Abstract:The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident led to the release of large amounts of radionuclides into the atmosphere as well as direct discharges into the sea. In contrast to the intensive studies on the distribution of the released high volatility fission products, such as 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs, similar studies of the actinides, especially the Pu isotopes, are limited. To obtain the vertical distribution of Pu isotopes in marine sediments and to better assess the possible contamination of Pu from the FDNPP accident in the marine environment, we determined the activities of 239+240Pu and 241Pu as well as the atom ratios of 240Pu/239Pu and 241Pu/239Pu in sediment core samples collected in the western North Pacific off Fukushima from July 2011 to July 2012. We also measured surface sediment samples collected from seven Japanese estuaries before the FNDPP accident to establish the comprehensive background baseline data. The observed results of both the Pu activities and the Pu atom ratios for the sediments in the western North Pacific were comparable to the baseline data, suggesting that the FDNPP accident did not cause detectable Pu contamination to the studied regions prior to the sampling time. The Pu isotopes in the western North Pacific 30 km off the Fukushima coast originated from global fallout and Pacific Proving Ground close-in fallout.

Abstract:On March 11 , 2011 , a catastrophic tsunami induced by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake caused the terrible Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) acci‐dent ,leading to the release of a large amount of radionuclides into the environment .T he published studies on plutonium isotopes in the environment after the FDNPP accident were reviewed in this paper .The total atmospheric released amounts of Pu from the FDNPP accident were estimated to be 109 Bq ,that is only 1/10 000 of that released from the Chernobyl accident .The Pu isotopes were released from the damaged reactors ,not from the spent fuel pools in the FDNPP .The Pu isotopic ratios (240 Pu/239 Pu ,241 Pu/239 Pu) and activity ratios of A(238 Pu)/A(239+ 240 Pu) were significantly different from that of global fallout ,serving as powerful fingerprints for Pu source identification .To date , the plutonium isotopes from the accident in the terrestrial environment within the 30 km zone around the FDNPP site have been widely observed and there are no strong positive correlations between the Pu isotopes contamination levels and the distances from the FDNPP site .The influence of the FDNPP accident on Pu distributions in the marine environment is limited .No detectable Pu contamination from the accident is observed even in the near coastal (5 km off the FDNPP site) marine sediments .

Abstract:Atmospheric deposition of Pu isotopes from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident has been observed in the terrestrial environment around the FDNPP site; however, their deposition in the marine environment has not been studied. The possible contamination of Pu in the marine environment has attracted great scientific and public concern. To fully understand this possible contamination of Pu isotopes from the FDNPP accident to the marine environment, we collected marine sediment core samples within the 30 km zone around the FDNPP site in the western North Pacific about two years after the accident. Pu isotopes ((239)Pu, (240)Pu, and (241)Pu) and radiocesium isotopes ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) in the samples were determined. The high activities of radiocesium and the (134)Cs/(137)Cs activity ratios with values around 1 (decay corrected to 15 March 2011) suggested that these samples were contaminated by the FDNPP accident-released radionuclides. However, the activities of (239+240)Pu and (241)Pu were low compared with the background level before the FDNPP accident. The Pu atom ratios ((240)Pu/(239)Pu and (241)Pu/(239)Pu) suggested that global fallout and the pacific proving ground (PPG) close-in fallout are the main sources for Pu contamination in the marine sediments. As Pu isotopes are particle-reactive and they can be easily incorporated with the marine sediments, we concluded that the release of Pu isotopes from the FDNPP accident to the marine environment was negligible.

Abstract:Six years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, data for 236U and 236U/238U have remained limited to a few heavily contaminated samples. In the present study, activities of 236U, 239Pu, and 240Pu, along with other U isotopes in 46 soil samples both heavily and lightly contaminated by this accident were measured by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and triple-quadrupole ICP-MS. The 236U activities and 236U/238U atom ratios in these soil samples were in the range of (0.469–24.4) × 10−5 Bq kg−1 and ((0.099–1.35) × 10−7), respectively. Higher 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (0.245–0.312) and 238Pu/239+240Pu activity ratios (0.859–1.62) indicated Pu contamination originated from this accident and global fallout in some samples. For those soil samples along with black substances collected along roads in Fukushima Prefecture, high linear correlations were presented between 236U activities and 239+240Pu activities (Pearson’s r = 0.755, p < 0.01), and between 236U activities and 238Pu activities (Pearson’s r = 0.844, p < 0.01). The analysis of these soil samples confirmed the release of 236U, although in trace amounts, during the FDNPP accident.

Distributions of Pu isotopes in seawater and bottom sediments in the coast of the Japanese archipelago before and soon after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station accident

Abstract:A radioactivity measurement survey was carried out from 24 April 2008 to 3 June 2011 to determine the levels of plutonium isotopes and (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios in the marine environments off the sites of commercial nuclear power stations around the Japanese islands; the sampling period extended to two months after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station accident. In our previous study (Oikawa et al., 2015), data on Pu isotopes and (241)Am in sediments have already been reported. In this study, we report those on Pu isotopes in seawater as well as sediments, and the characteristics of sediments in addition (e.g., ignition loss and biogenic opals). Concentrations of (239+240)Pu in seawater and bottom sediments remained nearly constant at all sampling locations during the survey period. In addition, no regional differences were observed in the (239+240)Pu concentrations in surface waters. Higher (239+240)Pu concentrations were found in bottom waters at deeper sampling locations, but the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios were nearly constant regardless of the water depth. Higher (239+240)Pu concentrations were also found in bottom sediments at deeper sampling locations, but vice versa for (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios as reported in the previous report. The sediments samples from deeper locations showed the higher percentage of ignition loss as well as the higher content of biogenic opal. There was likely to be some driving force participating in the transfer of Pu isotopes associated with biogenic substances to the deeper seabed. The present survey showed that the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station did not contribute much to the inventory of Pu isotopes in the adjacent sea area.

Abstract:The actinide plutonium (Pu) isotopes and the fission product radiocesium isotopes released in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) nuclear accident have drawn scientific attention in post-accident studies. In this chapter, studies that trace the Pu and radiocesium isotopes released from the FDNPP accident into the environment to ensure better nuclear emergency preparedness for the future were summarized. The characteristic Pu-240/Pu-239, Pu-241/Pu-239, and Cs-135/Cs-137 atom ratios of the FDNPP accident were determined to be 0.323-0.330, 0.128-0.135, and 0.333-0.343, respectively, which were distinct from those of global fallout. While Pu and radiocesium isotopic signatures from the accident were detected in the terrestrial environment, the release of Pu to the marine environment, if any, was negligible. And no data for Cs-135 in the marine environment has been reported yet.

Abstract:Concentrations of the radionuclides, U, Pu, and Cs were measured in water samples (10-20 L) to study analyte dispersion and migration following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. A total of 8 water samples including oceanic water and paddy-field water were collected in the vicinity of the plant. Determinations of U, Pu and Cs isotopes were performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and γ-ray spectrometry. The 236U/238U atom ratio was in the range 1.83-8.20 × 10-9 for fresh water and around 0.57 × 10-9 for seawater while the concentration of 236U was about 104-105 and 106 atoms/kg, respectively. Plutonium (239,240Pu) was detected in one riverine sample and the marine samples at very low levels and with large uncertainty. The concentrations of 137Cs in fresh riverine samples were 0.02-0.46 Bq/kg which are more than three orders of magnitude larger than the global fallout level. As for seawater samples within 80 km offshore of the FDNPP, the concentrations of 137Cs were 10-20 times higher than that of the Japan Sea water. Also 134Cs and 137Cs were of similar concentrations in all samples. The results show that volatile and refractory nuclides such as Cs, U and Pu exist in the dissolved phase, which can be readily assimilated by plants/humans. However the environmental impact of Pu and U in the vicinity of the FDNPP is considered to be low in comparison to that of the volatile radionuclide Cs.

Abstract:To understand the possible influence of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident on the deep sea, as well as the geochemical behavior and transport of radionuclides, 134Cs, 137Cs, 239, 240Pu, 241Pu, and 237Np were measured in the abyssal sediments of the Northwest Pacific (NWP) and Central Equatorial Pacific (CEP) Ocean. Data on the characteristics of these sediments obtained after the FDNPP accident are extremely rare, especially in the NWP subtropical gyre (NPSG) region. FDNPP-derived radio-Cs (134Cs, 137Cs) arrived at the open sea floor of the NWP before 2018 but was only found in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension (KOE) region. No FDNPP-derived Pu was detected in the abyssal sediments of the NWP or CEP. Pu in the NWP mainly originated from global fallout and the Pacific Proving Ground (PPG) close-in fallout, except for at station WP1 (39°N in the KOE region), where an abnormal but non-FDNPP-derived Pu signal was detected. Pu in the eastern CEP sediment was less affected by the PPG close-in fallout from the Marshall Islands and was mainly derived from global fallout, with some close-in fallout from the Johnston Atoll test. The KOE region was the area most affected by PPG close-in fallout Pu via Kuroshio transport, while the lowest inventories of 239+240Pu and 237Np were found in the NPSG region due to its oligotrophic environment. The 237Np originated from the same source as Pu, and the latitudinal pattern of 237Np was consistent with that of Pu. Station SS (in the marginal sea of the NWP) contained high 237Np/239Pu atom ratios in the deeper layers of sediment and had a 237Np depth profile opposite that of the 239+240Pu profile, compared to other stations; these differences are mainly attributed to differences in the behaviors of 237Np and 239Pu.

Abstract:AbstractRadioactive particles were released into the environment during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. Many studies have been conducted to elucidate the chemical composition of released radioactive particles in order to understand their formation process. However, whether radioactive particles contain nuclear fuel radionuclides remains to be investigated. Here, we report the first determination of Pu isotopes in radioactive particles. To determine the Pu isotopes (239Pu, 240Pu and 241Pu) in radioactive particles derived from the FDNPP accident which were free from the influence of global fallout, radiochemical analysis and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry measurements were conducted. Radioactive particles derived from unit 1 and unit 2 or 3 were analyzed. For the radioactive particles derived from unit 1, activities of 239+240Pu and 241Pu were (1.70–7.06) × 10−5 Bq and (4.10–8.10) × 10−3 Bq, respectively and atom ratios of 240Pu/239Pu and 241Pu/239Pu were 0.330–0.415 and 0.162–0.178, respectively. These ratios were consistent with the simulation results from ORIGEN code and measurements from various environmental samples. In contrast, Pu was not detected in the radioactive particles derived from unit 2 or 3. The difference in Pu contents is clear evidence towards different formation processes of radioactive particles, and detailed formation processes can be investigated from Pu analysis.

Abstract:The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident released considerable radionuclides into the environment. Radioactive particles, composed mainly of SiO2, emerged as distinctive features, revealing insights into the accident's dynamics. While studies extensively focused on high-volatile radionuclides like Cs, investigations into low-volatile nuclides such as 90Sr and Pu remain limited. Understanding their abundance in radioactive particles is crucial for deciphering the accident's details, including reactor temperatures and injection processes. Here, we aimed to determine 90Sr and Pu amounts in radioactive particles and provide essential data for understanding the formation processes and conditions within the reactor during the accident. We employed radiochemical analysis on nine radioactive particles and determined the amounts of 90Sr and Pu in these particles. 90Sr and Pu quantification in radioactive particles showed that the 90Sr/137Cs radioactivity ratio (corrected to March 11, 2011) aligned with core temperature expectations. However, the 239+240Pu/137Cs activity ratio indicated nonvolatile Pu introduction, possibly through fuel fragments. Analyzing 90Sr and Pu enhances our understanding of the Fukushima Daiichi accident. Deviations in 239+240Pu/137Cs activity ratios underscore nonvolatile processes, emphasizing the accident's complexity. Future research should expand this data set for a more comprehensive understanding of the accident's nuances.
Plutonium Isotopes (239-241Pu) Dissolved in Pacific Ocean Waters Detected by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry: No Effects of the Fukushima Accident Observed

Abstract:The concentration of plutonium (Pu) and the isotopic ratios of 240Pu to 239Pu and 241Pu to 239Pu were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) in Pacific Ocean water samples (20 L each) collected in late 2012. The isotopic Pu ratios are important indicators of different contamination sources and were used to identify a possible release of Pu into the ocean by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. In particular, 241Pu is a well-suited indicator for a recent entry of Pu because 241Pu from fallout of nuclear weapon testings has already significantly decayed. A total of 10 ocean water samples were prepared at the Radiochemie München of the TUM and analyzed at the Vienna Environmental Research Laboratory (VERA). Several samples showed a slightly elevated 240Pu/239Pu ratio of up to 0.22 ± 0.02 compared to global fallout (240Pu/239Pu = 0.180 ± 0.007), whereas all measured 241Pu-to-239Pu ratios were consistent with nuclear weapon fallout (241Pu/239Pu < 2.4 × 10-3), which means that no impact from the Fukushima accident was detected. From the average 241Pu-to-239Pu ratio of 8-2+3 ×10-4 at a sampling station located at a distance of 39.6 km to FDNPP, the 1-σ upper limit for the FDNPP contribution to the 239Pu inventory in the water column was estimated to be 0.2%. Pu, with the signature of weapon-grade Pu was found in a single sample collected around 770 km off the west coast of the United States.

Abstract:Radiocesium isotopes were released into the environment in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, which resulted from the massive Tohoku earthquake in March 2011. Lake Inba is located in Chiba Prefecture about 200 km from the FDNPP site and the lake was contaminated by radioactivity from the accident. The present work was carried out in order to investigate the vertical distributions and accumulations of radiocesium and Pu in sediment cores collected during 2011-2015, and to study the migration behaviors of radiocesium and Pu isotopes in the sediments. The observed Cs-134/Cs-137 activity ratios in the core samples were approximately 1 (decay-corrected to 15 March, 2011), suggesting that sediment samples were contaminated by the FDNPP-released radiocesium. Compared with radiocesium inventories in soil in the area surroundihg the Lake Inba, the calculated higher radiocesium inventories of the collected sediment cores indicated that most of the radiocesium was subsequently accumulated in the lake, and that the radiocesium input by atmospheric deposition and input from surrounding soil were greater than the output of the radiocesium. The Pu239+240 activities in the sediments were all within the background level seen before the accident. The atom ratios of Pu-240/Pu-239 ranged from 0.175 to 0.210, suggesting that Pu originated from global stratospheric fallout rather than from the FDNPP accident. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, Japan, released the largest quantity of radionuclides into the terrestrial environment since the 1986 accident at Chernobyl. This accident resulted in 2.7 PBq of radiocaesium (137Cs) contaminated forests, agricultural lands, grasslands and urban areas, which subsequently migrated through soil and waterways in the Fukushima Prefecture. In this Review, we synthesize knowledge regarding the deposition, distribution and transport of fallout radionuclides, especially 137Cs, in the terrestrial environment after the FDNPP accident, which were revealed by extensive and continuous environmental monitoring. Anthropogenic activities, high run-off and steep topography led to a rapid decline in the activity concentration of 137Cs in soils and rivers, especially in the first year after the accident. The decline in exposed radioactivity was notably faster than that seen after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, likely related to differences in geography and climate, and the intensive remediation activities in Fukushima. However, forests in Fukushima have retained a notable amount of 137Cs in the upper centimetres of soil and could persist as a source of 137Cs into rivers. For continued understanding of both natural and fallout radionuclide behaviour in the environment, there must be long-term accessibility of the data collected in response to the FDNPP accident.
Plutonium in sediments of the Eastern Guangdong coast-its sources and their contribution

Abstract:The 239+240Pu activities and 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios of surface sediments from the Eastern Guangdong coast (EGDC) were determined by sector field ICP-MS in order to examine the sources of plutonium (Pu) and quantify their contributions. The 239+240Pu activities in the EGDC ranged from 0.113 to 0.451 Bq kg-1, with an average of 0.225 ± 0.090 Bq kg-1 (n = 17). Consistently high 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios, ranging from 0.218 to 0.274 (average = 0.254 ± 0.014, n = 17), indicate a non-global fallout Pu source in the EGDC. The horizontal distribution of the 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in the EGDC sediment suggests the non-global fallout Pu is sourced from close-in fallout from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG). Using a simple two end-member mixing model, we calculated the relative proportions of Pu from the PPG and global fallout in the EGDC to be 57 ± 9 % and 43 ± 9 %, respectively. Moreover, from the well-defined relationship between 239+240Pu activity and total organic carbon content in sediments and a two end-member mixing model using δ13C, we further calculated the Terr-global fallout (riverine input) and Mar-global fallout (direct atmospheric deposition) to be 11 ± 2 % and 32 ± 6 %, respectively. Finally, from the activity levels and atom ratios of Pu isotopes in the EGDC, we established a baseline for future use in environmental risk assessment related to nuclear power plant operations.

Abstract:Sediment core samples were collected from Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea, western Northwest Pacific Ocean, and their 239+240 Pu activities and 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atom ratios were determined by sector field ICP-MS. The activities of 239+240 Pu ranged from 0.556 ± 0.025 to 0.745 ± 0.023 mBq/g. The atom ratios of 240 Pu/ 239 Pu were almost constant within the whole depth; the average value was 0.227 ± 0.014. This atom ratio was significantly higher than the mean global fallout ratio of 0.18, proving the presence of close-in fallout Pu that originated from the Pacific Proving Ground (PPG). The water masses exchanges between the Kuroshio Current and the Seto Inland Sea brought the PPG source Pu to this area, then Pu was extensively scavenged into sediment particles supplied by the rivers around the bay. The relative contributions of the global fallout Pu and the PPG close-in fallout Pu were evaluated by the two end-member mixing model. The contribution of the PPG close-in fallout was 38–41% of the total Pu in sediment. The remaining 59–62% was attributed to direct global fallout and the land-origin Pu transported by the rivers around the Hiroshima Bay.
Global Fallout Pu Isotopes, 137cs and 237np Records in the Sediments of Lake Xingkai and Their Response to Environmental Changes in the Catchment

Abstract:Plutonium (Pu) isotopes, neptunium-237 (Np-237) and cesium-137 (Cs-137) in the environment have emerged as important tools for promoting geochemical studies. To elucidate their source terms, deposition process, and the geochemical behavior, as well as their response to catchment environmental changes in lacustrine environment, Pu-239,Pu- 240, Cs-137 and Np-237 were determined for the first time in a sediment core collected from the Lake Xingkai. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (0.163-0.178) in all sediment samples corresponded well with the typical global fallout value of similar to 0.18, indicating that there were no other significant radioactive source inputs. The activity concentrations of Pu239+240, Cs-137, and Np-237 were 0.010-1.030 Bq kg (-1), 6.4-30.1 Bq kg -1, and (0.020-2.195) x 10-3 Bq kg(-1), respectively. They presented similar vertical distribution patterns, with a typical global fallout peak (15-16 cm) corresponding to the year of 1964. On the other hand, the 237Np/239Pu atom ratios exhibited a wide range (0.207-1.306), and showed a trend of increasing values with depth, implying different geochemical behaviors of these two elements. Using the advection-dispersion equation model (ADE), the obtained apparent dispersion coefficient of 237Np (0.58 +/- 0.09 cm2 yr(-1)) was higher than that of 239+240Pu (0.38 +/- 0.07 cm2 yr(-1)), indicating that Np has greater mobility than Pu. The total global fallout inventories of 239+240Pu, Cs-137, and 237Np were 145, 4592, and 0.291 Bq m- 2, respectively. Approximately 46% of the total global fallout was derived from riverine input, indicating that severe soil erosion occurred in the catchment of Lake Xingkai in the past decades.

Abstract:Long-term monitoring of Pu isotopes in seawater is required for assessing Pu contamination in the marine environment from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. In this study, we established an accurate and precise analytical method based on anion-exchange chromatography and SF-ICP-MS. This method was able to determine Pu isotopes in seawater samples with small volumes (20-60L). The U decontamination factor was 3×10(7)-1×10(8), which provided sufficient removal of interfering U from the seawater samples. The estimated limits of detection for (239)Pu and (240)Pu were 0.11fgmL(-1) and 0.08fgmL(-1), respectively, which corresponded to 0.01mBqm(-3) for (239)Pu and 0.03mBqm(-3) for (240)Pu when a 20L volume of seawater was measured. We achieved good precision (2.9%) and accuracy (0.8%) for measurement of the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio in the standard Pu solution with a (239)Pu concentration of 11fgmL(-1) and (240)Pu concentration of 2.7fgmL(-1). Seawater reference materials were used for the method validation and both the (239+240)Pu activities and (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios agreed well with the expected values. Surface and bottom seawater samples collected off Fukushima in the western North Pacific since March 2011 were analyzed. Our results suggested that there was no significant variation of the Pu distribution in seawater in the investigated areas compared to the distribution before the accident.

Abstract:The China Sea is faced with a heightened risk of anthropogenic radionuclide contamination, whose provenance, scavenging and migration are imperative to investigate to provide the background and nuclear safety emergency assessment. This study pioneers the measurement of anthropogenic plutonium and neptunium (239+240Pu and 237Np) concentrations and atom ratios (240Pu/239Pu and 237Np/239Pu) in sediment cores from the northern Taiwan Strait and the adjacent East China Sea using SF-ICP-MS, exploring their applications and characteristics. Typical vertical profiles confirm that Pu and 237Np serve as geochronological tools, with the 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio as a fingerprint refining the chronology. Fallout history and sedimentary environments have been reconstructed by the comprehensive application of 239+240Pu, 237Np and 210Pb chronologies. The primary sources of Pu isotopes and 237Np are global fallout and close-in fallout from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG). Inventories of 239+240Pu ranged from 44 ± 3 Bq/m2 to 348 ± 11 Bq/m2, with PPG contributions from 57% to 72%, while 237Np inventories varied from 58 ± 5 mBq/m2 to 137 ± 8 mBq/m2. Differences in the distribution of Pu and 237Np are attributed to their distinct behaviors and sedimentary environments. Particle-reactive Pu isotopes are predominantly preserved in sediment, whereas conservative 237Np remains mostly dissolved in water, easily re-entering seawater from sediment through resuspension processes. Higher environmental mobility also makes more downward diffusion of 237Np than Pu isotopes.
