Abstract:The application of Si-based anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has garnered significant attention due to their high theoretical specific capacity yet is still challenged by the substantial volume expansion of silicon particles during the lithiation process, resulting in the instability of the electrode-electrolyte interphase and deteriorative battery performance. Herein, an ortho(trimethylsilyl)oxybenzene electrolyte additive, 1,2-bis((trimethylsilyl)oxy) benzene (referred to as BTMSB), has been investigated as a bifunctional electrolyte additive for Si-based LIBs. The BTMSB can form a uniform and robust LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of Si-based material particles, adapting the huge volume expansion of the Si-based electrode and facilitating lithium-ion transport. Additionally, the BTMSB demonstrates the ability to scavenge hydrofluoric acid (HF) to stabilize the electrode-electrolyte interphase. The SiOx/C∥Li batteries with 2% BTMSB exhibit improved cycle performance and current-rate capabilities, of which the capacity retention retains 69% after 400 cycles. Furthermore, Si-based anode cells with higher theoretical specific capacities (1C = 550 mAh g-1) and NCM523∥SiOx/C pouch cells are constructed and evaluated, displaying superior cycle performance. This work provides valuable insights for the development of effective electrolyte additives and the commercialization of high energy density LIBs with Si-based anodes.

Abstract:Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) is a promising alternative salt for Li‐ion batteries. Unlike theconventional LiPF6, it is not prone to HF formation, and thus resistant to moisture. However, for cell voltages relevant for high energy cathodes (> 4.2 V), the aluminium current collector will corrode in electrolytes based on this salt, and mitigation strategies are needed. Here, the useof Lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) and Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) salts as additives is investigated, in order to enable the use of LiFSI‐based electrolytes. The performance of the electrolytes is evaluated separately for high content silicon Li(Ni0.4Co0.4Mn0.2)O2 (NMC442) cathodes and the aluminium current collector by electrochemical methodsand post mortem analysis by SEM imaging and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrolytes withLiDFOB as additive showed the best performance for all components, and were therefore selected for cycling infull cells, composed of silicon anodes and NMC442. Results show that LiFSI‐based electrolytes with addition ofLiDFOB has an electrochemical performance similar to conventional electrolytes, and is thus a competitive, alternative electrolyte with a low fluorine content. Furthermore, it is verified that the good SEI forming properties of LiFSI based electrolytes known from cycling in half cells, is alsopreserved during cycling in full cells

Abstract:The optimal silicon electrode that should have a practical capacity of roughly 1200 mAh/g for a balanced lithium-ion cell is a dream and thus a challenge. Pulverization of silicon particles and loss of electrical contact have been identified as the main causes for the performance deterioration. Binder formulations, cut-off window for the cycling, and electrolyte composition with different additives are some routes to take to improve the long-term cycling stability of the electrode. In this presentation, we will especially focus on characterization of the SEI and the buried interface below the SEI which can give us new light on how to improve the use of silicon 1,2,3,4 We will discuss how different lithium salts can give very different SEI compositions and buried interfaces. We will also show how some of the salts will give SEIs that are porous and other that lead to a continuous growing SEI as a function of cycling. The role of state of charge on the growth of SEI will be discussed. The lessons we have learnt about the SEI on silicon will be dwelt upon by giving examples on strategies to improve cycling stability. We will show how a 3D hierarchical arrangement of spatially confined Si nanocrystals, within several different physical insulting capsules, can be one way of improving the performance. Firstly, an elastic, highly oriented graphene monolith (GF) has been engineered to fully encapsulate Si nanoparticles, serving as a robust framework with accessible thoroughfares for electrolyte percolation. The framework is also acting as an electrolyte blocking layer to restrain Si from direct exposure to electrolyte without sacrificing the highly efficient electron/Li ion transport channels. The Si nanoparticles are arranged in pillars within the hierarchical structure. This seems to be to prevent the graphene sheets from re-stacking. Secondly, a TiOxFy layer was grown on the silicon surface to support in-situ etching of the native oxide layer into a hollow interior. When evaluated as binder-free anodes, both types of electrodes exhibit cycle life for more than 1000 cycles with average coulombic efficiencies higher than 99.5%. Operando XRD and synchrotron-based XPS confirmed the formation of the most volume expanded lithiated phase Li15Si4, suggesting the effective buffering of the volume variation upon cycling. Furthermore, we have also developed a GF/Si free-standing film through re-adjusting the pore size in GF/Si monolith. Thanks to high electrical conductivity, the elasticity and structural integrity of GF monoliths, the as-developed GF/Si free-standing film showcases the potential use in the flexible electronic devices. Evaluation of Selected Ionic Liquids as Electrolytes for Silicon Anodes in Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this work, four selected ionic liquids (ILs), in combination with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide salt (LiFSI) were explored as electrolytes for anodes made from micron-sized metallurgical grade silicon. The ionic liquids were based on the cations; pyrrolidinium (PYR13), imidazolium (EMI) and phosphonium (P111i4) and the anions; bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) and bis(trifluorosulfonyl)imide (TFSI). The cycling stability and rate performance were investigated in pseudo-full cells with silicon anode and commercial LiFePO4, and compared to a carbonate electrolyte. Electrolytes based on PYR13FSI and P111i4FSI exhibit a decent rate performance up to C/5 and showed stable cycling over ∼100 cycles, maintaining a reversible capacity of >1200 mAh gSi-1 at cycle 100 (C/5 rate) and over 2000 mAh gSi-1 at C/20. These electrolytes also had the best oxidation stability (> 5.3 V vs Li/Li). Based on assessment of the limiting current density in symmetrical cells, the Li-ion mobility was determined to be slightly higher for EMIFSI, but differences in Li-ion mobility cannot account for the differences in cycling stability among these electrolytes. While the SEI formed in EMIFSI electrolyte is the most conductive, the highest coulombic efficiency was obtained for PYR13FSI, indicating that the best passivating SEI was formed in this electrolyte.

Abstract:Silicon is considered as a promising candidate of the anode material for the next generation lithium-ion batteries, due to its substantially higher gravimetric and volumetric capacity compared to conventionally used graphite. Electrolyte additives, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) particularly, are usually applied for silicon-based lithium-ion batteries to tackle the problems such as poor capacity retention and low coulombic efficiency.1-3 In the present work, the decomposition mechanism of FEC as well as the surface modification of Si electrodes were investigated.4 It was observed that the FEC additive degrades at a higher reduction potential prior to the other carbonate solvents. A conformal solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which consists of the decomposition products of FEC, is instantaneously formed on the silicon electrode as a result. This stable SEI layer sufficiently limits the emergence of cracks and suppresses the additional SEI formation from the decomposition of other electrolyte components. Both of these effects lead to a slower increase in polarization, thus a slower capacity fading, for the FEC containing cell. The differences in the SEI layer, formed with or without the presence of FEC, are schematically demonstrated in Fig 1. Besides, it was also observed that the LiPF6 decomposition can be influenced with the presence of FEC, and this was further studied with a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. We also demonstrated that by forming an effective SEI layer with the FEC and VC electrolyte additives, the silicon electrodes can be equally well functioning with a novel lithium 4,5-dicyano-2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazolide (LiTDI)-based electrolyte as with the state-of-art LiPF6-based electrolyte.5 Figure 1
Influence of Carbonate Solvents on Solid Electrolyte Interphase Composition over Si Electrodes Monitored by In Situ and Ex Situ Spectroscopies

Abstract:A solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on Si-based anodes should have high mechanical properties to adapt the volume changes of Si with low thickness and good ionic conductivity. To better understand the influence of carbonate solvents on the SEI composition and mechanism of formation, systematic studies were performed using dimethyl carbonate (DMC) or propylene carbonate (PC) solvent and LiPF6 as a salt. A 1 M LiPF6/EC-DMC was used for comparison. The surface chemical composition of the Si electrode was analyzed at different potentials of lithiation/delithiation and after a few cycles. Ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry results demonstrate that a thinner and more stable SEI layer is formed in LiPF6/DMC. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proves that the coordination between Li+ and DMC is weaker, and fewer DMC molecules take part in the formation of the SEI layer. The higher capacity retention during 60 cycles and less significant morphological modifications of the Si electrode in 1 M LiPF6/DMC compared to other electrolytes were demonstrated, confirming a good and stable interfacial layer. The possible surface reactions are discussed, and the difference in the mechanisms of formation of SEI in these three various electrolytes is proposed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Silicon as a negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries has attracted tremendous attention due to its high theoretical capacity, and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) was used as an electrolyte additive, which significantly improved the cyclability of silicon-based electrodes in this study. The decomposition of the FEC additive was investigated by synchrotron-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) giving a chemical composition depth-profile. The reduction products of FEC were found to mainly consist of LiF and -CHF-OCO2-type compounds. Moreover, FEC influenced the lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) decomposition reaction and may have suppressed further salt degradation. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed from the decomposition of ethylene carbonate (EC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC), without the FEC additive present, covered surface voids and lead to an increase in polarization. However, in the presence of FEC, which degrades at a higher reduction potential than EC and DEC, instantaneously a conformal SEI was formed on the silicon electrode. This stable SEI layer sufficiently limited the emergence of large cracks and preserved the original surface morphology as well as suppressed the additional SEI formation from the other solvent. This study highlights the vital importance of how the chemical composition and morphology of the SEI influence battery performance.
Perfluoroinated Ionomer as an Artificial SEI for Silicon Nano-Flake Anode in LiTFSI/Tetraglyme Solvate Ionic Liquid

Abstract:Cycle performance of silicon nano-flake powder (LeafPower ® Si) anodes was improved by coating of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers (Nafion ® and Aquivion ® ) as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The Si electrodes were coated with PFSA ionomer by addition of PFSA ionomer solution to aqueous slurry of the Si composite electrode. H + -type Nafion ® -coated Si electrodes demonstrated improved capacity retentions and Coulombic efficiencies owing to the formation of a LiF-rich SEI composed of reductive decomposition products of Nafion ® . The Nafion ® coating suppressed the increase in polarization and the electrode swelling upon cycling because the LiF-rich SEI effectively suppressed electrolyte decomposition. Li + and Cs + -type Nafion ® and H + -type Aquivion ® , which has a shorter side chain than Nafion ® , provided similar positive effects on cycle performance of the Si electrodes. Furthermore, the Si electrodes achieved good cycleability up to 500 cycles owing to synergy effects of the Nafion ® coating and an SEI-forming additive of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC).

Abstract:An electrolyte based on the new salt, lithium 4,5-dicyano-2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazolide (LiTDI), is evaluated in combination with nano-Si composite electrodes for potential use in Li-ion batteries. The additives fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) are also added to the electrolyte to enable an efficient SEI formation. By employing hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), the SEI formation and the development of the active material is probed during the first 100 cycles. With this electrolyte formulation, the Si electrode can cycle at 1200 mAh g(-1) for more than 100 cycles at a coulombic efficiency of 99%. With extended cycling, a decrease in Si particle size is observed as well as an increase in silicon oxide amount. As opposed to LiPF6 based electrolytes, this electrolyte or its decomposition products has no side reactions with the active Si material. The present results further acknowledge the positive effects of SEI forming additives. It is suggested that polycarbonates and a high LiF content are favorable components in the SEI over other kinds of carbonates formed by ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) decomposition. This work thus confirms that LiTDI in combination with the investigated additives is a promising salt for Si electrodes in future Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:<p>Silicon is one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to its low cost, high energy density and abundant resources. However, fast capacity decay caused by the huge volume changes and the unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) limits its commercial applications. In this work, the effects of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF<sub>6</sub>) and lithium difluoroacetate borate (LiDFOB) on the performance of microsized silicon anode were compared using nonflammable pure trimethyl phosphate (TMP) as the solvent. It is found that microsized silicon anode with 1M LiDFOB /TMP electrolyte can produce a more stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), which effectively prevents capacity loss. The capacity has a high retention even after 100 cycles with nearly 100% coulombic efficiency. Moreover, 5V-class cathode shows a better cycling stability with LiDFOB salt. This work may provide a novel direction for expanding the fields of lithium-ion batteries anode which has high safety and high energy density.</p>

Abstract:The application of micrometer-sized silicon (mSi) is challenging due to the severe volume change during cycling, resulting in serious pulverization of the mSi and detachment of active materials from the current collector and consequently causing a capacity loss. Here, a new LiPF6-compatible ether electrolyte is developed to enhance the cycling performance of the mSi anode. Ethylene glycol dibutyl ether (EGDE) with large steric hindrance renders PF6 –-rich solvation complexes in the electrolyte, which are favorable for rapidly passivating the mSi anode surface and forming a LiF-rich, thin, and stratified solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). As a result, the mSi anode displays a high capacity retention of 1901 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles and a high CE of 99.92% in a medium-concentration EGDE-LiPF6-based electrolyte. This work provides an effective strategy for extending the cycling life of the mSi anode by designing a new LiPF6-ether electrolyte system.

Abstract:The silicon (Si) anode is considered one of the most promising candidates among many novel anode materials in lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and earth abundancy. Nonetheless, a large volume expansion of Si particles appears with cycling, prompting unceasing breakage/reformation of the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) and fast capacity degradation in traditional electrolytes. For the purpose of tolerating volume expansion for the Si anode, lithium difluoro(bisoxalato) phosphate (LiDFBOP) was adopted in the standard (STD) electrolyte based on LiPF6. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, Young’s modulus from atomic force microscopy, potential-resolved in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PRI-EIS) measurement, and other characterizations proved that the formed SEI can inhibit volume expansion of a Si@Graphite@C anode. In the STD+2% LiDFBOP electrolyte, the solvation structure of Li(EC)2(PF6)1(DFBOP)1 is more likely to be produced, and this kind of solvation structure has stronger reducibility and easily participates in SEI formation. The 2% LiDFBOP additive increases the inorganic LiF component of SEI, which yields great advantages in regulating the uniform diffusion of Li+ ions passing through the SEI. Besides, the organics containing P and F atoms are also abundant in SEI, which has greater flexibility and can tolerate volume expansion of the Si@Graphite@C anode. Therefore, the STD+2% LiDFBOP electrolyte can improve the electrochemical performances of Si@Graphite@C/Li half-cells. This work has practical implications not only for the molecular design of novel lithium salt but also for the constructions of SEI and electrolyte systems compatible with the Si@Graphite@C anode.

Abstract:Fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) are considered the most effective electrolyte additives for improving the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) of Si‐containing anodes while lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) is known to improve the interphases of cathode materials and graphite. Here, we combine VC, FEC, and different amounts of LiDFP in a highly‐concentrated electrolyte to investigate the effect on Si‐dominant anodes in detail. Cycle life tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and rate tests with anode potential monitoring were conducted in Si/NCM pouch cells. The results reveal that adding LiDFP to the electrolyte improves all performance criteria of the full cells, with a concentration of 1 wt.% being the optimal value for most cases. Post‐mortem analyses using scanning electron microscopy and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that a more beneficial SEI film was formed for higher LiDFP concentrations, which led to less decomposition of electrolyte components and a better‐maintained anode microstructure.

Tuning the Formation and Structure of the Silicon Electrode/Ionic Liquid Electrolyte Interphase in Superconcentrated Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The latest advances in the stabilization of Li/Na metal battery and Li-ion battery cycling have highlighted the importance of electrode/electrolyte interface [solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)] and its direct link to cycling behavior. To understand the structure and properties of the SEI, we used combined experimental and computational studies to unveil how the ionic liquid (IL) cation nature and salt concentration impact the silicon/IL electrolyte interfacial structure and the formed SEI. The nature of the IL cation is found to be important to control the electrolyte reductive decomposition that influences the SEI composition and properties and the reversibility of the Li-Si alloying process. Also, increasing the Li salt concentration changes the interface structure for a favorable and less resistive SEI. The most promising interface for the Si-based battery was found to be in P1222FSI with 3.2 m LiFSI, which leads to an optimal SEI after 100 cycles in which LiF and trapped LiFSI are the only distinguishable lithiated and fluorinated products detected. This study shows a clear link between the nanostructure of the IL electrolyte near the electrode surface, the resulting SEI, and the Si negative electrode cycling performance. More importantly, this work will aid the rational design of Si-based Li-ion batteries using IL electrolytes in an area that has so far been neglected, reinforcing the benefits of superconcentrated electrolyte systems.

Abstract:An electrolyte consisting of lithium nitrate (LiNO 3 ) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) in ethylene carbonate (EC), ethylmethyl carbonate (EMC), and triethyl phosphate (TEP) is used to improve the long-term cycling stability of silicon anodes. TEP was selected for its ability to dissolve LiNO 3 in carbonates to a concentration of ∼0.2 M. The large amount of LiNO 3 combined with the LiDFOB salt leads to a capacity retention of 87.1% after one hundred cycles due to the formation of a relatively stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Ex-situ surface analysis reveals that the SEI consists of oxalates, lithium alkyl carbonates, borates, and nitrate reduction products. By selecting two components which are preferentially reduced (LiNO 3 and LiDFOB), the SEI is able to inhibit continuous solvent decomposition and allows for improved electrochemical cycling for pure silicon anodes.

Abstract:In this work, the synergistic effect of cyclic fluorinated phosphazene compounds with fluoroethylene carbonate as electrolyte additives is reported when using Si‐based anodes in lithium‐ion batteries. The pouch cell investigations reveal a significantly improved long‐term performance with the dual additive approach. Silicon, as potential next‐generation anode material for high‐energy lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), suffers from substantial volume changes during (dis)charging, resulting in continuous breakage and (re‐)formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), as well as from consumption of electrolyte and active lithium, which negatively impacts long‐term performance and prevents silicon‐rich anodes from practical application. In this work, fluorinated phosphazene compounds are investigated as electrolyte additives concerning their SEI‐forming ability for boosting the performance of silicon oxide (SiOx)‐based LIB cells. In detail, the electrochemical performance of NCM523 || SiOx/C pouch cells is studied, in combination with analyses regarding gas evolution properties, post‐mortem morphological changes of the anode electrode and the SEI, as well as possible electrolyte degradation. Introducing the dual‐additive approach in state‐of‐the‐art electrolytes leads to synergistic effects between fluoroethylene carbonate and hexafluorocyclotriphosphazene‐derivatives (HFPN), as well as enhanced electrochemical performance. The formation of a more effective SEI and increased electrolyte stabilization improves lifetime and results in an overall lower cell impedance. Furthermore, gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry measurements of the aged electrolyte with HFPN‐derivatives as an additive compound show suppressed ethylene carbonate and ethyl methyl carbonate decomposition, as well as reduced trans‐esterification and oligomerization products in the aged electrolyte.

Abstract:Three different organic solvents (dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) were used to improve the solubility of LiNO3 in a standard carbonate-based electrolyte with lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) as the salt. Together, the LiDFOB and organic-solvent solubilized LiNO3 preferentially reduce on the surface of silicon-containing anodes to create a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) rich in oxalates, nitrate decomposition species, and B-F species. The improved stability of the SEI throughout the first 100 cycles results in silicon and silicon/graphite composite anodes with better capacity retention than observed with standard electrolytes or fluoroethylene carbonate containing electrolytes. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the use of non-traditional electrolyte solvents in the improvement and optimization of lithium ion-battery electrolytes.
