Abstract:In recent years, U3Si2 has been proposed as an alternative nuclear fuel material to uranium dioxide (UO2) because of its intrinsically high uranium density and thermal conductivity. However, the operation environment in the nuclear reactor is complex and extreme, such as in-pile neutron irradiation, and thus it is necessary to explore the radiation response behavior of U3Si2 and the physical properties of its damaged states. In the present study, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory were carried out to investigate the mechanical and electronic properties of defective U3Si2. Our results showed that the defect stability in U3Si2, except its interstitial defects, is dependent on its chemical environment. When vacancy, antisite or interstitial defects are introduced into U3Si2, its elastic modulus are decreased and its ductility is enhanced. Although the presence of defects in U3Si2 does not change its metallic nature and the electron distribution in its Fermi level, their effect on the partial chemical bonding interaction is significant. This study suggests that under a radiation environment, the created defects in U3Si2 remarkably affect its mechanical and electronic properties.

Abstract:The structures, point defects and impacts of fission products for U3Si (\b{eta}-U3Si and {\gamma}-U3Si) and USi2 ({\alpha}-USi2 and \b{eta}-USi2) are studied by first-principles calculations. The lattice parameters of U3Si and USi2 are calculated and the stability of different types of point defects is predicted by their formation energies. The results show that silicon vacancies are more prone to be produced than uranium vacancies in \b{eta}-USi2 matrix, while uranium vacancies are the most stable defects of other three types of crystallographic structures. The most favorable sites of fission products (strontium, barium, cerium and neodymium) are determined in this work as well. By calculating incorporation energies of fission products, we demonstrate that the uranium site is the most favored for all the fissions products. Comparing the structural changes influenced by different fission products, it is also found that the highest volume change is caused by barium interstitials. According to the current data, rare earth elements cerium and neodymium are found to be more stable than alkaline earth metals strontium and barium in a given nuclear matrix. Finally, it is also determined that in USi2 crystal lattice fission products tend to be stabilized in uranium substitution sites, while they are likely to form precipitates from the U3Si matrix. It is expected that this work may provide new insight into the mechanism for structural evolutions of silicide nuclear fuels in a reactor.

Abstract:Helium (He) is a typical impurity element and plays a crucial role in the microstructural evolution in nuclear materials under irradiation. Here, we systematically investigate the interactions between He and self-interstitial atoms (SIAs) as well as their influences on the kinetic behaviors of SIAs in tungsten (W), using both first-principles and object kinetic Monte Carlo methods. It is found that there are attractive interactions between He and SIAs, which become stronger with the increasing of SIA numbers. Specifically, the He-SIA1 and He-SIA2 complexes adopt a three-dimensional (3D) migration pattern with an effective energy barrier of 0.38 and 0.61 eV, respectively, which is completely different from the 1D migration of SIAs in W (⩽0.033 eV) without He. Such an unexpected collaborative 3D motion of He-SIA complexes increases the probability of vacancy-interstitial recombination and reduces the number of surviving defects. Consequently, our calculations reveal the enhanced effect of He on the self-healing efficiency in W, which is originated from the collaborative 3D motion of He-SIA complexes. The current results can improve our fundamental understanding of the influence of He on the evolution of irradiation defects and have great implications to estimate the performance of W-PFMs in fusion environment.

Helium Behavior in Oxide Nuclear Fuels: First Principles Modeling

Abstract:UO2 and (U,Pu)O2 solid solutions (the so-called MOX) nowadays are used as commercial nuclear fuels in many countries. One of the safety issues during the storage of these fuels is related to their self-irradiation that produces and accumulates point defects and helium therein. We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations for UO2, PuO2 and MOX containing He atoms in octahedral interstitial positions. In particular, we calculated basic MOX properties and He incorporation energies as functions of Pu concentration within the spin-polarized, generalized gradient approximation (GGA) DFT calculations. We also included the on-site electron correlation corrections using the Hubbard model (in the framework of the so-called DFT+U approach). We found that PuO2 remains semiconducting with He in the octahedral position while UO2 requires a specific lattice distortion. Both materials reveal a positive energy for He incorporation, which, therefore, is an exothermic process. The He incorporation energy increases with the Pu concentration in the MOX fuel.

Abstract:U3Si2 is proposed as a promising candidate for accident tolerant fuel (ATF) in recent years. Compared to previous extensively-used UO2 fuel, U3Si2 has the advantage of a higher fissile density and thermal conductivity, which allows for extra coping time in case of accidents. The phase stability and thermophysical properties of U3Si2 have been studied previously with the purpose of evaluating its fuel performance. Nevertheless, the critical issue of irradiation damage in the U3Si2 fuel is still an underexplored area, and the evolution mechanism of irradiation-induced defects remains unclear. In this work, we perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study defect evolution and defect properties in U3Si2. We simulate defect evolution by creating Frenkel defects directly in the system. We find that defects in U3Si2 prefer to form single or small defect clusters. With increasing defect concentration, amorphization is observed. To reveal the mechanism governing the observed defect evolution, we have carried out a systematic analysis of defect energetics and defect migration pathways in U3Si2. Our results indicate that VSi and Ui are stable defects after evolution, consistent with their low formation energies. Defect diffusion exhibits an anisotropic nature in U3Si2, with the fastest diffusion along the c direction instead of in the a-b plane for both vacancy and interstitial-mediated diffusion. These results are helpful in the understanding of irradiation behavior of U3Si2.

Abstract:U3Si2 is regarded as a promising accident tolerant fuel (ATF) to replace the commercial fuel UO2; however, grain boundary (GB) embrittlement of U3Si2 caused by irradiation-induced defect segregation remains to be clarified. In this work, the U3Si2 Σ5(210) symmetrically tilted GB is taken as a representative to elucidate the individual effect of xenon (Xe) and vacancy on the tensile strength and failure of GBs using first-principles calculations. Compared with the predicted segregation energies of defects at the most energetically favourable positions of GBs, Si vacancy (VSi) has a much stronger preference to segregate to GBs than that of Xe substitution on the Si sublattice (XeSi). Moreover, the strengthening/embrittlement potency of GBs with single vacancy/Xe is evaluated using the first-principles-based uniaxial tensile test. Although both VSi and XeSi yield a weakening effect on the strength of the U3Si2 Σ5(210) GB, such defective GBs exhibit significantly stronger interface strengths compared to the corresponding defects segregated to the UO2 Σ3(111) GB. The underlying mechanism of strength change of U3Si2 GBs is discussed in terms of charge analysis. Our results can provide a fundamental understanding of the mechanical behavior of irradiated GBs from an atomic perspective.
First-principles calculations to investigate mechanical, thermal, oxidation and hydrogen properties of Y, Zr and Nb alloyed U 3 Si 2

Abstract:Uranium silicide (U 3 Si 2 ) is considered a potential accident tolerant fuel for next-generation light water reactors, and the reliability of U 3 Si 2 in extreme environments can be further improved by alloying. In this study, the effects of Y, Zr and Nb alloying on the mechanical and thermal properties, oxidation resistance and hydrogen embrittlement resistance of U 3 Si 2 were systematically investigated by first principles. The enthalpy of formation and phonon dispersion curves indicate that the structures are still thermodynamically and dynamically stable after alloying. The addition of Nb improves the mechanical and thermal properties of U 3 Si 2 and its oxidation resistance. However, U 2.5 Si 2 Nb 0.5 (II) exhibited the worst resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. Furthermore, O and H atoms tend to dissolve in the OI(2) and TI sites, respectively. Alloying with elements of smaller atomic radius leads to a reduction in interstitial volume, which facilitates the bonding of O and H atoms with the interstitial atoms and enhances solubility. Moreover, the addition of Nb strengthens the electron bonding and local hybridization between O and H atoms and U atoms, as revealed by the PDOS, charge density and ELF. The findings provide useful information for the improvement and design of novel accident-tolerant fuel materials.

Abstract:Helium (He) exerts significant influence on the physicochemical, structural, and electronic properties of pyrochlores. This paper reviews recent advancements in computer simulations aimed at stabilizing nuclear waste, focusing on disordered structures of pyrochlores, zirconate pyrochlores, and high‐entropy pyrochlores. Using Pu‐La2Zr2O7 as a case study, we demonstrate how a first‐principles approach facilitates the understanding of how He modifies the structural and electronic properties of this system. The incorporation of He interstitials in Pu‐La2Zr2O7 typically leads to an expansion in lattice constant and volume swelling. Analysis of the formation energies in this system reveals that octahedral interstitial sites or zirconium (Zr) vacancy sites are favored for He occupation, resulting in the formation of substitutional He atoms. The low concentration of He atoms in Pu‐La2Zr2O7 reduces the formation energy of cation antisite defects. Bader charge analysis indicates that the bond exerts a greater influence on the irradiation resistance of the He‐Pu‐La2Zr2O7 system compared to the bond. Moreover, the capacity for He interstitials increases with higher Pu concentration in the octahedrons.

Abstract:Uranium silicide compounds have attracted intensive attention as candidate alternative fuels in commercial light water reactors (LWRs). In this work, the electronic, thermal, mechanical and elastic properties of U3Si5 are comprehensively investigated based on first-principles density functional calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. U3Si5 is determined to be a brittle and magnetic metal, and thermal conductivity is dominated by its electronic contribution at high temperature. The ratio between the bulk and shear moduli is 1.205. In addition, the elastic ideal strength is strongly anisotropic, with the minimum value only 6.831 GPa at a uniaxial tensile strain of 0.07. This low strength is mainly caused by an emerged structural transition forming silicon-silicon bonds to absorb strain energy. Moreover, the influences of aluminum incorporation on the structural and elastic properties, and thermal conductivities of U3Si5 are further studied. The aluminum atom prefers to replace the silicon atom at the vertex shared by the silicon triangles and pentagons. The incorporated atom impedes the structural transition, and enhances the toughness of U3Si5. The results from this work may provide useful clue for the improvement in the application of U3Si5.

Abstract:Ceramic composites are promising candidates as structural materials for future fission and fusion reactors. In present work, Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC ternary ceramic composites were irradiated with 2.0 MeV He-ions at 300 and 800 °C. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction results confirmed that there was irradiation induced shift and broadening of diffraction peaks, but no amorphization of Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC composite were observed up to fluence of 1.72 × 1018 ions/cm2. Transmission electron microscopy observations showed that throughout the entire irradiation region, nano-sized helium bubbles are mostly distributed in Al2O3 grains and partly in ZrO2 grains, while no detectable bubbles are observed in SiC grains. No obvious agglomeration of bubbles was found at grain/phase boundaries. By using nanoindentation technique, slight hardening or softening was confirmed for the samples irradiated at 300 and 800 °C respectively. The absence of amorphization and surface exfoliation indicating the Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC composite exhibits remarkable resistance to He-ions irradiation.

Abstract:Li4SiO4 crystal is a candidate material for tritium breeder material. Vacancy defects and He atoms will be produced in the crystal after neutron irradiation in fusion reactor. In previous research, we learned vacancy defects mainly include V-O(0), V-O(2+), and V-Li(0), meanwhile, He atoms are easy to migrate and aggregate in the crystal. In order to understand the relationship between vacancy defects and He atoms, we use density functional theory (DFT) to study the interaction mechanism between vacancy and He atom. The results show that the local stable sites of He atoms are related to the surrounding charge distribution. V-O(2+) and V-Li(0) can capture interstitial He atoms, and it is difficult to escape the vacancies, thereby increasing the nucleation center of He atoms. V-O(0) promotes the diffusion of He atoms in the interstitial space, which will cause small helium bubbles to merge more easily.
First-Principles Study of Helium Trapping in Carbide Precipitates (cr23c6) in Ferritic-Martensitic Steels

Abstract:Experiments observed preferential He bubble formation in carbide precipitates M23C6 during low-temperature He irradiation in ferritic-martensitic steels. However, the process and mechanism of He trapping in M23C6 present a challenge to measure. Using density functional theory, we have systematically investigated He distribution, migration, and accumulation in Cr23C6. The formation energies of interstitial and substitutional He in Cr23C6 are 3.50 and 3.16 eV, respectively, remarkably lower than those in Fe matrix. The higher solubility of He in Cr23C6 makes it an He-trapping center in martensitic steels. On the other hand, the migration barrier of interstitial He in Cr23C6 is 2.58 eV, about 2.52 eV higher than that in bulk Fe. Furthermore, we only find a very weak attraction potency for substitutional-interstitial He pair, 0.25 eV, and even no binding trend for interstitial-interstitial or substitutional-substitutional He pairs, which suggests that it is more difficult for He atoms to move and less powerful driving force to accumulate in Cr23C6 than those in Fe matrix. Our results indicate that the trapping effect results from a lower charge density zone in Cr23C6, and predict that the small and dense Cr23C6 particles may hinder bubble growth at the initial stage, which can improve the resistance to irradiation void swelling.

Abstract:At present, many experimental fast reactors have adopted alloy nuclear fuels, for example, U-Zr alloy fuels. During the neutron irradiation process, vacancies and hydrogen (H) impurity atoms can both exist in U-Zr alloy fuels. Here, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) is employed to study the behaviors of vacancies and H atoms in disordered-γ(U,Zr) as well as their impacts on the electronic structure and mechanical properties. The formation energy of vacancies and hydrogen solution energy are calculated. The effect of vacancies on the migration barrier of hydrogen atoms is revealed. The effect of vacancies and hydrogen atom on densities of states and elastic constants are also presented. The results illustrate that U vacancy is easier to be formed than Zr vacancy. The H interstitial prefers the tetrahedral site. Besides, U vacancy shows H-trap ability and can raise the H migration barrier. Almost all the defects lead to decreases in electrical conductivity and bulk modulus. It is also found that the main effect of defects is on the U-5f orbitals. This work provides a theoretical understanding of the effect of defects on the electronic and mechanical properties of U-Zr alloys, which is an essential step toward tailoring their performance.

Understanding xenon and vacancy behaviors in UO2, UN and U3Si2: A comparative ab initio study

Abstract:Extensive attention has been paid to accident tolerant fuels (ATFs), such as uranium mononitride (UN) and uranium sesquisilicide (U3Si2), which are regarded as the potential candidates to replace uranium dioxide (UO2) in light water reactor (LWR). However, the thermodynamic behavior of fission gas atom in these fuels that can quantitatively affect the burnup characteristics of ATF needs to be explored. To this end, the systematic ab initio investigation on the energetic properties of xenon (Xe)-vacancy complexes in UO2, UN and U3Si2 is performed with the GGA+U approach as well as the corrected chemical potential. The stabilities of Xe-vacancy clusters, including interstitial trap site (IS), mono-, bi- and tri-atomic vacancy, are thoroughly assessed. The formation energies of vacancy complexes indicate that it is more likely to form vacancy cluster defects and their complexes with Xe in UO2 and to generate mono-atomic vacancy and Xe-vacancy complex in both UN and U3Si2. Xe can be strictly confined by the trap sites in UO2 and UN, and yet in U3Si2, it prefers to move to the centre of a large free volume trap site. The strongest soluble characteristic of Xe in U3Si2 indicates excellent storage compacity of fission gas products in the matrix. This work can provide comprehensive insights into the original reason of interplay between Xe and vacancy as well as the thermodynamic behavior of those defects in the uranium-based fuels.

Abstract:The accumulated helium atoms mitigate the physical properties of nuclear waste forms through long-time radionuclide decay and thus cause the safety concern. In this work, first-principles calculations were carried out to investigate the effects of helium atoms on the structural, electronic, and mechanical properties of La2Sn2O7 pyrochlore. He atoms cause small volume swelling but no significant influence on its mechanical properties. The formation energy analysis suggests that octahedral interstitial sites are preferred. He interstitial may drive phase change from pyrochlore to the fluorite structure. The local electronic properties have also been analyzed to assess the impact of He clusters. The minimum energy pathway for helium to migration is identified as via O-O interstitial sites with a barrier of 1.39 eV. This work might offer a theoretical foundation for the He damage of the nuclear waste forms.

Abstract:Using the first-principles method based on density functional theory, the effect of helium irradiation on Ti3SiC2 has been investigated. It was observed that helium atoms prefer to accumulate within the layers where Si atoms have been dislodged creating 2-dimensional channels and bubbles which strongly promotes cleavage fractures between adjacent Ti–Si layers. At high temperature the He atoms diffuse out of these bubbles enabling the diffusion of the mobile Si back to their original sites and the annealing of the material back to the original structure. This behavior may play a positive role in the resistance of Ti3SiC2 to helium irradiation making it a potential candidate for future nuclear reactor applications in the future.

Abstract:Understanding helium (He) incorporation into materials is essential to estimate the material performance in a nuclear environment for the fabrication of nuclear devices. The effect of helium irradiation on Zr3Al3C5 was studied by using the first-principles method. It is found that the He interstitial atoms tend to situate in the Al-C layers in Zr3Al3C5. The calculation of defect formation energy shows that the defects at the Zr sites are the most difficult to form, while vacancies at the Al and C sites are more ready to form in Zr3Al3C5. The numbers of He atoms that can be trapped by an Al(2) and a C(3) vacancy are seven and three, respectively, which show that Al vacancies have a stronger ability to trap He atom than C vacancies. The migration of He in Zr3Al3C5 is also investigated. The results indicate that He impurity atoms migrate more easily along the c-axis than in the a-b basal plane in the Al-C layer. The diffusion barrier of He atom from the Al-C into the Zr-C layer is determined to be 3.13 eV. The results imply that the Al-C layers tend to be disordered while the Zr-C layers exhibit good tolerance of damage under He irradiation. Additionally, we also studied the stress-strain relationships of Zr3Al3C5 under tensile and shear loading, with the ideal tensile strength and shear strength of Zr3Al3C5 predicted.

Abstract:Under a severe neutron irradiation environment, helium behaviour has become a significant concern due to helium-induced degradation of mechanical properties in SiC structural materials. Helium prefers to aggregate at grain boundaries (GBs) in SiC ceramics by experimental observations. However, the interaction mechanisms between helium and GBs have remained unclear. By performing first-principles calculations, we studied helium segregation at six symmetric tilt GBs and helium diffusion along and across the GBs. The solution energies of helium at the GBs are much lower than those of helium in grains, indicating preferential helium segregation at the GBs. The negative segregation energies of helium decrease linearly with the excess volume of GBs and the relative charge densities of the interstitial sites, which reveals that helium easily segregates at the GBs having open structures and low charge density interstitial sites. The interstitial helium atoms at GBs are difficult to form clusters due to weak interactions. The diffusion energy barriers of helium along the GBs Σ9(221)[11¯0] and Σ27(552)[11¯0] in the direction of tilt axis [11¯0] are much lower than that of helium in the grains. The two GBs can significantly enhance the helium diffusivity, serving as fast diffusion channels for helium. The calculation results are analysed and compared with our experimental data.

Abstract:The evolution of helium bubbles in a newly developed Fe9Cr1.5W0.4Si alloy that is an important candidate used as fuel claddings in the Lead-cooled fast reactors was in-situ investigated by transmission electron microscopy during 30 keV He+ irradiation at 500 °C and subsequently annealed at 600 °C. Meanwhile, the evolution of dislocation loops was in-situ researched in the initial stage of irradiation. Two mechanisms including the absorption of irradiation defects and the combination of dislocation loops induced the loop growth. Both He+ irradiation and subsequently annealing induced the initiation, migration, aggregation, and growth of helium bubbles, and changed their shape from spherical to preferential faceted. But it was more obvious under the annealing condition. Helium bubbles would preferentially nucleate and grow at dislocation lines and grain boundaries and had large size. The bubble lines formed at dislocation line during helium irradiation, and annealing made them more obvious and larger. A denuded zone with few helium bubbles appeared near grain boundary, but its width decreased with the increase of helium fluence and annealing time. Meanwhile, annealing would lead to the appearance of super large helium bubbles at grain boundaries. The irradiation hardening and swelling were increased with the increase of helium fluence. The corresponding mechanism was analyzed based on in-situ experimental observation.
