Abstract:Extreme weather poses a threat to global crop production, food security and farmer livelihoods. High temperatures have been identified as detrimental to crop yields; however, how heat stress during the critical flowering stage will influence future maize (Zea mays L.) yields remains unclear. Here, we combined statistical and process-based models to assess impacts of short-term extreme heat at flowering on Chinese maize yield under climate change. We showed that heat around flowering has a stronger impact on yields than heat at other times in the growing season, especially for temperatures >30 °C. Heat stress during flowering was responsible for 23% of total yield loss from extreme degree days (EDDs) in 1990–2012. An improved process-based model (APSIM-maize) incorporating a grain-temperature function was then applied and indicated that extreme heat at flowering amplified the impacts of climate change on maize production compared to the original model. The improved APSIM-maize predicted an 8.7% yield reduction across the Chinese Maize Belt as EDDs increased more than quadrupled at the end of the century (2070–2099) under a high emissions pathway (SSP585) in comparison with the baseline period (1990–2019). Our study highlights the importance of extreme heat at flowering on maize yield and can inform farmers and policy makers on adaptive measures as well as providing a reference for other crop areas facing similar challenges.

Abstract:Climate change can decrease the global maize productivity and grain quality. Maize crop requires an optimal temperature for better harvest productivity. A suboptimal temperature at any critical stage for a prolonged duration can negatively affect the growth and yield formation processes. This review discusses the negative impact of temperature extremes (high and low temperatures) on the morpho-physiological, biochemical, and nutritional traits of the maize crop. High temperature stress limits pollen viability and silks receptivity, leading to a significant reduction in seed setting and grain yield. Likewise, severe alterations in growth rate, photosynthesis, dry matter accumulation, cellular membranes, and antioxidant enzyme activities under low temperature collectively limit maize productivity. We also discussed various strategies with practical examples to cope with temperature stresses, including cultural practices, exogenous protectants, breeding climate-smart crops, and molecular genomics approaches. We reviewed that identified quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and genes controlling high- and low temperature stress tolerance in maize could be introgressed into otherwise elite cultivars to develop stress-tolerant cultivars. Genome editing has become a key tool for developing climate-resilient crops. Moreover, challenges to maize crop improvement such as lack of adequate resources for breeding in poor countries, poor communication among the scientists of developing and developed countries, problems in germplasm exchange, and high cost of advanced high-throughput phenotyping systems are discussed. In the end, future perspectives for maize improvement are discussed, which briefly include new breeding technologies such as transgene-free clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated (Cas)-mediated genome editing for thermo-stress tolerance in maize.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing human population is an alarming issue and would need more food production under changing climate. Abiotic stresses like heat stress and temperature fluctuation are becoming key issues to be addressed for boosting crop production. Maize growth and productivity are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Grain yield losses in maize from heat stress are expected to increase owing to higher temperatures during the growing season. This situation demands the development of maize hybrids tolerant to heat and drought stresses without compromising grain yield under stress conditions. The chapter aimed to assess the updates on the influence of high-temperature stress (HTS) on the physio-biochemical processes in plants and to draw an association between yield components and heat stress on maize. Moreover, exogenous applications of protectants, antioxidants, and signaling molecules induce HTS tolerance in maize plants and could help the plants cope with HTS by scavenging reactive oxygen species, upregulation of antioxidant enzymes, and protection of cellular membranes by the accrual of compatible osmolytes. It is expected that a better thought of the physiological basis of HTS tolerance in maize plants will help to develop HTS maize cultivars. Developing HTS-tolerant maize varieties may ensure crops production sustainability along with promoting food and feed security under changing climate.

Abstract:An increase in temperature and extreme heat stress is responsible for the global reduction in maize yield. Heat stress affects the integrity of the plasma membrane functioning of mitochondria and chloroplast, which further results in the over-accumulation of reactive oxygen species. The activation of a signal cascade subsequently induces the transcription of heat shock proteins. The denaturation and accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins generate cell toxicity, leading to death. Therefore, developing maize cultivars with significant heat tolerance is urgently required. Despite the explored molecular mechanism underlying heat stress response in some plant species, the precise genetic engineering of maize is required to develop high heat-tolerant varieties. Several agronomic management practices, such as soil and nutrient management, plantation rate, timing, crop rotation, and irrigation, are beneficial along with the advanced molecular strategies to counter the elevated heat stress experienced by maize. This review summarizes heat stress sensing, induction of signaling cascade, symptoms, heat stress-related genes, the molecular feature of maize response, and approaches used in developing heat-tolerant maize varieties.

Abstract:Extreme heat stress during the crop reproductive period can be critical for crop productivity. Projected changes in the frequency and severity of extreme climatic events are expected to negatively impact crop yields and global food production. This study applies the global crop model PEGASUS to quantify, for the first time at the global scale, impacts of extreme heat stress on maize, spring wheat and soybean yields resulting from 72 climate change scenarios for the 21st century. Our results project maize to face progressively worse impacts under a range of RCPs but spring wheat and soybean to improve globally through to the 2080s due to CO2 fertilization effects, even though parts of the tropic and sub-tropic regions could face substantial yield declines. We find extreme heat stress at anthesis (HSA) by the 2080s (relative to the 1980s) under RCP 8.5, taking into account CO2 fertilization effects, could double global losses of maize yield (ΔY = −12.8 ± 6.7% versus − 7.0 ± 5.3% without HSA), reduce projected gains in spring wheat yield by half (ΔY = 34.3 ± 13.5% versus 72.0 ± 10.9% without HSA) and in soybean yield by a quarter (ΔY = 15.3 ± 26.5% versus 20.4 ± 22.1% without HSA). The range reflects uncertainty due to differences between climate model scenarios; soybean exhibits both positive and negative impacts, maize is generally negative and spring wheat generally positive. Furthermore, when assuming CO2 fertilization effects to be negligible, we observe drastic climate mitigation policy as in RCP 2.6 could avoid more than 80% of the global average yield losses otherwise expected by the 2080s under RCP 8.5. We show large disparities in climate impacts across regions and find extreme heat stress adversely affects major producing regions and lower income countries.

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

Abstract:Climate change is affecting the productivity of crops and their regional distribution. Strategies to enhance local adaptation capacity are needed to mitigate climate change impacts and to maintain regional stability of food production. The objectives of this study were to simulate the climate change effects on phenological stages, Leaf Area Index (LAI), biomass and grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.) in the future and to explore the possibilities of employing irrigation water and planting dates as adaptation strategies to decrease the climate change impacts on maize production in Khorasan Razavi province, Iran. For this purpose, we employed two types of General Circulation Models ((United Kingdom Met. Office Hadley Center: HadCM3) and (Institute Pierre Simon Laplace: IPCM4)) and three scenarios (A1B, A2 and B1). Long Ashton Research Station-Weather Generator (LARS-WG) was used to produce daily climatic parameters as one stochastic growing season for each projection period. Also, crop growth under projected climate conditions was simulated based on the Cropping System Model (CSM)-CERES-Maize. The results of model evaluation showed that LARS-WG had appropriate prediction for climatic parameters. Time period from cultivation until anthesis and maturity were reduced in majority of scenarios as affected by climate change. The results indicated that the grain yield of maize may be reduced (11 % to 38 %) as affected by climate change based on common planting date in baseline and changed (−61 % to 48 %) in response to different irrigation regimes in the future climate change, under all scenarios and times. In general, earlier planting date (1 May) and decreasing irrigation intervals in the anthesis stage (11 applications) caused higher yield compared with other planting dates due to adaption to high temperature. Based on our findings, it seems that management of irrigation water and planting dates can be beneficial for adaptation of maize to climate change in this region.

Abstract:High sensitivity to climate change has been demonstrated in global maize production, especially the extreme high temperature and drought events. At present, the interactive effects of those extreme event stresses on maize growth at the grain filling stage are less well studied. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the compound effects of three stressors (high temperature, drought, and stress duration) at the filling phase on phenological period, grain filling rate, yield component, and yield of summer maize. The precipitation and temperature were controlled by using a rain-shelter systems and a warming system with infrared radiation lamps in field plots. The results indicated the significant influences of high temperature, drought stress, and the interaction on the growth and yield of summer maize. Under the individual factor of drought, compared to normal irrigation (NI), the significant decrease in grain-filling rate for mild drought (LD) and severe drought (SD) were 70.7% and 60.6%, respectively, while the decrease in grain yield for LD and SD were 80.1% and 93.6%, respectively. Under the individual factor of temperature, the consequences on grain-filling rate and grain yield were more severe at high temperature (temperature increase by 4.5 °C) than low temperature (temperature increase by 2.3 °C). The compound of high temperature and drought indicated that the grain yield increase by the compound effects of 3 °C for 5 days under normal irrigation (NIT3D5) and the compound effects of 3 °C for 7 days under mild drought (LDT3D7) were 3.5% and 10.9%, respectively, compared to without temperature stress. The grain yields were reduced by the other compound effects. The preferential temperature (temperature increase by 2.3 °C) promoted maize growth under normal irrigation and mild drought, while high temperature (temperature increase by 4.5 °C) significantly inhibited maize growth under normal irrigation and heavy drought. The warming climate is favorable to maize production within certain limits, and will provide a scientific basis for agricultural disaster prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:SUMMARY The objective of the present paper was to study the impact of climate change on grain yield, water balance, crop water productivity (CWP) and water requirements for the summer-sown maize in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Climate-change scenarios (Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES) A1B, A2 and B1) were derived from the general circulation model ECHAM 5 and the crop model CERES-Maize was used to simulate impacts of the applied climate scenarios. Calibration and validation of the crop models were carried out for the summer-sown maize in 2007 and for the spring-sown maize in 2008. Three predefined reduced irrigation scenarios were compared to traditional irrigation practices for the summer-sown maize. Under the current conditions, scenario S1 (one irrigation event skipped at the vegetative stage) showed a higher simulated yield than scenario S2 (one irrigation event skipped at the grain-filling stage) due to higher water drainage and nitrogen (N) leaching rates in scenario S2. Scenario S3 (irrigation events skipped at both crop establishment and the grain-filling stage) showed significantly higher grain yield because it had the lowest drainage and N leaching rates. In this irrigation scenario, 60 mm of water were saved compared to the other two scenarios, and much more water was saved compared to the traditional local regime. In the predicted climatic scenarios and with reduced irrigation, the simulated maize yields and crop water productivities were affected differently. For the period from 2036 to 2065, a more significant yield decrease was shown in all emission and irrigation scenarios. A yield decrease was simulated by both, including and not including the direct effect of elevated atmospheric CO 2 concentrations on photosynthesis. However, the simulated direct effect of elevated CO 2 was to produce higher yield and CWP in all scenarios. The highest grain yields and crop water productivities were achieved in the reduced irrigation scenario S3 for all emission scenarios and climatic periods for the same reason as under the current conditions (N leaching). However, the yield differences between the climate scenarios were mainly due to the shortening of the simulated growing period. This was caused by increased temperatures compared to current conditions. A shortened growing cycle reduced the potential time for biomass accumulation and in the present case it was not balanced by the CO 2 fertilizing effect (without a potential change in maize cultivars). By simulating optimum yields (where automatic irrigation is determined by the model to receive optimum yield), under the current conditions it was found that 285 mm of irrigation would ensure the highest grain yield and CWP (30 mm more than under irrigation scenario S3). In this case, actual evapotranspiration reached 373 mm and less deep drainage and N leaching occurred. In the future climate scenarios, optimum yields and irrigation demands diminished depending on the emission scenario, but CWP increased slightly. The present simulation study shows a clear decreasing yield trend for autumn maize under a warm climate for each type of (unchanged) irrigation management due to the shortening of the growing period. However, in the current climate, as well as in the future climate scenarios, maize yield levels could be improved by optimized (and reduced) irrigation compared to traditional irrigation due to reduced N leaching. Even in the scenario with the highest warming trend (A1B emission scenario for the period 2036–65), the current yield levels could be kept or even improved.
Impact of Heat Stress on Rainfed Wheat Growth and Yield Under Semi-arid, Semi-humid and Mediterranean Climates in Iran Condition

Abstract:Assessing crop yield in response to heat and drought stress is important in implementing the best adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change. For this aim, observations from 105 agricultural/meteorological experiments in the semi-arid (Maragheh, Qamlou and Sararoud), Mediterranean (Hashem Abad and Oltan) and semi-humid (Gharakhil) regions of Iran were used to investigate the response of the reproductive growing duration (RGD) and grain yield of rainfed winter wheat to certain climatic and agro-climatic indices consisted of precipitation (mm), growing degree days (GDDs), and cumulative extreme temperatures above wheat tolerance threshold level of ≥ 34 °C (TAT). Accordingly, multiple linear regression was applied under baseline (1998–2012) and future increasing temperature (by 1 °C and 2 °C). Results indicated that the average of wheat RGD and yield were 37.2 ± 0.71 d and 2.3 ± 0.05 t ha−1 in semi-arid, 25.7 ± 0.8 d and 2.9 ± 0.11 t ha−1 in semi-humid, and 21.7 ± 0.59 d and 5.25 ± 0.17 t ha−1 in Mediterranean regions, respectively. The main findings showed that, on average during 1998–2012, wheat RGD and yield changed by − 0.26 d yr−1 and − 0.93% (0.02 t ha−1 yr−1) in semi-arid, + 0.25 d yr−1 and − 1.27% (0.04 t ha−1 yr−1) in semi-humid, and − 0.01 d yr−1 and − 0.27% (0.01 t ha−1 yr−1) in Mediterranean regions, respectively. Precipitation and TAT had substantial positive and negative impacts on RGD by + 0.1 d yr−1 and − 0.03 d yr−1, and crop yield by + 0.04% and − 1.14% in all study locations. An increase in GDDs, however, significantly shortened RGD (− 0.06 d yr−1) and consequently reduced grain yield (− 0.04%) in semi-arid regions, while in semi-humid and Mediterranean regions, increasing GDDs had a positive impact on RGD (+ 0.07 d yr−1) and yield (+ 0.19%). Among the indices, TAT showed significantly greater detrimental effects on RGD and grain yield particularly when accompanied by less precipitation (i.e. drought stress). Our results highlighted that any increase in temperatures even by 1 °C or 2 °C would lead to drastic increases in TAT and GDDs in all study regions, most especially in semi-arid regions. Under these conditions, any benefits from precipitation would be neutralized by the negative impacts of increased GDDs and TAT in all study locations. The insights into crop response to weather variations and climate extremes provide excellent evidence and a basis for reducing crop yield damage by designing for improved heat tolerance for the future.

Abstract:Drought and heat, in the context of climate change, are expected to increase in many agricultural areas across the globe. Among current abiotic stresses, they are the most limiting factors that influence crop growth and productivity. Maize is one of most widely produced crops of the world, being the first in grain production with a yield that exceeded 1.1 billion tons in 2021. Despite its wide distribution in semi-arid regions, it is highly vulnerable to climate change, which triggers important losses in its productivity. This article explores how maize yield may persevere through climate change by focusing on the stomatal regulation of gas exchange. The emerging picture unravels that maize copes with drought stress by reducing stomatal size and stomatal pore area, and increasing stomatal density, which, in turn, reduces transpiration and photosynthetic rate. When drought and heat co-occur, heat enhances stomatal response to drought stress. To avoid plant heat damage, the decline in stomatal aperture could trigger the expansion of the distance of action, from the longitudinal leaf veins, of ZmSHR1, which might act to positively regulate ZmSPCHs/ZmICE1 heterodimers, increasing the stomatal density. Only when drought is not very severe, elevated CO2 levels reduce yield losses. The knowledge of the upcoming climate changes together with the prediction of the developmental and physiological stomatal responses will allow not only to anticipate maize yield in the next years, but also to contribute to the correct decision-making in the management of this important crop.

Abstract:Northeast China (NEC), an important maize region located at high northern latitudes, is undergoing pronounced climate warming. This warming highlights the importance of taking the effects of brief extreme high and low temperature events into account when addressing the impacts of climate warming on crop yields. The spatiotemporal variability of heat and cold stress and their impact on yield were determined by combining climate data, maize phenological observations and yield records from 1981 to 2018 for 17 counties in the major maize cropping area of NEC. Spatially, more severe heat stress during the vegetative phase occurred in the western border and cold stress occurred in the central regions. Both stresses during the reproductive phase and growing degree days (GDD) showed a northeast–southwest gradient. Temporally, we found overall increased (0.5 °C•d/yr) heat stress during the vegetative phase, which was predominantly more than five times that during the reproductive phase. The cold stress during the vegetative phase was alleviated by an average of –1.3 °C•d/yr, particularly in the central regions. In contrast, exposure to a cold environment during the reproductive phase was intensified, with an average of 0.3 °C•d/yr, though a few downward trends mainly occurred near the borders of three provinces. The increasing trend in GDDr was 3.6 °C•d/yr, almost twice as high as that in the vegetative phase. The impact of increased heat stress contributed an average yield loss of 0.10 t/ha/10a, while reduced cold stress during the vegetative phase coupled with increased GDD increased yield by 0.42 t/ha/10a. Although cold stress during the reproductive phase had an insignificant impact on yield, its intensity together with the increase in heat stress, especially in the vegetative phase, should be considered when developing appropriate adaptations to increase maize yield in the face of ongoing warming.

Abstract:Abstract Climate change, with increased temperatures and varied rainfall, poses a great challenge to food security around the world. Appropriately assessing the impacts of climate change on crop productivity and understanding the adaptation potential of agriculture to climate change are urgently needed to help develop effective strategies for future agriculture and to maintain food security. In this study, we studied future maize yield changes under 1.5 °C (2018–2037) and 2 °C (2044–2063) warming scenarios and investigated the adaptation potential across China’s Maize Belt by optimizing the sowing date and cultivar using the APSIM-Maize model. In comparison to the baseline scenario, under the 1.5 °C and 2 °C warming scenarios, we found that without adaptation, maize yields would increase in the relatively cool regions with a single-cropping system but decrease in other regions. However, in comparison with the baseline scenario, under the 1.5 °C and 2 °C warming scenarios with adaptation, maize yields would increase by 11.1%–53.9% across the study area. Across the maize belt, compared with the baseline scenario, under warming of 1.5 °C, the potential sowing window would increase by 2–17 d, and under warming of 2 °C, this sowing window would increase by 4–26 d. The optimal sowing window would also be significantly extended in the regions with single-cropping systems by an average of 10 d under the 1.5 °C warming scenario and 12 d under the 2 °C warming scenario. Late-maturing cultivar achieved higher yield than early-middle maturing cultivars in all regions except the north part of Northeast China. Adjusting the sowing date by increasing growth-period precipitation contributed more (44.5%–96.7%) to yield improvements than shifting cultivars (0%–50.8%) and climate change (−53.1% to 23.0%) across all maize planting regions except in the wet southwestern parts of the maize belt. The differences among the maize planting regions in terms of high adaptation potential provide invaluable information for policymakers and stakeholders of maize production to set out optimized agricultural strategies to safeguard the supply of maize.

The Impact of Climate Change on Wheat, Barley, and Maize Growth Indices in Near-Future and Far-Future Periods in Qazvin Plain, Iran

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The current noticeable climate change that has a significant impact on the environment and agricultural systems has become a serious concern for human society. Followed by the industrial activities of the global community and increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, these changes are still considered as a threat to food safety and the environment. Changes in minimum and maximum temperature, rainfall amounts, and precipitation pattern, changes in CO<sub class="a-plus-plus">2</sub> concentrations, and complex interactions between these factors and different crops are studied in the form of different probabilistic scenarios to get a glimpse of the future cultivation situation. Agriculture in Qazvin Plain is based on the water transferred from Taleqan Dam and groundwater. Since today these resources are facing issues like restriction on transfer and draw off, which is because of growth of interest in city dwelling, inappropriate water consumption patterns and over-exploitation, agriculture is sensitive to probable changes in water requirements and it is necessary to predict these changes for better management in the future. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of climate change on growth indices for three crops including wheat, barley, and maize in Qazvin Plain with different possible climate change scenarios, in the form of five large-scale climate models and three greenhouse gas emissions scenarios in 30 years' time from 2021 to 2050 as well as from 2051 to 2080. Results showed that biomass production, grain yield, and water use efficiency in three crops of wheat, barley, and maize have increased up to 20–40% in future periods in Qazvin region climate. Growing degree-days (GDD) of these three crops have increased by 20%. Transpiration has risen by 10% in wheat and maize; however, it was stable on average in the first period and slightly decreased in the second period in barley. The transpiration coefficient has reduced by 5% for wheat and barley and has increased by 15% for maize. Results are valid as long as the initial growing conditions of these three plants are done as before, and the irrigation scheduling is performed according to the present period in spite of climate change.</p>

Abstract:There is concern that food insecurity will increase in southern Africa due to climate change. We quantified the response of maize yield to projected climate change and to three key management options - planting date, fertilizer use and cultivar choice - using the crop simulation model, agricultural production systems simulator (APSIM), at two contrasting sites in Zimbabwe. Three climate periods up to 2100 were selected to cover both near- and long-term climates. Future climate data under two radiative forcing scenarios were generated from five global circulation models. The temperature is projected to increase significantly in Zimbabwe by 2100 with no significant change in mean annual total rainfall. When planting before mid-December with a high fertilizer rate, the simulated average grain yield for all three maize cultivars declined by 13% for the periods 2010-2039 and 2040-2069 and by 20% for 2070-2099 compared with the baseline climate, under low radiative forcing. Larger declines in yield of up to 32% were predicted for 2070-2099 with high radiative forcing. Despite differences in annual rainfall, similar trends in yield changes were observed for the two sites studied, Hwedza and Makoni. The yield response to delay in planting was nonlinear. Fertilizer increased yield significantly under both baseline and future climates. The response of maize to mineral nitrogen decreased with progressing climate change, implying a decrease in the optimal fertilizer rate in the future. Our results suggest that in the near future, improved crop and soil fertility management will remain important for enhanced maize yield. Towards the end of the 21st century, however, none of the farm management options tested in the study can avoid large yield losses in southern Africa due to climate change. There is a need to transform the current cropping systems of southern Africa to offset the negative impacts of climate change.

Abstract:In a warming climate, high temperature stress greatly threatens crop yields. Maize is critical to food security, but frequent extreme heat events coincide temporally and spatially with the period of kernel number determination (e.g., flowering stage), greatly limiting maize yields. In this context, how to increase or at least maintain maize yield has become more important. Nitrogen fertilizer (N) is widely used to improve maize yields, but its effect in heat stress is unclear. For this, we collected 1536 pairs of comparisons from 113 studies concerning N conducted in the past 20 years over China. We classified the data into two groups - without high temperature stress (NHT) and with high temperature stress during the critical period for maize kernel number determination (HT) - based on the national meteorological data. We comprehensively evaluated N effects on grain yield under HT and NHT using meta-analysis. The effect of N on maize yield became significantly smaller in HT than that in NHT. In NHT, soil characteristics, crop management practices, and climatic conditions all significantly affected N effects on maize yield, but in HT, only a few factors such as soil organic matter and mean annual precipitation significantly affected N effects. Hence, it is difficult to improve N effect by improving soil characteristics and crop management when meeting with high temperature stress during flowering. On average, N effect increased with increased N input, but there were respective N input thresholds in NHT and HT, beyond which N effects on maize yield remained stable. According to the thresholds, it is speculated that moderately reducing N input (~20 %) likely increased high temperature tolerance of maize during flowering. These findings have important implications for the optimization of N management under a warming climate.
Aggravation of global maize yield loss risk under various hot and dry scenarios using multiple types of prediction approaches

Abstract:The probabilities of yield loss simultaneously occurring in the top two countries (i.e., United States and China) and top ten countries are unexpectedly high and could even become 100% under extreme hot and dry scenarios. High temperature and drought are widely known to cause a reduction of crop yield, but the simultaneously occurring risks in major producing countries and the associated uncertainty across various climate change scenarios remain unclear at the global scale. Here, we evaluate global maize yield loss risk (i.e., the probability of yield reduction by over 10% relative to historical trend yield during 1981–2010) across 30 hot and dry scenarios using regression, machine learning and process‐based models. Besides examining yield loss risk in a single country, we predict the potential risks simultaneously occurring in the top two and top ten producing countries. The three approaches agree on the aggravation of yield loss risk under dry and hot scenarios, but show large discrepancy in the magnitude and sensitivities. Specifically, 2°C warming alone could lead to a global yield loss risk of 73%, 100% and 62% based on regression, long‐short term memory (LSTM) and process‐based models, respectively, and warming‐induced risks can be further aggravated by droughts especially in process models. Global yield loss by over 10% would even become the new norm (i.e., yield loss probability is 100%) when temperature increases by over 2°C in some models. Importantly, the probabilities of yield loss simultaneously occurring in the top two countries (i.e., United States and China) and top ten countries are unexpectedly high and could even become 100% under extreme hot and dry scenarios. Our results highlight the large risks that future climate change may bring to multiple exporting and importing countries simultaneously, thus threating global food market and security. We also emphasize the important value of using different types of prediction approaches for yield projection under hot and dry scenarios, which enables more realistic estimation of uncertainty range than a single type of model.

Abstract:The impact of climate change on agricultural systems is a major concern as it can have a significant effect on the world food supply. The objective of this study was to evaluate climate change impacts on crop production and nitrate leaching in two distinct climatic zones in Canada. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was selected for the semiarid regions of Western Canada (Swift Current, SK) and maize (Zea mays L.) was chosen for the more humid regions of central Canada (Woodslee, ON). Climate scenarios were based upon simulations from a Canadian Regional Climate Model (CanRCM4) under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) and crop simulations were conducted using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) model. Compared to the baseline climate scenario, wheat yields increased by 8, 8, 11, 15%, whereas maize yields decreased by 15, 25, 22, 41% under RCP4.5 2050s (2041-2070), RCP4.5 2080s (2071-2100), RCP8.5 2050s and RCP8.5 2080s scenarios, respectively. Annual nitrate leaching increased by 19, 57, 73, 129% at Swift Current and by 84, 117, 208, 317% at Woodslee under the four scenarios, respectively. Adaptation measures suggested that fertilizer N rate for spring wheat should be increased to 80-100 kg N ha-1 to obtain optimal yields although this will result in an additional risk of 5-8 kg N ha-1 nitrate leaching at Swift Current. The fertilizer N rate of 150 kg N ha-1 was found to be suitable for high maize yields at Woodslee. New wheat and maize cultivars with long growing seasons would enable crop growth to match the phenological stage and hence maintain high crop yields to adapt to increased temperatures in the future.

Abstract:Rising air temperatures are a leading risk to global crop production. Recent research has emphasized the critical role of moisture availability in regulating crop responses to heat and the importance of temperature–moisture couplings in driving concurrent heat and drought. Here, we demonstrate that the heat sensitivity of key global crops depends on the local strength of couplings between temperature and moisture in the climate system. Over 1970–2013, maize and soy yields dropped more during hotter growing seasons in places where decreased precipitation and evapotranspiration more strongly accompanied higher temperatures, suggestive of compound heat–drought impacts on crops. On the basis of this historical pattern and a suite of climate model projections, we show that changes in temperature–moisture couplings in response to warming could enhance the heat sensitivity of these crops as temperatures rise, worsening the impact of warming by −5% (−17 to 11% across climate models) on global average. However, these changes will benefit crops where couplings weaken, including much of Asia, and projected impacts are highly uncertain in some regions. Our results demonstrate that climate change will impact crops not only through warming but also through changing drivers of compound heat–moisture stresses, which may alter the sensitivity of crop yields to heat as warming proceeds. Robust adaptation of cropping systems will need to consider this underappreciated risk to food production from climate change. The combination of hot and dry conditions reduces crop yields through heat and drought stresses. The heat sensitivity of crops depends on the local strength of couplings between temperature and moisture, but how future climate will impact the temperature–moisture couplings remains unknown. On the basis of historical patterns and a suite of climate models, this study projects that climate change will modify the couplings and probably worsen the impacts of warming on some of the world's most important crops.
