Novel Meso-Polyarylamine-bodipy Hybrids: Synthesis and Study of Their Optical Properties

Abstract:A series of 14 meso-polyarylamine-BODIPY (borondipyrromethene) hybrids of the general structure A were synthesized. Two methods were used to prepare them. The first protocol involved a direct Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling of thiomethylbodipys 1-2 with arylaminoboronic acids (4 examples, 75-98%). The second method involves a two-step sequence: a Liebeskind-Srogl reaction to prepare 6 meso-bromoarylbodipys (58-83%) followed by a Suzuki coupling of these Br-containing BODIPYs with arylaminoboronic acids (10 examples, 44-84%). Seven of these derivatives displayed emission in the near-infrared region. The optical properties of compound 18 were rationalized in terms of its crystal structure.

Abstract:We designed and successfully synthesized highly substituted electron-deficient nonplanar Ni(II) porphyrins and their derivatives (1-7) in moderate to good yields. These derivatives were comprehensively characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis. Abstract:Porphyrins are versatile structures capable of acting in multiple ways. A mixed substituted A3B porphyrin, 5-(3-hydroxy-phenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-porphyrin and its Pt(II) complex, were synthesised and fully characterised by 1H- and 13C-NMR, TLC, UV-Vis, FT-IR, fluorescence, AFM, TEM and SEM with EDX microscopy, both in organic solvents and in acidic mediums. The pure compounds were used, firstly, as sensitive materials for sensitive and selective optical and fluorescence detection of hydroquinone with the best results in the range 0.039-6.71 µM and a detection limit of 0.013 µM and, secondly, as corrosion inhibitors for carbon-steel (OL) in an acid medium giving a best performance of 88% in the case of coverings with Pt-porphyrin. Finally, the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) of the free-base and Pt-metalated A3B porphyrins was evaluated in strong alkaline and acidic electrolyte solutions. The best results were obtained for the electrode modified with the metalated porphyrin, drop-casted on a graphite substrate from an N,N-dimethylformamide solution. In the strong acidic medium, the electrode displayed an HER overpotential of 108 mV, at i = -10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope value of 205 mV/dec.

Abstract:This article is focused on the design and photophysical properties of a series of novel porphyrin and metalloporphyrin dendrimers containing cationic η6-chloroarene-η5-cyclopentadienyliron(II) complexes functionalized with naphthalene and capped with ferrocene. The incorporation of cationic η6-chloroarene-η5-cyclopentadienyliron moieties into the dendrimer structures enhances solubility, and facilitates nucleophilic aromatic substitution and addition reactions due to the intense electron-withdrawing ability of the iron center. Divergent approaches were employed to yield highly symmetrical branched materials, with interesting and potentially useful properties. The preparation of these dendrimers was achieved via metal-mediated nucleophilic aromatic substitutions and Steglich esterifications. These dendrimers and their precursors were characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and UV–Visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. Substitution on the porphyrin core with various side chains and terminal functional groups and chromophores had little impact on the porphyrin emission properties, allowing for a wide variety of fluorescent macromolecules to be prepared which retain this characteristic emission. Also, the presence or absence of the organopyrene moieties also had little effect on the emission from these compounds. Complexation of a metal cation, such as Zn2+, by these compounds, did however result in a significant blue shift in the observed fluorescence; this interesting result has the potential for applications in the development of fluorescent-based cation sensors.

Abstract:Retrosynthetically designed and syntheses of three unprecedented core modified N‐confused porphyrinoids exhibiting vis‐NIR absorption with tunable aromaticity is reported. Controlled modification of types of oxidants (chloranil vs. DDQ) has led to the isolation of 18p‐aromatic porphyrinoid 7 (upon chloranil oxidation) while DDQ oxidation has led to 18 e s‐aromatic porphyrinoids 8 and 9. All the three SN3 hybrid N‐confused porphyrinoids 7‐9 have been thoroughly characterized via solution state spectroscopic measurements and in‐depth DFT studies for concluding p‐aromaticity of 7 and s‐aromaticity of 8 and 9. While 7 could recognize the fluoride anion with high selectivity via deprotonation rather than an anion recognition based mechanism, acetate anion binding studies clearly revealed NH···AcO‐ H‐bonding interaction in the host‐guest complex [7‐AcO–] supporting an anion recognition based mechanism. Porphyrinoids 8 and 9 remain unsusceptible to anion recognition. The conformational preorganization and anion induced deprotonation leading to conformational reorganization have been extensively studied by solution state spectroscopic techniques and in depth DFT level theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A series of (4-cyanophenyl)porphyrins have been prepared and structurally characterized by H-1 NMR, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The relative singlet-oxygen quantum yields, two-photon absorption cross-sections and DNA photocleavage activities of these porphyrins were measured. The results show that (4-cyanophenyl)porphyrins with a properly designed hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance for better cellular uptake have potential application in two-photon-absorption photodynamic therapy. Abstract:Electron-rich pyridines with π donor groups in para position play an important role as nucleophiles in organocatalysis, but their ligand properties and utilization in coordination chemistry have received little attention. Herein, we report the synthesis of two electron-rich pyridines 1 and 2 bearing N-heterocyclic imine groups in the para position and explore their coordination chemistry. Experimental and computational methods were used to assess the donor ability of the new pyridines showing that they are stronger donors than aminopyridines and guanidinylpyridines, and that the nature of the N-heterocyclic backbone has a strong influence on the pyridine donor strength. Coordination compounds with Lewis acids including CO 2 , SO 2 , BCl 3 and Pd II ions were synthesized and characterized. Despite the ambident character of the new pyridines, coordination preferably occurs at the pyridine-N atom. Methyl transfer experiments reveal that 1 and 2 can act as demethylation reagent.

Abstract:With the aim of studying the electronic and structural properties of metalloporphyrins, we first prepared the 4-acetoxy-3-methoxy benzaldehyde ( 1 ) then by reaction this aldehyde with pyrrole the meso -arylporphyrin, namely the meso -tetrakis(4-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl)porphyrin (H 2 TAMPP) ( 2 ) was synthesized. We have also prepared a nickel(II) meso -tetra(aryl)porphyrin with the formula [Ni(TAMPP)] ( 3 ). Both two porphyrinic compounds 2 – 3 have been characterized by UV/Vis, fluorescence, 1 H and 13 C NMR and IR spectroscopies as well as by MALDI and ESI-HRMS mass spectrometry. Density functional Theory (DFT) calculations at the DFT/B3LYP-D3/6–311 G (d, p) level of theory have been carried out to investigate the HOMO–LUMO orbitals of 2 – 3 and several global reactive parameters of these two compounds such as the chemical potential, the global hardness, the Mulliken electronegativity, the global softness ( S ) and the global electrophilicity index. The stability and charge delocalization of 2 – 3 were studied by natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. On the other hand, our two porphyrinic species 2 – 3 were theoretically studied for the adsorption of NO 2 and H 2 S gases using the B3LYP/6-31G (d) bases method. Furthermore, H 2 TAMPP ( 2 ) and its corresponding Ni(II) complex ( 3 ) were tested as catalysts of the degradation of the methylene blue (MB) and the methyl orange (MO) dyes using an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide.

Towards meso-meso-linked porphyrin arrays and meso-aryl expanded porphyrins

Abstract:meso-meso-Linked porphyrin arrays and meso-aryl-substituted expanded porphyrins have continuously fueled my imagination for many years. In this account, my expertise in chemical research is retrospectively summarized with a particular focus on how these two novel categories of porphyrinoids were found by our group. As part of our photosynthetic model studies in collaboration with Prof. N. Mataga, the energy-gap dependence of intramolecular charge separation was examined by exploring the photoexcited dynamics of 1,4-phenylene-bridged hybrid porphyrin dimers. This study required electron-deficient porphyrins in the dimers that could serve as an electron-accepting unit towards an octaalkyl-substituted Zn(II) porphyrin donor. To this end, we employed meso-nitrated porphyrins and meso-pentafluorophenyl porphyrins. Efforts to prepare these electron-deficient porphyrins allowed us to serendipitously find both a meso-meso-linked porphyrin dimer and a series of meso-pentafluorophenyl-substituted expanded porphyrins. The meso-meso-linked Zn(II) porphyrin dimer was found as a byproduct in the nitration of 5,10-diaryl Zn(II) porphyrin with AgNO2 but became a major product in the reaction with AgPF6. This finding opened up a new path to directly linked porphyrin oligomers. The series of meso-pentafluorophenyl-substituted expanded porphyrins were prepared via BF3·OEt2-catalyzed condensation of pyrrole and pentafluorobenzaldehyde when the reaction was run at tenfold-higher substrate concentrations, as compared to the optimal conditions for the synthesis of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin. These expanded porphyrins have been shown to have attractive attributes such as flexible structures, versatile electronic states, multi-metal coordination, anion sensing, and large nonlinear optical properties. While these studies were mostly curiosity-driven, some of our work covers rather more general interests: how linearly connected molecules can be rationally synthesized and isolated in a pure and discrete form, how large π-conjugation can be realized to allow for very low energy electronic transitions, and how easily Möbius aromatic and antiaromatic molecules can be prepared.

Abstract:The synthesis of a series of four porphyrin derivatives based on a meso-tetrafluorenylporphyrin core functionalized with one to four trans-chlorobis(dppe)ruthenium alkynyl units (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) at the periphery, together with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy studies, are reported. In these multipolar assemblies, the organoruthenium endgroups are potential electron-donors and the central porphyrin core is a potential electron-acceptor. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses have been assessed by Z-scan, revealing that these extended π-networks incorporating polarizable organometallic units behave as nonlinear absorbers in the near-IR range. The role of the peripheral transition metal centers on the third-order NLO properties is discussed.

Abstract:The presented studies aimed to evaluate the peripheral coordinating properties of a novel porphyrinoid family representative preceded by its synthesis for potential sensing purposes. Two synthetic pathways were employed to a obtain maleonitrile derivative, further used as a starting material in the cyclotetramerization reaction. In the first one, DAMN was used in sequential double-reductive alkylation with 2-thiophene-carboxyaldehyde and sodium borohydride. In the second, DAMN was used in a one-pot reaction with 2-thiophene-carboxyaldehyde in the presence of a 5-ethyl-2-methylpyridine borane complex in methanol and acetic acid. Following the Linstead approach, the cyclization reaction led to a novel symmetrical magnesium(II) octaaminoporphyrazine with methyl(2-thiophenylmethylene) substituents. The macrocycle's electrochemical properties were assessed by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetries revealing one reduction and two oxidation peak potentials. The additional spectroelectrochemical measurements showed formation of a cationic form of the macrocycle at an applied potential of 0.6 V. The coordinating properties due to the palladium ion of novel porphyrazines were measured with the use of titration combined with UV-vis spectrometry. The titration of Pd2+ revealed the good sensing activity of porphyrazine in the range of 0.1 to 5 palladium molar equivalents. In addition, Pd2+ ions coordination was also assessed by electrochemical studies, indicating the peak potential shift of 0.1 V in the presence of metal cations. DFT calculations showed the good agreement between theoretical and experimental data in the UV-vis and 1H NMR studies.

Abstract:Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, Ahead of Print. 2-Nitro-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin–nickel(II), –copper(II), and –cobalt(II) complexes reacted with carbanions of halomethyl aryl sulphones and para-chlorophenoxyacetonitrile according to the vicarious nucleophilic substitution scheme. This leads to the substitution of hydrogen products, in the position ortho- to the NO2 group, thus giving β,β-disubstituted derivatives on the same pyrrole ring. The yields were satisfactory, up to 95%. These types of products, being practically unavailable by alternative methods, are attractive starting materials for the synthesis of more complex porphyrinoid moieties.

Abstract:Porphyrin is an organic macrocycle compound, with a chemical formular (C20H14N4) it act as important components in various technological application like solar cell, due to their flexibility and low production cost. In this work, DFT and TD-DFT were used to investigate the molecular geometry, HOMO-LUMO energy gap, global chemical indices, thermodynamic properties, non-linear optical properties, IR frequencies and IR intensities, open circuit voltage and UV-Vis spectrum of parent and substituted porphyrin molecules were calculated and noted. All the computations were performed by using Gaussian 03 package. Our result for the bond lengths indicates that the strongest bond was found in chloroporphyrin molecule with value of 1.0771(Å) and the highest bond angles was found to be . The calculated value of HOMO-LUMO energy gap shows that porphyrin will be more stable by the substitution of fluoride atom with HOMO-LUMO energy gap of 5.5865eV. The value of energy gap for parent porphyrin molecule (2.8885) eV was found to be very closer to the reported value of (2.920) eV. It was found that the zero point vibrational energy reduces, while the entropy and specific heat capacity of the molecules rises, due to the effect of the substitutions. The non-linear optical properties calculations shows that, the first-order hyperpolarizability values turn out to be ten times than that of the prototype urea ( esu) molecule, which is commonly used for the comparison of NLO properties with other materials. The computed frequencies and intensities result shows that fluoroporphyrin has slightly higher peak values of frequencies with corresponding intensities than the rest of the substituted porphyrin molecules. The open circuit voltage ranges from 2.0206-4.1568eV in the case of high LUMO and 0.9465-3.0828eV in the case of low LUMO, this value can be applied to organic solar cell. The UV-VIS spectrum, shows that due to the solvent effect there was an increase in the excitation energy and then slight increase in oscillator strength. Our finding shows that the hybrid halogenated compound may be utilized as an application in sensor and solar cells.
Nickel-macrocycle interaction in nickel(II) porphyrins and porphyrazines bearing alkylthio β-substituents: A combined DFT and XPS study

Abstract:An electronic structure analysis of two nickel(II) tetrapyrrole complexes bearing β-alkylthio substituents, NiOMTP and NiOETPz, has been carried out through a combination of high-resolution XPS experiments and DFT calculations. The Ni 2p XPS spectra show a 0.5 eV shift to higher energy of the Ni 2p[Formula: see text] and Ni 2p[Formula: see text] binding energies on going from the porphyrin to the porphyrazine complex. This shift, which is well-reproduced by relativistic spin-orbit ZORA calculations, is indicative of a depletion of electron density on the central metal. Such a depletion of electron density is related to the macrocycle-induced changes in the metal-ligand interactions. In the porphyrazine complex both the ligand to metal [Formula: see text] donation and the metal to ligand [Formula: see text]-back donation increase. The latter increases slightly more than the former, however, leading to a decrease of electron density on the central metal.

Abstract:The synthesis, structural characterization, and optical properties of new free-base and metalated dimethylamine-based porphyrin (1, 1a) and chlorin (2, 2a) derivatives are presented. The synthetic approach is based on the peripheral substitution of the para -fluor atoms of the commercially available 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)- 21H,23H -porphyrin (H 2 TPPF 20 ) by dimethylamine (H 2 Por 1), following the preparation of the analogous chlorin dye (H 2 Chl 2) using N -methylglycine and p -formaldehyde. Both compounds were then metalated with zinc acetate to perform the corresponding ZnPor 1a and ZnChl 2a dyes. Several photophysical parameters were determined, including absorption and emission features at 298 K (e.g., molar absorptivity coefficients, λ absorption maxima of Soret and/or Q bands, λ emission maxima, and ratio of long- to short-wavelength emission intensity), fluorescence quantum yield (Ф F ), stability (under dark conditions), and photostability (under white light exposure at irradiance of 50 mW.cm −2 ). The photophysical results were determined and compared for the type of meso -substituted scaffold selected – A 4 -type – of free-base (1, 2) and zinc(II) complex (1a, 2a). The four compounds exhibit high dark stability in DMF (absorption reduction intensity < 3 %). The Pors 1 and 1a have also high photostability (absorption reduction intensity < 1.5 %), but H 2 Chl 2 and ZnChl 2a present a considerable absorption reduction, 14.3 % and 22.3 %, respectively. The Ф F of the ZnPor 1a (Ф F = 0.02) and H 2 Por 1 (Ф F = 0.02) are lower than those of ZnChl 2a (Ф F = 0.06) and H 2 Chl 2 (Ф F = 0.09). The developed compounds present potential applications in nonlinear optics, biomarkers, and/or solar cells.

Abstract:Aromatic and antiaromatic ring currents can reveal global electronic delocalization around the circumference of pi-conjugated macrocycles, although these phenomena are poorly understood in large rings. Here we present the template-directed synthesis of a fully pi-conjugated cyclic porphyrin 12-mer consisting of six b,meso,b-edge-fused porphyrin dimers connected by six butadiyne bridges. The lowest energy pi-pi* absorption band of this partially fused nanoring is shifted far into the NIR, confirming the strong pi-conjugation around the circumference of the macrocycle. Investigation of the oxidized and reduced nanoring-template complex by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy demonstrates the presence of coherent global (anti)aromatic ring currents, consistent with DFT calculations. The stronger -conjugation enables global charge delocalization even at low levels of oxidation or reduction. These findings open new avenues for the engineering of cyclic molecular wires.

Abstract:Conjugated porphyrin dyads have valuable electron-optical properties that make them useful for a variety of applications. Two dyads of palladium(II) β-octaethylporphyrin linked with butenyne bridge to nickel(II) meso -diphenylporphyrin and methyl pyropheophorbide-a, were synthesized using the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. Both the dyads exhibited optical properties considerably different from the corresponding components, indicating strong electronic interaction between the units in the dyads both in the ground and excited states, providing fast energy flow between chromophores. The DFT calculations revealed the structural features of the dyads in interconnection with their electronic properties. The conjugation energy gain forced the decrease of the dihedral angle between porphyrin plane and linking carbon-carbon double bond, though at expense of distortion of the diphenylporphyrin ring. The electron transitions upon excitation comprise molecular orbitals centered on both chromophores and their interaction led to emerging new bathochromically shifted Soret band component at 460 nm. The palladium porphyrinate-chlorin dyad exhibits luminescent properties in the red visible range at room temperature, as well as phosphorescence at near-infrared (NIR) at 77 K. In contrast, the palladium-nickel porphyrinate dyad does not emit light, but it absorbs light more effeciently across the entire visible spectrum. Both the dyads feature broad and strong absorption representing panchromatic like dyes. These dyads could be useful as potential photosensitizers for solar light conversion devices.

Abstract:Advances in surface-assisted synthesis routes now allow for precise control in the preparation and modification of low-dimensional structures. The choice of molecular precursors plays a fundamental role in these processes since the structural details and properties of the resulting nanostructures directly depend on the molecular block used. From this perspective, units based on porphyrins have proven to be promising candidates for the construction of nanosystems with nontrivial geometry. In particular, efforts have been made to synthesize different arrangements of π-conjugated porphyrins. With this motivation, we use computational simulations to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of nanoribbons constructed from the concatenation of π-extended porphyrins hosting transition metal atoms. We show that the binding energy of these systems and the specific way the electrons populate the d-shells are strongly influenced by the type of the transition metal. Furthermore, it was observed that most systems with chelated metals (except Ni and Zn) feature magnetic properties. The systems considered in this work have analogs in finite structures recently synthesized in the laboratory so the nanomaterials proposed here have a high potential to be produced in the near future.

Abstract:Studies of canine and frog myocardium disclose a consistent inverse relation between interval-dependent contractile alterations and the duration of phase 2 of the concomitant action potentials (AP). This is true despite the differing temporal patterns of contractile change in the two species. A relation of both the inotropic state and AP configuration to K+ flux is suggested.
