Abstract:Abstract Molecular structures of novel trans-[NiR2L2] complexes [L=PMe3, R=C6H3(OMe)2-2,6 (1a) and C6H(OMe)2-2,6-Br2-3,5 (2a)] were determined by the X-ray crystal structure analysis, which revealed a remarkable effect of meta-bromo-substitution on the conformation of the ortho-methoxy groups, correlating well with the reactivity difference between 1a and 2a toward carbon monoxide.
Bay-Substitution Effect of Perylene Diimides on Supramolecular Chirality and Optoelectronic Properties of Their Self-Assembled Nanostructures.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) organic chiral supramolecules have received a great deal of attention for their promising applications in chiral recognition systems, chemical sensors, catalysts, and optoelectronics. Compared to modifications at the imide position of a perylene diimide (PDI), few studies have explored bay substitution of chiral PDIs and their self-assemblies into 1D nanomaterials. Herein, we describe the synthesis of three bay-substituted PDIs and explore the effects of bay substitution on supramolecular chirality by examining circular dichroism spectra and the optoelectronic performance of chiral PDI nanomaterials in phototransistors. Among the three fabricated self-assemblies, nanomaterials based on (R)-CN-CPDI-Ph exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.17 cm2 V-1 s-1, a low threshold voltage of -1 V, and enhanced optoelectronic performance. For example, the photoresponsivity and external quantum efficiency of (R)-CN-CPDI-Ph assemblies were 4-fold higher than those of (R)-2Br-CPDI-Ph and (R)-2F-CPDI-Ph. All three nanomaterials exhibited fast switching speeds compared with previously reported N-substituted PDIs, suggesting that bay substitution can be an effective means of achieving rapid photoswitching. A comprehensive study using density functional theory calculations and crystal analyses revealed that the enhanced optoelectronic performance of (R)-CN-CPDI-Ph nanomaterials is related to the substitution of CN at the bay position of PDI. This minor change provides simultaneous improvements in electron injectability and structural order. Our findings demonstrate that bay substitution can significantly impact the self-assembly, supramolecular chirality, and optoelectronic properties of PDI nanomaterials.

Abstract:Porphyrins are prime candidates for a host of molecular electronics applications. Understanding the electronic structure and the role of anchoring groups on porphyrins is a prerequisite for researchers to comprehend their role in molecular devices at the molecular junction interface. Here, we use the density functional theory approach to investigate the influence of anchoring groups on Ni and Zn diphenylporphyrin molecules. The changes in geometry, electronic structure, and electronic descriptors were evaluated. There are minimal changes observed in geometry when changing the metal from Ni to Zn and the anchoring group. However, we find that the distribution of electron density changes when changing the anchoring group in the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. This has a direct effect on electronic descriptors such as global hardness, softness, and electrophilicity. Additionally, the optical spectra of both Ni and Zn diphenylporphyrin molecules exhibit either blue or red shifts when changing the anchoring group. These results indicate the importance of the anchoring group on the electronic structure and optical properties of porphyrin molecules.

Abstract:An electronic structure analysis of two nickel(II) tetrapyrrole complexes bearing β-alkylthio substituents, NiOMTP and NiOETPz, has been carried out through a combination of high-resolution XPS experiments and DFT calculations. The Ni 2p XPS spectra show a 0.5 eV shift to higher energy of the Ni 2p[Formula: see text] and Ni 2p[Formula: see text] binding energies on going from the porphyrin to the porphyrazine complex. This shift, which is well-reproduced by relativistic spin-orbit ZORA calculations, is indicative of a depletion of electron density on the central metal. Such a depletion of electron density is related to the macrocycle-induced changes in the metal-ligand interactions. In the porphyrazine complex both the ligand to metal [Formula: see text] donation and the metal to ligand [Formula: see text]-back donation increase. The latter increases slightly more than the former, however, leading to a decrease of electron density on the central metal.

Abstract:Pincer complexes of the type [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3]NiSC(6)H(4)Z (R = Ph and i-Pr; Z = p-OCH3, p-CH3, H, p-Cl, and p-CF3) have been synthesized from [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3]NiCl and sodium arylthiolate. X-ray structure determinations of these thiolate complexes have shown a somewhat constant Ni-S bond length (approx. 2.20 angstrom) but an almost unpredictable orientation of the thiolate ligand. Equilibrium constants for various thiolate exchange (between a nickel thiolate complex and a free thiol, or between two different nickel thiolate complexes) reactions have been measured. Evidently, the thiolate ligand with an electron-withdrawing substituent prefers to bond with "[2,6-(Ph2PO)(2)C6H3]Ni" rather than "[2,6-(i-Pr2PO)(2)C6H3]Ni", and bonds least favourably with hydrogen. The reactions of the thiolate complexes with halogenated compounds such as PhCH2Br, CH3I, CCl4, and Ph3CCl have been examined and several mechanistic pathways have been explored.

Abstract:Directly‐linked NiII porphyrin—NiII pyricorrole hybrid was obtained upon NiII complexation of internally‐bridged octaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1). The structure has been unambiguously revealed by X‐ray diffraction analysis. The pyricorrole skeleton is different from that reported earlier with regard to the position of pyridine moiety. The new pyricorrole macrocycle was characterized as a weak 18π aromatic molecule. The thermodynamic stability of NiII pyricorrole skeleton indicated by DFT calculation may drive this rearrangement.

Abstract:A systematic on‐surface study on the effect that polymerizing porphyrin units via Ullmann coupling has on the Ni ions stabilized within the center of porphyrins is introduced. The Cu(111) support activates molecular magnetism for both the single‐molecule reference related to nickel tetraphenylporphyrin and the extended molecular nanostructure with the same units covalently interconnected. Thereby, polymerization facilitates fine tuning of Ni centers. Porphyrins are promising multifunctional units particularly interesting for the realization of molecular nanodevices. Their structural variety allows to create precursors suitable for the on‐surface polymerization of porphyrin blocks. The corresponding increased stability and improved transport properties of the formed polymerized molecular nanostructures make them practically worthwhile. For the case of 2D porphyrin materials, the effect of polymerization on the magnetic properties of transition metal ions has not been reported yet. Therefore, details on the properties of an extended covalent nickel tetraphenylporphyrin network formed via Ullmann coupling on the Cu(111) surface are reported. By using photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies together with density functional theory calculations, it is systematically evolving how the functional properties of the Ni centers are changed within a polymerized molecular structure in comparison to single‐molecule nickel tetraphenylporphyrin derivatives that build the 2D molecular network. A model that explains the differences in the electronic and magnetic properties observed for the Ni centers in both structures based on the additional rigidity characteristic of the molecular layer after polymerization is drawn.

Abstract:Four new heteroleptic Ni(II) complexes with general formula [Ni(dppe)(L)] (dppe = 1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethane; L = 4-fluoro benzyl cyanide dithiolate (Ni-1); 2-trifluoromethyl benzyl cyanide dithiolate (Ni-2); 3-trifluoromethyl benzyl cyanide dithiolate (Ni-3) and 4-trifluoromethyl benzyl cyanide dithiolate (Ni-4)) have been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically as well as employing single crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses for Ni-1 and Ni-3 reveal distorted square planar geometry around the Ni(II) center satisfied by two sulfur and two phosphorus centers of dithiolate and dppe ligands, respectively. Both Ni-1 and Ni-3 form interesting supramolecular arrays sustained by C-H···F, C-S···H, C···H(Ar), C≡N···H and (Ar)C···F intermolecular interactions. These interactions have further been investigated using Hirshfeld surface analyses. These complexes have been used as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) studies and the results suggest that the electrocatalytic activity of Ni-1 outperforms electrocatalytic activities of other three complexes and displays with η10 of 814 mV and Tafel slope of 94 mV·dec-1. The study unveils the effects of fluoro- and trifluoromethyl- substituents and the dihedral angle on the electrocatalytic properties towards OER of these newly developed complexes.

Abstract:The cruciform linker molecule here features two designer functions: the pyrazole donors for framework construction, and the vicinal alkynyl units for benzannulation to form nanographene units into the Ni8-pyrazolate scaffold. Unlike the full 12 connections of the Ni8(OH)4(H2O)2 clusters in other Ni8-pyrazolate networks, significant linker deficiency was observed here, leaving about half of the Ni(II) sites capped by acetate ligands, which can be potentially removed to open the metal sites for reactivity. The crystalline Ni8-pyrazolate scaffold also retains the crystalline order even after thermal treatments (up to 300 °C) that served to partially graphitize the neighboring alkyne units. Abstract:Effect of terminal substituents on self-assembly behavior of porphyrin molecules has been studied with three derivatives modified with distinctly different substituents, 5,15-(di-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl) porphyrin, 5,15-(dimesityl) porphyrin, and 5,15-(di-4ethynylphenyl) porphyrin. Scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional calculations reveal that 5,15-(di-3,5-di-tertbutylphenyl) porphyrin, 5,15-(dimesityl) porphyrin, and 5,15-(di-4-ethynylphenyl) porphyrin spontaneously give different ordered structures on Ag(110) surface both at room temperature and after annealing. It is clear that the tert-butylphenyl substituent could increase the intermolecular van der Waals interactions to form stable network structure under condition of thermal activation, whereas the mesityl substituent plays an essential role in the formation of rigid chain structure as a result of the CH-pi interactions between the mesityl groups of molecule enantiomers. Moreover, the ethynylphenyl substituent could induce metal atoms to coordinate with ethynyl to form organometallic chains. Copyright (C) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Structure-Dependent Electronic Transition in A New Type of Pi-Electron Delocalized Multi-Sulfur Bis(Dithiolene)Nickel Complex

Abstract:Four new nickel bis(dithiolene) complexes with different substituent groups on their benzene rings were synthesized and characterized. X-ray structure analysis reveals that the anions of these Ni-complexes exhibit chair-like configurations. Magnetic measurements confirm that compounds 1-4 show antiferromagnetic interactions. The absorption spectra show strong and broad absorptions in the near-infrared region (700-1100 nm). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the HOMO and LUMO energy levels are highly dependent on the electron donating/withdrawing abilities of the substituents. The electron-donating substituent results in a bathochromic-shift absorption, while the electron-withdrawing substituent leads to a hypsochromic-shift absorption band. Moreover, the results of solution-state electrochemical studies also show a good agreement with our findings in spectroscopic and DFT studies.

Anagostic Axial Interactions Inhibit Cross-Coupling Catalytic Activity in Square Planar Pyridinophane Nickel Complexes

Abstract:Herein, we report for the first time the use of the nitrogen-based bidentate molecule [2.2]pyridinophane (N2) as a ligand for metal complexes. Additionally, its improved synthesis allows for electronic modification of the pyridine rings to access the new para-dimethylamino-[2.2]pyridinophane ligand (p-NMe2N2). These ligands bind nickel in an analogous fashion to other pyridinophane ligands, completing the series of tetra-, tri-, and bidentate pyridinophane-nickel complexes. The new compounds exhibit geometrically enforced C-H anagostic interactions between the ethylene bridge protons and the nickel center that are not present in other pyridinophane systems. These ethylene bridge groups also act as an unusual form of steric encumbrance, enforcing square planar geometries in ligand fields that would otherwise adopt tetrahedral structures. In addition, these anagostic interactions inhibit the catalytic performance in Csp3-Csp3 Kumada cross coupling reactions relative to other common bidentate N-ligand platforms, possibly by preventing the formation of the 5-coordinate oxidative addition intermediates.

Fine-Tuning of β-Substitution to Modulate the Lowest Triplet Excited States: A Bioinspired Approach to Design Phosphorescent Metalloporphyrinoids.

Abstract:Learning nature's approach to modulate photophysical properties of NIR porphyrinoids by fine-tuning β-substituents including the number and position, in a manner similar to naturally occurring chlorophylls, has the potential to circumvent the disadvantages of traditional "extended π-conjugation" strategy such as stability, molecular size, solubility, and undesirable π-π stacking. Here we show that such subtle structural changes in Pt(II) or Pd(II) cis/trans-porphodilactones (termed by cis/trans-Pt/Pd) influence photophysical properties of the lowest triplet excited states including phosphorescence, Stokes shifts, and even photosensitization ability in triplet-triplet annihilation reactions with rubrene. Prominently, the overall upconversion capability (η, η = ε·Φ(UC)) of Pd or Pt trans-complex is 10(4) times higher than that of cis-analogue. Nanosecond time-resolved infrared (TR-IR) spectroscopy experiments showed larger frequency shift of ν(C═O) bands (ca. 10 cm(-1)) of cis-complexes than those of trans-complexes in the triplet excited states. These spectral features, combining with TD-DFT calculations, suggest the strong electronic coupling between the lactone moieties and the main porphyrin chromophores and thus the importance of precisely positioning β-substituents by mimicking chlorophylls, as an alternative to "extended π-conjugation", in designing NIR active porphyrinoids.

Abstract:Abstract Designing efficient catalysts with high activity and selectivity is desirable and challenging for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) is a promising molecule catalyst for CO2RR. However, the pristine NiPc suffers from poor CO2 adsorption and activation due to its electron deficiency of Ni–N4 site, which leads to inferior activity and stability during CO2RR. Here, we develop a substituent-induced electronic localization strategy to improve CO2 adsorption and activation, and thus catalytic performance. Theoretic calculations and experimental results indicate that the electronic localization on the Ni site induced by electron-donating substituents (hydroxyl or amino) of NiPc greatly enhances the CO2 adsorption and activation, which is positively associated with the electron-donating abilities of substituents. Employing the optimal catalyst of amino-substituted NiPc to catalyze CO2 into CO in flow cell can achieve an ultrahigh activity and selectivity of 99.8% at the current densities up to 400 mA cm-2. This work offers a novel strategy to regulate the electronic structure of the active site by introducing substituents for highly efficient CO2RR.
Effect of dehydrogenation/hydrogenation on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of Li@porphyrins

Abstract:In the present work, Li@porphyrins and their derivatives were designed in order to explore the effect of dehydrogenation/hydrogenation on linear and nonlinear optical properties. Their stable structures were obtained by the M06-2X method. Moreover, the M06-2X method showed that dehydrogenation/hydrogenation has greatly influences polarizabilities (α0 values) and hyperpolarizabilities (βtot and γtot values): α0 values ranged from 331 to 389 au, βtot values from 0 to 2465 au, and γtot values from −21.2 × 104 to 21.4 × 104 au. This new knowledge of the effect of dehydrogenation/hydrogenation on nonlinear optical properties may prove beneficial to the design and development of high-performance porphyrin materials.FigureThe figure shows the Li@porphyrins 2a and 2b and their derivatives 0, 1 and 3 and 4, respectively, which were designed based on the effect of dehydrogenation/hydrogenation. Interestingly, dehydrogenation/hydrogenation greatly influences their βtot value, which ranges from 0 to 2465 au (according to the M06-2X method).
