Abstract:Bacteria are widespread in the environment, and antibiotics are usually used in large doses to kill the bacteria, which consequently leads to the appearance of drug-resistance bacteria. As a result, the development of new and non-antibiotic antibacterial material is in urgent need. Herein, the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet, which shows photocatalytic and photothermal properties, was modified with N-doping carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The CQDs could transport the photogenerated electrons produced by MoS2 nanosheets, preventing the recombination of electrons and holes, resulting in a much higher photocatalytic property. Because of the enhanced photocatalytic properties, these MoS2/CQDs hybrids could kill bacteria highly effectively, with antibacterial ratios of 99.38 and 99.99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively. Meanwhile, the hybrids exhibit good biocompatibility, which can prevent the potential side effect to both human and environment. Furthermore, through a simple spin-coating method, the MoS2/CQDs hybrids could also form a coating on the basement, e.g., Ti, and act as an antibacterial coating to prevent bacterial infection.
Superhydrophobic cellulose paper with sustained antibacterial activity prepared by in-situ growth of carvacrol-loaded zinc-based metal organic framework nanorods for food packaging application

Abstract:Cellulose paper packaging materials have gained considerable attention as substitutes for petroleum-based plastics owing to their biodegradability, renewability, flexibility, and good mechanical strength. However, high hydrophilicity and the absence of essential antibacterial activity limit their application in food packaging. In this study, a facile and energy-saving method was developed to improve the hydrophobicity of cellulose paper and endow it with a long-acting antibacterial effect by integrating cellulose paper substrate with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). A dense and homogenous coating of regular hexagonal ZnMOF-74 nanorods was in-situ formed on a paper surface by layer-by-layer assembly followed by low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification to prepare a superhydrophobic (ZnMOF-74) 5 @paper. Excellent anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and antibacterial adhesion performances were obtained for this superhydrophobic paper. In addition, active carvacrol was loaded into the pores of ZnMOF-74 nanorods on (ZnMOF-74) 5 @paper to combine antibacterial adhesion together with bactericidal ability, ultimately resulting in a completely "bacteria-free" surface and sustained antibacterial performance. The resultant superhydrophobic papers not only showed overall migration values within the limit of 10 mg/dm 2 but also good stability against various harsh mechanical, environmental, and chemical treatments. This work gave insights into the potential of in-situ -developed MOFs-dopped coating as a functionally modified platform for preparing active superhydrophobic paper-based packaging.

Abstract:Facing the increasing electromagnetic interference (EMI) pollution in the living environment, it is a new trend to explore an efficient EMI shielding material with facile fabrication and a wide range of application scenarios. A hydrophobic composite paper composed of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and kapok microfibers cellulose (MFC) was modified by methyl trimethoxy silane (MTMS) through a simple method. As a result, the composite paper has a good EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 61.7 dB with electrical conductivity of 695.41 S/cm. The modification of MTMS improved the thermal stability performance of composite paper, which also increased its water contact angle to 113°. The free silver ions (Ag+) released from AgNWs can kill surrounding microbial bacteria, endowing the composite paper with good antibacterial property. Water resistance and antibacterial property enable MTMS/AgNWs/MFC composite paper to cope with complex application environments.

Abstract:Innovative antibacterial therapies using nanomaterials, such as photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) treatments, have been developed for treating wound infections. However, creating secure wound dressings with these therapies faces challenges. The primary focus of this study is to prepare an antibacterial nanofiber dressing that effectively incorporates stable loads of functional nanoparticles and demonstrates an efficient synergistic effect between PTT and PDT. Herein, a composite nanofiber mat was fabricated, integrating spherical molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoparticles. MoS2 was deposited onto polylactic acid (PLA) nanofiber mats using vacuum filtration, which was further stabilized by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) adhesion and glutaraldehyde (GA) cross-linking. The composite nanofibers demonstrated synergistic antibacterial effects under NIR light irradiation, and the underlying mechanism was explored. They induce bacterial membrane permeability, protein leakage, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) elevation, ultimately leading to >95 % antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), which is higher than that of single thermotherapy (almost no antibacterial activity) or ROS therapy (about 80 %). In addition, the composite nanofiber mats exhibited promotion effects on infected wound healing in vivo. This study demonstrates the great prospects of composite nanofiber dressings in clinical treatment of bacterial-infected wounds.
Antibacterial hybrid materials fabricated by nanocoating of microfibril bundles of cellulose substance with titania/chitosan/silver-nanoparticle composite films

Abstract:Uniform ultrathin titania/chitosan composite films were coated on the cellulose microfibril bundles of natural cellulose substance (common commercial filter paper) by a layer-by-layer self-assembly process. Relying on the strong chelating ability of chitosan for metal ions, silver ions were abundantly adsorbed on the titania/chitosan composite film coated cellulose substance and were thereafter in situ reduced to silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) under UV irradiation. As such, hybrid cellulose/titania/chitosan/Ag-NP composite materials were obtained, which feature the same hierarchically fibrous structure as the initial cellulose substance. Meanwhile, the hybrid fibres in the composite materials exhibit a cable-like core-shell structure, displaying a cellulose microfibril bundle core as well as a nanometer-thick titania/chitosan/Ag-NP composite film shell with Ag-NPs (4-20 nm in diameter) well distributed. The antibacterial activities of the titania/chitosan/Ag-NP composite film coated cellulose materials were evaluated against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and the materials as such disinfected almost all the inoculated bacteria due to the intrinsic biocidal effect of titania composition, positively charged chitosan component and high loading content of Ag-NPs with small sizes, showing excellent antibacterial activities.

Abstract:Traditional textiles are conductive to breed germs that might cause infection or unpleasant odor, especially in public hygiene products. Moreover, biosafety, environmental protection and cost are crucial considerations for antimicrobial materials. Herein, we developed a biocompatible microcapsules/nanofibrous membrane using eco-friendly and facile strategy. The microcapsules loaded with the Epigallocatechin and gallate (EGCG) were synthesized through an ion-crosslinking reaction between chitosan (CS) and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). Additionally, the addition of octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC) could further enhance the antibacterial activity. Following that, the microcapsules were combined with the polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers. The resultant composite nanofibrous membrane exhibits a slow release effect, an enjoyable deodorant activity, and strengthened antibacterial activity through contact-killing and biocide-releasing. Besides, the membrane behaved a low degradation rate, without compromising its mechanical and hydrophilic properties after a 20-day degradation. These findings provided a biocompatible and practical approach for antimicrobial and odor-proof material for hygienic and sanitary products.

Abstract:Bacterial infections have evolved as a life-threatening problem afflicting people due to the abuse of antibiotics and emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Thus developing novel antibacterial materials is an urgent need. Herein, chitosan-MoS2 (CS-MoS2) nanocomposite was synthesized through thiol ligand functionalization and chemical modification to achieve more efficient bactericidal activity. CS-MoS2 exhibited synergistic remarkable bactericidal capability against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E.coli), where bacterial viabilities were significantly reduced. After treatment with 10 μg/mL of CS-MoS2, 100% and 98.1% of S. aureus and E.coli cells were killed respectively. A mechanism study revealed that the positively charged CS-MoS2 could interact with cell membrane, then cause damage to the membrane and cellular constituents by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH) oxidation, finally inhibit bacterial growth. The CS-MoS2 could be an attractive antibacterial agent with improved efficiency and provide more strategies for application of MoS2.
Peroxidase-like MoS2/Ag nanosheets with synergistically enhanced NIR-responsive antibacterial activities

Abstract:Pathogenic microbial infections have been threatening public health all over the world, which makes it highly desirable to develop an antibiotics-free material for bacterial infection. In this paper, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were constructed to inactive bacteria rapidly and efficiently in a short period under a near infrared (NIR) laser (660 nm) in the presence of H2O2. The designed material presented favorable features of peroxidase-like ability and photodynamic property, which endowed it with fascinating antimicrobial capacity. Compared with free MoS2 nanosheets, the MoS2/Ag nanosheets (denoted as MoS2/Ag NSs) exhibited better antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus by the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) from both peroxidase-like catalysis and photodynamic, and the antibacterial efficiency of MoS2/Ag NSs could be further improved by increasing the amount of Ag. Results from cell culture tests proved that MoS2/Ag3 nanosheets had a negligible impact on cell growth. This work provided new insight into a promising method for eliminating bacteria without using antibiotics, and could serve as a candidate strategy for efficient disinfection to treat other bacterial infections.
Chitosan/tannic acid bilayers layer-by-layer deposited cellulose nanofibrous mats for antibacterial application

Abstract:The research and development of environmentally friendly and nontoxic biomass products has become an important topic of worldwide concern. In this study, natural materials were used for producing a kind of antibacterial mats. Cellulose acetate (CA) mats prepared by electrospinning technology were converted to cellulose mats via alkali hydrolysis. Chitosan (CS) and tannic acid (TA) were used to fabricate the composite mats by using layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technology. The cellulose mats exhibited good fibrous structure, three-dimensional network and small average fiber diameter ranging from 300 to 400 nm. Besides, the results of mechanical properties testing and water contact angle measurements of these LBL-structured mats demonstrated that the LBL technology was able to improve their surface characteristics, hydrophilicity and mechanical properties. The analysis of antibacterial activity of the mats revealed over 86% antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and up to 99% antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Hence, the LBL-structured cellulose mats have excellent antibacterial activity and mechanical properties. Therefore, these nano-cellulose mats can be expected to have considerable development prospects for food packaging or wound dressing.

Abstract:Cellulose fiber-based food packaging papers with enhanced barrier and antibacterial properties were successfully fabricated by sequential deposition multilayers consisting of chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on paper surface. The formation of CS/CMC multilayers on paper surface was systematically characterized. The CS/CMC multilayers effectively improved not only the barrier properties of papers against grease, oil, water, air and water vapor, but also the mechanical properties of papers. Moreover, the CS/CMC multilayer-modified papers showed improved antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus. A (CS/CMC)5 multilayer-modified paper exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity with growth inhibition rate of 95.8% against E. coli and 98.9% against S. aureus. No obvious cytotoxicity was detected for the obtained modified paper. Therefore, in consideration of its mechanical, barrier, antibacterial and safe performances, it is expected that the as-prepared cellulose fiber-based paper can be used as a promising material for food packaging.

Abstract:This work demonstrated a facile and sustainable approach to functionalize cellulose nanopaper (CNP) by impregnation of chitosan (CS) and the followed halogenation. It was found that the tensile strength of the functionalized CNP (CNP/CS-Cl) was enhanced by 38.3% and 512.6% at dry and wet conditions, respectively. Meanwhile, the total transmittance (at 550 nm) of CNP/CS-Cl was increased from 75% of pure CNP to 85%, with 35% decrease in optical haze. Moreover, the CNP/CS-Cl exhibited significant enhancement in barrier properties. Importantly, part of the amino groups on CS were transformed into N-halamines during the halogenation process, which endowed the CNP/CS-Cl with excellent antibacterial performance against both S. aureus and E. coli with 100% bacterial reduction after 10 min of contact. Thus, this work provides a simple and efficient approach to functionalize CNP with water resistance, high transparency, excellent antibacterial and barrier properties, which will expand the potential applications of CNP.

Abstract:In medical, healthcare, and packaging industries, antibacterial textiles are widely used. However, contamination of textiles with bacteria can result in exclusive cross-infection. To address this issue, we devised an engineering strategy for creating organic–inorganic hybrid layers on the surface of fiber materials by combining MXene quantum dots (MQDs) with highly efficient antimicrobial agents, endowing the textiles with dual functions of bacterial killing and monitoring. Surface-functionalized MQDs were anchored on the surface of cellulose nonwovens (CNWs) by hydrogen bonding (MQDs@CNWs), followed by immobilization of Ni2+ ions by metal affinity coordination (Ni@MQDs@CNWs). In the last step, the antimicrobial compounds with catechol moieties were coordinated with Ni2+ to produce the modified textile named as NCA@Ni@MQDs@CNWs. Fluorescence (FL) recovery experiments demonstrated that NCA@Ni@MQDs@CNWs had differential FL recovery ability after exposure to pathogens with different concentrations indicating its ability for bacteria monitoring. Moreover, NCA@Ni@MQDs@CNWs exhibited excellent bactericidal efficiencies of >99.99% against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in a 30-min. This work presents a novel approach for design and fabrication of biocidal textiles with ability of sensing bacteria.

Abstract:Bacterial infection is one of the most frequent wound complications and has become a major public health concern. Increasing resistance to antibiotics has been noted with these agents broadly used in wound management. It is an urgent demand to develop alternative antibacterial strategies with a reduced chance of resistance. Herein, a Nepenthes‐mimicking nanosheet array of MoS2 on carbon fibers (CF‐MoS2) has been proposed to achieve dual bactericidal activities. First, the sharp edges of synthesized surfaces are capable of inducing physical disruption of cell membranes, demonstrating mechanical antibacterial activity like their natural counterparts. Second, in the presence of near‐infrared light, bioinspired CF‐MoS2 nanosheets are able to cause the death of damaged bacteria owing to their inherent photothermal properties. Such dual‐functional modes endow the surfaces with nearly 100% killing efficiency for highly concentrated Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Furthermore, their potential to be applied as wound dressings for photothermal treatment of infectious wound is also investigated in vivo. Bioinspired CF‐MoS2 dressings show advantages of synergistic disinfection and efficient promotion of wound regeneration. It is foreseen that this high‐performance and multifunctional CF‐MoS2 could afford a feasible broad‐spectrum treatment for non‐antibiotic disinfection. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Cellulose-based paper is widely used in cultural communication, art appreciation, and cultural relic protection, but is susceptible to fire and mildew. Traditional protective materials have negative impacts on the appearance, flexibility, and writability of paper, resulting in severely limited applications. Herein, we demonstrate a quick and effective approach for enhancing the flame retardancy, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of cellulose papers by assembling polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) and sodium polyphosphate (PSP). By exploiting hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, PHMB and PSP can assemble into micro-nano protuberances that are deposited on the surface of the paper through a 30 s dip-treating technology. The PHMB/PSP layers promote the formation of char layer when exposed to flame, providing the paper with self-extinguishing property with a limiting oxygen index value of 34.5 % and an 84.0 % reduction in peak heat release rate. Meanwhile, the treated papers exhibit excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus (>99.99 %) and appreciable fungal resistance against T. viride (Grade 1). Importantly, the treatment does not alter the appearance, mechanical stability, and writability of the paper. Owing to the mild conditions and fast processability, this study promotes the wide development of advanced high-performance cellulose paper with combined fire-safety, antibacterial, and antifungal properties for diverse applications.

Abstract:Cellulose paper has been functionalized by nanoparticles such as Ag nanoparticles, TiO2, and BaTiO3 for versatile applications including supercapacitor, sensors, photoactivity, and packaging. Herein, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheet-modified paper (ZnO@paper) with excellent antibacterial properties was fabricated via a mild ZnCl2-urea eutectic solvent. In this proposed method, cellulose fibers as the raw material for ZnO@paper were treated by an aqueous solvent of ZnCl2-urea; the crystalline region was destroyed and [ZnCl]+-based cations were adsorbed on the surface of cellulose fibers, facilitating more ZnO growth on ZnO@paper. A flexible paper-based triboelectric nanogenerator (P-TENG) was made of ZnO@paper paired with a PTFE film. The P-TENG presents high triboelectric output performance and antibacterial activity. For instance, the output voltage and current of the P-TENG were 77 V and 0.17 μA, respectively. ZnO@paper showed excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, suggesting that a P-TENG can restrain and kill the bacteria during the working process. The results also indicated that ZnO could improve the surface roughness of cellulose paper, enhancing the output performance of a flexible P-TENG. In addition, the potential application of a P-TENG-based pressure sensor for determining human motion information was also reported. This study not only produced a high-performance P-TENG for fabricating green and sustainable electronics, but also provides an effective and novel method for ZnO@paper preparation.

Cellulose-citric acid-chitosan@metal sulfide nanocomposites: Methyl orange dye removal and antibacterial activity

Abstract:In this study, to develop efficient adsorbents in removing water pollution, new cellulose-citric acid-chitosan@metal sulfide nanocomposites (CL-CA-CS@NiS and CL-CA-CS@CuS) were synthesized by one-pot reaction at mild conditions and characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm. The results of characterization techniques confirm that the desired compounds have been successfully synthesized. The as-prepared composites were applied for the removal of methyl orange (MO) dye from aqueous solutions using a batch technique, and the effect of key factors such as initial pH, shaking time, MO concentration, temperature and adsorbent dose were investigated and discussed. Adsorption results exhibited positive impact of temperature, shaking time and adsorbent dose on the MO removal percent. The MO removal percent has been increased over a wide range of pH from 2 (27.6 %) to 6 (98.8 %). Also, almost being constant over a wide range of MO concentration (10-70 mg/L). The results demonstrated that the maximum removal percentage of MO dye (98.9 % and 93.4 % using CL-CA-CS@NiS and CL-CA-CS@CuS, respectively) was achieved under the conditions of pH 6, shaking time of 120 min, adsorbent dose of 0.02 g, MO concentration of 70 mg/L and temperature of 35 °C. The pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Langmuir models demonstrated the best fit to the kinetic and equilibrium data. Also, the thermodynamic results showed that the MO removal process is endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The MO adsorption can be happened by different electrostatic attraction, n-π and π-π stacking and also hydrogen bonding interaction. In addition, antibacterial activity of CL-CA-CS@NiS and CL-CA-CS@CuS nanocomposites exhibited a superior efficiency against S. aureus.
Preparation and Characterization of Degradable Cellulose−Based Paper with Superhydrophobic, Antibacterial, and Barrier Properties for Food Packaging

Abstract:A great paradigm for foremost food packaging is to use renewable and biodegradable lignocellulose−based materials instead of plastic. Novel packages were successfully prepared from the cellulose paper by coating a mixture of polylactic acid (PLA) with cinnamaldehyde (CIN) as a barrier screen and nano silica−modified stearic acid (SA/SiO2) as a superhydrophobic layer. As comprehensively investigated by various tests, results showed that the as−prepared packages possessed excellent thermal stability attributed to inorganic SiO2 incorporation. The excellent film−forming characteristics of PLA improved the tensile strength of the manufactured papers (104.3 MPa) as compared to the original cellulose papers (70.50 MPa), enhanced by 47.94%. Benefiting from the rough nanostructure which was surface−modified by low surface energy SA, the contact angle of the composite papers attained 156.3°, owning superhydrophobic performance for various liquids. Moreover, the composite papers showed excellent gas, moisture, and oil bacteria barrier property as a result of the reinforcement by the functional coatings. The Cobb300s and WVP of the composite papers were reduced by 100% and 88.56%, respectively, and their antibacterial efficiency was about 100%. As the novel composite papers have remarkable thermal stability, tensile strength, and barrier property, they can be exploited as a potential candidate for eco−friendly, renewable, and biodegradable cellulose paper−based composites for the substitute of petroleum−derived packages.

Abstract:The industrial wastewater contaminants including dyes and bacteria have caused serious environmental pollutions. Herein, ternary Ag/Ag2O/ZnO heterostructure decorating cellulose-chitosan films were constructed via in situ synthesis. Cellulose and chitosan dissolved in alkali/urea solvent and regenerated in ethylene glycol to form cellulose/chitosan nanofiber network, which was an ideal supporter for ZnO and Ag nanoparticles and beneficial for recycle usage. The hydroxyl groups of cellulose and chitosan chains exposed and were utilized for the synthesis of Ag particles, as well as ZnO nanoparticles by biomineralization. The Ag/Ag2O/ZnO decorating cellulose/chitosan (AZ@CC) films exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The width of inhibition zones around AZ@CC films reached 10.0-19.6 mm and 12.4-15.0 mm for S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Moreover, AZ@CC films exhibited good photocatalytic activity against methyl orange (MO), almost 97% degradation of methyl orange (MO) within 50 min was achieved with the assistance of AZ@CC film. Importantly, the nanocomposite films exhibited excellent tensile strength and thermal stability. This facile and eco-friendly approach provided a new route to utilize cellulose and chitosan advantages for constructing multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Chitosan/TiO 2 functionalized polypropylene (CS/TiO 2 /PP) nonwoven fabrics were fabricated through crosslinking of chitosan with glutaraldehyde followed by loading of TiO 2 nanoparticles. The functionalized CS/TiO 2 /PP has super hydrophilicity and excellent visible light induced photocatalytic antibacterial properties owing to the synergistic effects of CS and TiO 2 . The photocatalytic degradation performance was determined by assessing the degradation of methyl blue under simulated visible light irradiation and its recyclability was also evaluated. In addition, SEM images demonstrated that TiO 2 nanoparticles were distributed evenly on the surface of the 2 g/L CS/TiO 2 /PP. Meanwhile, the polypropylene surface showed a significant increase in hydrophilicity after being treated with chitosan and TiO 2 . The photocatalytic degradation results revealed that CS/TiO 2 /PP had higher photocatalytic properties than those of pure PP under visible light, and the degradation rate of methylene blue reached 96.4 % after 90 min of light exposure. Compared to pure PP, the antibacterial properties of CS/TiO 2 /PP significantly increased, and the bacterial reduction percentages were increased to 98.7 % and 96.3 %, against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. The functionalized CS/TiO 2 /PP composites exhibited promising potential in environmentally friendly antibacterial materials.
