Abstract:A green and simple deep eutectic solvent-based ultrasound-assisted liquid phase microextraction method has been developed for the preconcentration of copper as 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(diethylamino) phenol chelates. The effects of pH, ligand concentration, DES volume, sample volume, and tetrahydrofuran volume were investigated. Analytical performance parameters like limit of detection, limit of quantification, preconcentration factor, and relative standard deviation were determined as 6.6 μg L−1, 21.8 μg L−1, 15, and <5%, respectively. Validation of the developed method was checked by the analysis of certificated reference materials. The procedure was successfully applied to determination of copper in olive oil and water samples.

Abstract:A rapid and novel two-step dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction method was established for the separation and enrichment of trace cadmium, nickel, and copper in food and environmental water prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the first microextraction step, carbon tetrachloride was employed to extract metal-diethyldithiocarbamate chelates from aqueous solution with ultrasound. In the following step, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were added and used to collect the analytes in the organic solvent. The sample pH, type and volume of extraction solvent, mass of magnetic nanoparticles, concentration of the chelating agent, concentration of sodium chloride, and sonication time were optimized. The linear dynamic range was from 0.01 to 20 micrograms per liter with correlation coefficients between 0.9990 and 0.9992. Enrichment factors were 78, 79, and 81 for cadmium, nickel, and copper, respectively. The limits of detection for cadmium, nickel, and copper were 0.007, 0.009, and 0.017 micrograms per liter, with relative standard deviations from 1.1 to 2.6 percent. The developed method was validated by the determination of cadmium, nickel, and copper in rice and mussel certified reference materials, food, and environmental water with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Electromyography is an essential part of neuromuscular diagnosis. Due to practicability, it mostly relies on qualitative judgement. Therefore, it is examiner dependent, and critical assessment of the EMG report is crucial. This may be furthered by (1) acquaintance with the genesis of the EMG, which has recently been rendered more transparent by computer simulation, and (2) experience with examiner-independent, quantitative diagnostic algorithms. By both approaches, it is intended to familiarize the reader with modern quality standards of EMG diagnosis. The diagnostic algorithm used to this end is discriminant MUP classification, which separated neurogenic and myopathic conditions without recourse to examiner judgements. This success shows that quantitative EMG, which has become available for routine practice, will add weight to EMG differential diagnosis.

Abstract:A novel method, based on extraction induced by emulsion breaking, is proposed for rapid simultaneous determination of iron, manganese, copper, and zinc in jet fuel by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated including the concentrations of nitric acid and emulsifying agents, centrifugal speed, and extraction time. The limits of detection for iron, manganese, copper, and zinc were 0.116, 0.028, 0.06, and 0.085 mu g L-1, respectively. The accuracy of the method was tested by the analysis of spiked samples (recovery percentages between 90% and 107% were observed) and by comparison with a well-established method.

Abstract:This work presents a novel on-line flow-batch dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction system for the determination of molybdenum in water, meat, and vegetable material with electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy ( ET AAS ) as detection technique. After optimizing the experimental conditions, the analytical performance of the new methodology was determined. A limit of detection of 0.03 μg/L for water and 0.02 μg/kg for the other matrices, as well as an enrichment factor of 130 were obtained employing this methodology. Standard reference materials were used for accuracy and precision evaluation. No significant differences were found at the 95% confidence level between the certified and obtained values, and precision expressed as repeatability (RSD) was better than 5% in all cases. The developed automated methodology offers great advantages when compared to manual dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, such as low risk of contamination while working in closed systems, minimal handling, reduced exposure of the analyst to the chemical products, greater security, improvement in repeatability and the elimination of the laborious and time-consuming procedure of phase separation by centrifugation. The method was successfully applied for the determination of molybdenum in natural groundwater, bovine and sheep meat, and pasture samples.

Abstract:A novel method of an effervescence-assisted switchable hydrophilicity-solvent based liquid-phase microextraction (EA-SHS-LPME) was developed to preconcentration of copper traces in organic and conventional growth vegetable samples prior to determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry with micro-sampling (µS-FAAS) system. The methodology is based on the change of decanoic acid's hydrophobicity with changing pH. Decanoic acid is solid under room conditions, so phase separation is effortless and highly efficient. In the proposed study, 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) was used as a chelating agent, Na2CO3 was used as a CO2 source, and H2SO4 was used as a proton donor. Several factors affecting the microextraction efficiency, such as pH, 8-HQ amount, decanoic acid amount, Na2CO3 and H2SO4 amount and concentration, and extraction temperature, were investigated and optimised. Optimal conditions were determined as pH:6, 100 μL of 0.1% (w/v) 8-HQ, 75 μL decanoic acid, each 500 μL of 0.1 M Na2CO3 and H2SO4, and 40°C. Under the optimal conditions, the enhancement factor (EF) was 52, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.75 µg L−1, the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 2.52 µg L−1, and relative standard deviation for 25 μg L−1 (n = 10) was 0.94, respectively. The matrix effect was investigated by comparing the solvent-based calibration curve with the matrix-matched calibration curve. The developed method was successfully applied to the extraction and determination of copper in certified reference material and organic and conventional grown vegetable samples. The results were compared with a statistical evaluation method, which is ANOVA. The development EA-SHS-LPME method is a sensitive, repeatable, economical, environmentally friendly, fast, and easy-to-apply to enhance and determine Cu(II) contents in vegetable samples. The LOD values obtained with the proposed method make FAAS compatible with the instruments, which are relatively more expensive and more difficult to use.

Abstract:In this work, a novel functional and reliable computer-controlled flow-batch lab-in-syringe (LIS) platform was developed for liquid phase microextraction (LPME) based on the use of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as green alternatives to conventional extractants. The proposed automatic on-line LIS system is reported for the first time and demonstrated for the determination of toxic metals in aqueous samples, as a front-end to flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). To the best of our knowledge, the determination of metals by atomic spectrometric techniques processing a LIS preconcentration system using NADES has not been previously reported. The analytical process included the in-syringe metal complexation of Cd, Cu, and Pb (model analytes) with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate and the subsequent microextraction of the resulted complexes by a mixture of menthol:heptanoic acid at a molar ratio of 1:2. After phase separation, the NADES was transferred towards the flame for direct atomization in an automatic and precise manner. The main attributes that affect the performance of the method were thoroughly studied. Under optimum conditions, the limits of detection ranged between 0.54 and 4.52 μg L −1 corresponding to a sample consumption of 4000 μL. The relative standard deviations were less than 3.8% demonstrating good method precision. As a proof-of-concept, the developed system was used for the analysis of drinking and environmental water samples resulting in good relative recoveries (i.e., 94.0–104.0%). The green character and the applicability of the proposed approach were demonstrated by the Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), and Blue Applicability Grade Index (BAGI), respectively.

Abstract:A flow-injection on-line adsorption preconcentration flame atomic absorption spectrometric system for the determination of copper was developed. The copper diethyldithiocarbarmate ehelate was adsorbed on the walls of a PTFE knotted reactor. The sorbed species was eluted by isobutyl methyl ketone at a flow-rate of 4.1 ml min−1. Air segmentation between sample and eluent was employed to avoid mixing of the neighbouring phases under fast elution rates. An enhancement factor of 120 and a detection limit of 0.2 μg l−1 Cu were achieved for a 60 s loading period (sample throughput 46 h−1). The relative standard deviations were 1.7% and 3.6% at the 20 μg l−1 and 2 μg l−1 Cu levels, respectively. Interference from at least 50 μg l−1 Fe(III) was eliminated by adding ascorbic acid. The method has been applied successfully to determine μg l−1 amounts of copper in drinking water and sea water and Ju μg−1 amounts of copper in rice.

Abstract:An automatic procedure with a high current-density anodic electrodissolution unit (HDAE) is proposed for the determination of aluminium, copper and zinc in non-ferroalloys by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, based on the direct solid analysis. It consists of solenoid valve-based commutation in a flow-injection system for on-line sample electro-dissolution and calibration with one multi-element standard, an electrolytic cell equipped with two electrodes (a silver needle acts as cathode, and sample as anode), and an intelligent unit. The latter is assembled in a PC-compatible microcomputer for instrument control, and for data acquisition and processing. General management of the process is achieved by use of software written in Pascal. Electrolyte compositions, flow rates, commutation times, applied current and electrolysis time were investigated. A 0.5 mol l(-1) HN03 solution was elected as electrolyte and 300 A/cm(2) as the continuous current pulse.The performance of the proposed system was evaluated by analysing aluminium in Al-alloy samples, and copper/zinc in brass and bronze samples, respectively. The system handles about 50 samples per hour. Results are precise (R.S.D. < 2%) and in agreement with those obtained by ICP-AES and spectrophotometry at a 95% confidence level.
Integration of glutathione disulfide-mediated extraction and capillary electrophoresis for determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in edible oils

Abstract:A novel method is introduced for extracting and enriching Cd(II) and Pb(II) from edible oils using glutathione disulfide (GSSG) as both an extractant and a phase-separation agent. The ions in the oils were initially extracted into an aqueous solution containing GSSG. After mixing the solution with acetonitrile at the appropriate volume ratio, a new phase formed, resulting in enrichment of the analytes. The experimental conditions were optimized using response surface methodology with a central composite design. Under optimal conditions, the method offered a combined enrichment factor of >660, with combined extraction efficiencies of 84.31% and 83.35% for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Finally, the method was conjugated to capillary electrophoresis to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) in edible oil samples, with detection limits of 0.45 and 1.24 ppb, respectively. In comparison to traditional approaches, the GSSG-based method demonstrates rapidity, efficiency, and recyclability in extracting heavy metal ions from complex matrices.

Abstract:A procedure has been developed for simultaneous separation/preconcentration of copper, nickel, and zinc based on in situ ionic liquid-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method as a prior step to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The analytes reacted with sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate at pH 7 to form hydrophobic chelates, which were separated and preconcentrated in the ionic liquid phase. The method is fast, simple, accurate, and environmentally friendly. The parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the proposed method such as the pH of sample solution, centrifugation time, type and volume of the dispersive solvent, and the salt effect were studied. Enrichment factors of 61.8, 61.2, and 40.0 and detection limits of 0.79, 0.93, and 0.71 µg L-1 were obtained for copper, nickel, and zinc, respectively. The relative standard deviations based on six replicate measurements were between 1.0 and 2.7%. The method was successfully applied to the extraction and determination of these metals in wastewater and alloy samples.

Abstract:Edible oil safety impacts food safety and consumer health. The typical pollutants—aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and benzo(α)pyrene (BaP), and kitchen waste oil—are significant hazards in edible oil consumption. Herein, we developed a dual-readout lateral flow immunoassay (tdLFIA) for the multi-quantitative detection of AFB1, BaP and capsaicin (CAP). A novel monoclonal antibody against BaP was developed with a sensitivity of 1.92 ng/mL. Subsequently, gold nanoparticles and Eu3+ labelled fluorescent nanospheres were synthesized as colorimetric and fluorescent sensors. A rapid synchronous pretreatment method based on immunomagnetic beads(IMAB)combined with a molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) was developed. The tdLFIA enabled a rapid response of 7 min for AFB1, BaP and CAP detection, with quantitative limits of detection of 0.003, 0.6, and 0.01 ng/mL, respectively. The proposed strategy indicated reliability and has been applied in real samples, providing useful products for evaluating edible oil quality and safety.

Abstract:A novel environmentally friendly rapid cloud point extraction at room temperature coupled to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (RT-CPE-GFAAS) for Copper (II) traces quantification was developed. Were found the most optimal conditions for the instant surfactant rich phase of Triton X-100 formation and the extraction of Copper (II) as a complex with 6,7-dihydroxy-2-phenyl-4-methylbenzopyrylium perchlorate (DHMPhB) at room temperature immediately: addition of 0.5 mol L −1 H 2 SO 4 solution to pH 4.5; 0.15 mol L −1 ammonium benzoate; 1.5 · 10 –4 mol L −1 DHMPhB and 1 v/v.% Triton X-100. As a diluent for surfactant rich phase was used 2-propanol. The calibration plot constructed under the optimal conditions is linear in the range of Copper (II) concentrations of 0.31–127 μg L −1 , and the limit of quantification and limit of detection are 0.31 and 0.09 μg L −1 respectively. The developed RT-CPE-GFAAS technique was successfully used to determinate Copper (II) traces in water samples with affordable results.

Abstract:A method was developed for the determination of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) in edible oils, achieving similar limits of quantification than those obtained by online extraction methodologies, i.e., 0.5 mg/kg. The isolation of MOSH and MOAH was performed in a silver nitrated silica gel stationary phase prior to their analysis by gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC-FID). To improve the sensitivity, the simulated on-column injection method, using a suitable liner, was optimized. The method was validated at 0.5, 10.0 and 17.9 mg/kg, and recoveries ranged from 80 to 110%. Intra and inter-day precision were evaluated at the same levels, and relative standard deviation (RSD) was lower than 20%. The method was applied to a total of 27 samples of different types of oil previously analyzed in an accredited laboratory, detecting MOSH up to 79.2 mg/kg and MOAH up to 22.4 mg/kg.

Abstract:Seventeen edible vegetable oils were analyzed spectrometrically for their metal (Cu, Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Zn) contents. Toxic metals in edible vegetable oils were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). The highest metal concentrations were measured as 0.0850, 0.0352, 0.0220, 0.0040, 0.0010, 0.0074, 0.0045, 0.0254 and 0.2870 mg/kg for copper in almond oil, for iron in corn oil-(c), for manganese in soybean oil, for cobalt in sunflower oil-(b) and almond oil, for chromium in almond oil, for lead in virgin olive oil, for cadmium in sunflower oil-(e), for nickel almond oil and for zinc in almond oil respectively. The method for determining toxic metals in edible vegetable oils by using ICP-AES is discussed. The metals were extracted from low quantities of oil (2-3 g) with a 10% nitric acid solution. The extracted metal in acid solution can be injected into the ICPAES. The proposed method is simple and allows the metals to be determined in edible vegetable oils with a precision estimated below 10% relative standard deviation (RSD) for Cu, 5% for Fe, 15% for Mn, 8% for Co, 10% for Cr, 20% for Pb, 5% for Cd, 16% for Ni and 11% for Zn.

Multivariate optimization for the determination of cadmium and lead in crude palm oil by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after extraction induced by emulsion breaking

Abstract:The present work reports the development of an analytical method for the determination of trace amounts of Cd and Pb in crude palm oil using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF AAS) after extraction induced by emulsion breaking (EIEB). The method was based on an oil-in-water emulsion preparation to promote a high contact area between the sample drops and the acid extractant solution. Emulsification was assisted by ultrasound energy using HNO3 and Triton X-114 surfactant solutions to increase the efficiency of the extraction. Afterwards, the emulsion was broken by heating, and the acid aqueous phase in the bottom of conical glass tubes was collected for the determination of metals by GF AAS. Cadmium and lead extraction was simultaneously optimized using Doehlert design and desirability function. The best extractions were achieved using a sonication time of 18 min, a HNO3 concentration of 2.0 mol L−1 and a surfactant concentration of 4.4% (v v-1) at a breaking temperature of 90 °C. The developed method presented quantification limits of 0.17 and 0.13 μg kg−1 and precisions (repeatability,%RSD, 10.8 μg kg−1) of 1.8 and 5.4% for Cd and Pb, respectively. Addition/recovery tests gave results between 88.5% and 112%. The amounts of Cd and Pb in the analyzed samples ranged from 1.5–2.5 and 2.53–6.76 μg kg−1, respectively.

Abstract:A flow-injection system was developed in which alloy metal samples are electrolytically dissolved and the dissolved samples are analysed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The effects of electrolyte composition and electrolysis parameters on the dissolution of the sample were studied. The method was used for the determination of copper in aluminium alloys. Electrolyte solutions consisting of 0.2-1.0 M nitric acid are better than other electrolytes tested with regard to both alloy sample dissolution and determination of copper by FAAS. The peak height increases linearly with the electrolysis time or current within a certain range. The detection limit depends on the sensitivity of the detector used, and can be improved by increasing the electrolysis time or current. Generally, aluminium alloys containing 0.5-10% copper can give suitable signals for FAAS determination. The reproducibility of electrolysis and determination is about 4% for the same sampling points and 5% for different sampling points on the alloy sample.

Abstract:Continuing a line of research initiated by Larsen, Liu and Wang (12), Martin and Yap (13), Gtirkanli IS), and influenced by Reiter's presen- tation of Beurling and Segal algebras in Reiter (2,10) this paper presents the study of a family of Banach ideals of Beurling algebras LI(G}, G a w locally compact Abelian group. These spaces are defined by weighted LP-conditions of their Fourier transforms. In the first section invariance properties and asymptotic estimates for the translation and modulation ope- rators are given. Using these it is possible to characterize inclusions in section 3 and to show that two spaces of this type coincide if and only if their parameters are equal. In section 4 the existence of approximate iden- tities in these algebras is established, from which, among other consequen- ces, the bijection between the closed ideals of these algebras and those of the corresponding Beurling algebra is derived.
Determination of Fe, Cu, and Pb in edible oils using choline chloride:ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction associated with microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry

Abstract:A new simple, fast and environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvent based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DES-based DLLME) methodology assisted by vortex is presented for the separation and preconcentration of three elements (i.e., Fe, Cu and Pb) from edible oil samples (i.e., soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, sesame, and olive oil) prior to the determination by microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES). The deep eutectic solvent selected as extractant (i.e., choline chloride and ethylene glycol, 1:2) is synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the extraction conditions are optimized by a two steps experimental design. Under the optimum extraction conditions (i.e., diluted sample weight: 8.6 g; DES volume: 100 μL; extraction time: 1 min; centrifugation time and speed: 3 min and 3000 rpm; and dispersion system: vortex) the analytical method presents excellent linearity (i.e., R 2 values higher than 0.99) in the range 10–500 μg kg −1 , repeatability (i.e., CV values lower than 9.2%), and limits of detection (LOD) values of 3, 2 and 0.7 μg kg −1 for Pb, Fe and Cu, respectively. None of the analytes displayed amounts over the upper limit permitted by law, and recovery values of all analytes evaluated in the different samples using external standard calibration were close to 100%, which excludes significant matrix effects. Finally, AGREEprep metric has been used to evaluate the method greenness (final score of 0.47) and it has been compared successfully with previous publications for the same type of analytes and matrices.
