonstrates the limits of criminal sanctions and the connection between higher levels of self control and positive life-course outcomes.
Progression of mineral metabolism derangements in childhood chronic renal failure.

Abstract:2 groups of children affected by different degrees of chronic renal failure (group 1, 55-36 ml/min/1.73 m2; group 2, 35-20 ml/min/1.73 m2 of creatinine clearance) due to tubulo-interstitial disease were studied for one year. The spontaneous evolution of altered mineral metabolism at different levels of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was aimed at. Parathyroid hormone, vitamin D metabolites and bone mineral content were evaluated. At the end of the year, only a decrease of plasma levels of 1,25(OH)2D in group 1 and a worsening of all mineral metabolism parameters in group 2 were found. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that mineral metabolism derangements progress rapidly after a certain 'threshold' of endocrinologically active renal mass is reached. The falling of plasma 1,25(OH)2D levels below a still undetermined critical value might be assumed as an index of this threshold.

Abstract:How everyday self-control conflicts are resolved can have significant long-term personal and societal consequences, as readily illustrated by obesity, smoking, and unsustainable consumption. Here, we delineate connections between current self-control research and policymaking. We first discuss the achievements and shortcomings of the prevailing individual-level focus in self-control research. Next, we propose a multilevel perspective that incorporates structural factors operating at the micro, meso, and macro levels as the root cause of many issues framed as self-control problems. We then introduce a comprehensive framework (4LP) synthesizing four key levers for public policymaking. We conclude that future policy research may benefit from closer, interdisciplinary collaboration to better represent the complex interplay between individual agency and structural factors regarding self-control outcomes.

Control-Theoretic Analysis of Shared Control Systems

Abstract:Users of shared control systems change their behavior in the presence of assistance, which conflicts with assumpts about user behavior that some assistance methods make. In this paper, we propose an analysis technique to evaluate the user's experience with the assistive systems that bypasses required assumptions: we model the assistance as a dynamical system that can be analyzed using control theory techniques. We analyze the shared autonomy assistance algorithm and make several observations: we identify a problem with runaway goal confidence and propose a system adjustment to mitigate it, we demonstrate that the system inherently limits the possible actions available to the user, and we show that in a simplified setting, the effect of the assistance is to drive the system to the convex hull of the goals and, once there, add a layer of indirection between the user control and the system behavior. We conclude by discussing the possible uses of this analysis for the field.

Why Teachers Adopt a Controlling Motivating Style Toward Students and How They Can Become More Autonomy Supportive

Abstract:A recurring paradox in the contemporary K-12 classroom is that, although students educationally and developmentally benefit when teachers support their autonomy, teachers are often controlling during instruction. To understand and remedy this paradox, the article pursues three goals. First, the article characterizes the controlling style by defining it, articulating the conditions under which it is most likely to occur, linking it to poor student outcomes, explaining why it undermines these outcomes, identifying its manifest instructional behaviors, and differentiating it from an autonomy-supportive style. Second, the article identifies seven reasons to explain why the controlling style is so prevalent. These reasons show how pressures on teachers from above, from below, and from within can create classroom conditions that make the controlling style both understandable and commonplace. Third, the article offers a remedy to the paradox by articulating how teachers can become more autonomy supportive. Three essential tasks are discussed. Special attention is paid to practical examples of what teachers can do to support students' autonomy.

Abstract:This paper is intended to bridge Dr. Trommsdorff’s review of cultural differences in socialization (e.g., Rothbaum & Trommsdorff, 2007) with recent theorizing about primary and secondary control (Rothbaum & Wang, in press). Dr. Trommsdorff has a longstanding interest in control as it pertains to culture and socialization (e.g., Trommsdorff, 1995). Primary control is defined as changing the world to fit the self, as seen for example when the child loses interest in one toy and selects a new toy to play with, or when the child modifies that toy in desired ways. Secondary control is defined as changing the self to fit the world, as seen for example in focusing on accepting the toys one already has, in focusing on desirable aspects of those toys, and playing with the toys in ways and at times dedicated for length of time dictated by caregivers and prevailing norms. We are invested in building on Dr. Trommsdorff’s rich descriptions of how socio-cultural contexts influence the development of children’s primary and secondary control (e.g., Trommsdorff & Friedlmeier, 1993).

Abstract:While AI algorithms have shown remarkable success in various fields, their lack of transparency hinders their application to real-life tasks. Although explanations targeted at non-experts are necessary for user trust and human-AI collaboration, the majority of explanation methods for AI are focused on developers and expert users. Counterfactual explanations are local explanations that offer users advice on what can be changed in the input for the output of the black-box model to change. Counterfactuals are user-friendly and provide actionable advice for achieving the desired output from the AI system. While extensively researched in supervised learning, there are few methods applying them to reinforcement learning (RL). In this work, we explore the reasons for the underrepresentation of a powerful explanation method in RL. We start by reviewing the current work in counterfactual explanations in supervised learning. Additionally, we explore the differences between counterfactual explanations in supervised learning and RL and identify the main challenges that prevent the adoption of methods from supervised in reinforcement learning. Finally, we redefine counterfactuals for RL and propose research directions for implementing counterfactuals in RL.

Abstract:Research on cognitive control and executive function has long recognized the relevance of motivational factors. Recently, however, the topic has come increasingly to center stage, with a surge of new studies examining the interface of motivation and cognitive control. In the present article we survey research situated at this interface, considering work from cognitive and social psychology and behavioral economics, but with a particular focus on neuroscience research. We organize existing findings into three core areas, considering them in the light of currently vying theoretical perspectives. Based on the accumulated evidence, we advocate for a view of control function that treats it as a domain of reward-based decision making. More broadly, we argue that neuroscientific evidence plays a critical role in understanding the mechanisms by which motivation and cognitive control interact. Opportunities for further cross-fertilization between behavioral and neuroscientific research are highlighted.

Abstract:Cognitive control (with the closely related concepts of attention control and executive function) encompasses the collection of processes that are involved in generating and maintaining appropriate task goals and suppressing task goals that are no longer relevant, as well as the way in which current goal representations are used to modify attentional biases to improve task performance. Here, we provide a comprehensive but nonexhaustive review of this complex literature, with an emphasis on the contributions made by techniques for studying human brain function. The review is divided into five sections: (a) overview and historical perspective of cognitive control, its subcomponent processes, and its neural substrate; (b) most common types of tasks used to assess and/or manipulate the level of control; (c) main research findings obtained with various imaging methodologies, with a focus on ERP data, and briefer overviews of oscillatory (event-related spectral perturbations) and fMRI data; (d) major theories of cognitive control; and (e) discussion of open questions regarding how to integrate the various dimensions of control, as well as the faster versus slower temporal dynamics informing this complex and multifaceted concept.
